King's College London was founded in 1828-9 by a group of eminent politicians, churchmen and others. They wanted a Church of England alternative to what later became University College London (UCL, founded in 1826), known as 'the godless college in Gower Street'. King's was granted a royal charter by King George IV on 14 August 1829.

King’s offers world-class teaching across a variety of subjects and is ranked in the Top 10 for Business & Management Studies, Food Science, French, History, Law, Philosophy and Physiotherapy by The Complete University Guide.

King’s is particularly distinguished in a wide range of health areas including psychiatry, medicine, nursing and dentistry and works with teaching hospitals and comprehensive mental health services to give students a thorough education experience.

King’s world-leading research has enabled groundbreaking discoveries and advances which continue to shape modern live. We have 12 Nobel Prize winners amongst our alumni and former staff and are the largest provider of professional healthcare training in Europe, with five Medical Research Council centres.

Studying at King’s gives students access to essential technology and equipment to facilitate and enhance research conducted by King’s scientists and external researchers.

King’s students benefit from a variety of local and global connections with employers, universities and organisations. We host guest speakers, have multiple careers fairs and provide opportunities for internships and active recruitment. 94 per cent of master’s graduates are in full time work within six months of graduation and we are ranked in the UK’s top 5 universities for graduate employability.

Each faculty at King's is supported by a Careers Consultant who focuses on employment within that area and can offer targeted support throughout your time at King’s and for up to two years after graduation.

Students can book one-on-one appointments with a Careers Consultant to discuss possible career options.

The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London and the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) are working in partnership to create the Pears Maudsley Centre (PMC), dedicated to children and young people’s mental health, sitting at the heart of the King’s/SLaM Denmark Hill campus. The PMC is a £90M state-of-the-art hub for mental health research focused on children, adolescents, young adults and their families. The PMC is the home for the King’s Maudsley Partnership for Children and  Young People, an enterprise bringing together scientists and clinicians to address  children and young people’s mental health. The Partnership will deliver rapid, relevant findings on the causes of mental health problems; determining which children are most at risk of developing mental ill health and developing effective strategies on how to prevent mental health problems, and how to stop them from getting worse once they appear. It will build the evidence-base for developing personalised multi-modal treatments with avenues for scalability. It will co-locate researchers and clinicians and provide cutting-edge, child-friendly research facilities alongside those for clinical care. The PMC is the only facility in Europe whose primary focus is on mental disorders and neurodevelopmental conditions affecting CYP.

The Centre for Developmental Neurobiology (CDN) is an academic department of the School of Neuroscience at the IoPPN. Researchers at the CDN investigate the mechanisms governing the formation of the brain, both during embryonic development and in our early postnatal life, when early experience continues to shape the way our brain is constructed. The 'ground plan' of the brain is genetically determined, but it is highly influenced by environmental experience. Such is the complexity of the brain's construction, however, that we are still far from a complete understanding of its basic processes, such as those that are in common across different species, let alone those that are uniquely human. Understanding brain development will not only inform about individual variability — why are we different from each other — but also about the origin of pathological behaviours such as those found in individuals with mental disorders

About the role

We are seeking to appoint at the professorial level, a world-leading researcher investigating the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying developmental trajectories in humans to form a bridge between our established excellence in developmental neurobiology and child psychiatry. The holder will have world-leading expertise in understanding processes underlying variability in human brain development, with a record of developmental research involving babies and toddlers. The post holder will have experience and expertise in the use of behavioural, electrophysiological, and psychophysiological approaches (including experience using virtual reality scenarios in experimental research and an interest and/or experience in hyper-scanning methods).

The post will link the Centre for Developmental Neurobiology based on the Guy’s Campus and the newly built Pears Maudsley Centre for Child and Young People’s Mental Health based at Denmark Hill, where extensive new clinical research facility for children is being established.

This is a 0.8 FTE part time post (28 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

1.      PhD qualified in relevant subject area.

2.      Detailed knowledge of technologies required to assay human brain development and experience using virtual reality scenarios in experimental research.

3.      An established track record of grant funding, academic leadership and collaboration.

4.      Teaching and mentoring at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

5.      Presenting scientific research in the form of papers, posters and oral presentations.

6.      Expertise in understanding processes underlying variability in human brain development, with a record of developmental research involving babies and toddlers.

Desirable criteria

1.      Leadership role within a major international collaborative entity.

2.      Experience in working with industrial partner.

3.      Experience of clinical and/or industrial collaboration.

4.      Working as part of a multidisciplinary team and supporting others effectively.
