What are your skills?

There are two types of skills: hard skills and soft skills .

Hard skills are teachable and you can easily measure your progress in them. A good example is knowing how to use Excel or learning how to operate a cash register.

Soft skills are innate traits we have that make us good at some things. Those could be social skills, creativity, good memory, attention to detail, or discipline.

Make a list of your hard and soft skills by looking back on your life and identifying those moments where your unique abilities let you shine.

You can use the list at the top to help you compile your list of skills.

How to identify your skills

Nearly everybody has something they're better at than other people. No, this is not one of those "everybody is special" statements.

Look back on your life and make a list of those things that set you apart from others. What are the things that made you special ? The things that made people say "wow". What have you excelled at in your career?

What were you good at school?

Even people who had poor grades in school had a favorite class where they did better than expected.

What classes did you excel in ? Maybe it was Spanish, or maybe it was computer science. Maybe you had a liking to history or mathematics. Make that list and keep going.

What do people compliment you on?

When you're good at something, you will get compliments from other people. Looking back on your life, what are the things people most often praise about you ?

Is it your artistic ability? Your math skills? Are you a human calculator? Maybe you have a good fashion sense.

Either way, keep making your list bigger. We will analyze it later on.

What are your passions?

People say that skills are more important than passions. "Passion doesn't pay the bills" they say. And they're not wrong.

Some have life goals they're passionate about but will never get them anywhere. Those goals and dreams won't pay them for their effort.

But identifying your passions can often help you understand what you're good at. Make a list of the things you are truly passionate about.

These should be the things that you would work on, even if you don't get paid to do them. It could be a hobby or a childhood dream of yours, like being a singer.

Those passions will often hide things you are truly good at. Add those things to the list of your skills and keep going.

Ask your family and friends

Ask around: "what do you think I'm good at?".

People who know you for a long time know you very well. Ask your friends, family, people at work . You can even ask your boss if you want to.

You'll be surprised by the answers. We are often blind to ourselves and require external feedback to help us understand reality.

What are your hobbies?

You might not be paid to do woodwork, but if you do it as a hobby, there's a reason for it: you're probably good at it .

If you write a blog, you might be good at communication and writing. If you like to solve sudokus, you might have good mathematical skills.

When we engage in a hobby, we often do it to express our abilities. Add those skills to your list of skills and keep going.

Take a personality/assessment test

Assessment tests are tests you can take to understand more about your personality and your cognitive skills. Things like your verbal intelligence, abstract thinking ability, or logical thinking.

Taking those tests can help you understand what you're good at. If you know you're better with abstract thinking, then maybe you should get an engineering job?

Now that you have a master list of skills and strengths, it's time to put them into categories.

How often do we spend our lives fighting our weaknesses rather than focusing on our strengths?

Once you know what you're good at, you can shift your career towards an area you excel in rather than having a disappointing career that won't ever get you anywhere.

Mention your skills on your resume and job interviews

When you have a good idea of your skills, ‌mention them not only on your resume but also when taking part in job interviews.

A teenager in Connecticut has come to be in high demand as an interior decorator and is regarded as something of a “rising star,” according to a profile in the Times’s Home and Garden section. What are your talents and skills? What products or services might you be able to provide, either free of charge, or for a fee?

The article “Sam Allen, Teenage Decorator” by Steven Kurutz looks at the 19-year-old’s career and how he got his start:

Mr. Allen landed his first real client two years ago, when his father, Lloyd, who runs a farmstand in Westport, overheard a customer saying she wanted to turn a nanny suite into a playroom for her daughters. “I go over, meet the woman, she tells me her wants and needs, and I tell her my vision,” Mr. Allen recalled. “I was hired on the spot.” He turned the nanny’s drab kitchenette into a candy station with a hot-pink mini-fridge, he said, and added bunk beds and a zebra-stripe rug. By charging less than other designers (his initial rate was $20 an hour, though he now charges $100) and posting photos of his work on Facebook, Mr. Allen secured more jobs. In the beginning, most of them involved decorating children’s rooms.

I am good at graphic design and motion design. I am very passionate about this and noticed I was good at it when I was 12. I want to be an animator some day.

I am good at the computer. I first realized this when I was in third grade. I use my talents to make PowerPoint’s for school stuff and help the teachers out when I can. I think that my friends respect my ability because they always ask me to help them.

I think I would have to say I am good at is basketball. I have played sience I was 6 and it has been my passion ever sience. Basketball has always took a place in my heart and never left. When ever I am on the court, I feel like I’m in my own world and it’s just amazing. The reson I’m good at is tho, is because when I play, I always strive the extra mile, and good for me, is never good enough.

I really don’t know in what I’m good at yet, I like to do a lot of things and one of them can be sewing. I am really passionate about what I do and i know I’m really good at it too.

Im good at drawing and socializing I first relized it when I started drawing when I was almost 8 I think and I realized that im good at socializing when people tell me I talk alot. I used my drawing skill for my enjoyment and socializing skills help me meet new people and make new friends. My peers have told me im good at both of them and that I do them very often. Im passionate about them because I enjoy them alot and it helps me think. If I put them to use I could draw portraits of people or I can help talk and debate with my socializing skills.

In my opinion, I am good at playing the guitar. I think this because when i started playing, it came natural to me. I learned how to play my first song within a week of playing. I am passionate about the guitar because I think that it is one of the most fun instruments to play and not many people can play it. I think that it is a great skill to have and is a fun one at that!

I am good at a few different things but, I would like to overall talk about how I’m good at sports. I first realized that I was good at sports when my friends and coaches told me I was good. I am very passionate about the sports i play and I’m very competitive and when I’m playing sports I don’t think about anything else.

I think one of the things I’m good at is being very organized and clean. I realized this when I used to share a room with my sister I couldn’t sleep until my room was spotless and clean. I use my skills I guess you would say, to keep my room clean. My mom is happy because she doesn’t have to worry about my room or the house being messy most of the time because I’m home most of the time. I like being organized because it makes me and my house not look like a mess. Well, if I really wanted to, I could make a cleaning business.

I am a extremely good game rand I realized this when i got my first xbox and started to play several diffrent types of games.sometimes I just use these talents to play some tournaments or to just simply have fun.I wouldnt say im really passionate about my skills but I do like how im good at alot of games.My friends did not really react to it nor did my parents.

I’m good at a lot of things (with the “a lot” italicized). I play 4 instruments very well. I am the best golfer in my school and have excelled in math. I also started swimming recently and am very good at it too. I realized these talents around the time between 6th and 7th grade. I am very passionate of my talents and my peers encourages me to do what I want and use my talents everyday.

I am an avid musician. I started taking piano, violin lessons since I was five years old or so but I learned to play guitar by myself as I found the lesson by experts useless. I am exuberant most when I play Taylor Swift’s songs both on piano and guitar in my leisure time.

Moreover, I am an ardent artist as well. When I joined drama club, I realized that I was truly passionate about performing whether it is in front of the class or on the stage. I love every aspects relating to performing from writing the play to participating in the musicals although it means more responsibility, dedication and less hanging out, less TV.

To put my skills in service of others, my friends and I are making a plan to organize Christmas party for the orphans and disadvantaged children. We will be playing music, performing a short play relating to Christmas and organizing some activities and games for the children.

I have become really good at math. I use to have trouble with math, I could never understand what to do, now though I can do really complicated problems with extreme ease.

I think I’m good at procrastinating. I found out I was good at this because of school. I use them to forget about homework and do it at the last minute or not at all. They have been angry. I am very passionate about it. No, I cannot use this skill to help others.

I am good with cars because they are my passion. I can name any car that drives by me on the road. I can also build cars from the ground up, I know all about engines, paint, and body work.

the one thing im good at is makeing friends i am very socale person.i first relized this in first grade whe i became friends with eveyone in my class.

I feel that I am great at soccer. I have played the sport ever since I was five years old and have played it every year of my life. I am 18 years old right now and continue to play. I played in the senior all-star game this year and even ended making first team. I am hoping to play club soccer at college next year. I think what makes me really good at the sport though is that I played it and excelled in it within a football-dominated community. It’s not an easy thing to do. The town I come from is football crazy. Just about everyone here has played or is playing football. Every single one of my friends that plays a fall sport plays football. I am the one of the very few kids who hasn’t played a single year of football and instead has played soccer every single year of his life. The community I live in and the surrounding communities offer very little for soccer players. I don’t get a lot of recognition for what I do and it really bothers me because a great athlete who plays football will receive tons of recognition and respect while I don’t receive nearly the same amount of recognition and respect even though I am just as good of an athlete as they are. I think that I am great at soccer because I have played it for as long as I have and have gotten extremely good at it with little support. It’s one of those things that not many people can do.

