Why give importance to waste materials ? What comes to your mind when we use the word 'waste'? It can be a large picture of dirty, used and unhygienic things lying in a corner of the road. Every year, million tons of wastes are produced globally. So why is waste a global issue? This is because it is posing a huge threat to the environment and public health. It is linked to the way society is producing and consuming goods of any kind.

Waste has to be looked upon as a global issue as it concerns proper sanitation. An excellent plan to reuse the waste will give room for provision of potable food, water, shelter, communication and transport. Basic essential to society and also the economy as a whole. In many countries, there are minimal to absolutely no rules for regulating the waste. There are no rigorous enforcement or implementation of the same leading to opting of cheapest available course of action for the removal of the waste.

• Plastics- Plastic is one of the most dangerous items that take hundreds of years to degrade. It is hazardous due to Styrofoam, polystyrene foam in it. Hence, there is a ban on plastic. Replacing them are Biodegradable plastics, which is, plant derived resin like polylactic acid. It uses are in car parts, electrical components and clothing. Plastic bottles could be used to make hanging lamps, brooms or plant stand at home in artistic ways.

• Paper- In the past, recycled paper had become a trend. It is still a demanding market for its organic aspect. Old envelopes are used as trash bags or tiffin wraps. Newspapers can be used as creative gift wrappers, recycled papers are still used to send invitation and other similar purposes. Saving trees by not using paper is today's trend.

• Rubber tires- Rubber recycling or recycling waste tires that is not capable of functioning properly due to irreparable damage or wear are used again from scratch. Because they are non-biodegradable and are high on durability, they take a lot of space of land. They are reused to make new tires, rubber products, fuels derived by tire etc.

Some other types of industrial waste include fabric from clothing factory, aluminum out of which soda cans are made, paint, ash, empty containers and many more. From industrial wastes to wastes at home, everything can be reused with the right mind. For instance- Gift boxes can be reused as light stands, plastic cups or old bottle caps can be used to make candles, ice-cream sticks can be used to decorate a card or make colorful planes and so on. Waste creates pollution of all kinds and that is detrimental to the environment as a whole. If we don't act today, tomorrow will be not be a safe place for our children. Let us create a healthy place to live by getting the best out of the waste.

Greetings to all the teachers and students gathered here. Today, I stand before you to deliver my point of view on the topic of waste management . In this blog, we will delve into the positive effects, statistics, health implications, technology and innovation, and the role of government in managing waste.

Our cities are expanding day by day, and our societies are becoming more consumer-oriented. In between the two positive situations, the volume of waste we are generating is also reaching surprising proportions.

Landfills are overflowing, oceans are becoming dumping grounds for plastic, and last but not least, the air we breathe is getting contaminated by dangerous emissions from the improper disposal of waste. As a result of this unchecked hazardous climate change, endangered wildlife, and threatening ecosystems are increasing, which is surely going to affect living creatures soon.

Now the question arises: what should be done to manage the waste? Though currently we humans deal with a linear model of take, make, dispose of,” is it sufficient with our regular increase in demands as well as a population?

Waste management is not a task only for government or environmental agencies. It requires the active participation of every individual in our communities. Awareness campaigns, educational initiatives, and empowering citizens to reduce, reuse, and recycle can make a big difference in the area of waste management. It is crucial to preserve and protect our environment. It is good to teach children the importance of protecting the environment by including various activities. Reusing is the process of using things multiple times before discarding them. This reduces the impact of production and disposal on the environment, cuts down on waste, and conserves resources. Plastic spoons can serve as a good material to create attractive flower vases. Wooden ice cream sticks can be beautifully arranged to create a frame for pictures or holding the timetable. Even popsicles ice cream sticks can be painted with cartoon characters and adding some elements which can act as a fancy bookmark that can be gifted to your friend or for self use.

