Boston University is a private institution of higher education in Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1839 as a Methodist seminary, the institution expanded through the years to offer an array of disciplines awarding bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and professional degrees. The university graduated the country’s first woman Ph.D., the first African American woman M.D., and the first Native American M.D. Boston University has one of the largest academic library systems in the United States, and the Twentieth Century Archives contain papers by such notables as Robert Frost and Martin Luther King, Jr. The university’s Center for Computational Science is home to the SGI/Cray Origin2000, a parallel supercomputer.

The university enrolls roughly 30,000 students. Undergraduate programs are conducted by Schools of Education, Management, and Hospitality Administration; by Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Communication, Engineering, Fine Arts, General Studies, and Health and Rehabilitation Sciences; and by Metropolitan College (which offers evening and online courses). Highly motivated students can participate in programs that award both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree upon completion or in seven-year arrangements combining undergraduate studies with medical or dental school. Students can study off-campus at various other prestigious institutions in the area, and many options exist for going abroad. The university conducts graduate programs in many of the same areas as undergraduate studies as well as in medicine, law, dentistry, public health, city planning, and theology.

Boston University’s varsity sports teams, called the Terriers, compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). School colors are scarlet and white. The traditional men’s and women’s Beanpot ice hockey tournaments have Boston University, Boston College, Harvard University, and Northeastern University playing one another. Boston University’s DeWolfe Boathouse serves as the starting place for the annual Head of the Charles Regatta, which attracts participants from around the world.

Mayor Michelle Wu and City of Boston Welcome College and University Students

City departments share preparations across Boston neighborhoods ahead of student move-in period

Thursday, August 29, 2024 - The City of Boston today announced an update on the City's preparations as college and university students move in across Boston to ensure they have a smooth transition into their new homes and communities. A cross-departmental effort, Boston is sharing information on how to access City services including 311, mattress pick up, inspections, BlueBikes, as well as sharing information on parking restrictions and improper storage of waste.

“Students bring so much life to our City, and we are thrilled to welcome them this week,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “I want to thank the many city workers and departments who have prepared all summer to welcome our students back, and to ensure that all of our new residents have safe housing, access to city services and all the information they need. The City of Boston is proud to be home to world-class colleges, universities, and institutions that bring so many brilliant students into our community.”

“My team and I are excited to welcome new and returning students to Boston.  We are committed to ensuring their communities are safe, sanitary and code compliant,” said Inspectional Services Commissioner Tania Del Rio. “We also encourage students to do their part by properly disposing of their trash and keeping their units clean.”

New and current residents are encouraged to connect with Boston 311 to report non-emergency issues and get information. There are three ways to do so:

  • Call 311 (if outside Boston, please call 617-635-4500)
  • visit  boston.gov/311 ,
  • or download the BOS:311 app.

The BOS:311 app is available in the Google Play and iOS stores and currently has a student move-in specific section to streamline reporting.

“The Community Engagement Cabinet is excited to connect with students to help make Boston feel like home. There are many ways to engage with our Cabinet,” said Community Engagement Cabinet Chief Brianna Millor. “I encourage all of our new and returning neighbors to call 311 to identify their neighborhood liaison in the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services. If they are interested in meeting new neighbors and becoming civically engaged, they should reach out to the Office of Civic Organizing to sign-up to participate in Love Your Block, a neighborhood clean-up or attend our next Civic Summit.”

The City’s Inspectional Services, Transportation, Office of Neighborhood Services, Fire, Police and Public Works departments are conducting housing inspections upon request, trash inspections, and distributing informational brochures in neighborhoods with large student populations.

The Inspectional Services Department (ISD) will deploy over 50 inspectors throughout the neighborhoods heavily populated with students. Inspectors will conduct walkthroughs of areas heavily populated with students including but not limited to; Allston, Brighton, Back Bay, Fenway, Mission Hill and Beacon Hill. While canvassing these areas inspectors will distribute informational flyers, offer on the spot inspections and answer questions related to city services.

The City encourages students to avoid used furniture and to notify their landlord immediately in the event of a suspected infestation. In addition, information pertaining to rodent control can be found  here  and questions regarding the housing code can be found  here .

