Compulsory Unpaid Community Service

Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children). To what extent do you agree or disagree? It has been suggested that high school programmes should introduce compulsory unpaid community services. The modern society is advancing in the field of technology, it is increasingly ignoring the importance of the human relations. I believe it is a good idea as this can provide students valuable skills. Firstly, life skills are very important. Students can learn communication skill and also team work by doing volunteer services. Community services also teach to manage their time and improve their organisational skills. As we know, after-school activities are no more popular. Students go to home and sit in front of the screen to watch TV or to play games or to surf internet. These daily scenario can affect their growth mentally and physically. These also can make them anti-social. Community activities can encourage them to be more creative. The skills learned by volunteer work can add rich experience when looking for a job and increase their employability. Children can gain more experience in order to develop their personalities and know more about real life. Moreover they will gain respect towards work. In addition to, any kind of leisure time charity work will prevent from sitting down and doing nothing. There is also possibilities to reduce crime level in the high school age by providing community services compulsory. If students are actively participated in activities, they will not come up with silly ideas which can be dangerous to society or to them. Students can have contacts with people beyond their family, cycle of friends and school. Such activities help them to know others' culture and different environment. Community services can be a step towards building a better and healthy society. In conclusion, I strongly admire unpaid community service to be part of higher education. However, success of such programme would certainly depends heavily on how it is set up, implemented and the activity options provided. It has been supposed that educationalist should include obligatory unpaid community services in the modern education system. It is agreed that involving young adults in the social activities can be helpful in their socialization process, but it should not be mandatory.

No one would dispute the fact that it is very important that children nurture their spirit and learn how they can be fruitful for the society. Nowadays, human values are becoming pale and education experts are responsible for bringing back the values by putting up social activities, in particular unpaid community services, in curriculum. Inserting such activities would not only influence children's interpersonal skills, but also have a significant impact on the socialization process. They learn how to manage their time and team and improve team working. Support needed.

On the other hand, I strongly believe that this social activities shouldn't be mandatory. Compulsory activities usually do not create enough motivation and guarantee for more activities in the future. Coercion always has been a punitive strategy not incentive. Support needed. Education authorities should put such program in extracurricular not in the main programs which may interfere with their studies. Having flexible program and encouragement policies can grantee to keep on the activity in the future. They should learn that, anywhere anytime, they can be a member of any community service. As an illustration, according to a research in a university people who were active in school charity continue their activities in adulthood.

To conclude, unpaid community service which has a prominent role to teach life skills should be part of after-school activities and can have a lot of benefits for society and young adults. Using encouragement strategy can make a vow and commitment in adulthood and help to create the philanthropy culture in a society.

The topic of introducing free social service in the curriculum of students of high school is often discussed in our society with varying views among students, teachers and parents. While some favour this stance, others oppose it. In my views, it is a good idea to make it mandatory for these students to serve the society selflessly.

People who are against to bring working for community's well-being as a part of activities of high school courses argue that it will waste students' time and efforts, and rather they should concentrate on the subjects such as science to make their career. They can contribute in society's welfare after completion of their education.

In my opinion, if we introduce servicing the society in different ways, such as, making the neighbourhood clean and green, giving training of sports to younger generation, collecting funds for community's betterment and so on in the high school programmes, it will bring students a sense of responsibility towards society for doing the greater good. Moreover, this step will make them grow as good human being. For example, when high school students make their colony clean and green, then there is high probability that they will keep continuing such activities after their schooling too. Hence due to these reasons, it will be a very good stand if such students are made to learn doing service for society for free.

In my final analysis, we must make it incumbent on high school students to serve the community. This action will bring healthy change in our society and we will have more responsible citizens.

