NASA Funds Research Projects Advancing STEM Career Development

NASA logo

JPL is supporting seven projects in the MOSAICS program, which helps build relationships between college faculty and NASA researchers while providing mentorship for students.

NASA has awarded $6 million to 20 teams from emerging research institutions across the United States supporting projects that offer career development opportunities for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students.

This is the third round of seed funding awarded through the agency’s MOSAICS (Mentoring and Opportunities in STEM with Academic Institutions for Community Success) program, formerly the Science Mission Directorate Bridge Program. The program seeks to expand access to NASA research opportunities in the science and engineering disciplines, as well as to NASA’s workforce.

“The STEM workforce continues to grow, and today’s students, studying at a variety of higher-education institutions — community colleges, primarily undergraduate institutions, and minority-serving institutions — are the STEM workforce of tomorrow, who will work to solve some of our biggest challenges at home while answering some of our biggest questions about our universe,” said Padi Boyd, director of MOSAICS at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “Exposing today’s students to the incredibly inspiring and cutting-edge discoveries made through NASA’s space science people and resources ensures that these students get the training they need to persist in STEM careers, while fostering enduring collaborations between NASA researchers and faculty at a wide range of institutions.”

We've Got Some Space for You

NASA’s Science Mission Directorate MOSAICS program funds research projects building relationships between college faculty and researchers at the agency while providing mentorship and training for students in STEM disciplines. The projects support teams at academic institutions that historically have not been part of the agency’s research enterprise — including Hispanic-serving institutions, historically Black colleges and universities, Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving institutions, and primarily undergraduate institutions.

The program previously awarded seed funding to 11 teams in February and 13 teams in April. This third cohort brings the total number of projects funded to 44 teams at 36 academic institutions in 21 U.S. states and territories, including Washington and Puerto Rico, in collaboration with seven NASA centers. A new opportunity to apply for seed funding is now open until March 28, 2025.

The following projects were selected as the third cohort to receive seed funding:

Over the summer, undergraduate students from Emory and other institutions dove into research ranging from infectious diseases to theater. They displayed their research in late July through oral and poster presentations on Emory’s campus. Photos by Daniel Kumi, Emory Photo/Video.

intern presentation

Emory’s Atlanta campus was alive with thought-provoking discussion, inquisitive questions and displays of intellectual curiosity during the Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium at the Emory Student Center and Performing Arts Studio on Wednesday, July 31.

More than 111 undergraduate students from Emory and other institutions across the country spent 10 weeks in the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program conducting independent research, connecting with distinguished researchers and forging bonds with fellow students.

The SURE program, housed in Undergraduate Research Programs (URP), an office within the Pathways Center , provides housing and a stipend to support students’ research and professional development efforts. Research projects this summer encompassed a variety of fields, including arts, humanities and sciences. In addition to conducting full-time research under a faculty member’s supervision, students participated in professional development exercises and seminars.

Keira Davis , associate director for undergraduate research in URP, expressed pride in the variety of disciplines represented at the symposium.

“We need an interdisciplinary approach to move forward in the world. It’s critical to have multiple perspectives from different backgrounds,” said Davis. “Sometimes, for example, a science major would interpret something different than a history major. Having all these different projects in one room is valuable beyond measure.”

Davis also noted her excitement about the future of undergraduate research at Emory.

“I'm enthusiastic about the future of undergraduate research on campus, especially as we expand into interdisciplinary approaches. It will be fascinating to see how collaboration across various fields and departments enhances the depth and breadth of research opportunities,” said Davis.

Ten weeks of dedication to research

The symposium opened in the morning with two stirring piano performances in the Performing Arts Studio by Satvik Elayavalli and Peiming Yang, both supervised by Elena Cholakova , professor of piano studies and associate music professor.

Yang, a rising senior double majoring in music composition and psychology, spent 10 weeks studying and practicing Chopin’s Ballade No. 2 and No. 3. He noted how SURE allowed him to explore his passions in piano.

