Choose the right picture for primary 4 english composition.

For the Primary 4 composition exam, pupils are expected to be able to write a descriptive story of considerable length with meaningful content .

The first step to doing this is to choose the right picture or pictures to write the composition.

When choosing a picture to write a composition, pupils often select the one which they can immediately think of the *conflict (the main problem in a story) . Most do think that if a conflict quickly comes to their minds then the writing of the story should be just as easy.

However, not all conflicts are equal . This means some conflicts are more difficult to write than others and pupils will have difficulty only when they start to write the story. By then, it will be too late to write another story and they can only try their best to complete the writing even though they are struggling to write the details.

Therefore, choosing the right picture is the important first step to writing a mark-scoring composition.

Today, we will use a Primary 4 composition topic to explain how to choose the right picture and why.

As clearly depicted, not all the pictures look connected. The first important exam tip is there is no need to combine all 3 pictures. Some pupils mistakenly think that extra marks will be given if they write a composition which makes use of all 3 pictures.

Let’s look at the most common picture selection for the Primary 4 composition topic

A girl was lost in the train station.

At a glance, this conflict does seem to fit the title “The day you helped someone”. It seems very possible that a girl was lost in a train station and you helped her to find her mother.

1) Why was she lost? 

Most pupils are inclined to write that

a)  The girl’s mother boarded the train without her.

b)  The girl’s mother lost her in the crowded train station.

2) How did you help her?

If her mother boarded the train without her, how would you know where her mother had gone to? How were you going to reunite her with her mother?

Do you know who or where in the train station to bring the lost girl to for help?

If her mother lost her in the train station, remember that a train station is a rather confined space. Wouldn’t her mother easily find her or wouldn’t you easily find her mother?

Doesn’t this mean that there are not many helping actions which you can do?

Wouldn’t the story have to end rather quickly then?

Doesn’t this mean the story will be too short with insufficient helping actions ?

This is the type of conflict which is easily thought of but difficult to write a detailed composition on.

Let’s move on to the next picture selection:

A girl fell down at the playground.

It is true that you can help the girl after she fell down. Since you are helping the girl, the story does seem to fit the title.

However, consider the following question –

1) How did you help her?

Since she fell down, it is realistic to assume that you would :

  • help her to her feet
  • comfort her
  • help her home

Even though it fits the title, doesn’t the storyline seem relatively brief and simple?

When pupils write a composition based on this storyline, it is likely that :

a) Most pupils will find it challenging to expand the helping actions above with meaningful details.

b) Some pupils will try to lengthen the story with unnecessary content.

This conflict is considered too small to be the main problem for the story. This results in pupils struggling to complete the writing of the story.

Let’s look at the last picture selection:

A girl was lost in the shopping centre.

To consider if this conflict is story-worthy, you will need to consider the same question – How did you help her?

  • retrace the girl’s steps by bringing her to where she was last at with her mother.
  • bring her around the shopping centre to look for her mother.
  • bring her to the Information Counter to seek the staff’s help.
  • accompany her till her mother arrived.

As you move around in the shopping centre, there are actions which you can create to help the girl.

More movement leads to more actions and ultimately more content.

This conflict can create sufficient meaningful content for pupils to write a descriptive story.

When pupils learn how to evaluate and select the right picture or pictures, it is the first step to writing a good composition.

For Primary 4 pupils, it is important to note that smart picture selection is an important skill for Primary 5 and Primary 6 composition writing. Therefore, it is always good to master the skill early.

Primary 4 Composition Caught in the rain

This Primary 4 English composition was not done in one of my P4 classes. It was the SA2 Composition theme for one of our Primary 4 students.

During the year that she has been with us, our student has grown from strength to strength. Her weekly writing has become much more descriptive and she even creates her own creative similes and imagery as she writes (as seen in this composition.)

She scored 19/20 for her SA2 Composition and I asked her mother if I could put her composition on the blog. I have corrected the few grammar mistakes she made in her composition but the content is all hers.

