English Writing Skills- Descriptive Writing for Class 9 English Language and Literature 

Descriptive Writing for Class 9 is a scoring topic of writing skills which is in the syllabus of class 9 English Language and Literature. Students can score full marks with ease because the format is very simple. You need to know all important details of writing a factual description of a person or object. So, read further to get a detailed understanding of the topic, Samples and Examples of Descriptive writing.

What is Descriptive writing?

Types of descriptive writing, descriptive writing format, tips to score full marks in descriptive paragraphs, descriptive writing topics, samples of descriptive paragraph writing, faqs on descriptive paragraph writing.

Descriptive paragraph writing as the name suggests, involves describing something. It is an easy composition writing exercise in the writing section in which we have to give a description or elaborate details of a person or object or event or place. One can employ imagery, details of appearance, other innate qualities, etc. to make the paragraph interesting. Students will be required to describe a person or event or situation based on visual or verbal cues given in the question. 

We can classify descriptive writing as follows – 

  • Description of a person
  • Description of a place or event
  • Description of an object

Weightage and marking scheme for class 9 English (Language and Literature)

Students must keep the following points in mind-

A perfect descriptive paragraph will be awarded 5 marks. 

The student will be given two questions out of which the student has to attempt one. 

The student will be judged on the basis of content, accuracy, organisation and grammar. 

The word limit of a descriptive paragraph is 100-120 words.

Here is the detailed format of a descriptive paragraph-

Introduction (Introduce your topic in an interesting way so that the reader will become interested in reading the rest of your paragraph.)

Body (Dwell on the topic more by giving elaborate details.)

Conclusion (give an overall statement which ends your writing piece perfectly. Do not b abrupt in the ending.)

Descriptive writing requires beautiful vocabulary and the author’s ability to create an image of the person, place, object or event described in the reader’s mind. You can use the given tips when describing – 

  • First impression
  • Appearance (height, build, facial features, hair)
  • Personality (kind, charming) Keep it rather positive.
  • Mannerisms (greets people enthusiastically, loves to help others)
  • Hobbies (gardening, cooking, singing, painting)
  • Career (line of work, attitude towards their job i.e. whether they love their job)
  • Where and when the writer was introduced to the person
  • Name of event
  • Nature and aim of event
  • Place of event
  • Time and duration of event
  • Writer’s and other people’s experience
  • Aftermath (what happened after the event ended)
  • People involved

A SITUATION

  • Nature of situation
  • Writer’s and other’s people’s experiences
  • Outcome of situation (aftermath)
  • Time, duration and place of situation

The following are some useful tips for descriptive writing:

  • Vocabulary (Wide vocabulary can impress the reader.)
  • Imagery (The descriptive paragraph should paint vivid images of the person, event or situation so described.)
  • Literary devices (Use of literary devices like simile, alliteration, imagery can make the writing sound more creative and beautiful.)
  • Do not exceed the word limit.
  • Make sure to avoid grammatical errors and maintain accuracy.

Here is a list of important topics for descriptive paragraph writing . Students must practise these questions for exams-

  • Your parents gifted you a potted plant on your birthday. Describe it.
  • You visited the annual crafts fair organised in your city. Describe the event.
  • Describe your school principal. You may take help of the cues – 

Disciplinarian – strict – kind hearted – hard working – guides students in matters of career decisions – organises cultural events – promotes participation in debates and quizzes

  • You are grateful to God for caring mother that you have. Describe your mother and her affection towards you.
  • You bought a bag for your brother as a gift on Raksha Bandhan. Describe it.
  • You got a book as a birthday gift. Describe it and how you felt after reading it.
  • Describe your loving grandparents and how they care fpr you.
  • Describe your best friend.
  • The school took all students to a visit to the butterfly park in your city. Describe the place and what all you saw there.
  • Your school organised a grand celebration on the occasion of Teacher’s day. Describe it.

Now let’s look at some samples to understand this topic better.

Q1. Describe your mother in 100-120 words.

Ans. My mother’s name is Sohini Chugh. She is 46 years old. She is a plump, fair-complexioned woman with hazel eyes and blonde hair colour. I inherited my eye colour from her. Her height is 160 cm and weight is 84 kgs. She is kind, hard-working, strict and possesses a great sense of humour. She enjoys cooking, teaching and reading. Her favourite genres are comedy and detective novels. She is a teacher who teaches the subject mathematics to classes 6th to 8th at Sunshine High School, where I study as well. The students find her to be a strict teacher. My mother likes helping her students and guiding them, but does not tolerate disorderliness and bad mannerisms. 

Q2. You attended the Annual Function held at your sister’s school. Describe the event in 100-120 words.

Ans. On 16th December, I attended the Annual Function held at my sister’s school. The Annual Function was biblical-themed. Classes 6th to 11th were involved in the event. Ans. On September 14th, I had my Physics exam, the subject the majority of us are scared of. Nevertheless, my classmates and I sat down to give our best. Cheating is performed expertly by my classmates. However, this time the invigilator was a harsh and sharp teacher. Everyone knew not to cheat, but of course two students were willing to take the risk. They were caught. Their papers were seized and were ordered to get up and move to the Principal’s room for further action. Upon hearing this, one of them got a panic attack. The invigilator called another invigilator, then the class teacher. Soon, it was chaos. Everyone was distracted by the situation.

