IELTS Essay On Hobbies: IELTS Writing Task 2 Hobbies Essay Samples

ielts hobbies

‘Hobbies’ is one of the most common themes in the IELTS Writing Task 2 as well as in the Speaking section of this English language proficiency test. This is a seemingly easy topic and does not pose many difficulties for students taking the exam.

Table of Content

The kind of questions that you can primarily expect for the hobbies theme in the IELTS essay writing task should be opinion-based questions. These questions will first give you a statement and then ask you to give your opinion on it with the help of supporting examples for each reason or opinion you give.

IELTS Essay On Hobbies: IELTS Writing Task 2 Hobbies Essay Samples

How to Write a High Band IELTS Essay on Hobbies

To score an excellent band in the hobbies essay IELTS poses, follow the below-mentioned tips:

  • Inculcate strong vocabulary, and make sure your sentences are perfectly structured.
  • Provide good examples for each reason or supporting argument that you present. Whenever possible, follow this pattern: topic sentence for paragraph giving a good idea about the reason you are stating, followed by a brief explanation, then an example, and finally wrapping it up with a concluding sentence.
  • Manage your time well so that you have some spare time in the end to proofread your essay and correct any mistakes.

What sets apart a high band essay from a relatively low scoring essay is the overall structure of the essay, how you have linked one paragraph with the other, your vocabulary and grammar, and the quality of examples you have provided. So, make sure to work on each aspect before sitting for the final exam.

Sample Answers

Here are two sample answers that will guide you on getting a high band score in the hobbies theme essay for IELTS Writing Task 2.

Question: Few people devote time to hobbies these days. Why do you think this is the case, and what effect does this have on an individual and society in general? You should spend around 40 minutes on this task and write at least 250 words in the essay.

Answer: Nowadays, there are only a handful of people who pursue a hobby with due diligence. In my opinion, this is not a positive development and can have many disadvantages for the individual and society in general. Leisure activities can be the much-needed relief from the bursts of high-level energy to cope with today’s highly competitive world. They not only keep you fit and healthy but also contribute towards society’s development. The paucity of time and introduction of alternative means of spending one’s free time are the top two causes for the declining number of people engaging in hobbies today. Demanding jobs and a tough education system make it harder for people to take time out and engage in recreational activities like gardening, dancing, yoga, etc. Additionally, with the new streaming platforms, social media applications, and online gaming communities, people often find themselves on the internet in their spare time rather than stepping out for some simple hobbies. The surge in demand for data and the rising number of online users serve as testament to this statement. With the absence of physical activities comes direct and latent consequences like deteriorating physical health leading to issues like obesity and declining mental health as a result of feeling alienated from society. The individual and the society suffer on account of these effects on physical health, mental health, and community building. For instance, as people increasingly choose the company of their smartphones over their friends and other members of society, they feel increasingly alone and start getting out of shape, as observed by some social scientists at the University of Los Angeles. To conclude, not interacting with others while engaging in hobbies has had a rather negative impact on individuals and society consequently. People should thus be encouraged to step out more and participate in various hobbies within their community to ensure they are in good health and instill in them a strong sense of belonging for the society.

Question: Some people are of the view that hobbies need to be difficult for people to be able to enjoy them well. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above statement? Write your answer with a minimum of 250 words and give relevant examples.

Answer: While some hobbies are fairly easy to pursue, others are more difficult to perform and pose a challenge for the individual. However, in my view, it is wrong to establish a correlation between the level of difficulty in performing a leisure activity and the enjoyment (or the recreation value) derived from that hobby. Some people truly find pleasure in easy hobbies like swimming. Such activities do not require a very high level of expertise to perform them and can be completed without putting a lot of strain on their physical health. However, that does not mean that swimmers do not like the activity as much. Another example of such hobbies can be people who like to go bird-watching. This is not a difficult hobby per se, but it still serves the purpose of recreation for the individual partaking in it. In contrast, sometimes, more challenging and difficult hobbies can be thrilling. These hobbies can be more rewarding and more satisfying in the end because the person goes through more challenges to reach the endpoint. For instance, video editing and filmmaking are two rather challenging hobbies that can be very rewarding for some people and, thus, more enjoyable. Therefore, in conclusion, I believe that both kinds of hobbies, easy and difficult, can be pleasurable for an individual depending on their preferences. Hence, it is wrong to state that one type of hobby is more enjoyable than the other simply because it is more challenging. The hobbies essay IELTS often presents can be very easy to tackle and should be written in coherence with the statement given and the question asked. However, to score a good band, you should follow a well-structured format like the ones given above in the sample answers.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Structure Breakdown

Band 7 Sample Answer

Introduction:.