One such problem that has caught people’s attention in the current scenario is the ever-increasing waste and our inability to deal with it. With the ever-growing human population and increasing living standard of people, new settlements are seen burgeoning and industries have also been established to meet the growing human needs for survival. Of course, new agricultural methods are adopted with the help of pesticides and fertilizers for meeting the growing consumption needs. So many other things are also practised for a comfy living. In return, waste matter is generated from industrial and domestic activities, which is dumped into our surroundings.

Cities are now struggling with the problems of the high build-up of waste and its impact on our immediate and global environment. As a result, environmental pollution has come to an alarming stage where our environment is experiencing irreparable damage. Solid and liquid wastes as well as gas particles released from the industries; run-off pesticides and fertilizers from the agricultural practices as well as household sewage from urban regions have come to a point beyond disposal.

However, this problem has also allowed citizens to look for solutions by involving their social and private sectors, by involving the latest innovations for disposal of waste and last but not least, involving behavioural changes and raising people’s consciousness.

Today is World Environment Day and our company has always emphasized adopting environment-friendly measures and doing waste management. I would like to share some important thoughts on waste management on this occasion.

Waste disposal or waste management refers to managing the waste from its initiation to its final removal. This includes collation, transportation, processing, recycling and finally disposal of waste along with monitoring, regulation and control. It also covers the lawful and regulatory aspects that relate to waste management, including the instructions and guidance on recycling and disposal of waste management, etc.

The phrase usually relates to all types of waste, whether produced during the withdrawal of raw materials, the dispensation of raw materials into final goods, consumption of final good, or other human activities such as metropolitan (institutional, residential and commercial), farming and social (household hazardous waste, health care and sewage sludge, etc.) The objective of waste management is to minimize the hazardous effect of waste materials on health, environment or aesthetics.

The practice of waste management varies country-wise (developed and developing nations), region-wise (urban and rural area) and sector-wise (residential and industrial). While urban regions may employ advanced machines and the latest technology to supervise the waste, rural areas may be more dependent upon human labour; residential areas may utilize safe and sound processes whereas industries may utilize giant machines, etc to control the factory waste products. The waste materials at the institutional and residential level in the metros and cities are administered by the local authorities also known as Municipal Corporation; while the management of harmless industrial and commercial waste is accomplished by the generator of those waste.

I would now like to point out the most commonly used methods for waste management:

Landfills – This is managed by throwing the daily garbage in the landfills; it is the most common method used today.

Recovery and Recycling – Through this method, the useful items from the discarded is extracted for the next use such as conversion into energy, usable heat, fuel, electricity, etc.

Combustion or Incineration – In this method, community solid wastes are burned at high temperatures to convert same into gaseous products or residue.

Plasma Gasification – Plasma is an electrically charged gas. In this method, the molecular bonds of the waste are broken down due to the intense heat in the container.

Waste to Energy – In this method, the non-recyclable waste materials are converted into useful electricity, heat or fuel through various processes.

Composting – It is a natural process of bio-degradation; it converts the kitchen, plant and garden waste into nutritional food for the plants.

Waste Minimization – The best method is to minimize the creation of waste products by repairing the broken utensils, avoidance of plastic bags, etc.

It is important that we are protective of our environment and always follow the 3Rs of waste hierarchy: ‘Reduce’, ‘Re-use’ and ‘Recycle’ to save our environment.

The topic allocated to me for our today’s assembly is ‘Waste Management’. We as human beings should necessarily be aware and cautious about this topic.

This term means the management of the waste. So, what exactly does waste mean? As our teacher has always taught us that waste means something that is eliminated or discarded as no longer useful or required after a stage. It is something worthless.

We as human beings should understand that everything that is called waste, involves some cost and effort of somebody or the other. We should minimize or further aim at eliminating the waste from our lives. Waste is both a consequence and a symptom of lives lived or things used unwisely.