I try to find something im really good at but i think im just to young to find my true calling.

What I am good at. I was fighting Mixed Martial Arts for 3 years but i recently had to stop due to my knees.

I am good at many things. One thing that I am good at is organizing events. Last year I was in a club that wanted to do fund raising. I knew exactly what we were going to do. When we had the event It was terrific and we made alot of money.

I am good at softball. I realize that i was good at this sport is when i was playing tee ball. How i realized that was when my coach told me that i could hurt someone really bad with my throw. Which made me sad but then he said i have a strong throw and i could throw to first base from the outfield. I use this skill when i am playing with my friends or when the season begins each spring, winter and winter clinics.

I am good at football, basketball, baseball, video games, and making friends.

I am good at playing video games reading books and runing out side with my friends.

Im good at a few weird thing. i like to be unique so i do not try the things other people do. Im good at balancing on my head. im good at burping really loud. I dont know what else to say. so yeah.

Consider what your “anchoring belief” is–the way I define an “anchoring belief”: a belief you hold about yourself and your abilities that you know with certainty to be true. For example: let’s say that you believe you are good at writing. You know this, without a shadow of a doubt, because you’ve written several articles in the past that have received lots of positive attention from people in your life, been featured in a publication, or maybe they just conveyed exactly what you were thinking and what message you wanted to get across that you felt so proud of them. 3. Extracurricular Activity

Many schools ask you to describe an extracurricular activity that is particularly meaningful for you. While community essays can have slightly different focuses, they all share the goal of learning about where you come from. A supplemental essay prompt might ask you to share more about your background via a group you are part of. This is likely a community essay. In this article, we will share several community essay examples. Specifically, we will highlight Princeton essay examples and Columbia essays examples. Let’s look at these two colleges’ essay prompts. 

The first Princeton supplemental essay prompt is a part of our college community essay examples and our cultural diversity essay examples. Here is the prompt:

Princeton Community Essay Prompt #1: Cultural Diversity Essay and College Community Essay Examples

Princeton values community and encourages students, faculty, staff and leadership to engage in respectful conversations that can expand their perspectives and challenge their ideas and beliefs. as a prospective member of this community, reflect on how your lived experiences will impact the conversations you will have in the classroom, the dining hall or other campus spaces. what lessons have you learned in life thus far what will your classmates learn from you in short, how has your lived experience shaped you  (please respond in 500 words or fewer.).

In this cultural diversity essay prompt, Princeton wants to know about your lived experiences. By this, they refer to any experiences that have shaped you profoundly. A lived experience can be a specific event, such as experiencing a car crash or winning an award. Or, it could be a set of experiences that resulted from life circumstances, such as being a first-generation college student or having taken a gap year .

This essay prompt will also lead to college community essay examples. Indeed Princeton wants to read about your lived experiences and how they impacted you. But, they also want to know how you will bring those lessons to the Princeton community, should you enroll . Also, note that this prompt mentions challenging ideas and beliefs via conversation. As you respond, look for ways to highlight how you have engaged in fruitful dialogue and how you would do so at Princeton.

To answer this prompt effectively, share specific examples. Additionally, be sure to answer all parts of the prompt. 

Princeton has a second supplemental essay prompt that focuses on how you engage with your community outside of the classroom. The prompt is as follows: 

Princeton Community Essay Prompt #2: Civic Engagement

Princeton has a longstanding commitment to understanding our responsibility to society through service and civic engagement. how does your own story intersect with these ideals (250 words or fewer) .

To answer this prompt well, you must highlight specific examples of how you have positively impacted your community. As a starting point, consider which of your communities you have most engaged with. How have you done so and what results did you have?

The Columbia Community Essay Prompt is another of our college community essay examples. It is a cultural diversity essay, as well. Here is the prompt: 

Columbia Community Essay Prompt: A Cultural Diversity Essay

A hallmark of the columbia experience is being able to learn and thrive in an equitable and inclusive community with a wide range of perspectives. tell us about an aspect of your own perspective, viewpoint or lived experience that is important to you, and describe how it has shaped the way you would learn from and contribute to columbia’s diverse and collaborative community. (150 words or fewer).

While this prompt is similar to Princeton’s, it also references perspectives and viewpoints. In doing so, the prompt opens you up to share opinions or values that are important to you. You might consider highlighting values in your family or community that you either hold close or disagree with. 

Note that Columbia also highlights the word “collaborative” in this prompt. This indicates that your cultural diversity essay should also show how you collaborate with others.

Which schools require a community essay?

In addition to Princeton and Columbia, many other schools have community essays as part of their college application requirements. Here are some other examples of community essay prompts:

In this UNC-Chapel Hill prompt , you must describe a specific example of how you made an impact on a community. The prompt reads:

The University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill: A Community Service Essay Prompt

Discuss one of your personal qualities and share a story, anecdote, or memory of how it helped you make a positive impact on a community. this could be your current community or another community you have engaged. (250-word limit).

In responding, be sure to highlight what community you are referencing, the specific impact you made, and what personal quality helped you do so.

This prompt from UMichigan is a describe a community you belong to essay example, as well as a cultural diversity essay:

The University of Michigan: Describe a Community You Belong to Essay Example

Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it. (required for all applicants. 1,500 character limit.).

In addition to describing the community, make sure to share how you engage with it and what it has taught you. Remember that community is a broad term. So, for this prompt you can respond with any type of community in mind, whether physical or cultural. Duke University: Cultural Diversity Essay Prompts

Duke offers students five supplemental prompts to choose from, of which they can reply to two. Of these supplemental prompts, four are examples of cultural diversity essays:

1. We believe a wide range of viewpoints, beliefs, and lived experiences are essential to maintaining Duke as a vibrant and meaningful living and learning community. Feel free to share with us anything in this context that might help us better understand you and what you might bring to our community.

2. we believe there is benefit in sharing or questioning our beliefs or values; who do you agree with on the big important things, or who do you have your most interesting disagreements with what are you agreeing or disagreeing about, 3. duke’s commitment to inclusion and belonging includes sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. feel free to share with us more about how your identity in this context has meaning for you as an individual or as a member of a community., 4. we recognize that not fully “fitting in” a community or place can sometimes be difficult. duke values the effort, resilience, and independence that may require. feel free to share with us circumstances where something about you is different and how that’s influenced your experiences or identity..

Each of these prompts is a slightly different type of cultural diversity essay, from sharing a range of opinions to not fitting in within a community. Choose the essay prompts that most resonate with you. And share specific examples that bring your cultural diversity essay to life.

In this Yale University supplemental prompt , you must choose a community that you feel connected to and describe why it is meaningful. Here’s the prompt:

Yale University: Describe a Community You Belong to Essay Example

Reflect on your membership in a community to which you feel connected. why is this community meaningful to you you may define community however you like. (400-word limit).

When responding, be sure to highlight what you have learned or how you have grown from this community. In contrast to a describe the community you live in essay, this essay can be about any community, near or far, that resonates with you. Indeed, the prompt gives you plenty of leeway in what you consider community.

I have spent most of my life living in a 41% minority town of 1.8 square miles called Highland Park, NJ. This typically overlooked town has introduced me to a diverse array of people, and it has been the main influence on my life experiences and core values.

In the face of distinct cultures and customs, we forge a single identity as Highland Parkers and come together to organize large community events. The most prevalent example is our highly touted annual Memorial Day parade, where we join together with neighboring New Brunswick to invite military service members, family members of our fallen war heroes, our legislative and congressional representatives, and our townspeople. Moreover, as our high school band’s vice president, I help organize and lead our ensemble into these performances with a positive and uplifting spirit. We communicate with the town government and arrange the performances every year to perform at the parade. The parade is an example of many of our large community events that serve as a unifying force for our diverse community, reminding us that we are fundamentally connected as one cohesive group, despite our differences. 

As someone deeply interested in historical and political matters, I am well aware of the consequences that arise from dictatorial protocols that limit the freedom of speech and diversity of voices. From my experiences debating in Model UN conferences, I have grown accustomed to being able to present viewpoints from both sides of the argument, and I have learned to incorporate and respect the viewpoints of all sides of an issue before making up my own mind. For example, in a Model Congress debate, I found myself advocating for the interests of a state heavily reliant on traditional fossil fuels. While researching and articulating that perspective, I gained insights into the economic challenges faced by the states that are reliant on these resources. This experience not only broadened my understanding of the complexities surrounding environmental policies but also highlighted the necessity of considering diverse viewpoints for comprehensive decision-making. 