People’s leisure activities are often influenced by fads and trends rather than their genuine interests. However, I agree that trends and fashions can influence popular hobbies and interests, and I also believe that some hobbies are enduring and reflect people’s true preferences. This essay will explore the influence of trends on hobbies, the impact of changing lifestyles, and the importance of distinguishing between passing fads and lasting interests.

Body Paragraph 1:

One reason why trends influence hobbies is because people are constantly exposed to new information and stimuli through media and social platforms. The fear of missing out (FOMO) often leads people to try new hobbies that they see online. A good example of this is the surge in popularity of photography and blogging due to social media. Many people feel pressured to do these activities so that they can present themselves as interesting and engaged online.

Body Paragraph 2:

Furthermore, people’s changing priorities and lifestyles can influence how their hobbies evolve over time. For example, young people may be drawn to active hobbies like sports and outdoor activities, while adults with more responsibilities may prefer more sedentary hobbies like reading or playing video games. However, it is important to distinguish between fleeting trends and enduring hobbies that people truly enjoy. Thinking about my own life, my hobbies have changed over time. When I was younger, I liked sports and outdoor activities. But as I got older, I became more interested in music, art, and writing. I think these activities are a better reflection of who I am and what I enjoy.

Conclusion:

To sum up, while popular hobbies can be influenced by trends, it is important to tell the difference between passing fads and lasting interests that truly align with your own desires. Finding hobbies that are meaningful to you will make your leisure time more fulfilling and authentic.

Band 8 Sample Answer

It is accurate that people’s hobbies and interests shift along with current fads and trends, often driven by a desire for popularity rather than personal enjoyment. While I agree with this perspective to some degree, there are individuals who adopt new hobbies because they genuinely find joy in the activity.

On one hand, many people embrace popular activities to showcase their awareness of current trends, even if their motivation is lacking. For example, in Indonesia, mountain biking has gained popularity, with some participating for the genuine enjoyment of the activity, while others do it merely to signal their alignment with the latest trends and showcase the most recent bicycle model.

On the other hand, there are individuals who genuinely change their interests because they derive pleasure from these new activities. While these pastimes might be the latest craze, these individuals consistently switch their interests due to their strong enthusiasm for these pursuits. Additionally, some of these hobbies may be entirely new inventions, adding to the diversity of interests.

In conclusion, it is undeniable that people’s hobbies and interests can undergo changes. However, I believe that the choice of hobbies is, to a large extent, a matter of personal preference. Instead of blindly following what is fashionable, we should prioritize activities that genuinely bring us joy.

Band 8 Vocabulary

Meaning: Vary irregularly; change.

Example: People’s hobbies often fluctuate with the shifting trends in society.

  • Assertions:

Meaning: Positive statements or declarations, often in agreement with a particular viewpoint.

Example: I agree with the assertions that people adopt hobbies for popularity rather than personal enjoyment.

  • Enthusiasm :

Meaning: Intense and eager enjoyment or interest.

Example: Despite changing trends, some individuals consistently switch hobbies due to their strong enthusiasm for various pursuits.

Meaning: Agreement or cooperation with someone or something.

Example: Some people engage in activities to showcase their alignment with current trends.

Meaning: A sudden and widespread enthusiasm for something.

Example: Mountain biking has become the latest craze in Indonesia.

Meaning: Indicate or communicate something.

Example: Some individuals participate in activities to signal their awareness of the most recent trends.

Meaning: The state of being diverse; variety.

Example: The diversity of interests is evident in the wide range of hobbies people pursue.

  • Prioritize:

Meaning: Arrange or deal with in order of importance.

Example: Instead of blindly following trends, we should prioritize activities that bring us genuine joy.

Meaning: Truly what something is said to be; authentic.

Example: Some individuals adopt new hobbies because they genuinely find joy in the activity.

Meaning: The act of following or striving for a particular goal, aim, or activity.

Example: His lifelong pursuit of knowledge led him to explore various fields of study and acquire a diverse set of skills.

The popularity of hobbies and interests changes over time, seemingly influenced by trends rather than reflecting individuals’ genuine desires. I believe that personal preferences play a larger role than societal trends in shaping people’s leisure choices. In the following essay, I will explore this dynamic interaction between trends and individual desires.

Some people believe that hobbies are mostly influenced by external factors, such as popular trends. For example, the recent increase in popularity of fitness activities is due to society’s focus on health and wellness. However, it is important to remember that these trends often emerge from people’s changing needs and wants. The rise of fitness activities may also be a collective response to growing awareness of health issues, showing that people genuinely want to live healthier lives.