Waste management is the science that deals with the prevention and monitoring of waste. Though it is a science, it is not a difficult one. We do not need a rocket science implementation for this. It is as simple as monitoring our activities and actions so that we ultimately release the least amount of waste.

Collection of waste and disposal of rubbish plays an extremely important role in the global cleanliness and sustainability drive. Most crucial is this accompanied with people’s health and the conservation of resources being the responsibility of every government. Our government has created many garbage dumps that indicate solid waste in a separate box and other waste in separate boxes. This is deliberately done to make it convenient for the companies or government to get this waste recycled and ready for next use in some other form.

In earlier generations during our great grandparent’s times, people used to dump their waste by digging a hole beneath the surface. Then, this was considered the best as this could easily be decomposed and act as the fertilizer of some sort. But for our generation or the coming one, this option is not at all feasible. This is so because, the population earlier was less and hence waste creation was less, also due to harsh chemicals and varied artificial products today; it is not at all easy for the waste to be decomposed.

Keeping in mind the healthy pollution-free air and overall environment; we should focus on managing our waste and even monitor the activities of others so that we ensure less creation of waste.

To conclude my point of discussion; I would just request you all to please watch your actions very closely and ensure minimal wastage. We should educate the public on the importance of conserving the environment by managing solid wastes. We all have the responsibility to make people learn the impacts which one can avail as benefits through managing wastes. Please spread the message and help us save our environment. Waste management disposes of the products and substances that you have used safely and efficiently. Rubbish, garbage and waste can cause air and water pollution. Rotting garbage is also known to produce lots many harmful gases that mix with the air and can cause breathing problems in people.

Waste management is something that every household, human being and business owner in the world needs. Many authorities collect such waste and focus on recycling it for the betterment of society. Waste management is one of the mandatory processes which should be followed to avoid pollution and for taking care of the health of the population. Wastes are increasing today in this world due to increased population.

As the population is increasing, the wastes are also being produced in larger quantities. Due to these increasing wastes, the pollution is also increasing. There are two types of wastes mainly organic wastes and inorganic wastes.

Organic wastes are the ones which can decompose easily on soil and become good fertilizers, for trees and plants. The inorganic wastes are the ones which do not decompose or take years to decompose.

The inorganic wastes are the ones which cause soil pollution. These wastes include plastics mainly. The plastics take millions of years to decompose. During rainy seasons these plastics get stuck in the drains and cause overflow of water and flooding.

There are harmful plastics also, when they mix with water or when water passes through them, they seep through the ground and cause both water pollution and soil pollution.

In some places plastics are burned. These burnt plastics generate harmful gases which are injurious to people’s lungs. Nowadays, people put two dustbins for separate wastes one dustbin for organic wastes and one dustbin for inorganic wastes.

The organic wastes are thrown on soils or they are made into organic fertilizers which are good for the growth of crops. The inorganic wastes are either compressed or they are used to recycle.

There are other types of wastes like gaseous wastes which are released from factories. These harmful gases lead to many types of breathing problems like asthma, bronchitis and sometimes lung cancer.

The gaseous wastes should be released with special air purifiers which could cause less harm to the air. These gaseous wastes sometimes lead to acid rain which harms the upper layers of marbles. Taj Mahal has suffered a lot of damages on its marbles due to acid rain.

Management of waste properly causes less pollution which can lead to a lot of damage control. There are mainly three types of waste management; landfills, recycling and composting.

In the process of the landfill, the wastes are put into huge pits on the ground and then it is covered with mud. Landfill procedure is ideal for the dumping of organic wastes. In this process, the decomposition happens fast and it becomes a good fertilizer for plants.

In the process of recycling, the wastes which are dumped are recycled into new items. This leads to the conservation of resources. The process of recycling is ideal for inorganic wastes which take a lot of time to decompose.

In the process of composting, organic wastes are turned into fertilizers, which are needed for the better growth of crops.

If we are alert around our environment and if we take care of our surroundings and dump wastes in a proper manner then we can save the earth from being polluted.

