How to Make a Personal Development Plan With Timeline Slides?

A monitor with arrows at the end shows a person is standing with a blue background

Are you seeking to take control of your future and set yourself up for success? Whether you are a high school student, a graduate, or even a seasoned entrepreneur, a personal development plan is a must. It’s your roadmap to achieving your goals, and a timeline PPT template should be your guiding compass. How then do you come up with one that works for you?

In the following post, we will explain how to create a personal development plan by using timeline slides . We will take you through the process and show you how to turn your ideas into actionable steps. So let’s get started.

Personal Development Plan Introduction

A personal development plan is by far the closest resemblance to being the blueprint for one’s future, which helps a person set clear goals, identify steps that need to be taken to accomplish these goals, and control one’s progress. Whether you are seeking further career development, wishing to enhance your skill set, or just making positive changes in your personal life, a personal development plan will keep you on track. But where do you start?

It is always a task that could be quite daunting the first time one undertakes the responsibility of making a PDP when maybe they are not sure where to start. A timeline PPT makes things easier. The template helps chunk your aims, making it much easier to stay focused and motivated.

Why Use a Timeline Template?

How do you use timeline PPT in your personal development plan? Imagine building a house without a construction schedule. You might start strong, but without planning, things will eventually cave in on you. The same thing applies to your personal development.

A timeline PowerPoint template is something like an action plan for constructing your growth. It helps arrange your goals by time. Therefore, you are certainly assured of working regularly toward them. Plus, it is quite motivational to plot your progress graphically.

Step 1: Self-Analysis

You cannot start working on a plan unless you know where you are. You must create a personal development plan after self-analysis. Take some time off and think about your strengths, weaknesses, values, and passions. Do the following reflectively:

What are my strengths and abilities at the moment?

Where would I like to go in the next year, five years, or ten years?

What are the areas I want to improve in life?

Knowing where you’re at helps you make more meaningful, yet realistic, goals.

Step 2: Set SMART Goals

Now that you’ve done a rough evaluation of yourself, you can write down your goals. But not just any goals—SMART goals. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Specific : What exactly are you trying to achieve?

Measurable : How do you know you have reached it? Define criteria for measuring progress.

Achievable : Goals must be realizable in the framework of a given situation at that particular time.

There: See that your goals are congruent with the overall general objectives of your life.

Time-Bounded : Attach a time frame to the achievement of the goal.

For example, one can say, I need to improve my public speaking, but a smart goal shall sound like this I need to have an accomplished public speaking course, and three presentations have to be given before the year-end.

Step 3: Prioritizing Your Goals

After your goals are fixed in their places, the next thing you can do is to prioritize them. Some of these goals will not stand equal; some will have a more incite effect on one’s life or career than others. Find out exactly which of the goals has more importance for you and give your priority first.

Think of it like this: you wouldn’t put your toothbrush at the very bottom of a suitcase while you’re getting ready for a trip. The same idea goes into ranking the goals; focus on those that are going to get you there faster.

Step 4: Create Your Timeline

Now that you have your priorities set, you have to plot them onto a timeline. That is where that timeline template comes in handy. First, assign deadlines to each of your SMART goals.

Break down these larger goals into smaller, more manageable actions. For example, if you have set a goal to write a book, then your timeline is likely to include dates by which you would have completed chapters, secured an editor, and submitted your manuscript for publication.

Keep in mind that the timeline should be flexible but capable of structuring your adjustments at the same time.

Step 5: Monitor Your Progress

A personal development plan is not a ‘set and forget’ document. One keeps up his or her progress by staying motivated, which involves tasks and achievements. Once in a while, review your timeline and tick off completed tasks.

This not only will help you keep track of your way up but also realize what may be becoming stiff hurdles for you. If you lag, do not get discouraged; use that as a chance to reassess and rework your plan.

Step 6: Refine and Adjust the Plan

Life is not certain, and even the most well-planned plans at times go haywire. Tweaks and adjustments are part of the process. If you find out that the goal does not apply anymore, then re-evaluate it.

If you achieve a goal earlier than expected, now would be an apt time to set a new, more challenging goal. Your personal development plan will evolve along with you as you change over time.

Benefits of a Timeline PPT Template

Adopting the use of a timeline PowerPoint template in one’s personal development plan has the following benefits:

Clarity : It becomes possible to see what needs to be done and when.

Increased motivation: You’re able to see progress, and that will increase your motivation to keep going.

Organization : Helps you put your goals and tasks in an order that reduces them to digestible sizes and prevents overwhelming.

Definition : You are accountable with a timeline; therefore it becomes easy to determine whether you are on course or falling behind.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

A personal development plan can be a life-altering endeavor. Some common pitfalls that you should avoid include:

Setting unrealistic goals: Please be ambitious, but ensure that your goals are achievable.

Skipping self-assessment: Doing that will lead you to write down goals that may not be in sync with your real needs.

Timeline overload : Doing too much in a short period is sure to burn you out. Be realistic about what you can do within a specific period.

Not tracking your progress : You need regular check-ins to ensure you are heading in the right direction.

Conclusion : Your Journey Towards Self-Improvement

A personal development plan, much like a template timeline, is used along with a timeline template; it looks slightly like you are sketching a template guide for your life journey. It is used to give you direction, be a source of focus, and guide you into making forward strides in the direction of your ultimate goals. Always remember, this is a plan for you, so make it personal, make it flexible, and most importantly, make it work for you.

 1. What’s a personal development plan?

Personal Development Plan: A personal development plan is a written schematic outline of goals, measurements, and time-frames for some observable changes, in the strength of knowledge, self-growth in person/skills improvement.

2. What are ways in which a timeline slide can support personal development?

A timeline slide can support personal development by serving as a planning tool. It is an accessible tool that effectively helps to put in order the goals in a graphic form, from the mind to the paper, in a beautiful and visible timeline that could be used for progress tracking and continued motive.

3. What are SMART goals?

SMART goals represent objectives that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound; they set clear direction and give criteria for success.

4. How often should I update my personal development plan?

It is wise to review and update your plan regularly, say quarterly, to ensure it stays aligned with your goals and life changes.

5. What if I don’t hit my targets in the set time frame?

If you missed any deadline, it must be a time to reevaluate the plan. Chances are, you’ll have to undertake a little bit of revision of your goal and place some new timeline. The main thing, however, is to stay flexible and committed to your growth.

About Me Slides: How to Introduce Yourself in a Presentation

self presentation in english ppt

From conference talks to client demos, it’s always essential to include an About Me slide in any presentation you are giving. Introducing yourself early into the presentation helps build a better rapport with the audience.

You can start with several fun facts about me slide to break the ice or go for a more formal professional bio to explain your background and what makes you qualified to talk about the topic at hand. At any rate, your goal is to get the audience on your side by revealing some of your personality.