Unpaid Community Service Essay

Working for humanity without getting any salary is a real meaning of humanity, like educate poor people, planting trees, serving food to needy people as well as doing any better work in neighbourhood that's shows good people really exist in todays world, I completely agree with this opinion that it should be a part of high school programe with these type of programes we can even improve our world. Firstly, working in a charitable orgnization it gives us more exprience about our neighbourhood and people who lives around us For example, team work and helping people now a days students don't have any workout tod o after school they do nothing with their spare time rather than westing it on video games and watching T.V. by sending our students in unpaid orgnization teaches them life skills and they learn team work helping people and including behaviour with older people/children and respect as well. Secondly, volunteer work does not support your C.V but it teaches you more than that. For example geting Job after completion of school/college qualification you will understand the value of money and spending it in appropriate way rather than westing it on silly things these type of things we should only learn when we first do unpaid work. furthermore we should encourage our youngsters that they learn skills. In conclusion, my opinion is crystal clear that high school system made it compulsory for students working in community service or unpaid orgnization it will be benificial for students, community as well as for the country. *** Please comment on my answer.

That's not true actually. You can have a number of subjects in one sentence.

The problem with the conclusion is that a full-stop is missing. It should be:

"In conclusion, my opinion is crystal clear that high school system made it compulsory for students working in community service or unpaid organization will be beneficial for students, community as well as for the country".

At least I think that is what it is meant to say. The essay has quite a few grammar errors that make it difficult to follow in places.

IELTS Essay - Doing Unpaid Work

Some people think that all teenagers should be required to do unpaid work in their free time to help the local community. They believe this would benefit both the individual teenager and society as a whole. Do you agree or disagree? These days, some people believe that teenagers should do unpaid work in their spare time for the benefit of society. I strongly agree with this notion that it is necessary to engage them in voluntary work. This essay will discuss the main points with examples. To begin with, adolescents who take part in unpaid work would be more responsible to the community. When they are involved with other residents then they come to realize the problems that people deal with everyday like poverty, pollution and many more. Moreover, we all have been affected by the current Covid-19 pandemic and a good many people suffer a loss. As revealed by “ The Voice of Vietnam- VOV”, a volunteer who is against the virus and empathize with mental pain that the patients are going through, he always delivers oxygen and food for people who need it the most. For that reason, volunteering makes students the most responsible citizens of the country. Furthermore, unpaid work can help children expand their social cycle and soft skills. Because when they participate in an unrewarded job, they will meet different types of people, as they learn from each other myriad skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication and handle difficult situations. For instance, a recent search conducted in Japan has revealed that students who had take part in voluntary work can be more sociable, energetic and also respectful to others. Compared with teenagers that do not do unpaid work, they will become more introverted, idle and listless. On balance, I believe that youngsters should do unpaid work for social work instead of paying. This is because they are able to learn many crucial skills and are more responsible to society.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children) .

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer 1: (Agree) Unpaid community service, according to many, prepares students for their university studies and is helpful for their future careers. I believe making it a requisite in the high school curriculum to help the community and develop pupils’ soft skills is an excellent idea.

No doubt a school should teach students morality, teamwork, and tolerance beyond their academic subjects like math, economics etc. When voluntary social works are mandatory for high school students, they can take up some important activities which are appraised by universities and employers. If unpaid community service is optional, students will not pay much attention to such social services. If we want our youth to serve the nation in the future, it is the right time to let them work for philanthropic causes, clean the neighbourhood and teach the juniors.

Moreover, through these programmes students can learn how to communicate, work in a team and manage their time. This, in turn, develops their organizational skills. Nowadays, unfortunately, teenagers mostly go home and watch TV, browse the internet or play video games; often the reason for silly ideas they come up with, ultimately fueling adolescent delinquency. Social interaction enhances young pupils’ understanding of their surroundings and helps build a better generation who are not corporate robots. Many developed countries’ initiatives to make voluntary social work a part of the secondary school curriculum is a great example and developing countries should follow it.

In conclusion, I concur that free community service should be a mandatory part of high school programmes as it serves society to a great extent, enhances pupils’ soft skills and help them become better human.

Model Answer 2: (Disagree) Instilling social commitment among young students is seen as a valuable lesson by many who suggest that youths should be required to do voluntary community service as part of their academic syllabus. Since making it compulsory would create an antipathy feeling among them and kill valuable study time, I opine against it.

Glancing over the immense implications to youth students who would be forced to help the community members, clean the streets, help the elder and teach youngsters, many academics suggest that community service should not be mandatory. Why should we force them to do something so early in life that might backfire? For instance, research suggests that many students hate doing homework but these same groups of students love to finish the same amount of tasks when they are offered to do so in groups and are not forced. If we truly want our children to become aware of the sense of community, we should inspire and motivate them to help others, not dictate to them. This sense of being part of the community comes from the family, not from the hour of work they do in the open air.

