The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) is pleased to invite suitable applications for its prestigious PhD Fellowships for the year 2025. CARTA is a collaborative initiative involving eight African universities, four African research institutes, and eight non-African partners. Our mission is to bolster the capacity of African institutions to conduct globally competitive research, with a particular focus on addressing health and development challenges in the region.

About the CARTA PhD Fellowship

As part of its innovations, CARTA offers a collaborative doctoral training program in public and population health. This program has been developed in response to the great challenges faced by Africa’s institutions of higher education in addressing the training and retention of the next generation of academics in the region. Specifically, CARTA seeks to fund candidates who will be future leaders in their institutions. That is, young, capable, and committed individuals who, in time, will ensure that their universities will be the institutions of choice for future generations of academics and university administrators wishing to make a positive impact on public and population health in Africa.

By Maureen Agena and Agaba Issa Mugabo

Makerere University (Mak) and the University of Namibia (UNAM), on 13 August, 2024, renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaborative academia and industry research.

The two partnering universities are both members of the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), an organization of 170 universities in 40 countries across Africa hosted by the Government of Uganda at Makerere University .

The signing of the MoU was on the sidelines of the second RUFORUM Triennial Conference taking place from 12-16 August, 2024 in Windhoek, Namibia under the theme “Operationalising Higher Agricultural Education and Research Ecosystems for Innovation, Industrialisation, and Economic Development in Africa: A Call for Action.” The Conference is also a landmark celebration for RUFORUM’s 20 th anniversary.

Relatedly, the African Union (AUC) and European Union (EU) have agreed on an EU-Africa strategy within the Global Gateway, which aims to mobilise up to €300 billion in investments through a team Europe approach, bringing together the EU, its member states and their financial and development institutions. It seeks a transformational impact in the digital, climate and energy, transport, health, and education and research sectors. Part of that investment is an allocation of €978 million for intra-Africa mobility, open to all African universities and accessed on competitive basis.

Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe (Left) and Prof. Kenneth Matengo (Right) address the audience at the event. Renewal of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Makerere University and University of Namibia (UNAM) on 13th August 2024 on the sidelines of the Second RUFORUM Triennial Conference hosted by the Government of Namibia and RUFORUM member Universities in Namibia, 12-16 August, 2024, Windhoek under the theme “Operationalising Higher Agricultural Education and Research Ecosystems for Innovation, Industrialisation, and Economic Development in Africa: A Call for Action.

For Universities in Africa, the main objective is to increase skills and qualifications across the African continent while collaborating with universities in Europe. This way, inclusive learning mobility opportunities will be promoted, the quality and relevance of Internationalisation of higher education, especially in Africa will be improved and unemployment among higher education students and trainees will be addressed.

The eligible consortium composition must have a minimum of four and maximum of six Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from Sub-Saharan Africa with one HEI from one for the EU member states (EU technical partner). Only one HEI in Africa can be lead applicant/coordinator. Other organisations from Africa can participate as Associate Partners. In order to benefit from this, Africa must be represented by at least three of the five regions on the continent. For instance, if a University in Southern Africa applies for the grant, it must do so with one from East Africa, West Africa or North Africa and together must have an EU university. If a university has the capacity to, it must host students from another partner university for academic mobility to be achieved.

Makerere University and the University of Namibia will under this MoU take full advantage of what the project will offer. Each project will receive up to the tune of €1.8 million.

Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University confirmed an already existing collaboration with UNAM on a number of projects with a lot of their staff coming to Makerere University for exchange programs. He stated that Makerere was been instrumental in helping to set up UNAM’s School of Pharmacy with many students from Namibia coming to Makerere for training.

Prof. Nawangwe added that the solutions of Africa will be found within Africa and the work that the universities are going to do together will help move Africa out of poverty.

He signed the MoU in the presence of the Principal of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), Prof. Gorettie N. Nabanoga.

Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony in Windhoek, Namibia, Prof. Kenneth Matengo, the Vice Chancellor of UNAM said that for a long time, universities in Africa have had more research collaborations with universities in Europe and America than with their African counterparts, a position that must now change. “We need to focus on South to South Cooperation within the Context of Africa.”

Partnerships between RUFORUM member universities are envisaged to help strengthen foresight capacity at African universities and other partners and support capacity building in this important area to support planning and future implementation of key programs. Furthermore, they are projected to increase ‘academic mobility schemes’ and strengthens Centres of Excellence to enhance mobility, regional level training, and economies of scope as well as scale.

Food and Local, Agricultural, and Nutritional Diversity (FoodLAND) project, Department of Food Technology and Nutrition, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), Makerere University, Kampala Uganda, East Africa, Funded to the tune of 7 million Euros by the European Commission within the Horizon 2020 programme, research dissemination, Nakaseke District, 16th July 2024.

******Food and Local, Agricultural, and Nutritional Diversity (FoodLAND) project aims to develop, implement and validate innovative, scalable, and sustainable technologies aimed at supporting the nutrition performance of local food systems in Africa, while strengthening agro-biodiversity and food diversity as well as diversity of healthy diets.

Experiences of Nakaseke District farmers

Farmers in Nakaseke District are indebted for the support and training received from the FoodLAND Project. Although many had been engaged in the activity, they lacked knowledge and skills of modern farming. Connected to FoodLAND through VEDCO, a non-governmental and not for profit agricultural organization, the farmers have acquired skills on value addition, precision irrigation/fertigation, smart storage systems, gardening and hydroponics systems, biodegradable mulching, precision crop protection systems, precision harvesting systems and agro-ecological intensification practices.

Dr. Richard Bukenya disseminated the project findings and achievements on behalf of the PI.

According to Ms. Nakawuba Sarah, a widow and tomato farmer in Kapeeka Sub County, Nakaseke District, the knowledge acquired has enabled her to expand, and gain more profits. “I extend my gratitude to FoodLAND and the funders of the project. The knowledge acquired over time has enabled me to expand my farm and earn more money. Due to ignorance, we used to be exploited – people would buy our products cheaply because we lacked knowledge of preservation. The training on value addition has helped us learn how to preserve our products and we are now benefiting more from them. At the time my husband died, we had just a small house built on his father’s land. I am happy that with the support received from VEDCO and FoodLAND, I have bought a plot of land, built a house, and I am able to pay school fees for my children. I once again thank VEDCO and the FoodLAND. Although the FoodLAND project is ending soon, I request that they do not leave us. They should continue training us so that we further improve our skills.”

Mr. Lubowa Samuel Sunday , also a farmer in Kapeeka Sub County, Nakaseke District is equally grateful. Through FoodLAND, several farmers in Nakaseke District have acquired knowledge of climate smart agriculture. “Farming in the dry season is no longer a challenge. Our harvest has increased and we are now earning more. However we still face a number of challenges including the high cost of fertilizers and pesticides. We appeal to the project team to conduct more research on natural remedies for the challenges we are experiencing.”

Participants during one of the training sessions.

Ms. Nankya Jane , a coffee and banana farmer Semuto Sub County, Nakaseke District, the irrigation skills acquired through the project have greatly improved her farm. “The place where I do my farming was so dry, and this, in many cases, affected my yields. Through VEDCO, we were taken to the Makerere University Agricultural Research Institute Kabanyolo (MUARIK) where we acquired skills on proper irrigation and value addition using technologies developed by the FoodLAND Project. If I had acquired these skills when I started 7 years ago, I would be very far. My appeal is that you continue offering training to us. There is a lot more that we need to learn.”

About the FoodLAND project

Launched in 2020, the main objective of the FoodLAND project was to develop, implement and validate innovative, scalable and sustainable technologies aimed at supporting the nutrition performance of local food systems in Africa, while strengthening agro-biodiversity and food diversity as well as diversity of healthy diets.