“During the regular semester, it’s really hard for me to devote time to practicing because of academics, so summer is a great opportunity to concentrate and focus on piano,” Yang said. “SURE has enabled me to do that.”

Following the piano performances, students, mentors and supporters moved into the Emory Student Center for an afternoon of oral and poster presentations.

Max Coplin, a rising senior from Brooklyn, New York, focused on a topic within her classics major and ethics minor. Her oral presentation, “Rational Hippocratic magic: Is there a place for magic in the healing traditions of Classical and Hellenistic Greece?” was supervised by Sandra Blakely , chair and associate professor of classics.

Coplin’s project had surprising findings. She discovered that folk, magical and Hippocratic healing existed in the same space at the same time in ancient Greece, a conclusion that goes directly against many scholarly perspectives.

“The research has implications in the usage of cases from the ancient world in modern medicine and anthropological studies,” said Coplin. “It’s important work to further the field concerning the relations between traditions of magic and medicine.”

Blakely said the project was a natural extension of discussions they’d held in a class Coplin took last spring.

“Max is such a self-starter. She came into the project with fully formed questions and it was wonderful to see her set parameters of how much she was going to read and then really digest it and create the webwork of meaning between current scholarship and old scholarship,” said Blakely.

“The summer research experience is one in which the student has a chance to let the sources themselves speak a little more clearly than during the semester when they’re just barreling toward the next exam or paper. There’s an organic quality about it that really maps onto what it means to do professional research in the field,” continued Blakely.

Toluwanimi Olaleye, an Oxford College and rising third-year student studying psychology from Philadelphia, also delivered an oral presentation, titled “Gun violence as a public health crisis: Exploring its impact on the mental health of children and adolescents.” Olaleye was mentored this summer by Leyla Eghbalzad , assistant professor of psychology at Oxford College.

Olaleye conducted a literature review and interviewed professionals in health care, public policy and gun violence advocacy. She found both legislative and community-based factors that influence gun violence.

“After being personally affected by gun violence, it was something I wanted to research. Coming to Oxford and hearing about the SURE program, I knew it was a way to pursue this further,” said Olaleye. “After this research, I’m considering taking it a step further and getting a master’s degree in public health.”

In the poster presentation hall, students displayed charts, graphs, research questions, suggestions for further research and more. They proudly stood by their posters — many alongside their project mentors — engaging visitors and explaining what they spent their time researching this summer.

Bella Parker, a rising fourth-year student from Newnan, Georgia, spent her summer at Emory, away from her home institution of Stetson University in Florida. The molecular and cellular biology major worked on a project titled “Investigating the effects of antibiotics on e. coli K-12 outer membrane permeability in response to O antigen re-introduction,” mentored by Marcin Grabowicz , associate professor of microbiology in the School of Medicine.

Parker was eager to gain more experience in a new lab and in a field related to previous lab work she’d completed.

“Marcin has taught me so much. Last summer, I worked in a cell culture lab at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and this summer was a transition from cell culture to more bacterial physiology,” said Parker. “Being able to learn different techniques and expose myself to different biological fields has been great. I also loved participating in a program that invests in undergraduate endeavors and their futures.”

Grabowicz expressed his excitement about having new, eager students in the lab to tackle intense scientific endeavors.

“It’s easy to lose sight of how exciting working in a lab is for students because I’ve done it for so long,” said Grabowicz. “It’s nice to see them come in and learn the techniques that we take for granted every day, and to get a sense of that enthusiasm and motivation to get experience.”

Cormack Ye, a rising fourth-year student majoring in interdisciplinary studies, used his time in SURE to conduct research for what will become his senior thesis. The research, titled “Development and application of AI curricula in Emory University’s Goizueta Business School: Strategies for addressing labor market changes,” was advised by Mark Risjord , director of the Institute for the Liberal Arts at Emory.

“Dr. Risjord is a great professor who knows so much about interdisciplinary study, which is a critical component if you really want to understand AI,” said Ye. “It’s been great for this to be my main focus this summer and to talk with Dr. Risjord weekly.”

