One of my favorite things about teaching Spanish is watching them explore the culture! From learning about Spanish-speaking countries  to learning about famous artists around the world , studying history and culture is important for your students. A great option to teach your students about culture is through their own discovery of the different topics. Check out these research projects for Spanish class!

Why Use Research Projects?

These projects are great to fit in at different points of the year with your students, at any level! Exploratory classes can complete them in English, intermediate classes could research in English and record in Spanish, and upper level classes can research and present in Spanish!

The research projects can also be a great emergency sub plan. Keep them on hand in case you’re not feeling well one day and just need something to assign to your students so they can work independently with a sub supervising them.

What are journals?

A scholarly journal is a publication released in regular instalments which contains research relating to a particular subject area. These are often referred to as periodicals or serials.

Journals are useful when you:

• are seeking information for your assignment or literature review
• need to find recently published papers on a particular topic
• want to identify important and current research in your field
• commence the ‘scoping exercise’ for your research project.

Find journals using SuperSearch

SuperSearch is a portal that provides a single search across the majority of ANU Library resources.

SuperSearch  is a great place to start searching for journal articles. Here are some tips to get you started:

• Select  Articles  under Format to search for articles only.
• Select  Journals  under Format to search for journals only.
• Click  Journal Search  from the top menu to search by title or browse by category.
• Use Advanced Search to filter by a particular date of publication, language or format.

Find print journals

If you can't find the journal you need online, you can also search for print issues. If a print journal is available, it will list the Library branch it is located in under Location.

Issues of journals published before 1990 are usually stored off-campus at the  ANU Print Repository . To access these, go to the item record and click on Print Repository  under Find in Library  and you will be prompted to fill in a request form. Make sure you are logged in!

Exploring broad topics in recent Spanish Studies scholarship is a good way to start thinking about potential topics for your essay, research paper, or project. As you explore some of the broad topics in recent scholarship, consider:

• What are the expectations around the essay, paper, or project? Are there specific geographic or temporal requirements for the assignment?
• What interests you most about some of the broad topics? What are some of the ways that they connect with your interests inside and outside of the classroom?

For the next steps of identifying and narrowing a specific topic and finding sources, start to notice: 

• How do scholars describe their topics? Do you notice key terms that repeat or that might be useful for a broader search?
• Are there specific countries or regions that are more or less represented in scholarship on a particular topic? 
• Do you notice overlap between some of the broad topics? How might you combine some of the topics to narrow or expand your own research focus?

Hispanic Studies

The senior thesis is the capstone of the major in Hispanic Studies. Typically this is a major research paper of approximately 40 pages written in Spanish, depending on the topic and treatment necessary.  Alternatively, a student may present a translation of a literary text accompanied by an analytical that clearly explicates the approach and relevance of the project in Spanish.

In researching and writing your thesis project, you will bring the knowledge and skills learned in your coursework in the Department of Hispanic Studies  to bear on the topic of your choosing. Your thesis project should be broad enough to offer a reflection of your studies in Hispanic languages, literatures, and culture s, yet concentrated enough to engage extensively and intensively with a single topic. The identification of a potential topic should begin as early as possible in order to give your ideas time to develop.

• Thesis proposal: Second Friday of the semester in which you write the thesis.
• The final draft of the thesis: The Friday of the last week of classes of the semester in which you write your thesis. Please note: no extensions will be granted without penalties.
• Identifying a Topic : From HISP 205 through the 300-level courses, and in off-campus study, you will be introduced to a variety of topics and disciplinary perspectives relevant to the study of cultural productions in the Spanish-speaking world —fundamentally literature, film, and other forms of narrative representation , as well as language. Whether you choose to do a research paper or translation, your topic and approach should showcase what you have learned as a Spanish major at Bates . Upon declaring your Spanish major, you may already have an idea of the topics(s) that interest(s) you. If not, you should think about what grabs and maintains your attention in your coursework, and consult your advisor and other faculty as early as possible. You will have to do some initial research to see if your topic is substantial enough to be the focus of a thesis.
• Selecting an Advisor : Ideally, your thesis advisor has expertise in the topic(s) you are considering. Your advisor will be your most important guide for background information on your topic, sources, and methods. Please note: your thesis advisor may not necessarily be your major academic advisor.
• A preliminary working title
• A thesis statement: This includes not only the articulation of your research question but also a brief description of how you will engage that question.
• A clear and concise outline of the materials to be analyzed (literary texts, other cultural products) or translated.
• A detailed bibliography list: Existing relevant studies and/or pertinent theories.
• Research : The most successful theses build on coursework and are planned well ahead. Theoretical approaches appropriate for your topic and a plan of action can be refined and elaborated in the process of writing the proposal. Ideally, this should take place the semester prior to the one in which you intend to write so that you have enough time to build your knowledge, test your ideas, and frame your topic as an argument.
• Follow the latest edition of the MLA Handbook
• You are writing in Spanish, so you need to be doubly aware of grammar and syntax.  Always revise before submitting written materials.
• Final Submission : You will submit your final thesis to your advisor who will evaluate and assign a grade. Senior theses are due on Friday of the last week of classes during the semester in which you choose to write.

