Motor transport operators in the Army do what the job title suggests: they operate wheeled vehicles (so, cars and trucks but not tanks or planes) to transport Army cargo and personnel.

It may not be the most high-adrenaline or high-profile job in the armed services, but motor transport operators play a key role in keeping the Army moving and getting things from Point A to Point B both on and off the battlefield.

This important job is categorized as military operational specialty (MOS) 88M.

Duties of MOS 88M

There's a long list of duties for Army motor transport operators. In addition to operating all-wheel vehicles and equipment over all different types of terrain, they manage the loading and unloading of personnel and cargo being transported, whether in a vehicle or via a trailer.

These soldiers are tasked with using defense techniques to protect convoys, and managing and correcting any malfunctions or problems with vehicles. They prep vehicles for movement, such as readying a Jeep being transported via cargo plane or ship.

And Army motor transport operators oversee the safety of not only their vehicles but their cargo and passengers as well. It's up to them to make sure any transport operations go smoothly from start to finish.

Training for Army Motor Transport Operators

Soldiers in this MOS take the requisite ten weeks of Basic Combat Training and seven weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT). These soldiers divide their training between the classroom and real-world simulation, like most MOS training regimens. For this job, soldiers will spend more than 200 training hours driving vehicles in field training environments.

Requirements

To qualify for MOS 88M, you’ll need to score an 85 in the operators and food (OF) aptitude area of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery ( ASVAB ) test. There's no Department of Defense security clearance required for this position, but you must be free of colorblindness and have a valid state driver's license that won't expire before you complete your AIT.

While the Army will provide all the training, you'll need to succeed in this role, having experience in driver education and an interest in driving and vehicle mechanics will serve you well in your training and beyond.

Similar Civilian Occupations

The skills you learn as an Army motor transport operator prepare you for numerous post-military careers, including positions with trucking, moving or bus companies, or with businesses that have their own delivery fleets. You'll be able to consider a future as a tractor-trailer truck, tank truck, and heavy truck or bus driver.

Or at the Group level, doing theater support with all kinds of heavy trucks. Soldiers in the Reserves drive whatever vehicle the assigned unit has since the Reserves have no P1 units themselves. Typical trucks driven are M915s or HETs. Most reserves are assigned to a transportation unit where the most commonly driven truck is the M915A3. An older truck, the M931A2, is also still used. 88Ms do a lot of driver training, coupling and dropping trailers, securing loads, and train constantly on convoy defense. There will also be a lot of common Soldier skills training.

Twins Designate Jay Jackson For Assignment

By Anthony Franco | June 20, 2024 at 4:52pm CDT

The Twins are designating reliever Jay Jackson for assignment, manager Rocco Baldelli told the team’s beat after today’s loss to the Rays (relayed on X by Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune). Darren Wolfson of SKOR North reports ( on X ) that Minnesota will recall southpaw  Kody Funderburk from Triple-A St. Paul to step into the bullpen. Minnesota’s 40-man roster count drops to 39.

It’s the second time this season that Minnesota has taken Jackson off the roster. The Twins designated him for assignment in May and successfully ran him through outright waivers. The righty accepted his assignment to St. Paul and pitched his way back to the big leagues a couple weeks later. Jackson had only made a trio of appearances in Triple-A, working three innings of one-run ball.

He has pitched 20 times for Minnesota at the big league level. Despite decent strikeout and walk numbers, he has had a tough time keeping runs off the board. That continued this afternoon. Jackson allowed three runs on homers by Jose Siri and  Yandy Díaz , stretching a one-run deficit into a 6-2 gap. Minnesota scored four in the bottom of the ninth to tie it but lost in the tenth inning.

The longball has been Jackson’s biggest concern. He’s up to seven homers surrendered across 26 1/3 innings. That’s the biggest reason he has been unable to strand many baserunners. After today’s outing, he carries a 7.52 earned run average. That’s a sharp downturn from the excellent 2.12 ERA he posted in 29 2/3 frames for the Blue Jays a year ago. Jackson’s strikeout and walk numbers are essentially unchanged from his productive stint in Toronto, but his batted ball results have pushed him off the roster twice.