Butalangu Town Clerk, Ms. Rashida Mutebi on behalf of the Chief Administrative Officer appreciated the project for reaching out and working with the local communities to improve their livelihoods.

Funded to the tune of 7 million euro by the European Commission within the Horizon 2020 programme, and led by Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna (Italy), the project committed to developing a range of innovations for local agriculture and aquaculture development, as well as to nudging consumers towards healthier eating behaviour in six African countries: Morocco, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The project specifically aimed to empower smallholder farmers and food operators, foster nutrition responsive and sustainable agro-biodiversity, reinforce the productivity and resilience of food supply chains, and create new market opportunities at both the local and global scales, thereby encouraging the flourishing of rural communities. The project was envisaged to create a network of 14 local Food Hubs—paired with 14 separate cities in these countries—that would mobilise relevant actors in rural, urban and peri-urban communities and serve as injection points for testing and introducing the innovations. The 28 partners that comprise the FoodLAND consortium (18 of them African institutions while the other 10 are European) were expected to work together to develop, implement and validate 12 technological innovations; which include organizational and technological innovations for both vegetable and fish farming and food processing systems, together with 17 novel local food products, ranging from fresh, dried and processed vegetables and fish to composite flours and therapeutic foods.

During the workshop, Mr. Barak Price, a student on the project sensitized participants on the rodent control system. He also trained the farmers on precision irrigation/fertigation. The farmers were also taken through the processes of value addition. Ms. Josephine Kisakye, a researcher on the project discussed the nutrition recommendations developed by the project. In the course of the project activities, it was noted that diets in Uganda are mainly composed of starchy staples, especially cereals, roots, tubers and bananas, with legumes constituting the main protein source. Intake of micronutrient-rich foods is low, despite various interventions to promote consumption of fruits, and vegetables. Ugandan adult and elderly population in both rural and urban areas were found to be at risk of under-nutrition and micro-nutrient deficiencies. Nutritional recommendations included: i) Daily consumption of locally available fruits and vegetables, whole starchy staples, and protein-rich foods; including beans, peas, nuts, fish, eggs, and meat; ii) Limiting the consumption of fried foods, salt, alcohol, and sweetened beverages; iii) Hydrate with fluids, preferably water; Regular engagement in moderate-intensity physical activity like brisk walking, digging, swimming, aerobics, and cycling; vi) Undertaking medical examination at intervals of no longer than 6 months to facilitate timely detection and treatment of ailments like diabetes, hypertension, high plasma cholesterol and cancers.

AERC PhD Fellowships 2024/2025: Empowering African Economists for Sustainable Development

AR Managing Editor

The African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) is currently accepting applications for its 2024/2025 PhD Fellowships. This opportunity is designed for students from Francophone and Anglophone sub-Saharan African countries who are pursuing advanced studies in economics. Established in 1988, the AERC is a not-for-profit organization focused on enhancing economic policy research and training across Africa . The organization plays a vital role in supporting capacity building in economic policy through policy research and graduate education.

The fellowship program aims to strengthen the continent’s economic research capacity by providing scholarships to students admitted to AERC Collaborative PhD Programs (CPP) at various universities. These universities include:

  • University of Cape Town, South Africa
  • University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin
  • University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
  • University of Benin, Nigeria
  • Félix Houphouet-Boigny University, Côte d’Ivoire
  • University Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Senegal
  • University of Ibadan, Nigeria
  • University of Nairobi, Kenya
  • University of Yaoundé II, Cameroon
  • University of Pretoria, South Africa
  • University of Witwatersrand, South Africa

To be eligible, applicants must fulfill the following criteria:

  • University Admission : Applicants must be admitted to one of the listed CPP universities for a PhD program in economics.
  • Academic Background : A minimum of Second Class Honours (Upper Division) or equivalent in economics, agricultural economics, or related fields from an accredited institution is required. Additionally, a master’s degree with coursework and a thesis in economics, agricultural economics, or related fields is essential. The coursework must cover core economic subjects such as microeconomics, macroeconomics, quantitative methods, and econometrics.
  • Research and Professional Experience : While not mandatory, having at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal is an advantage. Prior involvement in economic management, research, or training within the public sector is also beneficial.
  • Diversity and Inclusion : The program encourages applications from women and candidates from post-conflict or fragile states.