How to Introduce Yourself in a Presentation: 4 Approaches

It’s a good practice to include self-introduction slides at the beginning of your presentation. If you are looking to answer how to introduce yourself professionally, typically somewhere after the title, opening slide , and the main agenda. However, the presentation structure will be somewhat different depending on whether you are presenting to a new audience or a group of people familiar with (e.g., your team, clients, or business partners).

Here are four about me slide ideas you can try out, plus an About me template you can use to present yourself in a presentation.

self presentation in english ppt

1. Mention Your Name and Affiliations

Start with the introduction basics. State your name, company, title/position, and several quick facts about who you are and what you do. Even if you present to a familiar audience, a brief recap is always welcome.

To keep things a bit more engaging, consider adding some lesser-known facts about yourself. For example:

  • Your interests
  • Recent accomplishments
  • Testimonial/quote from a team member
  • Fun nicknames you got

The above can be nice ice breakers for less formal team presentations, project updates, or catch-ups with clients.

Here are several unique About Me examples you can try out:

For a client case study presentation :

“Hi, I’m Lynda, Chief Customer Success Specialist with Acme Corp. (Also, someone you thought was a chatbot for the first few encounters)

47 NPS | 15% Churn Rate | 40% repeat purchase rate”

For a team after-action review presentation :

Mike, Project Manager at Cool Project

(aka Maximizer)

Personal Project stats:

387 Slack messages answered

56 cups of coffee consumed

Project profit gross margin: $1.2 million

2. Work On Your Elevator Pitch

One of the best ways to introduce yourself in a presentation is to share a punchy elevator pitch. This works extra well if you are presenting to a new audience.

An elevator pitch is a concise statement (1-2 sentences) that summarizes your unique strengths, skills, and abilities and explains how these can benefit your listener.

It’s nice to have one ready for your presentations and networking in general since it helps you immediately connect with new people and communicate your value.

Writing a solid elevator pitch may require several attempts and iterations. But the sooner you start — the faster you’ll arrive at the best formula!

To get your creative juices flowing, here are several elevator pitch ideas you can incorporate in an introduction slide about yourself.

For professionals:

“Certified Salesforce Administrator, data visualization specialist, and analytics for top SaaS brands. I help businesses make more sense of their data to drive better outcomes”.

For a mentor :

“Adjunct professor of creative writing at Columbia University, published author, former lifestyle editor at Esquire, the New York Times. I can teach you how to find, shape, pitch, and publish stories for web & print.”

For a student:

“Third-year Marine Biology student at Denver State Uni. Volunteer at Lake Life Protection NGO, climate change activist, looking to expand my research about water conservation”.

3. Answer Popular Questions or Assumptions

If you are a frequent presenter , chances are you get asked a lot of the same “About Me questions” after your speeches and during the networking bits. So why not address a roaster of these in your About Me slide? Select 4-5 most common questions and list them as quick FAQs on your slide deck.

4. Focus on Telling a Story

Strong introductions are personable. They are meant to offer a sneak-peak into your personality and the passion behind your work. That’s why for less formal presentations, you can (and should!) start with a short personal story.

Remember: reliability is important to “click” with your audience.

For instance, neuroscience research of political ads recently found that ads featuring real people performed better than those with genetic stock footage. Among viewers, emotional engagement and memory encoding (recall) increased dramatically when political ads showed relatable people.

The same holds true for commerce. In 2015, GE launched a viral “What’s the Matter With Owen?” video ad series to attract more young talent to the company. The clips featured a relatable protagonist, struggling to explain what his work at GE entails e.g. that the company isn’t building railroads, but actually does some very innovative pilots. Many engineers related to the promo and work applications to GE shoot up by 800% !

As the above examples show, a good relatable story can go a long way. So think about how you can make a PowerPoint presentation about yourself more representative of who you really are as a person.

How to Give a Presentation About Yourself: 4 Fool-Proof Tips

On other occasions, you may be asked to give a full-length “about me” presentation. Typically, this is the case during a second interview, onboarding , or if you are in attending a training program or workshop where everyone needs to present themselves and their work.

Obviously, you’ll need more than one good about me slide in this case. So here’s how to prepare a superb presentation about me.

What to Put in a Presentation About Yourself?

The audience will expect to learn a mix of personal and professional facts about you. Thus, it’s a good idea to include the following information:

  • Your name, contact info, website , social media handles, digital portfolio .
  • Short bio or some interesting snippets.
  • Career timeline (if applicable).
  • Main achievements (preferably quantifiable).
  • Education, special training.
  • Digital badging awards , accolades, and other types of recognition.
  • Something more personal — an interest, hobby, aspiration.

The above mix of items will change a bit, depending on whether you are giving an interview presentation about yourself or introduce yourself post-hiring. For example, in some cases a dedicated bio slide may be useful, but other times focusing on main achievements and goals can be better.

That being said, let’s take a closer look at how to organize the above information in a memorable presentation.

P.S. Grab an about me slide template to make the design process easier!

self presentation in english ppt

1. Create a List of “Facts About Me”

The easiest way to answer the “tell me about yourself” question is by having an array of facts you can easily fetch from your brain.

When it comes to a full-length about me presentation , it’s best to have a longer list ready. To keep your brainstorming process productive, organize all your ideas in the following buckets:

  • Key skills (soft and hard)
  • Educational accolades, training
  • Accomplishments and other “bragging rights”
  • Personal tidbits (a.k.a. fun facts )

Once you have a list, it gets easier to build a series of slides around it.

2. Think Like Your Audience

Most likely you’d be asked to make a presentation about yourself by a recruiter. There’s a good reason why many ask this — they want to determine if you are a good “cultural fit” for their organization.

After all, 33% of people quit within the first 3 months of accepting a new job. Among these:

  • 43% of employees quit because their day-to-day role was different than what they were told it would be during the hiring process.
  • 32% cite company culture as a factor for leaving within the first three months.

About me presentations often serve as an extra “filter” helping both parties ensure that they are on the same page expectations- and work style-wise. Thus, when you prepare your slide deck, do some background company research. Then try to align the presentation with it by matching the company tone, communication style, and cultural values.

3. Include Testimonials and Recommendations

Use the voice of others to back up the claims you are making in your presentation. After all, trumping your own horn is what you are expected to do in such a presentation. But the voices of others can strengthen the claims you are personally making.

Depending on your role and industry, try to sprinkle some of the following testimonials:

  • LinkedIn recommendations
  • Quotes from personal or professional references
  • Social media comments
  • Data metrics of your performance
  • Funny assessments from your colleagues/friends

The above not just strengthen your narrative, but also help the audience learn some extras about you and your background. Testimonial slides can be of help for this purpose.

4. Include a Case Study

One of the best ways to illustrate who you are is to show what you are best in. Remember, an about me presentation often needs to “soft sell” your qualifications, experience, and personality.

One of the best ways to do that is to showcase how you can feel in a specific need and solve issues the business is facing.

