The prevention of health problems and illness is more important than treatment and medicine. Government funding should reflect this. To what extent do you agree?

Improvements in health, education and trade are essential for the development of poorer nations. However, the governments of richer nations should take more responsibility for helping the poorer nations in such areas. To what extent do you agree?

Undoubtedly governments of developed nations should share the responsibility of helping less fortunate nations. Different measures exist, ranging from market access to direct financial payments or even medical assistance. This essay will explain why certain measures are inherently better than other methods.

Firstly, the most adequate manner to assist the lesser developed countries is not through health or education ‘hand-outs’. This method is flawed and only offers temporary relief from long-term challenges; also this assistance can be cut at any moment, leaving the country stranded.

For example, economical help from the UK to disadvantaged regions in Africa has gradually been reduced since the onset of the financial crisis. Although some parts of the continent may be better educated or in better health, the benefit was short lived, thus leaving the countries of Africa to look for other donors.

Commerce is without doubt the most essential type of assistance that can be given. If the lesser developed country has the opportunity to develop trade, then it will build strong capabilities to serve it for the long term. These strengths can develop the local economy and are more reliable than education or health.

For example, while trading with the richer country the government can search for other foreign markets to trade with. This would offer more stability and diversification for the nation.

To conclude, assistance is definitely necessary for the poorer regions; however, ‘hand-outs’ are short-term solutions. The optimum solution is to offer market access so the region can produce products and generate regular income.

The roots of modern lifestyle diseases can primarily be traced back to two main factors. The main cause is the sedentary nature of contemporary work and recreation, which significantly contributes to these health problems. The prevalence of desk jobs and leisure activities that involve little physical movement, such as watching television and online gaming, have led to widespread physical inactivity. Second, current diets, heavily laden with processed foods, exacerbates these health issues. These foods are typically high in calories but low in nutritional value, leading to increased rates of obesity and diabetes.

IELTS Task 2 Sample Answer- Health and Fitness

In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing.

What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them?

A template is something that can be used over and over again to produce something. Template IELTS answers are normally very bad and I tell people never to use them because they don’t answer the question properly, but there is one exception.

In problem and solution Task 2 answers or causes and solutions Task 2 answers, you will normally use the following 4 paragraph structure :

Problem Solution :

1. Introduction

2. Problems

3. Solutions

4. Conclusion

Causes Solution:

For the third paragraph for both essays we can use a template answer. Let’s look at a sample essay first.

In some nations, people are getting heavier and standards of health and well-being are falling. This essay will suggest that the principal cause of these issues is the type of nourishment they are eating and submit a government education program as a viable solution, followed by a reasoned conclusion.

The main cause of the health crisis currently affecting so many individuals is over-consumption of poor quality sustenance. Convenience food and junk food, such as microwave dinners, chocolate bars, McDonald’s and pizza, have become a ubiquitous part of modern life. Eating too much of these high-fat meals causes many to gain weight and this has knock-on effects on someone’s general wellness. For example, the movie ‘Super Size Me’ demonstrated that a person who eats this kind of food all the time will not only get fat but also suffer from such things as raised blood pressure and even fatty liver disease.

The most practical solution to this problem is a government-sponsored awareness campaign. An effective advertising campaign could warn of the dangers of a poor diet and hopefully, raise awareness amongst the public.  This raised awareness of the problem would lead many people starting a healthier regime. For example, the U.K. recently lobbied their citizens to eat 5 pieces of fruit and vegetables a day and this resulted in a dramatic decrease in obesity-related illnesses such as stroke and heart disease.

In summary, the current health crisis has been caused by an over-reliance on unhealthy food and states should curtail this by educating men and women on how to make healthier choices.

You will notice in the third paragraph I suggest that a government advertising campaign is the best solution. Luckily, for most problems- and I say most because there are always exceptions- a government campaign that educates people about the issue is always a good solution.

We can, therefore, use the following template:

The most practical solution to this problem is a government-sponsored awareness campaign. An effective advertising campaign could warn of the dangers of [X] and hopefully, raise awareness amongst the public.  For example, the U.K. recently lobbied their citizens to [Y] and this resulted in [Z].