  • Unless otherwise separately undertaken by the Licensor, to the extent possible, the Licensor offers the Licensed Material as-is and as-available, and makes no representations or warranties of any kind concerning the Licensed Material, whether express, implied, statutory, or other. This includes, without limitation, warranties of title, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, absence of latent or other defects, accuracy, or the presence or absence of errors, whether or not known or discoverable. Where disclaimers of warranties are not allowed in full or in part, this disclaimer may not apply to You.
  • To the extent possible, in no event will the Licensor be liable to You on any legal theory (including, without limitation, negligence) or otherwise for any direct, special, indirect, incidental, consequential, punitive, exemplary, or other losses, costs, expenses, or damages arising out of this Public License or use of the Licensed Material, even if the Licensor has been advised of the possibility of such losses, costs, expenses, or damages. Where a limitation of liability is not allowed in full or in part, this limitation may not apply to You.

Section 6 – Term and Termination.

  • This Public License applies for the term of the Copyright and Similar Rights licensed here. However, if You fail to comply with this Public License, then Your rights under this Public License terminate automatically.

Where Your right to use the Licensed Material has terminated under Section   6(a) , it reinstates:

  • automatically as of the date the violation is cured, provided it is cured within 30 days of Your discovery of the violation; or
  • upon express reinstatement by the Licensor.
  • For the avoidance of doubt, the Licensor may also offer the Licensed Material under separate terms or conditions or stop distributing the Licensed Material at any time; however, doing so will not terminate this Public License.
  • Sections   1 ,   5 ,   6 ,   7 , and   8   survive termination of this Public License.

Section 7 – Other Terms and Conditions.

  • The Licensor shall not be bound by any additional or different terms or conditions communicated by You unless expressly agreed.
  • Any arrangements, understandings, or agreements regarding the Licensed Material not stated herein are separate from and independent of the terms and conditions of this Public License.

Section 8 – Interpretation.

  • For the avoidance of doubt, this Public License does not, and shall not be interpreted to, reduce, limit, restrict, or impose conditions on any use of the Licensed Material that could lawfully be made without permission under this Public License.
  • To the extent possible, if any provision of this Public License is deemed unenforceable, it shall be automatically reformed to the minimum extent necessary to make it enforceable. If the provision cannot be reformed, it shall be severed from this Public License without affecting the enforceability of the remaining terms and conditions.
  • No term or condition of this Public License will be waived and no failure to comply consented to unless expressly agreed to by the Licensor.
  • Nothing in this Public License constitutes or may be interpreted as a limitation upon, or waiver of, any privileges and immunities that apply to the Licensor or You, including from the legal processes of any jurisdiction or authority.

Consumer Behavior and Brand Perception: Marketing Projects for BBA Final Year Students

Consumer Behavior and Brand Perception: Marketing Projects for BBA Final Year Students

As BBA final year students prepare to enter the dynamic world of marketing, understanding consumer behavior and brand perception becomes crucial. This article delves into the intricacies of these subjects, providing insights into how psychological, cultural, and digital influences shape consumer choices and how brand identity impacts customer loyalty. It also explores the research methods and strategies that students can employ in their marketing projects to effectively analyze and integrate consumer behavior insights.

Key Takeaways

  • Comprehending consumer behavior is essential for developing effective marketing strategies that resonate with target audiences.
  • Brand perception significantly influences consumer decisions, and building brand identity and trust is key to fostering loyalty.
  • Quantitative and qualitative research methods are both valuable in gathering and interpreting data on consumer behavior.
  • Consumer-centric marketing campaigns and product development should be informed by in-depth consumer behavior analysis.
  • Case studies and real-world examples can provide practical insights for BBA students in understanding and applying marketing concepts.

Understanding Consumer Behavior: The Foundation of Marketing Strategy

The psychology behind consumer choices.

You must grasp the psychology behind consumer choices to effectively tailor your marketing strategies. Consumer behavior research helps companies identify where customers consume content and look for solutions , allowing them to target their marketing efforts more precisely. Understanding the motivations and decision-making processes of consumers can lead to more engaging and successful marketing campaigns.