‘When high school pupils engage in community service, they learn some soft skills like interaction, teamwork and time management’, argued by many who advocate compulsory social service for the student. If this is the case, we need to think twice. If schools are not already teaching these skills to students in the classroom and on school premises, we need to reform our education system, not add community service to the academic syllabus. While most schools struggle to finish the prescribed syllabus on time, they should not be burdened with more work. Afterschool work in the community kills time that students can use to study or play with others.

To conclude, helping others in the community and building a sense of responsibility towards the community we live in are two excellent qualities. Teachers should not seize students in helping community members but rather prepare them for the future so that these qualities grow in them even more acutely.

Sample Answer 3: (Agree) In recent years, there has been a growing belief that high school programmes should include unpaid community service as a mandatory component. While some may argue that students are already burdened with academic responsibilities, I agree that community service should be an essential part of high school education for several reasons.

Firstly, community service provides young people with an opportunity to develop their character and enhance their social skills. While there may be some logistical challenges, the positive impact on the community and society as a whole makes it a worthwhile endeavour.

Some argue that it is a valuable experience for students, while others disagree. I am of the opinion that it should not be compulsory for high school students to engage in unpaid community service, and this essay will explain why.

Firstly, it is important to note that high school students already have numerous commitments such as academic studies, extracurricular activities, and part-time jobs. Adding compulsory community service to these commitments will only increase their workload and may lead to feelings of burnout and stress. In conclusion, while unpaid community service is a valuable experience for students, I disagree that it should be compulsory for high school students. Students should have the freedom to choose how they wish to contribute to society, and it is essential to respect their choices.

Firstly, inasmuch as high school students, these days, spend their time only on the activities that serve their personal interests, it is necessary to encourage them to take on responsibilities that impact other people as well. This way, they not only learn how to be responsible for other beings but also become familiar with the challenges that society faces. For instance, if they were in charge of the sanitation of a small neighborhood for a week, they would understand how hard it is to keep a public place clean. As a result, they would consider it a civic duty to help keep the environment clean. Therefore, I believe that such services will make the society a much better place.

Secondly, such educational programs, if done right, would create a feeling of satisfaction among students. In other words, having done a task successfully boosts self-esteem and improves people’s outlook on life. Many people who have done voluntary work assert that the feeling one gets after helping someone in need or doing a good deed is second to none. Hence, I believe that introducing students to charity work could help them feel fulfilled and consequently encourage them to make such activities a part of their habit.

In conclusion, making community service a requirement in high school education ensures that future generations will understand the true meaning of responsibility and contribution.

The IELTS Writing section challenges your ability to express ideas clearly and coherently in English. It consists of two tasks:  Task 1 , where you describe and summarise information from graphs, charts, or diagrams, and  Task 2 , where you craft an essay in response to a given prompt. The topics for Task 1 differ between IELTS General Training  and IELTS Academic.

For example, in Task 2, you might encounter a topic like "Some people believe that unpaid community service." In response, you must write a well-structured essay supporting your stance with relevant examples and reasoning.

Firstly, engaging in community service helps students develop essential skills. These skills are crucial for their personal and professional growth, preparing them for future challenges in both academic and career settings.

Secondly, unpaid community service fosters a sense of responsibility among students. Today, we will be looking at an opinion essay and giving the samples a rating from an examiner’s perspective. The essays in this IELTS task 2 rating would score between a 6 and 7 in the test. Once you’ve finished reading these ratings, be sure to read our band 9 model .

Write about the following topic:

Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity , improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children).

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

You should write at least 250 words.

Band 5.5 essay

Many individuals reckon that there should be a group of adults of high school , who work for welfare of society . To help the needy people of society, help the children to learn skills in sports and to upgrade the poor ones. I completely agree with the statement because it is mandatory aspect of a society to trained its young generation to serve the humanity without any regard.