So if you have the timeframe, use some of the ending slides to deliver a quick case study. You can present:

  • Short retrospective of a past successful project
  • Before-after transformations you’ve achieved
  • Spotlight of the main accomplishments within the previous role
  • Main customer results obtained
  • Specific solution delivered by you (or the team you’ve worked with)

Ending your presentation on such a high note will leave the audience positively impressed and wondering what results you could achieve for them.

To Conclude

It’s easy to feel stumped when you are asked to talk about yourself. Because there are so many things you could mention (but not necessarily should). At the same time, you don’t want to make your introduction sound like a bragging context. So always think from the position of your audience. Do the facts you choose to share benefit them in any way? If yes, place them confidently on your About Me slides!

First, Identify What Your Audience Wants from Your Presentation

Create an Introduction for Yourself that Makes the Audience Care About the Topic

So, before you design your introduction, think about what your audience wants from your presentation. Why do they want to spend their valuable time listening to you? Are going to waste their time? Or, are you going to provide them with something valuable?

For instance, I have expertise in a number of different areas. I’m a public speaking coach, a keynote speaker, a best-selling author, a search engine optimization specialist, and a popular podcaster. However, if I delivered that sentence to any audience, the most likely reaction would be, “So what?” That sentence doesn’t answer any of the above questions. The statement is also really “me-focused” not “audience-focused.”

So, when I start to design my self-introduction, I want to focus just on the area of expertise related to my topic. I’m then going to answer the questions above about that particular topic. Once you have these answers, set them aside for a second. They will be important later.

How to Introduce Yourself in a Presentation in Class.

If Everyone Already Knows You DON'T Introduce Yourself

Instead, you probably want to add in a fun way to start a speech . For example, instead of introducing yourself in your class speech and starting in an awkward way, start with a startling statistic. Or start with a summary of your conclusion. Or, you could start the presentation with an inspirational quote.

Each of these presentation starters will help you lower your nervousness and decrease your awkwardness.

If you are delivering a speech in a speech competition or to an audience who doesn’t know you try this technique. Just introduce yourself by saying your name , the school you represent , and your topic . Make it easy. This way you get to your content more quickly and lower your nervousness.

Typically, after you get the first few sentences out of the way, your nervousness will drop dramatically. Since your name, school, and topic should be very easy to remember, this takes the pressure off you during the most nervous moments.

Obviously, follow the guidelines that your teacher or coach gives you. (The competition may have specific ways they want you to introduce yourself.)

How to Introduce Yourself in a Business Presentation — A Step-by-Step Guide.

How to Introduce Yourself in a Business Presentation-A Step-by-Step Guide

In a professional setting, when new people walk into a meeting and don’t know what to expect, they will feel uncomfortable. The easiest way to ease some of that tension is to chat with your audience as they come into the room.

By the way, if you are looking for a template for an Elevator Speech , make sure to click this link.

Step #1: Start with your name and company name (or organization).

This one is easy. Just tell your audience your name and the organization that you are representing. If your organization is not a well-known brand name, you might add a short clarifying description. For instance, most people outside of the training industry have never heard of The Leader’s Institute ®. So, my step #1 might sound something like…

Hi, I’m Doug Staneart with The Leader’s Institute ®, an international leadership development company…

Still short and sweet, but a little more clear to someone who has never heard of my company.

Should you give your job title? Well… Maybe and sometimes. Add your title into the introduction only if your title adds to your credibility.

For example, if you are delivering a financial presentation and you are the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of your company, you might mention that. Your title adds to your credibility. However, if the CFO is delivering a presentation about the value of joining a trade association, the CFO title adds little credibility. So, there is very little value in adding the title.

Step #2: Tell your audience what problem you can solve for them.

Identify the Problem You Solve for Your Audience

For instance, if my topic is how to deliver presentations, I have to determine why the audience would care. What problem will they have that I can help them with? For my audiences, the problem that I most often help people with is how to eliminate public speaking fear. Once I have the problem, I add that to my introduction by using the words, “I help people…”

Hi, I’m Doug Staneart with The Leader’s Institute ®, an international leadership development company, and I help people eliminate public speaking fear.

However, if my topic is How to Close a Higher Percentage of Sales Presentations , I’d likely want to alter my introduction a little. I might say something like…

Hi, I’m Doug Staneart with The Leader’s Institute ®, an international leadership development company, and I help people design more persuasive sales presentations.

I have expertise in both areas. However, I focus my introduction on just the expertise that is applicable to this audience. If I gave the first introduction to the second audience, they will likely respond by thinking, well, I don’t really get nervous speaking, so I guess I can tune out of this speech .

So, create a problem statement starting with, “I help people…” Make the statement apply to what your audience really wants.

Step #3: Share some type of proof (social proof works best) that you can solve this problem.

By the way, if you just do steps #1 and #2, your introduction will be better than most that you will hear. However, if you add Step #3, you will gain more respect (and attention) from your audience. Without adding some type of proof that you can solve this problem, you are just giving your opinion that you are an expert. However, if you can prove it, you are also proving that you are an expert.

This is the tricky part. For some reason, most people who get to this part feel like they haven’t accomplished great things, so they diminish the great accomplishments that they do have.

For instance, an easy way to offer proof is with a personal story of how you have solved that problem in the past.

A Few Examples of How to Introduce Yourself Before a Presentation.

For instance, one of my early clients was a young accountant. When I was working with him, he came up with the following introduction, “I’m Gary Gorman with Gorman and Associates CPA’s, and I help small businesses avoid IRS audits.” It was a great, audience-focused attention-getter. (No one wants to get audited.) However, as an accountant, it wasn’t like his company was getting a lot of five-star reviews on Yelp! So, he was kind of struggling with his social proof. So, I asked him a series of questions.

Me, “How many clients do you have?”

Gary, “Over 300.”

Me, “How many small business tax returns have you processed?”

Gary, “Well, at least a couple hundred a year for 15 years.”

Me, “So, at least 3000?” He nodded. “How many of your 300 clients have been audited since you have been representing them?”

He looked at me and said, “Well, none.”

So, we just added that piece of proof to his talk of introduction.

I’m Gary Gorman with Gorman and Associates CPA’s, and I help small businesses avoid IRS audits. In fact, in my career, I’ve helped clients complete over 3000 tax returns, and not a single one has ever been audited.

Here Is How I Adjust My Introduction Based on What I Want the Audience to Do.

For my proof, I have a number of options. Just like Gary, I have had a lot of clients who have had great successes. In addition, I have published two best-selling books about public speaking. I also have hundreds of thousands of people who listen to my podcast each week. So, I can pick my evidence based on what I want my audience to do.

For instance, if I’m speaking at a convention, and I want the audience to come by my booth to purchase my books, my introduction might sound like this.

Hi, I’m Doug Staneart with The Leader’s Institute ®, an international leadership development company, and I help people eliminate public speaking fear. One of the things that I’m most know for is being the author of two best-selling books, Fearless Presentations and Mastering Presentations.

