Today, where the objective of education has been understood to develop qualities of successful citizenship and sociability in child, at the same place, school discipline is meant internal and external discipline which should develop physical, mental, social and ethical values.

Modern concept of discipline is one in which self-discipline and social disciplines are stressed especially or particularly. The great educationist John Dewey has influenced sufficiently. He says that according to maximum modem thoughts, the meaning of discipline is to prepare children for life in democratic society, to provide help to man in achieving knowledge, strength, habits, interest and ideas which are envisaged for the up-gradation of self, his companies and whole of the society.

Importance of Discipline:

Discipline is very much important in life. In absence of it man cannot utilize powers properly given by nature (God). Through discipline only man can attain power and by this power he becomes capable of developing of his natural tendencies with personal view point. Along with it, discipline is also very much important from social view point. The great philosopher, Aristotle said, “A nation is not built by mountains and trees, for withstanding it is built by character of its citizens”.

This statement is completely true. When the citizens of some country would be disciplined they would be capable of taking their country on the path of progress. A disciplined person is of good character, and pious by mind, words and actions. In this way, it is clear that for nation or entire society discipline is very important. This fact can be made clear with the help of history also.

The history is witnessed to the time, when some country becomes prey of indiscipline; it had to accept slavery of external powers. Through discipline, a man and entire society or nation get alert. In want of it, this power perishes which results severe consequences. In this way, what a man, what a nation and what a society, personality of all is made by the great by discipline.

Discipline in Educational Institution:

Discipline in schools generally means, “Orders and system in doing things, regularity and obedience to commands.” But discipline is not synonymous with class order. It should be identified with orderly behaviour in the classroom and other forms of school activities. Outward show of order can also be maintained by force of fear. That is not real discipline. Real discipline implies persuasion while order implies compulsion.

It is therefore important that school discipline or discipline in the educational institution should be there for a gradual building up of habits, self-control and co-operation and carried out pupils, not because it is imposed from above, but because of the recognition by its necessity and value. So, discipline in educational institution or school should imply the cultivation of certain desirable attitudes, habits and values in pupils.

Components of Discipline:

Some of the most important components of discipline which are used in educational institutions are as follows:

The foundation of discipline is deeply rooted in the total school programme and classroom situation.

It has a set of components, t hese are as follows:

(i) Head of the Institution:

The success or failure of any educational institution depends upon the personality of the head of that educational institution. He must possess some philosophy of discipline. He must have some well grounded fundamental principles which guide him to his treat the teachers and students.

(ii) The Teacher:

The teacher is the fountain head of discipline and character formation. With good teachers, half the problem of school discipline disappears. Besides, his cleverness and originality, every teacher should be a good disciplinarian himself. This will depend on his keen insight, patience, sympathy, love, justice and impartiality.

(iii) Co-curricular Activities:

Sports, Scouting, N.C.C., Social Service and community activities of the type, develop in students a sense of self-control and self-confidence, which is the cornerstone of discipline. Such activities give our students practical lessons on the basis of their will. Social co-operation, respect for authority and leadership training can pave the right way of instructing them in the fundamentals of true discipline.

(iv) Building up Traditions:

It is already known to every-body that the higher and nobler the traditions built-up by a school, the greater the efforts on the part of students and teachers to maintain those traditions. Traditions are transmitted from one generation of students to the other and as such, if properly guided, students would never try to lower the noble traditions built by those who have gone before them.

(v) Teaching Methods:

If appropriate methods of teaching are employed, the chances of students getting in-disciplined or going astray, will be few and far between. Classroom methods should be directed towards producing well-adjusted and self-disciplined individuals and towards the building up of a high morale.

(vi) Self-Government in Schools:

In every secondary school, students should be properly associated with the administration of discipline as well as with the health, sports, dramatics and other school activities. Such an association will make them obedient to rules and regulations far more real, meaningful and willing than when the same is imposed from above.