The Boston Transportation Department will be implementing  on-street parking restrictions  on streets in Allston, Fenway, Mission Hill, and Roxbury to help provide parking spaces for vehicles being used by new residents and students moving into those areas. In these areas, ISD is not granting permits for construction from Friday, August 30 through Sunday, September 1 in order to alleviate traffic and parking concerns and promote safety. In addition, on-street parking restrictions signage will be posted in affected neighborhoods. The City encourages residents, students, and families to pay attention to posted signs. For more information on street restrictions, visit  boston.gov/moving .

The City also encourages residents and visitors to maintain an accessible path of travel on sidewalks and at intersections. Additionally, the City urges residents and visitors to not block accessible parking spaces designated for people with disabilities while moving in or out.

“Boston is home to almost 80,000 people with disabilities, so please remember not to block sidewalks or corner curb ramps, including tactile warning pads,” said Boston Disability Commissioner Kristen McCosh. "Also please be aware of on-street parking spaces that have signs designating them as accessible parking for people with disabilities. These spaces can only be used by vehicles with a valid HP/DV parking placard.”

Bluebikes is Boston’s public bike share system. With more than 400 stations and 4000 bikes, it's a fast and convenient way to get around the Greater Boston area. Many of Boston's colleges and universities provide discounts on annual passes for students, faculty, and staff. Students are encouraged to check with their university's transportation office to see if they are eligible. More information is available at  boston.gov/bluebikes . For more information on biking safely in Boston, visit  boston.gov/boston-by-bike . For more information about street safety for pedestrians with disabilities, visit  boston.gov/boston-brakes

The Public Works Code Enforcement Division will be issuing citations for the improper storage of household trash. Residents are asked to place their trash and recycling on the curb by 6:00 a.m. on their scheduled collection day, or set it out the night before after 5:00 p.m.

Due to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) ban,  mattresses and box springs  are no longer collected curbside as part of routine trash collection. Residents are required to make an appointment for a free curbside pick-up at:  Boston.gov/mattress . The residential mattress program does not service buildings with seven units or more. Those residents should consult with their property manager to learn the proper protocol to recycle their mattress. Roughly 75 percent of all mattresses and box springs components can be disassembled and recycled. The recovered materials are used to manufacture a variety of new products including foam padding, fabric, steel springs and wooden frames.

While household furniture can be left curbside on your scheduled pick-up day, we strongly encourage residents to donate the items to a charity or organization that can pass them along to others in need. Items such as televisions, air conditioners and refrigerators require a special pick-up. To schedule an appointment, contact 311. Residents are reminded not to block sidewalks with trash or household furniture set out for pick up. Items should be placed along the curb, leaving room for pedestrians, including people with disabilities or those pushing strollers, to get by. New residents are strongly encouraged to download the City’s free Trash Day app at:  boston.gov/trash-day . Residents can view their collection schedules, set reminders, and search a directory of hundreds of household items to find out the right way to dispose of them.

Students are encouraged to visit  boston.gov/moving  for more information regarding parking restrictions and permits, trash removal and restrictions, and rental requirements.

Boston University grad workers still on strike as fall semester looms

Bugwu will return to the bargaining table with boston university thursday to discuss the most recent proposal, which includes childcare benefits and an annual $45,000 stipend..

Boston University graduate worker students, pictured in March, are striking for fair pay, better healthcare coverage, and stronger benefits.

By Molly Farrar

Boston University graduate workers went on strike in March, leaving some classes without teaching assistants and fellows. Nearly five months later, and with two weeks until the start of the fall semester, the striking graduate student workers still haven’t returned to classrooms.

“We love school. We love this community,” doctoral student Nive Senthilvel told Boston.com. “It was disappointing to see how they treated a significant portion of their workforce, but I would say that overall morale has been high, and we’ve really been leaning on each other and leaning on the community.”

The Boston University Graduate Workers Union overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike starting March 25. The union, which has around 3,500 members, formed in 2022 and is now looking to sign its first collective bargaining agreement.

With the fall semester starting in two weeks, the union, part of SEIU Local 509 , said graduate student workers won’t return to classrooms unless a contract is agreed on.

