IELTS Speaking Part 3: Technology Questions and Model Answer

Technology is a popular topic in speaking part 3. Below are some common questions with a model answer underneath.

  • What modern technological devices are most common in your country?
  • Do you think modern technology is useful?
  • Do you think people rely too much on technology?
  • Do you think men and women view technological devices differently?
  • Why do you think people spend so much money buying the latest devices?

Model Answer

  • Question: Do you think men and women view technological devices differently?
  • Answer: Yes, I do. For starters, men are usually more obsessed with gadgets. They are almost like children with the way they want to play with the latest gizmos and learn all their new functions. They are constantly fiddling around with their new toys. I also think that gadgets are a kind of ego for men. I mean they often compare their new toys with each other to see who has the best one. Women, on the other hand, are more down to earth and see devices more rationally as a means to communicate with others or to perform a particular function. Of course, this is pretty stereotyped but it seems to hold true for most men and women I know.

Useful Expressions

  • fiddling around with something = playing with something
  • down to earth = realistic, practical
  • stereotyped = putting people into a group or categorising them not based on fact
Note:  As you can see this model answer is from a woman’s perspective, if you would like to give a sample answer from a man’s perspective, please post it in the comments box. Feel free to post your answers to other questions as well.

My Answer- Yes, I do. In my observation I found that mens are easily attracted to latest gadget nd gizmos and always in a hurry to deep dive in its technicality. On the other hand, women hardly get fascinated with these tech toys untill they need it as a necessity.

Gracious. Just thinking about that is making me perspire slightly.

Yesterday was my speaking test and i am not sure how it went. I missed last cue question as my time was over but i was speaking continuously and gave all other answers but i felt the time was very less for each question to answer, So, does it affect my score as i missed one question ?

There are no questions on the cue card – only prompts which you can use or not use as you wish. It does not affect your score whether you cover them all or not.

' src=

Liz,thanks for wonderful videos and information .we practise in front of whole class and I get stuck during cue card topics.ai get anxious .what I should do

Practising in front of the class is a good way to test yourself, but you also need to practise more on your own. You need to review ALL comment topics and ALL recent topics for part 2. The examiner is not interested in you sticking only to the prompts – you need to expand further. If the topic is about “a recent holiday” – when you went, how you got there, what you did and why you liked it, you need to add: who went with you, why you choose that place, describe people there, describe buildings & countryside, compare with another place, how long you stayed, how long the journey was to arrive there, what kind of people would enjoy such a place, would you go in the future, your future holiday plans (where, when etc). As you see, it is the planning and techniques for adding more that will help you. The more you have to say (the more types of language – descriptions, comparisons, future forms, past memories etc), the less nervous you will be. I hope this helps. All the best Liz

Hello Liz, This is Arif from Bangladesh.Could you please record the answer with your voice which will help to learn pronunciation? Thanks

There are plenty of audios to listen and learn from on the listening page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-listening/ . At some point, I will add more audios to the speaking pages.

There is hardly any difference the way men and women look at technological devices these days. Both of them use the devices the same way, whether it is a smartphome which they keep fiddling around or it is a computer except that women are often also engaged in altogether different devices like washing machines and microwave etc which men hardly ever use.

' src=

thanku so much for providing a best questions

' src=

Best teacher

' src=

Osem. These questions are really helpful. And your vocabulary are incredible. I learn so many essay but i never understand vocab.but in your essay i understand all words. Thax

' src=

Yes, I do. Mens always have curosity for the new gadgets and they are always eager to explore those technologies and to use them. For them it is a obsession and they are always wantedto do show-off with others in order to show their status high. While women’s are view are little different from those of men’s, they are happy to use technologies for their own entertainment purpose only like cameras for pictures, and movies or social media.

' src=

Attempting to answer your question Liz, in Men’s perspective:

I strongly feel that men tend to love the gadgets and will always look forward to update the gadget with the next version of it. On the other hand women give more importance towards the appearance of the gadgets while Men think deeper within the device with its functionalities.

