Tips for English Language Creative Writing?
Having done various practice papers, I am still finding it difficult to get 33+/40 marks on section B (AQA English Language Paper 1). My main issues involve making a sudden plot twist or action that takes the reader by surprise, and actually forming paragraphs that utilise ambitious language in a controlled and understandable manner. I have watched various videos (e.g. Mr Bruff) and these have helped but I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to achieve a higher band of marks.

For this you will have a choice of two questions to test your narrative (story telling) skills and/or descriptive writing skills.
EG: one question might be based on a picture which will act as a stimulus and the question will ask you to describe it, the other question will be a narrative question which will ask you to write part of a story linked to a theme which relates to the picture.
The questions may both be descriptive, both narrative or one of each. So you need to know the difference and similarities between these two writing styles. Check out these videos for clarification.

This resource is for a lesson focusing on the writing question (Q5) of paper 1 and looks at how to write the opening of a story.
Starter: Create a character (this ties into the creative writing activity later) Objectives: To understand what to expect for the writing question and practice writing the opening of a story. Students will also set a personal target for the lesson. Video: YouTube clip of Mr. Bruff discussing how to write the opening of a story. Criteria: Understanding the mark scheme (it is simplified with questions to test understanding). Language: Introducing the acronym ARRESTED and practice using language features to describe an image (descriptive writing). Example: Paragraph summary of how the opening of a story might be structured. This is to give students an example of how to build a story and focus on the quality of their writing and not introducing lots of events. Creative Writing Task: Write a story where their character is sitting in a coffee shop and they are approached by someone. They can use the character they created earlier and the language features they wrote for the ARRESTED exercise. Plenary: Reflection on whether the students reached their targets during the lesson.

It really does have a lot to do with plot, as writing about something mature and thoughtful makes your writing inherently more mature and thoughtful. Obviously, if your style is not developed, two days are not enough to change it but at least with a good plot you give yourself chance of a better grade. 2. Reply.
Section B is the writing section of the exam, requiring you to write two long answers. You are recommended to spend around 25 minutes on question 5 and 35 minutes on question 6. Around 1/3 of the marks available in this section are awarded for spelling, punctuation and grammar, so it is not just about what you write but how you write it.