All you have to do is think about your particular question and then replace X, Y and Z.

Let’s try this with another question.

Question-  In many countries schools have severe problems with student behaviour.

What do you think are the causes of this?

What solutions can you suggest?

The most practical solution to this problem is a government-sponsored awareness campaign. An effective advertising campaign could warn of the dangers of student misbehaviour and hopefully, raise awareness amongst the public.  For example, the U.K. recently lobbied their citizens to teach their children about the importance of respecting teachers and this resulted in a dramatic improvement.

As you can see, I have used the same template paragraph but changed X, Y and Z to meet the requirements of my particular question.

Some today contend that doctors should be responsible for wide-ranging advice on how their patients can achieve better health. In my opinion, though this is not technically the core job of a doctor, it should nonetheless be considered an essential duty.

Those who argue against this contention point out that doctors have more urgent priorities. Doctors must first of all accurately diagnose patients. This involves asking various questions, performing tests, and a misdiagnosis is a potentially life-altering event in the life of a patient. Once a patient has been diagnosed and the prognosis delivered, doctors must then focus on treatment options. Depending on the severity and the evolution of the illness, the doctor may need to focus intently during this period and possibly seek out a second opinion. If the hypothetical doctor described were also distracted by the mandate to give health advice, there is the small chance that this could hinder their primary duties.

However, these priorities are not always in conflict with the giving of advice that is likely to have more overall impact. Doctors can focus on diagnosis and treatment while also imparting general health advice without allowing these goals to interfere. Moreover, giving advice is more valuable than treatment of disease as it can be a preventative measure. Studies over the last century have repeatedly replicated the finding that prevention of illness through healthy lifestyle choices is the number one driver behind increased longevity and health in the modern world. Although the results of such advice are not as immediately tangible as, for instance, during chemotherapy, they are far more effective in the long-term.

Introduction

• Paraphrase the topic of the essay.
• Give an insight into what can be expected from the essay.
• Paragraph 1- On the one hand, education can stop people from further damaging their health by consuming fast food. From my perspective, although many eat fast food because of its affordability, the root cause of this lies in the fact that they are not adequately educated about the damaging consequences of junk food consumption, and the benefits of healthy eating.
• On the other hand, education alone will not work. The fact is that many people who are aware of the consequences of eating junk food are unduly pessimistic.

Conclude the topic of the essay by making an inference from it.

Fast food has been proven to be the main culprit of obesity and other diet-related diseases, however, the habit of eating an excessive amount of fast food has never lost momentum.  One school of thought holds that education can rectify this situation. However, there is still much scepticism about the effect of education.  In this essay, both of these viewpoints will be analysed.

On the one hand, education can stop people from further damaging their health by consuming fast food. From my perspective, although many eat fast food because of its affordability, the root cause of this lies in the fact that they are not adequately educated about the damaging consequences of junk food consumption, and the benefits of healthy eating. According to recent studies conducted in the neighbourhoods where fast food stores are easily accessible, more than two-quarters of the residents know or care little about what they are consuming and how it can affect their health.

On the other hand, education alone will not work. The fact is that many people who are aware of the consequences of eating junk food are unduly pessimistic. In other words, they are often in denial and convince themselves that unhealthy habits are not as terrible as the media want them to believe. Secondly, it is very difficult for fast food eaters to reduce their dependency on fast food because it contains many addictive artificial flavours.

All things considered, education is one viable solution to put a stop to the obesity epidemic, but it does not suffice.  I feel that more efforts should be made to combat obesity.

In the wake of deteriorating and appalling health conditions of people today, scientists hold unhealthy food as the prime driving force behind it. Some people conjecture that this problem could be contained with proper education, while others don’t believe that could alleviate the issue alone. In this essay, we shall look upon both aspects and how the latter opinion is somehow correct.