Several concerns are resulting from the inefficient handling of waste. Water contamination is caused by the waste that is pumped into the water bodies. We need to follow proper waste management procedures to solve these problems.

It also includes the reuse and recycling of many objects or resources like cans, papers, glass etc.

There are a lot of things which need to be considered while managing wastes like methods of disposal, environment conditions, transportation of waste, recycling methods, etc. there are different types of waste like solid waste, liquid waste, gaseous waste and hazardous waste. All these need to be managed differently. Waste management can also be considered to be a method which helps in the cleaning of the environment.

Categorization of Wastes

Wastes can be categorized in two parts : organic wastes and inorganic wastes.

Organic Waste - The wastes which can be decomposed easily in the soil and eventually become good fertilizers for plants and trees, are the organic wastes. Organic wastes include food wastes, green wastes, non hazardous wastes, etc. These wastes are good for the growth of crops.

Inorganic Waste - The wastes which do not decompose or take years to decompose are the inorganic wastes. These are the waste which causes soil pollution. The main example of inorganic waste is ‘plastic’ as it takes a lot of years to decompose. Even during rainy seasons, the plastics used to get stuck in drains and sewages and cause flooding. In many places, plastics are being burnt which generates harmful gases which are injurious to human’s lungs.

Methods of Waste Management

Waste can be disposed of through several methods and techniques. Some of them are -

Recycling - The most important method for waste management is recycling. It is a more useful method among others because it doesn’t need any other resources and even utilizes the waste material. It converts the waste products into new products or we can say that it reduces the waste and useless materials.

Landfills - It is considered to be the most common method of waste management. In this process, waste disposal is being done by burying the waste in the land which eventually decomposes over the years.

Composting - Composting is an easy and natural way of waste management. It converts the organic waste into fertilizers.

Our children live in an age where things are discarded without a second thought, only to buy and accumulate more than we often need. With the environmental crisis our world is facing, it's time to make an effort to change this. So, why not encourage our children to take this forward using simple methods such as upcycling and recycling? These are simple but effective ways for our children to understand the need of the hour - to make the best out of waste, for competitions or as a past-time. Your child will learn to reduce the waste generated in our homes and dumped in landfills.

What is upcycling and recycling?

So what do the terms actually mean? 'Recycling' refers to the process of breaking down waste products to reuse them. 'Upcycling' on the other hand simply means reusing waste without destroying it to create something new. Therefore, apart from reducing the amount of waste being dumped into landfills, upcycling lessens the demand for raw materials, which in turn reduces various forms of pollution, and even helps conserve our depleting natural resources.

Best out-of-waste school competition projects are useful examples that your child can experiment with and learn ways to do her bit for the environment . These projects also facilitate creative ideas for using waste, besides learning interesting science facts as well.

Easy best-out-of-waste project ideas

Here are some easy ideas you can make with things lying around the house - cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, fruit peels, crayons, and discarded clothes.

1. Make a pen stand out of a cardboard packet

The next time you open a cardboard packet of tea or a health drink, don't just dump it in your garbage bin. Here is how you can upcycle it to create simple but useful storage or pen stand.

What you need:

A cardboard packet of tea or health drink
Colored paper or plain paper that can be painted or colored
Paints / crayons (optional)
Double-sided tape (optional)

What to do:

Cut off the top flaps of the box
Cut diagonally on the sides of the box and halfway through the center (horizontally) on the front to resemble a stand
Cut out the colored paper according to the shape of the box and glue the paper on the box
If you are using plain paper, paint or color your own designs or patterns onto the paper before cutting and sticking onto the box.
Stick paper on the inside of the box as well to make it look neat.
Stick pieces of double-sided tape onto the back to hang on the wall or simply place it on a table to use as a pen stand.

Suitable for children in classes 6, 7, and 8.