Your thesis will be evaluated in terms of the following criteria: Eighty percent (80%) of the thesis grade will be based on the final product, and 20%, on the process: the amount of work put into developing the topic or identifying the text to be translated, ability to meet deadlines and effort to make noticeable improvements to structure, style, and grammar patterns through revision and editing.

Background Information

Background sources are beneficial at the beginning stages of your research process. Encyclopedias, dictionaries, and even Wikipedia are traditional background sources we usually do not cite in our final project. These sources will give us ideas for research topics and keywords related to your topic and even provide further information that may be useful.

For Example

A bilingual Internet search using the search terms el franquismo.edu   will give you results from websites connected to educational institutions in the US, Spain, and elsewhere.

Top Level Domain

The top-level domain name .edu connects you with institutions related to education in the U.S. and other countries. The Google search image above shows a link to a resource associated with The University of Kansas and a book review published by Duke University Press. Even the YouTube link "El franquismo"' is connected to a video narrated by Spanish historian Enrique Moradiellos, Professor of Contemporary History at the Universidad de Extremadura.

Corroborating What You Found

Note that you still need to check what you found. So, I looked for Professor Moradiellos to corroborate that he is, in fact, a faculty member at the Universidad de Extremadura.

Your background search could extend to other countries

Let us look at Spain using the top-level domain for an institution (the government of Spain) and the country code, in this case,  gob.es . In this search, you should find some links to pages connected to the government of Spain about ''el franquismo."

Your initial background search should have given you some keywords you can use in searches. This is an example taken from the topic el franquismo .

When you find a book or article of interest in the Library catalog, you may look at its bibliographic record and subject terms. The Library of Congress creates subject terms, which are usually linked to additional resources on the topic. When you use subject terms in your searches, you expand your search.

There are several places to find Spanish- or Portuguese-language scholarly articles. Teacher training programs and models recognize research engagement as a key competency of qualified professionals. However, despite current calls from scholars to bridge the divide between research and practice in second language teaching, little is known about how teaching professionals engage with existing research or carry out their own research. This study is the first to address this issue with regards to Spanish Language Teaching (SLT) professionals, aiming to understand if and how they engage with and in research, and identify what they would need to increase their engagement. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of online survey responses from 1,675 SLT professionals from 84 countries show that research engagement is dependent on the job description. Coding of free-text responses into eight themes (motivation, prestige, support, training, professionalization, resources, community, and research areas) reveals that the main barrier to greater research engagement is lack of support. Our results contribute to the understanding of the concepts of research engagement and research culture within the context of SLT and inform future initiatives to strengthen the research-practice nexus.

Spanish Class Research Paper Topics

What the Byzantine Empire & Islam Have in Common

Research papers are a good learning -- and testing -- activity for a Spanish class. Writing a research paper gives the students a practical and creative way to use the language -- each sentence poses a new creative problem to solve. Spain is such a rich and colorful country that writing projects that match a wide variety of interests are easy to find--and Spanish is also spoken in many other countries.

Countries Other Than Spain

There are a lot of countries other than Spain where Spanish is spoken. The differences in how Spanish is spoken in various countries supply materials for dozens of essays. For one thing, the "z" is pronounced "th" in Spain and nowhere else. There is a legend that this is due to a Spanish king who lisped, but some scholars disagree. It is true that this sometimes causes confusion for words like "casa"-- house -- and "caza"-- hunt. There are also dialect differences in the way Spanish is spoken in different South American countries that is a source for some amusing anecdotes.

Regional Histories

The regions of Spain almost seem like different countries--each could be the subject of a Spanish class research paper. Andalusia is famous for flamenco, but also as an agricultural region and the home of Moorish monuments like the Alhambra. Catalan is the home of the Architect Antonio Gaudi -- and his unique style can be seen everywhere. It also has its own language and music. In the north of Spain is the mountainous region of the Basque. This region also has its own language and characteristic cuisine, which is completely different from the rest of Spain.

Famous Spaniards

Spain has produced famous people in all human endeavors: explorers, artists, musicians and scientists. Some of the most famous explorers of the New World were Spanish, including Cortez, Coronado, De Soto and Ponce de Leon. Many other famous explorers sailed from Spain, including Balboa, Magellan, Columbus and Vespucci. Some of the most famous painters in the world came from Spain, including Picasso, Diego Rivera, Goya, Velazquez and Salvador Dali. Foremost among Spanish scientists is Santiago Ramon y Cajal -- the Nobel Prize Winner who first identified the fundamental cellular structure of the brain. Each and every one of these famous individuals could be the subject of an engaging research paper.

Spanish Food

Spain is an agricultural region -- south of France and with a warmer climate. It is one of the major suppliers of fruits and vegetables to Europe. Like France, it has a rich and complex culinary tradition, ripe for a paper to be written that includes recipes and the history behind them. The only Spanish dishes known to most people are Piaia and horchata, but there are a rich array of meat and seafood dishes that are famous all over Europe. There are also recipes like Sangria (red wine, sugar and citrus fruits) that are enjoyed -- especially in Latin cultures -- all over the globe.