Ans. My best friend’s name is Meena Goel. She is the same age as me. She has been studying in the same school, class and section as me for five years. We are in 9th class now. 1. Technology has made us overly dependent on its existence

For the motion: Billy Lox, a very famous American bassist said, “Technology should improve your life, not become your life.” That’s one thing that every one of us should learn and adopt. We need technology just to improve and help us do our work, which otherwise would be time consuming, in a much easier and faster way. That is it. We do not have to become slaves of technology. Gadgets, equipments, machines etc., are just a part of life not a way of life.

We need to loosen our grip on technology and tighten it on human interaction. Albert Einstein once said, “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots.” We definitely do not want our generation and the coming generations to be skill-less nitwits.

Gone are the days when kids would want to play outside in the parks or gardens. They now want to have a smart phone or a laptop or a television in front of them where they either play games, watch shows etc. We know that these actions have serious repercussions.

Depression, insomnia, hyperactivity disorder are some major disorders that today’s kids are facing are directly linked to gadgets. A very important question here is not what technology has done and is doing ‘for’ us but what technology has done and is doing ‘to’ us. One to one communication is losing its essence.

While sitting together for dinner in a restaurant, in a party, in a family gathering or any social event, people are seen glued to their smart phone. Reading stories to children, listening to live music, having a soulful conversation with a family member or friend seems forgotten tales.

Our increasing dependence on technology for getting us through all our daily chores, our day to day obligatory communication, our days and our nights, is removing the power of choice. We take what technology has to offer without weighing our options because it’s easy and quick that way. I conclude with just one sentence. Technology is a useful servant but a very, very dangerous master.

Against the motion:

American Physicist Freeman Dyson says, “Technology is a gift of God. After the gift of life it is perhaps the greatest of God’s gifts. It is the mother of civilizations of arts and of sciences.” Technology has given us freedom to express ourselves in an open forum. It has given us the opportunity to see the things, we only dreamt of. It is present in every aspect of our lives, enriching us, and our work’s output.

Agreed that too much dependency on technology is not called for. But to come to think of it, right from morning till the end of our day, we have to use technology for something or the other. Be it making a smoother for breakfast, or using an elevator to get to the 25th floor, or to present an impressionable powerpoint presentation, technology is omnipresent.

The field of health and medication would still be reeling under manual scans whose authentication was always doubtful. Enter hi-tech technology, the scene changes. Accurate diagnosis, surgical procedures, improved patient care etc., are the result of development of some brilliant medical innovations like MRI machines, artificial organs, and robotic prosthetic limbs.

Technology is best when it brings people together. So many of us have reconnected with friends and acquaintances whom we had not seen or heard from, in years. Social media is a very precious gift from technology to us. Our world has come closer. Inter personal communication is better, faster and most of all possible.

Sending money, gifts, consignments anywhere in the world was a nearly impossible dream. Even if it was possible, it was either very timeconsuming or expensive. But not anymore. We can do all these things with a snap of our fingers. No boundaries separate nations. We all are on one global platform.

Technology has given the word “possibility” new and wider dimension. We can hope and imagine better and easier ways of living our lives. We are changing the world with technology. Technology will never replace great thinkers but technology in the hands of great thinkers is transformational. Technology is used everyday in every field in everything we do.

2. Why Democracy Works

For the motion: As much as Democracy is understood, it is a government of the people, by the people and for the people. The ability of the people to have a voice in the running of the State, in the economy, health, education, infrastructural development, etc. creates a balanced environment for governance to thrive; this can only be achieved in a democratic governance.

Democratic states have the right to vote for their government by deciding the policy of their nation and what their nation should be like. They have more freedom of speech and expression than in autocracies. In particular they are free to criticize their own government.

The government represents the views of the people who elect them and the same people can throw them out if the government does things that the people do not approve of. Unlike other forms of government democracy is about the common man, rather than the elite that are often disconnected from ground realities.

Democracy is more about having checks and balances and having transparency of decision-making, than about elections and the populace throwing governments out of power. In a democracy the parliament, the media and sometimes the judiciary all keep an eye on what is being done with people’s money.

They are therefore able to keep a check on things that are detrimental to the country, are immoral, or even illegal. Even where such actions are not visible on the surface there are separate institutions that have the power to investigate and watch any ‘secret’ deals or actions that are going on, away from public view.

If democracy is put at its appropriate performance, then, all facet of human rights will be respected. The citizens would have the rights to exercise freedom of speech concerning the well-being of the populace in the areas of economy, education, health, infrastructural development, etc. These are the reasons I believe why democracy works in any country.

Against the motion: It is an accepted fact that liberal democracy is the worst possible political system—except for all the others.

We are not perfect—and neither are our governments, since they are made of humans too. It is most advisable to be skeptical, even of democracy itself. One of the foundations of democracy is the assumption that all votes are equal. Well, that’s the theory—but in fact it is rarely so. It assumes that all opinions are worth the same, which is quite a big leap of faith, since we are putting the same value on the opinions of the educated and the ignorant, and the law-abiding citizens and crooks.

A common criticism of democracy is that in the end it devolves into a popularity contest. Polls don’t decide who is right—that’s simply decided by whoever is most willing to say what people like to hear.

In a democracy, tribal mentality is very dangerous, because it will make you vote “for your team” instead of voting according to issues. Unfair legislation can be passed if there are vocal groups in the majority (by oppressing the minority) or in the minorities (by entitling them to privileges that the majority can’t enjoy).