I like your ideas and the way you express them. Well done 🙂 You’re using the vocabulary very well.

' src=

Men fondness their gadgets, they are feel sense freedom, sense power, lure woman , and ego_booster, and others, this some feeling when man use their gadgets, on the other hand the women prefre use gadgets for doing something down on the earth such as communication with their freinds so for finding some vider about cooking and others.

Hi liz. Bee here and i am taking my ielts exams soon. But the problem is that i am not very good in english my speaking skill is poor and in writing i have some kind of tenses problem.my because of the shortage of time i need my ielts as soon as possible so kindly plz tell me is it possible to prepare with in two weeks for test 😖😖plzzz tell me i am so upset

Don’t worry about your level of English. You can’t change that in two weeks. Instead start learning skills for IELTS and ideas for topics. See the main ielts pages on this blog: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-speaking-free-lessons-essential-tips/ https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-2/ The other pages are accessed through the red nav bar at the top of each page.

Hi Liz. I am a bit nervous. Even a speaker who are exposed much to the challenges of speaking, even in the large audience, like Naaz could not reach the highest score, so I doubt the objectivity an the accuracy in the way candidates are judged. I just mean that is IELTS speaking test so hard that it requires us not only the fluency, LR, grammar and pronunciation but also the mastery of speaking? I also doubt even the native speaker could ever reach band 9.0.

You will find students with 8.5 and 9 in speaking on this page: https://ieltsliz.com/post-your-ielts-test-results/

My husband got his scores today and he scored a 9. And it’s because he listened to the videos on writing and speaking that Liz has put up. Last time he scored a 8. This time after going her videos he understood what mistakes he had made the last time. Thank you Liz.

That’s fantastic! Hats off to your husband for such a great score 🙂

Am going to take up the ukvi ielts next week .I hope your lessons help me to secure good scores .Am very glad to know about this site before my exam At least

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Technology

01/02/2023 04:37 PM

General Rules:

technology essay ielts speaking

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer., talk about yourself. this part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person)..

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Vocabulary related to the topic

Sentence starters and linking words, idioms and phrases, business phrases, is there any technology you don't like.

Well, I dont have any special feelings for technology. I would avoid using some of them though. For example, I would avoid using too many kitchen gadgets . I prefer traditional , manual chopping and preparing . There are so many machines for the kitchen these days, like all sorts of ovens , kitchen robots , friers , pancake-makers , and so on. In my opinion , they are absolutely unnecessary .

My Personal Answer:

What electronic devices have you bought lately?

Is there any technology you want to buy, is technology important in your life.

Well , as a young person , I definitely can't live without my mobile phone and social media in general. It's a little scary to think about it, but our generation really needs to be online . And so I tend to use my phone and computer as well, as much as possible every day.

Do you think there are trends in technology today compared to when you were young?

How do you think technology will change in the future.

IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: TECHNOLOGY [ANSWERS]

I believe I use my smartphone more than my computer because it’s more convenient. I can reply to emails very easily and quickly, I can give a call to my clients and my co-workers, and I can do online banking with the use of applications. Well, I only use my computer if I need to type some documents and print them. Other than that, I rely (depend) on using my smartphone.

Some believe technology has made our lives too complex and the solution is to lead a simpler life without technology. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Real Past IELTS Tests

Many are of the opinion that technology has done more harm than good and we ought to simplify in order to lead more fulfilling lives. I agree that technology has its drawbacks but I think turning away from technology is impractical.

The main reason that technology has complicated life for people today is that it has made people perpetually available. In the past, a worker might work a 9 to 5 then come home to spend time with their family, have dinner and enjoy their private life. That simplicity is largely no longer the case. Once work ends, you can still get email notifications and phone calls from managers or co-workers. The end result is that you can never be fully present in the moment because work always threatens to pull you back.

