Are you a fast and accurate typist? Do you want the flexibility of working at home while completing simple typing tasks? If so, data entry may be the perfect work from home job for you.

What is Data Entry?

Data entry has been around since there have been typewriters, and even though we use computers and laptops now, the general concept is the same. In short, it requires you to take a recorded or hard copy of a transcript and input it into a computer database.

How you perform data entry varies from company to company but can include anything from scanning documents to listening to audio clips and transcribing information to simply inputting answers from a survey.

What Skills Are Required for Remote Data Entry Jobs?

While there is no degree required to start a data entry job, in general, you’ll need a high school diploma or GED. In addition, you’ll need to have the following soft skills and working knowledge of the programs below.

Basic Computer Skills Needed for Data Entry Positions

Here is a quick overview of the basic skills you’ll likely need to apply for these remote jobs.

Computer Skills

While the specifics surrounding the type of computer skills you’ll need will vary depending on the position, below are some of the basics you should be aware of as you investigate and apply to data entry jobs.

Your ability to type with accuracy and speed can determine how much money you make. In general, the faster you can type, the more money you’ll earn typing from home.

According to Aptitude Test , most data entry positions require you to type at least 45 words per minute (WPM). If you’re uncertain how fast you type, you can test your typing speed for free online with one of these sites:

  • Typing Test

Spreadsheets

Knowing how to organize data into spreadsheets is a standard skill set needed in data entry. Thankfully, if you don’t have a ton of experience here, you can practice data entry on your own using Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel, two of the most common programs used by companies, to gain a bit of experience and confidence beforehand.

Google Docs

From Google Drive and Docs to Slides and Sheets, many companies are linked to some aspect of Google. If you’re not well-versed with Google-based products, sign up for a professional account, and start exploring!

Microsoft Word

At some point in your data entry career, you’ll more than likely be asked to type something into a Word Document. Getting a basic grasp on some of the features of Word is a great way to add one more bullet point of experience to your resume.

Organizational Skills

Organizational skills are a necessity for work at home success as a data entry specialist, from organizing email communications, electronic files and folders, meeting deadlines, and completing projects for several clients. Your ability to organize will be essential to your overall success as you work from home.

Communication Skills

Understanding the significance of clear, timely communication is an integral part of establishing yourself as a dedicated, professional data entry specialist.

Common Communication Platforms Used in Data Entry Jobs

Below are some possible methods of communication your employer may use for day-to-day interactions. It’s essential to familiarize yourself with these communication methods to ensure your professionalism and reliability with your employer.

  • Email:  Familiarizing yourself with email communication is necessary as you participate in more work from home opportunities. Creating a professional email address associated with your website or your business name establishes trust and authority when potential employers contact you.
  • Video Conferencing:  Video conferencing, such as Google Meet and Zoom, have become increasingly popular. Sign up for a free account for either one of these platforms and even hold a meeting or two with family and friends to become more familiarized with them.
  • Live Chat:  Live chat via Facebook Messenger or other platforms such as Slack, Telegram, or Voxer are popular with companies around the globe. These instant messaging systems are often convenient when immediate communication regarding projects is needed.

Now that you’re prepared with what you’ll need to be successful let’s dive into data entry jobs you can do from home.

Companies Hiring Data Entry Clerks

1. capital typing.

Capital Typing  offers data entry services for businesses and offers remote full-time and part-time data entry positions for individuals hired as independent contractors.

Most jobs through Capital Typing are transcription jobs, but there are also content writing positions that come up on occasion.

Positions change, so bookmark this website to refer back to if there isn’t a position you would like!

2. Kendall Creek Communications

Kendall Creek  is a US-based company that hires independent contractors for data entry and research positions for larger companies.

As an independent contractor for Kendall Creek, you’ll complete data entry for:

  • Legal transcription
  • Social security files
  • Veterans Affairs
  • Immigration
  • Legal clients

Pay rates are set by the client but typically pay $1.25-$2.00 per double-spaced page; not a lot of money. You can accept or decline jobs before getting started.

3. Xerox

Xerox  boasts a virtual office program with more than 8,000 work from home employees. They consistently hire for a variety of positions, including data entry and verification clerks. For these roles, it’s best to go to their website and send in your resume, and they will notify you of available jobs.

4. Axion Data Services

Axion Data Services hires US-based independent contractors for part-time data entry work. However, because these positions are in high demand, they rarely have openings, but they still encourage job seekers to apply. For these positions, you must have a high school diploma, prior experience, pass a criminal background check, and have the ability to type 50 WPM. Payments are distributed biweekly via direct deposit, and pay is per piece completed.

5. Sigtrack

Sigtrack hires freelance data entry clerks from all states except California and Massachusetts. For these independent contracting roles, you must be able to accept payments via PayPal, be a US resident, and have your own computer (Mac or PC) with updated software. With Sigtrack, you’re paid per unit and your accuracy rate, so you’ll need to be detail-oriented. According to reviews on Glassdoor , the assignments can be challenging and tedious, and training is on your own.

6. Conduent

Conduent is a business process outsourcing company that has a wide variety of remote job openings. Positions include administrative assistants, customer service representatives, claims, HR, data entry jobs, and more. To find the online data entry jobs on their site, type in “data entry” in the keyword search box and select the remote checkbox. Many of Conduent’s positions are location-dependent, and each company has different qualifications and pay rates.

7. Gainwell Technologies

Gainwell hires a wide variety of employees and occasionally has openings for remote data entry operators. To find the jobs, you’ll need to type in the keywords “data entry” and “remote”. Most positions are location-dependent, and they currently have openings in the US, Puerto Rico, and Bangalore, India.

8. CVS Health

Another great place to find work from home data entry jobs is CVS Health . While they sometimes have straight data entry positions, more often, they have remote openings for electronic eligibility consultants, pharmacy clerks, and administrative assistant roles. These generally require prior data entry and word processing experience. To find these positions, type in the keyword “data entry” and select fully remote under the search filters.

9. Study.com

Study.com  hires independent contractors for freelance writing projects, editing, research, tutoring, reviewing, data entry, and more. In their data entry positions, you will research and evaluate potential partnerships while keeping track of your research in a detail-oriented manner. The preferred qualifications for these positions are experience with BuzzStream, Smartsheet, Microsoft Office, data entry, and link building. With Study.com, you’ll be paid per project twice a month via PayPal, and you’ll also have flexible hours.