Applicants who wish to apply should first seek admission to one of the listed universities through the respective university’s application process. Upon receiving an admission letter, they must upload the following documents to the AERC scholarship portal:

  • Application cover letter
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Evidence of admission to one of the eligible universities
  • Certified copies of academic transcripts and certificates

The application deadline for the fellowship is August 31, 2024.

By offering this fellowship, the AERC aims to nurture a new generation of economists who can contribute significantly to policy-making, economic development, and research in their home countries and across the African continent. This initiative is critical for ensuring the long-term sustainability and resilience of Africa’s economic systems and policy frameworks.

Internews’ Earth Journalism Network Virtual Reporting Fellowships to the UNCBD (COP16) and UNFCCC (COP29)

Application Deadline: 15 August 2024, 11:59 PM (Pacific/Niue)

nternews’  Earth Journalism Network  is pleased to announce two separate virtual fellowship programs that will support selected journalists to cover the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the  UN Framework Convention on Climate Change  (UNFCCC) and the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

The UNCBD COP16 conference takes place in Cali, Colombia from 21 October–1 November 2024 . It will see key players examine progress made toward the safeguarding and restoration of biological diversity. COP16 will focus on supporting countries so that their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) align with the Biodiversity Plan, mobilizing and bolstering the means of implementation – primarily funding – and finding a way to govern access and benefit-sharing (ABS), particularly to Digital Sequence Information and genetic material.

The UNFCCC COP29 will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan from 11–22 November 2024. It will be a key gathering to advance the goals of the Paris Agreement and make progress on Parties’ mitigation and adaptation targets. The priorities of this COP include both upscaling national efforts to reduce carbon emissions through Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and negotiating a new climate finance goal, replacing the existing commitment of $100 billion annually until 2025. Success at COP29 hinges on establishing a new goal that is based on the needs of and addresses the previous goal’s shortcomings.

Eligibility

Requirements for the two Fellowships are different so please read the below carefully:

Trained participants are better equipped to assist their organisations and communities in protecting and promoting their rights.

Fellows from all 5 language components of the programme are trained together with simultaneous interpretation over 4 weeks in Geneva. • Candidates should agree to train other indigenous persons after the return to their respective communities/organizations.
  • The candidate should be proposed, and his/her candidacy supported by his/her indigenous organization and/or community. It is desirable that the sponsoring organization has a firm constituency or membership and that it is representative.

Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa: Doctoral Dissertation Proposal Fellowship

The Social Science Research Council offers fellowships to support the completion of doctoral degrees and to promote next generation social science research in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. The fellowships support dissertation research on peace, security, and development topics.

Doctoral dissertation proposal fellowships  support PhD students working on developing a doctoral dissertation research proposal as well as students who recently completed a master’s degree and seek to enroll in a PhD program. The fellowships support short-term research costs of up to US$3,000 to develop a doctoral dissertation proposal.  This program also includes two workshops each year that have been designed to create fellows’ networks, help fellows refine, develop, and strengthen research questions, align research methods to questions, engage key literature in their fields, and finalize their doctoral research proposals.

Eligibility:

All applicants must:

  • be citizens of any sub-Saharan African country
  • be enrolled, or intend to enroll by the time of the award, and working towards a PhD in an accredited university, or affiliated to an institution in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda
  • hold a master’s degree at the time of application

The program prioritizes applicants holding a faculty position or demonstrating a durable commitment to higher education in Africa, but does not restrict eligibility to such individuals.