Firstly,  in non developed countries people are facing plethora of problems regarding hunger, education, shelter and so many basic needs . So it is demand of time to train our youth to distribute their role in the development of society, However, to make it a compulsory part is not good idea so far because students should owe it with their on desire and choose this by heart not by the enforcement of institutes. For instance, in my country many students of universities are doing this  virtuous deed. They do provide food and shelter to people who are homeless, while there are numerous foundations which are providing basic needs of life to orphans and unbacked humans.

To do a charity work makes people humble and empathetic and they can feel others pain and sorrows. It is good for health as well because when an individual helps someone, it gives him a great pleasure and the impulse of enjoyment . Universities should prepare their youth to do this virtuous work because youth are the most important share of a society and to grow their community they have a big role .There should be proper teams who have specific target like one team held who should serve food for hungry people in the street , another should teach sports skills to poor children besides this they should give them education as well. Therefore , high schools should arrange a proper ceremony to encourage their students to take part in this work willingly.

In the end , I strongly appreciate this idea  because we all are humans and to serve humanity is our first duty , so we have to prepare our young generation to serve mankind.

Task response

The response is long at 352 words, but if it was completed within the time limit then it wouldn’t be a problem.

 Task achievement is affected because the writer often talks about university students, but the question is about high school students.  Some areas are a little unclear and this effects how clear the answer is. The conclusion is also not very clear here, and needs to answer the question more directly.

  • Addresses all parts of the task although some parts may be more fully covered than others
  • Presents a relevant position although the conclusions may become unclear or repetitive
  • Presents relevant main ideas but some may be inadequately developed/unclear

Coherence and cohesion

Coherence is quite well controlled but referencing is a problem.

Quite a good range of transitions has been used in the essay, but in body paragraph 2, there are not enough cohesive devices (transitions and referencing.

It would be better to use the transition ‘In conclusion’ rather than ‘In the end’ as it is more appropriate and the tone is formal.

  • Arranges information and ideas coherently and there is a clear overall progression
  • Uses cohesive devices effectively, but cohesion within and/or between sentences may be faulty or mechanical
  • May not always use referencing clearly or appropriately
  • Uses paragraphing, but not always logically

Lexical resource

There are quite a lot of  lexis errors and at times the language is a bit too informal. For example, ‘reckon’ could be changed to ‘believe’ or ‘argue’.

There are points here where wording is a bit clumsy or words are not well-chosen. ‘Group of adults of high school’ sounds a bit inflexible, and ‘high school students’ would be better. ‘Grow their community’ is quite a strange phrase to use in this essay – ‘improve their community’ or ‘contribute to their community’ would be more accurate. ‘In non-developed ‘ could be ‘in developing countries’.

Students love to talk about ‘a plethora’ of something. The examiner probably sees this word all the time, knows it is memorised, and probably doesn’t like it. It means ‘an excessive or large amount’, so in this case it isn’t wrong, but students often use it incorrectly. Just avoid it, words like this on their own will not have a large effect on your vocabulary score. It also makes the examiner suspicious of your approach to learning vocabulary. As a result, they will probably start thinking a lot more about how flexible your word choices are, and the less thinking they do about that, the better!

  • Uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task
  • Attempts to use less common vocabulary but with some inaccuracy
  • Makes some errors in spelling and/or word formation, but they do not impede communication

Grammatical range and accuracy

Punctuation is controlled quite well but there are fairly common issues with spacing. The writer often puts a space before commas and full stops, but not after. We NEVER do this in English. The space should always come AFTER the punctuation mark and never before. This error is common in people who write from right to left in their first language (e.g. Arabic, Urdu etc.). When you write from left to right in English, make sure you move the punctuation and spaces as well!

There are some article errors and plural form errors i.e. ‘students of universities’ – university could have been used singularly here ‘university students’ – ‘a charity’ no article is required here.  When writing, it is important to avoid sexist language by using male pronouns i.e. ‘him’ as this excludes women and is inappropriate nowadays. It would have been better if this was just ‘them’ as it is referring to people.

  • Uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms
  • Makes some errors in grammar and punctuation but they rarely reduce communication

Band 7 essay

Nowadays, engaging in volunteering activities has brought an immense impact towards society as it is vital especially in the academic field. Many have suggested it is a productive way to aid students in developing and determining their field of interests. This essay will argue why including community services to the school curriculum is beneficial for adolescents and society, and why others think it is not. Some people are inclined to believe that volunteering is unnecessary and insignificant for learning. Education is not solely limited to the theoretical foundations that are typically learnt from educational institutions, but practical experiences are also learnt out through serving community hospitals or teaching for physically-challenged in public libraries. In this way, they are able to acquire knowledge and professional experiences that schools do not usually offer, which maximizes their involvement to learn new skills and expand their career opportunities.