It is likely that Minnesota will place the 36-year-old on waivers again in the next few days. Jackson could decline an outright assignment if he goes unclaimed, though doing so would require forfeiting what remains of this year’s $1.3MM salary and the $200K buyout on next year’s $3MM club option. He could wind up back in St. Paul as a result.

Cubs will sign him in a few days

Out of options, out of gas, out of here. He may do well to chase his last baseball paycheck out of the country again. It’s been a nice run, Jay.

JJ can brag to his grandkids, he was an MLB ball player

' src=

@curly Not only that, but he has enough success that a Major League team saw that he was talented enough to sign him to a contract to play for their team. If we could all be so lucky.

Don’t know about anyone else, but I never get tired of the old “Team X will sign him” snark.

In fact, we should just refer to that knee-slapper as “#51”.

We could work up a whole list; “John Henry sucks” can be “old number 15”, “Alex Cora is a cheater” can be #38″. The always spectacular comeback “Say hi to your mom for me” could be “11”.

This way, when people want to make all the same, old, tired, useless, non-contributory, cliche comments, they could just post “#71”, and we could all up vote the underlying cleverness.

What number is “World Series bound!” that the hilarious jokesters inevitably toss around when an inconsequential player gets signed to a MiLB contract?

Can’t spell “Funderburk” without “fun”.

Maybe they are freeing up s spot on the 40 man roster for Brooks Lee.

Why Project Management Is the Secret Weapon for Small Business Efficiency

Published on June 18, 2024

Kristi Waterworth

By: Kristi Waterworth

  • Project management comes in the form of project managers and project management software.
  • Combined, these two types of assets can ensure that a project is efficient from design to delivery.
  • The right project management software makes it possible for a project manager to keep close tabs on all the moving parts of the project.

Check out our pick for the best cash back credit card of 2024

Throughout my career, I've worn a lot of hats, but one that I am particularly proud of is being a project manager for a copywriting firm. I ran the teams, I assigned the workload, and, sometimes, I ate the pavement when a project slipped sideways. It was a challenge in every sense of the word, but it also was a job that brought considerable value to the small business I worked for, and I believe my work made us more efficient and productive. Here are some of the things I learned in that role.

What does a project manager do at a small business?

Current top project management software options.

Below are some of our current top picks for project management software that combine value for the cost, combined with the features we consider essential for running your business's project management needs.

A project manager is your efficiency secret weapon

Not every business that runs projects has a project manager or project management tools , and you can often tell. Sometimes it's evident in a lack of cohesion of the end product, which your project manager is there to provide, and sometimes it's evident in a lack of on-time deliverables. Small business owners often choose to go it alone, and armed with the right software bundle and well-designed project management tools, they may themselves become the project's manager.

A project manager's job is efficiency and problem solving, through every step of the process of creating some kind of deliverable. It doesn't matter if it's a house, a website, or a software package -- your project manager's goals will be improving efficiency in these areas.

Task design

Your PM knows your team better than anyone, I can promise you that. If they are tasked with choosing how to break projects down into tasks, they're going to do this with the team's strengths and weaknesses in mind so later they don't have to find a way to fix a problem that could have been avoided.

Task assignment

Your team has different strengths, and your PM knows it. That's why they will give the tasks best suited to the person with the right skills. This is an efficiency of its own, since you won't waste time trying to assign work that's obviously best for a particular person on the team.

Deadline compliance

There are always bumps along the road, and that means deadlines are easy to miss and hard to adhere to. A PM's job is to deliver their projects on time. That's why they work behind the scenes to check on progress and ensure that each part of the puzzle is moved to the right next party in a timely manner or reassigned to someone who can deliver the item before the next round of deadlines.

Quality control and product cohesion

Not all PMs are involved in quality control, but they should be at some level at a small business. This is a vital part of the job that gives your project the professional polish that will help you earn more market share over time. By implementing gatekeepers who are tasked with making the project shine according to written standards, your project manager ensures that clients aren't coming back asking about inconsistencies.