However, if I’m leading a webinar, I may want the audience to purchase a seat in one of my classes. In that case, my introduction might sound like this.

Hi, I’m Doug Staneart with The Leader’s Institute ®, an international leadership development company, and I help people eliminate public speaking fear. For instance, for the last 20 years, I’ve taught public speaking classes to over 20,000 people, and I haven’t had a single person fail to reduce their nervousness significantly in just two days.

If my goal is to get the audience to subscribe to my podcast, my intro might sound like…

Hi, I’m Doug Staneart with The Leader’s Institute ®, an international leadership development company, and I help people eliminate public speaking fear. One of the ways that I do this is with my weekly podcast called, Fearless Presentations, which has over one million downloads, so far.

Use the Form Below to Organize How to Introduce Yourself in a Presentation.

The point is that you want to design your introduction in a way that makes people pause and think, “Really? That sounds pretty good.” You want to avoid introductions that make your audience think, “So what?”

If you have a speech coming up and need a good introduction, complete the form below. We will send you your answers via email!

Can You Replace Your Introduction with a PowerPoint Slide?

Is it okay to make your first slide (or second slide) in your presentation slides an introduction? Sure. A good public speaker will often add an introduction slide with a biography, portrait, and maybe even contact information. I sometimes do this myself.

However, I NEVER read the slide to my audience. I often just have it showing while I deliver the short introduction using the guide above. This is a great way to share more of your work experience without sounding like you are bragging.

For tips about how many powerpoint slides to use in a presentation , click here.

Remember that There Is a Big Difference Between Your Introduction in a Presentation and Your Presentation Starter.

When you introduce yourself in a presentation, you will often just use a single sentence to tell the audience who you are. You only use this intro if the audience doesn’t know who you are. Your presentation starter, though, is quite different. Your presentation starter should be a brief introduction with relevant details about what you will cover in your presentation.

For details, see Great Ways to Start a Presentation . In that post, we show ways to get the attention of the audience. We also give examples of how to use an interesting hook, personal stories, and how to use humor to start a presentation.

The PowerPoint presentations in this category provide the ideal charts for every section of a curriculum vitae. You can use a table to present your strengths and weaknesses. Use a timeline or roadmap to track your career, milestone by milestone. Charts and diagrams can be used to illustrate your goals and qualifications. Our introductory tutorial summarizes the main features of a successful self-presentation and gives you tips to make your personal presentation a success.

In the following sections, you'll learn everything you need to know about presenting yourself and how to do it in PowerPoint. Keep reading to find out:

  • • ...The benefits of a successful self-presentation and what goes into one.
  • • ...what content and design features your personal PowerPoint presentation should include.
  • • ...what is essential for your presentation and what to focus on.

PowerPoint self-presentation: What is it and who needs one?

A PowerPoint self-presentation is actually nothing more than the name implies: using PowerPoint to present yourself. You can present who you are, what qualifies you for a position and what motivates you in a short presentation. This kind of PowerPoint presentation has become a popular tool for job applications and assessment centers. It’s not just a tool just for newcomers to a professional career, but also great for internal application processes. As an entrepreneur, you can also use a self-presentation to introduce yourself and your company to potential business partners and interested parties.

The benefits of presenting yourself with PowerPoint – why self-presentations work so well.

The trend towards PowerPoint self-presentations may not excite everyone. The good old application portfolio and traditional interview have worked so far. So, why fix something that isn't broken? The answer is: a self-presentation offers clear added value for both sides. It allows your counterpart to see you as an individual and (potential) employee in action. The presentation allows you to show how well you’ve prepared yourself and how you act while presenting. This gives a much more comprehensive impression of you and how you conduct yourself – more than a standard CV could ever do.

Why you, as a job candidate, can benefit from an effective self-presentation.

Doesn’t a self-presentation just mean more stress and nervousness? Not necessarily. In fact, it may even make things easier for you. Why? Because it facilitates something that documents and a question-and-answer situation simply cannot: the opportunity to really show your personality. And a convincing and confident personality will impress a recruiter more than diplomas and references. Presenting yourself also puts you in the driver’s seat: you decide how you want to market yourself, and you can prepare yourself accordingly.

What do employers and HR managers look for in self-presentations?

A quick glance at your CV is enough to find out some details about your career. The self-presentation goes beyond that. It's not just about describing yourself; it’s about selling yourself. How organized and prepared are you? How strong are your communication and social skills? How do you deal with stressful situations? More than anything, that’s what employers and recruiters want to see in your self-presentation.

With a well-prepared self-presentation, you can show:

  • • ...your organized, independent way of working.
  • • ...your ability to explain your opinions.
  • • ...your talent to communicate clearly and convincingly.
  • • ...your drive and self-confidence.

What should go into a self-presentation during a job interview?

As a rule, you’ll only have a few minutes to present yourself as part of a job application. What information you give about yourself hast to be boiled down to the essentials. The key word is "relevant". After all, the point is to show why you are the right choice for this particular position. What’s important for your counterpart and what the position demands influence what you present.

This type of self-presentation should answer the following questions:

  • • ... Who are you and where do you come from? : Name, age, where you live/come from.
  • • ... What’s your background? Milestones in education, studies, work experience.
  • • ... hy did you choose this career path? Motivation, goals, ideals.
  • • ... Do you have any other relevant experience or knowledge? : Foreign languages, stays abroad, internships, projects, voluntary work, relevant hobbies/interests.
  • • ... What soft skills do you bring to the table? Strengths, personal characteristics.
  • • ... Why are you here? Qualifications for the position, motivation for applying.

What doesn’t belong in a self-presentation?

Lengthy explanations and tangents need to be avoided. The point is not to tell a lot about yourself, but to share the essentials – and to do so in a concise, convincing manner. When designing your self-presentation, try and avoid too many bells and whistles as well. People want to get to know YOU, not your presentation design skills.

And never forget: Honesty is the best policy. False statements will be found out sooner or later and will only work against you.

A self-presentation template: communicate content in an interesting way.

Some of you might be thinking, the most important information about myself is already in my application. So why do I need a self-presentation? In order to really stand out from the crowd, you need to go a step further and show who’s behind that information. To do this, you need to use all that information to tell your personal story, including reasons for applying, personal anecdotes, goals, etc. Having this kind of framework allows you to share your personal and professional information with confidence. Because if you're not convinced of yourself, why should others be?

Here are some questions that you can give an interesting, convincing answer to:

  • • ...What motivates you in your career?
  • • ...What are you proud of and why?
  • • ...Why was a particular project so meaningful to you?
  • • ...What or who has had a significant impact on you?
  • • ...What would you like to achieve through your work?

How creative can you get in a self-presentation?