My background and experiences have fostered in me a profound appreciation for the value of diversity, inclusivity, and the pursuit of knowledge. At Princeton University, I will seek to contribute as an active participant in the community, actively provide unique perspectives and insights, and respect and learn from others’ perspectives even if there are disagreements. I wish to partake in student government, which has like-minded peers who want to make a substantive impact, and also participate in service programs like the Civic Leadership Council. Also, I hope to increase my impact from the leadership positions I currently hold on the Red Cross club and teen mayoral advisory council using the platforms in Princeton. I look forward to making a positive impact on both the campus and the broader community. 

Why This Cultural Diversity Essay Worked

My first experience with the Red Cross was when my older sister was desperately trying to recruit people to join the club during the harsh COVID year. Things were so bad for the club that I, as a freshman, ran for the position of treasurer unopposed. My first blood drive experience was marked by masks, social distancing, and low turnout among blood donors. Even many donors who showed up ended up being turned away due to health-related issues. Needless to say, it was not the greatest first high school service experience, and I admittedly started to doubt if the time I spent on this front was worth it. 

However, as we returned in person, things quickly turned around. As the vice president of the club, I helped recruit more than twice the club membership compared to the previous year, and our blood drives started to regain momentum; our blood targets have been exceeded every time since. Organizing and participating in blood drives has become a passion. It’s fulfilling, especially when I personally donate, to know that I’m actively serving the community and saving lives. I have realized that, despite my relatively young age, I am capable of making an impact through public service. I plan to continue my commitment to the Red Cross’s adult program and participate in service programs like Community Action at Princeton to serve the Princeton community and abroad.

Why This Essay Worked

The Columbia essay prompt only allows for a 150-word response. This could pose a challenge for many students. What makes this essay among the Columbia essays examples that worked is how succinctly it completely answers the prompt. 

The response begins by hooking the reader with a relevant detail of the student’s community. Then, the student shares how this community shaped them by influencing their values of diversity and inclusion. Finally, the student shares how they would engage with a Columbia organization that also supports diverse viewpoints. Though short and sweet, this response clearly answers all parts of the Columbia prompt. 

More Community Essay Examples

The final of our community essay examples is a community service essay. Let’s look at how student framed their service experience:

“I don’t believe that’s the best way to do this.” 

The moment I thought this the first time I volunteered at my local soup kitchen was one that resulted in a drastic change. When I was informed of the way the food was being served to the public, the initial excitement that I had felt diminished. We were told that the plates would be served before anyone arrived and would remain in an area where people could pick it up and seat themselves. I felt that this method was impersonal and inconsiderate, and disappointment washed over me. 

I turned to the people that were around me and discovered that they shared the same disapproval I felt. When we agreed that a change must be made, we exchanged ideas on how to present this to the woman in charge of the program. I suggested that we should serve each person one-by-one, and only give them the food if they wanted to/could eat it. They suggested multiple ideas, including that we should offer to seat them, hold their plates for them, continue to check in on them, and dispose of their plates once they finish their meal. We believed that this way would genuinely make them feel better and would allow us to get to know some of them personally. A simple smile and conversation could be enough to improve their day. 

From this day on, the way in which the local soup kitchen serves our community has changed dramatically. This experience taught me the importance of speaking up for what you believe in. In a group setting, it is likely that there will be others who share the same end goal and are willing to contribute different ideas to achieve the goal. These different perspectives can allow you to see situations in ways that you previously hadn’t, and can result in better outcomes. It also showed me the importance of leadership.

If I had never spoken up about the way the food was being served, a change might have never happened. When you work in the group, the end goal may not be for the benefit of anyone in the group, but for others who are in need. This experience also showed me the beauty in doing good for others and making others happy, even through small things such as serving them food to their liking.

In this community service essay, the student shares their experience volunteering at a soup kitchen. Volunteering at a soup kitchen is not necessarily unique in the list of extracurricular activities for college applications. However, the student highlights several aspects of the experience that make it meaningful to them. 

To start, the student shares their experience challenging the way that food was served. The student suggested that food be served directly to attendees in order to better connect with community members. Through this experience, the student learns about leadership and working with others to achieve a common goal. This specific example demonstrates the student’s collaborative values and compassionate way of thinking, both of which are great attributes to highlight in college applications.

How To Write A Community Essay

As we saw in the community essay examples, there are several hallmarks of college essays that worked. To write a good community essay, whether it be a community service essay, a cultural diversity essay, or a describe the community you live in essay, you must start by understanding the prompt. Once you have carefully read through the prompt, brainstorm examples from your own life that relate to it. Sharing specific details and examples will make your response stronger and more unique. 

Additionally, showcase how you grew throughout your response. In each of the community essay examples we shared, the student discussed a skill or perspective they developed through their experiences. Finally, connect your response to the school you are applying to. If you are writing a cultural diversity essay, for example, demonstrate how you would contribute to the cultural diversity at that school, both inside the classroom and in your extracurricular activities for college.  

Topics To Avoid In Your Community Essay

When writing community essays, there is technically no topic that you cannot discuss. However, how you discuss certain topics is important. 

For example, in a community service essay, it is important to not come off as a savior of a community with less privilege than yourself. Similarly, if you are writing a describe the community you live in essay or a cultural diversity essay, you will want to avoid stereotyping any community. Speaking from your own personal experience as a member of a community is fine. However, generalizing your experience to the community at large can come across as insensitive to that community’s diversity. To avoid these pitfalls, have a variety of people read your community essay examples and look for these dynamics.

Introduction

People are rarely or never grateful for life itself but for the things it offers. Some pursue money and financial stability. Others are fortunate to have a loving family and numerous friends. People praise life for giving them tangible and intangible benefits. They curse life for difficulties and failures. Life for me is a continuous source of unbelievable impressions. Despite numerous difficulties and failures I cannot stop thanking life for life itself and everything I have and can have in the future. I realize that successes and failures create a reasonable life balance and teach us good moral lessons. The four things I am grateful for are my parents, friends, fate, and my green card – they never betray me and support me on my way to personal and professional achievements.

The most valuable thing I am grateful for in this life is my parents. Needless to say, these are the people who gave me life. More importantly, these are the people who gave me a chance to achieve something in life. These are the people who are the first to praise and recognize my triumphs and to support me in difficult times. My parents are proud of me and teach me to be proud of myself. I can never thank enough to my parents for making me who I am today. I feel proud for being their daughter. They make my life self-fulfilling and full. Parents never betray; that is why I am grateful for them.

People are lucky to have strong and reliable friends, and I am grateful for a chance and opportunity to have many friends. They are with me whatever my goals and ambitions are. They are the first after my parents to support me through difficulties. I am grateful for friends because friends teach me a good moral lesson: they teach me supportiveness, virtue, openness, and tolerance. They teach me how to establish and maintain relations with people. They prove that a brilliant career and loving parents cannot suffice to make a loyal friend. To have at least one loyal friend, one needs kindness, patience, openness, and inner virtue. These serve the glue which ties people together and does not let them go even under the pressure of the most difficult circumstances.

I am grateful for fate and my green card. I am grateful for fate because it guides me and does not let me fall. As long as I can remember myself, fate was always merciful to me. I received a good education, had a decent job, and traveled a lot. Fate always saved me from big troubles and painful failures. At times I realized that I could no longer control my life and circumstances and that some mysterious power controlled my actions and thoughts. However, with my fate’s guidance I could always take the best decision. I never felt like a puppet at the end of its string – rather, fate always gave and gives me a strong hint at how to manage my life in the best way. To some extent, I owe my green card to my fate. I am Bulgarian. I won the card in the lottery. My green card opens unlimited growth and development opportunities to me. It has always been a dream to live in the United States. With my green card, I feel that I can achieve unbelievable professional and personal highs. I know that my fate gives me another chance to succeed in this life – a chance, which I will never dare to waste.

People can love or hate life, but they are almost often grateful for things, which they have in their lives. The four things I am grateful for are my parents, my friends, fate, and my green card. Parents are the first to support me in good and bad times. Friends teach me a good moral lesson of what it takes to be virtuous, supportive, open, and patient with others. Fate guides me and leads me to the best decisions. Finally, my green card opens the gateway to unlimited growth opportunities. Here's the secret to writing your "Why This Major?" essays:

They're not really asking "Why this major?" but "Why you and this major?"