(vii) A Good School Environment:

Every educational institution or school should prepare its calendar in the beginning of new educational session, giving a clear idea of the aims, the courses of study, administrative rules and regulations, as well as the plans of curricular and co-curricular activities of the institution,

(viii) Judicious use of Rewards and Punishments:

Meritorious and successful efforts on the part of students, must be recognized and rewarded. But rewards must not encourage unhealthy competition among students. These should be very few and administered, in a manner that may appeal to the higher motive of students.

(ix) Effective Team-Workers:

A sense of unity, co-operation and fellow feeling, prevailing among the school staff is sure to reflect upon the pupils. The young pupils in schools watch very minutely the activities of their teachers and try to imitate them for good or bad, as the case may be. It is therefore necessary that in order to promote discipline among pupils, it must first be established and maintained among the members of school-staff.

Principles for Maintaining Discipline:

(1) The base of discipline should be love, trust and goodwill as fear or doubt based discipline is quite temporary or momentary. For maintaining true discipline, there should be love for each other among school authorities like principal, teachers and students. Love originates trust and sets the foundation of discipline.

(2) Good discipline should be based on co-operation. It is most essential to keep and maintain co-operation between principal and teachers, teachers and lady teachers, teachers and pupils, teachers and guardians and students and students. If there would be no co-operation it would be very difficult to maintain good discipline. For this we have to establish rapport among all necessarily.

(3) For maintaining discipline, punishment should not be used. If someone does not leave his bad habits in any way only then its use would be necessary. If punishment is used again and again, it may create various kinds of complexes in the mind of pupils. Due to this their personality might be imbalanced. Hence, punishment should not be used as far as possible.

(4) The entire climate of school should be made beautiful and coordinating. This responsibility should not be borne by teachers and authorities alone. Rather for creating this type of atmosphere the students, guardians and whole of the society will have to take responsibility.

(5) Various creative activities should be given place in the school or educational institution, so that, children may derive mental and emotional satisfaction by doing the various activities according to their interests. For this there will be no possibility of creating problems of indiscipline.

(6) The children should be imparted knowledge about the importance of discipline. For this, only discourses are not enough through the examples of the various great persons. Rather the knowledge regarding this should be imparted to the children and the principal himself and teachers should produce their examples before them.

(7) Sufficient liberty and facilities should be given to the students and teachers for doing their duties in the educational institution or in the school.

(8) The guardians should be encouraged for making family life beautiful and comfortable as the child passes most of his time in home. If the family life is not appropriate rather it is contaminated, there would be possibility of failure of good efforts of school. Thus, through various means, the guardians should be motivated for making their family life healthy and adaptable.

Consequences of indiscipline at school and at home were severe such that children opted to be in their best behaviour. Teachers have a hard task in shaping the behaviour of children and they had to be “bad cops” every time in order to ensure discipline of students. In professional lives, discipline and code of conduct for employees is controlled by leaders and managers. It is really hectic when it comes to discipline in adults because the forms of punishment as consequences of indiscipline are hard to apply on people you respect especially those who are older than you. As a manager, it is important that discipline is maintained.

Types of Discipline:

There are three types of discipline based on behaviour modification. These types of discipline are aimed at correcting misbehavior. Misbehavior is any behaviour that is inappropriate according to the guidelines for behaviour that are set for a specific area.

The first type of discipline is preventive discipline. This type of discipline focuses on preventing certain type of behaviour from being displayed by the subjects. Challenges Facing Discipline Management:

Management of discipline is affected by factors which challenge the process. One factor is the lack of effective communication. It would be inappropriate to discipline the subject because they had no idea it was a wrong thing to do. In order for discipline to be effective, clear communication of the required behaviour should be communicated.

Lack of respect to authority. As time goes by, we realize that respect diminishes especially in schools. In the olden times, teachers received utmost respect from the students, some were even feared. Nowadays, respect has deteriorated and most of the teachers are young. Discipline management in situations where leaders are not respected is sort of impossible.

