When I was in nursing school, I quickly realized that my tried-and-true method of using my Apple calendar and a monthly printed planner was just not going to work. The schedule is just too jam-packed! When I transitioned to using a full-sized (8.5×11) planner, I immediately felt more organized and was able to keep all my tasks and priorities on track.
Why use a paper planner, you ask? Why not just use your smart phone? For some people, a digital planner can work well, but if you’re on the fence or struggling with managing your schedule, here are some ways a paper planner can help! And if you’re curious how I use a paper planner for time management, check out this post here .
- It’s super easy to pull out and jot down a quick list. Maybe this is the old person in me, but I just don’t like typing on my phone. I’d much rather jot down a quick note, rather than pull out my phone every single time I need to write something down.
- In addition to helping you plan your schedule, a paper planner has a lot of space to keep lists, jot down notes, and even track things like your steps or how much water you drink. Rather than using an app for your schedule, an app for your lists, and an app to track habits, you can do all of this in one place when you use a paper planner.
- It’s easy to see your whole month at a glance. With nursing school, you often have to plan pretty far in advance to ensure you get all your projects done while studying for exams. Knowing what your whole month looks like helps you prioritize your time so you’re not left scrambling at the last minute.
- If you’ve followed the organization system outlined in my book (#ad), then you’ve got your Master List all ready to go. Wouldn’t it be great if you had a convenient place to carry it around? I always carried mine in my planner and it made it really easy to plan my weeks because I could easily see what was coming up.
- A planner with a weekly schedule allows you to schedule out blocks of time to attend class, review your notes, study for exams, or work on projects. When you block out your time, you truly can see what it takes to get everything done.
Paper planners that are great for nursing school
As a planner addict, I’ve tried many planners and have decided that my absolute favorites for nursing school are:
- The Passion Planner – This planner is absolutely fantastic for nursing school. It has both monthly and weekly spreads, and I especially love that the days of the week are broken down into half hour segments. The only tiny drawback for me with this planner is that it doesn’t have a dedicated space for a daily to-do list. It does, however have space for a to-do list spanning each week. And if that works for you, then you definitely should give this planner a try. The medium size would probably be big enough for your busy schedule, but they also have an 8.5 x 11 version, too! Find your Passion Planner here.
- The Uncalendar – This is actually the planner I used in nursing school and I absolutely loved how functional it is. I used the full-size version and have never felt more organized in my life. One of hte great things about the Uncalendar is that it’s so customizable. For starters, it’s undated, so you can start using it anytime. And, each weekly spread has multiple space for lists and notes that you can use however you like. Check out the Uncalendar here.
- Hobonichi Cousin – This is the planner I currently use to run Straight A Nursing while also managing my life, my work schedule, and my teaching commitments. This planner is unique in that it has monthly, weekly, and daily pages. Plus, it is made of a very distinct (and thin) paper that I absolutely love, so it doesn’t get too bulky even with all those pages. The monthly pages are great for big-picture things, the weekly is where you could plan out your schedule, and then you could use the daily pages for specifics about an assignment or for making lists or jotting down reminders. You can grab your Hobonichi Cousin here!

Buying Guide for the Best Planners for Nursing Students
There are quite a few factors to keep in mind when choosing a nursing day planner. The right planner for you depends mostly on your organizational style. While all students need their planner to fill the same basic needs, the format can vary.
A planner needs to accomplish the following things:
- Keeping your daily schedule organized, so you know how to manage your time each day
- Allowing you to track your upcoming due dates, tests, and projects
- Helping you set goals and feel accomplished when you complete tasks
- Organizing your class materials, so it’s easier to take notes and study
We’ll take a look at how different planners are structured, along with some alternative potential options for organizing your things.
Digital or Printed Nursing School Planner
One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether to buy a digital or printed planner. Digital planners typically use phone or tablet apps (such as GoodNotes or Notability), while printed planners are bound more traditionally with paper. Our 2023-2024 school year nursing school planner works seamlessly on GoodNotes or Notability, depending on whether you have an Android or Apple device.
The right one for you will vary. There are distinct advantages and disadvantages to both. In fact, the academic community hotly debates whether digital or printed planners are better.
Advantages of Digital Nursing School Planners
Digital planners have become more and more popular in today’s smartphone age. In the past, it was difficult to keep your notes and schedule online, since doing so required computer access. But today, digital planning apps allow you to access your information wherever you have your phone and a 3G connection.
A digital planner is also more convenient and portable. You can store a lot more information without taking up any extra room in your backpack. With a digital planner, you can keep hundreds of pages of notes, dozens of to-do lists, daily schedules, weekly plans, and longer project plans, and you won’t have to worry about running out of space.