Cultural and Social Influences on Buying Habits

Your marketing strategy must consider the cultural and social influences on buying habits. These factors shape consumer preferences and can determine the success or failure of a product. By analyzing how cultural norms and social interactions influence purchasing decisions, you can adapt your marketing approach to resonate with your target audience.

The Impact of Digital Media on Consumer Decisions

Digital media has revolutionized the way consumers make decisions. With the advent of social networks and online reviews, information is more accessible, and peer opinions are highly valued. To leverage this, you should focus on experiential marketing—directly engaging consumers and encouraging them to participate in a brand experience. This approach is a highly effective way to build customer and brand loyalty .

Brand Perception and Its Influence on Consumer Decisions

Understanding how brand perception shapes consumer behavior is crucial for your marketing strategy. The Halo Effect significantly contributes to brand perception , coloring consumer judgment and guiding buying behavior. When you build a strong brand identity, you foster trust among your target audience, which is essential for long-term success. Analyzing the role of brand loyalty reveals that it's not just about repeat purchases; it's about creating advocates for your brand. Through case studies of successful brand repositioning strategies, you'll see how brands have transformed their image and, consequently, their market position. Remember, brand perception significantly impacts consumer behavior, shaping purchasing decisions, brand loyalty, and advocacy. A positive perception can motivate consumers to choose your brand over competitors, even at a premium price.

Quantitative Research Methods in Consumer Analysis

Designing effective surveys and questionnaires.

When embarking on a marketing project, it's essential to gather data that is both reliable and relevant. To achieve this, you must learn how to find research question that will guide your quantitative study. Crafting effective surveys and questionnaires is a critical step in this process. Ensure your questions are clear, concise, and tailored to elicit the specific information you need. Here's a simple structure to follow:

  • Define the objective of your survey.
  • Determine the demographic of your target respondents.
  • Choose the type of questions (open-ended, multiple choice, etc.).
  • Pilot test the survey to refine questions.
  • Distribute the survey and collect responses.

Statistical Tools for Consumer Data Analysis

Once you've collected your data, the next step is to analyze it using statistical tools . This analysis can range from basic descriptive statistics to more complex inferential techniques. Tools like SPSS or R can help you make sense of the numbers, allowing you to draw meaningful insights about consumer behavior. For instance, you might use a table like this to present your findings:

Age Group Average Spending Standard Deviation
18-25 $150 $50
26-35 $200 $75
36-45 $250 $85

Interpreting Quantitative Data for Marketing Insights

The final step is interpreting the data to extract valuable marketing insights. This involves looking beyond the numbers to understand what they mean for your brand or product. It's crucial to consider ethical considerations and accuracy to ensure your results are trustworthy and actionable. By understanding the story your data tells, you can make informed decisions that will resonate with your target audience.

Qualitative Approaches to Understanding Consumer Mindsets

Conducting in-depth interviews and focus groups.

When you're delving into the qualitative aspects of consumer behavior, conducting in-depth interviews and focus groups can be incredibly revealing. These methods allow you to explore the nuances of consumer mindsets, uncovering the emotions , motivations, and attitudes that drive purchasing decisions. Mastering the Interview is crucial, and you'll want to define the scope, ensure data validity, and establish rapport with participants. Developing a thoughtful interview guide and addressing sensitive topics with empathy are key takeaways for overcoming challenges in qualitative research.

Ethnographic Studies in Marketing Research

Ethnographic studies provide a rich, contextual understanding of consumer behavior by observing people in their natural environments. This approach can illuminate how cultural and social influences shape buying habits, offering insights that surveys alone cannot capture. It's a study that blends elements from various disciplines, aiming to understand the consumer's decision-making process and the factors that influence it, such as social identity and consumption culture.

Thematic Analysis of Consumer Narratives

Thematic analysis is a powerful tool for identifying patterns and themes within qualitative data. By analyzing consumer narratives, you can gain a deeper understanding of how consumers view themselves and the products they choose, which can inform more effective marketing strategies. This method involves careful coding of data and can reveal insights into consumer-marketer relationships, trust, and loyalty—factors that are essential for building brand identity.

