Below you find information about all types of scientific papers that are written in the different courses of study at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. These papers include project research papers, bachelor's theses, and master's theses. All information can also be found in the respective examination regulations for the bachelor ’s programs and the master ‘s programs. The examination regulations are only available in German.
General informations
Where can the thesis be written.
Typically, research papers and projects are completed at a research institute of the faculties offering the course of study. In addition, it is possible to complete a paper or project at an external institution.
External institutions include all institutions, institutes, universities, and industry companies that are not part of the faculties offering the course of study. Generally all external work must be approved by the Examination Board and issued and supervised by a chair of Faculty 4. Course-specific exceptions are listed below.
Who supervises the work?
The supervising professor (betreuende:r Professor:in) is typically a professor or private lecturer of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering or of the School of Business and Economics (only Business Administration and Engineering students) at RWTH Aachen University. An external supervisor (externe_r Betreuer_in) is a supervisor at the site of the external project or paper (e.g., heads of department, a professor at another faculty). External supervisors can only act as second examiners if they are professors or private lecturers at a German academic university and are appointed as such by the relevant examination board. In all other cases, the faculty-internal supervisor and a second examiner issue the grade.
For students of Business Administration and Engineering, interdisciplinary scientific theses whose topics include both engineering and economics can be jointly supervised by a professor from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and a professor from the School of Business and Economics. Both professors determine the first and second supervisor of the thesis and participate jointly in the final colloquium. The first supervisor determines the formal requirements for the scientific work in consultation with the second supervisor.
How do I register my thesis?
You will find the corresponding registration forms (Erfassungsbogen) in our download section below. These must always be completed in full and signed in the order indicated (large numbers in the signature fields). Business Administration and Engineering students whose topic for the thesis is purely economic and is issued by a professor of Faculty 8 do not need the approval of the specialization supervisor. The registration deadline is generally the date on which the registration form is signed by the professor supervising the student.
What do I have to consider if I want to write my thesis externally?
If you want to write your thesis externally, approval must be obtained from the Examination Board. Registration forms (Erfassungsbogen) of external theses can be submitted by email , sent to the faculty by mail or dropped into the "red mailbox" (Eilfschornsteinstraße 18, 52062 Aachen, first floor). Documents should not be additionally submitted as originals if they have already been sent to the Examination Board by email. Digitally submitted registration forms must be signed or digitally signed.
After processing by the Examination Board, the registration form will be returned to you by email. A copy of the document will also be sent directly to the ZPA so that your thesis can be registered in the campus management system and the deadline can be announced.
Where can I find postings for papers and theses?
A list of announced scientific papers of the chairs and institutes of Faculty 4 can be found here .
By when must the module component Scientific Integrity be completed?
According to §16 (2) of the General Exam Regulations (Übergreifende Prüfungsordnung/ÜPO) and to §19 (2) of the General Exam Regulations for the Teacher Training Master's Degree Program for Gymnasium and Gesamtschule Teachers as well as Vocational School Teachers (ÜPO M. Ed.) at RWTH Aachen University, successful completion of the Scientific Integrity module component is a prerequisite for registration of the Master's thesis for all students who have enrolled in a Master’s degree program in winter semester 2020/21 or later.
Students register to the Online Course “Scientific Integrity” via the associated RWTHonline course. Further information can be found here .
How do I apply for an extension of the project or thesis?
An extension of the editing time of an academic paper by two weeks is possible informally and directly via the Central Examination Office (ZPA).
For a further extension, you must submit an informal application to the Examination Board.
For medical reasons, please enclose proof of inability to study and take exam. A certificate of incapacity for work is not sufficient.
For an extension for other reasons, you definitely need a written authorisation from your (internal) supervising professor stating that the delay is not your fault. Please also read the relevant paragraph in your examination regulations.
Please submit the informal application via PAnter (Examination Board Application Registration).
The notification of your application will also be made available via PAnter. A copy of the decision will be sent directly to the ZPA. You will be notified as soon as the decision is available. Please refrain from enquiries regarding the processing status.
Applications are also processed outside the meetings of the Examination Board and are therefore not tied to the meeting dates.
If you have any further questions, please contact the Study Counseling Service by email or in person during office hours .

Students can commence with their Master thesis when the admission requirements of the respective Examination Regulations have been fulfilled. The form required for registering the Master thesis is available from the Central Examination Office (ZPA), which will also check fulfillment of the admission requirements. Only in exceptional cases will the ZPA grant admission before fulfillment of the admission requirements, e.g. when only one mandatory module still has to be completed. In such cases, a written application must be made to the Examination Board. The application must have been approved beforehand by the academic member of staff who provided the topic for the Master thesis
The required form for registering the Master thesis needs to be signed by the student, the professor, the chairperson of the Examination Board, and the Central Examination Office (ZPA). Due to this procedure, approximately 2 weeks will elapse before the registration process is complete.
The completed Master thesis must be submitted threefold:
- two (paper-based) copies including a digital version for both of the assessors
- one digital version (preferably a CD) for the archives
The three versions are submitted to the Central Examination Office, which will check that the submission deadline has been complied with
Please use the following Form for the digital CD version

This quick guide describes how to proof master theses in RWTH Publications.
Preliminary note
Bachelor's and Master's theses are not subject to mandatory publication. They can, however, be indexed in RWTH Publications with the metadata as well as entered and published in full text according to the Open Access model.
The publication of a thesis is a condition for its entry in RWTH Publications. This is the case if the thesis is listed in a library catalogue (KatalogPlus or institute catalogue). It should be noted that a published thesis must be accessible to everyone, this also applies within locked institute offices or similar, provided that access can be made possible in principle.
- Fill out the online form in RWTH Publications.
- If you want to publish an abstract, we need an Author's Agreement . The Author's Agreement is displayed at the end of the form. With the Author's Agreement you transfer the simple right of use to the library to distribute your abstract on the internet. Note: We accept Author's Agreements in written form (printed out and signed in the original) or in electronic form. Author's Agreements in electronic form must be signed with either a Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) or an Advanced Electronic Signature (FES). The signature can be created using a certificate from the DFN-PKI or GEANT from GÉANT/TCS (RWTH Aachen University), for example (see instructions ). Please note that for legal reasons we are not allowed to accept Author's Agreement with only a simple electronic signature or a scanned signature.