The workers and the university will return to the table on Thursday, the union said, to discuss what BU called their final proposal .

The graduate workers, who supervise, grade, and sometimes teach classes, have said they are fighting for a “living wage,” improved healthcare, and cost of living adjustments.

Currently, graduate workers are paid between $27,000 and $40,000 a year, significantly below the $62,000 that MIT’s living wage calculator says is necessary to live in Boston, BUGWU said in March .

Senthilvel, a third year doctoral student in BU’s history department, stopped attending the undergraduate class where she worked as a teaching fellow, hosting office hours for those students, and grading their discussion posts in March.

“Even though it was obviously a challenge for undergraduate students, and as somebody who loves teaching and loves building that relationship, it was also difficult for me,” Senthilvel said, “the response from the community of undergraduate students and even staff and our departments has been overwhelmingly positive.”

During the strike, BU didn’t cancel any classes for its more than 37,000 students, and departments replaced any striking graduate workers with other employees to grade student’s work. A spokesperson for the university said the strike did not disrupt any of their 700+ summer courses.

In a statement, a university spokesperson said they’re “hopeful we can come to an agreement” before the start of school. The spokesperson pointed to a contract proposal, which University Provost Gloria Waters referred to as a “new and final proposal” from earlier this month.

“My goal is to get a signed and ratified contract before the academic year begins,” Waters wrote to faculty and staff Aug. 7. “If we do not, the students will not see the benefits of the contract for the full academic year.”

During the strike, the university has also been accused of multiple unfair labor practices, including withholding pay from working students. SEIU filed two charges against the university with the National Labor Relations Board on March 26 and April 5. The university said at the time that “we believe that these charges will be found to be without merit.”

What’s in the contract proposal, and what isn’t?

According to the university, their most recent package offered by Waters includes an annual $45,000 minimum stipend and yearly three percent increases for five years on that stipend for doctoral students.

Other items include a $20 hourly wage with a yearly three percent increase and 14 weeks of paid childcare leave for full-time graduate students with stipends who are new parents, along with a $3,500 subsidy.

Waters also said graduate students will benefit from a $200,000 emergency fund. Doctoral students already have tuition and healthcare covered, the letter said.

“I hope the new package shows our students that we are listening, value their contributions to BU, and want to reach a fair contract with BUGWU,” Waters wrote. “It puts us in line with our peers, and, at the same time, recognizes the constraints of the University budget.”

According to the union’s proposals , grad student workers are asking for an annual $62,440 stipend with cost of living adjustments based on median rent in Boston, including a built-in seven percent minimum raise .

Senthilvel said the contract is still lacking despite “good movement forward” for the stipend amount and for additional parental benefits, but the school hasn’t addressed cost of living adjustments.

“We’re still pretty far apart on the length of the proposed contract,” she said. “(It) really does not keep up with the rate of inflation in Boston and it effectively means that any winnings that we make will be eroded over the course of year to year.”

The Elementary Mathematics Project (EMP) is an NSF-funded project out of Boston University whose overarching goal is to develop and disseminate learning materials that strengthen pre-service elementary teachers’ understanding of mathematics.  Learn More .

Improving Pre-Service Elementary Teachers’ Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching

Our mission.

Mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) refers to the “mathematical knowledge needed to carry out the work of teaching mathematics” (Ball, Thames, & Phelps, 2008). Simply knowing how to do mathematics is not sufficient; teachers must also know the mathematics they teach deeply and in ways that can help their students learn. The importance of developing this mathematical knowledge through coursework and professional development is undeniable (CBMS, 2012).

In light of this need, our mission is two-fold: 1) to develop and test learning materials to improve pre-service elementary teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching; and 2) to develop and test instructor support materials to grow faculty expertise in using our learning materials in their content and methods courses.