10. Bold Business

Bold Business often has openings for remote data entry clerks located in the United States. These positions tend to be full-time, entry-level roles that require applicants to have their own PC, home office setup, and internet access. To qualify for these data entry jobs, you should have excellent communication skills and keen attention to detail. According to Glassdoor , data entry clerks at Bold Business earn an average of $38,000 annually.

11. FlexJobs

FlexJobs  is an online job board where I started my journey as a work at home woman. This site holds many legitimate job opportunities in data entry and every area imaginable within the realm of working at home. The cool thing about FlexJobs is they hand-screen every job listing for legitimacy, so you never have to worry about data entry scams.

Other Online Typing Jobs

12. general transcription jobs.

While medical and legal transcription jobs are two popular options for data entry job seekers, general transcription is another excellent opportunity to make money in this field. As a transcriptionist, you’ll listen to audio files and transcribe them into written documents. You’ll most likely take a generalized test for typing speed and accuracy. Most companies pay per audio minute for general transcription.

Here are a few companies hiring for general transcription work:

  • TranscribeMe

13. Closed Captioning

Closed captioning is the perfect work from home data entry job for those who enjoy listening to others speak and watching videos! Some reputable closed captioning companies that are now hiring are:

  • Transperfect

One other perk when working for these companies is the number of different job possibilities. Often, closed captioning job sites offer other content creation, translation , and transcription job opportunities.

Complete Short Tasks

Below are several companies that hire for freelance data entry positions. While the pay may not be the highest, these positions can get some experience under your belt, and add a little extra cash to your wallet.

14. microWorkers

On microWorkers , you can earn money by completing short tasks. These tasks are generally entry-level tasks that don’t require prior experience. If you’re starting within the field of data entry, microWorkers might be a decent place to get your feet wet. However, be sure to do your own research on this company, as they get mixed reviews on Sitejabber.

15. Amazon Mechanical Turk

Amazon Mechanical Turk ( MTurk for short) is a marketplace where you can help individuals with tasks like data entry and content moderation. These tasks are often smaller, quick tasks, and pay depends on the individual or company who posts the microtask. The pay isn’t great, often pennies per task, but may be worth checking out if you don’t have anything else going on.

16. Clickworker

From creating and correcting texts to surveys and more,  Clickworker  is a great space to get moving within the field of data entry. As an independent contractor, you’ll complete a variety of micro-tasks based on your skill set. The pay typically isn’t very high, and your overall monthly income can fluctuate (as with other micro-task job sites) as a Clickworker. This site also has quite a few mixed reviews , so do your research before joining.

Fiverr is an online marketplace where freelancers post their services for sale. Services range from graphic design and photography to copywriting and data entry. With Fiverr, you decide how much to charge, and once someone purchases a gig from you, Fiverr will take a 20% fee from the final price. This post has some good tips for getting started on Fiverr .

Use a Staffing Agency to Find Data Entry Work

One underutilized place to find legit data entry work is through staffing and temp agencies . The great thing about going through a staffing agency is you can find flexible work schedules like part-time hours, temporary work, per diem, and of course, remote work roles.

One thing to note about these jobs is you will often be doing more just than data entry tasks; you may also provide customer service, answer phone calls, verify signatures, create PowerPoint presentations, and work on other clerical duties. Another nice thing about working with a staffing agency is these jobs tend to pay better (at least minimum wage, often more) than the freelance gigs we listed above. It’s also a great way to get your foot in the door with a company; some positions may become full-time permanent roles.

Here are some staffing agencies to check out:

18. Kelly Services

Kelly Services is a staffing agency that has jobs for US and international residents alike. To get started with your data entry job search, type in the role you’re searching for and leave the location blank. On the next screen, you’ll be able to narrow down your search to just the work from home jobs.

19. Robert Half

Robert Half is a talent agency that specializes in US jobs in the areas of administrative work, finance, legal, marketing, and technology. On their site, you can narrow your search by location (including remote work), specialization, and job type.

Online Data Entry Job Scams to Watch Out For

Unfortunately, work from home job scams are out there, and data entry is just another spot scammers like to reside. Data entry is an easy target as it’s often simple to impersonate and create seemingly legitimate job opportunities.

They’ll often swipe copy from an actual job posting and mimic every detail.

Because of this, you’ll need to vet every job to ensure you’re avoiding scams. I’ve personally been burned by  work from home job scams  (I lost almost $1,500 as a stay-at-home mama with zero income at the time), and recouping the money was impossible.

These scammers hide behind fake email accounts, phone numbers, SKYPE IDs, and Facebook accounts that seem real.

So how can you tell legitimate companies from fakes? We have researched the data entry jobs above, but you’ll need to do your due diligence as well.

Red Flags to Help You Spot Scams

  • High Pay for Entry-Level Work : Legit data entry jobs tend to pay between $12-$20 per hour (often lower). Beware of sites advertising data entry jobs paying $40 or more per hour!
  • Paid Training : Believe it or not, this is often a huge red flag. Always ask to speak with people in person who have completed the training. Some specialized areas (like the ones mentioned above) will have programs where you’ll earn a certificate or other training programs (such as legal transcription and medical or pharmacy transcription); however other data entry jobs do not require training.
  • Fees to Join: Asking you to pay upfront for “equipment” you’ll need to complete the work (often asking you for your banking information).
  • Check Cashing: Asking you to cash a check so that you can buy the equipment you’ll need to work from home (this is how those scammers got me).
  • No Social Proof: Your inability to locate credible social proof on the company: All companies have some type of online presence.

Researching Jobs Before You Apply

Be sure to complete your due diligence and take some time to investigate any company that shows interest in hiring you.

Some tips when going through the hiring process and investigating data entry jobs:

  • Check the Better Business Bureau for reports on the company
  • Ask for references or look for online reviews of the company on Glassdoor or Indeed
  • Ask for a signed contract

The small amount of time needed to ensure that you’re hired on with a legit data entry position can potentially save you thousands of dollars, plus the added headache of having your personal information stolen.

Data Entry Jobs Wrap-Up

There are many options for starting a data entry position from the comfort of home!

From transcription to micro-task data entry jobs to full and part-time positions, there are many levels of work out there.