Primary 4 composition model – Theme: Caught in the rain

Note to students

The model compositions in this blog are to help students generate ideas and to be used as a guide. Students are not allowed to copy the model compositions and then pass them off as their own work, especially in school. It is called plagiarism.

            The bell rang. You could hear the screeching of chairs and the pattering of footsteps as students burst out of their classrooms and made a beeline to the staircases in hoards. My friend, Jane, waited for me while I switched off the lights and  fans as I was the class monitress.

“Sarah! Are you done?”Jane called out to me.

I nodded my head and we both left the classroom, chatting animatedly. We both waved goodbye to each other as I set off from school as usual.

            As I was walking back, it suddenly started raining. Unfortunately, I did not bring my umbrella and within minutes, it was raining heavily. The raindrops fell like bullets from the sky. Soon, I was drenched from head to toe and my shirt stuck to my back like a second skin. My hair stuck to my face and I brushed my sopping hair off my face.  I decided to use my bag to shelter myself as it was waterproof. The wind howled like a wolf and I started to feel very cold and I wished I had a hot cup of chocolate.

            I was shaking like a leaf and sneezing like mad when I decided to make a dash for it. That way, I would be able to reach home faster. I ran as fast as lightning as I knew that I was going to be caught in a thunderstorm if I did not hurry back home. Lightning flashed through the sky like a whip while thunder cracked through the sky. I jumped every time I heard thunder as I was scared of thunder. I also knew that standing under a tree would also be a very bad idea as the tree could collapse on me if lightning struck it.

            I was nearing my house when I slipped and fell. There was a sharp pain in my knee and when I looked at it, I saw that it had been grazed and blood was oozing profusely out of the wound. My bag meanwhile had landed further away and I staggered to it. I grabbed it and searched inside for a tissue to prevent myself from losing more blood. I wrapped it around my leg and stumbled back home.

            When I reached my house’s gate, I placed my student card on the sensor and it opened. I rushed into my house, went into the shower, and freshened up. Once I had finished showering and eating my lunch, my mother helped me to bandage my wound and wanted to know everything that had happened. I told her everything and I kept on sneezing while I was telling her everything. I was then asked to rest and I had a hot cup of milk on my side table. I could not go to school the next day because I had a cold and when I returned, I had to use a lift because of the wound on my leg. I also had to get help from my mother  when I wanted to climb up the stairs to my bedroom which was on the second floor.

            I learned that I should not run in the rain because it is dangerous and that you can get injuries and a cold or a fever. I should always bring an umbrella so that if there is rain I will not catch a cold or have to run in the rain. I have never done that again since that incident.

Tara, the tinkerbell.

“Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way…” the cheery festive tune whizzed throughout the crowded MRT station. The golden streamers, silvery angels, green and red mistletoes, white LED lights and all the Christmassy embellishments had turned the entire MRT station into a winter wonderland for all commuters. However, I was completely immune to all the festivities and cheer around me. Boredom and frustration were swirling at the back of my mind. My arms were turning numb from the lack of blood circulation as numerous shopping bags dangled from them. Mother had instructed me to go to the nearest mall to get all the Christmas decorations for our house and my little sister, Tara, was to follow me. As if things could not get any worse, she was of no help at all. “Slow down, Tara! “I hollered after her, catching a glimpse of her sparkly silver headband as she wove through the burgeoning crowd of commuters and into the train. Mother also left me firm instructions to keep an eye on Tara. However, she proved to be trouble with a capital ‘T’.

Huffing and puffing, I finally managed to squeeze my way through all the commuters and saw her at the end of the train. Tara was decked from head to toe in her latest craze, fairies. Today, she was “Tinkerbell”. She was wearing a short green dress that had a pair of wings attached to its back. “Why are you so slow, Peter?” Tara had the cheek to ask when she spied me lumbering up. “Perhaps you need some pixie dust!” With a flourish, Tara dug her hand into the pouch strapped in front of her and drew out a fistful of glitter, scattering the contents all over me. “Pixie dust away!” Tara chuckled as she started to twirl and dance all around me.