Development of EMP Learning Materials

EMP lessons illustration

50+ Lessons and Support Materials

The EMP curriculum includes more than 50 lessons and corresponding support materials spanning 7 key mathematical content areas, or units. These units can be combined in different ways to create two or three college-level courses (depending on credit hours) for teaching mathematics content to future elementary teachers.  The content and pedagogies used in the EMP instructional materials align with recommendations from the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators’  Standards for Preparing Teachers of Mathematics  and the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences’ Mathematical Education of Teachers I  and II  reports. Content focuses on essential concepts and procedures that future elementary teachers need to understand. The lessons were designed to be taught using inquiry and research-based instructional strategies. For example, in order to support the construction of shared meaning, PTs participate in discourse communities where learning revolves around discussions, student-led presentations, and problem solving.

The EMP curriculum includes support materials (print, interactive software, and videos) for faculty members. The support materials include general information related to all units such as documents about setting classroom norms and using discussion-based instruction; information related to each specific unit such as documents about online teaching and the key mathematical ideas; and information related to each specific lesson such as Instructor’s Guides and homework files.  These materials are educative – namely, they were designed so that faculty members could learn from them. Educative features of the Instructor’s Guides include: a) elaborations of the mathematical content, including representations regularly used in elementary instruction, b) suggestions for how to use student-centered pedagogies, c) information about the instructor’s role as a co-participant in the community, d) details about PTs as learners of this content, and e) connections to teaching elementary children the content.

Key Mathematical Content Areas

Topics studied include factors, prime factorization, divisibility, divisibility rules, greatest common factor, and least common multiple. Emphasis is placed on developing a deeper understanding of the multiplicative structure of integers, a central concept in number theory that supports other critical topics in the elementary grades.

unit icon

Geometric Measurement

The Geometric Measurement unit consists of 9 mathematical lessons that explore foundational measurement concepts as well as the justifications of key measurement formulas. Topics studied include area concepts, area and perimeter relationships, area formulas, surface area, and volume. In the  Mathematical Education of Teachers   II  (Conference Board of Mathematical Sciences, 2012) document, these topics are mentioned as ones that future teachers of elementary school students should have opportunities to study in depth.

NOTE: See the Geometry unit for an alternate, updated version of the Prisms lesson that can be used instead of the version posted here.

unit icon

The Geometry unit consists of 11 mathematical lessons that explore core concepts in two-dimensional Euclidean geometry as well as solid geometry. Topics studied include sorting attributes, defining angle, parallel and intersecting lines, defining polygons, classifying and constructing triangles, classifying quadrilaterals, the sum of interior angles of polygons, tessellations, visualization with nets, and prisms. A running theme throughout the unit is on classifying shapes by their attributes.

Number Concepts

The Number Concepts unit consists of 6 mathematical lessons that explore important concepts related to the place value number system. Topics studied include characteristics of the base-ten place value system, different place values, large numbers, decimals, modeling decimal quantities, comparing and ordering decimal quantities, and representing fractions as decimals. There is an extensive focus on place value structure and modeling throughout the unit.

Addition & Subtraction

The Addition & Subtraction unit consists of 7 mathematical lessons focused on the addition and subtraction operations. Video clips to support faculty members in using more student-centered instruction are used by this project. There are 192 video clips across the EMP lessons (1 to 5 videos per lesson). Furthermore, another 108 video clips are in the searchable EMP Video Library.  The video library is organized around five categories: Discourse ,  Mathematical Reasoning ,  Norms, Pedagogical Challenges,  and Extended Clips . The videos provide images of experienced instructors teaching future elementary teachers in mathematics content courses. Each video includes preservice teachers grappling with complex ideas from an EMP lesson and instructors facilitating participants’ engagement with the content. Commentary from the curriculum designers accompanies each clip to provide context, highlight particular actions and questions made by the instructors or students, or explain the instructor’s decision-making.

The EMP project team also created supports for synchronous online teaching of the EMP lessons.  Information for using EMP online outlines strategies, tools, and resources for establishing community and norms, setting up routines for small group work, structures for increasing engagement, and ideas for using online tools such as Google Slides and Jamboards. Additionally, for all 57 lessons, online lesson guides suggest which problems are best to have students work on prior to a class meeting, during small group time, and during whole group time.  These lesson-specific guides contain Google Slide presentations that can be edited collaboratively by faculty and students.  There are also tips for engaging students, collecting feedback, and using the chat and video features during online class time.