Many organizations offer volunteer opportunities including courses and training which may improve the presentation of their job applications. Employers often value not only academic qualifications, but also acquired experiences such as communication and management skills. Overall, it would be advantageous for students to allocate community services since exposure to affairs outside school may potentially set applicants apart and stand out amongst other job aspirants.

In conclusion, I completely agree that adding unpaid community services to the secondary curriculum should be mandated since it provides supplementary skills and it is essential for future job applications.

The response is slightly under length at 236 words. The main issue here for task response is that the writer has not written about about ‘why others think it is not’ which is clear in the conclusion. For that reason task response has not been achieved in the first body paragraph as the first sentences reads ‘Some people are inclined to believe that volunteering is unnecessary and insignificant for learning’  but does not expand on why they think have that opinion. That is a shame because the rest of the essay scores highly and if the writer had not made that mistake, the rating would have been higher.

Coherence is quite well controlled except for the first body paragraph which has been mentioned above. The ideas do not expand on the topic sentence given and as a result would be marked down to a 6 due to the lack of referencing. Ideally it needs a transition such as ‘However’ after the first sentence. We usually teach students to write two sentences for their conclusion just in case they get marked down for insufficient paragraphing. Had the writer not made these errors this would likely be an 8.

Lexis is very well controlled with only rare errors –  ‘ they’ should reference ‘students’ – ‘ presentation’ – more appropriate would be ‘content’ – ‘stand out’ –  ‘enable them to stand out’

  • Uses a wide range of vocabulary
  • Fluently and flexibly to convey precise meanings
  • Skilfully uses uncommon lexical items but there may be occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation
  • Produces rare errors in spelling and/or word formation

Grammar is controlled very well also with only very occasional errors – ‘brought an immense impact on’ – ‘had an immense impact on’ –  ‘ teaching for physically challenged’ – ‘for the physically challenged ‘. 

  • Uses a wide range of structures
  • The majority of sentences are error-free
  • Makes only very occasional errors or inappropriacies

Knowing how to structure your IELTS Writing Task 2 essay is an essential skill that can make the difference between getting and not getting the band score you deserve. With that in mind, we have outlined the most common IELTS Writing Task 2 structures below.

Nearly all of my Task 2 essays follow this basic structure: The sentences you put in each paragraph will depend on what type of question you get.

The five most common IELTS Writing Task 2 questions are:

  • Opinion (Agree or Disagree)
  • Advantages and Disadvantages
  • Problem and Solution
  • Discussion (Discuss both views)
  • Two-part Question

Below I will outline examples and a structure approved by experienced IELTS teachers and examiners for each type of question. This will help you write a clear, coherent answer and hopefully boost your IELTS band score. I also include an example answer for each type of question so you can see the structure in a real essay.

Please note that these are general structures and may vary slightly depending on the question.

Please also note that no ‘one’ Task 2 essay structure will get you a high score. There are many types of structures that can get you a high score. These are just some I think are effective and easy to learn.

It is argued that volunteering should be made part of the school curriculum. This essay agrees with that suggestion completely because it help pupils develop soft skills and helps them gain much-needed work experience.

Education should not be limited to strictly academic pursuits, and those in education should also develop life skills, such as teamwork, empathy and self-discipline, and one of the best ways to hone these aptitudes is through community service. Serving those less fortunate than ourselves teaches us many lessons, including how to work with people from other backgrounds and the value of hard work, thus enabling us to hone these skills before becoming an adult. For example, many young people from wealthier countries take a gap year and help those less fortunate than themselves to increase their gratitude for what they have and improve their work ethic.

Many colleges and companies are also increasingly looking for this type of experience. Most school leavers have the same grades, and charitable work can help set you apart from other students when making college applications. For example, Cambridge and Oxford receive thousands of applications from straight-A students yearly and can only accept a small percentage of applicants. What you have done outside the classroom often differentiates you from everyone else and gets you that coveted spot.

