Fintech has the potential of promoting financial inclusion in terms of secured digital payments, financing, InsureTech, and investments through crowdfunding and P2P lending to unserved or less served businesses, start-ups, and segments of the population. Fintech is deployed using the latest technologies such as big data analytics, clouds, Internet of Things, blockchain, and artificial intelligence to provide highly secured, instant, easy-to-access, easy-to-use, low-cost, and finally more customer-centric financial services and products. For Fintech to boost Islamic financial inclusion, shariah compatibility in the applications is necessary. Empirical evidence shows that Pakistan is a highly financially exclusive country. This study provides an overview of financial inclusion and digital finance status in Pakistan, a comparative analysis of information and communication technologies (ICT) environment, and Pakistan’s performance in ICTs. This study elucidates the potential of Fintech applications and proposes a pragmatic scheme to develop a Fintech ecosystem capable of achieving the goal of financial inclusion in Pakistan.

The financial performance measurement is a vital part of every business. And the telecom sector is not apart from it. The telecomm companies needs to observe their competitive financial health along with their customer base. The future of the existence of any company depends upon the present financial position. In this article the financial health of major telecom service providers in India has been evaluated by using ratios. Introduction: In the telecom sector, where the main motive is to earn high profits the financial performance of the organization is most important indicator to evaluate the overall health of the organization. In the current research to examine the financial performance of the companies the ratios has been calculated for each of the selected telecom companies. The first ratio is the return on assets which is the one of the profitability ratio. The firm is expected to be in profits if the return on assets is higher than the cost of borrowing. So the return on assets (ROA) will help us to examine whether the telecom companies are earning enough profit or not. The second ratio included to examine the financial performance of the telecom companies is the debt equity ratio, which shows out of the total fund how much is raised through issues of shares and how much have been borrowed. High debt equity ratio shows that the company has been raising fund through debt where the firm has to pay fixed interest rate irrespective of the profits, which is not consider to be appropriate.

The financial ratio analysis is considered as a powerful tool to illustrate the relative measures of a firm's financial strengths and weaknesses and is an indicator of potential problems of different aspects of a company's operations. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the financial performance with the help of ratio analysis of the leading telecom giants in India viz. Airtel, BSNL, Idea, Reliance Communications and Tata Communications. The key financial ratios used to estimate the financial behaviour of telecom companies are profitability ratios, liquidity ratios, solvency ratios and efficiency ratios. The data used to calculate the ratios were collected from companies' annual reports between 2009 and 2014, using the internet as the primary medium. The analysis done reveals that Airtel and Idea dominate Reliance Communications, BSNL and Tata Communications in data revenue growth and subscriber base.

A harbor in the tempest: megaprojects, identity, and the politics of place in Gwadar, Pakistan
Access full-text files, journal title, journal issn, volume title.
This dissertation seeks to understand the ways in which Pakistani government’s attempts to initiate large-scale infrastructure development projects in Balochistan Province have transformed its social and political landscape. Ethnographically, the study focuses on Gwadar, a small coastal town in Pakistan’s western Balochistan Province to show how colonial and postcolonial projects of progress and development suppress or subsume other kinds of lived geographies and imaginations of place. Keeping in mind the centrality of everyday experiences in generating social forms, this dissertation describes how development, transnationalism, and ethnic identity are (re)configured. It is based on ethnographic encounters that foreground the lived experiences and imaginations of fishermen from Med kinship and occupational group who occupy a subaltern position within the local status hierarchy in Gwadar. On the one hand, the promise of becoming modern citizens of the future mega city incites new desires and longings among those fishermen that facilitate their incorporation into emergent regimes of labor and entrepreneurship. On the other hand, Pakistani security forces have tightened their control over the local population by establishing a cordon sanitaire around Gwadar Port and the town. These mechanisms of control have disrupted local fishermen s experiences of place and intimate sociality and introduced elements of exclusion, fear, and paranoia. By interrupting the fishermen s expectations of their rightful place in the city, it compels them to think of alternate ways to confront the state’s development agenda, including peaceful protest and armed struggle. The dissertation concludes, tentatively, that the imposition of political violence by state authorities that accompanies the structural violence of mega infrastructure projects tends to create a mirror effect whereby the victims of development adopt a language of violence and a different idiom of identity.