The junk food on the platter has been considerably thriving owing to people’s convenience when it comes to having processed food just a doorstep away. A surge in the junk food market and its consumption, as some people say, is due to the oblivion of the generation and society, at large, today. People are ignorant when it comes to the causative, hazardous and catastrophic dynamics of such unhealthy, pernicious and st times, unhygienic food items that may render them frail, severely ill and deficient in the terms of nutrition. Hence, as is proposed by some, the government should take necessary steps in acknowledging and making people aware of such routine and dietary patterns that in the long run, could even be fatal.

However, education and information alone can’t wrap up the wound as people despite knowing the ill effects tend to drag such health sermons at the back seat and hence go by the sporadic sensation of taste. Technology and the modern digital era is most certainly the first and primary cause of it, as now the favourite food is just a “Click & Buy ” away. Not just that, with the upsurge of the digital epoch, the very idea and reflection of it of making the lives easier has indeed, made the lifestyle unhealthier than ever. Sedentary lifestyle, dormant state, frozen feet and barren body are just some of the deleterious physical effects of it, without even getting to the other aspects of it. With a wide plethora of options and alternatives which comes along with the new age, people choose the best ones. Now in order to keep up with the ever-growing demand and neck-jolting strife, the inculcation of the tastier and hazardous sweet poisons to the food material grows. The more people get away with the gustatory aspect of it, the worse they do with their physiologies. In such a case, education alone can’t tackle the demon of junk food, rather limiting and monitoring the advertisements or even precautions while advertising it should be acknowledged. Increasing the taxes on junk foods could yet again be a great alternative as money matters. 

With this we can safely conclude that other than education alone there are some different prophylactic measures that could be taken to halt and digress the fast-moving junk food trend, thereby, saving people from the perils of derelict health.

Band 5+: The graphs below show the Expenditure on Health & Education, UAE as percentages of GDP and Infant mortality and life expectancy.

The given bar chart presents an information about expenses on health and education in UAE as % of GDP in the years 1985, 1990, and 1993. Whereas the line graph illustrates an infant mortality and life expectancy from 1970 to 1992.

Looking from an overall perspective, in the graph, in 1993 the education had the highest trend, however, the health expenditure in 1990 had the lowest trend in UAE. In the chart, in the beginning, infant mortality rate was higher than life expectancy. Nevertheless, in 1992 the trend changed and life expectancy increased.

Considering the bar chart, in 1985 the education spendings and in 1993 the health expenditure was the same 10.00% of GDP. Moreover, in 1990, health expenses was almost the same as in 1993 around 14.00%. Moving to the line graph, in the year 1970 the number of infant mortality was 70, while the number of life expectancy was 60. Over the course of 22 years, the infant mortality significantly decreased to 20, therefore life expectancy slightly rose to 70.

C.  The second half of the twentieth century saw new subway systems constructed in cities around the world. Many Korean cities have modern subway systems, the largest one in the capital city of Seoul, with 287 kilometers of track. [ Crack IELTS with Rob ] The first subway in Brazil opened in the city of Sao Paulo in 1974. Since then subways have been built in a number of other Brazilian cities, including Rio de Janeiro and the capital, Brasilia. Washington, DC, began running the Washington Metro in 1976. Hong Kong opened its subway in 1979. This system includes four lines that run under Victoria Harbour. In 2000, a 17-mile long subway system was completed in Los Angeles, a city infamous for its traffic problems and resulting smog. Construction of this system took fourteen years to complete.

F.    A new feature now often included in the construction of new subway stations is Platform Screen Door (PSD). The Singapore subway was the first to be built with the inclusion of PSDs. The original purpose was to reduce high air-conditioning costs in underground stations. [ Crack IELTS with Rob ] Since then, there has been more and more focus on the safety aspects of this device, as it can prevent people from accidentally falling or being pushed onto the track. PSDs also keep the station platforms quieter and cleaner and allow trains to enter stations at higher rates of speed. The subway system in Hong Kong was the first to have PSDs added to an already existing system. They are becoming more common in subway systems around the world. Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok, London, and Copenhagen are just some of the cities that have PSDs in at least some of their subway stations. PSDs are also often used with other forms of transportation, such as monorails, light rail systems, and airport transportation systems.