In conclusion, teenagers should be made to partake in unpaid work as part of their schooling because it will help them learn things they wouldn’t ordinarily learn from their teachers, and it will also boost their chances of getting into third-level education.

It is argued that technology plays an ever-increasing role in schools and universities. Increased access to information and student freedom are the main advantages, whereas dependency on technology and decreasing levels of face-to-face contact are the main disadvantages.

Access to more information and student autonomy are the principal advantages of increasing the use of electronic devices in education. With the internet, students can access all the information available about any topic, regardless of what books and other resources are available in the school. Furthermore, students can focus on whatever topic or subject they want and study it in depth. A prime example of this is the number of online university courses available to students, covering a myriad of subjects that, up until recently, were unavailable to most learners. This has resulted in more people studying third-level degrees than ever before at a pace and schedule that suits them.

The main disadvantages associated with the increasing use of technology in education are the dependency on this technology and the decrease in face-to-face interaction between students. With many students now using the internet as their primary source of information, they often struggle to use other academic resources to find what they’re looking for. As well as this, students spend more time looking at computer screens by themselves than interacting with each other, which is thought to lead to lower levels of emotional intelligence. For instance, the recent explosion in smartphone use has been at the expense of genuine human interaction. This results in soft skills, such as verbal communication and empathy, being affected.

In conclusion, the benefits technology brings to education, such as unrestricted access to information and student autonomy, must be weighed against the drawbacks, such as dependency on this technology and the negative effects on human interaction.

The Internet has provided students with access to more information than ever before. This has allowed learners to research and learn about any subject at the touch of a button. It is therefore agreed that technology is a very worthwhile tool for education. Wikipedia is a prime example, where students can type in any keyword and gain access to in-depth knowledge quickly and easily.

However, many disagree and feel that technology deprives people of real human interaction. Human interaction teaches people valuable skills such as discourse, debate and empathy. Without these soft skills, many people find it difficult to become successful in work and their personal lives. Despite this, human interaction is still possible through the internet, and this essay disagrees that technology should be dismissed for this reason. For instance, Skype and Facebook allow people to interact in ways that were never before possible.

While the benefits of technology, particularly the internet, allow students to tap into limitless sources of information, some still feel that people should be wary of this new phenomenon and not allow it to curb face-to-face interaction. However, as long as we carefully consider the importance of human interaction in education, the educational benefits are clearly positive.

Learners are becoming increasingly dependent on technology, such as the Internet and mobile devices. This essay believes the main problems associated with dependence on computers are the lack of original thought and copying original work from others and suggests critical thinking classes and writing analysis software as the most viable solutions.

The principal problems with over-reliance on technology are people being unable to think for themselves and plagiarism. With access to so much information, students often rely on other people’s opinions instead of forming their own. As well as this, they often use search engines to answer a question and copy the text from a website rather than thinking about the question. This practice is prohibited in schools and universities and stunts students’ intellectual development because they will never truly think for themselves, which is what university is supposed to be for. For example, many teachers complain that students copy web pages straight from Wikipedia word for word rather than giving a reasoned answer to their questions.

Solutions to these worrying problems are special classes to focus on critical thinking and teachers using anti-plagiarism software to detect copying. If teachers create situations where students have to infer meaning and express opinions based on a small amount of information, this will ensure that students have an opportunity to develop these skills. Also, if students know that their assignments are being checked for plagiarism, this will be enough to deter them from doing so. For instance, many universities already use this kind of software to scan coursework for plagiarism, and it could be extended to include all homework by learners in both secondary and tertiary education.

In conclusion, the main problems with the overuse of technology in education are the lack of original thought and plagiarism. These can be solved through special classes that teach students analytical skills and plagiarism detection software.

This essay will first suggest fair pay as a key element leading to job satisfaction, and it will then state that it is not very likely that everyone can be happy with their job.

The most important thing that satisfies someone at work is being compensated fairly. If those more senior than you respect you as a person and the job you are doing, then you feel like you are valued. A fair salary and benefits are important marks of respect, and if you feel you are being underpaid, you will either resent your bosses or look for another job. These two factors came top of a recent job satisfaction survey conducted by Monster.com, which found that 72% of people were pleased with their current role if their superiors regularly told them they were appreciated.

