Experimental Gameplay (also known in-game as Experiments ) is a game option exclusive to Bedrock Edition . In Java Edition , experimental features are available behind separate data packs . When enabled, it allows players to test some unfinished or work-in-progress features that will eventually be released in future updates.

Toggling [ ]

Experimental Gameplay is found in the world options when creating or editing a world. When turning the option on in an existing world, a copy of the world will be created automatically. Turning the option on disables achievements after the world is created. Once the experimental world is created, it cannot be turned off again. Worlds with the experimental on will have an "Experimental" tag right next to the game mode name in the world menu.

Warnings [ ]

Experimental Gameplay Load

The warning message when attempting to play on an experimental world.

The point of Experimental Gameplay is for the player to look at some not-quite-finished features, which could crash, break, or stop working at any point in future updates. When the player attempts to load the experimental world, it will show a warning message before loading it. Attempting to disable experimental gameplay toggle via external tools could also crash and break the world.

It is recommended to create back up copies of the world when playing on experimental, or not enabling experimental toggle on to avoid breaking the world and having issues in future updates.

With each retail version of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, there are a few features that are currently in an experimental state. Experimental Features can be toggled on for creators who are interested in testing the latest features offered in the preview, and retail versions of Minecraft.

The Experiments toggle list is subject to frequent changes and could have entirely different options from the ones in your own version of Minecraft. Also, the screen shots shown here might look different.

How do I activate an Experimental Features toggle for my world?

You can activate an experimental toggle for any of your new or existing worlds.

Activating experimental features that are still under development means that your world might crash, break, or not work with future updates.

If you're planning to build content that you want to share with the community, it would be best to do it in a non-experimental world.

Toggle Experimental Features in a New World

If you are building a new world from scratch to test experimental features, you can toggle which features you want enabled in the Game Settings.

Under Game settings, navigate down to Experiments and select a toggle to enable the feature.

Image showcasing 4 toggles for experimental features available in Minecraft

When you get the popup asking if you're sure, select Turn on Experiments anyway .

image showing a pop up to confirm if you want to activate experimental features in Minecraft.

Toggle Experimental Features in an Existing World

If you want to add experimental features to an existing world, open that world's game settings and activate the toggles just like you would for a new world.

A copy of your world will be generated automatically after you activate an experimental feature toggle. You can also manually create copies of your world as an extra precaution, in case something goes wrong.

After you select Activate Experiments , a copy of your existing world will be created. The copy will have the same name as the original world with "Copy of..." added in front of it.

image showing a duplicated world

Verify that the World has Experimental Features Enabled

After you've created a world that has an experimental feature toggle enabled, your world will get a tag next to the game mode in your Worlds list that says Experimental .

image showcasing a survival world that has the Experimental tag applied

Another way to identify if your world is using experimental toggles is to visit the settings for your world. In the Game world settings, scroll down to the Experiments section to see which experiments are enabled.

Worlds that use experimental features cannot be restored to a non-experimental state.

I opened my world in 20w21a and in every snapshot and release after that, it keeps saying:

"Worlds using Experimental Settings are not supported

This world uses experimental settings that could stop working at any time. We cannot guarantee it will load or work. Here be dragons!"

Those experimental settings probably come from the fact that they've added custom world generation in that snapshot, which probably changed something in the way the map generates, or the way the file is written.

I want to change my world settings back to default , to make sure my map (which I've spent too many hours on) keeps on working in the future. I'm pretty good with modifying JSON files and I've used NBTexplorer many times in the past to change some things in my world. If anyone knows how to fix this, I need your help!

(I have backups of the world, but I've changed too many things around the world to start from my last backup, before 20w21a. If there is a file I could simply copy and paste from my latest backup (pre-20w21a) to my world (post-20w21a) to put the experimental settings back to the default settings, it would be great!)

Is it complaining about the experimental settings in 20w21a or are you trying to run it in some other version?

If it's working in 20w21a I'd say your best bet is to keep it there.

You almost certainly can't go back to an earlier version without corrupting the world, except by loading a backup, certainly make a backup before trying to run it in anything else.

If you can run it in the release of 1.16 (after making a backup) then try that.

This won't be any help in your current situation but you should never trust snapshots for worlds you care about, make a backup and accept that the snapshot is meant for temporary testing of the updates not for serious play.

It's most likely not just the settings themselves that would be a problem but the results on the world of running the game with those settings.

Hopefully somebody will come along that knows something about those experimental settings.