2. Make potpourri out of fruit peels

Did you know that you can use fruit peels and flower petals to make an organic scented freshener? Home-made potpourri is easy to make and also makes a wonderful gift to give friends and family.

Fruit peels (oranges and apple peels are preferred)
Flower petals
Herbs (basil, thyme, rosemary, etc.)
Spices (cinnamon, cloves, star anise, nutmeg, etc.)
Tissue paper
Butter paper
Rubber band
Make sure the fruit peels, flower petals, and herbs are free of dirt
Place them on tissue paper and let them completely dry out in the sun for a few days to make sure they don't have any moisture in them
Place the peels, petals, herbs in the center of a large piece of butter paper
Add your choice of spices to the mix
Crumble and mix them well
Bring the ends of the paper together and secure it with a rubber band
Tie a piece of ribbon over the rubber band for a neat look

Suitable for children in classes 6,7 and 8.

3. Make a snack bowl out of plastic bottles

Most homes have a few empty plastic bottles lying around. Rather than dumping them, you can teach your child how to make snack bowls or organizers out of them.

Empty plastic bottles
Thin strips of cloth
Cut out the lower portions of the bottles using the penknife (supervise the use of the penknife). Make sure they are deep enough to hold the snacks/trinkets.
Paint the containers to make them colorful and attractive.
Stick a strip of cloth over the edges.
Your DIY containers are ready to use.

4. Make a cloth bag out of t-shirts

Fed up of the growing stack of your child's old clothes? Why not use it to make cloth bags that you can carry with you whenever you and your child go out shopping? It's the perfect way to go green!

An old t-shirt
Cut around the collar in a semi-circle
Now fold the t-shirt lengthwise and cut away the sleeves
Then turn it inside out and cut away the hem from the t-shirt
Now cut tassels (from the bottom) about 1 inch away from each other
Knot up the tassels from the front and back together (make tight double knots)
Now knot up the neighboring tassels securely together.
Turn the t-shirt inside out again. Your bag is ready.

Suitable for children in classes 8, 9, and 10.

5. Make candles out of crayon

Collect old and used candles and unused crayons to make these simple decorative candles, which can give your home an elegantly festive look. And metal bottle caps can be used as holders too instead of simply throwing them away.

Pieces of old crayons
Used candles
Metal bottle caps
Vessel for heating the wax
Glitter (optional)

ALERT: Supervise your child when he does the steps that require the use of fire or a heating device.

Place the metal bottle caps in a large pan containing hot water for a few minutes so that the plastic lining on the inside of the caps can be removed easily.
Cut small lengths of wicks and stick them onto the base of the bottle caps with the help of glue.
Peel the paper from the crayons.
Break small pieces of the candle and a crayon of one color into the vessel you'll use for heating wax.
Now place the vessel on the heated pan (on the stove) and allow the wax to melt
Once the wax melts and mixes with the crayon colors, pour the mixture into the metal caps
Spread it out equally with the help of the twig
Sprinkle some glitter on the hot wax
Repeat the process for each color
Once the wax cools and sets, trim the wicks

Suitable for children in classes 9 and 10.

Note: You can even use an old scented candle so that your colorful candles give out a fragrance. Else, you can add a few drops of essential oil while melting the wax for the same effect.

These simple projects are perfect for your child to create a one-of-a-kind product that is made from things that are usually discarded. Encourage her to creatively use waste and do her bit for the environment.

To be effective your welcome speech needs to meet expected, as well as any specific, requirements dictated by the occasion.

The 6 standard welcome speech content ingredients

There are six common or standard content items in a good welcome speech.

Greetings to welcome everyone and thanking them for coming along.
Acknowledgement of special guests, if there are any.
An introduction of the event itself and a brief overview of special highlights the audience will want to know about.
Any important housekeeping information, for instance: where the bathrooms are, where lunch will be served and when...
An introduction for the next speaker, if there is one.
Thanking everyone for coming once more and then concluding having made everybody feel at ease, eagerly anticipating what is to come.

