50 Creative Ideas for Elementary Day-of-the-Week Routines

From Make-a-Change Monday to Fun Fact Friday, you’ll have an easy to remember, engaging routine for every day of the week.

50 Creative Ideas for Elementary Day of the Week Routines.

As teachers, we all want to build connections with our students and make them feel welcome in our classrooms. What if we had routines to do these things that were easy to implement and easy to remember? These Day-of-the-Week routines require very little prep, are customizable for teachers in any subject area, and are a fabulous “soft launch” to get students engaged in what’s happening in class. They can take as little as 5 or 10 minutes. I like to change mine up weekly and have had students suggest questions as well.

Getting started is easy. First, decide on what you want your students to be doing for each of the five days. Reading? Writing? Discussing? Solving a problem or riddle? See our list below to get some inspiration (You don’t have to use alliteration, but it does make them easier to remember 🙂

Next, figure out a reliable place and way you’ll notify students of what their task is. Teachers can devote a section of their board, say prompts verbally, or create Google Slides for each day. If one of your routines requires sticky notes or another item to share their responses, you’ll want to have those ready for students to pick up too.

Here are some ideas for Day-of-the-Week routines to get you started.

  • Mindset Monday: What is something that you are working hard to improve this week?
  • Make-a-Word Monday: Add a word to the scrabble board. Make sure it links up.
  • Missed You Monday: What is something memorable you did this weekend?
  • Take-a-Minute Monday: Tell me about your favorite _____.
  • Motivational Monday: Mondays can be tough. Take a sticky note and write a motivational note to a classmate.
  • Make-a-Change Monday: How can you make the world more awesome?
  • Mystery Monday: Can you solve this riddle?
  • Mood Monday: If you were an emoji, which would you be today?
  • Marvel Monday: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
  • Manic Monday: What’s something that drives you crazy?
  • Time for a Vote Tuesday: What is your favorite ____?
  • TV Tuesday: What TV show are you enjoying right now?
  • Top 2 Tuesday: Choose a paper with someone’s name and write two great things about them. Put it on their desk.
  • Tasty Tuesday: What is one of your favorite foods?
  • Talk to Me Tuesday: What is something that a lot of people don’t know about you?
  • Tell Me Something Good Tuesday: What is something good you have seen someone else do?

  • Talented Tuesday: What is something you are good at?
  • Teach Us Tuesday: What is something you can teach someone to do?
  • Well-Done Wednesday: What is something great that you have done this week?
  • What Would You Do Wednesday: What would you do if _____? (e.g., … you were 6 inches tall, you won a million dollars, you were invisible for the day)

In my classroom, it has helped students, and they learn more about me as I participate too. My students enjoy seeing what question is posted each day—they have even come up with their own ideas for questions.

  • Problem of the Week

During each week from 2002 to 2004, I posted a problem on this page. Some problems are new, and some are classics. Half of them are physics (the odd weeks), and half are math (the even weeks). In most cases they're quite difficult. After all, I call them "Problems of the Week," and not "Problems of the Hour"! Many of the math problems can be found in my book: The Green-Eyed Dragons and Other Mathematical Monsters . And many of the physics problems can be found in my classical mechanics textbook  for the Physics 16 course here at Harvard.

7 Investigates: Birth control tested as a way to solve local cities’ rat problems

MALDEN, MASS. (WHDH) - Rats are increasingly pestering neighbors in Malden.

“They run around the day like they own the neighborhood,” said Ryan Newhall. “They’re huge, they’re like this big and I’m like man, oh man.”

Newhall lives close to the Malden River and said in the last few years he’s seen more rodents scurrying around his home.

“It’s a big problem. I didn’t know there were that many. You can hear them gnawing around, getting their food,” he said. ““My neighbor’s house, they come right in the basement, they come right in. They’ll find a way, if there is a way in they’ll figure out a way.”

For Malden resident Sheryl Moretti, the rats are more than just creepy. She said rats are wreaking havoc on her driveway.

“The rats are burrowing, making tunnels under your driveway,” she said she was told, “I’m numb… I was petrified. I didn’t want to park there.”

She spent $4,000 to replace her driveway and now wants the city to do more to curb the problem.

Nearly 100 other residents have complained about rats on the city’s online reporting system this year. Malden neighbors complained of dead rats on sidewalks, rats chewing through car wires and infesting homes.

Malden installed electric traps throughout the city which have caught and killed more than a thousand rats since January 2023.

Despite this measure, many residents say more must be done.

Malden is hardly alone in fighting against rodents, so for a better solution the city might not have to look too far.