Economic difficulties also contribute to ineffective discipline managements. Due to increase in population, management of discipline is hard because misbehavior incidences increase due to poverty and discipline management is compromised through these economic hardships. There are also less resources to use in discipline management.

Disruptive behavior of the leader causes ineffective discipline management. Disruptive behaviour of leaders is in the form of lack of interest in the activities of the subjects and the lack of commitment in improving the behaviour of their subjects. Leadership and management roles involve disciplining but that cannot be possible in situations where the leaders and managers lack interest in their subordinates. Leaders and managers should always take part in improving the behaviors and personalities of their subjects so that working with them become easier.

The more effective adult caregivers are at encouraging appropriate child behavior, the less time and effort they will spend correcting misbehavior. Family specialists agree that using physical force, threats and put-downs can interfere with a child's healthy development.

Family specialists also agree that there is no perfect formula that answers all questions about discipline. Children are as unique as the families they belong to. A discipline strategy that works with one child may not work with another.

Effective guidance and discipline focus on the development of the child. They also preserve the child's self-esteem and dignity. Actions that insult or belittle are likely to cause children to view their parents and other caregivers negatively, which can inhibit learning and teach the child to be unkind to others. Acknowledging a child's efforts and progress, no matter how slow or small, encourages healthy development.

Teaching children self-discipline is a demanding task. It requires patience, thoughtful attention, cooperation and a good understanding of the child. If parents understand why their children misbehave, they can be more successful at reducing behavioral problems. These reasons for misbehavior may help parents develop a better understanding of their children:

  • Testing whether caregivers will enforce rules

  • If you are not being realistic, re-evaluate your expectations.
  • If your expectations are fair, go to the next question.
  • If your child did not realize they were doing something wrong, help them understand what you expect them to do and how they can do that. Offer to help.

If the behavior was an accident, like wetting their pants while sleeping, it was not a misbehavior. Remembering how it felt to be a child can help you understand children and relate to their behavior.

Responding to misbehavior

Here are five strategies parents and other caregivers can use to respond to child misbehavior. Rules should be fully explained and clearly understood before misbehavior occurs. Whenever possible, involve children in making the rules for the family or the classroom.

Natural consequences

Allowing children to experience the consequences of their behavior is also called learning the hard way. For example, Gena does not put her books back in her school bag after she finishes reading. One day she loses a book, and therefore must find a way to replace it.

Only use natural consequences when they will not endanger the child's health or safety.

Logical consequences

These are structured consequences that follow specific misbehaviors. The child should be able to see how the behavior and the consequence are directly related.

For example, Andrew, who is a teenager, knows that if he stays out past his curfew on a school night, his parents will not allow him to go out with his friends over the weekend.

If children damage something, they need to help fix it or clean it up. If they cause someone distress, they should help relieve it.

For example, "Now that you made your brother cry, please come apologize and help me soothe him."

During time out, children are required to spend time alone in a specific place that has few, if any, rewarding characteristics. This strategy gives children a chance to reflect quietly on their behavior away from others. When giving a time out, be calm and firm. One minute for each year of the child's age is appropriate.

For example, "Hannah, we have talked often about how hitting is not acceptable. But because you hit Jerry, please leave the playground and go to the Time Out Table for five minutes. Please think about how Jerry might have felt when you hit him."

Redirection

This strategy can work when you notice a child not following the rules and being uncooperative. Quickly get the child's attention and introduce another activity.

For example, "Tom, please help me water the flowers now. You've been riding the bike for a long time and now it's Lena's turn."

Parenting styles

Researchers have described four general styles of parenting: authoritarian, permissive, neglectful and authoritative. Most parents do not fall neatly in one category, but somewhere in the middle with characteristics of more than one style. Also, some parents change styles depending on experience, age, maturity level and the situation.

A caregiver who is authoritarian

  • Values obedience, tradition and order
  • May use physical punishment
  • Usually doesn't allow choices or freedom of expression

Possible outcomes Children of authoritarian parents might become followers and depend on others for making decisions. They may develop low self-esteem, become aggressive or defiant.

