Your comment is total disrespect to PHD holders - Coach Opeele to Kwesi Pratt

Coach Isaac 'Opeele' Boateng

Coach Isaac 'Opeele' Boateng has criticized veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jr. over his remarks about Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. In a GhanaWeb publication, Kwesi Pratt Jr. claimed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer would not have become vice president if the party had spent time analyzing Dr. Bawumia's doctoral thesis. The veteran journalist expressed that after reading the vice president's thesis, he fully understood why Ghana's economy is in a difficult situation. "This president was honest with us. He admitted that he cannot manage the economy and that's why he brought Dr. Bawumia on board, believing he had found the 'wiz kid.' Perhaps if they had read the thesis Dr. Bawumia presented for his doctorate, they might have hesitated in accepting the president's honesty. "I have taken the trouble to read the thesis. When I read it, I had no doubts about why we are in this mess," said Kwesi Pratt Jr. Responding to these comments, Coach Opeele questioned Kwesi Pratt's academic qualifications to critique an economics doctoral thesis. Coach Opeele stressed that the veteran journalist's comments were disrespectful to the NPP presidential candidate and all doctorate holders in the country. "This made me understand why someone would just wake up and say a Dutch passport is better than a PhD. Because, on what academic grounds did Kwesi Pratt understand the economics doctoral thesis? This comment is a total disrespect to PhD holders," Opeele wrote on X. JNA/EK

URI Graduate School of Oceanography’s Melissa Omand to receive funding for Ocean Margins Initiative in Ghana

phd economics in ghana

 June 27, 2024

A team led by the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography , Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the University of Ghana has been selected to initiate a project through the Ocean Biogeochemistry Virtual Institute (OBVI) funded by Schmidt Sciences . The project, known as the Ocean Margins Initiative, is one of five selected projects aimed at addressing gaps in ocean data and modeling efforts by enhancing the breadth of research in the field and expanding capacity to understand ocean resources.

Understanding coastal margins

Coastal margins—the nexus between land and ocean, which encompasses areas such as gulfs—are the ocean’s most biologically productive regions but are difficult to represent in the global models that help us predict climate change. To improve global carbon cycle projections, the Initiative will include developing an observation and modeling system for the Gulf of Guinea. The system will capture how coastal upwelling—the climate-regulating, marine-life-supporting movement of deep ocean water toward the surface—affects the ocean overall.

“With researchers in Ghana and throughout the U.S., we are combining sea-going field work and earth system models to predict the flow of ocean carbon from the West African coast to the open ocean,” says GSO Associate Professor Melissa Omand , lead of the Oceans Margins Initiative. “Our intensive sampling will occur each summer during seasonal nutrient upwelling, and then field work will persist through the year led by the students and staff who receive training at the summer school in Nigeria and Ghana.

Local Impacts

The project will evaluate the impact of local and basin-scale ocean processes on the coastal zone and communities in West Africa. Omand adds, “The Gulf of Guinea is a really interesting place because like many other coastlines, it is highly productive. However, the physical dynamics that bring nutrients to the surface are pretty different. We don’t yet fully understand all the drivers, but we think nutrients are delivered by a combination of deep internal waves that travel across the entire Atlantic basin and interact with local processes.”

The science team is studying how these physical forces combine to enhance phytoplankton blooms, and transport the organic carbon made by the bloom offshore where it may be sequestered in the abyss or recycled near the surface and released back into the atmosphere. Ghanaian fishermen and the public will be engaged throughout the project to ensure the findings are of practical use to local communities.

phd economics in ghana

The Oceans Margin Initiative will also support Coastal Ocean Environment Summer School In Nigeria and Ghana , which attracts approximately 100 students from across Africa annually. Over the years, the school has provided hands-on, experiential learning to smaller student teams, which are trained to use various observational and modeling tools based on their interests. The URI team will be working with students on-site to build affordable, open source tools for observing ocean carbon. The floats – designed in Omand’s lab at the Graduate School of Oceanography  – are made from ocean-degradable plastics that fully break down in seawater if lost or unrecoverable.

With the opportunity for sustained fieldwork and persistent engagement from the science team, many University of Ghana students are expected to complete Master’s and Ph.D. degrees through their involvement with the project.

GSO’s legacy of sustainable work in Ghana

This initiative builds on a legacy of work in Ghana from GSO and its affiliates. In 2014, USAID awarded the URI Coastal Resources Center a five-year cooperative agreement to lead the Sustainable Fisheries Management Project to rebuild marine fisheries stocks and catches through the adoption of responsible fishing practices. In response to COVID-19, the project was extended through 2021 to implement activities that prevented the spread of the virus and mitigated its economic effects on vulnerable households in fishing communities in Ghana.

Collaborative Global Efforts

Omand’s research with the Ocean Margins Initiative will contribute to a global research network that addresses critical questions about ocean carbon sequestration and the resilience of marine ecosystems. The teams from the five selected projects will collaborate to provide clarity on how much carbon dioxide the ocean can hold and how marine ecosystems can withstand a rapidly warming world. OBVI has committed $45 million to fund the research over the next five years, with additional support from Schmidt Sciences and access to the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor (too) .

“Climate research is one of Schmidt Sciences’ priority areas, and we are pleased to launch OBVI as part of a series of globally connected climate programs focused on advancing fundamental science to understand the implications of climate change and mitigation strategies,” says Stu Feldman, president of Schmidt Sciences. “OBVI will address fundamental questions about specific mechanisms and regional processes. More broadly, it will fill a need in the ocean sciences for model refinement and integration looking across systems, scales, and habitats.”