:P

I can run it in 1.16 but it keeps saying that warning: " This world uses experimental settings that could stop working at any time".

This is why I want to find a fix to put it back to how it was, to the default settings and not the experimental settings.

I found where the problem is:

In the section where you choose your world, click edit and now you have the option to do "Export World Generation Settings". In the JSON files that it gives you, you get this section:

1) (For the world that wasn't in 20w21a)

{ "bonus_chest": false, "dimensions": { "minecraft:overworld": { "type": "minecraft:overworld", "generator": { "biome_source": { "seed": 3880217131079144221, "large_biomes": false, "type": "minecraft:vanilla_layered" }, "seed": 3880217131079144221, "settings": "minecraft:overworld", "type": "minecraft:noise" } },

2) BUT, on the version opened on 20w21a, it looks like this: (the part in purple is what changed)

{ "bonus_chest": false, "dimensions": { "minecraft:overworld": { "type": "minecraft:overworld", "generator": { "biome_source": { "seed": 3880217131079144221, "legacy_biome_init_layer": true, "large_biomes": false, "type": "minecraft:vanilla_layered" }, "seed": 3880217131079144221, "settings": "minecraft:overworld", "type": "minecraft:noise" } },

I made 2 new worlds, by importing both of the world generation settings ( the one that had not been in 20w21a and the one that did ) and the first world generation setting didn't give the warning while opening the world while the script from 20w21a still gave the warning on the new world.

Now, I just need to figure out in which file I can find this line in my world folder, so I can remove it after : "legacy_biome_init_layer": true,

Please forgive me if I missed something; this page has a lot to read!

I exported the "worldgen_settings_export.json" file from my world, and not only does it not contain "legacy_biome_init_layer", it is quite large at 14.7 kB, as opposed to what xylonn72 posted. I've been playing on this world for over 5 years, and this isn't the first time something got broken and I had to fix it with NBT's and JSON's, but I'm completely lost as to what needs to be edited! In case it matters, it's a custom map that I play Survival on, and the original can be found here: https://www.planetminecraft.com/project/eldaria-island---custom-terrain-mc-10---end-portal/ (last updated for MC 1.6)

As I read it xylon72 only posted a section of their JSON file, cut down to the relevant portion.

So, are you saying you are having the same problem even though you don't have the presumed offending line in your JSON file?

I also had this problem, but I believe it was caused by my having originally created the world using customised settings pre 1.13.

In any case, I had exactly the same warning message pop up every time I loaded the world in 1.16+ and also had the "legacy_biome_init_layer": true," line in my exported world generation settings .json. I found the location of the offending line using NBTExplorer inside: level.dat/Data/WorldGenSettings/dimensions/minecraft:overworld/generator/biome_source and simply deleted it.

Now the world loads without first presenting me with the warning message. Maybe this helps someone, idk

How to play Experimental Features in Minecraft

follow icon

Minecraft allows players to access certain beta features in-game. But to experience it, they must switch on the experimental features button while creating their world. These features are still under development but can be used by players who wish to test them out. The players can then send feedback to the developers regarding the performance issues and bugs.

These features are not expected to work perfectly since they are under development and backing up of the world is advised. With the new snapshot released in Minecraft, many players are keen to give it a try.

However, to truly experience the totality of the released version, they will have to enable this feature. In this article, we will show how players from both Java and Bedrock versions can enable their Experimental Features in-game.

Experimental Features are just a click of a button away (Image via Mojang)

In order to experience the new 1.20.2 pre-release , players must first go to their Minecraft Launcher and download that version.

  • Once downloaded, they can click on Play and open their game.
  • Click on the Single Player option and the Create World.
  • Under the Game section, players will see an Experiments option.
  • Click on this button and enable the features you wish to try out.
  • Once you have completed this press on Create New World.
  • This world will have new features added to it.

How to turn on the Experimental Features in Bedrock Edition

The Bedrock edition UI is different from the Java version. To experience the new 1.20.40.20 preview players must download that from the Minecraft Launcher.

One toggle away from an Experimental Feature (Image via Mojang)

  • Launch the game from the Launcher.
  • Click on Play and under the Worlds column tap on Create New.
  • In the world settings, scroll down until you find the “Experiments” tab.
  • In this tab, it will show you all the features available for you to experiment with.
  • The Experiment tab will be divided into two sections: Gameplay and Add-On Creators.
  • Enable all the Gameplay buttons.
  • The Add-On Creators buttons can be activated if players have added a resource pack to the game.
  • To check which features have been enabled, you can check your game settings in the “Experiment” section.

