Welcome to the Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research

Meet the team   2023/24 Cohort More information   Alumni

The Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research is a part-time taught programme, delivered entirely online over four terms (14 months). The course is designed for those involved in the funding, collaboration, design, delivery or regulation of research in global health. It will equip students with a thorough understanding of the steps and processes required to conduct high quality and ethically framed studies within the contextual realities of resource constrained settings. Find more information here.

There is still vast inequity in where research happens and who benefits, and yet evidence from low resource settings is pivotal for successful health interventions everywhere. To address persistent skills gaps, this course teaches students from anywhere in the world to design, conduct and report ethical, internationally compliant yet contextually relevant studies, and take findings into policy and practice. Impact goes far beyond the qualification, as we nurture alumni in years to come through The Global Health Network’s knowledge areas, tools, resources, training and career development opportunities.

Students may be working in research sites, pharmaceutical companies, contract research organisation, regulators and funders. To achieve maximum equity and diversity, those in low resource settings do not need to leave their workplace or family, and travel to a high-income country with all the associated costs.

Please consider supporting such students in accessing this life changing qualification and developing a legacy for them and their wider research networks, whether a staff member or through a bursary.

Course content.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research is a part-time taught programme, delivered entirely online over four terms (14 months). The course is designed for those involved in the funding, design, delivery or regulation of research in global health. It will equip students with a thorough understanding of the steps and processes required to conduct high quality and ethically framed studies within the contextual realities of resource constrained settings.

INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

This highly practical qualification can facilitate real impact at a local level for the healthcare settings in which our target students are located, importantly and uniquely across the whole spectrum of health research. It will cover the challenges of working in low resource settings with vulnerable populations and consider all the regulatory and ethical requirements, alongside robust study design and operational delivery. It will teach how to plan such studies from setting the research question to taking research findings into practice.

This programme is a postgraduate course for professionals who are able to learn from the programme and add value to the learning experience of all participants by sharing their own practical experiences. Accordingly, this programme is designed for learners who are able to reflect on and learn from their own experiences.

We welcome students diverse in gender, geography, academic and professional backgrounds. All of this will provide a variety of perspectives and approaches which will enrich the learning environment.

The postgraduate diploma is very different from all other courses for two key reasons:

Firstly, it refers entirely to health issues specific to diseases of poverty in low-resource countries.

Secondly, this is an operational and highly applied course that covers the steps needed to set up studies across all types of health research, including and importantly beyond clinical trials.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

This postgraduate diploma aims to enhance knowledge and raise standards of professionals working in health research in a global context so they can work in teams and lead successful and high-quality research studies. Students will be equipped to implement best research practices, typically in low resource settings. The core objective is to prepare students to resolve difficult challenges by providing them with tools, skills and knowledge to generate high quality, safe and ethical evidence, and to inculcate in them the competence and ambition to become leaders in health research.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this programme, successful graduates will be able to:

  • Design and implement high quality, ethical, health research studies in a global health setting.
  • Translate their research into new guidelines, policies, best practices or recommendations.
  • Effectively manage data throughout the life cycle of a research study, from data gathering to analysis, presentation and sharing.
  • Practice research with consideration of its broader community and societal impact.

This online Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research fulfils a unique training need by providing an academically rigorous and pragmatic approach that will equip students with real-world skills for designing and implementing impactful global health research across many varied topics and population settings.

The course aims to enhance knowledge and raise standards of professionals working in health research in a global context so they can lead successful and high-quality research studies.

Students will discover best practices in global health research studies, the mechanisms, the methods and processes required to implement good quality, safe and ethical research, typically in low resource settings. Through practical case studies and applied tasks, you will gain sufficient experience to implement what you learn in order to resolve difficult challenges and become the next generation of leaders in your field of study.

The postgraduate diploma is an online four-term programme that teaches the key steps required to carry out good research in the context of global health. As a student, you will learn to formulate viable research questions, you will consider target populations within your area of interest, create study plans addressing sample size and understand the variables that might affect your results. You will learn how to avoid errors in design and implementation, the most common reasons for getting wrong answers to research questions and where possible, you will be encouraged to implement your study.

