A report published today by the Global Heart Hub (GHH) and the Centre for Research Equity reveals significant issues in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) in Women. The report finds that despite being one of the leading causes of death in women globally, CVD in women remains under-recognised and underdiagnosed.
The report highlights that women are more likely than men to experience delayed or missed diagnoses because they often have their symptoms attributed to other causes like stress or anxiety. This is further complicated by the fact that women’s heart disease can present differently than it does in men, making accurate diagnosis even more challenging. This results in poorer health outcomes, particularly for women from underserved communities.
The Global Heart Hub (GHH) and the Centre for Research Equity have collaborated to tackle the pressing issue of late, missed, and misdiagnosis of heart disease in women. This partnership was part of an international roundtable discussion held in Madrid on April 22, 2024, bringing together a diverse group of global stakeholders from patient organisations, academia, healthcare, and industry to address the challenges faced by women in cardiovascular health.
GHH’s Working Group on Women and Heart Disease is patient-led. It aims to develop actionable recommendations to improve screening, diagnosis, and treatment for women with Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) globally. Dr Paula Wray from the Centre for Research Equity provided crucial support for this initiative, emphasising the importance of equity in healthcare research and practice.
This collaboration exemplifies the CfRE’s mission to advance understanding of and improve inclusive research practice in health and care. By addressing the unique challenges women face in cardiovascular health, we're taking a significant step towards true health equity. - Dr Paula Wray (Centre for Research Equity)
The resulting report titled Late, Missed and Misdiagnosis of Heart Disease in Women delves into the complexities of diagnosis, treatment, and care for cardiovascular disease in women. It addresses the challenges and disparities experienced by those who identify as women and those who face gender-related barriers in accessing healthcare.
The Centre for Research Equity in collaboration with GHH emphasises the critical importance of equity in healthcare for all, with equity extended to barriers such as race, age, socioeconomic factors, ethnicity and sexual orientation.
During the roundtable event, participants reached a consensus on several priority actions designed to address cardiovascular challenges in women:
This roundtable discussion marks a significant step towards closing the gender gap in cardiovascular health. By bringing together global stakeholders GHH and the Centre for Research Equity hope to drive change at multiple levels—ensuring that women receive timely, accurate diagnoses, and high-quality care.
The report forms the foundation of future advocacy efforts and will help shape policies and practices aimed at improving heart health outcomes for women around the world.

I am Martin Wainaina and I come from Nairobi, Kenya. I studied the MSc Global Health and Infectious Diseases programme at the University of Edinburgh’s Global Health Academy. The part-time study programme allowed me to continue with my work in my home country at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). While not easy at all, I learnt with time to integrate my studies with my everyday schedule. My written reflective element in the third year of study involved lab work and writing a thesis. This component for me was by far the most challenging portion of the programme due to the sheer dedication it required. I however found scheduled supervisory meetings with my assigned supervisor, Dr. Kim Picozzi, as well as those from my home institution, Dr. Johanna Lindahl, very helpful in steering me in the right direction, especially in the lab work, writing and timely submission of the dissertation. Since finishing the programme, I published the work that comprised my thesis as a peer reviewed journal article. I later also joined the PhD (Biomedical Sciences) programme in Dahlem Research School at the Freie University of Berlin, in collaboration with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the German Institute of Risk Assessment (BfR). A great advantage of studying in the international programme was meeting students from various fields and countries. This was both online and during summer school. It is always a great thing meeting with some of my colleagues in seminars and conferences and exchanging notes as well as catching up. It is always a joy when I meet a former classmate and see the good progress that they have made in their careers. Combining work and a Masters degree is not an easy task and achieving a good balance does take a while, especially when starting out. However, as with all good things in life, dedication and hard work always rewards. Planning and management of time is vital so that one finishes small tasks before they become too large to handle in the short time available. My lesson therefore is that one needs a positive attitude and to be diligent in the task. When it comes to the written reflective element, proper communication with the supervisors as the project progresses is of great benefit. The flexibility of setting my schedule was definitely a positive aspect as I could build my career in my home country while furthering my education. The Global Health and Infectious Diseases programme offered me a chance to broaden my knowledge base to understand more about various important aspects of infectious diseases, with application in both developed and developing country contexts. The presence of a full fee scholarship from the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission of the United Kingdom (CSCUK) was also an added advantage as this meant that I would not have to worry with school fees.