With regard to the question of happiness for all workers, I think this is and always will be highly unlikely. The vast majority of people fail to reach their goals and end up working in a post they don’t really care about in return for a salary. This money is just enough to pay their living expenses which often means they are trapped in a cycle of disenchantment. For example, The Times recently reported that 89% of office workers would leave their jobs if they did not need the money.

In conclusion, being satisfied with your trade or profession is an important part of one’s well-being, and respect from one’s colleagues and fair pay can improve your level of happiness; however, job satisfaction for all workers is an unrealistic prospect.

Can I get a band 8 or 9 following these structures? 

Nobody can give you a Task 2 IELTS structure that guarantees high scores. Your score is dependent on how good your grammar and vocabulary are and how well you answer the question. A good structure will help you answer the question to some extent and boost your score for coherence and cohesion, but you must use relevant ideas and use these ideas well to answer the question.

Why unpaid community serviced should NOT be a compulsory part of high school programmes:

Can hamper usual study

  • Students are already overloaded with their studies and labs. Adding unpaid community services would simply add burdens to their life.
  • Not all students would participate in charity or voluntary works spontaneously. Thus who would be forced to do it, would lose their interest in doing this short of work in the future.
  • More emphasize should be given to improve the academic qualities than forcing them to clean the neighborhoods.
  • Since this is unpaid task, it might be less helpful for students who needs to do the part-time jobs.
  • Making voluntary works compulsory in high school is not a good idea as there are more important things to do for the high school students.

Sample Answer: Co-curricular activities, like volunteer community service, make pupil prepared for the future practically. Normal curricular activity can only help students in their academic theories. But the student who is only experienced with academic curricular may not be able to apply what he or she has learned in practice. Though it is sometimes hard to manage leisure time to volunteer, the boons of voluntary community service are tremendous to individual, individual’s family and individual’s community. In the case, the right pair of time and motivation can help student find friends, reach out to the community and learn new competence and even it can advance the future career. Besides all of these, volunteer community service helps them to form a noble habit from the early age. That is why I think unpaid community service should be integrated into the syllabus at high school level.

First of all, the best part of unpaid community service is that it functions like glue that holds a community together.  Volunteering helps the students to keep in touch with the community and make an excellent atmosphere to live. Even conducting a smallest program can make a real difference to the lives of residents of the community. For instance, charity program to those in need is a very good way helping the poorer neighbour. The volunteering is a two-way street: not only is it blessing for the society, it is also worthwhile for the students. They can boost their interpersonal skills, expand network and make new friends. While some students are easy outgoing and others are introvert and have a hard time meeting the new people. Unpaid community service gives the occasion to exercise and improve social skills, since they are communicating frequently to a group of people with common interest. Teaching sports to the younger children is another good example. Children discern everything you do. By returning back to the society, the volunteer sets forth them firsthand how volunteering makes a difference and how good it feels to help the other.

Similarly, the experience of unpaid social service is invaluable advantage for future career. The volunteering provides an outstanding momentum to practice the crucial skills used in workplace, like communicating, teamwork, problem solving, task management, project planning, and so on. One might sense more comfortable expanding one’s web at work once one have honed this skills in a volunteer position first.

In all in all, I believe human beings have certain objective to accomplish. That is to say, human beings are the representative of God on earth and being the representative of God on earth it is man’s role to look after His creature including human being and other creature as well. And unpaid community service seems to perfect to this role. Therefore, it would be appreciating, if ‘free volunteer service to the society’ is incorporated into the syllabus of high school curriculum.

Writing Task 2 Sample

IELTS Writing Task 2 ( also known as IELTS Essay Writing ) is the second task of your IELTS Writing test. Here, you will be presented with an essay topic and you will be scored based on your ability to respond to the topic.

You need to write at least 250 words and justify your opinion with arguments, discussion, examples, problem outlining, proposing possible solutions and supporting your position. You will have approximately 40 minutes to finish your Essay Writing. IELTS Writing Task 2 carries more weights than Writing Task 1.

