Essay writing tips: What you need to do The essay-writing process is typically divided into different parts and phases. For one, there is the research phase, the writing phase, and the checking phase. We’ll talk about some tips that you can follow during research, the actual writing, and so on. 1. Pick the right sources for your research The first step in the process is research. And incidentally, it is also the most important. If you take proper care during the research, you can improve the overall quality of your essay. Of the many things that you have to do for good research, the first thing is to find the right sources for it. The broad criterion that you can set to find “good” sources is to look for the ones that are generally hailed as reliable and authoritative. Think of places like the New York Times website or Forbes. Since we’re talking about writing essays, however, some sources that you can consider using are as follows: 1. Google Scholar – a good place to find academic papers on various topics 2. ResearchGate – pretty much performs the same function as G Scholar 3. JSTOR – same thing once again And so on. Depending on the type of essay you’re writing and the institution you’re associated with, there may be some additional instructions and guidelines that you may have to follow about the research sources. Some institutes may have certain restrictions in place about some research sources, such as Wikipedia, etc. If there are any such restrictions in place, you should take them into consideration before deciding on the sources. 2. Don’t copy-paste from the sources …because that’s plagiarism. Plagiarism is something akin to a disease in academics. Its presence in your essay will only warrant the rejection of the latter. Whenever taking information, you should note down the citation details of the sources. Then you should create and add the citations whenever adding the borrowed information. Keep the essay organized Proper content organization can do wonders for the quality of your essay. An organized essay can look better on the eyes and be generally more readable. Here is what you should do to make your essay organized: 1. Split up the contents using headings and sub-headings 2. Follow a proper progression for the headings, sub-headings and section-headings in the typical cascading format…something that goes like this a. Heading i. Sub-heading 1. Section heading 3. Use bullets to convey information in a more readable way. Things like steps for a process and multiple items are better off written in the form of lists rather than a paragraph. 4. Keep your wording clear Just as proper organization can help with the overall quality and readability of your essay, the same goes for the choice of words you use. Using needlessly difficult words isn’t recommended in any type of content, be it an essay or anything else. Oftentimes, using difficult words can also get you confused about what you want to write. For example, a person describing the inordinate craving for people to utilize recondite terminology with unprecedented fervor…may lose what they’re trying to say in the first place. Of course, other than this, the main benefit of using easy words is that the essay becomes more readable for the reader – who, in this case, can be the teacher or the instructor. To bring them together in the form of a list, here are some tips that you can follow to make your wording easy and simple. 1. Firstly, take care not to use any words that you may think are alien to normal conversation. 2. If the situation demands the use of a difficult word, be sure to address and explain it for the ease of your reader(s). 3. Once you are done writing the draft of your essay, you should give it a couple of thorough reads and re-reads. If you come across any difficult words that you may have used without realizing it, you can fix them then. Another good way to go about the last step there is to use a paraphrasing tool. In other words, if there are some difficult words in your essay and you can’t figure out how to make them more readable, you can try rephrasing those particular parts with the help of a paraphrasing tool. Should you choose a high-quality one, you will be able to get smart results without much need for editing, etc. 5. Find and remove plagiarism Another important thing that you have to do during the essay-writing process is find and remove plagiarism from the content. We don’t need to go on about the harms and consequences of plagiarism. Suffice it to understand that it is one of the worst things that can occur in your academic write-ups. They can get you a low grade, put you in trouble with your teachers and even get you in legal trouble if the offense is serious enough. We mentioned paraphrasing above as a way to remedy bad readability. Incidentally, it is a good fix that you can use for plagiarism as well. In other words, you can paraphrase the content that you find to be plagiarized. After being paraphrased, the content will come back new and shining. Conclusion For the sake of brevity, we’re skipping some of the finer details. But we have outlined the main stuff, and you should be good as long as you follow them. Before we give this post the wrap, here are some other additional tips that you can follow to write a good essay. 1. Be sure to check for grammar and spelling errors before finalizing your essay 2. Be sure to add the citations and references properly (if needed) 3. Make sure there are no loose ends with the formatting, i.e., font size, margins, and the like 4. New Delhi: To mark the P.N. Panicker Book Reading Month (9 June to 19 July) and to guide readers during the monsoon reading season, Valley of Words (VoW) — a literature and arts festival — will announce its shortlist in eight categories.

These categories encompass fiction in English and Hindi, translations from various Indian languages — “Bhashas of Bharat” — into Hindi and English, as well as books for young adults and children in bilingual formats. This diverse offering caters to all ages and interests, helping readers find the perfect monsoon reads.

As is done every year, VoW has begun announcing its 2024 shortlist for translated fiction this week. VoW has long been a champion of translated works, recognising their importance with a dedicated category since the inception of the VoW Book Awards.

This year’s shortlist for the English Translation category features five novels translated from Gujarati, Hindi, Assamese, Tamil and Bengali. The selection of stories, ranging from social commentary and family sagas to coming-of-age journeys and contemporary issues, bridges the gap between languages and cultures, making Indian literature accessible to a wider audience.