The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply.

Thematic Priorities:

The program features a thematic focus on  peace ,  security , and  development  in order to renew basic research agendas and strengthen interdisciplinary social science research capacity addressing these issues.

The program encourages innovative research on peace, security, and development topics, broadly conceived, moving the boundaries of scholarship and research by exploring concrete linkages between these themes. We envision supporting a diverse set of projects seeking to shed light on a range of economic, political, social, conflict and peacebuilding processes using evidence-based research. Some projects, we hope, will examine large-scale phenomena and others small-scale social processes. The strongest projects typically will explore connections across these scales. Some research projects will rigorously explore elements of governance, civil society, human rights, peacebuilding mechanisms/institutions and processes, and rule of law. Others will explore root causes of conflict, emerging trajectories and forms of conflict, insecurities, and human mobilities. Above all projects should advance important fields of study and social science knowledge. Please see the following list of prospective issues that are considered relevant to Next Gen fellowships:

  • Causes and drivers of conflict
  • Institutional and local approaches to conflict prevention, management, and resolution
  • National and Regional approaches to peace, security, and development
  • Identity and conflict
  • Gender, youth, conflict, peacebuilding
  • Conflict, peace and human mobilities
  • Histories, Arts and Cultures of conflict and peace
  • State-Society relations
  • Economic and Humanitarian perspectives to conflict and peace
  • Democracy, human rights, and development
  • Post-conflict development, governance and reconstruction
  • Peace agreements and transitional justice and reconciliation
  • International justice, war crimes, peace and development
  • Law and constitutionalism
  • Natural resource governance, conflict, peace and development
  • Climate Change, conflict, peace, and security
  • Climate change adaptation and mitigation practices and peace
  • Globalization and emerging insecurities
  • Peace education and African literatures
  • Media, digital technology, AI, peace, and security

Application Process:

All applications must be submitted using our online application portal .

Strong proposals will offer clear and concise descriptions of the project and its significance. Proposals should display thorough knowledge of the relevant social science literature that applicants will engage in and the methodologies relevant to the project. In addition, applicants must demonstrate that all proposed activities are feasible and can be completed in a timely manner. All proposals will be evaluated for these criteria by an independent, international committee of leading scholars from a range of social science and related disciplines.  Fellows must be willing to attend two workshops sponsored by the SSRC each year that are intended to help early-career faculty engage in scholarly reflections, research, and writing. We anticipate awarding up to 36 fellowships in total across all three categories each year.

Information on eligibility, the application process, and award details can be found in our Answers to  Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) . For inquiries or technical questions pertaining to the online application portal, please contact SSRC staff from the Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa Program:  [email protected] .

WHO/AFRO Fellowship Programme on Public Health Emergencies in Africa

Date published: 21 October 2022

image

The World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa (WHO AFRO) invites interested and eligible candidates to submit applications for a fellowship programme on improving the management of public health emergencies in Africa under the COVID-19 Incident Management Support Team (IMST).

Description of the Fellowship

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose a challenge to health care systems, particularly in Africa. Every new surge in cases and deaths stresses an already overworked and overstretched workforce, strains resources, and negatively affects health care operations on the continent. The pandemic's uncertain duration means that health care communities must provide opportunities for stability and growth to the health workforce as it adapts to the ongoing situation. Health care leadership is essential in ensuring the continuity of operations based on effective decision-making and enhanced response operations.

However, the gap between emergencies and public health management skills, leadership, policy, and research has become increasingly evident during the pandemic.

Having well-prepared public health managers with the requisite skills to manage any pandemic is therefore critical for implementing a new public health order that will prepare Member States to promptly detect and effectively respond to public health threats.

Through a three-month fellowship programme, WHO AFRO seeks to support 15 aspirational Master’s degree students, PhD fellows, and emergency public health managers and leaders (Fellows) in Africa in acquiring advanced skills and competencies for strategizing, managing and leading health programmes that will positively transform future public health emergency response on the continent.