A caregiver who is permissive

  • Sets few rules and guidelines
  • Does not provide structure
  • Does not enforce limits when they are established

Possible outcomes Children of permissive parents may have low self-control and handle frustration poorly. They may remain immature and have difficulty accepting responsibility.

A caregiver who is neglectful

  • Rejects or ignores the child
  • Does not get involved in the child's life
  • Allows the child to do as they please

Possible ocutomes Children of neglectful parents may face many challenges, including difficulties with skill development, trust and self-esteem.

A caregiver who is authoritative

  • Sets appropriate rules and guidelines
  • Is firm, consistent and fair
  • Has reasonable expectations
  • Encourages child's independence and individuality
  • Uses clear communication and reasoning
  • Allows choices and empowers the child

Possible outcomes Children of authoritative parents are likely to be responsible, independent, have high self-esteem and able to control their aggressive impulses. This style of parenting provides a balance between setting appropriate limits and granting the child independence, as well as providing warmth and supportive guidance.

However, parenting is not the only factor influencing child outcomes. Cultural values, peer behavior, family circumstances and community characteristics all affect the development of children. These factors also influence the style of parenting that is used. For example, authoritative parenting is more effective in some contexts and for some groups than others.

Knowing what to expect from a child

At times, adult expectations may be beyond children's abilities. Discipline and guidance strategies should take into account a child's unique needs and developmental level.

Birth to about age 2

Children need support, contact and loving interactions. If the caregiver is absent, the child may fear that they will not return. At this stage, children build attachments with caregivers. They learn to trust that adults will be there for them when they need them. During these years, children learn through their senses and physical activities.

Age 2 to about 6

Children learn language, some reading and many social skills. They also begin to struggle for more independence from caregivers. If such efforts are understood and encouraged, children begin to take more initiative. During these years, children learn by exploring, pounding, touching, mixing, moving and throwing objects, and asking many questions.

Age 6 to about 12

Children begin to act with increasing self-control. During these years, they begin to lay the groundwork for becoming productive members of society. They process information and can make complex decisions. They are able to follow rules and accept responsibility. They also develop a self-image based on their experiences and feedback they receive from significant adults. If this feedback is positive, children grow to become confident and successful teens. If it is frequently negative, children can grow to feel inadequate and inferior.

Learning about your child

Your child is unique. To interact with them effectively, take time to learn about their special qualities. Observe them in various settings and jot down your responses in the space below.

How does my child get my attention?

What are the things my child loves?

What special challenges does my child face?

What are my child's special strengths?

What do I appreciate about my child?

Talk directly with your children about their feelings and daily life experiences. Through frequent and positive interaction, the parent-child relationship is strengthened.

Nurturing your child

According to numerous studies, nurturance in raising children is an important quality. A nurturing adult is warm, understanding and supportive. Researchers have found that a child will learn more easily from a nurturing parent than from a harsh one. Children who are raised by nurturing parents are also less likely to become delinquent than those raised by rejecting parents. Here are some examples of nurturing messages to give children:

  • You are valued as a person.
  • I believe in you.
  • I trust you.
  • I know you can handle life situations.
  • You are listened to.
  • You are cared for.
  • You are important to me.
  • I am pleased with you.
  • I love you.
  • You can tell me anything.
  • It's OK to make mistakes.
  • You belong.
  • I am learning with you.

More help for parents

Consider taking a class, attending a workshop, reading a book, subscribing to a parenting magazine, accessing Internet resources or talking with other caregivers to learn more about children. To develop a sense of connectedness, consider forming or joining a support group. Support groups are a great way to share ideas, learn with others and possibly trade child-care.

As you care for children, remember that caring for yourself is just as important. Rest, nutrition, exercise and relaxation can help make caring for children more enjoyable. Parenting and child-care will always be challenging, no matter how well prepared you are. However, helping your children achieve self-discipline is worth your effort. It is a major foundation for their lifelong personal and social development.