Just like with your Why This College essays, you need to show that you're a perfect match for the program you're applying to through specific examples , ideas , and connections to the school's offerings .

Even if you're applying undecided or undeclared , which is common for students to do, admissions officers ask this question because they want to know these 3 things:

  • Do you have an idea about what you want your future to look like (what you want to study, possible career, etc.), and will our school help you fulfill that vision?
  • Do you have what it takes to be a successful student within your desired major or program?
  • How genuinely interested are you in this area of study? Or are you choosing it for superficial reasons (like money)?

What if you're undecided?

Even if you're undecided, you should have some idea about possible fields you're interested in.

It's impossible for you to have lived 17 or 18 years and not picked up some sort of interest that you could study in college.

After all, why are you applying to colleges in the first place? Probably to pursue a more in-depth education in a particular area.

So if you're applying undecided, you'll need to still talk about potential areas you're interested in, even if you aren't totally committed to them yet.

I often see students write generic remarks like...

How do you go deeper? Try writing about specifics of the field.

Use some geeky or technical language . Instead of saying "biology," you could write about "molecular biology and its impact on genetic engineering."

Tip #2. Ask yourself questions at the heart of the area of study.

Tip #4. What will this school in particular offer to help you study this field better than other schools?

All colleges offer pretty much the same selection of majors and programs, so what is unique about this school's approach?

Again, you'll need to do some thinking and research.

Tip #5. Show how you've already explored the field.

Think about your classes, but more importantly, think about the ways you've gone beyond the classroom.

Their phrasing, although verbose in some places, comes across genuine because the author walks you through how they learned about the school, what they're looking for in a school, and why the school would offer those specific things. Phrases like "I didn't know if I could honestly see myself studying that" are conversational and natural-sounding, which help create a sincere tone.

By referencing specific programs, like "Penn in Washington" as well as various minors and concentrations, it is clear this student has done their research about the school. One of the most important aspects for a "Why Us" essay is to find specific and unique opportunities and name them in your essay. These could be things like specific professors and their work, campus and its location, interesting classes, unique internship/study-abroad/job programs, special events, and many more. The key is referencing things that are entirely unique to the school and not many other schools too. Avoid broad terms like "renowned faculty" or "interdisciplinary studies" because virtually all colleges offer things like this, and these are some of the most over-used and artificial reasons used in "Why Us" essays.

This essay has many moments of repetition that are unnecessary. In general, avoid repeating your ideas and when editing, ask yourself of each sentence: does this add something distinctly new and important to my essay? There are two common mistakes that often create repetition: prefacing your ideas and summarizing your ideas. Unlike academic writing, you don't need to "prepare" the reader for what you're going to say, and you don't need to conclude it with a summary. By doing so, you only create unnecessary repetition and take up words which could otherwise be used to include new specific details or ideas.

This essay spends nearly half of its words explaining the "interdisciplinary" opportunities at UPenn. However, this reason is quite superficial and not at all unique to Penn, as almost all colleges offer some sort of interdisciplinary study (i.e. combining your interests or studying multiple fields). Talking about "interdisciplinary study" is one of the most common reasons students use in their "Why Us" essay, and it often comes across as generic and unoriginal. Instead, look for offerings that no other (or very few other) schools provide. Narrow down your reasons "why" to make them more specific to the school, even if they are smaller scale. You can mention things like "interdisciplinary studies" or "diverse student body" briefly as a reason why, but don't make them one of your primary reasons why, unless you have something particularly unique about it.

I will join the Academy for Model Aeronautics and share my passion for designing drones, while taking fascinating courses such as “Taboo Markets” and “Banality of Evil”, while simultaneously working on an engineering project that improves real people’s lives in “Engineering Design”. By joining the Duke Robotics Club, I can expand upon my love for robotics, and I hope to write for the Duke Engineering magazine, as well as join the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. By drawing from this diverse range of educational experiences, I can become a leader in creating a better future.

13. "Why Neuroscience?" University of Southern California (USC) Essay Example

I had never considered traveling across the country to pursue an education. In fact, living in Pittsburgh all of my life and growing up with people who are so adamant about staying put, forced me to believe that I too had to box myself into this small, yet evolving city. However, now I can confidently tell my friends and family that I want to travel to California for college (and ignore their odd looks).

What strikes me most about USC is its ability to maintain uniformity despite its diverse student body--in interests, ethnicity, and opinion. There are not many schools where I could be best friends with filmmakers, artists, photographers, chemists, potential CEOs, and writers. Although all of these people are spread across different schools, they still seem to maintain a cultural unity. Being surrounded by such a distinct trojan pride combined with the ambitious atmosphere would be both inspiring and propulsive.

At USC, I would not have to confine to merely one of my interests. I have always had aspirations of becoming a doctor and pursuing neuroscience, but have never felt comfortable ignoring the humanities. As a Trojan, I could pursue research at the Dana and David Dornsife Cognitive Neuroscience Imaging Center or even take part in PIBBS, while also honing my writing skills through the intricate Writing Program.

Much like the students, my interests could somehow be molded into a diverse uniformity, and I could prove my fellow Pittsburghers that perhaps they need to move around more.

14. "Why Journalism?" Ithaca College Essay Example

Prompt: Please tell us why you selected this specific academic program and what other academic programs interest you. (10-200 words)

Recording devices have been banned from the courtroom of the Supreme Court Building since 1946. Therefore, when the Court makes a landmark decision, interns must hand-deliver paper copies of the ruling to news organizations.

The interns often pair running shoes with their business attire, for the quarter-mile sprint from the Court building to the area where networks ​await.

When I first saw photographs of “The Running of the Interns”, I wanted nothing more than to ​be​ one of those people. I wanted to feel my running shoes beating against the sidewalks, to feel sweat staining my suit.

Why did this tradition attract me to journalism? Because it reminded me that the news is a race, a constantly-changing collection of stories shaping social and political development.

The opportunity to contribute to that collection is why, beyond Ithaca’s journalism program, I’m also interested in the College’s minors in Politics and Writing.

I think all of this desire to be part of a story defines what it means to be a journalist, a writer: When I become a journalism major at Ithaca College, and, later, perhaps a running intern, I get to be a contender in the race to change the world.

15. "Why Economics and Political Science?" University of Michigan Essay Example

In my junior year microeconomics class, my teacher extensively explored the ways in which people from different socioeconomic classes were affected by our economic system. I was frustrated by the ways our country forces those living in poverty to spend the little money they have on taxable goods. I began to empathize with them. How can people pull themselves out of poverty if their government seems to be working against them? More than anything, I was frustrated that I felt powerless to help them in any way.

Those lessons inspired and motivated me. I had always looked at economics as nothing more than an analysis of business models and resource allocation. I began to see it as a way to fix fundamental problems in our society, from examining the effects of healthcare expansion on crime and poverty rates to studying how shifts in our political climate affect how our country’s financial process will change. I now see economics as a way to help those in need in my country and throughout the world.

I volunteered after school for Representative Dingell and had the opportunity to attend numerous events hosted by the Ford School. Again and again, I was impressed by the extent of the Ford School’s student involvement in critical issues. Through my work with the Congresswoman, I was able to gain a greater understanding of how different groups of people were affected by shifts in political and economic priorities. My goal is to become a civil rights attorney or study economics as a way to promote sustainable growth in developing nations.

I want to begin my studies at the University of Michigan in LSA to gain a foundation in economics and political science-related courses. After my first year, I hope to gain admission to the Ford School. The connections that LSA and Ford have to Poverty Solutions solidified by interest in the University of Michigan. If I attended these schools as an undergraduate student, I would be able to assist with research on the causes and ramifications of poverty. Professor Michael Barr’s research on policy initiatives and our financial system is fascinating from the perspective of a prospective economics major. At the University of Michigan, I would be able to join teams of renowned researchers working toward the betterment of our society and our world.

The range of schools working in connection with Poverty Solutions is evidence of the University’s devotion to civic engagement. I would be able to participate in groundbreaking research regarding issues I am interested in; I would have the ability to study poverty and ways to stunt or alleviate its effects in other countries. As someone hoping to pursue a career in public service, it is truly incredible to have the opportunity to join a research community specifically geared toward solving problems I am passionate about solving.

I want to join the University of Michigan’s legacy of innovators. I want to be part of the LSA community, studying economics and political science. I want to attend the Ford School and understand how policy in America and abroad has an effect on global poverty. I want to be involved with the Poverty Solutions Initiative, conducting groundbreaking research on the ways we can reform our financial system to better serve the lower and middle classes.