Numbers 1, 3, and 6 are basic essentials you cannot do without. Numbers 2, 4 and 5 may, or may not, be applicable. Pick what you need from them to fit your occasion.

Short sample welcome speech for a conference

Now let's put all six ingredients into an example of a short welcome speech to open a conference that you can adapt for your own speech.

* (This speech is pure fiction! I made it up to show you how it's done. You'll see its tone is formal rather than informal to fit the occasion. I don't think there is a group called Parents United. Example welcome speech - "Readers by Right"

"Sue-Ellen Thomas, Jim Smith, Jane Brown and all of our guests, good morning!

My name is April Molloy, and it's my privilege and great pleasure on behalf of Parents United to welcome you all here today.

We are delighted to have you with us to participate and share in this special occasion, our 5th annual Children's Day Conference. Thank you for coming. That many of you have willingly traveled long distances to be here serves as a reminder to us all just how important our work is.

Writing your welcome speech

Tips to help you get your speech right.

When you're entering information into your speech planner:

ensure you've got all the names of individuals or special guests you need to mention specifically and, that you know how to pronounce each of them. Also check that you know and use their preferred pronouns: them/they, she/her, he/him...
double check the remarks you're going to make about them, or anything else, are factually correct.

Use your introduction of your guests/or the event, as a "teaser" for what is going to come. It will help create anticipation in the audience. Don't ruin it by giving too much away! Just enough to tempt and no more.

Keep it brief. One to two minutes is generally sufficient.

(The word count of my sample welcome speech is 357. It will take approximately 2 minutes to say .)

What does a good welcome speech do?

An effective welcome speech has three important functions. It:

signals the official beginning of an event . It says to the audience, hush, sit down, stop talking and listen. What you came for is starting!
sets the tone for the occasion through the choice of language used . For example, using light-hearted and informal words to welcome guests to a dear friend's birthday party may be completely appropriate. However, the same type of language to welcome family and friends to a memorial service is unlikely to be. In that setting, people generally expect a more solemn and formal word choice. They could be deeply offended and think the use of casual language is disrespectful. Understanding and getting tone right is a key element in the overall success of your welcome speech.
unites the audience . It draws everyone together in the common purpose at the heart of the occasion. For example, at a birthday party, the welcome speech invites everyone to join in celebrating the person whose birthday it is. The welcome speech opening a specialist conference will affirm its principal purpose: the coming together of people with mutual interests to meet and share new knowledge. Or if a welcome speech is given to newcomers in a workplace, club or educational setting, its purpose is to give an introductory overview of how things work to help them feel more at ease in their new situation - to help them develop a sense of belonging.

How to choose the right words

The beginning of getting tone right is to think about your audience and the event itself. Your goal is to unite and bring them together in the main purpose at the core of the occasion. What type of language will do that most appropriately and easily?

To answer that question, think about the common interest everybody shares - the principal reason behind them getting together. It will help guide your language choice.

Is it a fun event like a birthday party for close friends and family? If so, then informal language is likely to be the most apt.

You might hear something along the lines of: "Well, here we all are! The big day has finally arrived. Jean-Marie is 50! Half a century! How on earth did that happen?"

If it's a remembrance service for someone who has recently died, the language you're likely to hear is more formal.

For example: "Friends, family, colleagues, thank you for joining us today to celebrate and give thanks for our dear Jean-Marie. Your presence is gratefully appreciated."

What is appropriate? What is expected? Do spend some time thinking tone through. Misunderstanding and getting it wrong can be very embarrassing for everyone. If in doubt, ask someone whose opinion you trust.

Welcome speech of UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan, Katarzyna Wawiernia at the Energy Week Central Asia and Caspian

On behalf of the United Nations Development Programme, it is a great honour for me to be here at the Energy Week Central Asia & Caspian 2024. I recall speaking here last year, and it is truly inspiring to see how our discussions and collaborations have evolved since then.