The department's goal is to embed effective health research into the work of healthcare workers and allied professions. Whatever research one is planning, whether it is a randomised controlled trial, or an observational study, knowing what kind of information the study should collect is important, and so researchers may need to use epidemiology data, adapt to different social norms or utilise diagnostics to create valid, evidence based, outcomes. Whatever your research question, the postgraduate diploma will guide you from conception to execution and completion of a final report. Our graduates will conduct their research aware of the larger context within which research takes place, they will plan and implement their projects accordingly and communicate their reasoning and findings as effectively as possible, increasing the probability of successful research and turning that research into practice.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research will provide you with many transferable skills, not least higher-level critical-thinking and analytical skills to enable you to develop professionally as independent learners during and after your programme of study. At the end of the programme, we want our graduates to be intellectually curious, improve global health, gather and analyse data, lead research projects, make good decisions and continue on a journey of life-long learning, like all Oxford graduates.

The MPH (Global Health) is a strand of the Master in Public Health programme and is aimed at professionals already working, or aiming to work, in healthcare settings in low-and middle-income countries.

The MPH (Global Health) is an exit qualification from our Master Public Health (MPH) programme. Applications for the MPH (Global Health) strand are made through the  standard Master in Public Health programme .

This modular, multidisciplinary programme in public health offers a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or a Masters qualification. It is an exciting and engaging programme developed in response to demand from public health professionals around the world, and delivered by global academic and field experts in public health and health systems. The course builds upon our well-established and successful Master of Public Health through the addition of modules that contextualise and apply public health topics and skills in relation to low- and middle- income countries.

The course follows the same structure as the standard MPH but includes extra compulsory modules. As well as the three core MPH modules, you will study two additional core modules:

  • Global Health
  • Further Global Health

You will also carry out a dissertation based upon research conducted on low - and middle - income country health or health systems topics. These can be based in Birmingham, such as systematic reviews and data analysis of large datasets, or based upon original data collection in the field, such as in immigrant communities living in the UK or in a low - or middle - income country (either your own country or where a supervisor has links). Supervisors are experts in a range of internationally relevant public health topics with projects in numerous low - and middle - income countries. Field trip work may be covered by supervisor grants but in most cases must be paid for by you and/or your sponsor(s), as the tuition fees do not include travel and field work expenses.

The MPH (Global Health) programme can be studied either full-time, part-time or over a maximum of five years by flexible learning. International students may only study the MPH (Global Health) full-time. Teaching takes place in one-week blocks. The course covers many of the areas necessary for sitting the Part A examination of the Faculty of Public Health.

We have two teaching terms per year, the autumn term and spring term.  Term dates  can be found on our website.

As a full-time student, you will typically take three modules in each term, followed by a dissertation. Depending on the modules you take, you can typically expect six to nine hours of classroom time per week, two or three per module. If you are a part-time student, you will typically take three modules across each year, followed by a dissertation for Masters students.

Each module represents a total of 200 hours of study time, including preparatory reading, homework and assignment preparation.

Teaching takes place in one-week blocks, and you will participate in a range of teaching styles such as lectures, small group tutorials, presentations, peer group learning, self-study etc.

You will have access to a comprehensive support system that will assist and encourage you, including personal tutors and welfare tutors who can help with both academic and welfare issues.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is via a mixture of exams and assignments. If a module is assessed by assignments, you will usually have around four to five weeks to complete it after the module has finished. If a module is assessed by examination, these will take place at the end of May, except for the module 'Epidemiology and Statistics' which takes place before Christmas.

MPH Students complete their Masters degree by also undertaking a research project and writing a 10,000 - word dissertation. This provides an opportunity to pursue a specific area of public health in depth and to demonstrate the knowledge and skills acquired during the taught part of the course. It is therefore undertaken only once the taught modules have been successfully completed.

Key new report reveals urgent need to address Cardiovascular health inequalities in women

12 September 2024

A report published today by the Global Heart Hub (GHH) and the Centre for Research Equity reveals significant issues in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) in Women. The report finds that despite being one of the leading causes of death in women globally, CVD in women remains under-recognised and underdiagnosed.

pgdip in global health research

The report highlights that women are more likely than men to experience delayed or missed diagnoses because they often have their symptoms attributed to other causes like stress or anxiety. This is further complicated by the fact that women’s heart disease can present differently than it does in men, making accurate diagnosis even more challenging. This results in poorer health outcomes, particularly for women from underserved communities.