Inclusive Insurance and Risk Financing in Pakistan: Snapshot and Way Forward 2024
Inclusive Insurance and Risk Financing in Pakistan
September 3, 2024
Pakistan faces a plethora of natural disaster risks, which include floods, droughts, earthquakes, tropical cyclones, heat waves and glacial lake outburst floods, making it one of the top ten countries in the world most exposed to a wide range of natural disasters. The increasing frequency and severity of disasters, exacerbated by limited coping capacity, has historically been a major fiscal challenge for the government. Although a comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Regulatory and Institutional Framework is in place but its focus is primarily on Disaster Risk Reduction measures & Post-disaster Operations, with Disaster Risk Finance, remaining the missing link. As a result, most of the large natural disaster risks are still being retained on government books with negligible budget allocations. This huge funding gap is aggravated by a severe protection gap, created by the low insurance penetration in the country, which stands at a mere 0.87% of its GDP. Whereas natural disaster insurance premium written primarily for the financial sector, amounted to PKR 48.8 billion for the year 2022, the total inclusive insurance premium was PKR 4.3 billion with only 17.5 million insured lives.[1]
Fully cognizant of the rising fiscal pressure caused by the absence of disaster risk finance instruments, and increasing vulnerable population, the government has recently approved the National Disaster Risk Financing Strategy (NDRFS)) which recommends the deployment of sovereign and private sector risk transfer instruments for fiscal resilience. The launch of ‘Pakistan Diagnostic Summary Report’ by IRRF, demonstrates its commitment to support this important government initiative, by presenting a high- level overview of the current status of inclusive insurance and disaster risk financing in Pakistan, along with a set of recommendations, which aim to facilitate informed decision making by policy makers.

Applied dna bags lrqa isotopic testing pilot project in pakistan.
Under the terms of the subcontract, Applied DNA, together with its traceability partner, Isotech (a Stratum Reservoir company), will employ CertainT to conduct isotopic testing and analysis to support cotton traceability in Pakistan.
The financial terms of the subcontract were not disclosed.
Applied DNA explained the project engages with trace experts, global brands, Pakistan’s cotton sector, and worker organisations to design, implement, and assess the pilot trace tool to improve its future application and develop publicly available commodity-agnostic trace resources for enhanced due diligence.
The subcontract was said to have been issued in support of the Global Trace Protocol project, a US Department of Labour-funded initiative implemented by LRQA (known as ELEVATE during the project’s inception) that is designed to reduce child and forced labour in global supply chains through traceability.
Applied DNA said the company along with Isotech will use best practices in the isotopic analysis of raw materials and products at key points in the cotton textile value chain to align with the project's overarching goals.
Some of the testing components include the use of isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) on samples from farms, gins, yarn spinners, and mills/manufacturing units identified by the project.
CertainT will establish a baseline as part of the framework pilot project for isotope testing and analyses.
According to LRQA's director of the Global Trace Protocol project Jeff Wheeler, new import regulations and legislation now require extra documentation to verify cotton origin and ensure that cotton does not come from high-risk sources.
Wheeler said: "The Global Trace Protocol project is developing traceability technology tools that provide greater transparency and integrity to textile value chains globally, including through our work with Applied DNA."
Applied DNA's vice president MeiLin Wan added: "Our CertainT platform employs isotope testing as well as DNA tagging and genomic testing as forensic authentication technologies to establish traceability to prove origin. Our recent announcement with Indus Apparel of isotope testing with DNA tagging showcases the scalability and accessibility of cotton authentication technologies that will also help Pakistan’s cotton industry to enable compliance with US import regulations and similar enforcement in other geographies."
Applied DNA's CertainT is a textiles traceability platform that uses forensic, multiple-proof-point evidence to enable source and authenticity verification of materials and products at any point as they are transformed through global supply chains.
LRQA is described as having decades of expertise in assessment, advisory, inspection, and cybersecurity services.
In 2021 Applied DNA collaborated with Stratum Reservoir (Isotech) , a specialist in laboratory staple isotope analysis – a technique used for fingerprinting naturally occurring organic compounds such as cotton – to bolster cotton traceability research.
"Applied DNA bags LRQA isotopic testing pilot project in Pakistan" was originally created and published by Just Style , a GlobalData owned brand.