Ambition and Success: Sample IELTS Essay

Yesterday, one of my writing correction service students sent me an interesting question that I had not seen before. As always, I wrote a sample band 9 answer for him, and I thought I would share it with all my website readers, too. The question is about whether or not ambition is necessary for achieving success.

Planning an Answer

Here is the question:

Some people think that ambition is essential for success. To what extent do you agree?

First of all, let’s think about the question. It helps to paraphrase it a little. In other words, it is asking you “To what extent do you agree that people need to be ambitious to achieve success?”

On the surface, it seems pretty obvious. Most people who are very successful are also very ambitious, so the answer seems to be “yes.” However, there are no right and wrong answers for IELTS writing, so it’s really a matter of opinion.

Personally, I want to say that I disagree that it is essential and make these two points:

  • Most of the time, people achieve success due to ambition.
  • However, other factors (such as innate talent or joyful enthusiasm) are the main reasons.

I will structure my answer like this:

Explain the main idea.
Give my opinion in the .
Body paragraph #1This will be a sort of , where I admit that ambition is a huge contributing factor.
Body paragraph #2Here, I will give two other factors and attempt to show how they can function in the absence of ambition. These are natural talent and sheer enthusiasm (i.e. passion).
This paragraph will summarise the essay.

Notes on Language

First of all, you should try to make yourself aware of the important words related to this topic and also the ways that they might be used. That includes parts of speech (verb, noun, adjective, etc.).

The student who sent me this question wrote an essay in which he frequently mixed up these words:

  • success / succeed
  • ambition / ambitious
  • achieve / achievement

You must also think about spelling and collocations. Please also consider repetition. You might be tempted to overuse words like “ambition” because they are so fundamental to the essay, but you can use omission, pronouns, and synonyms to avoid this. Here’s a useful guide to avoiding repetition:

Sample Band 9 Answer

It has been said that ambition is necessary in order for people to achieve success. However, not all successful people are ambitious and so, whilst it is often true, it is not absolutely essential.

Admittedly, ambition is a major contributor to success. It seems self-evident that ambitious people are more likely to go out and achieve great things. The history books are full of such examples, including great leaders, scientists, and athletes. Achieving anything of great importance requires overcoming challenges and often adversity, and this is of course hard to do without a sense of ambition.

That said, there are other factors to consider, and these might render ambition unnecessary in some cases. If a person is naturally talented, they might achieve amazing things in life without any sense of ambition. Take someone with a gift for music, as an example. They might be so astoundingly skilled that they can learn music easily, then impress others to the extent that they become famous. For others, this might be less about natural talent than passion. In other words, they might learn music out of personal interest and then practise it for their own enjoyment, ultimately earning the respect of the musical community not through ambition but through enthusiasm for music as an art and for their own sense of enjoyment.

In conclusion, in most cases it is probably true that ambition is essential for success; however, there are other factors to consider. Many incredibly successful people have achieved great things in spite of a lack of ambition simply due to their talent.

Russian troops are closing in on the strategic eastern Ukrainian town of Pokrovsk, according to open-source battlefield maps , casting doubts on Ukraine’s hopes that its new offensive into western Russia will prompt Moscow to scale back its attacks elsewhere on the battlefield.

After capturing several villages in the area and pushing along a railway line, Russian forces are now about eight miles from Pokrovsk, one of Ukraine’s main defensive strongholds in the Donetsk region, according to the maps, which are based on combat footage and satellite images .

The capture of the city would bring Russia a step closer to its long-held goal of seizing the entire Donetsk region, much of which it already controls. Pokrovsk, a city with a prewar population of about 60,000, sits on a key road linking several cities that form a defensive arc protecting the part of Donetsk that is still held by Ukraine.

The situation is so dire that the city’s military administration has urged residents to leave, although it has not issued a formal order. “The enemy is rapidly approaching the outskirts of Pokrovsk,” Serhii Dobriak, the head of the military administration, said on Thursday . “Evacuation is underway in the community. Don’t delay!”

Russia’s advance toward Pokrovsk is a reminder that, despite Ukrainian forces’ successful incursion into Russia’s western Kursk region , they are still losing ground on their own territory. Ukrainian soldiers on the eastern front say that the fighting there has anything but abated, and that they remain outnumbered and outgunned by Russian troops.