Although life has become more complicated and this is a negative development, shutting yourself off from technology would only serve to isolate people from the world. If you want to stay in touch with friends and know about events in your area, it is essential to have a phone. You can use Facebook Messenger to cheaply chat with individuals or make group plans. Email is an indispensable element of nearly every job. Without it, you are filtering out quality jobs and predetermining manual work as your vocation.

In conclusion, although technology has hurt people, turning away from it is not feasible today without making drastic sacrifices. Instead, people ought to seek ways to compartmentalise technology in order to live happier, more satisfying lives.

  • Begin to develop it. I use a hypothetical example here.
  • Vary up your long and short sentences for effect.
  • Be specific – meniote the notifications, phone calls, etc.
  • State the result to finish the paragraph.

IELTS Student Sample Corrections

The success ful in technological development has created a more complicated life for people and in order to solve this issue and it is thought [A1]  to live without the appearance of technology. In my opinion, I hold a balanced view in this issue. [A2]

Living without technology could be the best solution to solve the complexity of our lives, especially for elderly or technophobes. The main reason is because in the present we are surrounded by technological devices, however, old people and those who do not want to adopt the great development of this will find it really hard to use, resulting in creating harder and more complex life for them. [A3]   It can easily be seen that people aged 60 or above and technophobes will prefer using physical keyboard phones such as Nokia 550 rather than using state-of-the-art and newest smartphones like iPhone X or Note 8. [A4]

However, without the need of technology, our lives could be quite hard in many situations that required devices. The main reason because by using smart devices, it helps to reduce the number of tasks needed, instead, it now becomes the responsibility of technological devices, these jobs will be done by machines, hence, increasing people’s life quality. In the past, women spent hours for household tasks, such as sweeping the floors and cooking meals for the whole family, now, these tasks are given to floor-sweeping robots and automated cookers, meaning they will have more time for leisure and their beloved. [A5]

In conclusion, although living a life without technology could be true to solve the complicated lives in today’s world, using automated machines will handle many tasks that in the past humans needed to involve in. [A6]

[A1] Many are of the opinion that we should try to…

[A2] Not a good idea to do this! It asks to the extent you agree/disagree – make it clear that you only partly agree!

[A3] Way too vague! We already know this – describe how it is harder or more complex!

[A4] This is confusing because this isn’t an argument about technology v no technology it is old v new technology so it is irrelevant….

[A5] Good paragraph in general with a clear main idea and enough support. I’m not sure about the example though because people still do household chores and cook meals… Those tasks have become EASIER – that would be a better argument.

[A6] There is no position in this essay! Just saying ‘I hold a balanced view’ is an automatic 5 for Task Achievement regardless of everything else…

IELTS Speaking Part 1 Questions on Computer with Sample Answers

1 when do you use a computer, sample answer 1 .

I mainly use a computer for my college assignments, as there are many tasks that require tools best suited for computers, such as Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. These programs are essential for creating well-aligned and professional documents. Additionally, I use my computer to study for my courses and access online resources.

Sample Answer 2

I am a gamer, so I spend most of my time using my computer for playing games. A big screen and a good processor are crucial for some games to run smoothly. I also have a community of gamers, and we often join calls to play together, which makes the experience more enjoyable.

Sample Answer 3

I use my computer for my official purposes as a web developer. Many essential tools and applications crucial for development are only compatible with computers, making them indispensable in my profession. Additionally, I utilize my computer for studying for the IELTS through online classes and resources, benefiting from their convenience and accessibility.

2 Do you use computers very much?

Given that my work is office-based, I spend the majority of my time on the computer. It’s essential, as all my tasks are computer-dependent, leaving me with no alternative. Moreover, computers excel in running various software, making them indispensable for office work.

With my full-time office job, where all tasks are managed on the computer, and my subsequent online studying through the same medium, it’s safe to say that I am deeply immersed in computer usage throughout the day. It serves as the central hub for managing both my professional responsibilities and educational pursuits, encapsulating nearly all aspects of my daily life.