However, on the other hand, hobbies can also be a true reflection of people’s inner interests and preferences. Think about how popular classic hobbies like reading and painting have been for generations. These activities are still popular today, which suggests that they have a timeless appeal that goes beyond passing trends. Additionally, people may use hobbies as a way to express themselves by choosing activities that align with their values and personal interests. For example, someone who is passionate about environmental conservation might choose to spend their free time doing outdoor activities, not just because they are trendy, but because they align with their values.

In conclusion, popular hobbies may be influenced by trends and fashions to some extent, but they also reflect people’s true interests and goals. The relationship between societal influences and personal choices is complex and ever-changing. Therefore, we need to consider both external trends and people’s intrinsic desires to get a complete understanding of what shapes their leisure activities.

Meaning: The capacity or power to produce effects on the actions, behavior, or opinions of others.

  • Societal Trends:

Meaning: General direction in which society is moving, reflecting collective preferences and attitudes.

Example: The rise of eco-friendly products is a societal trend driven by environmental awareness.

Meaning: Characterized by constant change, activity, or progress.

Example: The business environment is dynamic, constantly changing and evolving.

  • Collective:

Meaning: Done by people acting as a group.

Candidate’s Response:

It is undeniable that recreational activities are on a continuous change. While I accept that social trends play a key role in people’s favourite leisure activities, I believe that we ultimately choose the entertainments that is to our tastes.

Due to technological development, the number of entertaining activities is continuously increasing, and this undoubtedly affects popular hobbies in all human societies over time. Cheap international flights, for instance, have made overseas travel possible for millions of people, and consequently, International trip has become a global trend. Today, many people prefer to travel abroad rather than take a domestic trip, while some of them do not even notice the reason that they travel for. This group of people often decide to travel abroad because they are unconsciously affected by hundreds of advertisements of traveling companies that they watch every day. A personal example of this would be when I traveled to Dubai in 2017, and at the end of my trip I realized that Dubai was not even close to the city that I had seen in the advertisements.

Alongside all new entertainments, there are countless old yet popular hobbies, such as going to the beach or gardening. As far as I am concerned, no matter whether you are elderly or young, adult or adolescent, you would definitely enjoy surfing, paddle boarding or only lying on the warm sands of the beach, while sunshine caresses your skin and a cool breeze strokes your cheeks. The same is true if we look at gardening. Gardening has always been amongst the most favourite hobbies for elderly members of almost every modern human societies. These all-time popular hobbies show us that we are free to choose what we really want to do in our spare time, regardless of the abundance of newly-invented hobbies.

In conclusion, I believe that while social trends have a profound impact on people’s interests towards entertainment, we finally opt to do the kinds of hobbies that we really enjoy.

Ielts exam preparation for a higher band score., ielts essay – for students keeping a hobby is beneficial.

IELTS sample Essay

IELTS Essay Topic:  For students keeping a hobby is beneficial or they should just focus on their studies.

(My opinion: Keeping a hobby is important for studetns.)

Points: 1. Relax to increase efficacy in studies. 2. It develops creativity within them which may open other career options.

Sample Answer: Hobbies are vital ingredients in the overall development of a child. Has it be a child or an adult importance of leisure time activity is prominent. There are arguments as to whether children should indulge in a pastime activity or not. Apropos of the argument, I believe that hobbies are indispensable elements of a child’s life, on account of its ability to not only relax the students after hard work in studies, but also due to its significance in inculcating creativity among the adolescents.

To begin with, pastime practices are vital for releasing the stress level among the students. Nowadays, education has been extremely demanding, owing to the competition among the scholars. Hence, it is mandatory for students to indulge in stress busting activities to impart the necessary relaxation of body and soul that will increase the efficiency of the child. For an instance, as per a report from an education society of India, 20% of the students in India have a serious hobby and they are found to be 80% more efficient to that of pupils with no hobbies. Hence, hobby is a crucial ingredient in the overall efficacy of a child.

In addition, due to inclusion of extracurricular activities, various children get an opportunity to transform these activities in serious career options. For an example, as per the same report mentioned as above, 30% of the students are considering the hobby as a career option due to passion involved with the hobby. Likewise, involvement in the leisure time activities germinates the creativity among the children, which is most prominent feature of overall growth of an adult nowadays.

To sum up, hobbies are a crucial element for the mental relaxation and foster the creativity among the students. Moreover, due to opening another option as a career opportunity, it is justifiable to develop a hobby.