Some opportunities offer higher pay dependent upon the experience you bring, while other work from home data entry jobs are smaller-task oriented with lower pay rates.

Try one or several of these data entry positions, and let us know your experience!

23 Best Data Entry Jobs From Home (Earn $35+/Hour)

Data entry jobs, in particular, stand out because they’re easy to do, and an entry-level position may require only a high school diploma, Internet access, and some basic Excel skills.

What’s not to like? There are a couple of things:

  • Low Wages: Data entry job descriptions sound appealing, but wages tend to be low, and higher-wage jobs have a ton of competition.
  • Scams: Too many positions ask you for money upfront to buy software or complete training — a warning sign the remote job isn’t a job but a scam taking advantage of hopeful applicants. (Some legit platforms charge subscriptions to filter out scams.)

We decided to review data entry specialist online jobs and platforms individually and see how they hold up.

If you are interested in data entry as a side hustle , part-time, or full-time job, you’ll find all the information you need here, including a list of the best online data entry jobs today.

How Do Data Entry Jobs Work?

At its simplest, data entry requires, well, entering data. This broad term means different things to different companies. But all data entry specialists do this:

  • They receive raw data from a source, such as a web form or a stack of papers.
  • They enter this data into a computer system or another format to be processed.

The data entered could be just about anything — ordinary text, industry-specific codes, order numbers, images, or even audio and video files.

Data entry won’t be the most intellectually stimulating job in the world. Repetition, speed, and accuracy are key data entry skills.

How Can I Do Data Entry Work From Home?

Most jobs allow you full access to your data entry work anywhere — and anytime — you have Internet access. So you could work from your living room, car, the library, a waiting room, or while on vacation. You get the idea.

To get started in your data entry career, you’ll need a few basic skills and some software and equipment you probably already have:

  • Fast Typing: The most advanced skill you’ll need is the ability to type quickly. If you’re considering transcribing audio or video, this will be particularly important since you‘ll get paid per audio minute – the faster you type, the more you earn.
  • Accurate Typing: You have to be able to enter data accurately. Accurate typing is important for transcribing and for more standard data entry jobs. If you can’t already touch-type quickly and accurately, learning this skill before you start searching for work could save you a lot of time in the long run.
  • Hardware: A laptop and your own mobile hotspot can set you free to work anywhere you have a solid cell signal. But you could also work on a home WiFi network, a public network at the library or a public park, or even at a restaurant or hotel with WiFi. Consider a desktop computer with two monitors if you’d rather set up a home office. Be sure to get a keyboard with a number pad — or a separate number pad — if you’re doing numerical data entry. Some jobs may require devices like scanners.
  • Software: Some jobs require company-specific software, but you shouldn’t have to buy this yourself! Other companies use standard programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, Quickbooks, or Google Docs. A Mac or Windows operating system should work unless your employer has specific requirements. But a Chromebook could add extra steps if your company uses Microsoft products.

And that’s about it – if you can tick these things off the list, you’re good to go.

23 Best Data Entry Jobs from Home

Here are the top data entry jobs and platforms that allow you to work from home:

  • Mechanical Turk (Amazon)
  • Virtual Vocations
  • Axion Data Services
  • DionData Solutions

Platforms For Finding Data Entry Work

Many new work-from-home data entry specialists like to find work on freelancing platforms. These platforms can connect you with people who need data entry work.

You can set up a profile as you would on social media and get job alerts via text or email when a job posting matches your skills and experience.

These platforms have a lot more than just work-from-home data entry jobs. They also have typing jobs and positions for customer service representatives, graphic designers, freelance writers , transcribers , administrative assistants, social media managers, and so on.

Some of my favorite platforms are:

1. Flexjobs

Flexjobs is a job board providing all kinds of flexible work; this frequently includes data entry positions.

Job leads on Flexjobs are handpicked and researched by humans to filter out scams. This should put your mind at rest in an industry like data entry, but this service comes at a price. You’ll need to join Flexjobs and pay a monthly subscription.

In an industry as low-paid as data entry, a $15 or so subscription may seem steep, but it’s worth considering — especially if you’re interested in applying for other kinds of flexible work.

Flexjobs now has online skills tests so you can prove your typing skills or software skills to prospective employers.

FlexJobs logo

Price: $14.95 30% off using code 'FLEXLIFE'

The biggest site for finding remote, work-from-home jobs, both full-time and part-time for your skillset. The trained researchers at FlexJobs hand-screen job listings to eliminate ads and scams found on other sites. Find everything from entry-level to executive positions at FlexJobs.

On Fiverr , you set up a profile to “sell” your data entry skills to buyers who need them. The more prior experience you have and the better you market yourself, the more success you’ll have.

The most successful “sellers” have multiple skills, but you could set up shop as a data entry pro and see if you get any hits.

The more years of data entry experience — and the more satisfied clients you can list on your profile — the more success you’ll have selling your services.

In most cases, you’d compete with service providers from throughout the United States and the world.

Fiverr logo

List your data entry skills for hire on Fiverr today.

Upwork is another platform where you could sell your data entry skills. About 70,000 new job postings appear on the site each week, but only a fraction of those seek a data entry specialist.

Still, by joining this service and setting up an attractive profile, you could get connected with contract work. Most remote data entry job postings want your labor on a project-by-project basis.

Finding full-time or even part-time work isn’t as likely.

4. Mechanical Turk (Amazon)

Mechanical Turk (otherwise known as MTurk) is Amazon’s crowdsourcing marketplace. This service matches remote workers with people who need small jobs completed.

MTurk uses the term “microtasks” for these jobs requiring little human expertise. Many microtasks are similar to data entry, or they include data entry. So you can probably find some tasks that match your skill set.

For example, someone may want you to transcribe an audio recording of a meeting — which is a lot like data entry.

MTurk is a growing platform, and it works for a lot of people. But be careful: Some work-from-home tasks take a lot of time and do not pay well. Many pay significantly below a living wage.

It’s even possible to get stiffed on a contract if the employer isn’t 100 percent satisfied with the work. Some postings pay in Amazon gift cards.

And, unlike Flexjobs, MTurk’s job postings aren’t filtered for scams.

5. Virtual Vocations

Virtual Vocations works like Flexjobs, except you can join for free — on a limited basis. As a free member, you’d get a hand-picked list of work-at-home data entry job leads daily.

