Definition of a polynomial in one variable, with examples and counter examples. Coefficients of a polynomial, terms of a polynomial and zero polynomial. Degree of a polynomial. Constant, linear, quadratic and cubic polynomials. Monomials, binomials, trinomials. Factors and multiples. Zeros of a polynomial. Motivate and State the Remainder Theorem with examples. Statement and proof of the Factor Theorem. Factorization of ax2 + bx + c, a ≠ 0 where a, b and c are real numbers, and of cubic polynomials using the Factor Theorem. Recall of algebraic expressions and identities. Verification of identities:

History – Geometry in India and Euclid’s geometry. Euclid’s method of formalizing observed phenomenon into rigorous Mathematics with definitions, common/obvious notions, axioms/postulates and theorems. The five postulates of Euclid. Showing the relationship between axiom and theorem, for example: (Axiom)

1. Given two distinct points, there exists one and only one line through them. (Theorem)

2. (Prove) Two distinct lines cannot have more than one point in common.

2. LINES AND ANGLES (15 Periods)

1. (Motivate) If a ray stands on a line, then the sum of the two adjacent angles so formed is 180O and the converse.

2. (Prove) If two lines intersect, vertically opposite angles are equal.

3. (Motivate) Lines which are parallel to a given line are parallel.

3. TRIANGLES (22 Periods)

1. (Motivate) Two triangles are congruent if any two sides and the included angle of one triangle is equal to any two sides and the included angle of the other triangle (SAS Congruence).

2. (Prove) Two triangles are congruent if any two angles and the included side of one triangle is equal to any two angles and the included side of the other triangle (ASA Congruence).

3. (Motivate) Two triangles are congruent if the three sides of one triangle are equal to three sides of the other triangle (SSS Congruence).

4. (Motivate) Two right triangles are congruent if the hypotenuse and a side of one triangle are equal (respectively) to the hypotenuse and a side of the other triangle. (RHS Congruence)

5. (Prove) The angles opposite to equal sides of a triangle are equal.

6. (Motivate) The sides opposite to equal angles of a triangle are equal.

4. QUADRILATERALS (13 Periods)

1. (Prove) The diagonal divides a parallelogram into two congruent triangles.

2. (Motivate) In a parallelogram opposite sides are equal, and conversely.

3. (Motivate) In a parallelogram opposite angles are equal, and conversely.

4. (Motivate) A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if a pair of its opposite sides is parallel and equal.

5. (Motivate) In a parallelogram, the diagonals bisect each other and conversely.

6. (Motivate) In a triangle, the line segment joining the mid points of any two sides is parallel to the third side and in half of it and (motivate) its converse.

5. CIRCLES (17 Periods)

1. (Prove) Equal chords of a circle subtend equal angles at the center and (motivate) its converse.

2. (Motivate) The perpendicular from the center of a circle to a chord bisects the chord and conversely, the line drawn through the center of a circle to bisect a chord is perpendicular to the chord.

3. (Motivate) Equal chords of a circle (or of congruent circles) are equidistant from the center (or their respective centers) and conversely.

4. (Prove) The angle subtended by an arc at the center is double the angle subtended by it at any point on the remaining part of the circle.

5. (Motivate) Angles in the same segment of a circle are equal.

6. (Motivate) If a line segment joining two points subtends equal angle at two other points lying on the same side of the line containing the segment, the four points lie on a circle.

7. (Motivate) The sum of either of the pair of the opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral is 180° and its converse.

UNIT V: MENSURATION 1.

1. AREAS (5 Periods)

Area of a triangle using Heron’s formula (without proof)

Question 1 . Give three examples of data which you can get from your day-to-day life.

Here are the three examples which are related to our day-to-day life :

• The number of boys in a sports team.
• Electricity bills for last one year.
• The number of students appearing for board exams at your school.

Question 2 . The height of 20 students of class V are noted as follows

4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 4, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 4, 3.5, 3.5, 4.2, 4.6, 4.2, 4.7, 5.5, 5.3, 5, 5.5.

• Make a frequency distribution table for the above data.
• Which is the most common height and which is the rarest height among these students?

2. The most common heights are 4 and 5.5. The rarest heights are 4.6 and 4.7.

Question 3: The number of family members in 10 flats of society are

2, 4, 3, 3, 1,0,2,4,1,5.

Find the mean number of family members per flat.

Number of family members in 10 flats -2, 4, 3, 3, 1, 0, 2, 4, 1, 5.

So, we get,

Mean = sum of observation/ total no of observations

Mean = (2 + 4+ 3 + 3 + 1 + 0 + 2 + 4 + 1 + 5) / 10

Mean = 25/10 = 2.5

Question 4.The following is the list of number of coupons issued in a school canteen during a week:

105, 216, 322, 167, 273, 405 and 346.

Find the average no. of coupons issued per day.

Number of coupons issued in a week: 105, 216, 322, 167, 273, 405 and 346.

Mean = (106+ 215+ 323+166+273+405+346)/ 7 = 1834/7

Question 5. The daily minimum questions solved by a student during a week were as under:

Find the mean.

Number of questions solved in a week: 35, 30, 27, 32, 23, 28.

Mean = sum of observation/ total no of observations = (35+30+27+32+23+28) / 6 = 175/6 = 29.167

Question 6.If the mean of six observations y, y + 1, y + 4, y + 6, y + 8, y + 5 is 13, find the value of y.