While I do use computers, it’s not as frequent as one might expect. My usage is primarily confined to studying, particularly when attending classes or taking mock tests for the IELTS. Once these sessions conclude, I prefer turning to physical books for question-solving. There’s a certain sense of accomplishment derived from this tactile approach that I find appealing.

3 How did you learn to use a computer?

As a child, my father gifted me a new computer, which became my gateway to exploration and learning. Initially, I spent hours playing games and creating paintings on it. With my father’s guidance, I delved into using MS Word, playing games, and editing images. This sparked my curiosity, leading me to independently explore and acquire various skills using the computer.

During my school years, I had the opportunity to learn computer skills as part of the curriculum. Our school offered classes where we learned the basics of operating systems, word processing, and internet browsing. These lessons laid the foundation for my computer literacy. Additionally, I practiced and enhanced my skills both at school and at home. Through hands-on experience and experimentation, I became proficient in using various software.

From an early age, computers have been integral to my life. Growing up in a digital world, I was naturally drawn to technology. I spent hours at home exploring various programs and functionalities. Additionally, my school provided computer classes, covering basic to advanced skills. These experiences, along with my curiosity and eagerness to learn, significantly shaped my computer proficiency from childhood onward.

4 What was your impression when you used a computer for the first time?

Common IELTS Topics: Technology

Posted by David S. Wills | Nov 13, 2017 | IELTS Tips , Listening , Reading , Speaking , Writing | 2

Common IELTS Topics: Technology

Technology is one of the most common IELTS topics because it can come up in any part of the exam. Furthermore, technology is a part of our daily lives and thus an absolutely necessary topic in which to be fluent. So, let’s look at how it may come up in the IELTS exam and what technology vocabulary we need to learn.

Technology in IELTS Speaking

There are lots of possible questions you may be asked about technology in the IELTS speaking exam. Here are some.

  • How often do you use the Internet?
  • How much time do you spend using a computer at work or at home?
  • Do you enjoy using technology?
  • Do you own a computer?
  • What do you mainly use a computer for?
  • Do you use the Internet for your studies?
  • Has the internet made your job / studies easier?
  • Have you ever taken a course to improve your computer skills?
  • Do you use any gadgets on a daily basis?
  • Which device do you prefer to use for browsing the internet?

You may be asked to describe a technology you often use or a kind of gadget. In one surprising cue card, candidates were asked to describe a time when they couldn’t use a phone! Here’s my sample answer for that:

  • What kind of technological developments have made the biggest impact on our lives?
  • Do you think people rely too much on modern technology?
  • Do you think we need to know much about computers?
  • How do computers affect our everyday life?
  • Do you agree that some people use technology for communication too much?
  • Do computers make it much easier to study?
  • Would you agree that the rapid development of digital technology has had a positive impact on the world of work?
  • What is the most important piece of technology in our lives?
  • How effective is the use of computers in the classroom?
  • Do you think that the rate of technological expansion will slow down in the years to come?
  • What do you think are the important things people need to learn when they start using computers?
  • Do you think men and women view technological devices differently?

Answering any of these questions gives you a chance to show off your technology vocabulary, which we shall look at in the next section.

Technology Vocabulary

It is really important that IELTS candidates know a lot of technology vocabulary. However, this is where textbooks often fail us. The vocabulary used to describe technology changes almost as quickly as technology itself!

Case in point: A few years ago, I was teaching at a university in China and all the textbooks had things like:

  • cassette tape
  • surfing the net

However, this is all really old fashioned! Whilst it might be useful to know these words and phrases, they are unlikely to be things you will talk about in the IELTS speaking test. After all, some of these are practically ancient by now.

technology essay ielts speaking

It’s important then to keep on top of relatively new developments. you don’t need to be an expert in computer studies or anything, but you should know some common terms for talking about technology in daily life:

  • instant messaging

You should be able to talk about social media, using the most common words and phrases there:

  • friend/unfriend

All of these will help you to give better answers when talking about technology or technology-related subjects in your IELTS speaking test.

