who is king von

Bennett gained widespread recognition for his singles "Crazy Story" and "Took Her to the O," both reaching the forty-fourth position on the Billboard Hot 100. His studio album "Welcome to O'Block" (2020) also achieved significant success, ranking fifth on the Billboard 200.

The tragic death of Chicago rapper King Von in 2020 marked a significant and pivotal moment in the world of drill music, leaving behind a remarkably talented lyricist. Two years later, his first posthumous album, "What It Means To Be King," was released, followed by the second album titled "Grandson" on July 14.

The lead single, "Heartless," features the classic Von style, accompanied by Detroit's Tee Grizzley. Set to a twinkling beat with hints of a horror movie theme and a jack-in-the-box melody, Von delivers his trademark intense threats, while Grizzley's approach adds a compelling sense of restraint that remains equally formidable.

Dayvon Bennett, better known as the rapper King Von .

Updated Sat. Nov. 7, 6:40 p.m.

King Von, a Chicago rapper who found success in his city before relocating to Atlanta, was shot and killed early Friday morning. A fight in the parking lot of the Monaco Hookah Lounge on Trinity Avenue in the city sparked a shootout between two groups, according to police. He was 26.

On Saturday, APD said it had issued a warrant for a suspect in King Von's killing, and that the suspect was being treated for a gunshot wound at Grady Hospital in Atlanta. "The homicide of Bennett is closed with this arrest," the APD wrote in a statement.

In the early hours of Friday, authorities were still trying to piece together how the rapper, born Dayvon Daquan Bennett, died, and whether the Atlanta Police Department was involved in his death, or that of two other men who were also fatally wounded.

In a statement provided to NPR on Friday, APD says that "King Von was shot and killed during this morning's shooting and we are seeing rumors being spread indicating he was shot and killed by APD officers. At this time, our investigators believe Mr. Bennett was shot during the initial shootout between the two groups of males, prior to police responding and attempting to stop the shooting. Additionally, Mr. Bennett was not located at the scene, but arrived at a hospital shortly after the shooting, via private vehicle. The investigation into this incident remains open and very active."

View this post on Instagram I woke up to some very horrible news this morning-My heart is heavy.Another young rising star gone too soon.I pray for your family lil bro.May God rest your soul.We were just getting started 😔🖤 We have to find a better way. There is too much senseless violence. This has to stop.God help us.#RipKingVon A post shared by GHAZI ® (@ghazi)on Nov 6,2020 at 9:31am PST

Von's death reverberated quickly, first starting as a rumor on Twitter before being confirmed by sources close to the rapper. Ghazi Shami, the CEO and founder of Empire, Von's record label first appeared to confirm the news with an Instagram tribute this morning (right).

Bennett was born in the Parkway Gardens neighborhood of Chicago in 1994, and though he retreated to Atlanta to find peace and escape his hometown, his trouble with the law never truly escaped him. Many of his most popular songs paid tribute to Chicago; he was best known as a chronicler of street life, building narratives of tense nights on the streets and his desire to escape the gangster's mentality.

The last time I spoke with King Von, he was lamenting his current situation as an Atlanta resident, unable to spend time in his hometown of Chicago because cops and opps were too familiar with his moves. He missed home, but was comfortable in Atlanta. The rap scene in the city is, after all, the most prominent in the nation, and as one of the industry's quickest rising stars, Von commanded a presence rarely given to outsiders. The way he explained his situation at the time made sense.

"I love Atlanta because I can live there with no problems and s***, and that's where there are more rappers," he explained, in an interview for Passion of the Weiss . "I like Chicago better though because I have my people out there, but the police know me too well in Chicago and there are people that don't like me."

Von existed in the post-drill landscape of Chicago rap, indebted to first generation stars like G Herbo, Chief Keef and King Louie, but intent on carving his own stylistic aesthetics into the genre. His songs are narrative, with a dead-eye nihilism softened by the humor and empathy brought to his rhymes. One of his biggest hits, 2020's " Took Her to the O ," from the album Levon James he released back in March, finds Von narrating a night on the town with a girl, constantly having to thwart haters, rival gang members and those jealous of his stardom. "I bust a U, pulled up to her spot, she live by the park / It's gettin' dark, my Glock on my lap, I'm just thinkin' smart." Few rappers are able to make songs that bring relatability to the stress, trauma and pain that comes with growing up in inner-city Chicago, a target of police and neighborhood rulers alike.

But Von had found a way out thanks to his rap success: He'd occasionally go back to his Parkway Gardens neighborhood in Chicago with wads of cash, and give them to families and kids in need.