That was the last straw that broke the camel’s back. Anger bubbled in the pits of my stomach like volcano lava. I was ready to explode as a red haze of infuriation clouded my vision. She had tested my patience beyond its limits. “Can you please be considerate to the commuters around you?” I hollered. Suddenly, I thought of a brilliant idea. It was time for revenge. “Do you know that Tinkerbell died at the end when Peter and Wendy left Neverland? No one wanted her. No one cared about her,” I retorted, my voice dripping with sarcasm. Horror washed over Tara’s face as she tried to come to terms with what I had just said. “You liar! Everyone loves fairies and fairies don’t die!” she sobbed brokenly before scampering away.

I rolled my eyes at Tara’s outburst. She was turning out to be a real spoilt brat. To me, she was definitely ‘Tara the Troublemaker’ instead of ‘Tara the Tinkerbell’. I hefted all the bags, ready to give chase. Tara had run all the way to the other end of the train. Strangely, when I walked up to her, she seemed different. Tara was darting her eyes from left to right to scan the cabin and she eyeballed everyone with suspicion. “Brother, I think someone is watching me,” she whispered meekly at me. Looking around the cabin, I spotted him; a lecherous old man sitting on the wheelchair seat was staring intently at Tara. Wrapping a protective arm around her shoulders, I snaked through the crowd away from the old man.

The old man remained in the wheelchair seat but he still continued staring at us, flashing me a toothy grin. Although goose bumps started breaking out all over my skin like an allergic reaction, I knew I had to stay strong and protect my younger sister. Mustering up my courage, I confronted the stranger. “Why are you staring at my sister?” I raised my voice considerably. The old man was caught off-guard and stuttered incoherently. All around me, nosy onlookers stopped and gawked at the scene. I had turned the tables around and the old man was rendered speechless by the sudden turn of events.

Finally, the old man lowered his explanation to a bare whisper and pointed sheepishly to the root of the problem. Tara was unglamorously exposed as the sides of her dress were unzipped. “I was trying to be considerate by not announcing it out loud to everyone. I showed her some hand signals but she did not get it,” he explained. I could see a scarlet red hue roasting Tara’s cheeks and all her facial features crumpled together as she cringed in mortification. She bit her lips and squinted her eyes tightly as a mask of embarrassment swallowed her face. Apologising and thanking the Good Samaritan, I pulled Tara out of the train at the next stop.

Finding a secluded corner where no one could see us, I helped her with her zip. I knew she was already utterly embarrassed and did not want her to feel even worse. “At least the old man was so considerate as to not reveal it out loud,” I told Tara. “You’re right, and thank you so much for helping me confront him. I would have been an embarrassment if I still had not known that my zip was open,” Tara replied. At that moment, I knew that no matter how annoying my sister was, I would still love her. I would never forget this considerate old man sitting in the wheelchair seat. Never. Truly, it is important to be kind and considerate to everyone around us.

“Watch out!” A shrill voice reverberated in the air. Only then did I realise that something was amiss. Things took an unfortunate turn. Looking up, I realised with absolute horror that it was a big watermelon falling. Time seemed to stretch forever. It was too late to react as the heavy fruit landed squarely on my head. The sudden crash seemed to echo inside my skull. I gritted my teeth in agony as excruciating pain radiated throughout my entire being. I let out an ear-piercing scream of pain as my legs gave way beneath me and the ground rushed up to meet me.

All the dark furniture in the office reflected the principal’s stoic personality. The trophies on the display shelves refracted the golden blustery rays of the sun that shone in from the windows. The principal touched the horn-rimmed glasses that perched on her nose. “So, how do you think I should punish you?” Her nasal voice drifted to Sean’s ears and he stood straight up with a start, then lowered his head to feign his guilt. “Detention would be too easy on you, don’t you think?” she asked him again. He masked his fear with a face of nonchalance and placed his arms firmly behind his back like a criminal awaiting trial.

Composition Marking Scheme for Primary School

Have you ever wondered what the primary school English composition marking scheme is?

In primary school, students’ English compositions are marked based on two areas – Content and Language .

Content refers to the relevance of ideas and story plot.  Language refers to the more technical parts of the essay such as grammar, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and the organisation aspect such as paragraphing, sequencing of events and the linking of ideas.