Residents in Jamaica Plain have been feeding rats birth control. Feeders that resemble normal rat traps are filled with pellets that suppress the fertility of rodents. The birth control pellets called GoodBites are part of a pilot program that residents started with the company WISDOM Good Works. Over the past year, the number of rats has been cut by 60 percent.

“Reducing by 50-60% is really where we find that balance that they are no longer engaging in the human wildlife conflict, they are no longer a nuisance, they are no longer getting into your garbage cans… at that point it can really be a reduction that can be claimed as a win,” explained WISDOM Good Works director of operations Alaina Gonzalez-White.

Gonzalez-White explained the pellets are completely harmless to other animals and the environment unlike rat poison.

“When you are pouring poison into our environment you are affecting not only the intended target but everything else that lives in that ecosystem,” she said.

The ugly consequences of rodenticide made headlines in Boston in 2023 when a poisoned owl was bleeding at Faneuil Hall before being rescued .

Many local pet owners have also pushed for a decrease in the use of rat poison after their pets consumed it and died .

Gonzalez-White said while the birth control pellets are better for the environment it doesn’t offer the short-term impact that rat poison does. However, over time the pellets will have a better sustained impact.

“While you might see an immediate dip in the sheer numbers, the ones you don’t capture are going to continue to breed. They are going to continue to multiply and you are going to have an inevitable rebound effect. By utilizing fertility control, which in my opinion is the golden key, you are taking a more proactive approach to long-term suppression,” she said.

Lauren Ockene is one of the JP residents that has been part of the pilot program.

She’s lived in the area for three decades. She used to have a rat burrow in her yard and see rodents constantly around the neighborhood.

“We used a lot of things to try to get rid of them. I wouldn’t use poison but we used snap traps…setting them up at dark and then retrieving them at dawn and dealing with the dead rat. There were close to 30 dead rats that I killed and dealt with that way,” Ockene remembered.

Now she’s has three WISDOM Good Works feeders in her yard.

“It’s really, really great,” Ockene said. “We don’t see them in our yard. We haven’t seen any in a lot of months and there is no sign of a burrow anymore which is huge.”

Some Boston officials want to use the rat birth control throughout the city.

“This is a remarkable success that we must learn from. Now it is time for our city to show leadership and scale this program up,” City Councilor Enrique Pepen said during a City Council meeting in July. Boston city councilors plan to hold a hearing about adding the pellets to the city’s Rodent Action Plan on Sept. 23.

Some Malden residents are pushing for the pellets too.

“I’m for anything and everything that will work because I don’t know how they do that but if they can get that started in Malden I think we should start doing that,” Newhall said.

Malden officials are skeptical rodent fertility will be the best solution because of its inability to kill rats immediately.

For now, the city is considering increasing the requirements for landlords to deal with rats, and fining residents for improper trash storage.

The Malden Health Department “has offered these amendments and is hoping the City Council will take them up in the course of business and enact them.”

Could Notre Dame Step in to Fill Ole Miss and Lane Kiffin’s 2025 Scheduling Void?

Nick shepkowski | 6 hours ago.

Sep 14, 2024; Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA; Mississippi Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin during the first half against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium.

  • Notre Dame Fighting Irish
  • Ole Miss Rebels

The Lane Kiffin comeback story is one you don't need to be a fan of Ole Miss to appreciate. Kiffin held head coaching jobs with the Raiders, University of Tennessee, and USC before shortcomings with the Trojans led to his firing. The former Fresno State quarterback worked his way back up the ladder both on and away from the football field in an inspiring fashion. He has been at Ole Miss since 2020 and turned the Rebels into one of the best football teams in the country. That rise comes with a cost however, as finding Power Four opponents isn't easy. Ole Miss found out just days before destroying Wake Forest last week that the Demon Deacons were backing out of going to Oxford, Mississippi next year, leaving a sudden hole in the 2025 Ole Miss football schedule. With that news, my first thought to Notre Dame's 2025 schedule.

Could Notre Dame Step In and Schedule Ole Miss?

"Kind of an unwritten rule not to do that actually" Lane Kiffin expressed his frustration with Wake Forest for cancelling their 2025 matchup in Oxford: pic.twitter.com/dAtZ1w8WF4 — Grace Ybarra (@gnybarra) September 16, 2024

Ole Miss now sits with an opening on its schedule, as does Notre Dame, who also has 11 of 12 opponents for the 2025 season announced. So could the two make a game in 2025 work? The idea is great but the like off dates for the two programs is the problem. Notre Dame doesn't have a game officially scheduled for Aug. 30 or Sept. 6 yet, but Ole Miss does. Ole Miss has the sudden Sept. 13 opening, but that day Texas A&M makes only its second-ever trip to Notre Dame Stadium, so that won't be switched out.