UN Women's mandate on the care economy

The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) is the UN agency mandated to accelerate progress on gender equality and address the needs of women worldwide. UN Women supports Member States in setting and implementing global standards for achieving gender equality and coordinates gender-related work within the United Nations. UN Women's Strategic Plan focuses on four thematic outcomes: promoting women's leadership; women's economic empowerment; women's engagement in peace, security and humanitarian action; and ending violence against women and girls. In parallel with these four thematic results, to address the root causes of gender inequality, UN Women, in collaboration with other actors, contributes to seven systemic results, including: strengthening global normative frameworks and gender-responsive laws, policies and institutions; financing the promotion of gender equality; women's equitable access to services, goods and resources; and the production, analysis and use of gender statistics, sex-disaggregated data and knowledge.

In the area of women's economic empowerment, UN Women works to promote the economic advancement of women so that they enjoy income security, decent work and economic autonomy. In particular, UN Women partners with a wide range of stakeholders, including governments, the United Nations system, civil society, women's and youth organizations and the private sector in : promoting  (i) women's access to jobs and finance in the green and blue economy; (ii) women's entrepreneurship and public procurement opportunities for women-led businesses; (iii) improving women's income security and social protection and (iv) formulating and implementing gender-responsiveeconomic policies.

The new Women’s Economic Empowerment Strategy launched in 2024 articulates UN Women’s vision for enabling women’s economic agency, autonomy and well-being. Anchored in UN Women’s Strategic Plan 2022–2025 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, its objective is to provide a framework that galvanizes internal and external stakeholders to work together at the local, national and global level through transformative solutions that improve the lives of women and girls with no one left behind. It identifies three key priority areas, or Gender Equality Accelerators (GEAs), where UN Women can make the most progress: (i) women and the world of work, (ii) gender-responsive climate action and (iii) transforming care systems.

UN Women’s work on the Care Economy in West and Central Africa

According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), by 2030, an estimated 2.3 billion people will require care, including children, individuals with disabilities, and the elderly. In Sub-Sahara Africa, women spend on average 3.5 times more on unpaid care and domestic work per day than men. Unpaid care work is essential for vibrant and sustainable economies and societies. However, in West and Central Africa (WCA), the unequal distribution of unpaid care work where limited infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, and rigid social norms, aggravates inequalities between men and women in time spent conducting care work.

Unpaid care work limits participation in the workforce, especially for mothers. Around the world, 606 million women of working age have stated they cannot hold employment due to unpaid care work, while only 41 million men are inactive for the same reason. When we compare the employment-to-population ratio of mothers to fathers of children (aged 0–5) on the African continent, we see that 59.4 percent of women are employed, versus 81.3 percent of men. The time spent by women on domestic and care tasks is one of the most important constraints they face in running their businesses or advancing in their professional careers as employees, thereby holding back their economic empowerment.

Convinced that women's economic empowerment ultimately depends on the amount of unpaid care work borne by women, UN Women catalyzes efforts to recognize, reduce and redistribute unpaid care work to address structural barriers to women's full and equal participation in the economy. To this end, UN Women identifies strategic entry points for policies and programs, as well as the tools needed to transform the care economy to promote women's economic empowerment and gender equality.

To help inform policymaking to address the issue of unpaid care work and the care economy in general, the UN Women West and Central Africa Regional Office is launching the first-ever Care Factsheets .

The Care Factsheets are the most comprehensive assessment of the state of women’s unpaid care work and the care economy in selected WCA countries. It will provide an overview of the various policies implemented by governments to recognize, reduce, and redistribute it (reforms, service, infrastructure, investments...), make the business, economic, and social case for investing in the care economy, and offer action-oriented recommendations for policymakers, researchers, civil society and other stakeholders.

The Care Factsheets will guide UN Women and its partners in assisting policymakers in developing high-quality, sustainable care policies, services, and innovative solutions to maximize efforts to boost women’s economic empowerment and foster inclusive growth.

Quick View: Ghana’s Q1 2024 Economic Growth Surprise Points To Building Momentum

Country Risk / Ghana / Wed 19 Jun, 2024

Stacks of Ghanaian currency.

Latest Development: On June 18, Ghana Statistical Service published Q1 2024 data, showing that real economic growth accelerated to 4.7% y-o-y—from 3.8% in Q4 2023—marking the fastest expansion in over two years ( see chart below, left ). The acceleration was primarily driven by solid growth of 6.8% in the industrial sector ( see chart below, right ), buoyed by increased output in mining & quarrying and oil & gas operations. From an expenditure perspective, economic growth was primarily driven by a 13.8% expansion in fixed investment and healthy growth of 11.2% in private consumption.

Forecast Implications: The acceleration in economic growth was against our and consensus expectations that the economy would slow in Q1. As such, we have revised up our full-year 2024 real GDP forecast to 4.3%, from 3.8% previously. In 2025, we forecast the Ghanaian economy to expand by 4.5%.

Analysis: We believe that economic growth over the coming quarters will remain markedly stronger compared to the last two years. While inflation remained sticky in Q1 2024, averaging 24.2%, we expect that it will trend downward and reach 19.5% by the end of the year, primarily facilitated by statistical base effects. Slowing inflation, combined with stronger government spending ahead of the December general elections, will support consumer activity and boost domestic demand. Meanwhile, we expect that fixed investment will continue to recover. While interest rates remain elevated as a result of the Bank of Ghana’s 2021-2023 hiking cycle (the central bank hiked by a cumulative 1,550 basis points since mid-2021), we expect that an improvement in business confidence will result in stronger corporate investment.

That said, weaker net exports will cap economic growth and prevent it from returning to the 2015-2019 average of 5.3%. While a marked recovery in crude oil production of 11.0% should support export growth, this will be largely offset by a sharp fall in cocoa production—and thus exports—as a result of adverse meteorological conditions. Furthermore, we expect a solid recovery in imports due to growing domestic demand for foreign goods and services, which will weigh on net exports.