To get full access, you must upgrade to a paid membership.

With a monthly subscription, you can see all job postings, build an attractive profile to attract people who need data entry work completed and take online courses to sharpen your skills.

Pure Data Entry Jobs

As mentioned previously, “data entry” is a broad term. There aren’t many companies dedicated solely to data entry in its purest form, but some of the few are listed below.

If you follow any of the links below, you’ll notice that the websites are outdated, which speaks volumes about this industry.

However, these sites are likely your best bets for earning a living wage from data entry.

6. Axion Data Services

Axion Data Services specializes in data entry services, as its name suggests.

The company does not take new applications often, but it’s good to be registered in its database if it releases new roles.

Axion requires two to three years of data entry experience and typing skills of 50 words per minute (wpm), so this isn’t one for beginners. You also need to pass a criminal background check. When you get on board, Axion works as your data entry agent, connecting you with contract work.

Axion pays independent contractors on a piece-by-piece basis, and you can expect to work 20 to 25 hours a week. The wage is generous too, which is why securing a place can be tricky.

7. DataPlus+

DataPlus+  hires data entry clerks, MS Access database programmers, mail/document handling clerks, and administrative personnel.

You must complete a criminal background check, but the only other requirements are owning a computer and having high-speed internet access.

To apply, upload the relevant documents and wait to be contacted.

8. DionData Solutions

DionData Solutions is a data management services bureau that works for government agencies and companies. The company often hires typists to do data entry, which typically involves moving information from one source to another.

You could be processing information such as medical claims, surveys, or inventories. You must be able to type at a speed of 60 wpm, possess basic computer skills, and be a United States citizen.

9. SigTrack

SigTrack processes voter registrations and petition signatures. The work you complete will involve figuring out whether signatures are from voters.

Due to the nature of the work, you must be a United States citizen, and the work revolves around the petition season, meaning you will probably need to look for another job, too.

To be accepted, you must complete a test to prove you can achieve 98% accuracy on your work. You must also have a single 4k or double monitor and do a Skype call to prove your U.S. identity.

They pay on a piece-by-piece basis; the pay may seem low at first, but most users double or triple their pay within the first few days.

10. TDEC (The Data Entry Company)

TDEC  is the world’s largest provider of business processing outsourcing services to government and commercial clients. They’re in constant need of data entry operators.

However, they don’t advertise job positions on their site – you’ll need to send an email with your application and resume and wait for them to get back to you with positions as they open up.

Because positions are less advertised, you may have a greater chance of success.

Microtask Jobs

A microtask is a small and simple job that a human rather than artificial intelligence must complete.

Although microtasks seem distinct from data entry, there’s a lot of overlap; both consist of simple tasks anyone can do.

Microtask websites also frequently host jobs in data entry due to this overlap.

11. Clickworker

Clickworker  is primarily a microtasks website, but many of the tasks available include data entry work. After you register, you must complete an assessment to demonstrate your ability; your performance will dictate the number of jobs available to you.

Like most similar sites, Clickworker pays on a piece-by-piece basis. They also have other jobs available which are fairly low-skilled, such as writing and researching.

You can sign up to have jobs sent to your inbox

12. Microworkers

Microworkers is another microtask site. It offers a variety of tasks, including data entry. Some of their jobs pay better than other similar sites, such as those named above.

However, a drawback is that you get paid only for approved work, which can be frustrating, but you should only accept jobs you know you can complete.

Microworkers pays twice a week.

Transcription Jobs

There’s a lot of overlap between data entry and transcription. Data entry typically involves transferring information and data from one source (such as a scanned photo) to another, while transcription involves transferring information from audio or video format into writing.

The same skills are needed – basic computer skills, word processing experience, and quick typing.

13. AccuTran Global

AccuTran Global  provides transcription and similar services. They mostly offer transcription jobs but sometimes have data entry positions available, too.

To secure a role, you must score well on the assessment and have a typing speed of at least 60-70 wpm. They also only hire workers from the UK and Canada.

You may be offered work in a different department if you have a good track record and additional competencies. Therefore, you could start by doing transcription or data entry but later move to something more intellectually stimulating.

14. Kendall Creek Communications

Kendall Creek Communications  specializes in legal transcription. This company has a long list of clients, including U.S. government agencies, and is a big employer of remote workers for transcription, data processing, and market research roles.

However, make sure that you apply through the official website as there are sometimes scams where people pretend to be from this company.

15. GoTranscript

GoTranscript is an audio and video transcription services company. It offers the most positions in transcription and video captioning but also has data entry jobs available.

If your application is accepted, you must undergo training and certification before you can get started.

16. Quicktate

Quicktate specializes in the transcription of voicemails and other audio content. You’ll struggle to earn a living wage unless you can type faster than 50 wpm.

However, if you speak more languages, you can earn more. You must pay for a background check yourself. Despite this requirement, Quicktate isn’t a scam.

17. Scribie

Scribie is another audio transcription company, but it also offers data entry positions. Once a job is selected, you must complete it in two hours, and you’ll be assigned a score depending on your accuracy.

Scribie hires beginners, but you’ll likely be put on a waiting list until they have a slot available.

Once selected, you must take a test; if you pass, they’ll hire you immediately. If you fail, they’ll point out where you went wrong and give you a chance to take a retest up to 10 times.

There’s also the chance to get promoted to ‘reviewer’ status if you consistently produce high-quality work.

Other Top Data Entry Employers

Although there aren’t many companies left that hire solely for data entry services, there are considerably more companies regularly looking for people to do their data entry work.

Here are a few of them, but you might be able to find more jobs by searching for data entry work on websites like Indeed, Monster, and LinkedIn.

18. Cass Information Systems

Cass Information Systems is a huge multinational financial services firm.

They sometimes offer remote data entry positions, but you must first attend in-person training in Missouri or Ohio to secure the role.

19. Capital Typing

Capital Typing  calls itself the ‘world’s smartest office.’ Capital provides various virtual office services, including data entry, transcription, translation, and secretarial services.

With data entry, you can expect to do work such as data extraction, research, database development and management, direct mail, and marketing services. If you apply for a position and the firm is interested in your application, a recruiter will invite you to a Skype interview.

If you prove yourself to be a reliable and capable worker, you can be promoted to a higher position.