14 October 2022
Beginning in October 2023, the Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research is specifically targeted at researchers and clinicians in low income countries, and will offer accessibility never previously available. It is the University’s first academic qualification designed to be taken wholly online and will transform Oxford’s ability to reach and train researchers in the most challenging of settings. By removing this significant barrier to access, the postgraduate diploma aims to strengthen health workforces’ research capacity, regardless of location and context, to meet ongoing and emerging global health challenges and crises.
In eliminating the requirement to travel to Oxford for researchers and clinicians across the world, the postgraduate diploma will drive equity in where health research happens, who benefits from the evidence, and who leads the studies. And in a further step to advance equitable access for students in lower-income settings, 30% of course participants will be supported with fully funded scholarships.
International subject matter experts with experience of conducting research in the most challenging settings at the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health at the Nuffield Department of Medicine, will deliver the course remotely from their own locations across the world over four terms.
Pre-recorded interactive lectures, discussion forum tasks, live virtual classes, and asynchronous one-to-one tutorials form the basis of weekly lessons and have been designed to retain the learning experience and immersive teaching methods that Oxford is renowned for.
The course will teach students how to design, operate and report a high-quality health research study anywhere in the world and how to put findings into practice.
It has been designed to support the careers of dedicated and ambitious health professionals and researchers across the globe, from every setting. In particular enabling individuals facing the challenges of diseases of poverty and in the most resource-poor settings to develop scientific, management and leadership skills to tackle these diseases.
The course is based on the Essential Curriculum for Health Research which was developed in partnership with the World Health Organisation and based on a study that involved over 7,000 participants. This makes it the first of its kind where all the component steps identified to undertake quality, practical and appropriate health research studies are covered; making it relevant for research into any disease, in all types of studies and in any setting.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research aims to:
In doing so, the postgraduate diploma will support progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) notably SDG 3.B to ‘support the research and development of vaccines and medicines for the communicable and non-communicable diseases that primarily affect developing countries’; SDG 3.C to ‘substantially increase…development, training and retention of the health workforce in developing countries’ and SDG 3.D to ‘strengthen the capacity of all countries, particularly developing countries, for early warning, risk reduction and management of national and global health risks’.
Professor Trudie Lang, Head of The Global Health Network, University of Oxford says: “ I’m delighted at the launch of the Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research. We have created this course to help address the global disparities in health research by teaching the skills needed to run studies in every healthcare setting. An ideal student could be a highly experienced nurse working in a large public hospital in Bangladesh or Ethiopia, a laboratory scientist in Peru, or members of national and international funding and ethics committees, or those working in regulatory bodies. I’m also very proud that this will be Oxford’s first qualification where travelling to Oxford is not required and that 30% of our intake will be funded places - this is truly transformational and brings true global and diverse access to a qualification from the University of Oxford .”
Professor Gavin Screaton, Head of Medical Sciences Division, University of Oxford says: “ This is a truly exciting moment for the Medical Sciences community at Oxford and across the globe. It is impossible to predict where and when the next global health crisis will emerge so it’s critical that we continue to build the pool of exceptional researchers in every healthcare setting who can become valued contributors to the global research community, while also delivering impact within their local setting. The Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research will do just that for thousands of talented individuals who otherwise would not have that opportunity.”
Professor Martin Williams, Pro Vice Chancellor of Education, University of Oxford says: “ The launch of the Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research shows that Oxford continues to be at the forefront of meeting the challenges of widening access head-on. Alongside the many outreach programmes we run in the UK and overseas, it is another excellent example of our commitment to ensuring talented students around the world can access Oxford’s world-leading teaching and expertise, without financial concerns acting as a barrier.”
The application deadline for the next academic year is Friday 9 December, 2022.