The fellowship programme seeks to bridge the emergency public health management and research-to-policy gaps and produce well-equipped, versatile managers and leaders as required by the WHO Emergency Response Framework and the International Health Regulations (2005) for emergency response. Additionally, it seeks to navigate the complex environment of public health practice to achieve and maintain a positive impact on health, politics, negotiation, partnerships and health diplomacy.

The fellowship will adopt a hybrid approach, combining face-to-face engagements with technology-based activities in line with WHO’s Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) flagship programme, which aims to reinforce and scale up the quality and scope of public health emergency management in Africa over the next five years.

Number of Fellowship to be awarded

A total of 15 fellowships will be awarded to:

  • Five Master’s degree students;
  • Five PhD students;
  • Five mid- and senior-level public health experts.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Be registered in a Master’s degree programme (Master’s Fellows).
  • Be registered in a PhD programme (PhD/DPhil Fellows).
  • Be a full-time employee (in the public/private sector or academia) with a Master’s degree or public health qualification or PhD (mid- or senior-level career Fellows).
  • Have professional experience in public health (One Health, medicine, health financing, health economics, health policy, animal health, social sciences, and environmental health).
  • Possess relevant experience that has contributed to the advancement of public health emergency management in Africa.
  • Demonstrate potential for effective public health management that can positively impact the health outcomes of populations.

· Develop an achievable proposal that addresses strategic challenges for improving the management of public health emergencies on the continent.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: [Resident and Non-Resident Fellowship] Do I need to hold a Ph.D. to apply for the CEGA fellowship program?

A: No. Applicants to the CEGA Visiting Fellowship must have completed at minimum a Master’s degree in economics, statistics, epidemiology/public health, or another social science discipline.

Q: [Resident and Non-Resident Fellowship] I’m from a Francophone country in West Africa, am I eligible to apply ?

A: Yes, we have recently expanded our eligibility to include countries in Francophone West Africa. Please note that our selection criteria include fluency in English (written and spoken) and strong communication skills.

Q: [Resident and Non-Resident Fellowship] I’m from an eligible East or West African country, but am currently based in Europe/East Asia/ U.S. etc. Am I eligible to apply?

A: Yes, as long as you hold a staff or student position in an eligible East or West African country and have plans to return to the country to do research.

Q: [Resident Fellowship] My university/organization won’t allow me to leave for 4 months and continue being paid, will CEGA provide me with a salary?

A: No. The CEGA Resident Fellowship program will cover the costs of room and board in Berkeley, health insurance, visa fees, and roundtrip economy airfare for selected fellows. In addition, fellows will be provided a monthly stipend to cover any other expenses that may occur during their stay at UC Berkeley (local transportation, personal hygiene items, etc.). If taking a leave without pay from work will be challenging, the Non-Resident Fellowship may be a better option for you.

Q. [Resident Fellowship] What is CEGA’s policy on travel to present at conferences during the resident fellowship?

We are very supportive of fellows attending conferences where they’ve been selected to present their research, as it aligns with their professional development and the goals of the fellowship! It is essential to let CEGA program staff know as soon as possible about this opportunity. If you are selected to present during the fellowship, we ask that you follow the following guidelines:

  • Inform CEGA/Northwestern staff as soon as this is a potential possibility, to ensure the dates do not conflict with program activities and will not affect your J-1 visa (international conferences may not be possible to present on your visa).
  • Confirm expenses are covered by the conference organization or yourself (CEGA  and Northwestern do not have additional resources to support this during the fellowship).

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships provide funding to students to encourage the study of critical and less commonly taught foreign languages in combination with area studies, international studies or international aspects of professional studies. These fellowships are funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Education under Title VI of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, and the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008. The purpose of the FLAS program is to promote the training of students who intend to make their careers in college or university teaching, government service, or other employment where knowledge of foreign languages and cultures is essential.