Von's death is a tragedy in any context, but that it came just one week after the release of a new album, Welcome to O'Block – the title of which makes it all the more clearer how strongly Von yearned to return home, to make amends with those that had wronged him and infuse his community with a strong, inspiring presence. This was already a banner year for Von, and the release of O'Block was likely to be a celebratory cap on his ascent to rap's upper echelon.

One of his biggest hits, " Crazy Story ," encapsulates everything that made him the next voice of Chicago rap. It's both witty and tragic, stuck between glorifying violence and lamenting the fact that it ever had to come to this: "I grab my Glock, it been through a lot, but it still shoot like new / We at the top, yeah we lost a lot, but that just how it go." King Von knew how quickly success could come, but more importantly, how conspiring forces could make it go away in an instant.

Quando Rondo Speaks to Angela Yee on Incident That Led to King Von Shooting

In a new interview with Angela Yee, rapper Quando Rondo has opened up with his side of the story from the night King Von was fatally shot in Atlanta.

king von speech

View this video on YouTube

Entitled “November 6th,” the same date Von was shot and killed, the interview is the first of multiple parts. Explaining what happened from his perspective, Quando Rondo explained what lead up to the shooting. “I walked to the car, I tell my brother, I say, ‘it’s this amount to park right here,’” he said, talking about Timothy ‘Lul Tim’ Leeks, the rapper who allegedly shot Von. “I said, ‘I’m not going in the club. Find you a lil female or whatever, you got fifteen minutes ‘cuz. Then I’m dipping. We ‘bout to go to the house.’”

Rondo has maintained that he was sleeping in the car before the shooting happened. After he slept for a bit, he said he walked from the car to see “a group of people” coming toward him.

“In my mind, I’m just thinking regular, in reality like you would think. I’m about to let these people walk past me. I’m not about to try and go through these people or nothing like that,” he continued. “I’m thinking these were some regular individuals. … So I’m letting this group come by. Next thing you know, a n***a hit me. Boom bow. I lie to you not. It’s like I had an out-of-body experience.”

The interview wraps up there for now, but throughout Rondo does not name Lul Tim or King Von directly. TMZ reports that Quando Rondo’s woke up to see the altercation already going down, with Von allegedly approaching him and his crew aggressively.

Quando Rondo has previously said that him and his crew acted in self-defense. Surveillance videos showed Rondo helping Lul Tim, who was charged for the murder of Von, get to the hospital. He has also since expressed his support for him on social media and on his song “ End of Story ,” a move which was met with criticism.

The interview comes shortly after the rapper seemingly dissed King Von during his virtual concert. “He got caught without that pole and now that bitch ass n***a gone,” Rondo said in a clip that surfaced on social media. “I’ll piss on his grave.” Before he died, Von was similarly criticized for dissing the dead in his music, particuarly when he disrespected late 15-year-old Shondale “Tooka” Gregory in a song.

In the wake of the deadly shooting, a number of Quando Rondo’s shows were shut down by local authorities due to concerns of violence. Lul Tim was released on bond last month, and when close King Von associate Lil Reese was asked how he felt about it, he didn’t mince his words. “We gon’ roll his ass up real soon,” he said. “On my momma. Roll his ass right up. Big ass Backwoods. Big ass Backwoods, we gon’ roll his ass up.”

About king von.

Dayvon Daquan Bennett (born August 9, 1994; died November 6, 2020), better known by his stage name King Von, began rapping in 2018, after beating a murder case in December 2017 . In a year’s time, he managed to attain significant success, signing with his lifelong friend, Lil Durk , and reaching over eight million views on the “Crazy Story” music video in 2019.

Von was originally from Parkway Gardens , popularly known as “O'Block”, which has been deemed the most dangerous neighborhood in Chicago , but moved to Atlanta following his rapid music success. A respected figure in the Chicago gangland, he declared himself “Grandson” of David Barksdale, the founder of the Black Disciples gang of which King Von was allegedly a member.

The “Grandson” moniker was the inspiration for Von’s debut mixtape, Grandson, Vol. 1 which featured “Crazy Story,” “Crazy Story 2.0,” and “Crazy Story, Pt. 3” including features from Lil Durk and Booka600 .

2020 was an extremely valuable year for Von, on February 21, 2020, Von had released “Took Her to the O” , an interpolation of “Crazy Story”. The track had been one of the most beneficial tracks in Von’s career. It was released on Von’s sophomore mixtape, Levon James with features from YNW Melly , Tee Grizzley , and NLE Choppa . On October 30, 2020, Von released his debut album Welcome to O'Block having features from Polo G , Moneybagg Yo , and Fivio Foreign .