Corruption is not a specific flaw of democracy, and in fact it can be argued that democracy tends to be less prone to corruption than other systems, since it leaves the possibility of ejecting someone from office. But that possibility also favors a very specific kind of corruption: machine politics, a political organisation in which the bosses dole out rewards in exchange for the vote.

It can be as simple as paying money to someone in exchange for their vote, or giving someone a job in the office of the politician who commands the machine. A softer form of machine politics (or “clientelism”) involves the earmarking of federal funds for certain districts or states, so that Representatives and Senators vote for the programs those funds are allocated to.

Another side-effect of democracy is that if the State starts providing a service or a pay to someone, they begin to feel entitled to it. Most people will never vote for the party of someone who “took their jobs”, no matter how long ago this might have happened.

These are the reasons why I feel that democracy does not work.

Suggested Outlines of Argumentative Essay 1. Euthanasia (Mercy killing) should be legalized For the motion :

  • Right to choose when to die
  • Euthanasia should be allowed if the patient is in any case as good as dead.
  • Ends the patients suffering
  • Gives the patient the right to have a dignified end
  • Just another name for assisted suicide
  • Can be taken advantage off by greedy heirs and nominees
  • Goes against the fundamental right to live
  • Goes against the Hippocratic oath taken by doctors

2. Animal testing should be allowed For the motion :

  • Animals play a vital role in research.
  • No one uses them uncaringly. They are sedated/drugged before being used for testing.
  • Many breakthrough drugs would not have been possible if animal testing was not allowed.

1. Animals feel pain and fear just as we do.

2. No animal should ever face being genetically engineered to develop cancer medicines, as mice are; being intentionally paralyzed from brain damage, as are monkeys. Approximately 90% of medicines that pass tests on animals fail on people.

3. Death Penalty should be abolished For the motion:

  • It is not ethical (We cannot play God – not able to give back life, so no right to take life).
  • Gives wrong message to the public (that violence can be dealt with violence)
  • It is hypocritical- The nation that denounces the practice of murder resorts to the same act cannot be revoked.
  • Statistics prove no decrease in death rate even in countries where it is legalized, so why go for an obsolete way of punishment?
  • Does not give opportunity for the criminal to realize the magnitude of his crime.
  • Does not achieve the goal of punishment to reform character.
  • Acts as a deterrent to crimes by instilling fear of death.
  • It is the ultimate warning to terrorists, rapists and professional killers.
  • More secure society.
  • Can be revoked if proved innocent of crime.

4. There should be no school uniforms For the motion :

  • Uniforms ultimately cost more.
  • Uniforms do not teach children how to deal with people who are different from them.
  • Cliques will still form.
  • It is impossible to prevent all outside intrusion.
  • Children will still ask for designer labels for outside of school clothing. (Uniforms will not make this issue go away.)
  • Uniforms teach children that in order to get along with everyone they must conform to the same standards.
  • Uniforms will stop other students being judged on how they look.
  • Uniforms will save families’ money.
  • Uniforms will make it harder for cliques to form.
  • Uniforms will make it easier to identify those who are not from the school and therefore increase security/safety.

5. Examinations are necessary For the motion:

  • Tourists bring the culture of their country.
  • Youngsters are enamoured by foreign ways of life, attitude and behaviour and try to follow alien life style.
  • Traditional values forgotten may despise their own language, customs and beliefs.
  • Exposure to cosmopolitan culture leads too confusion in mind.
  • Modern dresses adopted, even if they do not suit body structure, weather/ climate, sensibilities and ethos.
  • Tourism is here to stay. Globalisation makes it inevitable.
  • Local traditions, art, architecture get a boost.
  • Feel proud of heritage that is appreciated by visitors.
  • Artistes are encouraged to showcase their talents.
  • Handicrafts get a boost and more and more art forms appear – leads to creative sensibilities.
  • Local cuisine gets a fillip.
  • Old buildings and monuments get a new life, being spruced up to represent the face of the country.
  • Revival of interest in traditional attire-embroidery, block printing, tye and dye, batik prints, etc.

8. Talent is more important for success than training For the motion:

  • Inborn ability cannot be matched.
  • Gives a head start to overshadow others.
  • No amount of training can originate innate capabilities
  • Only talent will result in genuine interest and passion, determination to pull along.
  • Talent has to be recognised and developed by self and experts.
  • For want of training, many have not reached the peak of success.
  • Only by constant practice, inborn skills can be polished to outshine others.
  • All renowned artists go for higher level of training and practice regularly. ‘Genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration”.

Question 1. You love your father very much, for he is an ideal father. Describe him in your own words in 100-150 words. Answer: Mr Raj Gupta is my father. He is a very polite and caring person. He loves me very much. Although he is a very busy person, yet he pays full attention to me and helps my mother in household chores. He is an ideal father to me. Once I fell seriously ill. It took four days and five nights to recover. All those days he took leave from his office and did not sleep the whole night while he sat beside me.

She is an Indian actor. She has been praised by critics for her dancing skills. When she dances, her movements sway the air. I have watched alf her movies in which she gave superb dancing performances. She speaks very well through her dance postures. It seems that she has dance in her DNA. She dances collectively but if we go into deep we will discover that every part of her body is dancing individually. In 2008, she was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.