Here’s a whole video about technology vocabulary:

Technology in IELTS Writing

Technology could appear in either part of the IELTS writing exam but it is more likely to come up in task 2. Here are some example questions:

Nowadays the way many people interact with each other has changed because of technology. In what ways has technology affected the types of relationships that people make? Has this been a positive or negative development? * When a country develops its technology, the traditional skills and ways of life die out. It is pointless to try and keep them alive. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? * Some people argue that technological inventions, such as smartphones, are making people less socially active. Do you agree or disagree?

Be careful when answering these questions. Much of the technology vocabulary you learn online (including the video above) is a bit informal. In particular, verbs relating to social media can be quite inappropriate for a formal essay. It is not bad English, but you may find yourself marked down for not using formal enough language.

Technology for IELTS Listening

Of course, it is very possible that your IELTS listening exam could contain information about technology. It is, however, unlikely to be very specialised and you would only need to know some quite basic language. Here are some examples of IELTS technology topics in the listening exam .

Technology for IELTS Reading

Technology is an incredibly common topic in the reading exam. Here, a good vocabulary for technology would definitely come in handy.

Here are some example tests you can see on other websites:

  • Technology & Crime
  • Hard Disk Technology
  • Is Science Dangerous?
  • Art & Technology

It is definitely worth learning technology vocabulary. Technology is such a big part of our daily lives that there’s a good chance it will feature in your IELTS exam.

It’s a broad subject. Here are some common areas that appear regularly:

  • How and when you use a computer
  • Your favourite websites
  • What you use the internet for
  • How technology has impacted on education
  • Technology in the workplace
  • Modern devices and gadgets

There are many other things you could be asked about, as you’ll discover on this page. Learning and being able to use a wide range of technology vocabulary will enable you to answer questions effectively and coherently and earn yourself high marks.

You may be asked to talk about technology related topics or write about them, and technology, computers or the internet could also be the topic of your reading or listening tests.

technology essay ielts speaking

To help you prepare for your exam, I've included four things on this page:

  • IELTS-style questions on the topic of technology
  • Sample answers
  • A list of common technology vocabulary  with definitions & sample sentences
  • Links to online reading and listening resources

You’ll find PDF downloads of both the questions and sample answers and the technology vocabulary list at the bottom of the respective sections.

The questions relate to the Speaking test because this part of the exam offers the broadest range of possible questions on the topic of technology. They give the best opportunity for me to demonstrate the vocabulary and for you to practise using it.

I’ve included IELTS-style questions and answers for all three parts of the Speaking test. I've highlighted key words and phrases in  bold .

You'll find these words and phrases, and many others, in the vocabulary list beneath. The list also includes explanations and sample sentences and there’s an audio to listen to the pronunciation.

The technology vocabulary list contains words and phrases relevant to all parts of the IELTS exam.

Finally, at the bottom of the page I've added links to topical articles, short videos and podcasts that will help you to improve both your technology vocabulary and your reading and listening skills.

Here’s something to think about as you work through this page:

Learning vocabulary for IELTS doesn’t just involve learning new words and phrases, it’s also about how you use vocabulary to develop good answers.

IELTS-Style Speaking Test Questions and Answers

Common technology vocabulary is highlighted in  bold .

1)   How often do you use a computer and for what purpose?

I use a computer every day, mostly for my work. I’m a copywriter so my job involves a lot of word processing . In my leisure time, I love to connect with my friends and family back home on social media .

2)   Have you ever taken a course to improve your computer skills?

I’ve never taken a proper course like at a college but did once pay someone to teach me how to use some specific software I needed for my business. Mostly, I’ve learnt by trial and error and watching YouTube videos. I’m no computer buff but I can do everything I need to.

