Teaching Excellence Framework Gold Award

Gold-standard education

Our teaching, learning and student experience is outstanding, recognised by a Gold rating from the Office for Students in the 2023 national assessment (Teaching Excellence Framework).

Why we’re gold-rated

Teaching and assessment

You’ll study and learn with academics who are active researchers, experts in their field and have a passion for their subjects. Our approach to teaching will provide you with the knowledge, opportunities, and support you need to grow and succeed in a global workplace. Find out more about our approach to teaching and learning .

Teaching format

Our LLB is taught mainly through problem-based learning. This method will develop your skills of analysis, reasoning and judgement. Through this approach you'll also develop communication and project management skills that will enhance your effectiveness in the world of work.

You will be part of a student law firm during your studies. Your firm will be faced with complex legal issues as part of each of your modules; you will decide how you want to operate as a firm, build relationships within your team, and collectively approach these problems in a realistic way. Your firm may be working alongside or in opposition to other firms.

You will learn to identify the key legal principles, and establish what you know as well as what you need to ascertain. Through this process, you will reflect on deeper social and theoretical issues, such as questions of justice, fairness and human rights. Tutor-facilitators will guide you through particular points and issues, helping you maximise your time of study.

You'll also learn through a range of other resources including: plenary lectures, written subject guides, and a variety of relevant material in our virtual learning environment.

Timetabled activities

In your first year, you can expect:

Lectures6-7 hours per week
Seminars6-7 hours per week

These figures are representative of a typical week. Your contact hours will vary throughout the year due to your module choices, non-compulsory classes, exam periods and changes to scheduled activities.

Outside your timetabled hours, you'll study independently. This may include preparation for classes, follow-up work, wider reading, practice completion of assessment tasks, or revision.

In the UK, full-time students are expected to spend 1,200 hours a year learning. That's about 40 hours of classes and independent study each week during semesters. Everyone learns at a different rate, so the number of hours you spend on independent study will be different to other students on your course.

York Law School has a dedicated Problem Based Learning Suite and mock up court room for our students. You can use these during your contact hours and for independent studying.

Teaching location

York Law School  is located on Campus East. Nearly all of your teaching will take place within the Law and Management building or nearby on Campus East.

About our campus

Our beautiful green campus offers a student-friendly setting in which to live and study, within easy reach of the action in the city centre. It's easy to get around - everything is within walking or pedalling distance, or you can use the fast and frequent bus service. Take a campus tour .

Assessment and feedback

York Law School uses two main forms of assessment, formative and summative.

  • Formative assessment provides feedback on coursework tasks and your general contribution in PBL and Skills sessions. This does not count towards your final module grades.
  • Summative assessment consists of formal skills-based coursework tasks, examinations and formal assessment of individual contribution in PBL and Skills sessions as part of some modules. These assessments will count towards your final module grades.

You will sit all examinations (and assignments generally) as an individual. They have, however, been specially designed to reflect the PBL learning process and so facilitate group work as a means of preparation.

In addition, many modules, including all Foundation Stream modules, will assess your performance using coursework, including focused essays and more general reflective assignment.

York University

The combined Juris Doctor/Master of Arts in Philosophy (JD/MA) program, offered by Osgoode Hall Law School and the Department of Philosophy at York University, provides students with the opportunity to develop skills and acquire knowledge at the intersection of the naturally related disciplines of law and philosophy. The program is ideal for students who wish to pursue either further post-graduate study and ultimately an academic career, or opportunities in a variety of careers in legal practice.

Admission Requirements

Students must apply and be admitted separately to each of the JD and MA (Philosophy) programs, normally in the same year, before starting either program. Upon admission to the combined program, students will meet with the co-directors (Professors Michael Giudice in Philosophy and Francois Tanguay-Renaud in Law) to develop a plan of study that maximizes the synthesis of the two disciplines through appropriate selection of courses and research topics.

Program Structure and Requirements

Students admitted to the combined program will be expected to complete all requirements within four years of full-time study. All students in the combined program will follow a common path

In Year 1, students will be registered in the JD program and complete the regular first year of JD studies.

In Year 2, students will be registered for three terms of full-time study in the MA in Philosophy and will receive MA funding. Students will follow the requirements of the Master’s by Major Research Paper (MRP option). This option requires students to complete 18 credits in coursework in philosophy at the graduate level (including PHIL 5800 3.0, Core Theoretical Philosophy 1 and PHIL 5802 3.0, core Practical Philosophy 1) and a supervised MRP. All coursework for the MA must be completed during Year 2. Before the end of Year 2 students will meet again with the program co-directors to identify an MRP topic. The co-directors will also identify a committee of two professors, one from Philosophy and one from Law, to supervise the MRP. The expectation is that students will begin working on the MRP during the third term of Year 2, and continue working on it throughout Years 3 and 4. The topic of the Major Research Paper, to be approved by the co-directors, will be situated appropriately at the intersection of law and philosophy and will consist of an original piece of scholarly writing of approximately 60–70 pages.

In Years 3 and 4, students will return to Osgoode to complete the final two years of the JD. In addition to completing the MRP, students will be required during the final two years of the JD program to take one additional half course (3 credits) in philosophy at the graduate level. The MRP will count for 6 credits towards the JD and the additional philosophy course will count for 3 credits toward the JD.

Successful completion of the combined program will be validated by the issuance of two parchments, one for the JD and one for the MA, and transcripts issued in relation to the two programs will include a clear statement of the nature of the combined program.

Tsung-Dao Lee, 97, Physicist Who Challenged a Law of Nature, Dies

At 31, he and a colleague won the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering that subatomic particles, contrary to what scientists thought, are not always symmetrical.

A man in a suit delivers a lecture in front of a blue background.

By Dylan Loeb McClain

Tsung-Dao Lee, a Chinese American physicist who shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957 for overturning what had been considered a fundamental law of nature — that particles are always symmetrical — died on Sunday at his home in San Francisco. He was 97.

His death was announced in a joint statement by the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute at the Jiao Tong University in Shanghai and the China Center for Advanced Science and Technology in Beijing. Dr. Lee was a longtime professor at Columbia University.

The theory that Dr. Lee overturned was called the law of conservation of parity, which said that every phenomenon and its mirror image should behave precisely the same. At the time he challenged the theory, in 1956, it had been widely accepted for 30 years.

Dr. Lee was then a young professor at Columbia, where he had been promoted to full professor at age 29 — the youngest in the university’s history at that point.

He had become intrigued by a problem involving the decay of so-called K mesons, which are subatomic particles. These particles decay all the time, forming electrons, neutrinos and photons. Experiments had shown that when K mesons decayed, some exhibited changes that suggested that each differed from the others. But they also had identical masses and life expectancies, indicating that they were the same.

This apparent contradiction created quite a conundrum for physicists. They had assumed that weak nuclear forces, like meson decay, obeyed the law of conservation of parity just like the two other fundamental forces that govern quantum physics: strong nuclear forces, which bind protons and neutrons together in the nucleus, and electromagnetic forces, which govern the attraction and repulsion of electric charges and the behavior of light. In other words, scientists had assumed that the orientation of weak nuclear forces could always be reversed.