20. GorgeWarehouse

GorgeWarehouse  is an online retailer – not an obvious data entry employer. However, it often advertises for data entry positions on the employment section of the website.

To apply, you must be able to type at a speed of at least 30 wpm. GorgeWarehouse offers telecommuting as a perk, meaning this position is technically an online job.

Pay is also higher than most data entry positions.

21. Working Solutions

Working Solutions  is a call center that offers many work-at-home positions, including data entry clerk jobs.

You must fill out your application and take online assessments, and it can take two weeks to get your application approved after passing the test.

A knowledge of French or Spanish is an advantage as Working Solutions operates worldwide, and these languages are in demand.

Working Solutions is a woman-owned company that hires independent contractors for data entry work. (It does not do business in California, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington.)

To apply, you must buy your own background check, but Working Solutions is a legitimate community — not a scam.

22. Xerox from Home

Xerox from Home – Xerox is a printing supplies company with an entire work-at-home division. It regularly hires for lots of positions, including data entry.

You can go on to the employment section of their website; be sure to filter by virtual working options.

23. Lionbridge

Lionbridge  isn’t exclusively a work-from-home company, but work-at-home data entry jobs have appeared on its job board.

The company does a wide variety of creative work for a diverse client base. You’d be a good applicant if you speak multiple languages since Lionbridge does multilingual video transcriptions.

In most cases, this is more sophisticated work than simple data entry. You could work with AI to caption videos, for example. If you’re looking for simple entry-level work this isn’t for you.

How to Avoid Data Entry Job Scams

As I already mentioned, be wary of scams. Here are some tips on how:

  • Never agree to pay for any equipment
  • Be skeptical of any data entry jobs that seem particularly high-paying
  • Do a quick background check on Glassdoor and TrustPilot for sites not listed here

There’s so much info available on the internet these days. There’s really no reason to get scammed as long as you’re thorough about your research and don’t rush into any snap decisions.

How Much Can You Make Doing Data Entry from Home?

The exact amount you can make from data entry depends on two factors: your performance and the type of data entry you’re doing.

Performance

Data entry work is usually paid on a piece-by-piece basis – or by audio minute if you’re doing transcriptions. You’ll rarely earn an hourly wage. This means your earning potential depends heavily on your ability to type quickly and accurately.

The faster you work, the more work you’ll have time to do.

If you’re consistently producing good work, there’s also more chance of a promotion to a reviewer or a better-paying department.

Type of Data Entry

The type of data entry you’re doing dictates your pay, too.

  • Microtasks: The least lucrative option is microtasks, where the average pay is just $2 to 3 an hour.
  • Traditional Data Entry Websites: On the other end of the spectrum is working with traditional data entry websites; for instance, Axion pays $15 to 19 an hour. Unfortunately, you could spend an entire year on a waiting list before getting a chance.
  • Transcription Jobs: Transcription jobs fall somewhere in the middle. A typical wage to transcribe content is around $10 an hour, which is fair, but not life-changing. However, your earning potential could be much higher if you increase your typing speed or if you’re prepared to specialize – legal and medical transcription is a lot more lucrative.
  • Data Entry for Large Companies: The ‘other’ section of the data entry jobs is a lot more variable. GorgeWarehouse offers $10.50 an hour, but other companies may offer less. In general, you can assume that large companies looking for remote employees will offer a decent wage, but some FlexJobs postings may be lower.

Start Your Data Entry Career

The biggest pull of data entry is the lack of requirements and low startup costs. However, as we’ve seen, most high-paying data entry employers hire irregularly and require you to stay on their waiting list for an extended period.

Clearly, the idea of being able to make easy money straight away just by becoming a data entry clerk isn’t quite true. You can choose between starting immediately and accepting a minimal salary or waiting for a while and securing a higher salary.

There’s also a third choice – to consider a different online job. As we’ve seen, data entry is closely linked with transcription; specializing can future-proof your job and help you earn more money . There are also many other online jobs available, from online proofreading jobs to website testing to English teaching.

Ultimately, the choice is yours. If you want a stress-free online job, data entry work could be ideal – but make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into first.

15 Real Data Entry Jobs from Home without Fees

' data-src=

Probably the most common question emailed to me about working at home is how to get real data entry jobs without paying a fee.

While there are real data entry jobs out there, scammers often use work at home data entry jobs to lure their victims. So here’s the real deal on data entry work, and a few places to look for work if you find you still want to do online data entry work from home.

What is data entry work?

Data entry actually encompasses many job types. At it’s basic, it’s entering data into a company’s system. The data can include just about anything from words, numbers and/or codes. It could be simply entering data, or may include verification and editing of the data.  It can be time consuming and tedious, especially since pay isn’t that great. For that reason, you want to make sure it’s a job you want to do.

While some pay an hourly wage, many pay based on output (i.e. number of items entered).  The median hourly wage is about $13 per hour for all data entry type work and may be less for home-based data entry workers. Most the jobs listed below pay anywhere from $7 to $20 per hour.

What is required to do data entry.

In many cases, data entry workers need to know specific terminology of the industry or how to use a specific program into which the data is entered. For example, the medical field uses date entry workers where a knowledge of medical and/or insurance terms is important.

Data entry candidates may need to pass a typing speed and accuracy test. To test yourself, you can taking a typing test online by Googling typing test, or try out TypingTest.com . Note that these test for general typing speed and accuracy. Data entry jobs may have typing tests more geared toward data.

Finally, many employers are looking for experienced data entry techs. While some data entry from home jobs are open to entry-level workers , this is not a job you can simply sign-up to do. Any company that says otherwise is probably scamming you.

How to get a work at home data entry job.

The most important thing to remember about data entry work is that any company that charges you money to get hired isn’t legitimate .

Beyond that, data entry from home is like any other job. Employers will want you to prove you have what it takes to do the job, including data entry skills. You may be asked to take a typing test.  Further, you might be required to have specific equipment (i.e. high speed Internet and reliable computer).

IMPORTANT NOTE!! If the company says you have to buy their software or equipment, skip the job. This is another way scammers take your money, by selling you their equipment and tools. Legitimate companies may require you to have specific tools or equipment, but it won’t care how or where you get them, and it won’t sell them to you.

Where to look for work at home data entry jobs.