13 = ( y + y + 1+ y + 4+ y + 6+ y + 8+ y + 5) / 6

13 = (6y + 24)/6

(13 * 6) = 6y +24

(13 * 6) – 24 = 6y

(13 * 6) – 6 * 4 = 6y

6(13 – 4) = 6y

Question 7. The mean weight of a class of 34 students is 46.5 kg. If the weight of the new boy is included, the mean is rises by 500 g. Find the weight of the new boy.

The mean weight of 34 students = 46.5

Sum of the weight of 34 students = (46.5 * 34) = 1581

Change or increase in the mean weight when the weight of a new boy is added = 0.5

So, the new mean = (46.5 +0.5) = 47

So, let the weight of the new boy be y.

So, (sum of weight of 34 students + weight of new boy) / 35 = 47

(1581+ y)/ 35 = 47

1581 + y = 1645

y = 1645 – 1581 = 64

Question 8.The Number of books issued to 13 students in a class are:

25, 19, 24, 23, 29, 31, 19, 20, 22, 26, 17, 35, 21.

Find the median no. of books for the above data.

Let’s arrange the data given in ascending order – 17, 19, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 29,31,35.

n= 13, so it’s an odd number

Median = (n+1) / 2 observations

= (13+1)/ 2 = (14/2) th observation = 7th observation = 23

Question 9.The weight (in kg) of 7 students of a class are 44, 52, 55, 60, 50, 49, 45.

Find the median weight.

Let’s arrange the data given in ascending order – 44, 45, 49, 50, 52, 55, 60.

n= 7, so it’s an odd number

= (7+1)/ 2 = (8/2) th observation = 4th observation = 50 kg

ii. Which condition is the major cause of women’s ill health and death worldwide?

Ans: Reproductive health issues are the leading cause of women's illness and mortality globally, affecting 31.8% of women.

Ans: The factors are as follows:

2. The following data on the number of girls (to the nearest ten) per thousand boys in different sections of Indian society is given below:

i. Represent the information above by a bar graph.

Ans: The graph of the information presented above may be built by choosing an appropriate scale (1 unit = 100 girls for the y-axis) and representing section (variable) on the x-axis and number of girls per thousand boys on the y-axis.

Here, all the rectangle bars are of the same length and have equal spacing in between them.

ii. In the classroom discuss what conclusions can be arrived at from the graph.

Ans: The largest number of females per thousand boys (i.e., 970) is found in ST, while the lowest number of girls per thousand boys (i.e., 910) is found in urban areas.

In addition, the number of females per thousand boys is higher in rural regions than in cities, in backward districts than in non-backward districts, and in SC and ST districts than in non-SC/ST districts.

3. Given below are the seats won by different political parties in the polling outcome of a state assembly elections:

Ans: From the above graph it is clear that Political party ‘A’ won the maximum number of seats.

4. The length of\[40\] leaves of a plant are measured correct to one millimeter, and the obtained data is represented in the following table:

i. Draw a histogram to represent the given data.

Ans: The length of leaves is represented in a discontinuous class interval with a difference of \[1\] between them, as can be seen. To make the class intervals continuous, \[\dfrac{1}{2} = 0.5\] must be added to each upper class limit and \[0.5\] must be subtracted from the lower class limits.

The above histogram may be built using the length of leaves on the x-axis and the number of leaves on the y-axis.

On the y-axis, one unit symbolises two leaves.

ii. Is there any other suitable graphical representation for the same data?

Ans: Frequency polygon is another good graphical representation of this data.

iii. Is it correct to conclude that the maximum number of leaves are 153 mm long? Why?

Ans: No, because the maximum number of leaves (i.e.\[12\]) has a length of \[144.5{\text{mm}}\] to \[153.5{\text{mm}}\] It is not necessary for all of them to be \[153{\text{mm}}\]long.

5. The following table gives the life times of neon lamps:

Here, 1 unit on the y-axis represents 10 lamps.

ii. How many lamps have a lifetime of more than \[700\] hours?

Ans: It may be deduced that the number of neon lamps with a lifetime more than \[700\]is equal to the sum of the numbers of neon lamps with lifetimes of \[700,800\]and \[900\]. As a result, there are \[184\] neon bulbs with a lifetime of more than \[700\] hours \[(74 + 62 + 48 = 184)\].

6. The following table gives the distribution of students of two sections according to the mark obtained by them:

Represent the marks of the students of both the sections on the same graph by two frequency polygons. From the two polygons compare the performance of the two sections.

Ans: We can find the class marks of the given class intervals by using the following formula.

\[{\text{Class mark  = }}\dfrac{{{\text{Upper class limit  +  Lower class limit}}}}{2}\]

The frequency polygon can be constructed as follows, with class markings on the x-axis and frequency on the y-axis, and an appropriate scale \[(1{\text{ unit  =  3 for the y - axis}})\].

It can be observed that the performance of students of section ‘A’ is better than the students of section ‘B’ in terms of good marks.

7. The runs scored by two teams A and B on the first 60 balls in a cricket match are given below:

The histogram can be generated using the number of letters on the x-axis and the fraction of the number of surnames per 2 letters interval on the y-axis, as well as an acceptable scale (1 unit = 4 students for the y axis).

ii. Write the class interval in which the maximum number of surnames lie.

Ans: The maximum number of surnames in the class interval is 6-8 since it contains 44 surnames, which is the maximum for this data.

The three measures of central tendency are Mean, Median and mode.

5. When are frequency polygons used?

Frequency polygons are used when data is very large and continuous.  It is generally used to compare two different sets of data of the same nature. For example, comparing the performance of two different sections of the same class.

6. What is the main focus of 12th Ch Statistics Class 9?