Introduction

Discipline is the deliberate, or lack of, action to regulate behaviour. It is the practice of frank and strict adherence to legislation and guidelines, and cultural standards and values; the ability to control oneself or other people, even in challenging circumstances. Discipline means teaching acceptable behaviours and unlearning maladaptive behaviours with support, guidance and direction in managing behaviour. It is about setting limits, clarifying roles, responsibilities, and mutual expectations and creating a predictable, orderly and stable life.

In line with the famous quote, “choices have consequences”, not observing or practicing discipline should result in some form of corrective measures. Situations abound where, unfortunately, such a ‘correction’ results from a serious trigger with devastating consequences. An example is the global Coronavirus – technically referred to as COVID-19 – that has evolved into a pandemic in less than four months, causing untold suffering, and death, worldwide. Lack of individual discipline, including observing simple instructions like washing hands thoroughly with soap, keeping a one-to-two-meter social distance, and going into self-quarantine for 14 days, is exacerbating the exponential spread of the pandemic.

In the learning environment, indiscipline can manifest itself in disobeying set rules, bullying, truancy, lateness to school, cultism, alcohol and drug abuse, insulting/assaulting, sexual harassment, stealing, rioting, striking, setting school fires, ‘gassing of learners, and many other anti-social vices. If allowed to continue, such indiscipline manifests itself later in life. In contrast, inculcating discipline at an early age helps to bring order in the different facets of a person’s life – you just need to look at our security or military forces’. 

Significance of discipline in homes and learning institutions

Discipline impacts the learning process by creating a stress-free environment for apportioning time to various activities, improves planning through observing and maintaining a set daily routine, moulds learner character and enhances their motivation, enables the setting of good examples and positively contributes to better grades. Elements such as test anxiety, environment, motivation, and emotions require consideration when developing models of academic performance. Various studies have shown a positive link between discipline in learners and their school performance, with the latter increasing with the increase in discipline levels.

Although learning institutions have a duty to enforce the rules or code of conduct guiding learner behaviour, parents also have a role to play to ensure consistency. Aspects such as dress code, hairdos, and basic manners start from home. Parents and educators, especially heads of institutions, are two pillars with a significant influence on grooming learners. Unless discipline is tackled from an early age, achieving quality education with full learner impact will remain a challenge. Thus, if learners at all levels are disciplined, they are most likely to acquire the requisite knowledge and skills with ease because they are focused and self-driven.

Despite their busy working schedules, parents should spend time with their children to discuss various issues, including discipline. There is also an increasing need to strengthen guidance and counselling in schools, to help learners attain set values. A child or young person whose social and spiritual discipline is strong has a high chance of excelling in school. The most important discipline is self-discipline, which the learner should cultivate within by setting standards and determining how far they can go amidst numerous obstacles. At the height of COVID-19, where learning has been transferred to the home as schools are closed and supervision is in the hands of parents, self-discipline will play a significant role in ensuring the continuity of learning.

Punishment and the child’s development and learning process

Punishment is used as a tool to inculcate discipline. It can be either positive or negative. Physical or corporal punishment includes caning, physical labour such as watering school gardens or cutting grass, kneeling or walking on knees, or doing push-ups. As part of enforcing the conventions on children’s rights, several countries have abolished corporal punishment in schools, although the illegal practice is still common in some schools.

Opponents of corporal punishment hold the view that it negatively impacts the child’s learning performance and general mental health. It can also push children to learn aggressive behaviour through modelling – attempting to change a child’s behaviour through inflicting pain is likely to drive the child to do the same to their peers whose actions they may want to influence. This type of punishment can also border on child abuse and may legitimize violence in children who internalize what they experience. However, proponents of corporal punishment disagree; some parents and educators see it as important in instilling discipline in children. They contend that merely removing a pleasurable or reinforcing stimulus – such as a teacher removing a misbehaving child from the class for some time or a parent ‘grounding’ a child from watching the television – is not enough in decreasing the probability of a recurrence in the child’s behaviour in the future, and that such an action can be counterproductive.