Question 4. Last summer vacation you went to your friend’s village. His grandmother looked after you as if you were her grandchild. Describe her in 100-150 words. Answer: In every summer vacation, I visit some hill station, but last time I visited my friend’s grandmother’s village on her repeated invitations. She gave me a warm welcome. First of all, we took a bath in the river and rested under the dense trees. She cared a lot, especially for me as I was her guest. Her sweet nature and soft speaking really impressed me.

Question 6. One day you were commuting in a DTC bus. Unfortunately, your wallet was left at home. The conductor gave you the ticket for free. You are moved by his gesture. Describe him in 100-150 words. Answer: One day I was commuting on a DTC bus. Unfortunately, my wallet was left at home. I had no money to buy the ticket and it was useless to plead before the conductor. Every moment was adding to my anxiety, lest I should be caught by the ticket checker and further consequences. The conductor asked me to take the ticket but after knowing the truth he offered me the ticket. I looked at him as if I was asking the reason and he just smiled.

Answer: Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman born on 7 November 1888, in the former Madras Province of India (presently Tamil Nadu) was an Indian physician who carried out ground-breaking work in the field of light scattering. He discovered that when light traverses a transparent material. Some of the deflected light changes wavelength. This phenomena of “Raman effect” earned him the 1930 Nobel Prize for Physics.

Raman was honoured with a large number of honorary doctorates and memberships of scientific societies. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society early in his career in 1924 and knighted in 1929. He later resigned from the fellowship in 1968 for reasons unrecorded, the only Indian FRS ever to do so.

In 1954, India honoured him with its highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna and celebrates National Science Day on 28 February of every’ year to commemorate the discovery of the Raman effect in 1928. Raman breathed his last on 21 November 1970.

Answer: Kiran Mazumdar Shaw is an Indian billionare entrepreneur and also the chairperson and managing director of Biocon United (a Biotechnology company) and is also the chairperson of IIM Bengaluru. Born to Gujarati parents in Bengaluru. She did her schooling from Bishop’s Cotton Girls’ High School and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in zoology from Bangalore University. She hoped to go to a medical school but did not obtain a scholarship.

Her father, Rasendra Mazumdar was the head brewmaster at United Breweries. He suggested her to pursue a course in fermentation science to be trained as a brewmaster which was a very non-traditional course for a woman. Mazumdar went to the Federation University in Australia to study Malting and Brewing in 1974, the only woman enrolled in the brewing course and earned the Master’s degree in brewery in 1975.

She joined the Biocon Company as a trainee manager for a brief period at Cork Ireland and then returned to India to start her own business. And the rest is history. She has won several national and international awards and honours today. She has been listed by Forbes as one of the most. powerful women in the world at 77th and 71st positions in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

While describing a place there are some important steps :

  • Break the description into 2-3 paragraphs.

Question 2. You recently visited the city of Jaipur, famous for its Hawa Mahal, the palace and forts. Shopping in Jaipur is also exciting as there are many things to buy. Write a description of the place in 100-150 words. Answer: Jaipur, also referred to as the Pink City. The Hawa Mahal here is made of Pink stone. It is the capital of Rajasthan. It is a colourful city with monuments, good food and lots of shopping. By road from Delhi it is about 4 hours drive. By air just about 45 minutes from Delhi. It is a hot place and the best time to visit is December to February. The rest of the months it will be hot. The palaces constructed by erstwhile kings are marvels of architecture. If one has to see all the monuments it will take no less than 3 days.

Apart from forts, shopping in Jaipur is exciting. Things are reasonably priced, marble carvings and objects made out of stone are famous in Jaipur. The typical Rajasthani cuisine is elaborate and is served with lot of butter and ghee. Some of the dishes are dal, bhatti churma, kachori, etc. The art of tie and dye is very famous in Rajasthan. Fabric, dress material and sarees on which this technique is used are liked by women.

Question 3. Srinagar with its Dal lake, the snow clad mountain peaks and the Shalimar garden is nothing but a paradise on the earth. You visited this beautiful city sometime back. Write an account of the place in 100-150 words. Answer: Kashmir is the paradise on the earth. It is a beautiful place, so scenic with snow clad mountains, beautiful lakes, flowers and fruits all around. Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir, is connected by air with all major metros of India. There is no train facility at Kashmir. The nearest railway station is Katra or Jammu. There are many hotels where one can stay.

In the Dal lake there are houseboats called as Shikaras in which one can stay. Words cannot describe the beauty of this place. One can see apple trees laden with apples. Other main trees are Deodar, Firs and Pines, Chenar, Maple, Birch and Walnut. One should visit Srinagar at least once during one’s lifetime.

Jetlag, itchy feet, hit the road, time table, on the home stretch, call it a day, book in advance, travel over, travel through, travel light, any port in a storm, stopover, etc. Answer: We decided to go to Thailand last month. I was too excited to think of what it would be like. We booked the tickets and when the time came, packed our things. When we landed at Thailand airport after a journey of about five hours, I had jet legs but soon forgot it seeing the beauty all around. We checked in the hotel and rested for some time. It was a wonderful day and we enjoyed coconut milk. We hired bikes and toured half of the island relishing the local life that was so lively and full of activity.

On our way, we tasted delicacies of the local cuisine. Mostly it was spicy food. We visited tropical jungles and witness the beauty and splendour of nature. We were overwhelmed by the serenity and beauty of the place. Soon the time to go back arrived. It was a sad feeling to think of leaving this extraordinary calmness. It was the best journey of my life.

