Aimed at working professionals, the Doctor of Education (EdD) provides students with the critical skills necessary to better navigate the increasingly complex and constantly changing educational framework. With the theme of “Education in the Digital Age”, this program is designed to help students address challenges that require a sophisticated and research informed response from educators. This allows students to focus on specific aspects of the use of technology in education as well as topics that are set in the broader landscape of the digital age.

Graduates are prepared to analyze complex problems of practice and use collaborative skills to develop innovative solutions to community issues.

Designed with K-12, university and college educators, as well as public and private organizations in mind, the EdD is situated fully online, allowing for more ease of access for working professionals. Providing our EdD fully online positions this program at the core of our digital age, allowing students to critically reflect on digital practice within our modern society.

This program draws on faculty members from a wide range of programs within the Faculties of Education, Science, Health Sciences, Social Science and Humanities, Business and Information Technology, and Engineering and Applied Science. This cross-faculty and interdisciplinary approach is an important differentiator for the program and one of the many key factors that positions the EdD ahead of the curve.

By the end of this program, students will be able to:

  • Identify and investigate complex educational problems to provide research-informed, professionally grounded solutions.
  • Demonstrate fluency and in-depth critical understanding of digital technologies used in educational research.
  • Produce original research and writing that meets the scholarly standards in the field of education.
  • Incorporate divergent literacies, perspectives, and disciplines when analyzing, evaluating, and articulating positions on research, policy, or practice for education in the digital age.
  • Employ relevant research methodologies and theoretical underpinnings for framing and analyzing problems of educational practice in the digital age.
  • Articulate the ways that uses of digital technology in education inform and are informed by the social, cultural, community, institutional, and policy context.
  • Admission requirements
  • Application deadlines
  • How to apply
  • Completion of a research project or thesis-based master's level degree from a recognized institution in the same area of graduate study or a closely related subject.
  • A minimum B+ average (GPA: 3.3 on a 4.3 scale)
  • Define a research question or problem
  • Devise a research design; and
  • Analyze and report research findings in an academically rigorous manner, such as a major academic paper

This evidence may include professional documents that demonstrate the ability to conduct and report on research at a graduate level.

Required supporting documents:

Please see the checklist of required documents for a list of supporting documentation that must be submitted with your application.

Additional requirements:

  • A commitment from a thesis supervisor - see Faculty Research
  • A two- to three-page statement of academic intent
  • A curriculum vitae (CV)
  • A substantive writing sample. A sample of the applicant's MA thesis is optimal. However, a sample from any published work (with the applicant as the first author) would suffice if a thesis was not completed or pursued

Please see   application deadlines   for specific dates. Note that the application deadlines listed are for both the online application and all supporting documentation.

Note: Application deadlines may be extended for domestic and/or international applicants. Check the application deadlines page for updates. Extended deadlines are not guaranteed.

Applications for admission to all graduate studies programs are submitted online. There are five steps you must go through to complete the application process. See   application process and requirements   for step-by-step instructions.

Many of our graduate programs are extremely competitive; the number of qualified applicants normally exceeds the number of seats available for each intake. Satisfaction of minimum entry requirements does not ensure admission.

We wish to acknowledge this land on which the University of Toronto operates. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.

School of Graduate Studies

Counselling psychology, program overview.

The Counselling Psychology program is offered by the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), leading to the Master of Education (MEd) and Doctor of Education (EdD) degrees.

There are three fields:

  • Counselling and Psychotherapy (MEd, EdD)
  • Global Mental Health and Counselling Psychology (MEd)
  • Guidance and Counselling (MEd)

In the field of Counselling and Psychotherapy, the MEd program provides individuals with the opportunity to learn and develop counselling skills appropriate for a variety of work settings. Students are encouraged to develop their courses and practicum learning experiences to suit their own goals. Examples of the types of goals for which suitable programs of study could be developed are adult counselling and psychotherapy, college and university counselling centres, career counselling, geriatrics counselling, multicultural counselling, and community mental health and family life centres. The program of study provides students with the basic preparation for certification as a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and as a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).

Counsellor training in the EdD program emphasizes the role of the counsellor in the educational system, the acquisition of effective supervisory and consultative skills, and the development and assessment of student counselling services in addition to the advanced study of counselling theory and practice. Graduates will be prepared to take leadership positions in the field of educational counselling; as educators in colleges and institutes of education; as directors and coordinators of school guidance programs; as specialists in the provision of counselling-related, in-service training for school personnel; and as providers of advanced levels of personal counselling to school, college, and related populations. This option will be especially attractive to individuals who have demonstrated a career commitment to the provision of counselling services in an educational and community setting.

In the field of Guidance and Counselling, the MEd program helps meet the need for well-prepared practitioners in the field of guidance and counselling in the schools. Therefore, strong preference for admission to this degree program is given to experienced teachers who are interested in specializing in guidance and counselling in the schools. The program of study provides students with the basic preparation for certification as a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA). The MEd program is typically offered on a full-time basis with a limited number of part-time spots available.

  • #UPGraduation2024: University of Pretoria honours higher education and internationalisation scholar Prof Jane Knight
  • University of Pretoria

Posted on September 11, 2024

Professor Jane Knight , a leading scholar in the fields of higher education, internationalisation, globalisation, public policy and international relations, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Pretoria (UP).

Prof Knight, an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto , is renowned in academic circles for her contributions to the international, intercultural and global dimensions of international higher education.

“There is no mention of international higher education without reference to her name and work,” said Prof Chika Sehoole, Dean of UP’s Faculty of Education . “Her definition of internationalisation has been used widely by many scholars and researchers in this field.”

Prof Knight holds a master’s degree in Public Policy and Administration from Queen’s University (2002), a PhD in Higher Education from Michigan State University (2004) and a second PhD in Political Science-International Relations from the  University of Antwerp  (2021). She is also the recipient of two other honorary doctorates.

“I’m honoured and humbled to receive this honorary doctorate from the esteemed University of Pretoria,” Prof Knight said. “It acknowledges the important role that higher education plays in furthering development at the individual, community, national and international levels. It represents the values of excellence, integrity and social justice that are fundamental to my work and to the teaching and learning, research and societal engagement of the University of Pretoria.

“In addition, I congratulate all the graduates of the Faculty of Education at the University of Pretoria. I believe in your capacity and commitment to the importance of community service, entrepreneurial endeavours and innovative actions to making the world a more equitable, trusting and kind place to live.”

Prof Knight has worked in the university and higher education sector since the late 1980s, when she established herself as a renowned scholar in higher education, internationalisation, international development cooperation, globalisation, public policy and international relations. Her passion for collaboration led to her working in more than 75 countries with universities, governments, non-governmental agencies and United Nations agencies.

Her research, policy work and mentoring work in Africa spans more than two decades. She co-founded the African Network for International Education in 2010, which seeks to advance the international dimension of higher education.

“Through this forum, a capacity development programme for young scholars was launched,” Prof Sehoole said. “The programme provided some avenue for the development of research skills and the publication of scholarly work. This resulted in the publication of numerous volumes.”

In 2017, Prof Knight co-founded the Brill book series African Higher Education: Developments and Perspectives . Over the past two decades, she received 21 visiting fellowships to institutions across the globe, including in South Africa, and has been a distinguished visiting professor at the University of Johannesburg .

“In a career that spans several decades, Prof Knight has produced 12 scholarly books, and more than 150 book chapters and journal articles,” Prof Sehoole said. “She is a sought-after speaker and advisor across the globe. She has also been involved in several international evaluations, assessments, review panels and audits for national governments and UN agencies; this is evidence of her expertise and influence across the globe.”