In primary school, the composition marking scheme for Content and Language for Primary 3 to 6 are:

  • Primary 3 and 4 – Content 10 marks / Language 10 marks
  • Primary 5 and 6 – Content 20 marks / Language 20 marks

The marking scheme for Primary 1 and 2 differs across schools.  Some schools grade their lower primary students’ English compositions using bands (eg. Band 1, Band 2, Band 3 and so on).  Some grade them using a number of stars or smiley faces (eg. 1 star/smiley face, 2 stars/smiley faces, 3 stars/smiley faces and so on).  There are also schools that mark their Primary 1 and 2 students’ compositions with a marking scheme totalling 10, 12 or 15 marks.  Therefore, the range is wide for Primary 1 and 2 composition marking.  This could be due to the STELLAR approach that is used to teach lower primary English.

How do teachers and PSLE markers mark students’ English compositions?

In the current PSLE English composition format , students are given a topic and three pictures.  They have to write their compositions based on the topic and at least one of the three pictures provided.

Most schools do not reveal their composition marking rubrics.  However, almost all students have these two areas clearly marked in their English compositions – Content and Language.  If you take a look at your child’s English compositions (Primary 3 to 6), you should see these two areas clearly stated either on top of their paper or at the end of the last page.  Some teachers like to label these two categories as C and L (C stands for Content and L for Language).

Although different schools might have different composition marking schemes, there is a general guideline.  A range of marks is given for each area of focus.  Teachers or markers mark students’ compositions and decide on the range that a student’s composition falls in for that particular area of focus.  Once the range is decided on, the teacher / marker then decide on the specific mark to award within that range.

Below are examples of a primary school English composition marking scheme: *Note that not every school uses the same marking scheme. However, for Primary 5 and 6, the marks for Content and Language is 20 marks each.  That is the same for every school in Singapore.

As mentioned earlier, Content refers mainly to the relevance of ideas and story plot.

How do we mark our students’ compositions?

In BIG IDEAZ Writing Academy , our students submit their writing assignments and compositions for marking.  Our Writing Coaches mark our students’ writing meticulously and usually try to provide as much detailed feedback as possible.  The purpose is for students to take in the feedback and edit their writing accordingly for improvement.  Once they have written their second draft, our Writing Coaches will mark it again.

It is not uncommon for our Writing Coaches to spend 30 to 40 minutes marking each piece of composition!

What do our Writing Coaches look for when marking our students’ compositions?

These are the few main areas:

1) Relevance of Ideas and Interesting Story Plot

Many primary school students struggle with coming up with interesting ideas for their stories.  Sometimes, their ideas might be interesting but after writing, they realised that those are not relevant to the topic at all!

Our Writing Coaches give detailed feedback on our students’ story ideas and provide suggestions to help them improve their story plot wherever possible.

2) Composition Framework 

We teach our students to use a simple composition writing framework to plan and write their compositions.  Our Writing Coaches look out for the parts of the framework and provide feedback if students need to develop any part of them.

3) Vocabulary

Using a wide range of vocabulary is another important part of writing great compositions.  Very often, we give our students examples of how to use a wider range of vocabulary in their compositions.  When they read our suggestions, they can see clearly for themselves how the words can be used in the stories that they have already written.  They learn how to replace ‘boring’ words with other nicer synonyms when writing their Draft 2.

Our Writing Coaches also correct students’ wrong word choice and provide examples of the correct word or phrase to be used.

4) Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling

As you can see from the marking scheme above, grammar, punctuation and spelling (we call them GPS) affect the Language marks of a piece of composition.  Therefore, it is important for students to spell words correctly and to use correct grammar and punctuation.

5) Paragraphing and Organisation

We give students feedback on their paragraphing and organisation too.  Some students like to write a huge chunk of sentences in one paragraph.  For better organisation, they should break up the long paragraph into two smaller ones.  Our Writing Coaches show students the appropriate place in their compositions to start a new paragraph.