Question 5. The city of Delhi, capital of India, is a wonderful amalgamation of tradition and modernity. With places like Red Fort and Jama Masjid on one hand, India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan on the other hand, it is a city worth visiting. You happened to go around the city last month. Write a description of the city in 100-150 words. Answer: Delhi, the capital city of India, is a wonderful amalgamation of tradition and modernity. There are many places to visit in this city. It is the most well-connected city in this country. There is a variety of hotels and guest houses where people who visit this city can stay. If one wishes to visit all the places in this city then one has to stay here for at least 3-4 days. There is Red fort, Jama Masjid, Kutub Minar, India Gate and many other places to visit and see. There is shopping to do in Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh and Connaught Place.

One can a feel and see the beautiful blend of the old and the new in this city.

Question 6. Write a descriptive paragraph on the following inputs in 100-150 words. , FACT FILE

  • Nearest airport is at Jabalpur (165 km)
  • Nearest town and railwayhead is Umaria (30 km). The other railway stations are Jabalpur (165 km), Katni (102 km) and Satna (120 km).
  • There are varied government and private options for accommodation in Tala village that adjoins the park.
  • The park is open to visitors from October to June. But the best season for viewing wildlife is November to April.
  • Getting around : Maruti Gypsys are used to explore the park. The reservation of these can be done at the Project Tiger office or the hotels where one is staying. The tour is conducted by a guide and in the park one must adhere to the allocated route.

The Bandhavgarh National Park is set amongst the Vindhya Hills and is in the district of Shadol in Madhya Pradesh. It was declared a national park in 1968 and today covers an area of 437 sq. km. The park derives its name from the most prominent hill fort of the area, which is (mythologically) said to have been given by Lord Rama to his brother Laxman to keep a watch on Lanka (Bandhav = Brother, Garh = Fort). Answer: Bandhavgarh National Park is situated in the state Of Madhya Pradesh. The nearest airport is Jabalpur. It is in the Vindhya Hills, in the district’of Shadol in MP. In the year 1968 it was declared as a National Park. This park has a large biodiversity. The park has a large breeding population of leopards and various species of deer. It is declared as the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in 1993. It covers an area of 694 sq. km.

The best time to visit this place to enjoy the wildlife is November to April. There is a variety of accommodation available including Govt, guest houses and private hotels. Maruti Gypsies are used to go around the park. One can book these in advance either from the Project Tiger Office or from the hotel where one is staying.

Question 7. You recently visited the Children’s Park, a favourite place for all children, in your city. Write a description of the Park in 100-150 words. Answer: Children’s Park is the place all children love to go. The park in our city of Delhi is huge. There are about 4 play areas with different types of playthings. The area for small children has swings, see-saw and slides. Then there is a ground where children can play games like badminton, volleyball etc. There is a football court as well. Facing the India Gate is a Tennis court.

Apart form all these there are green areas for parents to play with their children. Families come here for outdoor activities and enjoy picnics especially during winters. There is a provision for cooking as well. There are many trees. As a result during summers, this park remains cool in the day. A park, which, all children should definitely visit.

Any description of an event should include factual details. While writing about an event the following points should be kept in mind.

  • As the event is being described after its completion, one has to use past tense.
  • All the facts about the event have to be included while writing the description.
  • It is always better not to include personal opinion or comment while describing an event.

Question 3. The International Women’s Day was celebrated in all parts of the world with great gusto. As part of the celebrations, women achievers were given awards by the Rotary Club of your city. Among those honoured included the famous Police Officer Kiran Bedi, Sharmila Tagore and Shabana Azmi. Write a short description of this event in 100-150 words. Answer: March 8th is celebrated every year as International Women’s day. The reason we celebrate this day is to honour women and to recognise their contribution to the. family, society and nation.

Rotary Club of our city organized a celebration to honour some women achievers. Those honoured included Kiran Bedi, the Magsaysay award winner, Sharmila Tagore, the Chairperson of the Censor Board and Shabana Azmi, a woman activist and a great actor.

Ms Bedi exhorted the young girls to repel any untoward advances to them. She further said that the whole state machinery is with them. Ms Tagore asked the girls to study hard, because it is education that will give them confidence. Ms Azmi advised the ladies to come forward and join the mainstream of the society.

All these women pledged to work for the upliftment of women of this country.

Question 4. Your school celebrated Sports Day on 20th February. The famous cricketer Suresh Raina was the Chief Guest for the occasion. Write a description about the event in 100-150 words. Essay writing is not everyone’s cup of tea. Most students find it difficult to begin writing. Essays can be made easier if students start thinking about the topic either through brainstorming or by putting them down on a sheet of paper. Characteristics of a Good Essay

A composition on a particular topic consisting of more than one paragraph is an essay. The characteristics of a good essay are:

1) Unity: The essay should deal with the main subject and all parts of it should be clearly linked with that subject.

2) Coherence: There should be a logical sequence of thought. This requires a logical relationship between ideas, sentences and paragraphs.

3) Relevance: Unimportant information should not be included.

4) Proportion: Give more space to important ideas.

1) Narrative Essays: Telling a Story

While writing a narrative essay, students must consider the topic as if telling a story. Through these essays, they can express themselves in a creative way. These essays are usually written in the first person, so as to engage the readers.

2) Descriptive Essays: Painting a Picture with Words

In a descriptive essay, students have to paint a picture with words. They have to describe something. It can be an object, person, place, experience, emotion, situation or anything else. These essays allow students a great deal of artistic freedom.