Today, as we confront a triple planetary crisis—climate disruption, loss of biodiversity, and escalating pollution – clean and affordable energy emerges as a crucial solution that directly addresses these interconnected challenges. As part of the UN-Energy Pledge, UNDP’s 2022-2025 Strategic Plan places access to energy at the core of its mission. It aims to mobilize partners to provide 500 million more people with sustainable, affordable, and reliable energy by 2025.

The green transition offers tremendous potential, acting as a powerful driver for job creation, human rights protection, social justice, gender equality, women's empowerment, and poverty eradication. Maximizing these potential gains across the SDGs and other international frameworks is best achieved through deliberate efforts to connect the dots and build capacities to reap these benefits, with a commitment to leave no one behind.

Today, Kazakhstan recognizes the need to transition to a greener future and aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. UNDP is actively supporting the government in fulfilling its commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Today, we are proud to share our collective achievements in reshaping the renewable energy sector in Kazakhstan. Since 2018, UNDP has applied the De-risking Renewable Energy Investment (DREI) methodology. This approach is designed to strategically target interventions and create a "risk-return" profile. It encourages private investment in providing reliable, environmentally friendly, and affordable energy solutions in the country.

UNDP has played a pivotal role in adapting this methodology specifically for Kazakhstan. To attract foreign direct investment for the development of large-scale renewable energy projects in Kazakhstan, the site-specific renewable energy auctions system was introduced in 2019. It allowed the country to receive the lowest price for 1 kw of green energy. Today this mechanism is already making a significant impact, transforming Kazakhstan’s renewable energy landscape by facilitating more streamlined and effective development of large-scale renewable energy projects.

In terms of the small-scale renewable energy projects, UNDP was one of the few organizations that supported Ministry of Energy in advocating legislative amendments aimed at fostering the growth of small-scale renewable energy sources in Kazakhstan. The impact of these efforts is substantial. According to estimates, the implementation of rooftop solar installations in just 5-10 percent of households across the country would be equivalent to the energy output of a large thermal power plant with a capacity of 500-1000 MW.

Along with the regulatory and legal framework, UNDP has moved forward in collaboration with one of our strategic partners – “Damu” Entrepreneurship Development Fund and has jointly introduced and tested various financial support programs. It is important to highlight that the financial instruments developed under the entire UNDP-GEF energy project portfolio have significantly improved access to “green” financing for more than 60 projects of small and medium-sized enterprises with a total investment of more than $8 million dedicated to the implementation of green technologies. To ensure the continued sustainability of our efforts, our interventions were reinforced through the integration of green bond coupon rate subsidy instrument into the state support program.

However, the challenges of energy transition and decarbonization extend beyond individual projects or national efforts. They cannot be solved by one country alone, making collective action essential. UNDP is committed to driving systemic changes that support the global shift to renewable energy and inclusive green economies. As the urgency to combat climate change grows, coordinated efforts are more critical than ever. Only through partnership can we accelerate the transition and achieve sustainable, long-term solutions.

Voice – Your voice should reach the last row of the audience. Make sure you can be heard clearly and correctly. We would not want any misunderstandings when presenting the speech.
Maintain eye contact – If you want to draw attention from your listeners, maintain eye contact at all times. Avoiding eye contact would make your listeners believe that you are not interested in getting their attention. In addition to that, it is also polite to look at the audience when you are speaking.

The lectern in front of him was emblazoned with a campaign slogan, “Restore Hope,” an empty vessel into which voters are invited to pour their dreams.

But this was not an election campaign launch. Not really. An election is “more likely,” Singh said, because of his decision to tear up the supply and confidence agreement, but he will still review any confidence or budget votes on a case by case basis.

For now, free of this agreement, it is the NDP alone against the rest of them.