Setting up a collaborative PhD Programme in Sustainable Development Studies

Photo of an African map with a magnifying glass over it

The ARUA collaborative PhD programmes are an aspiring project that intends to significantly change how doctoral training is done in the region. Importantly, the pilot phase of the programmes will target young African students and comes with an admission target of 70% women in each cohort. The overall goal is to graduate 1,000 PhD students annually at ARUA member universities.

Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, who was the Secretary-General of ARUA until he retired at the end of last month, says this ARUA project “is designed to develop a template that could be used by all African universities for the future growth of PhD programmes”.

The Mastercard Foundation will support the first 10 years of the programmes.

The Sustainable Development Studies PhD Programme has two distinct prongs: Sustainable Development Economics; and Climate and Development Studies.

The programme is curated by a team from ACEIR and the ARUA Centre of Excellence in Climate and Development (ARUA-CD) with key partners from two of the Clusters of Research Excellence (CoREs) set up by ARUA and The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities (The Guild).

These Africa-Europe Clusters – in Inequalities, Poverty, and Deprivation ( CoRE IPD ); and on Nature-based Solutions for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation ( CoRE-NBS ), comprise researchers from ACEIR, ARUA-CD, and The Guild universities.

ACEIR’s director, Prof. Murray Leibbrandt from the University of Cape Town, says the two ARUA centres in collaboration with their respective CoRE partners are not only embarking on an interdisciplinary research and teaching journey with this programme.

“We aim to gradually transform the institutional framework towards transdisciplinary work within our universities.”

The programme is to be built off strong foundations, Prof. Leibbrandt points out, as the institutions leading the collaboration are fully committed to supporting a programme of this scale and complexity.

“The institutional excellence that comes with the programme partners promises the delivery of a unique and valuable collaborative programme of research, graduate training, and broader capacity building at a scale that currently does not exist.”

A challenge-based learning approach for real-world problem-solving

“To generate solutions to Africa's development challenges, this PhD programme must significantly differ from traditional ones”, says Prof. Robert D. Osei, convenor of ACEIR’s Ghana node at the University of Ghana. He is the PhD programme co-lead for ARUA together with Prof. Leibbrandt.

“While the programme will leverage disciplinary strengths and methods, it will be interdisciplinary as much as possible and challenge-based to engage students in real-world problem-solving.”

A joint research and capacity building project on the interactions between climate action and inequality by ACEIR and ARUA-CD researchers have already demonstrated the potential for interdisciplinary research across climate and economics.

The PhD programme's intention to tackle real-world issues will emphasise understanding and addressing the factors that influence growth, poverty dynamics, and sustainable development in Africa. Specific attention will be given to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Prof. Osei says PhD candidates will at the onset be guided on course selection that is relevant to their individual career and development plans. Once coursework is successfully completed, they will be embedded at collaborating institutions in research projects that overlap with their own interests and project work.

This includes the opportunity to work with the programme’s CoRE partner universities in Europe, giving them access to world-class research capacities and mentorship.

In this way the PhD students will be exposed to working in diverse research teams and get networking and career progression opportunities. Other components of the programme will help students to hone their communication skills; and to establish close ties with businesses, civil society, and policy communities to prepare those interested in employment outside academia.

Fully paid for, and flexible

Inadequate funding to support students has been recognised by ARUA universities as one of the contributors to the continent’s low output of PhD graduates, according to Prof. Aryeetey .  Providing adequate financial support to students is therefore important to ensure the ARUA PhD programmes are accessible to students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, especially female PhD candidates who often have competing caregiving and income-earning responsibilities.

Prof. Leibbrandt says the Sustainable Development Studies programme will provide competitive scholarships for full-time studies without the need for taking on additional paid work.