Integrating Consumer Behavior Insights into Marketing Projects

Developing consumer-centric marketing campaigns.

You've learned that understanding consumer behavior is crucial for creating effective marketing strategies. Now, it's time to apply these insights to develop consumer-centric marketing campaigns . Start by segmenting your audience based on their behavior and preferences. Then, tailor your messaging to resonate with each segment. Remember, a successful campaign speaks directly to the consumer's needs and desires, often leading to increased engagement and conversions.

Innovative Product Development Based on Consumer Feedback

Listening to consumer feedback is essential for innovation. Use surveys, social media listening, and direct customer interactions to gather input. This feedback can guide the development of new products or the improvement of existing ones. Incorporate the voice of the customer into every stage of product development to ensure that the end result truly meets consumer expectations and fills a market gap.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Marketing Strategies

Once your marketing strategies are in place, you must evaluate their effectiveness. Use a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods to measure success. Key performance indicators (KPIs) like sales volume, website traffic, and social media engagement can provide valuable data. Additionally, customer satisfaction surveys and focus groups can offer deeper insights into the consumer experience. Regular evaluation allows for timely adjustments to strategies, ensuring they remain aligned with consumer behavior and market trends.

a photograph of Carly Meyers and Margaret McGladrey

After coming to the University of Kentucky undecided on her major, Carly Meyers quickly discovered her love for public health after taking an intro to public health course. The course opened Meyers’ eyes to the impact public health initiatives can have on communities and she knew she had found her calling.

Meyers, a Kentucky native and junior at the UK College of Public of Health (CPH), is now working with Margaret McGladrey, Ph.D., on several research projects. Meyers first met McGladrey through the CPH 395 undergraduate research course as she was intrigued by the possibility of gaining hands-on experience.

Impressed by McGladrey’s passion, Meyers saw her as an ideal mentor.

McGladrey is a faculty member at the UK Innovation in Population Health Center and a research assistant professor in CPH’s Department of Health Management and Policy. Her research focuses on community-based participatory research, program evaluation, particularly within residential programs, primarily focusing on child welfare and behavioral health interventions and other public health settings. As a mentor, she provides practical, research-based guidance, helping her students develop research skills and navigate their careers in public health.

The Insight Generator Tool Evaluation project

One project Meyers is working on with McGladrey involves evaluation of how staff and clinicians at Gemma Services, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children, youth and families through various behavioral health, education and residential programs, uses data to make decisions. They will be using the Insight Generator tool, a digital application designed to help staff and clinicians in residential programs systematically analyze and improve their practices by capturing detailed feedback and data to identify patterns, successes and areas for improvement. They use a method called Ripple Effects Mapping (REM), which involves group discussions to visually map out the impacts of the tool. This approach helps to identify both expected and unexpected results and find successes and areas for improvement. The findings will be used to improve the tool and enhance the quality of residential programs at Gemma Services.

The project involves conducting two-hour video conference sessions with five different groups of Gemma Services staff, each with varying roles and levels of experience with the Insight Generator tool. By keeping staff and supervisors in separate groups, these sessions will help gather honest feedback.

Meyers’ primary responsibilities with this project include interview transcription and data interpretation. After each interview session, Meyers transcribes the conversations, and collaborates closely with McGladrey on data interpretation strategies, providing crucial support in the qualitative participatory evaluation process.

Meyers found that REM is particularly beneficial.

“It allows us to easily trace the benefits or obstacles of tools back to the root. This assists us in recommending if certain features of the tool should be kept or improved upon,” she shared.

The team will use their findings to draft a comprehensive mind map combining all data and present it an all-staff meeting at Gemma Services for member-checking and further discussion. The findings will inform the development of a second version of the Insight Generator tool.

Additionally, the UK team will present and publish the results at professional venues such as the annual meeting of the Association of Children’s Residential & Community Services and Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) webinars. BBI is a national initiative working to identify and promote best practices and policies that promote strong and closely coordinated partnerships and collaborations between families, youth, advocates, community and residential service providers and oversight agencies.