3)   Which device do you prefer to use for browsing the internet?

I’d sooner use my laptop to surf the internet as you can see so much more on the large screen than on a smaller device . If my laptop is switch off I tend to browse on my iPad to saving booting up the computer.

4)   Do you enjoy using the internet?

I find it exciting using the internet because I love to learn new things. These days you can find out almost anything online so computers have been a real game changer for people like me who enjoy discovering new information.

5)  What sorts of things do you buy online?

The items I buy most often online are books, sometimes e-books that I read on my Kindle. I also browse the internet when I need a new gadget to help me develop my website , such as the microphone I bought the other day.

technology essay ielts speaking

Describe an item of technology you have that is very important.

You should say:

  • what the technology is
  • when you got it
  • how often you use it

and say how different your daily life would be without it.

I have several electronic devices that I use on a daily basis but the one I’m going to describe is my mobile phone.

I’m never the quickest to adopt new technology and all my friends had them long before I did. I eventually bought one back in 1999 after my dad had a stroke and was rushed into hospital. I needed to be in constant contact with my family during this difficult time so I had to join them in owning a mobile.

I now have an iPhone and keep it with me at all times in case of emergencies but mainly use it for texting and keeping in touch with my rowing club friends via WhatsApp. The phone is so high tech that, not being a techie , I only understand and use a few of the functions. It’s incredible what it can do though, and every now and then I discover something new about it. In fact, this happened just the other day when I was out walking my dog.

I often get ideas for my work when I’m out and about and usually carry a notebook and pen to jot them down before I forget them. If I forget to take the notebook, I type short notes on my iPhone to remind me of my thoughts. Then last week, I notice a microphone icon and thought I’d try recording my ideas to play back later.

When I tried this, I found that my mobile actually types out the words as I say them. I was amazed and over the moon as I’d discovered a quicker and easier way to make notes. It saves me lots of time and means that I never lose a good idea. I can record as I’m walking along rather than having to stop and write things down, so my dog’s happier too as he used to get fed up with me stopping all the time.

It’s quite incredible the advances in technology since I bought that first mobile all those years ago. Back then you could just make calls and send texts. Having started as a reluctant user, I now consider my mobile an indispensable part of my life and wouldn’t be without it. My life wouldn’t actually be very different if I didn’t have it as I’m not addicted to the internet or social media like many people. However, I do feel a sense of security having one and it also gives me peace of mind knowing that any of my family can contact me if they have a problem.

technology essay ielts speaking

1)  Do you think most electronic devices are user-friendly?

For the most part, I’d say that they are once you’ve learnt how to use them. The problem for me is always getting started. I’m a bit of a technophobe and don’t find it easy to understand new technology . You rarely get a written instruction manual with a new device and the help is generally online . You often have to really search for what you need.

Also, technology advances so quickly that as soon as you’ve mastered the device, the software is upgraded and you have to learn new stuff to be able to use it.

I really envy young people today as they are natural techies . They seem to know how to operate electronic devices without even being shown. I certainly think that many people of the older generation would say that modern electronic gadgets are not user-friendly .

2)  Do you think parents should control what internet sites their teenagers use?

Internet safety is a huge concern for parents these days. Computers and the internet have so many benefits for young people, for their education and for staying connected with friends and family, but there are some unpleasant people online who target children on social media and trick them into building harmful relationships.

Teenagers are particularly vulnerable because they have a lot of freedom as to who they connect with and they can be too trusting. Most own mobile devices so can go online when they’re away from home and their parents can’t see what websites or social media platforms they’re browsing . Many youngsters are pressured into posting pictures of themselves naked or lured into sexual relationships, which is just awful.

I do think that parents should monitor what internet sites their teenagers use, although this is difficult because of this freedom their kids have and how easy it is to get online. On laptops and PCs there are settings for limiting access to parts of the internet , which parents should activate. I’m not sure if you can do this on mobile devices .