Those against corporal punishment prefer ‘positive punishment’ as it decreases the probability of a recurrence in behaviour in the future. One example is the complete elimination of rewards, also known as positive reinforcement, to discourage a repeat of misbehaviour. A third perspective is the enhancement of children’s cognitive development through social interactions, which in turn influence their learning and motivation to learn. This includes attachment to caregivers, friendship and collaborative learning between peers and forming healthy relationships between children and teachers. In such a scenario, verbal methods of discipline, including explanations and reasoning, are likely to provide more cognitive stimulus than the use of corporal punishment, which may result in poor cognitive outcomes. 

Ultimately, the effectiveness of punishment depends greatly on timing. A punishment delivered immediately after a response is likely to be most effective while the longer the delay between the response and the punishment, the greater the chance of the punishment associating with other intervening events. Positive and negative reinforcements are crucial aspects of altering behaviour after delivering punishment. 

Impact of punishment on learner performance, and alternative options

In order to analyse the relationship between punishment and learner performance, we need to be clear about the latter, which is the extent to which a learner, educator or institution has achieved their short or long-term educational goals. It is commonly measured through examinations that ascertain completion of educational benchmarks such as diplomas and bachelor’s degrees, or through continuous assessments leading to some form of grade point aggregation.

Punishment or even the threat of punishment, depending on the type, has both a positive and negative impact on learner performance. The negative impact includes fear and anxiety that distort the learning motivation (the child learns to please the teacher and not to acquire skills and knowledge), loss of interest in the subject, negative feelings against the teachers and the classes they teach, absenteeism and disengagement, aggression, reduced self-esteem, resentfulness, alcohol and drug abuse, resulting in poor school performance. A child who receives compliments for being a good learner is likely to show better academic performance than one who is punished for doing poorly. Positively, corporal punishment can help maintain classroom discipline and enable learners to develop their responsibilities if they are made to understand and appreciate their faults. Such learners may reform in the classroom, at school or at home as they strive for good behaviour and develop a responsible attitude enabling improvement in their performance.

Learner motivation and engagement is one of the six factors of academic achievement (others are instructional design quality, accuracy and alignment, data forms and quality, whole literacy, and depth of knowledge). Helping learners to develop intrinsic motivation through self-effort in mastering educational content is key. A motivated learner with little or no technology experience and limited resources is likely to perform much better than a non-motivated one in a ‘21st-century classroom.’ Positive discipline helps to improve learner motivation through teaching rather than punishing and, as a result, helps learners to succeed and thrive in school.

Positive discipline allows students to learn and adapt their behaviours to meet expectations in the classroom, while simultaneously teaching them how to make better choices in adulthood. The choices include taking time to reflect deeply about self and life, in order to be grounded on an issue. It provides an opportunity to seek the silver lining during tough or challenging situations, appreciate and embrace the bigger picture and seize opportunities in times of hopelessness with great humility. The distinction of adult behaviour in those who are disciplined is visible. In the case of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the disciplined adults are not the ones sneaking out to visit friends or participating in large gatherings, including entertainment joints, contrary to the from the authorities. The disciplined person observes the rules outlined by the authorities and can have a deeper appreciation of the pandemic as an opportunity for reflection in terms of caring for one other and looking out for each other, because “I am because you are” – this is the spirit of  Ubuntu .