“This evaluation has opened up opportunities for future collaboration and research,” McGladrey said. “We are partnering with Gemma Services and BCT Partners on grant applications to develop, test, and expand the Insight Generator tool with additional residential providers, enhancing its effectiveness and improving residential program management and client outcomes.”

The Theory of Change project

Meyers is also working with McGladrey on the Theory of Change project, also part of BBI. This project aims to evaluate and enhance the effectiveness of residential interventions, focusing on the feasibility, acceptability, usability and outcomes of a theory of change developed over the past three years by the BBI Outcomes Workgroup and Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago.

A significant part of the project is the development of a comparative book-length case study, examining the qualitative improvement processes of five provider teams. Meyers contributes to the project by taking notes during meetings, organizing process data, documenting and coding data, and collaborating with consultants, providers, mentors and post-doctoral scholars. Her tasks are crucial to the project's data collection and analysis.

The two-year project timeline includes a design, intervention and post-phase, with results expected in 2026. Expected outcomes include detailed case studies, insights into residential interventions' feasibility and acceptability, and best practice recommendations. This will offer evidence-based best practices for program implementation.

Looking ahead

McGladrey’s mentorship not only has enhanced Meyers’ academic experience but also has sparked her interest in program implementation and evaluation. Through McGladrey’s guidance, Meyers has become a more capable, confident and passionate public health researcher, eager to make significant contributions to the field.

“This research class has drastically increased my interest in program implementation and evaluation, specifically in residential treatment programs,” Meyers said about her experiences. “I’ve developed such a wide skill set through this class, from data transcription to research and data analysis. I am confident that my acquired knowledge from this class is applicable to any career path I decide to take.”

Meyers encourages fellow undergraduates to explore research opportunities.

“If you’re unsure, at least go to the information session, or even get in touch with me!” said Meyers. “My biggest advice is to not be intimidated by it because you’ll never know if you’ll love it unless you try. If this class truly doesn’t work out for you, you have every opportunity to drop it, so why not give it a go.”

While Meyers is still exploring her long-term career goals, her growing interest in program implementation and evaluation highlights the influence of McGladrey’s mentorship on her professional aspirations.

This work is funded by Gemma Services and the Oregon Department of Human Services through the Building Bridges Initiative/Association of Children’s Residential and Community Services.

How to cite ChatGPT

Timothy McAdoo

Use discount code STYLEBLOG15 for 15% off APA Style print products with free shipping in the United States.

We, the APA Style team, are not robots. We can all pass a CAPTCHA test , and we know our roles in a Turing test . And, like so many nonrobot human beings this year, we’ve spent a fair amount of time reading, learning, and thinking about issues related to large language models, artificial intelligence (AI), AI-generated text, and specifically ChatGPT . We’ve also been gathering opinions and feedback about the use and citation of ChatGPT. Thank you to everyone who has contributed and shared ideas, opinions, research, and feedback.

In this post, I discuss situations where students and researchers use ChatGPT to create text and to facilitate their research, not to write the full text of their paper or manuscript. We know instructors have differing opinions about how or even whether students should use ChatGPT, and we’ll be continuing to collect feedback about instructor and student questions. As always, defer to instructor guidelines when writing student papers. For more about guidelines and policies about student and author use of ChatGPT, see the last section of this post.

Quoting or reproducing the text created by ChatGPT in your paper

If you’ve used ChatGPT or other AI tools in your research, describe how you used the tool in your Method section or in a comparable section of your paper. For literature reviews or other types of essays or response or reaction papers, you might describe how you used the tool in your introduction. In your text, provide the prompt you used and then any portion of the relevant text that was generated in response.

Unfortunately, the results of a ChatGPT “chat” are not retrievable by other readers, and although nonretrievable data or quotations in APA Style papers are usually cited as personal communications , with ChatGPT-generated text there is no person communicating. Quoting ChatGPT’s text from a chat session is therefore more like sharing an algorithm’s output; thus, credit the author of the algorithm with a reference list entry and the corresponding in-text citation.