However, on November 6, 2020, Von was shot and killed by armed individuals in downtown Atlanta after a clash between two groups outside a nightclub. It is believed that he was not shot and killed by Atlanta Police Department officers , but rather by associates of fellow rapper Quando Rondo . He was 26 at the time of his death.

Over a year after his death, Von’s debut posthumous album, What It Means To Be King was released in March 2022. The album, dedicated to Von’s king-like title, featured notable acts such as Lil Durk, Fivio Foreign, G Herbo , and A Boogie wit da Hoodie .

  • Trivia Nine weeks before filming began, Lionel Logue's grandson, Mark Logue , discovered a large box in his attic that contained his grandfather's personal papers. The box held Lionel Logue's diary, his appointment book, notes from his speech therapy sessions with King George VI , and over 100 personal letters to Logue from the King. It also contained what is believed to be the actual copy of the speech used by George VI in his 1939 radio broadcast announcing the declaration of war with Germany. Mark Logue turned his grandfather's papers, letters, and diary over to director Tom Hooper and screenwriter David Seidler , who used them to flesh out the relationship between Logue and the King. Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth also read through the material for insight into their characters. The exchange in this movie between Logue and King George VI following his radio speech ("You still stammered on the 'W'." / "Well, I had to throw in a few so they knew it was me.") was taken directly from Logue's diary. Firth insisted that it should be included in the movie.
  • Goofs In the final speech, King George VI has one blue eye and one brown eye. Colin Firth had lost a contact lens.

King George VI : All that... work... down the drain. My own... b... brother, I couldn't say a single w-word to him in reply.

Lionel Logue : Why do you stammer so much more with David than you ever do with me?

King George VI : 'Cos you're b... bloody well paid to listen.

Lionel Logue : Bertie, I'm not a geisha girl.

King George VI : Stop trying to be so bloody clever.

Lionel Logue : What is it about David that stops you speaking?

King George VI : What is it about you that bloody well makes you want to go on about it the whole bloody time?

Lionel Logue : Vulgar, but fluent; you don't stammer when you swear.

King George VI : Oh, bugger off!

Lionel Logue : Is that the best you can do?

King George VI : [like an elocution lesson] Well... bloody bugger to you, you beastly bastard.

Lionel Logue : Oh, a public school prig could do better than that.

King George VI : Shit. Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit!

Lionel Logue : Yes!

King George VI : Shit!

Lionel Logue : Defecation flows trippingly from the tongue!

King George VI : Because I'm angry!

Lionel Logue : Do you know the f-word?

King George VI : F... f... fornication?

Lionel Logue : Oh, Bertie.

King George VI : Fuck. Fuck! Fuck, fuck, fuck and fuck! Fuck, fuck and bugger! Bugger, bugger, buggerty buggerty buggerty, fuck, fuck, arse!

Lionel Logue : Yes...

King George VI : Balls, balls...

Lionel Logue : ...you see, not a hesitation!

King George VI : ...fuckity, shit, shit, fuck and willy. Willy, shit and fuck and... tits.

Rising Chicago rapper King Von was shot and killed in a scuffle outside an Atlanta club early Friday morning, November 6th. He was 26.

Ghazi Shami, the founder of Von’s label, Empire, confirmed his death on Instagram : writing, “I woke up to some very horrible news this morning — my heart is heavy. Another young rising star gone too soon. I pray for your family lil bro. May God rest your soul. We were just getting started. We have to find a better way. There is too much senseless violence. This has to stop. God help us.”

Empire also shared a statement, saying: “We are devastated by the untimely passing of King Von. He was a loving father, dedicated member of his community, and an amazing talent that just started to scratch the surface of his boundless potential. Von overcame incredibly challenging circumstances as a young man but never lost sight of what it meant to give back and uplift his community — O’Block. We are fortunate to have witnessed his growth and evolution but know he had so much more to give to the world. The Empire family offers our condolences to his family, friends, team, and fans during this very difficult time.”

The Atlanta Police Department told Rolling Stone that the incident took place outside a hookah bar at around 3:20 a.m., when an argument between two groups of men broke out and gunfire soon followed. Two off-duty police officers were working security at the bar at the time; one of them, along with an on-duty APD officer on patrol nearby, confronted the group and additional shots were fired during the encounter. Three people involved in the incident have died as a result of gunshot wounds, while three others are being treated in area hospitals.

The APD added: “It is our understanding Dayvon Bennett, a.k.a. King Von, was shot and killed during this morning’s shooting.” They also addressed rumors that Bennett was shot and killed by APD officers, saying: “At this time, our investigators believe Mr. Bennett was shot during the initial shootout between the two groups of males, prior to police responding and attempting to stop the shooting. Additionally, Mr. Bennett was not located at the scene, but arrived at a hospital shortly after the shooting, via private vehicle.”