Perhaps the best things parents can do is to discuss internet safety with their children and make them aware of the dangers they could face online .

3)  Could you suggest reasons why some people are deciding to reduce their use of technology?

Many people’s whole lives are controlled by technology , especially the internet . With so many different devices available and the number of wifi hotspots increasing all the time, people can surf the internet anytime they want to. It’s easy to waste hours browsing or posting trivia on social media . This is often for no real purpose but simply because people are addicted to it. Everywhere you go you see people tapping away on their mobile phones rather than engaging with the people around them.

I think some people realise that they’re slaves to technology and have made a conscious decision to cut down on their use of the internet and their mobiles in particular. It’s hard to relax with emails, social media posts and texts pinging at you all the time. There’s more understanding these days of mindfulness and the need to regularly step back from our frantic, stressful lives. Reducing the use of our electronic devices can certainly help a great deal with this and I believe this is many people’s motivation for doing so.

nuclear power essay ielts

Nuclear Power Essay IELTS Sample Answer

Nuclear power is a very debated topic in every convention and has always been questioned for the bad it does rather than its good. In my opinion, nuclear power needs to be used, and the user should also be controlled and hedged with renewable energy sources as they are the only viable solution. Nuclear plants currently provide 11% of the world’s electricity. With an ever-increasing demand for electricity being seen everywhere and the fossil fuels reducing each day, it is now more important than ever that major decisions should be made. In the upcoming decades, energy consumption will only increase and meet the rising demand; nuclear power plants will be required as they are the best source of traditional energy-producing sources. Although nuclear power plants are required, it is also necessary to gradually push renewable energy sources and promote them to create a sustainable future for future generations. Nuclear power plants’ waste disposal and radioactivity are the concerning factors that have been the hot topic of most debates at conventions and meetings. In addition to that, a single misuse of this tremendous power can result in the disruption of life for all mankind. Striking a balance between the two will be crucial in the coming time as global warming and the energy crisis are on a constant rise. If nothing is done in the near time, countries could get submerged underwater within the coming decades, and the entire world will have to fight for survival.

Writing Task 2

The writing section of the IELTS exam consists of two sections. Writing task 2 is an essay writing task that requires deep thinking and coherence. This task will be our focus for this blog, as the rules and guidelines of the IELTS exam can be confusing for students appearing for the first time. Writing task 2 has the subsequent guidelines:

  • The essay should have a minimum of 250 words. An essay written in less than 250 words will be penalised and negatively marked. There is no penalty for writing a longer essay, but it will cause you to stray off-topic and waste time.
  • 40 minutes is a good enough time to complete this task and will leave you with time to recheck your answer.
  • The essay’s contents should be written with perfect grammar and solely focused on the topic.
  • You can be penalised if you stray off-topic while writing your essay. All the sentences must be related and formed to provide a clear view and information.
  • The content must be well structured to fetch the best results and have proper cohesion between the sentences.
  • The tone of your answer must be academic or semi-formal and should discuss the given topic at length and focus on proper and sophisticated language.
  • Using bullet points and notes is not allowed in the IELTS exam . The real answer must be written together and broken into paragraphs to better examine your writing style and structure.

Structure of Essay in Writing Task 2

The structure of the essay in writing task 2 is the base of your essay, and a clear idea of the structure will make it much easier for you to finish the essay on time. The structure of the essay can be broken down in the following way:

  • First Paragraph
  • Second Paragraph
  • Third Paragraph
  • Fourth Paragraph

The first paragraph of your essay should provide a small introduction to the topic and provide an opinion of yours about what side you are on about the topic. The first paragraph should be minimal and to the point. A clear and concise introduction leaves a good impression on the examiner. The second paragraph should begin with your stance on the topic. The first sentence should provide clarity on your stance. The second sentence should build on that idea and delve deeper into the specifics. The next sentences are suitable for providing an example and developing it in detail. You can make up research studies and quote them in your essay to support your point. At the end of the paragraph, end with a statement that sums up the overall idea of the paragraph and supports the idea you started with. The third paragraph is very similar in structure to the second paragraph. The main objective of this paragraph is to provide either the opposite view of the topic or discuss new ideas that touch on a different perspective of the topic but ultimately support your opinion. The structuring is the same as in the second paragraph, with minute changes. The fourth paragraph is the conclusion of your essay and, just like the introduction, should be minimal. Summing up your essay with a statement supporting your opinion and overall idea is best advised.