Some students may also find digital planners helpful because of their interactive tools. Oftentimes you can set up alerts about impending due dates or reminders to study at a certain time. The interactive level makes the apps a coveted time management tool.
Advantages of Printed Nursing School Planners
There are reasons that printed planners aren’t obsolete, even with the advent of such convenient smartphone technology. In addition to being the preferred method of organization for many students, they also confer some scientific benefits.
Paper planners allow for a stronger level of focus. If you find yourself desensitized to app reminders, a paper planner is a better way of tracking your due dates. It forces your brain to engage and acknowledge the information, rather than swiping it away for later.
In the same vein, taking notes by hand helps to encode them into your memory much more easily than typing them does . You’re more likely to remember what you’ve written if you note it in your paper planner. People with paper planners also tend to be more concise and self-directed, since there’s limited room to explain what’s important to you.
Paper planners have been shown to lower stress levels by helping people manage their tasks. Even if you have an overwhelming amount of work to do, you can use a paper planner to prioritize. With a digital app, the reminder notifications can quickly become too much to deal with. And many experts recommend using paper to connect to your environment, rather than “zoning out” behind a smartphone screen.
Nursing Planners VS General Academic Planners
Planners like the Extended Planner for Nursing Students by TheHappyPlannerCo are specifically built for nurses. Meanwhile, the Erin Condren Academic Planner is built with all types of students in mind.
Nursing students can use either type of planner to achieve their goals. Academic planners tend to have strong scheduling and organizational tools. They may also come with customizable dividers and notes sheets. You’re more likely to find extra customization tools in generic academic planners, as the goal is for students to personalize the planner to their needs.
For those seeking general academic planners, you can see our list of the 5 Best Goodnotes Planners for 2024 and beyond.
Nursing planners have a focus on the specific demands of nursing school. They understand the core components that nursing students need to learn. It’s common for nursing planners to come with nursing facts, important details about standardized testing, and templates to track core class assignments.
When deciding which type of planner to get, the big question is how much customization you want to do yourself. Would you prefer to have your templates already laid out, or do you want to create your own unique study system?
Binding a PDF Planner Yourself
You can also bind a PDF planner yourself, with some of the costs covered here. You’ll need the PDF pages with the schedule, to-do lists, notes sheets, and any other included items. Once you have the printed sheets, you can get to work.
Creating your own planner is a great choice if you like DIY projects, flexible customization, and money-saving tricks. You can turn the planner into your own art project. Many people also create planners with removable pages, allowing them to replace the information with new schedules every year.
Accessories
Accessories are available for nursing school planners to offer better personalization, organization, and aesthetic appeal.
Nursing planner stickers are a popular option. If your choice of planner doesn’t include any, you can purchase an extra sheet. These funky stickers allow you to add visual organizational cues to your schedule, so you know exactly what you’re seeing at a glance.
You might also invest in writing utensils like colored markers. As long as your planner paper is thick enough, markers and highlighters add beautiful pops of color while making it even easier to organize. Like the stickers, they can serve as important visual cues.
Smart fine line coloring pens make for a great way to jazz up your planner and organizer.
Another helpful accessory is an organizational tool for your writing utensils. You can keep track of your pencils, pens, markers, and highlighters. Since they don’t get lost in your bag, you always have access to your full system of visual color coding.

Nurses Recommend the 10 Best Apps for Nursing Students
The best apps for nursing students help juggle the demands of their busy lives and get ahead in their studies even while on the go. The problem that most students have is cutting through the noise to find the right app that can help streamline their workload.
We talked with three nurses who shared their personal favorite apps for nursing students. These apps can help students learn, retain information, get peer-to-peer support, and more. Dive in to discover the perfect app to help you through your nursing program.
The Best Apps for Nursing Students
1 med mnemonics.
Beth Hawkes, full-time nurse and owner of NurseCode.com, works with nursing students to help them pass their exams and find the right job for them. She loves the Med Mnemonics app for the iPhone to help students retain information.
“Not only does this easy and intuitive interface allow customization, but it also lets users create their own list of mnemonic phrases or acronym sets in order to memorize more easily,” she says.
The app has over 1,900 mnemonics using acronyms, rhymes, and memory tricks to learn topics like anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and surgery. It has a searchable database you can filter by discipline, and you can create a favorites list or add your own.
Cost: $1.99
Mary Buffington, a burnout coach, nurse educator, and nurse entrepreneur, recommends this app for nursing students to stay on top of the latest medical news and expert commentary. The database contains information on all specialties, drugs, and diseases. It also has continuing education activities. Physicians author the disease and condition information and the drug profiles are authored by a doctor of pharmacy.