You usually can't go wrong with a classic, professionally delivered self-presentation. But many applicants are looking for a way to stand out from the crowd and increase their chances. The success of a creative self-presentation depends, of course, on the industry and the position you are applying for. Your chances of getting into the executive suite of a bank with jokes and a picture from your last Halloween party are probably slim. If you want to present yourself as the perfect vacation club entertainer well, that’s a different story. As a rule, restraint is always recommended.

If you want to add an individual touch to your self-presentation, it's best to do so right at the start. What you say and how it’s delivered should correspond to the position you're aiming for. With an original introduction, you can attract your audience’s attention and set yourself apart from other applicants.

Example: If the company operates abroad and Spanish language skills are required, you could start by briefly introducing yourself in Spanish.

Presenting yourself with PowerPoint: Should you mention weaknesses?

A work history with interruptions and detours, or qualifications that don’t quite meet the requirements:  these are things that make applicants sweat. In a classic job interview, you don’t have any influence on whether you'll be asked about them or not. But what about in a self-presentation? Should weak points be skipped over and avoided?

There is no clear answer to this question. Of course, you should never go into length and detail about this sort of thing. But certain information, such as a noticeable gap in your work history, will attract even more attention if you give the impression you have something to hide.

Instead, maybe you can sell your supposed weakness as a strength. HR managers know that work history is rarely a straight line. Life experience and motivation are worth more today than a seamless career. If they weren’t interested in you, you wouldn't have gotten to the point of presenting yourself at all.

You might even score points if you manage to sell a professional crisis as a courageous new start or lack of qualifications as a personal challenge.

Can a self-presentation also be given without PowerPoint?

Generally speaking, a self-presentation can also be made without using presentation software. However, PowerPoint is almost always the standard presentation tool in companies today. A self-presentation with prepared slides shows that you’ve put the work in and you’re comfortable with technology and software. PowerPoint also provides a huge variety of design options and professional visual support for your content.

Other presenting tools, such as a flipchart or whiteboard, are only recommended for the most confident and experienced of presenters. Writing legibly and without mistakes when nervous is a challenge and can throw off your flow of speech and rhythm. A prepared PowerPoint presentation makes all this, nerves or no nerves, much easier.

Choosing the right self-presentation PowerPoint template.

It's not only the content of your interview that matters. You can also score points with an appealing and professional design. Choosing the right PowerPoint template guarantees a high-quality, coherent design and makes it easier for you to create your self-presentation.

Think about what you want to say about yourself and what your counterpart wants to know. These considerations are also important when choosing the layout and template for your self-presentation. In our range, you'll find a large selection of layouts with different imagery to choose from. You can decide which self-presentation layout will best express your personal ambitions.

Self-presentation template: slide design

A well-designed template provides the right visual support for your self-presentation. But keep in mind, the design should never be the focal point of your presentation. The focus should be on you, of course. From a design point of view, less is more. Too much text, inconsistent slide design, and a jumble of colorful graphics and images will only confuse and distract from you.

In contrast, a clean, streamlined design puts the focus on the essentials. Choosing the right templates will provide your content with the perfect backdrop and won’t distract from your oral presentation. Our templates include useful, well-organized diagrams and tables that will help you get to the heart of the facts you want to communicate.

A popular PowerPoint tool for self-presentations is the roadmap that you can use to visualize your career, milestone by milestone. How minimalist or creative the design depends on the company and profession in question. Stronger visuals, e.g., presenting your own work with embedded photos or videos, can be a definite advantage in creative industries.

Things to keep in mind when delivering your presentation.

It's not only what you say that counts, but how you say it. Speaking freely, making eye contact, facial expressions and body language are important and often say more than words alone. This is why preparation is key for your self-presentation. Filming yourself while you practice is a fantastic idea. A test audience of friends or family can provide helpful feedback.

Also pay attention to your voice. The volume and tempo with which you speak should be strong but not forced. In other words, avoid yelling or rushing. You can avoid the dreaded monotone delivery by building in emphasis and pauses.

The goal is to communicate your content in an interesting and engaging way.

Here’s an overview of some key points for delivering a strong self-presentation:

  • • ...Maintain good but relaxed posture.
  • • ...Incorporate friendly, natural facial expressions.
  • • ...Establish eye contact.
  • • ...Formulate short, easy-to-follow sentences.
  • • ...Don’t read off your slides.
  • • ...Speak calmly and clearly.
  • • ...Build in pauses and emphasize key points.

Self-presentations at assessment centers

If you're invited to an assessment center, expect to give a short self-presentation. You’ll typically have little to no time to get ready while you're there so come prepared. Self-presentations of 2-7 minutes are the norm.

Sometimes you'll be asked for specific content. You might have to talk about a formative experience in your career or something similar.

Unlike the classic job interview, you may be asked to give a presentation in pairs or in a group. Sometimes you may even be asked to introduce another person.

Finally, expect critical follow-up questions – it’s often about testing your ability to handle stressful situations.

Here are some key self-presentation tips in a nutshell:

  • • ... Content: Personal details, career, qualifications, soft skills, motivation.
  • • ... Length: A few minutes (usually 2-7 minutes)
  • • ...Design: Clean, streamlined but also expressive
  • • ... Goal: Present information about yourself clearly and confidently, show your personality and highlight skills and qualifications
  • • ... Do’s: Present information efficiently, choose an appropriate and expressive design, present confidently and assertively, be well-prepared and practice!
  • • ... Don’ts: Make false statements, overload slides, talk at length, read from slides

The important thing is that you capture the audience's attention from the beginning by making an interesting introduction. The main part is where you present your topic, ideally divided into sections. You can be creative with it - incorporate images, videos, stories or interactive polls . We generally recommend using different kinds of elements, as that makes the presentation more lively. Make sure your main part is well structured, so your audience can follow. In the conclusion, you should give a short summary of the points you made without adding any new information. You can also make an appeal to your audience in the end.

2. Useful Phrases

Here you'll find several phrases that you'll need in every presentation. Of course, you should adapt them and use them in a context that is suitable for your setting. The phrases are divided into subcategories so you can find what you're looking for more easily.

Starting a presentation in english: methods and examples.

  • By Jake Pool

self presentation in english ppt

If you’re going to make it in the professional world, most likely you’ll have to give a presentation in English at some point. No reason to get nervous!

Most of the work involved lies in the introduction. You may or may not need an English presentation PPT file, your topic, audience, or time limit may vary, but a strong opening is a must no matter what! Everything that follows can build from the opening outline you present to your audience.

Let’s look at some guidelines for starting a presentation in English. If you can master this part, you’ll never have to worry about the rest!

Opening in a Presentation in English

While it’s important to have your entire presentation organized and outlined, planning and organization are especially important in the introduction. This is what will guide you through a clear and concise beginning. Let’s look at how to start a presentation with well-organized thoughts .

Introduction Outline

  • Introduce yourself and welcome everyone.
  • State the purpose of your presentation
  • Give a short overview of the presentation

As we say, it’s as easy as 1-2-3. (No need for a more detailed English presentation script!) Let’s examine the first step.