16. "Why English Major?" Rice University Essay Example

Prompt: Please explain why you wish to study in the academic areas you selected above. (150 words max)

It's an understatement to label me as an English geek; I am that kid who squeals in excitement in English class when given a new essay assignment while others may groan in exasperation. I understand why some may be a bit anxious when preparing to turn in an essay for evaluation; you could bring an essay to two different English teachers and receive two different grades on it. This subjectivity is why some folks may prefer subjects such as mathematics in which the right answer is not debatable. However, its subjectivity is exactly what captivates me. I enjoy reasoning my opinions of arguments and the intentions of authors.

I was really happy when I learned I didn't have to major in Criminal Justice or Political Science to be a civil rights lawyer because I want to become a professional author as well. So, majoring in English is perfect for me.

17. "Why Political Science?" University of Michigan Essay Example

Riding the elevator to the seventh floor of Haven Hall, my heart was practically leaping out of my chest. I was meeting with Dr. Jenna Bednar of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts Department of Political Science, and as I recalled her credentials- B.A. in Political Science from Michigan, M.A. and PhD in Political Science from Stanford- I felt increasingly out of place. As a junior in high school with limited political experience, I am grateful that she agreed to take time out of her day to meet with me and answer my numerous questions about LSA, Michigan, and political theory.

Upon entering her office, my eyes were drawn to bookshelves full of political literature, from the classics like De Tocqueville and Locke (which I read in a summer college program in 2017), to her own recently published work, The Robust Federation. Encouraged by her broad smile and having just completed an official campus tour, I launched into my questions. Dr. Bednar described the connections she and her students have made at Michigan, through LSA and in general.

This revealed to me that the faculty would take a personal interest in my academic career. We discussed the average class size in LSA and the Department of Political Science, her academic background, and how to survive Michigan winters. Dr. Bednar then brought my attention to the benefits that LSA Political Science gives its students.

For example, as head of the Michigan in Washington program, Dr. Bednar's passion for both political science and education was evident as she introduced me to one of Michigan's most influential academic programs. Although I hail from two miles outside the D.C. border, I aspire to participate in the Michigan in Washington program, to build on my internship of the past year with my delegate to the Maryland General Assembly.

Under his guidance, I conducted nationwide policy research, attended civic association meetings and development forums, and traveled to our state capitol to watch the legislative process unfold. Consequently, an internship at the federal level is my logical next step toward building the foundations of a political career.

Dr. Bednar, upon hearing about my internship with my delegate, suggested that I think about the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program. I believe that this research program offers a unique means of building my understanding of political science. I am eager to apply to the UROP program in hopes of furthering my research skills within the complex political landscape of today. Furthermore, the variety of courses that I can explore as a political science major is remarkable: from "Sports, Politics, and Society", to "Nations and Nationalism," the scope of topics will keep me engaged.

When I sat down with Dr. Bednar, I expected a five-minute chat; I received forty-five minutes of helpful advice, political theorizing, and well wishes. Leaving her office, I felt energized and ready to dive into LSA Political Science right there. Her demeanor helped to build my confidence to boldly seek connections in my search for knowledge. I saw the Michigan difference firsthand, from various undergraduate opportunities for political science, to a universal love for the school from students and faculty alike.

I remember boiling down cabbage with my dad to make titration indicators. When I first read about the process of translation, of rendering mRNA into proteins, my eyes filled with tears; this is what I would do, apply the chemistry that had defined my childhood to my love of biology. In the past few months alone, MIT researchers have visualized a critical growth kinase and decoded the kavalactone gene. To major in both the chemistry and biology departments at MIT would be an unequaled opportunity to explore the molecular basis of life and apply that knowledge to real-world innovation.

19. "Why Neuroscience?" University of Michigan Essay Example

My favorite class in high school was also my hardest. It was World Culture/World Literature, an hour and a half each day of seeing history, art, and literature not as separate entities but as intricately connected, one incomplete without the other. I learned to see humanism in Greek sculpture, religious propaganda in the chiaroscuro of Baroque paintings, disillusionment in modern art. Although seemingly unrelated to my STEM-leaning interests, the analytical skills I learned there would prove invaluable in neuroscience research. With classes like “Health, Biology, and Society: What is Cancer?”, bridging humanistic and biological approaches to disease, and graduation requirements ranging from Natural Sciences to Race and Ethnicity, LSA prepares students for the real world, where problems necessitate not just single-minded expertise but also a diverse understanding of other factors involved. My internship experience only confirmed the practicality of this perspective; we used mindfulness meditation alongside spinal cord stimulation technologies to treat chronic pain.

This mindset is not confined to learning inside the classroom. The LSA Opportunity Hub is robust, connecting students to internships at Nike, Forbes, and the US Department of Education, among other places. To intern as a research assistant at Mayo Clinic, to use mathematical models to predict brain tumor growth like current Michigan junior Tatum Doyle would be an unequalled opportunity. Her work in incorporating mathematical concepts in medical research personifies the LSA culture, where problems are best solved holistically. LSA’s interdisciplinary approach does not detract from fostering specialization and excellence in specific fields, but adds; its Biochemistry program promotes innovation and independence in its students and is ranked top in the nation.

To research under a PI like Dr. Kopelman, winner of the J. William Fulbright Research Award, would be a dream fulfilled. His work in employing 5-dimensional chemical imaging to visualize and treat tumors does what LSA does best; it uses an interdisciplinary approach to make academic discoveries both relevant and essential in the real world. It is a culture I would be honored to take part in, should I be accepted.

20. "Why Undeclared?" University of Michigan Essay Example

Sweat drips down my face onto homework in front of me.

I just got home from a soccer game; I’m not stressed. This is until I realize I still have a plethora of edits to make on my lab report as well as emails to write for an upcoming NHS event. AND I have three tests the next day.

Although stressful, I enjoy every minute of juggling a variety of academics and extracurriculars. I appreciate all the opportunities my high school offers to me and I take advantage of as many as I can handle. Thanks to my involved years of high school, I have received a great education as well as many experiences I would never trade away.

Entering my senior year and researching universities I may want to attend, there is one question which continuously presents itself. What do I want to major in when I get to college? It is a scary question and I have never known the answer. Despite participating in many extracurriculars such as National Honor Society, Science Olympiad, Math Honor Society, and Future Business Leaders of America, I still have no idea what I want to do with my life.

As a student at LSA, I would be able to use the abundance of resources to explore possibilities for life after college. Since I am one of the many college applicants who has not decided upon a major, a large, liberal arts college like LSA is the perfect place for me to discover more about myself, pursue interests, and find my purpose. I have considered medicine, business, economics, and law. The two courses I have enjoyed the most are biomedical sciences and US History. I am truly all over the map!

With so much variety at LSA, I would be able to change majors or take a diverse group of classes so that I could find what I want to study. LSA is unique from its University of Michigan counterparts because it offers a broader range of departments, majors, and courses. The flexibility at LSA would help me discover what I want my life to be like while supporting me through my journey.

Additionally, LSA provides students with multiple opportunities not found anywhere else at University of Michigan. One program that caught my eye was Michigan Learning Communities. This program appeals to me because having the resources of this large university, yet finding a niche in the community to challenge myself and others, can help me grow as a student and a person. Similarly, the Opportunity Hub at LSA jumped out at me as I researched the University and toured the school. I would take full advantage of the great connections the Opportunity Hub provides, as it could help me find an internship or job offer when the perfect time comes. MLCs, the Opportunity Hub, and the many other programs which LSA offers are the main reasons why LSA would be the best college fit for me.

I was initially drawn to the University of Michigan by the beautiful campus, great athletics programs, unmatched prestige, and massive alumni network. However, as I dove deeper, I discovered LSA, a school that can help me realize my purpose and passions while providing a focused learning environment to lead me to a bright future.

Consider your ideas and aspirations and describe how a Cornell Engineering education would allow you to leverage technological problem-solving to improve the world we live in. (250-650 words)

For "Why Us?" college essays, one of the most important parts is to show ways you imagine being involved on campus. This student does a great job of showing that they've done their research about Cornell, by connecting their passion for studying heart disease to specific initiatives already taking place on campus. Try researching what events, research, or programs are being conducted. By referencing those specifics, you can create convincing reasons of why this school is fit for you.