From the poignant tale of a Parsi family, an Adivasi boy’s fight for upward mobility, to the struggles of a woman poet in the ruthless world of advertising, the shortlist promises a captivating exploration of the human experience. Readers can expect evocative narratives, thought-provoking themes, and a glimpse into the unique traditions of various Indian communities.

The much-awaited epic, Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD has made a record-breaking start at the ticket windows. According to the producers, Vyjayanthi Movies, the film made $23 million on the first day of its release - Thursday, June 27. The movie features Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and Deepika Padukone i n important roles.

Day One At Box Office

In Indian markets, the Hindi version of the film made more than $3 million opening while the combined figure for all languages in India stood at nearly $11 million. Apart from Hindi, Kalki 2898 AD has released in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. Nearly $7 million collections (out of the India gross of $11 million) came from telugu version of the film while the Tamil version scored slightly more than $3 million.

Apart from the lead actor Bachchan, Padukone, Prabhas, and Haasan, the new film also stars Vijay Deverakonda, Mrunal Thakur, Dulquer Salmaan, Anna Ben, and Brahmanandam in special roles.

Written by director Ashwin himself, Kalki 2898 AD takes inspiration from the Hindu mythological character Ashwatthama who needs to protect humanity some 6000 years after the legendary war of Mahabharat in India’s Kurukshetra.

Advance Bookings

The makers of Kalki 2898 AD had opened advance bookings for the film a few days ago and it managed to score big numbers. The Indian ticketing and entertainment platform BookMyShow alone registered a booking of 1.5 million tickets for the Bachchan-starrer. COO - Cinemas at BookMyShow Ashish Saksena says, "This tremendous response reflects the film’s widespread appeal and keen anticipation among diverse audiences. Audiences across the length and breadth of the country are demonstrating remarkable enthusiasm for all languages, with ticket sales for the Hindi version growing exponentially, and the Telugu version naturally leading the charts. Cities such as Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam, Chennai and Tirupati show significant interest, followed closely by Warangal, Vijayawada, Mumbai, Delhi-NCR and Pune, highlighting the film’s extensive geographic reach.”

Saksena also highlights how single-screens contributed to figures: “Kalki 2898 AD has garnered spectacular interest from audiences opting to watch the mass entertainer at single-screen theatres, contributing to a massive 60% of ticket sales on BookMyShow so far. With the film’s extensive reach encompassing diverse audience segments, including both multiplexes and widespread single-screen presence, the potential it holds knows no bounds. Close to 45% cinephiles have opted for 3D and IMAX formats of the film, gunning for the immersive big screen experience.”

“The buzz surrounding this sci-fi spectacle with a gripping futuristic narrative is fueled by a stellar ensemble of actors. High production values and cutting-edge special effects have further amplified expectations, positioning it as a landmark in Indian cinema.”

Given the initial buzz for the film, producer and film business analyst Girsh Johar also expected the Kalki 2898 AD to open around $20-23 million at the global box office.

What worked in favor

Critics and audiences alike have all praised the Hollywood-style dystopian sci-fi theme of Kalki 2898 AD . However, mixed reviews about the film suggests that the film lacks an emotional connect, unlike RRR or Bahubali . It falters in the department of the screenplay. Ashwin has managed to create a dystopian future using visuals that Indian audience has only seen in Hollywood films.

THE LANGUAGE PUZZLE: Piecing Together the Six-Million-Year Story of How Words Evolved , by Steven Mithen

If you stand on the rock of Edinburgh Castle on a clear day and look due north toward the Firth of Forth, you can make out the small island of Inchkeith, about three miles out to sea. It was to this island, in 1493, that James IV banished two infant children, with only a mute nurse for company, to be raised in silent isolation. The king hoped that, when the children came of age, this experiment would reveal the original, Edenic language of Adam and Eve, uncontaminated by modern chatter.

The results, let’s say, were inconclusive. An early historian, writing in Scots, offers contemporary gossip — “some sayis they spak goode hebrew” — before quickly disavowing any firm opinion on the matter.

This is just one of several near-identical language deprivation experiments reportedly carried out by various despotic rulers over the centuries. Many of these stories are probably apocryphal, but they point to an ongoing curiosity that is very real. Where did language first come from, and what was the first language like? These questions are addressed by archaeologist Steven Mithen in “The Language Puzzle.”

Speculation on the matter was so rife, and often so wild, that on March 8, 1866, the Société de Linguistique de Paris issued a set of statutes which notably declared that they would no longer enter into any communication concerning the origins of language. This ban has been credited with putting an ancient field of inquiry into hibernation for over a century — an exaggeration, perhaps, but one that carries a germ of truth.

Many scholars had come to realize that the question of how language had evolved was itself so inherently complex, and crossed so many of the specialist disciplines into which academia divides itself, that anyone claiming to have the answer was likely to be a quack.

Since the end of the last century, however, we have begun to see serious, multiple-component approaches to the topic that draw together evidence from different branches of learning. Mithen has a useful metaphor for the way in which the question must be tackled: The puzzle in his title is a jigsaw. The picture we are after, of language evolution, will only reveal itself if we place all the different pieces in the right configuration, bringing together evidence from linguistics, archaeology, anthropology, genetics, neuroscience, psychology and ethology (the science of animal behavior).