1. Introduce Yourself & Welcome Everyone

The self-introduction is your opportunity to make a good first impression. Be sure to open with a warm welcome and use language that is familiar and natural. Based on your audience, there are a few different expressions you can use to start your presentation.

If you’re presenting to coworkers who may already know you:

  • Hello, [name] here. I would like to thank you all for your time. As you may know, I [describe what you do/your job title] I look forward to discussing [topic] today.
  • Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone. Thank you for being here. For those who don’t know me, my name is [name], and for those who know me, hello again.

If you’re presenting to people you’ve never met:

  • Hello everyone, it’s nice to meet you all. My name is [name] and I am the [job/title].
  • Hello. Welcome to [event]. My name is [name] and I am the [job/title]. I’m glad you’re all here.

There are certainly more ways to make an introduction. However, it’s generally best to follow this format:

  • Start with a polite welcome and state your name.
  • Follow with your job title and/or the reason you’re qualified to speak on the topic being discussed.

2. State the Purpose of Your Presentation

Now that your audience knows who you are and your qualifications, you can state the purpose of your presentation. This is where you clarify to your audience what you’ll be talking about.

So, ask yourself, “ What do I want my audience to get from this presentation? ”

  • Do you want your audience to be informed?
  • Do you need something from your audience?
  • Do you want them to purchase a product?
  • Do you want them to do something for the community or your company?

With your goal in mind, you can create the next couple of lines of your presentation. Below are some examples of how to start.

  • Let me share with you…
  • I’d like to introduce you to [product or service]
  • Today I want to discuss…
  • I want to breakdown for you [topic]
  • Let’s discuss…
  • Today I will present the results of my research on [topic]
  • By the end of this presentation, you’ll understand [topic]
  • My goal is to explain…
  • As you know, we’ll be talking about…

When talking about the purpose of your presentation, stick to your goals. You purpose statement should be only one to three sentences. That way, you can give your audience a clear sense of purpose that sets them up for the rest of the presentation.

3. A Short Overview of the Presentation

The final step in starting your presentation is to give a short outline of what you’ll be presenting. People like a map of what to expect from a presentation.

It helps them organize their thoughts and gives a sense of order. Also, it lets the audience know why they’re listening to you. This is what you’ll use to grab their attention, and help them stay focused throughout the presentation.

Here are some examples of how you can outline your presentation:

  • Today, I’m going to cover… Then we’ll talk about… Lastly, I’ll close on…
  • We’re going to be covering some key information you need to know, including…
  • My aim with this presentation is to get you to… To do that we’ll be talking about…
  • I’ve divided my presentation into [number] sections… [List the sections]
  • Over the next [length of your presentation] I’m going to discuss…

That’s it! It’s as simple as 1-2-3. If you have a fear of public speaking or are not confident about presenting to a group of people, follow these three steps. It’s a simple structure that can get you off to a good start. With that in mind, there are other ways to bring your introduction to the next level too! Read on for bonus tips on how to really engage your audience, beyond the basics.

For a Strong Presentation in English, Engage your Audience

Presentations aren’t everyone’s strongest ability, and that’s OK. If you’re newer to presenting in English, the steps above are the basics to getting started. Once you’re more comfortable with presenting, though, you can go a step further with some extra tricks that can really wow your audience.

Mastering the skill of engaging an audience will take experience. Fortunately, there are many famous speakers out there you can model for capturing attention. Also, there are some common techniques that English-speakers use to gain an audience’s attention.

*How and when you use these techniques in your introduction is at your discretion, as long as you cover the 3 steps of the introduction outline that we discussed earlier.*

Do or say something shocking.

The purpose of shocking your audience is to immediately engage them. You can make a loud noise and somehow relate the noise to your presentation. Or, you can say, “ Did you know that… ” and follow with a shocking story or statistic. Either way, the objective is to create surprise to draw their attention.

Tell a story

Telling a story related to your presentation is a great way to get the audience listening to you.

You can start by saying, “ On my way to [location] the other day… ” or “ On my way here, I was reminded of… ” and then follow with a story. A good story can make your presentation memorable.

Ask your audience to take part

Sometimes a good introduction that captures attention will involve asking for help from the audience. You can ask the audience to play a quick game or solve a puzzle that’s related to your presentation. Also, you could engage the audience with a group exercise. This is a great way to get people involved in your presentation.

There are many more ways to engage the audience, so get creative and see what you can think up! Here are some resources that will help you get started.

Also, if you want to get better at public speaking (and help your English speaking too!), a great organization to know about is the Toastmasters . The organization is dedicated to helping you be a better speaker, and there are many local groups in America. They offer free lessons and events to help you master your English speaking, and also offer additional help to paying members.

The Takeaway

A presentation in English? No problem, as long as your introduction sets you up for success . Admittedly, this can be easier said than done. Native speakers and non-native speakers alike sometimes struggle with getting a good start on their English presentation. But the advice above can help you get the confidence you need to lay a good foundation for your next speech !

How to Customize Your Creative Self-Introduction PPT Template

Here are tips on how to customize your self-introduction PowerPoint template. In this tutorial, I’ll be using PowerPoint version 16.65.

1. Choose Your Template

Choose your template

An important step in creating an introduction presentation is choosing a creative self-introduction PPT template. Templates save time instead of making a presentation from scratch.

This tutorial looks at the premium Grey PowerPoint template from Envato Elements. This template comes with over 50 slides. This means that you’ll have many slides to add information on. If you don’t find a self-introduction PPT template, try searching for a minimal presentation template.

2. Tell the Audience Who You are

One of the most important things you need to do for an all-about-me presentation template is to tell the audience who you are and why you’re giving the presentation. You need to tell your audience why they should know this information. You can do this by briefly discussing what your three main points are.

To do this, choose a slide that you want to use. For this step, we’ll be using the slide below:

Tell the audience who you are.

Next, you’ll need to add text boxes. First, click on the Insert tab above the toolbar. Then, click on the Draw a Text Box button in the toolbar. This turns your mouse into a textbox drawing tool.

Draw a diagonal line where you want the text box to be. Lastly, click inside the box and begin typing.

3. Have Consistency

Have consistency.

To have a professional-looking all-about-me presentation template, you need consistency in your text. This means that all your headings should be in the same font and font size.

To change your font size, begin by highlighting the text that you want to change. In the toolbar, you’ll see a field with the current font in it. This is the Font menu. If you click on the arrow in the field, a menu drops. Choose a font.

Next to the Font menu is a Font Size field. This is where you can change the font size. A menu drops if you click on the arrow in this field. Choose the right font size for you.

4. Personalize the Colors of Objects

Adding color is the best way to add a personal touch to your presentation. One way to add color to your slide is to change the color of objects. Slide #8 has an object, so the rest of the tutorial features slide #8.

Personalize the colors of objects.

First, select the object that you want to change. Click on the Shape Format tab.

Next, in the toolbar, click on the Format Pane button. A pane appears on the side of your window.