“The programme also considers the reality of unpaid care work and family responsibilities by allowing students to customise their study-abroad times according to their needs.”

Sustainable development through the lens of two disciplines

The first stream of the programme – in Sustainable Development Economics – aims to provide comprehensive training to PhD candidates across the University of Cape Town, the University of Ghana, and the University of Nairobi. International collaborations on this prong of the programme are The Guild’s CoRE IPD partners, the University of Groningen and Aarhus University; and the African Economic Research Consortium, which has the largest network of an existing collaborative PhD training in economics on the continent.

The second stream, in Climate and Development Studies, aims to provide interdisciplinary training at four ARUA universities: the University of Cape Town, University of Ghana, University of Nairobi, and Stellenbosch University. The Guild’s CoRE-NBS partner is the University of Bologna.

Students in the programme will have to complete several interdisciplinary courses to equip them with the resourcefulness needed to address the complexity of sustainable development challenges.

Existing data hubs an excellent resource for doctoral studies

High-quality data are a vital resource for PhD projects. The programme, therefore, will provide access to ACEIR’s cross-sectional and – uniquely – longitudinal datasets on inequality, poverty, and development in Africa. Together with datasets used by ARUA-CD for analysis of climate change risk, its impacts, adaptation, climate governance and implications on human development, the programme will be able to offer collaborative PhD students access to an excellent data hub, or linked data hubs.

Such a data hub/s would be a most impactful research infrastructure contribution by this collaborative programme.

In addition, the University of Groningen’s Growth and Development Centre brings a set of comprehensive databases on indicators of growth and development that are important for tracking and understanding long-run economic development patterns in Africa, and internationally. And, the ARUA partner universities’ extensive network, especially with national statistical offices, will also help make relevant data accessible to the students.

Policy assessments and evaluation skills are important components

Given the programme’s aim to be relevant to contemporary regional and global development challenges, policy impact evaluation and training in rigorous evaluation techniques will be prioritised. A course is planned to equip students with the necessary skills to conduct comprehensive policy assessment.

Prof. Leibbrandt says that, overall, students enrolled in this PhD programme will to be equipped to apply methodological and analytical tools to address any of the SDGs from a multidisciplinary perspective.

“The programme will be designed to be highly attractive to individuals – especially Africans – who aspire to become impactful scholars, researchers, policymakers, or international development practitioners”.

The programme commences in 2026 and aims to award up to 100 new PhD scholarships to students each year during the ARUA project’s pilot phase.

15 Fully Funded PhD Programs for Black Students

Home » College Grants

In the United States, there are fully funded PhD programs for black students. A “full funding” financial assistance provides complete tuition relief in addition to a yearly provident fund or salary for the duration of the program, which in itself is typically 3-6 years.

Funding is normally contingent on students teaching or conducting studies in their discipline of study. Since not all academic institutions fund their doctoral students, it is critical to explore the monetary assistance options of various programs.

With so many universities in the United States delivering Ph.D. programs, it’s no mystery that American Ph.D. expenses differ wildly.

A number of doctorate programs are offered online, from Walden University to Capella to Phoenix , and many more fully funded doctorate programs online.

Even though the United States is known for being a ridiculously priced destination for students, there are several excellent alternatives for Ph.D. funding (including many fully-funded Ph.D. programs for international students).

In an attempt to bridge the disproportionality, doctoral scholarships for black females males are becoming increasingly common. Even though blacks make up a small percentage of Ph.D. candidates, their existence in graduate programs has been increasing.

The count of doctorates granted to blacks has attained an all-time high, rising at approximately 5.3 percent per year. If you are interested in starting your PhD. program and have the requirements for the program that you seek, the first step is ensuring that you meet the requirements for the college that you are interested in.

Once you have determined the first plan, which would be academic in nature, and as soon as you meet the criteria, then finding fully funded programs should come next. As previously stated, there are fully funded Ph.D. programs for black students in the United States. They include:
