Working through my list of Pulitzer winners! "Elbow Room" is a 1977 short story collection by James Alan McPherson. He was the first Black winner of the Pulitzer fiction prize and when the MacArthur "genius" grants were first handed out in 1981, he was one of the recipients.

In a final chapter, he takes up the problem of how anyone can ever be guilty, and what the rationale is for holding people responsible and even, on occasion, punishing them. "Elbow Room "is an expanded version of the John Locke Lectures which Dennett gave at Oxford University in 1983. 248 pages, Paperback. First published January 1, 1984.