In the Fill section of the Format pane, you’ll see a Fill Color button that looks like a paint bucket. Click on this button. When you click on this button, a color menu appears. From the menu, choose the color that you want to use.

5.  Personalize the Background Color

Personalize the background color.

Changing the slide background color of your all about me PowerPoint template is another great way to personalize your presentation template. First, click on the Design tab above the toolbar.

Next, click on the Format Background button in the far right of the toolbar. When you click on this button, a Format Background pane appears on the side of your window.

In the pane, you’ll see a Fill Color button. Click on it. Choose a color from the menu that drops down.

5 Quick PowerPoint About Myself Presentation Slide Design Tips for 2024

1.  be selective.

Nobody wants your whole life story, so select the highlights when deciding what to include in your presentation.

perzona dark powerpoint presentation about myself templates

2.  Use Relatable Images

Though it's a cliche, pictures really are worth a thousand words. Choose images that support your presentation and help your audience relate to you. Make sure the images are of good quality. Fuzzy images are a huge turnoff.

3. Simplify Slide Design

If your slides are too busy, you'll lose your audience. Keep them simple, with a main point and no more than a couple of bullet points on each. You don't want your audience to feel frustrated because there's too much information for them to read.

perzona ppt template for self introduction

4. Include Media

Switch things up a bit by importing an audio or video clip into your presentation. That'll keep your audience engaged and interested in what you're saying.

5. Get Attention With Color

No matter what your color scheme, you can improve your slides by using color selectively to highlight important points and key messages.

10 Slides to use in a Personal Presentation

  • Personal branding /
  • Presentation design /
  • Public speaking

Featured image for “10 Slides to use in a Personal Presentation”

We have encountered so far two uses of personal presentation. One of them became more common in the past years, as the freelancing scene is burgeoning.

As you guessed, the personal presentation is used by freelancers as an extended business card. It includes the services the freelancers provide, their work process, recommendations, and any relevant information they want to share with potential clients. But we will discuss this in a further article.

self presentation in english ppt

In this article, we will cover the other use of the Personal Presentation, also known as the Interview Presentation, as a part of the hiring process for middle – senior positions. You reached a point in your career when a simple interview or CV is not enough to fully convey your potential. So, this is where a personal presentation comes in.

Giving a presentation will let you showcase your public speaking skills, knowledge about the position you are applying for, and the field you are working in. This will also help potential employers to better understand the value you are to bring to the company.

Reaching this level in your career comes with high expectations, and the classic PowerPoint templates won’t do you good. There is always the option of going with solid white background and standard font, but take into consideration the aesthetics of the organization. Or choose to work with a specialist that will highlight your attributes and channel your personality.

1. Cover slide

The first impression matters and we are not talking only about your physical appearance, but also your digital one. No one is judging you for how you look or how you dress, it all varies from company to company. Yes, you do need to give your best professional appearance and your presentation alike.

Employers can tell from the cover slide how much interest you put in the presentation. Make a first impression that lasts, get their attention from the beginning, and don’t let go.

self presentation in english ppt

You can also download some cover slide templates from here:

Cover slide templates

2. About me (similar to CV, the most important info)

Your audience has already seen your application, and your CV, they probably went through your social accounts such as Linkedin. This is the time to paint them a picture of yourself, and how you want them to see you from now on, both on a professional and personal level.

In a middle-senior position, some personal details are essential to creating a bond, as the employer is looking for someone that they can work with, that they can bring into the team.

Don’t go into specific details in this part, you are going to talk about your career, achievements, and skills later.

self presentation in english ppt

3. Career (where have you worked and what have you done there)

As in a CV, there is no need to present all the jobs you had had. Choose those who are relevant to the job you are applying and if you are specifically fond of one, you can mention it.

Pick 3 or 4 previous positions, mention the company you worked for, and from there you can extend to your main responsibilities and key learnings. It is important to present them as part of your story, not just bullets on the slide and we also recommend making a connection between those positions and the one you are applying for.

self presentation in english ppt

4. Achievements and Training

This can be a slide or two slides sections. To differentiate yourself from other candidates, ensure the achievements you are listing focus on the results rather than your duties. Quantify your achievements through specific situations and the results you gained.

You don’t need to brag about yourself, but most people forget that they also need to sell themselves (their results and their knowledge) in this personal presentation. Put out those achievements that would apply to the job and can even enter scenarios on how those situations can help you in the new job.

self presentation in english ppt

5. Skill Set

This is about you, about the skills that you worked to get. Again, it’s not about just listing the skills you have, bringing out examples, and experience, and telling on how you acquired that skill.

Before making out this list, research a few things about the company, what are they looking for in employees, what the job will require of you and what are the values of the company. This way it will come easier when presenting the skills that you have and that will help you with the new position.

self presentation in english ppt

6. Experience in the position applying

It’s not just the previous jobs you have, it’s the experiences you got from them. So rather than presenting the old jobs, talk about specific projects/situations that would apply to this one.

Talk about what happened, how you handled it, what were the results, and what have you learned from there. Ask yourself first how will this help me in the position that I am applying for. When you figured that out, the presentation will go smoother.

self presentation in english ppt

7. Your added value to the company

With all the experience you have and the research done on the company and the job, this is the time to tell your interviewers what is your vision of the company.

Using the skills you presented, explain how can you be an asset to them and what value will you add to the company.

self presentation in english ppt

8. First actions on the job

All the stories have built up the person standing right now in front of the committee. What they want to know now is what actions you would take if you got the position. Don’t go after some revolutionary actions, keep your feet on the ground and analyze what are the needs of the company and what can you do about them.

For every action you put on the presentation, think of the small steps and the resources you need to do that action. As a follow-up to this slide, have prepared a few notes with the results you are expecting from them.

self presentation in english ppt

9.  Final statement

The final statement needs to be a strong selling point, you can point out some of the skills and experience. Put all of this in a way that will bring benefits to the company.

Why you are the best candidate for this position and how will that bring value to the company?

self presentation in english ppt

10. References & Contact Info

Ask a previous employer for a short recommendation, remember to mention the name and the position of the author. The other references can be on your CV, and in this slide have just one written recommendation that is relevant for the job.

You arrived at the final slide, inviting your audience to a small Q&A while the reference is still displayed. They already have your contact info, but it’s recommended to put it on the final slide. Have the presentation ready to be sent to the committee if necessary.

self presentation in english ppt

Before preparing or delivering a personal presentation, consider these tips:

  • As you have seen in the article, we mention a lot that the information you put in the presentation is relevant to the job you are applying for;
  • Research the company and the job;
  • Keep in mind that your physical and digital appearance can denote how much you have prepared for this interview and how much you want the position;
  • You don’t need to be a presentation designer, you can always keep it simple. Though, avoid using regular templates, and personalize the presentation to your aspect;
  • Have the presentation ready to be delivered before the interview.