Wall Street surges, follows European stocks higher on rate cut hopes
U.S. stocks moved higher on Monday, following their European counterparts, as markets looked ahead to key data and actions from central banks.
There's a major flaw in the stock market's most bullish thesis
- Money market funds won't save the stock market from a painful decline, Bank of America says.
- A 25-basis point Fed rate cut won't change the behavior of savers, according to the bank.
- If cash does leave money market funds, it won't flow to stocks.
The $6 trillion in money market funds will not save the stock market from a painful decline.
A common component of the bullish thesis for stocks over the past year is that trillions of dollars of sidelined cash are set to flood the stock market once the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates, putting downward pressure on the juicy, risk-free 5% yield most money market funds offer.
But Bank of America says not so fast, offering two structural reasons money market funds won't be the catalyst for a continued bull rally many investors expect.
First, a measly 25-basis point interest rate cut from the Fed likely won't change the behavior of savers, as a cash yield of closer to 4% would still be a lot better than near-0% rates offered from 2009 through 2021.
An interest rate decline of hundreds of basis points wouldn't do the trick either, according to the bank.
"Historically, MMF [Money Market Fund] AUM growth y/y is typically positive unless front-end rates <2%," Bank of America rates strategist Mark Cabana said in a note on Thursday.
According to Cabana, for money market funds to see negative outflows, the Fed would need to cut rates by at least 300 basis points, and that's not scheduled to happen anytime soon.
"Fed cuts will see MMF inflows slow but remain positive unless rates near zero," Cabana said.
The December 2025 target for the federal funds rate is just above 3%, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.
The second issue is that even if the Fed were to substantially cut interest rates and spark a wave of redemptions from money market funds, that cash probably wouldn't flow into the stock market.
According to Cabana, bonds would be the big beneficiary instead because money market funds compete mainly with checking accounts that offer near 0% yields rather than stocks.
"If MMF outflows happen cash likely to move into higher yielding fixed income, not equities. MMF to equities = bridge too far," Cabana said.
Stock market bulls should ultimately retire the idea that trillions of dollars of money market funds will help buoy stock prices, the analysts said.
"MMF cash should remain sidelined from a risk taking perspective," Cabana concluded.

Thousands rally in Pakistan for release of former prime minister Khan
Thousands rallied in the Pakistani capital on Sunday demanding release of former prime minister Imran Khan, who has been behind bars for more than a year, amid a deepening political turmoil in the country.
Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party organized the rally, marking its first show of power since the disputed February general elections.
Local media did not provide live coverage of the event, held on the outskirts of the capital. Images and videos posted on the social media platform X show Khan’s supporters marching towards the capital from various parts of the country.
The PTI accused authorities of harassing workers to suppress attendance at the rally. The city's administration blocked key entry points into Islamabad, with shipping containers and riot police deployed to prevent possible unrest.
"We will not rest until Khan is released from jail,” said Khan’s close aide Hammad Azhar in the opening speech that set the tone of the rally.
Khan is the only person who can save this country from the clutches of corrupt and incompetent politicians, said Salman Akram Raja, a prominent lawyer and PTI leader from Lahore.
Khan has been in jail since August 2023 and is facing trial for allegedly inciting violence on May 9 of that year - the day when his supporters went on a rampage and attacked military installations, something that had never happened before.
Khan denies the allegations. All of his convictions have been either suspended or overturned in recent months.
However, an unprecedented arrest and subsequent court martial of a former spy chief, who is widely believed to have been close to Khan when he was prime minister, has complicated his case.
Chinese budget smartphone brand Transsion says finance head detained in investigation
The shenzhen-based firm, which makes handsets targeting developing markets such as africa, did not say why its financial director is being investigated.
The Shenzhen-based budget handset maker said it received notice on Friday of a lien and a case filing issued by the district supervisory committee of Dandong, a city in northeastern Liaoning province, claiming its financial director Xiao Yonghui was detained as part of an investigation.
“As of the filing date, the company is not aware of the progress or conclusion of the investigation,” it said in its filing with the Shanghai Stock Exchange. It did not specify why Xiao is being investigated.
The company’s board said in the filing that the it has a comprehensive governance and internal control structure, and the incident will not have a significant impact on operations.
Transsion did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday.