When discussing your intended area of study, one effective strategy is to identify a problem that you see. This problem can be in the field itself, your community, or the world. Then, you can connect this problem to yourself by showing how you'd want to help solve it. Don't try to tackle it entirely yourself, but show how you'd "take bites" out of this larger problem. It is also important that you identify potential solutions to the problem. You definitely don't (and shouldn't) have all the answers, but what do you see as potential steps for combatting the issue?

Using technical language, such as referencing "semi-elliptical curves" and "modular form" in this essay, will help show your in-depth knowledge and passion. Don't be afraid to use technical jargon like this, and don't worry if admissions officers may not know all the terms. As long as they have context and knowing the terminology isn't critical to understanding your point, including "nerdy" language will make your essay more engaging and demonstrate your intelligence.

If you have personal connections to the school you're applying to (such as legacy, family members who work there, students or faculty you're close with), it can be a good idea to reference those connections. Showing personal connections to the school makes admissions think, "They're already practically one of us!" Just make sure that these connections aren't contrived: only write about them if you have a clear purpose within your essay for introducing them. In this essay, the student references their brother who attended Cornell, but does so in a way that naturally ties into the rest of their reasons for "why Cornell."

Prompt: Why are you drawn to the area(s) of study you indicated? (150 words max)

There was a time when I was low and afraid to be with myself. That’s when I dived into programming. I always sat with my laptop. But unlike others on Instagram or Snapchat, I was coding. I always kept myself occupied so I wouldn’t think about hardships. But as I was solving those little Instantiation and StackOverflow errors, I realized that any problem in my life had a solution. I could either modify the code and right the wrong, or just keep compiling them, producing no output. So, life is not all that different. That is why I want to pursue Computer Science. I know I can work to keep myself happy. Inevitably, what makes me happy is Computer Science, which is what I want to pursue.

There are lots of things that I can say I’m good at like swimming or painting but what I really love is cooking. Coking is my talent. I love to cook for my family and love ones.

It feels good when I see them satisfied and happy in what I cook for them. I think that’s the best part of all, they say it’s hard to mess up with kitchen but when you see people smile after they eat it’s really feels good and all the sweat and preparations is worth it. You just have to feel passionate about it, and don’t just cook to feed yourself, cook as a therapeutic activity, cooking can de-stress. Best way to be a good cook is to use all five of your senses – touch what u are making with clean hands of course, knead the dough don’t use a machine, our hands give out body heat and that actually works with the dough, smell the lovely aromas, see the ingredients turning into a meal, hear the spices crackling, and lastly taste the wonders u have created.

Furthermore, following recipes makes me feel like I am making a medicine or something, try a recipe from a book once, after that use the book for ingredients and go by instinct on the seasonings etc. I have cooked with my heart since I was 16 and now I think I am pretty good at it and learned different dishes and techniques to improve my cooking skills. I think one of the reasons why I love cooking is that it gives extra fulfillment for me. Knowing your family appreciates what you do and love is overwhelming.

Also, for me I think the best ingredient for cooking is love. Everything that you do no matter what it is will turn out great if you really love it. In addition, cooking for your family will create extra bond and special instead of eating in a restaurant or elsewhere. They say “the best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” and I think it really works.

Despite the challenges that giftedness can add to self-formation during early adolescence, gifted young adolescents seldom are asked about their lives outside of counselling and educational contexts. The study considers the complexities that face gifted young adolescents in the process of self-discovery and self-representation, thereby building a case for seeking their own viewpoints. A guiding assumption for the study was that gifted young adolescents may respond positively to the opportunity to share their own perspectives and their own versions of “who they are”. The theoretical underpinnings for this study drew from Dialogical Self Theory. The study resides within an interactive view of self as a dynamic construction rather than a static state, where “who we are” is formed in everyday exchanges with self and others. Self-making as a process among gifted young adolescents is presented as an interactive network of “I” voices interpreted to reflect internal and external dialogue. In this way, self is understood within dialogical concepts of voices as multiple expressions. The study invited twelve gifted young adolescents to write freely about themselves over a six month period in an email journal project. Participants were recruited online and by word-of-mouth and they were able to negotiate their own levels of involvement. Access to the lives of individual young adolescents was sought in an out-of-school setting using narrative methods of personal writing in the form of journals sent as emails to the researcher. The role of the researcher was to act as a supportive listener who responded to participant-led emails and thereby facilitated the process of authoring that occurred across the data-gathering phase. The listening process involved responses that were affirming and designed to build trust. Data in the form of email texts were analysed using a close listening method that uncovered patterns of voices that were explicitly or subtly expressed by participants. The interpretation of voices highlighted the tensions and contradictions involved in the process of participants forming a “self” that emerged as multiple “I” voices. There were three key findings of the study. First, the gifted young adolescent participants each constructed a self around four key voices of Author, Achiever, Resistor/Co-operator and Self-Innovator. These voices were dialogical self-constructions that showed multiplicity as a normal way of being. Second, the self-making processes of the gifted young adolescent participants were guided by a hierarchy of voices that were directed through self-awareness. Third, authoring in association with a responsive adult listener emerged as a dialogic space for promoting self-awareness and a language of self-expression among gifted young adolescents. The findings of the study contribute to knowledge about gifted young adolescents by presenting their own versions of “who” they are, perspectives that might differ from mainstream perceptions. Participants were shown to have highly diverse, complex and individual expressions that have implications for how well they are understood and supported by others. The use of email journals helped to create a synergy for self-disclosure and a safe space for self-expression where participants’ abilities to be themselves were encouraged. Increased self-awareness and self-knowledge among gifted young adolescents is vital to their self-formation and their management of self and others’ expectations. This study makes an original contribution to the field of self-study by highlighting the processes and complexities of young adolescents’ self-constructions. Through the innovative use of narrative methods and an inter-disciplinary approach, the voices of gifted young adolescents were privileged. At a practical level, the study can inform educators, policy-makers, parents and all those who seek to contribute to the well-being of gifted young adolescents.

Who is the best judge of a person’s abilities—the person, a knowledgeable informant or strangers just met in a 3-min speed date? To test this, we collected ability measures as well as self-, informant- and stranger-estimates of verbal, numerical and spatial intelligence, creativity, and intra- and interpersonal emotional competence from 175 young adults. While people themselves were the most accurate about the majority of their abilities, their verbal and spatial intelligence were only estimable by informants or strangers, respectively. These differences in accuracy were not accompanied by differences in the domains’ relevance to people’s self-worth or observability to strangers. These results indicate self-other knowledge asymmetries for abilities but raise questions about the reasons behind these asymmetries.

Based on my autoethnographic work, this paper illuminates the consequences of allowing a focus on achievement to overshadow the importance of the inner experience of giftedness. Growing up identified as a gifted child, but lacking an awareness of what it means to be gifted, created great inner conflict as I struggled with feeling too different and out of sync from the norm. As an adult, I have found that Dąbrowski's theory of positive disintegration provides a framework for understanding the power of multilevel development. Lacking guidance to help me understand that these differences were indicators of strong developmental potential—and not mental illness—led to two decades of inappropriate treatment. To ignore or deny the inner experience is an injustice to gifted individuals of all ages.

The self-image of a group of 177 adolescents talented in one of five areas — mathematics, science, music, athletics, and art — was compared to that of a normal group of teenagers, using the Offer Self-Image Questionnaire for Adolescents (OSIQ). In addition, correlations between the talented OSIQ scores and instructor ratings of engagement and aptitude in the talent area was obtained. The findings indicate that talented adolescents educated in a normal high school setting evidence patterns of self-image and esteem very similar to their more average peers. The talented teenagers, however, also report considerable uncertainty involving issues of sexual and social competence. Discussion focuses on the implications of these findings for later patterns of talent development.

20 Things I’m Proud To Have Done

There are so many articles entitled “25 things I wished I knew before” or “25 things you should do now to feel more productive” or “10 things that are killing your productivity/creativity”.

I used to read these articles. To learn from others’ experiences, to take note of their advices and to draw my own ‘to do list’ for my mid-twenties.

But I felt like there was something wrong though I couldn’t explain it.

I used to like these articles, because they helped me build my better self , they helped me enhance my productivity. So what could be wrong with them ?

Then I realized.
  • They always imply first that you are not good enough. They start by telling you that you are wrong and that you have to change.
  • They always have something to do with regret. If you don’t follow these rules now, you will regret it. And I was becoming more and more afraid of regrets. It felt like I have to do so many things now if I didn’t want to have regrets.

In one sentence :

They made me feel guilty.

But that’s thinking in a negative way!?

Why couldn’t we share a positive way of think? Do things after a positive thought instead of a both negative and regretful one.