Data entry jobs are one of those types of work at home that you’ll want to be very careful in pursuing as scammers are looking for you. You’ll want to arm yourself with knowledge on how to spot scams to stay safe.

Below is a list of companies that hire home-based data entry workers. Please note:

If you get an error with a link below, go to the main home page of the site, and search for “careers,” “jobs,” or “work with us,” types of links. What Is Data Entry?

A data entry job is entering data from one source into another using a computer .

This can be nearly anything including typing up information that had previously only be stored in hard copy, but nowadays is more often work like transcription or subtitling.

Some companies have data entry as part of administrative assistant job descriptions but most outsource data entry work.

There is now an entire industry whose business model is to serve as a middleman between these companies and home-based, independent contractors who provide data entry services.

There are job listing websites you can use to find companies who need your help with data entry.

Top Data Entry Job Websites and Companies

While there are plenty of data entry scams, there are also plenty of legit companies that are connecting data entry workers and companies who need their help.

Going through the list below should get you enough data entry work from home clients to fill your schedule, regardless of whether you’re looking for full-time or part-time work .

1. FlexJobs

FlexJobs is one of the biggest platforms for finding work-from-home data entry jobs.

Every job on FlexJobs is vetted so there are zero scam job postings on their job board.

You’ll apply directly to the company that is looking for a data entry specialist and be paid directly by that company.

If you’re looking for entry-level data entry work, Upwork is a great website for you.

There are plenty of jobs for complete novices so you can dip your toe in and see if you like data entry.

You’ll bid on each job individually so you can pick and choose the ones that look appealing to you.

These jobs may not pay much, but they can lead to more lucrative work on the Upwork platform or be leveraged as experience on any of the other platforms.

One of the top freelance marketplaces, Fiverr is a great spot to find lots of work-at-home jobs, including data entry, translation, writing, transcribing, photo editing, and more.

One of the best things about Fiverr is that instead of applying to data entry jobs, clients who need your help will contact you.

4. Clickworker

While signing up for Clickworker is free, you’ll need to fill out your profile and take some tests to see what sort of data entry jobs you qualify for.

Even if you don’t perform well on the tests, if you consistently deliver great work, Clickworker will increase your rating and the number of jobs you get.

Clickworker will pay you either weekly or monthly through PayPal.

5. Amazon Mechanical Turk

Amazon Mechanical Turk is the biggest microtask website and has an abundance of data entry job listings.

You’ll need to register with the site in order to choose HITs (Human Intelligence Tasks) that appeal to you.

Certain tasks may require you to complete a qualifier.

You get paid via Amazon gift card or bank deposit when your work is accepted.

Amazon MTurk does have a few shady tasks among their thousands of available tasks so don’t pick up any HITs that feel suspicious.

Avoid handing over personal details like your address, Social Security number, or bank account information to prevent identity theft fishing and don’t give anyone your phone number or email address to avoid being spammed.

6. SigTrack

Mostly offering seasonal work around the election cycles, SigTrack hires independent contractors to help with voting-related information such as processing voter registration and tracking whether petition signers are voters.

SigTrack workers must maintain at least 98% accuracy to keep their contract and are paid based on accuracy.

SigTrack only hires American citizens and the application process includes a short Skype call to establish your identity.

7. Microworkers

Like Fiverr, Microworkers has a lot of small tasks available, many of which are data entry.

Some of their microtasks even pay better than similar work on other sites.

You’ll only be paid for approved work, but Microworkers will show you the percentage of previous jobs the poster approved, so you don’t waste your time on difficult clients.

Once your $10 payout threshold is met, your earnings from completed jobs will be transferred to your PayPal account.

8. Axion Data Entry Services

Axion Data Entry Services is a platform for experienced data entry contractors who have two or more years of experience and can type 50+ words per minute.

Because Axion deals with highly sensitive information, you’ll be required to pass and pay for a background check, which costs $30.

You’ll also need to pay a listing fee of $5, $7, or $10, depending on how long you’d like to be registered in their database.

While Axion is one of the few platforms that costs money to use, many data entry workers find it to be worth the nominal expense to know all the listings are legitimate data entry jobs , not scams.

9. Working Solutions

While most of the jobs on Working Solutions aren’t data entry jobs, they do pop up occasionally and it’s free to join.

You’ll need to fill out an application and take several assessments.

Working Solutions will contact you within two weeks to let you know whether you’ve been accepted or rejected.

If you’ve been accepted, you can suggest yourself for programs that appeal to you.

(This can be a great way to find virtual assistant or call center jobs, which are both other great ways to bring in extra income.)

10. Scribie

You’ll have to apply to use Scribie to select files, but the process is pretty easy and once you’re accepted, you’ll be able to log in and choose among the available files.

Scribie is one of our favorite transcription jobs, and is pretty easy and simple once you get the hand of it.

Payment is $10 per audio hour to transcribe, which isn’t amazing but isn’t terrible when you’re starting out.

You’ll be paid for completed work via PayPal.

11. The Smart Crowd

The Smart Crowd has several work-from-home careers, many of which are data entry positions.

There is no cost to joining as a service provider, but the pay rate depends on which of the job opportunities you take.

Some jobs pay per task and others pay per hour.

The Smart Crowd was formerly known as VirtualBee.

12. Birch Creek Communications

Birch Creek Communications is a good bet as they’re always looking for high-quality corporate transcriptionists for their corporate clients.

You’ll be transcribing audio files and earning between 40 cents and $1.75 per audio minute, depending on the job, the turnaround time, and the quality of your transcription work.

The Skills and Tools You Need for Data Entry Work

In order to be a successful data entry worker, you will need certain data entry skills and tools.

Office jobs may provide some of the tools but if you’re planning to work at home, you’ll need to already have or be prepared to invest in these tools.

Basic Computer Skills: You’ll need to be able to install new software and keep your computer software up-to-date and your computer virus-free.

Basic Software Skills: You’ll need to know how to use very common software like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and data recording programs.

Advanced Typing Skills: At their heart, data entry jobs are typing jobs.

You’ll need great typing speed and accuracy, and to be able to check your own work with precise proofreading.

Many sites may ask for your word-per-minute typing rate, or WPM, in order to find out your skills as a typist.

High Level of Tolerance for Repetition: Data entry is a repetitive job so if you get bored by repetition, you’re going to hate data entry work.