3 Epocrates
This app has been the gold standard of prescription data for many years. It is now owned by athenahealth and has a close relationship with pharmaceutical companies. The upgrades unlock disease information, treatment, alternative medicines, and laboratory and diagnostic information.
Jenna Liphart Rhoads, Ph.D., is a nurse educator with a clinical background in surgical-trauma adult critical care. Epocrates is one of her favorite apps for nursing students because it acts as a pocket reference guide that is not exclusive to nursing.
“Epocrates has a drug reference library, lab reference section, multiple types of medical calculators, and medical diagnoses section. This app is a great ‘all in one’ resource,” she says.
Cost: Free with two upgrades of $175 or more
Popular Online RN-to-BSN Programs
Learn about start dates, transferring credits, availability of financial aid, and more by contacting the universities below.
4 Nursing Central
Hawkes calls this one of the best apps for nursing students and registered nurses (RNs). The Nurse Central app combines five resources into one easy-to-use interface. Nurses and nursing students can access a database of over 5,000 drugs, a dictionary with over 75,000 entries, interpretations for hundreds of lab and diagnostic tests, and a review of over 250 medical conditions.
Users can create custom notes, see thousands of full-color images, and access the complete PubMed database from the convenience of their cell phones. The paid version includes updates for one year.
Cost: Free preview download with in-app upgrades from $39 to $179
Buffington also suggests the HearMe app, which anonymously connects you with a trained empathetic listener who is available any time of the day or night. Nurse burnout is a challenge for nursing students and nurses who must deal with the stress of a difficult program and challenging work environment.
The emotional wellness app provides peer-to-peer support where nurses can have real-time, text-based conversations with other nurses about their struggles. The average wait time is less than one minute and the average rating is 4.7 out of 5.0.
“Sometimes it’s easier to have real, honest conversations in an anonymous space,” says Buffington. “This platform helps you feel validated.”
Cost: Free download with in-app purchases ranging from $4.99 to $11.99
6 Headspace
The app is designed for people to “be kind to their mind.” Liphart Rhoads finds it is an excellent tool for meditation, stress reduction, and relaxation. The app claims its users find more joy in the day and sleep better at night. There are sample sessions on the site so you can try them before you download or buy the program.
“Headspace can be used before or after work, or even during a quick break at work or clinical, to find peace and mental clarity,” says Liphart Rhoads.
There are programs to teach users breathing exercises, improve self-worth, and guide meditation. There are over 70 million downloads and a star rating of 4.9 out of 5.0.
Cost: First 7-14 days are free; then $69.99 for the year or $12.99 per month
7 Eponyms App
An eponym is a word that originates from the proper name of a person, place, or thing. For example, Addison’s disease is named after Thomas Addison. The app gives you the history behind the names of diseases, fractures, surgical procedures, and more.
The app has not been updated in several years, but the information has not changed. There are 1,800 common and obscure eponyms with full-text search and 26 categories. Hawkes finds it is a good study resource for nursing students.
“It is a boon for nursing students who are already struggling with a large amount of information. It also gives short descriptions and allows easy search by category or popularity,” she says.
8 ECG Guide
Liphart Rhoads believes that understanding and identifying abnormalities on an electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most complex skills a nursing student or RN learns. The app has over 200 examples of common and uncommon ECG readings.
There are reference sections that address an ECG rate, rhythm, P wave, QRS complex, and ST segments, among others. Nurses learn how to identify ischemia, arrhythmias, heart block, and more.
“The app is a great resource for nursing students, new RNs, and experienced nurses who are learning how to read and interpret ECGs,” she says.
Cost: Apple store $.99 and Google Play $3.49
9 Drugs.com
The company supports two mobile apps. The medication guide app gives nurses and nursing students an easy way to look up drug interactions, pill identification, and drug information. The pill identifier app is a searchable database of over 14,000 medication images. The app requires an internet connection to see the images.
Pills are searchable by color, shape, imprint, and drug name. Liphart Rhoads recommends the app for nursing students and RNs to find helpful information for patient care. One of the options she values is the ability to check drug interactions to ensure that medications can be given together.
Cost: Medication Guide — Free; Pill Identifier — $0.99
10 NCLEX-RN Mastery
The app is connected to the study course. Inside the app, nursing students can use a comprehensive mnemonics list, take practice questions, learn terminology, and track progress with detailed statistics. There are several quizzes with explanations.
The company is so sure of the results of the program that they guarantee nursing students will pass the National Council Licensure Examination for RNs (NCLEX-RN) or get double their money back.
Cost: $35.99 per month