Later in the year might be possible as off weeks haven't been announced yet, but would Ole Miss want to schedule Notre Dame right in the middle of the SEC regular season? I could be wrong but I'm guessing a conference slate that features games against LSU, Georgia, and at Oklahoma probably isn't looking to add another possible top 10 team to the mix. Considering the Ole Miss AD recently played a part in canceling a series with USC , I'm guessing Notre Dame won't soon be added to their mix.

Notre Dame vs. Ole Miss Football History

Ole Miss 20 - Notre Dame 13 The Fighting Irish would go on to win the 1977 National Championship, losing only one game that season to the Rebs. 🎥 @OleMissSports | @OleMissFB pic.twitter.com/91kBuGyQ2X — Brad Logan (@BradLoganCOTE) August 9, 2022

Notre Dame and Ole Miss have met just twice ever in football with the home team winning each matchup. Ole Miss beat eventual national champion Notre Dame in Oxford back in 1977, while the Irish won the only trip Ole Miss has ever taken to South Bend in 1985, 37-14. As much as I'd like to have a reason to spend a weekend on the Ole Miss campus, the only chance I have with Notre Dame likely being any part of it would have to come in a College Football Playoff meeting.

What 40-year-old aaron rodgers thinks about playing third game in 11 days.

After nearly a yearlong layoff due to Achilles surgery, Aaron Rodgers will play his third game in 11 days Thursday night when he faces the Patriots for the first time as a member of the Jets.

The four-time NFL MVP — and the oldest player now in the league, at 40 — has cleared various hurdles in his arduous rehab from the injury, including posting the team’s first win of the season Sunday in Week 2 over the Titans.

“Testing the body for sure. We love to play, so shorter time between games is great. But it’s definitely tough on the body, tough on the week,” Rodgers said after a walk-through practice Tuesday in Florham Park. “It’s easier for a guy who’s 20 than a guy who’s 40.

Aaron Rodgers said he is looking forward to playing his first full game at "JetLife" Stadium.

“But I’ll be ready to go Thursday night and then look forward to the three days off.”

The game not only represents the Jets home opener after splitting their first two road games in San Francisco and Tennessee, but it also will be the first game action at MetLife Stadium for Rodgers since he ruptured his left Achilles on his fourth offensive play in the season opener last September against the Bills.

“I feel good about it. It’s been a long time since I took the field at JetLife, so it’ll be a lot of emotions for sure,” Rodgers said. “But thankfully we’re already into the third game of the season. We’ve played two full games.

“My body feels good, about as good as it can. It’ll be fun to be out there with the crowd. I love night games, so I’m excited about it. Nobody’s really crazy about Thursday games, but everybody loves the weekend after the Thursday games.”

Aaron Rodgers talks with reporters on Sept. 17, 2024.

Before he was injured, Rodgers hyped the Meadowlands crowd before his first home game by running onto the field holding an American flag as part of a Sept. 11 tribute.

Asked if he had anything special planned for Thursday night, Rodgers replied, “The flag thing was spur of the moment. Didn’t think about it at all. Somebody just grabbed me a flag, and I said, ‘OK, run with this thing.’ I’m sure there will be some stuff, and whatever happens, happens.”

With Rodgers sidelined, the Jets at least finally broke a 15-game losing streak against the Pats with a 17-3 win in the regular-season finale at Gillette Stadium in January.

Notably, legendary coach Bill Belichick is no longer on the New England sideline. He was replaced by former Pats linebacker Jerod Mayo, who has split his first two games as a head coach.

“They’ve played pretty good the two weeks, gave up 10 and 23 [points in the two games],” Rodgers said. “They’re a typical Patriot defense, play really sound football, smart. They have a lot of techniques you don’t see across other teams.

Aaron Rodgers, getting sacked by Kenneth Murray Jr. during the Jets' win over the Titans, will have to play three games in 11 days.

“It’s really a smart, stout, solid defense front to back.”

The Jets have scored three touchdowns in each of their first two games, but Rodgers believes the offense needs to be “a little sharper,” get off to a “faster start” and increase its “number of plays” after he averaged 171.5 passing yards in the 1-1 start.

Rodgers added that he’s thinking only in those terms, and not concerned about controlling his emotions or immediately “putting a stamp” on the AFC East rivalry.

“There will be emotion this week, as there always is during the anthem, and seeing our crowd, night game, the excitement driving up to the stadium and seeing the tailgate happening,” Rodgers said. “There’s always emotion. If you love the game, there’s always emotion.”

Aaron Rodgers said he is looking forward to playing his first full game at "JetLife" Stadium.