The Global Heart Hub (GHH) and the Centre for Research Equity have collaborated to tackle the pressing issue of late, missed, and misdiagnosis of heart disease in women. This partnership was part of an international roundtable discussion held in Madrid on April 22, 2024, bringing together a diverse group of global stakeholders from patient organisations, academia, healthcare, and industry to address the challenges faced by women in cardiovascular health.

GHH’s Working Group on Women and Heart Disease is patient-led. It aims to develop actionable recommendations to improve screening, diagnosis, and treatment for women with Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) globally. Dr Paula Wray from the Centre for Research Equity provided crucial support for this initiative, emphasising the importance of equity in healthcare research and practice.

This collaboration exemplifies the CfRE’s mission to advance understanding of and improve inclusive research practice in health and care. By addressing the unique challenges women face in cardiovascular health, we're taking a significant step towards true health equity. - Dr Paula Wray (Centre for Research Equity)

The resulting report titled Late, Missed and Misdiagnosis of Heart Disease in Women delves into the complexities of diagnosis, treatment, and care for cardiovascular disease in women. It addresses the challenges and disparities experienced by those who identify as women and those who face gender-related barriers in accessing healthcare.

The Centre for Research Equity in collaboration with GHH emphasises the critical importance of equity in healthcare for all, with equity extended to barriers such as race, age, socioeconomic factors, ethnicity and sexual orientation.

During the roundtable event, participants reached a consensus on several priority actions designed to address cardiovascular challenges in women:

  • Integrating women’s cardiovascular health into medical education : embedding information on female-specific CVD risk factors and symptoms into medical training for doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Improving public awareness campaigns : launching global initiatives to raise awareness about women’s heart health through patient stories and targeted messaging.
  • Prioritising cardiovascular screenings in primary care : encouraging earlier and more routine heart health screenings for women in primary care settings, focusing on common risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
  • Advocating for gender equity in research : calling for mandatory sex-specific data collection and analysis in CVD research, ensuring that women are fairly represented in clinical trials.

This roundtable discussion marks a significant step towards closing the gender gap in cardiovascular health. By bringing together global stakeholders GHH and the Centre for Research Equity hope to drive change at multiple levels—ensuring that women receive timely, accurate diagnoses, and high-quality care.

The report forms the foundation of future advocacy efforts and will help shape policies and practices aimed at improving heart health outcomes for women around the world.

Student testimonial

I am Martin Wainaina and I come from Nairobi, Kenya. I studied the MSc Global Health and Infectious Diseases programme at the University of Edinburgh’s Global Health Academy. The part-time study programme allowed me to continue with my work in my home country at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). While not easy at all, I learnt with time to integrate my studies with my everyday schedule. My written reflective element in the third year of study involved lab work and writing a thesis. This component for me was by far the most challenging portion of the programme due to the sheer dedication it required. I however found scheduled supervisory meetings with my assigned supervisor, Dr. Kim Picozzi, as well as those from my home institution, Dr. Johanna Lindahl, very helpful in steering me in the right direction, especially in the lab work, writing and timely submission of the dissertation. Since finishing the programme, I published the work that comprised my thesis as a peer reviewed journal article. I later also joined the PhD (Biomedical Sciences) programme in Dahlem Research School at the Freie University of Berlin, in collaboration with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the German Institute of Risk Assessment (BfR). A great advantage of studying in the international programme was meeting students from various fields and countries. This was both online and during summer school. It is always a great thing meeting with some of my colleagues in seminars and conferences and exchanging notes as well as catching up. It is always a joy when I meet a former classmate and see the good progress that they have made in their careers. Combining work and a Masters degree is not an easy task and achieving a good balance does take a while, especially when starting out. However, as with all good things in life, dedication and hard work always rewards. Planning and management of time is vital so that one finishes small tasks before they become too large to handle in the short time available. My lesson therefore is that one needs a positive attitude and to be diligent in the task. When it comes to the written reflective element, proper communication with the supervisors as the project progresses is of great benefit. The flexibility of setting my schedule was definitely a positive aspect as I could build my career in my home country while furthering my education. The Global Health and Infectious Diseases programme offered me a chance to broaden my knowledge base to understand more about various important aspects of infectious diseases, with application in both developed and developing country contexts. The presence of a full fee scholarship from the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission of the United Kingdom (CSCUK) was also an added advantage as this meant that I would not have to worry with school fees.