3) Expository Essays: Presentation of the Facts

An expository essay is an informative piece of writing that presents a balanced analysis of a topic. To write a good expository essay, students need to investigate the topic, evaluate evidence, express the idea, and set forth an argument clearly and concisely. It can be done by comparison and contrast, definition, example, the analysis of cause and effect, etc.

4) Persuasive Essays: Convince Me

A persuasive essay is one in which a writer tries to convince the reader to accept his/her viewpoint. It presents all sides of the argument but clearly communicates the writer’s personal opinion.

1 . THE BLOND GUITAR

My most valuable possession is an old, slightly warped blond guitar—the first

instrument I taught myself how to play. It’s nothing fancy, just a Madeira folk

guitar, all scuffed and scratched and fingerprinted. At the top is a bramble of

copper-wound strings, each one hooked through the eye of a silver tuning key.

The strings are stretched down a long, slim neck, its frets tarnished, the wood

worn by years of fingers pressing chords and picking notes. The body of the

Madeira is shaped like an enormous yellow pear, one that was slightly damaged in

shipping. The blond wood has been chipped and gouged to gray, particularly

where the pick guard fell off years ago. No, its not a beautiful instrument,

but it still lets me make music, and for that I will always treasure it.

2. THE KITCHEN

The kitchen held our lives together. My mother worked in it all day long, we ate in it almost all meals except the breakfast, I did my homework and first writing

at the kitchen table, and in winter, I often had a bed made up for me on three

kitchen chairs near the stove. On the wall, just over the table, hung a long

horizontal mirror that sloped to a ship’s prow at each end and was lined in

cherry wood. It took up the whole wall, and drew every object in the kitchen to

itself. The walls were a fiercely speckled whitewash, so often re-whitened by

my father in slack seasons that the paint looked as if it had been squeezed and

cracked into the walls. A large electric bulb hung down the center of the

kitchen at the end of a chain that had been hooked into the ceiling; the old

gas ring and key still jutted out of the wall like antlers. In the corner, next

to the toilet, was the sink at which we washed, and the square tube in which my

mother did our clothes. Above it, tacked to the shelf on which were pleasantly

ranged square, blue-bordered white sugar and spice jars, hung calendars from

the National Bank and the Workmen’s Circle; receipts for the payment of

insurance premiums, and household bills on a spindle; two little boxes engraved

with Hindi letters.

INSPIRING TEACHER

There are some inspiring teachers in my life. But the one whom I am going to tell you about is really a great teacher for me. His name is Shyam Sagar. He was my lecturer in Sanskrit Literature, University of Delhi. He was the third person

who has the highest knowledge of Sanskrit linguistic in the world. His

specialty was in calligraphy and philosophy. He doesn’t have a high education

title. In fact, he was a truck driver in Tamil Nadu before he was appointed to

be a guest lecturer in University of Delhi. When we saw him for the first time,

he didn’t look like a lecturer. He was carrying a black plastic bag and wore a

simple outfit. What impressed us at that time was that he was talking as if we

had watched an English movie! He didn’t have many rules in his class but he

knew how to attract us to study more and more. Every time we studied

linguistic, he let us feel and try the words, so we had no doubt in pronouncing

them. He was able to let us understand phrases matching to situations and Tamil culture. His humble heart and persistence made us respect him more. As a result, we always tried our best in his class because we did not want to

disappoint him. I have been admired by his attitude towards his students, and I

try to model him, yet I’m still learning.

4. MY FAVOURITE PLACE

My favorite place which is important to me is my countryside house. I have very bright impressions and memories related to it. That is the place where I have grown up, met my friends and where I have spent almost all my life.

It is a big house with a yard. In summer, there are a lot of flowers which make

the outlook beautiful In the backyard, there is a “place where I love to

spend time, lying in hammock and dreaming under the tree.

Inside the house, there is a kitchen, a big living room, where you can invite guests, friends and chat with them, watch TV and relax. Next to the living room there are rooms, which are always sunlit during daytime, so you wake up with a very good mood in the morning. The house has a very homely atmosphere I will always like this place, because I have many good, pleasant memories and feelings about it.

5. MY HOMETOWN

grew up in Shimla which is located in the state of Himachal Pradesh in the

northern part of India. Large, old oak trees and green lawns, surrounded by

hills covered in pine trees formed my neighborhood. The streets were quiet,

with only the sound of birds singing and some cars passing every once in a

while. During the cold, snowy winters, most people stayed inside, and one could

smell wood burning in fireplaces and see smoke coming out of chimneys. In

summer, one could see people walking dogs or jogging, smell cut-fresh grass,

and see squirrels jumping from tree to tree. My hometown made me feel secure

and comfortable. Now, I usually visit Shimla once a year. Not a lot has changed

except now there are more people, more traffic, and more places to go, such as

shopping malls and restaurants. I feel nostalgic when I think about Shimla.

6. MY LOVING SISTER

has a family, but only few are lucky to have an inspiring, strong and caring

sister like mine. My sister’s name is Radhika Kapoor. My sister is currently staying

with her friend’s family in Patel Nagar as she is pursuing an advanced academic

program. She works her brain off to meet deadlines, produce new ideas, and on

top of that she tries to fit time in her busy schedule every night to call or

text us. For , engineering, she has

sacrificed so much to be the best. Although engineering doesn’t define her,

what she loves about it is that it’s a challenge she has to face. Radhika has

everything that a little sister would have wanted. She’s understanding,

intelligent, funny, and charismatic. Radhika brings solution to every problem.

regardless the situation. My sister is my teacher. She guides me through my

life. Radhika always advises me on what to be avoided and what would bring

benefits to me. Radhika is sincere to everyone and herself. I love my sister

and no one can do anything. to separate us. I hope that someday I can take good

care of her as she has cared for me.