High Level of Organization: The goal of data entry is to create coherence out of chaos and you’ll need to be highly organized in order to do so.

Being detail oriented will make this easier for you.

Good Communication Skills: Every job requires you to communicate effectively with your colleagues and this is especially true for work-at-home jobs.

Strong interpersonal skills will help you excel in this role.

Home Computer: You can’t work online without a computer.

Trust us, your tablet or phone won’t run all the software you need for a data entry work.

High-Speed Internet Access: Slow internet will make your work painfully slow and reduce your hourly rate to nothing.

Get fast internet if you don’t already have it.

Common Data Processing Programs: G Suite is free with a Gmail address, which is also free.

Microsoft Office costs money so you may want to wait to invest in that until you have a paying client that requires it.

A Comfortable Desk and Chair: You’re going to be sitting at that desk and in that chair for several hours a day so you should be comfortable.

Find a home office setup that doesn’t negatively impact your posture or your wrist health.

A Resume: Many data entry jobs will require you to submit a resume that details your relevant experience and skills.

Ensure that your resume has these 6 critical sections so that you stand out among the other applicants and earn the job.

Go Forth and Earn

If you have the skills and tools listed above, you’re ready to start looking for a data entry job.

Most data entry jobs have flexible schedules and part-time hours, so they’ll fit nicely around your current work, school, or personal commitments.

If you’re looking for full-time data entry work, all you need to do is stack a few different data entry jobs or tasks and you’ll be earning a full-time income from home in no time.

The hardest thing about a data entry job is finding one, and even that isn’t so hard thanks to the list of sites above.

All you need to do is get started, so do that right now.

Pick a site from the ones listed above and set up your profile.

That’s all it takes to get the ball rolling.

  • Typing skills: You also need to be able to type quickly and efficiently while maintaining a high degree of accuracy. Don’t forget to double-check your work.
  • Organization: Data entry is about imposing order on chaos, so you should be organized and always pay close attention to detail.
  • Good communication: Just as in every job – especially the work-at-home ones – the ability to clearly and effectively communicate is an important data entry skill.
  • Listening skills: Some data entry jobs, especially those focusing on lawyers, court reporting agencies, and other legal clients, will transcribe audio files and type what is said.
  • High tolerance for repetition: As you can imagine, data entry can get old – you’re doing the same task over and over with only minor variations, after all. That means data entry can become torture if you don’t have a high tolerance for repetition. You should also be comfortable with sitting at your computer for long periods.
  • Software skills: A data entry specialist should have a broad knowledge of commonly used computer programs, such as word processing software and apps (such as Microsoft Word and Google Docs), spreadsheet software and apps (Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets), and data recording programs.
  • Education: Many advertised data entry jobs are entry-level positions, but many require a high school diploma, GED, or professional certificate.

Equipment Needed for Online Typing Jobs

When it comes to online typing jobs like data entry, there is some equipment you’ll need.

  • Home computer with high-speed internet access. Enough said.
  • Numeric keypad. You may be entering a large volume of numbers while doing data entry, so a number pad is a lifesaver, whether integrated with your keyboard or as a stand-alone peripheral.
  • Comfortable home office. You’ll be sitting at your computer for long periods, so your desk chair should be comfortable and your desk easy to work at (preferably in a way that won’t harm your posture or wrists).
  • Access to common data processing programs. It’s a good idea to have access to as many programs as possible, from Microsoft Office suite to G Suite, so you have the tools to suit any data entry position.

The Pitfall of Easy

I hate to break it to you, but there’s not a lot of money to be made as a data entry keyer. You’ll likely spend many hours on the job, only to make very, very little.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the pay range for a data entry keyer is around $11.79 to $22.94, with an average of $17.28/hour or $35,940 per year. This doesn’t include gigs on freelance platforms, which due to global competition, can be as low as $3-$4/hour.

And those elusive gigs that do pay a decent rate rarely have openings. I was on a waiting list for a data entry job for well over a year before I got called up.

The competition for data entry jobs is steep. When people do get that call, they don’t leave. I stayed with a company for six or seven years until the pay could no longer compete with what I make here on my blog.

And that competition for easy jobs leads to more problems for remote workers.

Companies know that their data entry job opportunities are suitable for even the least experienced of the online workforce. So these businesses are happy to outsource their online data entry jobs to people who are willing to work for pennies.

While once-in-a-blue-moon opportunities to make a living wage doing data entry do exist, those jobs are extremely rare.

This industry is also full of scammers. These scoundrels know that people are desperate for these gig economy positions and that they may let their guard down in hopes of finding the ultimate work-at-home unicorn.

If a job opportunity sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And at many of the sites we discuss below, you are going to find an alert warning visitors that scammers not only exist but they also use legitimate company names in an attempt to weasel into your bank account.

Be careful! Learn how to spot and avoid scams .

That being said, there are some legit companies out there.