Some of the alternative ways of enforcing positive discipline include the following:

  • Learning ‘to be’  – taking the learners through the process of self-knowledge and motivating them to see the importance of acquiring the necessary skills and attitudes to improve their personality. Making them more aware of themselves and others. Ensuring learners appreciate that they have a right to be heard and their views considered when important decisions are taken.
  • Taking away privileges that seem to be the cause of poor performance  – such as watching TV, visiting friends or receiving pocket money; coaching by reinforcing positive attitudes through praise and recognition; using behaviour management techniques to promote social classroom interaction among students; and using positive reinforcement techniques that reward appropriate behaviour and promote self-management through counselling.
  • Time out  – which involves removing the child from the situation to give time for reflection about the consequences of the offending behaviour. Time out entails non-exclusion (the learner can observe, but not participate in, ongoing classroom activities), exclusion (the learner is excluded from participating in, and observing, ongoing classroom activities without removing them from the classroom) and isolation (placing the learner in a separate area for a predetermined period). To be effective, time out must be consistent and should not last long.
  • Positive reinforcement  – through appreciating excellence in performance. Positive, non-violent discipline sends the message that conflict can be resolved without undermining respect.

Good school discipline depends not only on non-violent responses to poor learner behaviour, but also on skilled and properly trained teachers.

What factors can schools consider in disciplining learners?

In applying positive discipline, teachers and parents should take the following into account, with a focus on maintaining a safe and dignified schooling environment for learners:

  • Does the action help the child to feel a sense of connection?
  • Is the action kind and firm at the same time, and mutually respectful and encouraging?
  • Is the action geared towards a long-term effect on the child? Does it consider what the child is thinking, feeling, learning, and deciding about themselves and the world?
  • Does the action teach important social and life skills such as respect, concern for others, problem-solving, and cooperation as well as the skills to contribute to the home, school or larger community?
  • Does the action encourage the child to discover how capable they are in terms of constructive use of personal power and autonomy?

Card system – an example of positive discipline: A child who misbehaves is given a “yellow card” as a verbal warning by the teacher. If the situation persists, they are given another card and are separated from their peers. If needed, the situation is escalated to a “red card” and the child sent to the head of the school.

There is a considerable dependence of learner performance on personality and social environment. Learners possess various motivational traits in their quest to acquire education. Those with a good level of such traits use numerous learning strategies depending on the beliefs they hold: those with extrinsic motivation are more likely to use strategies that include good planning and better organization. In view of this and based on the significant role of motivation on learners, teachers must focus attention on inculcating motivation in learners to promote their self-efficacies, and strongly believe in the learners’ abilities to do well. Teachers also need to be well-prepared to effectively integrate the value system in the learner, while practising the same, and the use of diverse strategies in issuing instructions to the learners. In the final analysis, we are like a well-prepared meal with different ingredients blending well, together…we must play our part without exaggerating our individual parts or downplaying those of others.

Discipline in the school is meant to ensure there is balance and accountability within the school. Rules, regulations, and responsibilities are provided for accountability to be practiced within the school. Examples of popular rules and regulations include; being punctual for school and all classes, respecting other people’s rights and avoiding disturbing or interrupting the class, wearing the correct school uniforms, completing all the assignments, and being cooperative with teachers and the staff.

Punctuality is an essential value for one to be successful. In this case, students should ensure they are always punctual for school and classes to have the ability to plan their schedule and perform their tasks in an orderly manner rather than rushing at the last minute. It also helps students build their confidence before approaching the class for a presentation or an exam. Besides, every student is responsible for creating ample time for other students within that institution. No student is allowed to disturb fellow students who are studying by either making noise or engaging them in unnecessary activities (Rasmitadila et al., 2021). All students are equal to each other and ideally have equal rights in school. No student is allowed to make fellow students feel uncomfortable while in school.

Wearing the correct school uniform is one of the factors that boost one’s self-confidence, helps them develop the pride of belonging to a particular school, and eases the pressures of deciding what to wear while going to school. School uniform also helps enhance the students’ security since whenever they are seen wearing them, every adult feels it is their responsibility to protect them. Lastly, all students are responsible for completing all the assignments and cooperating with their teachers, fellow students, and other staff working within the school. Ideally, this makes it easy for every one of them to operate, and as a result, the students are likely to score good grades. Failure to do that, the school performance might be lower than expected.
