Fieldwork Experience
Practicum Experience
The practicum is an integral component of clinical training. It provides a closely supervised clinical experience in which students use the knowledge obtained in the classroom to understand their clients and to develop skills in assessment, psychotherapy, and other discipline related areas. As such, the practicum serves to integrate the theoretical and practical aspects of the education of the professional psychologist. It allows students to become familiar with professional collaboration and consultation in a clinical setting.
All students are required to take six semester hours each of Basic and Intermediate Practica. The first three-semester practicum sequence is primarily devoted to training in psychological assessment. The second three-semester sequence is primarily devoted to psychotherapy.
Students are also required to take four semester hours of Advanced Practicum coursework. Advanced Practicum gives students the chance to focus more deeply on an area or population of particular interest, such as neuropsychology, children, or incarcerated persons.
Additionally, students participate in three years of organized, sequential, and well-supervised practicum experiences that increasingly expose them to the range of roles and responsibilities of a clinical psychologist.
The practicum requirements include:
Year 2: 600-hour basic practicum
Year 3: 600-hour intermediate practicum
Year 4: 600-hour advanced practicum
All students are required to complete an internship—consisting of a minimum of 2,000 hours of training over a 12 to 24-month period—following the completion of all course work, practica, and dissertation requirements. On internship, students integrate academic knowledge with clinical skills and demonstrate the effective and ethical use of these skills in clinical practice. Through intensive supervised training, students gain direct experience in applying their knowledge with a clinical population. The internship is a vital component of the educational experience and is never waived or transferred.
Additional Program Components
Comprehensive Examinations
Clinical Psy.D. students at our New Orleans location are required to pass two comprehensive exams, which evaluate the student’s knowledge of the theory, research, and practice of a chosen theory of intervention, as well as competency to practice that theory in an ethical and culturally sensitive manner.
Clinical Qualifying Exam (to progress to Intermediate Practicum)
Clinical Competency Exam (Written and Oral; administered as part of the Intermediate Practicum Seminar)
Dissertation
The dissertation is an essential aspect of a student’s academic experience. The dissertation affords students the opportunity to spend two years independently researching an issue of professional interest. As part of the dissertation, students conduct an exhaustive literature review, formulate hypotheses or questions to be answered, and create and execute a method to investigate.

Practical implications, the APA’s guidelines for multicultural competency, and some multicultural therapy approaches will be presented.

Our role as psychologists in assisting those in need and the importance of social activism will be explored. Practical implications for successful therapy with diverse individuals will be discussed. The Master of Science (M.S.) in Psychology provides foundational training in the science of psychology and prepares you for entry into doctoral programs in a variety of disciplines like clinical, developmental, social, and cognitive psychology.
Through our master’s program, we strive to promote the study of psychology as a science, as a profession, and as a means of promoting human welfare.
Our coursework will provide an advanced education in psychological science and will help you become a competitive candidate for doctoral-level training programs in both applied psychology—clinical or counseling, for example—and experimental psychology, including cognitive and developmental psychology. Our master's in psychology program provides foundational training in core areas of psychology, including history of psychology, professional ethics, research design and analysis, and exposes you to key content areas in psychology: developmental, cognitive, physiological, and social.
Our program also provides you the flexibility to design a sequence of coursework best suited to you future academic and career aspirations. Elective coursework options include assessment, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and psychopathology. The psychology master's degree is not intended for students seeking master's-level professional licensure.
As a master’s in psychology student, you must complete a thesis under the supervision of a graduate faculty member. Faculty members have expertise in clinical, cognitive, counseling, cross-cultural, developmental, educational, physiological, and social psychology, as well as specialties in behavior analysis and health. We encourage you to contact the faculty member under whom you would like to work during your time in our department.
You may elect to complete a practicum experience, which involves training and experience in providing professional psychological services to members of the community. Doing a practicum as part of your master’s-level training will help you decide if a career involving counseling or therapy is right for you, and will provide hands-on skills that you can build on as you continue applied psychology training. You must meet prerequisites for practicum and be successfully evaluated before being admitted to the practicum course.

Welcome to Clinical Science
The clinical science program in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences at the University of Delaware was established in 1968, has been continuously accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1975, and was accredited by the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System in 2011.
Our overall goal is to train clinical researchers who produce, apply, and disseminate scientific knowledge. We train clinical scientists who keep abreast of current theory and research and contribute to the knowledge base in clinical psychology.
Nature and goals of the program
We believe that research is an essential career commitment for those who seek and obtain the Ph.D., and students accepted into our program are expected to share that commitment. Students also learn evidence-based assessment and interventions for adults and children with psychological disorders, but students whose primary career goal is the direct practice of psychology would be more satisfied in a different training program.
The aim of the clinical science program is to provide a structured set of research and clinical experiences that will prepare students for a career in clinical science. Therefore, graduates of our program will be competent in designing, conducting, and evaluating psychological research, as well as in delivering empirically-supported psychological services.
Consistent with this orientation, our program is a member of the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science - a prestigious group of 63 university-based clinical training programs and 12 internship sites that share similar goals for their programs and for the training of future clinical psychologists.
An integrative approach to training
The program integrates science and practice, which is reflected in collaborative, translational research. Our faculty and students apply basic psychological theories and empirical findings to real-world clinical problems such as depression, anxiety, child maltreatment and trauma, aggression, and couples’ distress in cancer patients.
Our program’s training model is consistent with the vision of the Delaware Project . Specifically, we train students to emphasize continuity across a spectrum of research activities concerned with (a) basic mechanisms of psychopathology and behavior change, (b) intervention generation and refinement, (c) intervention efficacy and effectiveness, and (d) implementation and dissemination.
Research with faculty mentors
Faculty members maintain visible and well-funded research programs. Much of this work is interdisciplinary, including collaborative projects with scholars in medical schools, universities, educational systems, and community agencies in the surrounding area. Members of the clinical faculty have been active in national, state, and local organizations concerned with advancing psychological knowledge; have played leadership roles in national organizations (e.g., the Academy for Clinical Psychological Science , the Delaware Project ); and serve on many journal editorial boards, grant review study sections at the National Institute of Mental Health, and national task forces.
Funding is robust and drawn from multiple sources, including a Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health, plus individual investigator grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse & Alcoholism, National Institute of Child Health & Human Development, among numerous other federal and private sources.
Mentor-based training
Students work closely with faculty advisors who mentor them throughout their graduate career. Students often work with more than one faculty member. Faculty mentors provide training in research techniques, scholarly knowledge, and written and oral communication skills that enable students to become successful independent researchers. Students publish research findings in prominent journals; present them at national meetings; develop teaching skills; and write grant applications. These experiences, and others, have helped our graduate students win numerous awards and prepared them for successful research in academia, government, or industry.
Collaborations
The clinical science program offers external research and clinical training opportunities through affiliations with community mental health centers and medical centers in the surrounding areas. All provide training in evidence-based practice. Our faculty members also have research collaborations with the University of Pennsylvania Center for Anxiety Treatment and Research, the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, the State of Delaware Department of Children, Youth, and Families, Head Start Centers, A. I. duPont Hospital for Children, a network of social service agencies in Philadelphia, and area schools. These sites provide unique opportunities to apply clinical science to diverse problems and populations in community settings.

Our training opportunities emphasize continuity and interdependence across laboratory, clinical, and community contexts. Innovative training initiatives that break down traditional silos across the broad spectrum of clinical science require flexible pedagogy and implementation.