Justin Trudeau is too weak and selfish to stand up to corporate interests, Singh said, and he “has proven again and again that he will never stand up to the elites. He will always cave to corporate greed. And Canadians pay for it every time we pay our bills, buy our groceries or pay the rent.”

Pierre Poilievre will throw fuel on the fire of corporate greed, he said, turning Canadian civic life into “a free-for-all for the rich and the powerful with no one standing between the greedy giants and the rest of us.”

Singh spoke about his recent Liberal allies with scorn, almost in the past tense, as the cause of “endless disappointment and delay.” But he saved his most cutting lines for the Conservatives.

The choice in the next election — which despite Singh’s gambit still might not happen for another year — is between his NDP and Poilievre’s Conservatives, he said.

“There is a battle ahead of us, the fight for the Canada of our dreams, the fight against Pierre Poilievre and his callous agenda of Conservative cuts, the fight to restore hope, and the promise that working hard gets you a good life,” Singh said. “I’m ready for the fight.”

Dressed more for a funeral than a campaign launch in a grey suit and a black tie, Singh staked out the competing visions that he says will define the ballot choice.

“Everything Pierre Poilievre does is designed to take from you and give to the ultra-wealthy. He will sacrifice our kids’ future so that big oil companies can make more money, and so that rich CEOs can make higher profits off the backs of working people,” he said.

“Canadians aren’t selfish or cynical. We believe in lifting each other up, not tearing each other down. We’re a nation of people who take care of our neighbours. We’re a nation of builders. We’re a nation of believers. We will not let them tell us it can’t be done. Because if we are together, nothing is impossible. Big corporations and wealthy CEOs have had their government. It’s the people’s time.”

But he did not quite call for these visions to be put to the electoral test, or linger too long over his role in this government supposedly owned by fat cats. There are plenty of reasons for him not to seek an immediate election, not least that his party has kept the Liberals in minority power thanks to the first ever use of an unusual supply and confidence agreement.

Provincial New Democratic parties might balk at the federal party fighting a third election in five years, particularly in the West. Singh also dodged the question whether his party could even afford it.

Nor was it entirely clear what brought Singh the kingmaker to the brink of regicide.

Singh was adamant that it was not because Poilievre dared him to. He even snickered at the suggestion, and said Poilievre has been saying that for two years.

“I will never ever take advice from Pierre Poilievre,” Singh said.

He claimed his video about ending the deal with the Liberals was prepared “way before” Poilievre challenged him to pull out of the pact at a press conference last week, casting Poilievre’s heckling as more of a political gamble that paid off than a principled call to action.

He did not address recent NDP polling numbers, which are not great, although pretty close to even with the Liberals.

But he was clear that the forced arbitration that ended the recent railway lockout and stoppage was a major factor in his decision. He described that as two large profitable corporations that “colluded to set up a scenario where both those companies were in a labour dispute at the same time.” This is “suspect,” and “not a coincidence,” he said.

But instead of putting the blame on the railways, or letting the labour negotiations proceed, Trudeau “decided to basically reward bad faith,” Singh said.

“That absolutely added to the evidence that we had that Justin Trudeau and the Liberals were too beholden to corporate interests to actually stand up to them, to stand up for Canadians,” Singh said.

All in all, this was an effort to cast a failed relationship as a sort of new beginning, to look back on the New Democrats’ minority marriage to the Liberals in the most charitable light of self-regard, and to let loose bitter criticisms after months of bottling them up.

“We accomplished some significant things for Canadians,” Singh said. “We got dental care for millions of Canadians, we were able to get the first steps on pharmacare. We were able to get things done that made people’s lives better. But it became very clear to me, after having got those important things done, that people need more. And Justin Trudeau is unwilling, does not have the courage, doesn’t have the strength, and is too beholden to corporations, to stop big corporations from ripping off Canadians, which is driving up the cost of groceries, driving up the cost of rent. So we have have now ripped up the agreement, and will move to a vote by vote basis.”