Frequently asked questions, 1. what are the pros and cons of nuclear power.

Ans: Nuclear energy is a widely used method of production of electricity. The benefits of nuclear technology and the main advantages of nuclear power are: a. No production of harmful gases that cause air pollution b. Clean source of energy c. Low cost of fuel d. Long-life once constructed e. A massive amount of energy produced f. Unlike most energy production methods, nuclear energy does not contribute to the increase in global warming

Disadvantages: a. Very high cost of construction of the facility. b. Waste produced is very toxic and requires proper and safe disposal, which is costly. c. If any accident happens, it can have a major impact on everyone and can be devastating. d. Mining of uranium 235, which is nuclear fuel, is very expensive.

2. Does Japan have a plan for dealing with its own nuclear waste problem?

Ans: As per the latest news and research, Japan does not have a proper nuclear waste dumping structure even after the Fukushima disaster in 2011. The Fukushima disaster was caused by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in 2011 and caused meltdowns and hydrogen explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Reactor. It was the worst recorded nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. Japan is said to have enough nuclear waste to create nuclear arsenals. In April 2021, Japan declared they would be dumping 1.2 million tonnes of nuclear waste into the sea. This is the same Japan that called the 1993 ocean dumping by Russia “extremely regrettable.” The discharges are bound to begin by 2023, and various legal proceedings and protests have been going on inside Japan against this inhuman decision that would destroy marine life.

3. How many countries have nuclear power plants?

Ans : Currently, 32 countries in the world possess nuclear power plants within their boundaries.

4. Why do people oppose nuclear power?

Ans: Opposition to nuclear power has been a long-standing issue. It is backed by a variety of reasons which are as follows:Nuclear waste is hard to dispose of, and improper disposal affects the radioactivity levels and can disrupt the normal life of people as well as animals. Nuclear technology is another concern of people as the usage of nuclear power plants leads to deeper research into the nuclear field. In today’s world, anything can be weaponised, and the threat of nuclear weapons is one of the drawbacks of nuclear power. This brings the threat of nuclear war and disruption of world peace. Any attack on nuclear power plants by terrorist organisations can result in a massive explosion that can disrupt and destroy human life and increase radioactivity to alarming levels around the site of the explosion.

5. What is the best way to dispose of nuclear waste?

Ans: Nuclear waste needs to be disposed of properly to prevent radioactive issues in the environment. The best methods to dispose of nuclear waste are as follows: a. Incineration : Radioactive waste can be incinerated in large scale incinerators with low production of waste. b. Deep burial: Nuclear waste can be buried deep into the ground as the radioactivity of nuclear waste wears off over time. This method is used for waste that is highly radioactive and will take a longer time to lose its radioactivity. c. Storage: Nuclear waste with low radioactivity is stored by some countries in storage. This is because their radioactive decay takes lesser time and can be disposed of safely once the radiation wears off.

6. Is it possible to produce electricity without using fossil fuels?

Ans: At the moment, 11% of the world’s electricity is produced by nuclear power plants alone. Replacing fossil fuel-based energy with renewable needs to be done gradually and properly. Renewable energy sources such as solar, hydro, and wind will have to be promoted and pushed to create a sustainable future. Renewable energy sources provide cheap energy, do not use up natural resources and fossil fuels and are much cheaper to construct than a nuclear power station.