When prompted with “Is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized, “the notation that people can be characterized as ‘left-brained’ or ‘right-brained’ is considered to be an oversimplification and a popular myth” (OpenAI, 2023).

OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat

You may also put the full text of long responses from ChatGPT in an appendix of your paper or in online supplemental materials, so readers have access to the exact text that was generated. It is particularly important to document the exact text created because ChatGPT will generate a unique response in each chat session, even if given the same prompt. If you create appendices or supplemental materials, remember that each should be called out at least once in the body of your APA Style paper.

When given a follow-up prompt of “What is a more accurate representation?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that “different brain regions work together to support various cognitive processes” and “the functional specialization of different regions can change in response to experience and environmental factors” (OpenAI, 2023; see Appendix A for the full transcript).

Creating a reference to ChatGPT or other AI models and software

The in-text citations and references above are adapted from the reference template for software in Section 10.10 of the Publication Manual (American Psychological Association, 2020, Chapter 10). Although here we focus on ChatGPT, because these guidelines are based on the software template, they can be adapted to note the use of other large language models (e.g., Bard), algorithms, and similar software.

The reference and in-text citations for ChatGPT are formatted as follows:

  • Parenthetical citation: (OpenAI, 2023)
  • Narrative citation: OpenAI (2023)

Let’s break that reference down and look at the four elements (author, date, title, and source):

Author: The author of the model is OpenAI.

Date: The date is the year of the version you used. Following the template in Section 10.10, you need to include only the year, not the exact date. The version number provides the specific date information a reader might need.

Title: The name of the model is “ChatGPT,” so that serves as the title and is italicized in your reference, as shown in the template. Although OpenAI labels unique iterations (i.e., ChatGPT-3, ChatGPT-4), they are using “ChatGPT” as the general name of the model, with updates identified with version numbers.

The version number is included after the title in parentheses. The format for the version number in ChatGPT references includes the date because that is how OpenAI is labeling the versions. Different large language models or software might use different version numbering; use the version number in the format the author or publisher provides, which may be a numbering system (e.g., Version 2.0) or other methods.

Bracketed text is used in references for additional descriptions when they are needed to help a reader understand what’s being cited. References for a number of common sources, such as journal articles and books, do not include bracketed descriptions, but things outside of the typical peer-reviewed system often do. In the case of a reference for ChatGPT, provide the descriptor “Large language model” in square brackets. OpenAI describes ChatGPT-4 as a “large multimodal model,” so that description may be provided instead if you are using ChatGPT-4. Later versions and software or models from other companies may need different descriptions, based on how the publishers describe the model. The goal of the bracketed text is to briefly describe the kind of model to your reader.

Source: When the publisher name and the author name are the same, do not repeat the publisher name in the source element of the reference, and move directly to the URL. This is the case for ChatGPT. The URL for ChatGPT is https://chat.openai.com/chat . For other models or products for which you may create a reference, use the URL that links as directly as possible to the source (i.e., the page where you can access the model, not the publisher’s homepage).

Other questions about citing ChatGPT

You may have noticed the confidence with which ChatGPT described the ideas of brain lateralization and how the brain operates, without citing any sources. I asked for a list of sources to support those claims and ChatGPT provided five references—four of which I was able to find online. The fifth does not seem to be a real article; the digital object identifier given for that reference belongs to a different article, and I was not able to find any article with the authors, date, title, and source details that ChatGPT provided. Authors using ChatGPT or similar AI tools for research should consider making this scrutiny of the primary sources a standard process. If the sources are real, accurate, and relevant, it may be better to read those original sources to learn from that research and paraphrase or quote from those articles, as applicable, than to use the model’s interpretation of them.

We’ve also received a number of other questions about ChatGPT. Should students be allowed to use it? What guidelines should instructors create for students using AI? Does using AI-generated text constitute plagiarism? Should authors who use ChatGPT credit ChatGPT or OpenAI in their byline? What are the copyright implications ?