MY GRANDMOTHER

person I will always remember is my grandmother, because she was the most

amazing person I had ever known. My grandmother was a person everyone wanted to

be around, she always put a smile on our faces without even trying. She had the

finniest laugh and was always cracking jokes which was probably the reason why

we were always laughing. My grandma would help anyone no matter hat the situation was even if it meant going

out of her way to help. She was very caring and always had a welcoming home for

us; my cousins and I always liked staying with her on the weekends.

My grandma was like my best friend. I could talk to her about anything, and she

knew exactly how to solve my problems. She also used to make the best idlis and

payasam. I always looked forward to Diwali walking into her house, smelling all

the warm food, waiting for us. I will always cherish all the memories I had

with my grandma. She raised me to be a better person and to look at things in a

positive way. She was a strong, loving, caring, funny woman and had many things

to give to others. An one who met her will cherish forever.

FRIEND-MY CHAMP

 Mohan has been a good friend of mine for some

years now. Our friendship goes all the way hack to when we first met in primary

school. Although we were very young and seemed to not have too much in common,

we somehow found some reasons to bond and create a friendship. It is a

friendship that has become stronger over the time and through our shared life

experiences. He is my exact opposite in terms of physical attributes. He is

taller than me with dark hair and black eyes. He also has better fashion sense

than I have with his standard jean pants and black shirt. Black is his

favorite color, so it tends to show up in most of his clothes. He is also

more sociable than I am. Because of his talent for drawing, he often attracts

people to look at his 3D designs on his laptop. He has a creative mind, so he

has a lot of projects that he works on whenever he has some free time. He is

the friend that I come to when I feel troubled or pressured. It is his voice of

reason that helps me calm down and reminds me to remain composed at all times.

He is my best friend because he cares about me and works on our friendship with

me. I can only hope that we will be friends forever.

9. PLEASURES OF WATCHING A

our country celebrated its Republic Day on 26th January. i could not go to India Gate lawns to watch the parade of

different states. Therefore, I had to sit in front of my TV I was surprised at

the smart uniforms and the enthusiasm of different battalions of ail the three

branches of the forces. They were followed by the young brave children who

seemed to be very happy on the elephants as all of them had received bravery

awards. The tableau of the states was the main attraction as the colorful artists

presented the dances of their states with a message. The people gathered there,

were impressed by the school children who presented a number of items. I also

wanted to join them. Afterward, I realised that on TV I was only able to

In English 240 students will develop the skills to interpret and evaluate various genres of literature for juvenile readers. This particular section will focus on various works of literature at approximately the 5th-12th grade level.

Readings for this course include works such as Night, Brown Girl Dreaming, All American Boys, Esperanza Rising, Anne Frank’s Diary: A Graphic Adaptation, Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, The Hobbit, Little Women, and Lord of the Flies . As an introduction to Women, Gender and Sexuality studies, this course considers the experiences of women and provides an overview of the history of feminist thought and activism, particularly within the United States. Students will also consider the concepts of gender and sexuality more broadly to encompass a diversity of gender identifications and sexualities and will explore the degree to which mainstream feminism has—and has not—accommodated this diversity. The course will focus in particular on the ways in which gender and sexuality intersect with race, class, ethnicity, and disability. Topics and concepts covered will include: movements for women’s and LGBTQ+ rights; gender, sexuality and the body; intersectionality; rape culture; domestic and gender violence; reproductive rights; Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW); and more.

ENGL 283.S01 Introduction to Creative Writing

Students will explore the various forms of creative writing (fiction, nonfiction and poetry) not one at a time in a survey format—as if there were decisive walls of separation between then—but as intensely related genres that share much of their creative DNA. Through close reading and work on personal texts, students will address the decisions that writers in any genre must face on voice, rhetorical position, relationship to audience, etc. Students will produce and revise portfolios of original creative work developed from prompts and research. This course fulfills the same SGR #2 requirements ENGL 201; note that the course will involve creative research projects. Successful completion of ENGL 101 (including by test or dual credit) is a prerequisite.

English 284: Introduction to Criticism

This course introduces students to selected traditions of literary and cultural theory and to some of the key issues that animate discussion among literary scholars today. These include questions about the production of cultural value, about ideology and hegemony, about the patriarchal and colonial bases of Western culture, and about the status of the cultural object, of the cultural critic, and of cultural theory itself.

To address these and other questions, we will survey the history of literary theory and criticism (a history spanning 2500 years) by focusing upon a number of key periods and -isms: Greek and Roman Classicism, The Middle Ages and Renaissance, The Enlightenment, Romanticism, Realism, Formalism, Historicism, Political Criticism (Marxism, Post-Colonialism, Feminism, et al.), and Psychological Criticism. We also will “test” various theories we discuss by examining how well they account for and help us to understand various works of poetry and fiction.