Project managers and project management tools

Of course, no project manager can be a success without project management tools. These software packages make it possible for the project manager to see all the moving parts of a project at a glance. This is where they get a lot of their intel about how a project is doing, especially one with several teams or levels of handling involved.

When you have multiple levels in a project, such as a copywriting firm that also has editorial staff and SEO experts on hand, you have to know where all those pieces are. Plus, you need to know where they should be and who has them at any given moment. In a busy environment, that's impossible without excellent project management software.

Project management is the key to turning a project that kind of works into one that has consistent professional shine, as well as one that meets its deadlines. That's just as important as the rest. A perfect project is useless if it's three weeks too late. With good project management, both in the form of human assets and software assets, your small business can be unstoppable.

New York Mets

Subscriber only, new york mets | mets notebook: tomas nido joins cubs, kodai senga moving forward in rehab.

Tomas Nido (l.) will face off against the Mets this weekend.

Nido signed a Major League contract with the Cubs on Wednesday. The Mets designated him for assignment last week and he cleared waivers. Having surpassed five years of service time, he chose to exercise his right to reject a minor league assignment and become a free agent. The Cubs designated catcher Yan Gomes to clear space on the roster.

“It’s good for him,” manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday at Globe Life Field before the Mets played the series finale against the Texas Rangers. “I’m happy for him that he gets to join a big league club and continue his career. He did a lot for this organization and for these pitchers.”

Nido spent 12 years in the Mets organization before a roster crunch forced the team to make a decision. The club acquired catcher Luis Torrens in a trade with the Yankees on May 31 and Francisco Alvarez was activated off the injured list 12 days later. Nido was a well-respected defensive catcher, but he never turned into the hard-hitting catcher the Mets saw in the minor leagues.

A 30-year-old catcher who was born in Puerto Rico and drafted out of a Florida high school in 2012, Nido won a Florida State League batting title at 22, hitting .320 for High-A St. Lucie in 2016. Over eight seasons in the big leagues, he hit .214 with a .564 OPS.

He was consistently lauded for his work behind the plate, but former general manager Billy Eppler left the team in a tough spot when he signed Nido and Omar Narvaez to two-year contracts during the 2022 offseason, with the Mets buying out Nido’s final two years of arbitration eligibility. But Alvarez proved to be more than ready for the big leagues and Narvaez’s defense was dismal.

The Mets designated Narvaez for assignment in a corresponding transaction after acquiring Torrens. He was released June 5.

Right-hander Jorge Lopez also signed with the Cubs (minor league contract) after he was designated for assignment by the Mets on May 30. He’s currently playing with Triple-A Iowa.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Right-hander Dedniel Nuñez has been unavailable for the Mets out of the bullpen the last two nights due to a sinus infection. The rookie came in Wednesday with a swollen face, complaining of poor sleep. The trainers checked him out and put him on antibiotics. The Mets hope he’ll be available by Friday.

Finally, Kodai Senga appears to be making progress.

The Mets are cautiously optimistic after the right-handed ace threw another bullpen Wednesday at Citi Field. He’s tentatively scheduled to face hitters this weekend or early next week, but the Mets aren’t ready to commit to a firm date for live batting practice.

Senga, who has been out since early spring training with capsular strain in his right shoulder and triceps irritation, got up and down twice in his Wednesday throwing session, which has been consistent with the amount of work he has had since his last shutdown in late May.

“He threw his bullpen, and now let’s see how the next couple of days unfold,” Mendoza said. “Hopefully, he’s facing haters the next time he touches the mound.”

IN THEIR GRIMACE ERA

Grimace mania is dominating social media. With the Mets going 7-0 since the McDonald’s mascot threw out the first pitch at Citi Field, the fast food chain decided to get in on the action. The official McDonald’s X account featured Grimace in a Mets hat on Wednesday, with the bio reading “Mets let’s go.”