What if, instead of listing what I wish I had done, I list all what I am proud to have done, so to encourage others to do them and encourage myself to do more ?

I didn’t say that I didn’t like these articles. I still believe that they are helpful.

But I want to show you that what you have done before was also great and you have to keep it or just do it better.

This is NOT about showing off what one has done in his or her life. This is not a competition of what things are better .

I believe you are all mature enough now to reflect on things you have done and which you are proud of, so you may share them to others as simple examples or models. It could be anything.

From helping someone to cross the street to telling your parents that you love them. From giving a coin to someone in need to visiting your grandparents. From sharing you knowledge with someone to staying with a friend in need.

I am sure you have done plenty of things that made others feel grateful and that you could be proud for. Write them done.

Stop living your life with regrets. remember that you have done good things. and now repeat or do them better..

Start feeling grateful and joyful for what you already did and what you already have. Realize that you have done things that might seem insignificant at first but that could be inspiring for others.

Don’t try to inspire the world. Start to inspire one single person, only one, and that will be way enough.

So here are 20 things I am proud to have done.

I don’t pretend that they are “BIG” realizations. But at least I did and do things that I believe are worth it and feel proud of doing them. And it makes me want to do more of them.

I feel joyful when I think of them. I tell myself that I managed to do things and it encourages me to do more so I can add them to the list of things that I am proud of.

I guess it’s kind of a virtuous circle for me.

#1 I take time for my family and friends

Too many people don’t realize how precious family or close friends actually are. They prefer to wander around, hang out with some new people, be social instead of cultivating deep relationships. But the best moments are always those we share with people we truly love.

And remember that there are always people to laugh with you, but few to cry with you. I am glad I took time to stay with my family and my best friends, because now I have plenty of exceptional memories with them and I can’t wait to have more of them.

#2 I started to write on Medium

Writing has always been my very first passion since childhood. But I never dared to share my writings except with some privileged friends. I never dared to write a blog either, because I was too afraid of being disappointed by a low audience.

It all started last year. I decided to try to post my writings online. Someone told me about Medium and I thought : why not ? So I tried. I posted one of my texts and I even shared it on Facebook. I was so surprised by all the people who liked it!

Then I decided to write even more. I joined the Community of Medium France, I began to write more and more. As I was writing I got more and more inspiration. I was so surprised when people in my school would stop me and say “Hey, I read your last article, I liked it!”

I had never been used to such a recognition. And I truly began to feel proud of what I was writing. Actually, to say the truth, I was finally proud to share my writing. They are part of me. I don’t need to be ashamed of them. Some people may not like them. Some may ignore them. But some others like them, and that’s all I care about. If I can inspire some people, that’s enough for me, because that’s already awesome compared to my shy self few years back.

#3 I smile and I help people

I love to smile in the streets. With friends, with strangers, with tourists, with everyone. And people smile back to me. It makes me feel joyful. Actually I even wrote about the power of a free smile .

Then, I try my best to help others. Actually, I believe in human kindness, I really do. Some people never hesitated to help me, when I was lost and when I was facing staircases with a heavy handbag in the metro. I believe in karma: if you are good to the world, the world will be good with you. How could you expect otherwise? So I help people in the streets. When I can, I give some money to beggars in the street. If I buy a sandwich menu in a bakery, I pay 1 or 2€ more for a cookie or a salad that I can give to people in need in the streets. I try to talk to musicians in the metro. I try to understand their story. Because everyone has his or her own stories, challenges, problems, and we can all try to make the world better by joining our forces together.

#4 I wrote a thesis all in Chinese

This was a challenge for myself. Chinese has always been my mother tongue, but I was too lazy to learn to write the characters as a child. So, when I went to high school, I decided to try. There are so many characters to remember! And as soon as I learned new characters, I felt like I was forgetting the previous ones. So, two years ago, during my Masters, I decided to challenge myself by writing a thesis about Superstitions all in chinese. It took me time, it took me hard work, but I did it !

Never give up, challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone.

#5 I read a lot of books

I love reading since childhood. I could read for hours, more than one book or two books for week. I love stories, I love the dreams they give me, I love the paths they show me, I love the universe they open to me. And I believe that I learned a lot thanks to books. I learned empathy, glory, love, true happiness, travels and so much more. Today, I still read a lot. I can’t understand people who tell me they can’t find time to read when they spend so much time on social media, just scrolling some random photos. Books are full of secrets or knowledge, can’t you feel excited to listen to them all ?

#6 I made my own morning routine

It takes no more than 4'30 minute in the morning, and it makes me feel really good. I wrote about it here . :-)

These are, for now, my most important realizations, that encourage me to do more. Then comes the following :

  • I work as a freelance besides my studies to have some money and I managed to gain happy clients
  • I travelled in Asia with my mother instead of traveling with my friends and it was one of my most incredible memories with her
  • I learned music when I was younger, and though I didn’t graduated from the Conservatory school, I prefer to feel happy for having knowledge in music rather than regretting the latter
  • I played in a Musical on a famous Parisian stage
  • I do sports every week to keep healthy and I managed to run 10km in one hour
  • I give a call to my parents whenever I can so they don’t feel worried
  • I share candies with children because I love the way they smile
  • I went for dinner in a Restaurant where everything was in the dark, to put myself in a blind person’s shoes
  • I went to my favorite bands’ concert when I was in high school
  • The first time I hiked in my life, it was in Switzerland, and I succeeded in hiking more than 15 hours in a week-end on steep mountains
  • I learned to cook thanks to my boyfriend and I love cooking now
  • When a friend needs me, I will do whatever to help him or her
  • I worked for a social association and helped people in need
  • I used to be shy, but I forced myself not to be it anymore and now I am not afraid anymore of speaking in public

Of course, I have also regrets for some things. But regrets only drive me to complain. That’s not a solution.

So I prefer to act rather than writing down my regrets. Time is precious, and it’s not worth it to use it for regrets.

But before my regrets don’t erase the good things I have done, I also want to remember that I could be a good person. Therefore it’s important for me to keep a list.

This list will help remember that you CAN do great things. And it encourages you to do MORE.

Be positive. stop feeling guilty if you don’t follow productivity rules. remember that every one should follow his or her own way. and it starts with who you are., and this list of yours will show you that you are a also a great person that you should be proud of..

How to Increase Your Essay Word Count

Add Examples

Skim through your essay looking for any place you have used an example to make a point. In most cases, you should be able to provide additional examples which will make your essay stronger by showing your understanding of the topic while also increasing the word count. You can also go through the essay and look for statements made where inserting an example would be appropriate to help support the statement.

Address Different Viewpoints

An effective way of increasing word count and improving your essay at the same time is to address different viewpoints to your own. You have the opportunity to discuss how these alternative viewpoints differ from the conclusions you have made, and it gives you an opportunity to explain why you believe your conclusions are superior. This shows you have considered a range of different opinions while coming to your conclusions, and in doing so make your essay stronger while adding more words.

Clarify Statements

When you find the statements in your writing, if inserting an example doesn’t make sense, then clarifying the statement may be appropriate. This can be achieved by inserting one or more specific statements to clarify the original one. A common way to do this is to follow the statement with, “In other words…” It’s important not to over-clarify statements or use this for every statement you write as it will begin to look like filler, but using it sporadically throughout your essay can increase the word count and show you perfectly understand the points you’re trying to make.

Find Additional Sources

Another way to improve your essay and increase word count is to find additional sources you haven’t previously mentioned which support the statements and conclusions you have made. The more sources you have, the stronger the essay will be in most cases. Spending some time searching for additional sources to add to the essay can be a great way to add quality content to it.

Use Quotations

Chances are you already have appropriate quotations in your essay, and if that’s the case, skip over this suggestion. Adding more will likely not add to your essay. If you haven’t used any, however, finding appropriate quotations from experts in the field that support your statements can be an excellent way to add words to your essay while improving it at the same time.

Rework Introduction and Conclusion

If all of the above haven’t enabled you to reach your word count minimum and you need some filler, look to put it in your introduction and conclusion rather than the body of the essay. Most teachers give more leeway with the introduction and conclusion to be wordy than the guts of the essay. This is something you should try to avoid if at all possible (it’s never good to be wordier than you have to be), but if you tried everything else, it’s better to do it in these two places than in the heart of the essay.

If you’re writing an essay which has a minimum page count instead of a minimum word count, the above suggestions will work, but you have a bit more wiggle room as well. You can make slight adjustments to the font and font size you use through a Words per Page Counter . As long as you don’t go overboard, this can be a relatively easy way to increase page count while not taking away from the essay.