On these questions, researchers, editors, instructors, and others are actively debating and creating parameters and guidelines. Many of you have sent us feedback, and we encourage you to continue to do so in the comments below. We will also study the policies and procedures being established by instructors, publishers, and academic institutions, with a goal of creating guidelines that reflect the many real-world applications of AI-generated text.

For questions about manuscript byline credit, plagiarism, and related ChatGPT and AI topics, the APA Style team is seeking the recommendations of APA Journals editors. APA Style guidelines based on those recommendations will be posted on this blog and on the APA Style site later this year.

Update: APA Journals has published policies on the use of generative AI in scholarly materials .

We, the APA Style team humans, appreciate your patience as we navigate these unique challenges and new ways of thinking about how authors, researchers, and students learn, write, and work with new technologies.

The Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability has selected eight interconnected Solution Areas to focus its research efforts over the next decade. This new research plan amplifies the school’s ability to translate Stanford research into large-scale solutions and inform key decision makers in policy and business.

Selected based on extensive faculty input and assessment of where Stanford can make the most meaningful impact, the eight areas are: climate; water; energy; food; risk, resilience, and adaptation; nature; cities; and platforms and tools for monitoring and decision making.

“Solution Areas identify and leverage the critical junctions between the most pressing global sustainability challenges and the areas where Stanford has the talent and expertise to find solutions,” said Dean Arun Majumdar. “This collaborative all-campus approach expands and strengthens our commitment to using all the power we have – the knowledge, the education, the talent, the innovation, the resources, the influence – to build a thriving planet for future generations.”

‘Integrative Projects’ and ‘Flagship Destinations’

In each Solution Area, the school plans to build two types of research initiatives. One type, called Integrative Projects, will be managed by the school’s institutes, including the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment , the Precourt Institute for Energy , and a planned Sustainable Societies Institute.

Integrative Projects will be organized around decade-long research themes and dedicated to creating solutions through interdisciplinary collaboration, engagement with partners beyond Stanford, identifying significant knowledge gaps, and understanding systems.

According to Chris Field , the Perry L. McCarty Director of the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and a professor in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability and the School of Humanities and Sciences , the new commitment to these areas “will provide both resources and coordination that expand Stanford faculty’s capacity to deliver sustainability solutions at scale.”

A second type of research initiative, called Flagship Destinations, is managed by Stanford’s Sustainability Accelerator . Flagship Destinations are targets for the pace and scale of work to address challenges facing Earth, climate, and society. For example, the school’s first Flagship Destination, announced in 2023 , calls for enabling the removal of billions of tons of planet-warming gases annually from Earth’s atmosphere by the middle of this century. By working backward from sustainability targets in consultation with faculty and external experts, this initiative seeks to rapidly translate Stanford research into policy and technology solutions. Additional Flagship Destinations will be announced later this week.

Whereas Integrative Projects are designed to produce knowledge and evidence that can eventually lead to solutions, Flagship Destination projects are intended to help verify and demonstrate that well-studied solutions can succeed at large scale so they can be launched out of Stanford and implemented for the benefit of humanity and our planet. Scalable solutions nurtured and launched through these projects could take the form of policy frameworks, open-source platforms, nonprofit organizations, new for-profit companies, and ongoing collaborations all committed to addressing pressing sustainability challenges.

“By working together in these Solution Areas across disciplines and with collaborators beyond the university, we maximize our ability to have positive impacts on the timeframe and scale needed for the planet and humanity,” said Scott Fendorf , senior associate dean for integrative initiatives and the Terry Huffington Professor in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.

Workshops will be held with faculty and external experts to develop research strategies for each Solution Area on a rolling basis. Strategy workshops, opportunities to provide input on future Integrative Projects, and requests for proposals (open to all Stanford faculty) will be announced in the coming months.

Related message from leadership: Read a letter to faculty about the new Solution Areas from Dean Majumdar with Precourt Institute for Energy director William Chueh; Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment director Chris Field; Accelerator faculty director Yi Cui and executive director Charlotte Pera; and Integrative Initiatives associate dean Jenna Davis and senior associate dean Scott Fendorf.