We can always help you prepare the specific presentation and you can take your time to prepare for the interview. Send us a message and let’s talk about you!

How to Introduce Yourself in a Presentation

Last Updated: October 4, 2023 Fact Checked

This article was co-authored by Patrick Muñoz . Patrick is an internationally recognized Voice & Speech Coach, focusing on public speaking, vocal power, accent and dialects, accent reduction, voiceover, acting and speech therapy. He has worked with clients such as Penelope Cruz, Eva Longoria, and Roselyn Sanchez. He was voted LA's Favorite Voice and Dialect Coach by BACKSTAGE, is the voice and speech coach for Disney and Turner Classic Movies, and is a member of Voice and Speech Trainers Association. Introducing yourself in a presentation is more than just saying your name. It’s an opportunity for you to share relevant details about yourself and connect with your audience. It also sets the tone for the rest of the talk. How you introduce yourself will influence how your audience receives the message you want to get across. Make your next introduction flawless by presenting the most engaging information about yourself. Be sure to prepare the introduction in advance and start with an attention-grabbing technique to connect to the audience.

Including Relevant Information in Your Introduction

Step 1 State your name clearly.

  • If you have an unusual or difficult to pronounce name, you may want to add a small remark to help your audience remember it. For example, you can say “My name is Jacob Misen, like ‘risen’ but with an M.”
  • Try to make eye contact with parts of audience during your presentation as well. [1] X Research source

Step 2 Communicate your contribution to get the audience excited.

  • If you are VP of Marketing at a large company, it can actually be much more effective to say something like “I have more than a decade of experience using Facebook marketing ads to target clients in the dance industry” rather than simply stating your job title.

Step 3 Leave extra details on a handout or powerpoint slide.

  • You can also specifically refer your audience to the handout or powerpoint for more information. For example, if you want to let them know that you have articles in many international newspapers but you don’t want to list them all out, simply say “I’ve written for a number of internationally recognized news organizations. You can find the full list on the first page of my handout.”

Step 4 Save some relevant details about yourself for later in the presentation.

  • For example, you could say “when I designed a website for Richard Branson last year …” to inform your audience that you have an impressive resume, without having to list it all for them in your introduction.

Step 5 Plan a smooth transition from the introduction to your content.

  • Try concluding your introduction by mentioning a client or project you were working on that directly relates to the topic of your presentation. For example: “I’ve had the pleasure of working with NXP Semiconductors for the past three years. Just last week we encountered a problem with our logistical database...” and then lead into your presentation about a new software that will solve everyone’s logistical hiccups.

Grabbing Your Audience’s Attention Before Your Introduction

Step 1 Set the mood with music to get the audience energized.

  • If you don’t have music that can tie to your presentation, you can use a song with the theme of beginning. For example, if you are presenting at a sales meeting, play some soft jazz as participants enter. Then, when it’s time for you to start, play the Black Eyed Peas chorus of “Let’s Get it Started” to get your audience’s attention. You can then open with an energetic “Good morning!” or “Good Afternoon” as the music ends.
  • Remember to choose music that’s appropriate to the event. An academic conference may not be the best place for pop music, for example (unless you are presenting research on pop music, of course).

Step 2 Use an attention-grabbing quotation before you introduce yourself.

  • For example, if you are presenting on the design of a new user-friendly coffee machine, you may start your presentation by referencing Elon Musk: “Any product that needs a manual to work is broken,” and then go on to say “My name is Laurie Higgens, and my coffee machine doesn’t come with a manual.” Speak briefly about your relevant experience and qualifications, and then dive into presenting your design.
  • Avoid cliche or overused motivational quotes the audience has probably already heard many times.
  • Be sure to correctly cite your quote.

Step 3 Get the audience thinking by leading with a revealing statistic.

  • For example, you might start with “According to Time magazine, Americans filled 4.3 billion prescriptions and doled out $374 billion on medicine in 2014.” Then, introduce yourself and your qualifications in medical research and transition into a presentation about how to prevent doctors from over prescribing medication to their patients.
  • Remember to cite the source of your statistics. You will look more professional and reliable, and the audience will be able to follow up on the information if they wish.

Step 4 Connect to the audience and invite them to reflect with a question.

  • If you are giving a presentation about a new airport security-friendly travel bag, try starting your presentation with “How many of you have ever stood in line at airport security and nearly missed your flight?”
  • You can also invite your audience to close their eyes and imagine something as you lead up to your question.
  • Don’t be discouraged if your audience doesn’t raise their hands when you ask a question. Sometimes these questions seem more rhetorical to an audience, or maybe they are just shy. You can often see signs that they are still engaging with the question if people are nodding or smiling after you ask it.

Step 5 Employ humor to relax yourself and the audience.

  • Try telling stories, showing pictures on a powerpoint, or using quotations.
  • Being funny not only puts your audience at ease, but it also helps them remember you after the presentation. [10] X Research source

Step 6 Involve the audience if you are presenting to a small group.

  • For example, if you are making a presentation about a pizza delivery app, ask your audience members to tell their name, their favorite pizza topping, and a situation where they’ve had a particularly amazing or awful experience with food delivery.

Preparing Before Your Presentation

Step 1 Make a plan and write it down.

  • When it’s time to present, it’s probably best to just write down a few notes or key words to remind you of what you want to say so you don’t just read off your note cards.
  • Think about your overall intention as a speaker. Are you trying to educate, enlighten, or entertain the audience? Figure out the effect you want to have on the listener so your presentation is impactful.

Step 2 Rehearse your introduction with a friend.

  • If you don’t have a friend to watch your presentation, record yourself on video and play it back later to refine your presentation skills. It can be uncomfortable to watch yourself on video, but it will help you nail your introduction. You can even record your whole presentation. Keep recording and re-recording until you are happy with it. Then you know the audience will be happy too.

Step 3 Research the culture where you will present so you don’t offend anyone.

  • The best resource to learn about the local culture is the locals themselves. If you have a contact where you will be speaking, ask them about customs, dress code, and how humor is usually received. If you don’t know anyone personally, try searching in industry-specific online forums. Find YouTube videos of presentations given in the area that are relevant to your industry.

Expert Q&A

Patrick Muñoz

  • Don’t spend too much time introducing yourself. Your introduction should be short and to the point so you can get on to your main presentation material. Depending on the length of your presentation, your introduction should be between 20 seconds and 2 minutes long. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0

About This Article

Patrick Muñoz

To introduce yourself at the start of your presentation, all you need to do is state your name and tell the audience any relevant experience or skills you have. For example, say something like, “My name is Jacob Misen, and I have over a decade of experience using Facebook marketing ads in the dance industry.” If you have a broad range of relevant experience, you can bullet point a few examples on your opening slide instead of reading them out. Once you’ve introduced yourself, smoothly transition into your presentation. For instance, you can mention a client or project you’ve recently worked on that relates to the topic of your presentation. For more tips, including how to practice your presentation, read on!