The University of Oxford launches fully online Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research to tackle inequities in health research leadership

14 October 2022

Beginning in October 2023, the Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research is specifically targeted at researchers and clinicians in low income countries, and will offer accessibility never previously available. It is the University’s first academic qualification designed to be taken wholly online and will transform Oxford’s ability to reach and train researchers in the most challenging of settings. By removing this significant barrier to access, the postgraduate diploma aims to strengthen health workforces’ research capacity, regardless of location and context, to meet ongoing and emerging global health challenges and crises.

pgdip in global health research

In eliminating the requirement to travel to Oxford for researchers and clinicians across the world, the postgraduate diploma will drive equity in where health research happens, who benefits from the evidence, and who leads the studies. And in a further step to advance equitable access for students in lower-income settings, 30% of course participants will be supported with fully funded scholarships.

International subject matter experts with experience of conducting research in the most challenging settings at the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health at the Nuffield Department of Medicine, will deliver the course remotely from their own locations across the world over four terms.

Pre-recorded interactive lectures, discussion forum tasks, live virtual classes, and asynchronous one-to-one tutorials form the basis of weekly lessons and have been designed to retain the learning experience and immersive teaching methods that Oxford is renowned for.

The course will teach students how to design, operate and report a high-quality health research study anywhere in the world and how to put findings into practice.

It has been designed to support the careers of dedicated and ambitious health professionals and researchers across the globe, from every setting. In particular enabling individuals facing the challenges of diseases of poverty and in the most resource-poor settings to develop scientific, management and leadership skills to tackle these diseases.

The course is based on the Essential Curriculum for Health Research which was developed in partnership with the World Health Organisation and based on a study that involved over 7,000 participants. This makes it the first of its kind where all the component steps identified to undertake quality, practical and appropriate health research studies are covered; making it relevant for research into any disease, in all types of studies and in any setting.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research aims to:

  • Teach the steps and processes required to conduct effective research within the contextual realities of resource constrained settings
  • Enhance knowledge and raise the standards of scientists and healthcare professionals working in health research in a global context
  • Prepare students to resolve difficult health research challenges by providing them with the tools, skills and knowledge to conduct high quality, safe and ethical health research
  • Inculcate in our graduates the competence and ambition to become leaders in global health research.

In doing so, the postgraduate diploma will support progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) notably SDG 3.B to ‘support the research and development of vaccines and medicines for the communicable and non-communicable diseases that primarily affect developing countries’; SDG 3.C to ‘substantially increase…development, training and retention of the health workforce in developing countries’ and SDG 3.D to ‘strengthen the capacity of all countries, particularly developing countries, for early warning, risk reduction and management of national and global health risks’.

Professor Trudie Lang, Head of The Global Health Network, University of Oxford says: “ I’m delighted at the launch of the Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research. We have created this course to help address the global disparities in health research by teaching the skills needed to run studies in every healthcare setting. An ideal student could be a highly experienced nurse working in a large public hospital in Bangladesh or Ethiopia, a laboratory scientist in Peru, or members of national and international funding and ethics committees, or those working in regulatory bodies. I’m also very proud that this will be Oxford’s first qualification where travelling to Oxford is not required and that 30% of our intake will be funded places - this is truly transformational and brings true global and diverse access to a qualification from the University of Oxford .”

Professor Gavin Screaton, Head of Medical Sciences Division, University of Oxford says: “ This is a truly exciting moment for the Medical Sciences community at Oxford and across the globe. It is impossible to predict where and when the next global health crisis will emerge so it’s critical that we continue to build the pool of exceptional researchers in every healthcare setting who can become valued contributors to the global research community, while also delivering impact within their local setting. The Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research will do just that for thousands of talented individuals who otherwise would not have that opportunity.”

Professor Martin Williams, Pro Vice Chancellor of Education, University of Oxford says: “ The launch of the Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research shows that Oxford continues to be at the forefront of meeting the challenges of widening access head-on. Alongside the many outreach programmes we run in the UK and overseas, it is another excellent example of our commitment to ensuring talented students around the world can access Oxford’s world-leading teaching and expertise, without financial concerns acting as a barrier.”

The application deadline for the next academic year is Friday 9 December, 2022.