6) Sentence Structure and Variety

Some students like to begin many sentences with the same word.  This makes their compositions sound boring and monotonous.  Our writing coaches will show them where and give them examples of how to begin sentences with different words.

As you can see from all the examples above, we do provide really detailed feedback.  That explains why our Writing Coaches take a significant amount of time to mark each piece of composition.

Not many teachers enjoy marking compositions.  There are a few obvious reasons.  Let’s be honest, it is tedious to mark students’ compositions!

When we asked our students how many pieces of compositions they write in school, most of them wrote about two to four pieces per semester, on average.  A common comment from parents and students is that some teachers take weeks to return the marked scripts.  Moreover, they do not provide much detailed feedback in their compositions.

If your child needs help to improve his or her composition writing, such detailed feedback is important.  How will our children know which areas to improve in if nobody tells them?  They would just be writing the same thing in the same manner over and over again, with no progress.  Don’t you think so?

The school has two playgrounds – one is a tennis court and the other one is a cricket ground. We also have a nice swimming pool and a canteen. It also has a beautiful garden where students relax and play during recess. Even in games, sports and tournaments, it has made much progress. My school has won many trophies, shields, and medals in many extra-curricular activities. In debates also, the students of my school secure good positions. It is considered to be one of the best schools in my locality.

Our Class teacher greets us daily and asks about us. He is quite a cool and kind man. He entertains us along with teaching his subject. We learn a lot of things like discipline, self-help, confidence, and cooperation here. As I enter my classroom I feel quite happy and relaxed.

My school is a government primary school located on the outskirts of the city. Usually, when people think about a government school, they perceive it to be at an isolated location and have poor basic amenities and teaching facilities. But, despite being a government school, my school defies all such speculations. Teachers of my school are not only knowledgeable about the subjects they teach but also are skilled enough to teach through fun activities. For example, our physics teacher explains every concept by stating real-life examples that we could relate to. This way we not only understand the subject better. Moreover, not a moment I remember, when any teacher had ever replied rudely to any of the students. They always patiently listen and provide answers to all the queries posed to them. Learning at my school is fun and it is made possible only because of the teachers.

My school is very important in my life, in a way even more than my family. My family gives me love, care, and affection, and provides for all my other essential needs. But, all of this isn’t enough to make me a good human being and succeed in life.  Favorably, I am lucky enough to be enrolled in a prestigious school, and gaining a wonderful education, looking forward to realizing my dreams one day. The most necessary for success in life is education, and only my school provides it to me. Without my school and the education that it gives, I would be like a confused and wandering soul, almost aimless in life.

My school helps with my educational and overall personality development. It imparts education through classes, tests, and exams to teach me how to conduct myself confidently. It just feels so great to be in my school and be a part of everyday activities, be it lectures, sports, or Something else. While in school, I always feel happy, confident, enthusiastic, and loved. I make friends at school, those whom I will never forget and will always love them. My family supports my materialistic needs, but school is the place where my actual physical, social, and mental development takes place.  I know that every question that crosses my mind will be answered by my teachers. I also know that my school friends will always be at my side whenever I need them to be. As much as the studies, my school also stresses much on These activities as the management thinks that extracurricular activities are very essential for our overall personality development. My school provides dedicated teachers and staff for each extracurricular activity. We have a big sports ground with kits for all the major sports; a covered auditorium for dance and music and a separate basketball court.

The role my school plays in my personality development is fantastic. It not only imparts education in me but also teaches me how to conduct myself and how to behave decently and properly. I get trained in all the other necessary skills of life, like how to keep calm in challenging situations and help others as well. My school teaches me to be a good and evolved human being, to stay composed and progressive always. It also teaches me to be kind and generous to others and not differentiate them based on their caste, religion, ethnicity, or other divisions. These are some of the most essential personality traits that my school imparts to me, something that I will always be thankful for. Every time I think of my school, I think of it as a temple of education. A temple, where my soul meets education, making my life more meaningful and useful to society and the nation as well. It is a place where my aspirations get a wing and I get the strength and confidence to realize them. No other place in the entire world could replace my school and the role that it plays in my life.
