William Ruto on UoN PhD graduation list after years' pursuit

What you need to know:
- Ruto has been pursuing the doctorate, the highest degree awarded by a university, since August 2012.
He did not graduate in 2016 as he did not meet the requirements.
- The DP has already published his work in two renowned journals, as required by the CUE, which regulates university education.
- Ruto, who is eyeing the presidency in 2022, can move to the lecturer hall should he lose, since he meets the CUE's requirements on teaching staff.
Deputy President William Ruto, who refers to himself as a hustler, will finally graduate in December with a doctorate from the University of Nairobi.
The DP's name was approved on Thursday, alongside six others, by the university's senate.

Mr Ruto has been pursuing the doctorate, the highest degree awarded by a university, since August 2012.
He will graduate with a PhD in plant ecology. The title of his thesis is ‘Influence of human activities on land use changes on environmental quality of riparian ecosystems: A case study of Saiwa Swamp watershed, Western Kenya’.
The DP's graduation on December 21 means that he will be referred to as Dr William Ruto.
Mr Ruto's project was approved in August 2012 and he submitted the thesis in September.
He did his oral examination on October 24 and his report was approved on October 25.
His graduation was approved in a senate meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Peter Mbithi and attended by people including Julius Ogeng’o, the acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs.
Mr Ruto has already published his work in two renowned journals as required by the Commission for University Education (CUE), the regulator.
These are the International Journal of Research in Environmental Science and the Asian Journal of Water, Environment and Pollution.
The 60th graduation ceremony is for students from the schools of health sciences, and humanities.
The deputy president is in the School of Biological Science.
Last month, Mr Ruto was late to the launch of the TVET Curriculum Framework in Gigiri, but he explained to the students that he had to meet his supervisors on the finalisation of his coursework.
The DP told learners at the Kenya Technical Training College that he could not turn down the requirement to defend his thesis.
Those who will graduate with PhDs alongside the DP are Victoria Ameoliza Gioto, Victor Muya Ndambuki, Cheronoh Fancy, Museleku Erastus Kiita, Jacob Kwamina Dodoo and Samso Samuel Ogallah.

The DP, who has a bachelor's degree in botany and zoology and a master's degree in plant ecology, encourages students to further their studies.
While explaining why this was the case, the DP Ruto urged colleges to maintain standards and award certificates to students purely on merit.
Many students take long to complete their doctorate degrees for reasons including a small number of lecturers with PhDs at public universities.
This leaves a few lecturers with the task of supervising students and causes them to pay less attention to the others.
A recent report by the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) revealed that a lecturer with a PhD serves 94 students yet the number recommended by higher education experts is 30.
Kenya has less than 10,000 PhD holders against a need of at least 1,000 annually. Only 369 students graduated last year.

Projects and Funding Available

Taught material
Apart from following a program of research, as a PhD student you will also be offered formal teaching in
- discipline-dependent topics probably from the host school
- medical imaging from the SPMIC
- general topics from the Graduate School.
- workshops and external courses where appropriate.
You will be expected to complete reports, assignments and deliver seminars. It is likely that you would attend a major international conference and these often include additional educational lectures for students.
If English is not your native language then you will have to meet the School and University requirements.
Our postgraduate students can be funded from a variety of sources including UK research council grants and funds from the schools or University.
These schemes may have their own eligibility criteria, application procedures or educational requirements but applicants will always need to satisfy the University of Nottingham eligibility criteria.
European Union students and Overseas Students may apply for University Scholarships but you will need an offer of a place first. There are only a few places and they are highly competitive. The deadlines for such scholarships are quite early in the new year. Further information can be obtained from the International Office .

71st UON GRADUATION LIST [PDF] AND CEREMONY 2024
The University of Nairobi wishes to inform all students who qualified for the award of various degrees and diplomas at the end of the last academic year and members of the public, that the 71st Graduation Ceremony will be held physically on July 2024 starting at 7:00 a.m.. CLEARANCE OF FEES AND ORDER OF NAMES :
Only those who will have completed paying the fees due to the University will be allowed to graduate. ALL graduands are advised to confirm the order of their name with their respective Deans.
GRADUATION/CONVOCATION FEE
Each graduand will be required to obtain a clearance certificate from the relevant Faculty Registrar upon clearance with the respective Departments, Library, Halls of Residence, Games, and Finance Department. In addition, graduands must have cleared any fees arrears and all other dues owed to the University, failure to which shall lead to disqualification from the graduation ceremony.

Graduate Research is the university team responsible for the administration of higher degree by research (HDR) candidature, from application to thesis examination.
Almost 1600 students are currently undertaking a Higher Degree by Research at the University of Newcastle. For each student, we are here to:
- Offer research training advice, workshops and seminars
- Assist in understanding the University’s rules, policies and procedures.
- Oversee the confirmation process
- Review progress reports with a neutral view
- Communicate new opportunities, changes to legislation that impact your candidature and general HDR related information
- Manage changes to candidature and associated scholarship funding
- Manage the thesis submission and examination processes
- Develop and implement strategic initiatives

HDR HQ Newsletter
The HDR HQ e-newsletter is produced monthly to provide Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students, supervisors and administrators with important news and updates.
This includes details of upcoming events and opportunities for HDR students and supervisors, information on any changes to policies or procedures that affect HDR candidature, and tips and general information for students and supervisors.
You will also find all the latest news and upcoming events, and previous editions of the newsletter, on our HDR HQ SharePoint site .
If there is anything that you would like to be included in a subsequent edition of please email Research Training.
Your Principal Supervisor is your key contact throughout your degree. They will provide guidance on all aspects of your research, including on resolving any issues that may impede your progress.
However, you are welcome to discuss any of your concerns with staff at Graduate Research or your Deputy Head of School (Research Training) at any time. Should we not be able to resolve your concerns you may access the University complaints process.
A student complaint may flow from any aspect of a student's educational experience at the University which is considered unfair, unjust or unreasonable.
Emergencies
If you are in an emergency, you should call the police or ambulance service on 000.
If you need to speak to someone urgently outside of business hours, the University provides an after-hours crisis support phone line between 5pm to 9am weekdays, and 24 hours over the weekends and public holidays.
This service is operated by a team of qualified crisis support specialists who can support you to find relief from current distress, explore coping strategies, and safely manage any immediate threats to life or safety. The service offers immediate and short-term crisis support only, not an ongoing counselling relationship, therapy or treatment.