Players on the Pocket Edition of Minecraft can also follow the same instructions to enable Experimental Features on their mobiles.

One thing players must keep in mind while playing with Experimental Features is that their world can crash at any time. So do not get too attached to this world as there is a likely chance of it getting corrupted. That said, this feature allows players to enjoy new Minecraft content prior to its release and decide whether they like it or not.

After upgrading to 1.16 I get a warning about "experimental settings"

After I upgraded to 1.16 I suddenly get a warning when I try to start my world:

enter image description here

People say this is because I've enabled snapshots, but I done that since forever and never had a warning like this before 1.16. And now I'm getting a little concerned that my world might be corrupted or something.

Is the warning really caused by enabling snapshots? Is there any way to get rid of it? Could this be a bug? Could my world be corrupted?

The warning is indeed caused by enabling snapshots. Snapshots are intermediate releases that aren't tested properly. A snapshot may contain game breaking bugs like accidentally regenerating chunks in your worlds. It might be highly unstable, where certain new mobs may crash your game. Like, hard crash to desktop because an error occured that Java is unable to deal with. A snapshot might have basic things like jumping or mining broken. And there is no guarantee that things you've done in older versions still work in the snapshot version.

Snapshots are meant for enterprising players who want to play with the newest of the new content and aren't bothered if a bug ends up corrupting their world or destroying hours of their work. They just clarified that in 1.16 so people who may have accidentally enabled them are aware that they're using experimental settings that may end up ruining their world.

  • I see. In that case I really wish they added some way to undo the experimental settings. Like if you load your previously snapshot-enabled world in a non-snapshot release - you could scan for compatibility issues or something like that. Then, if the world was found to be "clean" and you disabled snapshots from there on - the warning would disappear. Like when they added that "optimize world" tool a while back. Something similar for this would be great. –  o01 Commented Jul 8, 2020 at 20:57
  • No, this is not the correct answer. The warning for snapshots is different. –  Fabian Röling Commented Sep 20, 2020 at 14:17

The world you're trying to open is using Customised world generation ( archive ). These are still in an early development stage (and for some reason already included in full releases), so your world might not work correctly if you use them, especially if you load it after having created it in a different snapshot/release.

Minecraft Snapshot 24w35a

A Minecraft Java Snapshot

Hello! In this week's snapshot we have addressed some important bugs related to village raid spawns, Bundles and Redstone.

Happy mining!

Experimental Features

  • Selecting items in a Bundle is now only done by scrolling
Developer's Note : In previous snapshots you could select items in a Bundle with the number keys. We removed this because it was conflicting with hotkeys used by expert players, and it was not as useful now that the Bundle can have more than 10 items visible.
  • Raiders must find a place to spawn no more than 96 blocks vertically above or below the village center, or a raid will not start
  • It is now much less likely for raiders to not find a valid place to spawn when raiding

Technical Changes

  • The Data Pack version is now 51

Data Pack Version 51

  • This allows for easier customization of Trial Spawner configurations in data packs
  • Inlined configuration data is still supported
  • Entities' rotation on the x axis is now clamped between -90 and 90
  • loot command now returns an error when trying to drop from block without loot table (like air)

Loot tables

  • Special loot table empty has been removed and is no longer defined in vanilla data pack

Sheep loot tables

  • Sheep now always uses a single loot table entities/sheep
  • Note: mutton drop is now controlled by the main table, while sub-tables are responsible only for wool drop
  • Sheep shearing is now controlled by loot table found as shearing/sheep

Mooshroom shearing loot table

  • Mooshroom shearing is now controlled by loot table found as shearing/mooshroom

New conditions

Sheep entity sub-predicate.

New entity sub-predicate for testing sheep wool Fields:

  • sheared - optional boolean
  • color - optional wool dye color

"World using Experimental setting are not supported"

I need help. I recently updated to 1.18.2 and downloaded all my mods to use with it, including, Optifine and Terralith. Upon loading up a new world I am shown the following message.

"This world uses experimental setting that could stop working at any time. We cannot guarantee it will load or work. Here be dragons!"

"This message will not show again for this world."

And there are two options responding to this: "Proceed" or "Cancel".

Upon saving world, the made world will have a warning sign next to it. It's a yellow triangle with a exclamation point within it.