ENGL 363 Science Fiction

This course explores one of the most significant literary genres of the past century in fiction and in film. We will focus in particular on the relationship between science fiction works and technological and social developments, with considerable attention paid to the role of artificial intelligence in the human imagination. Why does science fiction seem to predict the future? What do readers and writers of the genre hope to find in it? Through readings and viewings of original work, as well as selected criticism in the field, we will address these and other questions. Our reading and viewing selections will include such artists as Ursula K. LeGuin, Octavia Butler, Stanley Kubrick and Phillip K. Dick. Students will also have ample opportunity to introduce the rest of the class to their own favorite science fiction works.

ENGL 383.S01 Creative Writing I

Creative Writing I encourages students to strengthen poetry, creative nonfiction, and/or fiction writing skills through sustained focus on creative projects throughout the course (for example, collections of shorter works focused on a particular form/style/theme, longer prose pieces, hybrid works, etc.). Students will engage in small- and large-group writing workshops as well as individual conferences with the instructor throughout the course to develop a portfolio of creative work. The class allows students to explore multiple genres through the processes of writing and revising their own creative texts and through writing workshop, emphasizing the application of craft concepts across genre, but also allows students to choose one genre of emphasis, which they will explore through analysis of self-select texts, which they will use to deepen their understanding of the genre and to contextualize their own creative work.

Students will compile a portfolio of polished work that demonstrates their engagement with course concepts and the writing process.

ENGL 485.S01 Writing Center Tutoring

Since their beginnings in the 1920s and 30s, writing centers have come to serve numerous functions: as hubs for writing across the curriculum initiatives, sites to develop and deliver workshops, and resource centers for faculty as well as students, among other functions. But the primary function of writing centers has necessarily and rightfully remained the tutoring of student writers. This course will immerse you in that function in two parts. During the first four weeks, you will explore writing center praxis—that is, the dialogic interplay of theory and practice related to writing center work. This part of the course will orient you to writing center history, key theoretical tenets and practical aspects of writing center tutoring. Once we have developed and practiced this foundation, you will begin work in the writing center as a tutor, responsible for assisting a wide variety of student clients with numerous writing tasks. Through this work, you will learn to actively engage with student clients in the revision of a text, respond to different student needs and abilities, work with a variety of writing tasks and rhetorical situations and develop a richer sense of writing as a complex and negotiated social process.

ENGL 492.S01 The Vietnam War in Literature and Film

In 1975, the United States officially included its involvement in the Vietnam War, thus marking 2025 as the 50th anniversary of the conclusion (in name only) of one of the most chaotic, confusing, and complex periods in American history. In this course, we will consider how literature and film attempt to chronicle the Vietnam War and, perhaps more important, its aftermath. I have designed this course for those looking to extend their understanding of literature and film to include the ideas of art, experience, commercial products, and cultural documents. Learning how to interpret literature and movies remains the highest priority of the course, including, for movies, the study of such things as genre, mise-en-scene (camera movement, lighting, etc.), editing, sound and so forth.

We will read Dispatches , A Rumor of War , The Things They Carried , A Piece of My Heart , and Bloods , among others. Some of the movies that we will screen are: Apocalypse Now (the original version), Full Metal Jacket , Platoon , Coming Home , Born on the Fourth of July , Dead Presidents , and Hearts and Minds . Because we must do so, we will also look at some of the more fascinatingly outrageous yet culturally significant fantasies about the war, such as The Green Berets and Rambo: First Blood, Part II .

ENGL 492.S02 Classical Mythology

Modern society’s fascination with mythology manifests itself in the continued success of novels, films and television programs about mythological or quasi-mythological characters such as Hercules, the Fisher King, and Gandalf the Grey, all of whom are celebrated for their perseverance or their daring deeds in the face of adversity. This preoccupation with mythological figures necessarily extends back to the cultures which first propagated these myths in early folk tales and poems about such figures as Oðin, King Arthur, Rhiannon, Gilgamesh, and Odysseus, to name just a few. English 492, a reading-intensive course cross-listed with History 492, primarily aims to expose students to the rich tradition of mythological literature written in languages as varied as French, Gaelic, Welsh, Old Icelandic, Greek, and Sumerian; to explore the historical, social, political, religious, and literary contexts in which these works flourished (if indeed they did); and to grapple with the deceptively simple question of what makes these myths continue to resonate with modern audiences. This course aims to teach the fundamentals of effective scientific writing and presentation. The course examines opportunities for covering science, the skills required to produce clear and understandable text about technical subjects, and important ethical and practical constraints that govern the reporting of scientific information. Particular emphasis will be placed on conveying the significance of research, outlining the aims, and discussing the results for scientific papers and grant proposals. Introduction to Graduate Studies is required of all first-year graduate students. The primary purpose of this course is to introduce students to modern and contemporary literary theory and its applications. Students will write short response papers and will engage at least one theoretical approach in their own fifteen- to twenty-page scholarly research project. In addition, this course will further introduce students to the M.A. program in English at South Dakota State University and provide insight into issues related to the profession of English studies.

ENGL 792.ST1 Grant Writing

This online course will familiarize students with the language, rhetorical situation, and components of writing grant proposals. Students will explore various funding sources, learn to read an RFP, and develop an understanding of different professional contexts and the rhetorical and structural elements that suit those distinct contexts. Students will write a sample proposal throughout the course and offer feedback to their peers, who may be writing in different contexts, which will enhance their understanding of the varied applications of course content. Through their work in the course, students will gain confidence in their ability to find, apply for, and receive grant funding to support their communities and organizations.