I hate it when teachers give a word count. Word count shouldn’t matter at all. It should be the quality of the writing. If I can get my point across in 1000 words, why do I need to write 2500? It makes no sense at all.

You have never been a teacher. If you ever are, you will know why we give word counts.

That’s a lazy answer. Students who write well shouldn’t be punished with a word count because other students aren’t good students. It’s the teacher’s job to help those students who aren’t doing as well without forcing those good students to do stupid things that make no sense for them.

If you can make it more fun to read, this can also help with word count. Add emphasizes or explain something in more detail. There are so many great ways to increase your word count. It shouldn’t be too hard if you put your mind to it!

This isn’t the correct question to ask. It’s easy to increase word count on an essay, but it’s difficult to increase word count to make the essay better. So many people decide to increase their word count by inserting sentences, paragraphs, quotes and other non-necessary information simply to reach the word count. While it achieves the goal of increasing the word count, it doesn’t make the essay any better, and it usually makes it much worse. What you should always strive for is to increase the number of words in the essay while also making the essay stronger than it was before.

In my experience, college is even worse than high school in this regard. I regularly have to conform to word counts and page counts. Right now, I’m writing a research paper that has an 8 page minimum. Why? Because the professor said so. I could certainly be a lot more concise if I didn’t have to pad it out, but this is what’s required of me. The kicker is that the prof is DEFINITELY going to take off points due to obvious padding. DON’T FORCE ME INTO AN ARBITRARY LENGTH, THEN.

Just change the font style to a bigger one and then do the same with the size of the font but not too big or it will seem too obvious.

This is a poor answer because it doesn’t give any reason for the word counts. The point was that they -don’t- know why the word counts are necessary, and just stating that “you don’t have my experience and if you did you’d know why” isn’t an argument or a good contribution to the discussion, when surely it would have been a better idea to just explain why word counts are necessary in the first place.

I’m not a teacher but I do understand that word counts push students to do their best, although I according to everyone, have always been teacher’s pet, and I love to write so having a word count is an amazing way for me to experiment with my writing.

But I have an assignment in which they say use the set format, which doesn’t allow for many words, but they say it has to be 500. I physically can’t stick to the structure and the word count. I understand max word counts, but I can get my entire point across in 300 words, and I am seriously struggling to increase. On the other hand, I think that maximum word counts can actually be beneficial because it forces the students to better edit their writing.

I ask simply because I am a teacher, a high school English teacher to be more specific, and I found your comment to be nothing but overblown opinion. I cannot speak for every teacher, but in my class, I have to put a minimum word count on my essay assignments or I would have the majority of the students attempt to turn in a paragraph and say it is an essay. It would not matter that I instructed them on the purpose of the essay, explained what an introductory paragraph, body paragraph, and a conclusion paragraph are and their individual purposes. It also would not matter if I also spent an entire six week grading period teaching, instructing, modeling, and practicing writing essay, I would still have some that would turn in a ridiculously short essay and argue that they have “gotten to the point.” However, any logical person would know that these student’s essays would not meet the required components of an essay and would not serve as evidence of mastery, which is what a teacher is suppose to do right? Help students master certain skills, regardless of what is “easier on” them?

Instead of using a minimum word count, say that you must have at least five paragraphs, and if they turn in 5 sentences, that’s on them. High school students know that a section is longer than a sentence. And if they pretend not too, that’s on them. And your problem that they turn in just a paragraph? They know what an essay is, they are lazy and, quite frankly, don’t care about the class. So give them an incomplete grade and the chance to rewrite it, if they decline, they have failed that assignment. It is harsh but necessary.

I don’t think you understand: if I can get it across in a short paragraph, and otherwise it would be graded well, then why should I have to write a three-hundred word long paragraph just to explain the same thing? I shouldn’t have to. That’s the answer.

A thesaurus is your friend when you are only a bit under word count. I’m glad to see you added one to your tool. it’s so much easier than going back and forth to another thesaurus website. Thank you for making this useful tool and not charging any money for it.

Adjectives and adverbs can help with this, but it won’t make the essay stronger. You usually want to eliminate adverbs and adjectives in your writing to make it better. You have to make a decision as to whether word count is more important or a better essay is more important before using these methods.

As a teacher, I’m glad to see legitimate ways for students to increase their essay word count instead of all the “tricks” students don’t think we know, but we do. Adding random words in white so it appears the word count is higher than it is doesn’t work because we know approximately how many pages the assignment should be. Best to actually do the work!

You are the exception. I have a great way to increase word count when I’m short on words. I will write a bunch of random text at the end of the essay, then change it to white so you can’t see it even though it’s there. Now the teacher thinks you have written the required word count. Brilliant! Teachers are so clueless that this works 100% of the time. Now you will never be under your word count and you don’t have to write a bunch of filler crap that isn’t needed. You can thank me later.

I think attitude has a lot to do with it. If you’re writing an essay you have little to no interest in writing, it’s much more difficult to write it and reach the word count. If it’s something you have a lot of interest in, then the issue is usually staying beneath the word count limit. One of the best ways to increase word count on essays is to take an interest in the topic. If you learn to become more curious and have an interest in things that may not at first seem to be interesting, you’ll be surprised at how much easier it is to write essays and to always reach the designated word count.

That easy to say and all, what if your teacher assigns you a topic? And what if that topic is totally boring? If you can’t increase your word count, you don’t know what you’re writing about well enough. There should be no issue writing about any topic up to 5000 words as long as you are familiar with the topic. As teachers, we know approximately how long an essay should be to get the points across for that particular assignment. That is why we assign a word count. If the student is well under they have not explored the topic in-depth enough and if they are well over, they are being too wordy.

Still you don’t need a word count, just let the kids try and let them be creative 😒!

I’ve never been a teacher but have been a university student. Personally, I get very uncomfortable when word counts aren’t given, because the fact is that the professor likely has a quiet expectation on the issue. I don’t want to try to have to hit that count by inference.

The word count at my University is a maximum word count, not a minimum. The word count is there to suggest the level of detail we’re expected to go into. For example, my last essay had a 2,500 word maximum. I could easily have written a 10,000 word dissertation or a 100 word summary. For the detail expected. I ended up with 2,464 words. If you’re writing 1,000 words for a 2,500 word essay, even if that seems OK to you, you’ve not added enough detail.

Nowadays, most of people think that competition is satisfactory thing at work, school and life while others believe that cooperation is better than competing against each other. I am in favor of the latter view. In this essay pros and cons of this subject will be discussed.

On the one hand, straggling with other provids a couple of advantages, one of the most important ones is getting more information about personal data. competition assist us to improve individual skills. For example, competing is an excellent thing among students to become successful in the future life. This is because, they try more and more to pass their exams.

On the other hand, competition offers a great number of disadvantages, such as, jealousy, disorganization, chaos and so on. If we want to achieve good results, we have to work with other. For instance, working on a group aim us to get achievement. In my point of view, solving problems is one of the best things of cooperative.

To conclude, attempting to get better life and success at work rooted in working with others. I think life is all about cooperation. I do not know, why people have competition against each others.

Donald J. Trump and his allies are planning a sweeping expansion of presidential power over the machinery of government if voters return him to the White House in 2025, reshaping the structure of the executive branch to concentrate far greater authority directly in his hands.

Their plans to centralize more power in the Oval Office stretch far beyond the former president’s recent remarks that he would order a criminal investigation into his political rival, President Biden, signaling his intent to end the post-Watergate norm of Justice Department independence from White House political control.

Mr. Trump and his associates have a broader goal: to alter the balance of power by increasing the president’s authority over every part of the federal government that now operates, by either law or tradition, with any measure of independence from political interference by the White House, according to a review of his campaign policy proposals and interviews with people close to him.

Mr. Trump intends to bring independent agencies — like the Federal Communications Commission, which makes and enforces rules for television and internet companies, and the Federal Trade Commission, which enforces various antitrust and other consumer protection rules against businesses — under direct presidential control.

He wants to revive the practice of “impounding” funds, refusing to spend money Congress has appropriated for programs a president doesn’t like — a tactic that lawmakers banned under President Richard Nixon.

He intends to strip employment protections from tens of thousands of career civil servants, making it easier to replace them if they are deemed obstacles to his agenda. And he plans to scour the intelligence agencies, the State Department and the defense bureaucracies to remove officials he has vilified as “the sick political class that hates our country.”