Legit Data Entry Jobs from Home

  • AccuTran Global — AccuTran Global is mostly known as a transcription company because that’s mostly what it brings on independent contractors to do. But it sometimes has data entry jobs as well, so keep an eye out. Check the link for my overview of the company, detailing what it’s like for their transcriptionists. That’s likely to be similar to what the company expects of data entry specialists.
  • Axion Data Entry Services — Axion is one of those legit companies that rarely have openings, but it can be good to be registered in its database for when it does. The company only works with independent contractors who have two to three years of experience in data entry. A typing speed of 50 words per minute (15,000 keystrokes per hour) with no errors is needed. The company pays a flat rate by the page (or project), so it really does pay to be fast and accurate. Axion requires a nominal fee to keep you registered in its database – despite this, it is not a scam. Also see: List of no-fee work-at-home opportunities
  • Clickworker — Clickworker lets you sign up to become part of a pool of folks who complete tasks for Clickworkers’ clients. Data entry is one of those tasks, and others include proofreading , copy editing, web research, and surveys. Once you sign up (for free), you fill out your profile and complete short assessments to demonstrate your abilities. The number of jobs available to you depends on how well you perform, and providing excellent work means your earnings will increase. You set your own schedule, they take care of invoicing, and you’re paid either monthly or weekly through PayPal.
  • DionData Solutions — DionData Solutions is currently looking for Data Entry Professional Operators who type 60 wpm with a high degree of accuracy. You should be proficient with computers and able to handle the internet, email attachments, and downloading and opening files. You’ll be working independently, so you should have a high degree of self-discipline. The company expects its online data entry specialists to work on multiple projects simultaneously while sticking to deadlines. U.S. citizenship is a requirement.
  • Telus International — Telus International (previously named Smart Crowd) is part of Lionbridge, which provides registered workers with a pool of available microtasks – many of which involve data entry. You work when you want and as much as you want. Pay rates vary and are advertised as competitive and corresponding to your productivity. You can register on the site for free. The company evaluates you and then matches you with tasks that fit your skills. Payment is issued once a month.
  • SigTrack — SigTrack works with independent contractors to record whether petition signers are voters or to process voter registration and other forms. Because this work revolves around the voting petition season, the company only hires at certain times. Pay is per work unit based on accuracy, and you must maintain at least 98% accuracy to satisfy your contract and peer review others’ work. Pay is via PayPal. Jobs are only available to U.S. citizens, and you’ll be required to join a short Skype call during the interview process to establish your identity. Equipment requirements are pretty standard, but note that the company requires dual monitors.
  • Microworkers — Microworkers, as the name implies, is another microtask job board. It offers a variety of tasks, and some include data entry. Some of the jobs it offers pay better than similar jobs on other microtask sites. The site also shows you a percentage for each job that demonstrates how often that job poster has approved the work of previous workers. You’re only paid for approved work, so that’s useful! Payment for completed jobs goes directly to your PayPal account once you hit a $10 payout threshold. Be vigilant against scam jobs offered through Microworkers.
  • Amazon mTurk — Amazon Mechanical Turk is the lion of microtask sites, and you can find data entry work among its thousands of available tasks. Once you register with the site, you can select HITs (human intelligence tasks) that sound interesting to you; sometimes, you must complete a qualifier to land the task. You’re only paid if your work is accepted. Some shady tasks are listed on mTurk , so be careful and don’t pick up any HITs that feel wrong. Payment is made via Amazon gift cards or through bank deposit.
  • Working Solutions — Working Solutions periodically offers work that involves data entry. You’ll need to fill out an online application and follow it up by taking some assessments. The company will contact you afterward with acceptance or rejection – the website says this step can take up to two weeks. Once you’re an agent, you’ll have the opportunity to review and apply for programs you think match your skills. Each program pays differently, and payment is made via direct deposit or mailed check.
  • Appen — This company is best known for its search engine evaluator jobs , but it also offers a variety of microtask positions that may involve data entry or data collecting. Many jobs are short-term and project-based. The pay might not be much, but it’s a little extra spending money.
  • Lionbridge — This is another company known for evaluator and assessor jobs, but it also offers a variety of other small tasks. One such task that may fit into the field we’re talking about is annotation. In some of these roles, you are simply labeling images. In other annotation roles, you will help improve their artificial intelligence software. Appen and Lionbridge are both adding to their remote roles frequently. Even if you don’t see something of interest now, check back later.
  • I also highly recommend checking data entry jobs on  FlexJobs . Though there is a fee to use, they research all of their job leads for legitimacy, so your job search is guaranteed scam-free!

There Are Great Work-From-Home Alternatives to Data Entry Work

Think about the things that might draw you to data entry:

  • You don’t need much training.
  • You don’t have to have any particular background.
  • The work is widely available, and it pays (even if data entry doesn’t pay much)
  • The work is flexible. You can pick and choose if you want to work full-time or part-time and can work at an office or focus on remote work.
  • You don’t have to start up a business to do data entry. (Or maybe you like the idea of starting up a business, but it seems really intimidating!)

The great news is that there are viable alternatives that fit most if not all of these criteria, and the pay is substantially better than data entry. They might require a bit of brainpower, and the faster you can type, the better you’ll do – but neither of these should be hurdles big enough to stop you from pursuing your work-at-home dreams.

These are some of the best alternatives to data entry for when you want to work from home:

Transcription

When I think about an alternative to doing data entry from home, transcription is the first thing that comes to mind. I’ve written a lot about transcription because it’s such a great way to get started in a remote job.

A transcription job doesn’t require any special training. It can be as simple as stopping and starting a recording and typing up what you hear – although there are software programs that make this process much more efficient. Check out these resources to land transcription work .

Transcription doesn’t require a lot of technical skill – you’re essentially just typing what you hear.

Every now and then, you may need a critical ear if what’s going on sounds garbled, and the better you’re able to decipher it, the better your transcriptions will be. But it’s not usually too challenging, and there’s a transcript “code” you can include in any section that’s too garbled to understand.

Email and Chat Customer Service

While you might not be jumping up and down at the idea of doing customer service online , take a closer look. Some customer service jobs are over the phone, but among trending jobs, there are many new opportunities to handle customer service via email and the online chat function of a company’s website.

You can work for a customer service organization that businesses hire, you can work directly for a business doing its customer service, or you can even start your own freelance business as a customer service pro and offer your services that way.

The following companies typically have work-at-home chat and email jobs on a regular basis:

  • Amazon (seasonal)
  • Sedgwick CMS
  • Support.com
  • Sutherland (occasionally has non-phone openings)
  • Sykes (occasionally has chat openings)
  • The Chat Shop

Freelance writing is a great way to earn money on the side, and it’s one of the most lucrative opportunities out there if you can work your way into some of the highly specialized copywriting niches.

But even if you don’t burrow down into copywriting, freelance writing is definitely worth a look. If you’re able to type fast, you should be able to put together a decent blog post in about an hour (once you get the hang of it, which typically doesn’t take very long).

If you charge a client $50 for that blog post (which is a pretty typical beginner or advanced beginner rate), you’ve just made $50 for an hour’s worth of work. And the best part is that many businesses will want to hire a writer for recurring work, so it’s not like you have to find a new client every time you want an assignment.

Working as a freelancer is definitely not for everyone, but it’s not as scary as a lot of people think it is. I love freelance writing, and I’d encourage you to take a closer look before you decide it’s not for you.

A remote data entry job may not make you big money, but legitimate opportunities can keep you earning funds while looking for a home job that pays better.

Now that you know what you need and where to look for legit jobs have at it! And don’t forget to drop me a note on how you do – or any valid data entry jobs I’ve not mentioned here.
