IELTS Writing Task 2: Music Essay (Band 9)

Here’s my band 9 sample answer for the question below.

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

1. Sample Band 9

It is often said that music has the power to unite and connect people, regardless of their cultural backgrounds or ages. I completely agree with this view, and will give my reasons below.

Music can certainly reach across cultural and national boundaries and bring people together. Perhaps the best example of this would be the Live Aid concerts that took place back in the 1980s, and which were broadcast to a global audience. Two live events were held simultaneously in the UK and the US, and the objective was to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. The concerts were a huge success, both in terms of the number of people around the world who watched them and their impact on international public awareness of the famine. They demonstrated, I believe, that music truly is the planet’s global language.

Just as it transcends cultures, music also has the ability to connect people from different generations. Regardless of age, we can all enjoy a memorable melody, a strong rhythm or a beautiful singing voice, and the best songs seem to have the same magical effect on all of us. This would explain why televised music competitions, such as ‘The X Factor’ or ‘The Voice’, are such popular prime-time shows. These programmes attract incredibly broad audiences because singing and popular songs appeal to children, parents and grandparents alike. I would argue that no other form of entertainment can bring families together in this way.

In conclusion, I believe that music is unique in its capacity to create shared experiences between people, irrespective of culture and age.

(265 words)

2. Sample Band 9

Many believe that music is an effective means of strengthening the bond between people from different cultural backgrounds and generations. From my perspective, I wholeheartedly agree with this point of view.

To begin with, music has an exceptional ability to  evoke a wide range of feelings  of the listeners such as sadness, anger, and happiness regardless of their country of origin. Although it is true that the lyrics of a song might be  incomprehensible  due to the language barrier, its melody is  linguistically neutral . In fact, in order to feel the melody of a song, the listener does not need to fully understand the language in which the song is written. For example, a Vietnamese may fall in love with a Korean pop song or a Japanese may shed tears while listening to a  melancholic piece of music  written by an American musician. This is a clear evidence that shows music is a universal language that  transcends  all cultural boundaries.

In addition, music is a  common ground  for people to understand each other better  irrespective  of their age. Nowadays, it is not surprising to see young individuals are fond of the  nostalgic feel  of a song released years ago, and likewise, modern music genres such as hip-hop, rap, and techno are also becoming increasingly popular amongst older people. For instance, it is commonplace to see a family of different generations gathered together in a karaoke room, singing and dancing to the same song with much joy.

In conclusion, music is an important part of people’s lives and it can also act as a powerful means of  uniting  people of different cultures and ages

IELTS Music Essay: A Complex Essay Question

In this lesson we’ll look at an  IELTS music essay  in order to explain how to approach a more complex IELTS task 2 question.

Many questions have a clear  task . For example, the task may clearly state that you need to agree or disagree, offer solutions to a problem, or give the reasons why a problem exists.

Some though may have more general questions. Take a look at the example below:

There are many types of music in the world today.

Why do we need music?

Is the traditional music of a country more important and should it be preserved or is international music that is heard everywhere nowadays more useful to a society?

This is quite complex - the IELTS music essay question is long and ‘music’ is quite an abstract topic.

Understanding the Question

When you get a more complex IELTS task 2 question like this you should make sure you underline important words and carefully break it down into its different parts.

This will make sure that you do not miss something when you answer the question.

When you have done this, you should hopefully end up with something like this:

  • Why is traditional music important?
  • Should it be preserved?
  • Why is international music important?
  • Which is the most important?

You need to discuss all these things as they are all within the IELTS music essay question. If you address all of these points then you will be fully answering the question .

These kinds of question are usually asking your opinion in some way, and this question is no exception.

All of the points listed are asking for your opinion, but most importantly you MUST make it clear which type of music, traditional or international, you think is more important/useful (if indeed you do think one is more important than the other - you may think they are equally important).

Planning and Organizing your Answer

You can use these questions to brainstorm and plan your answer.

With a question like this there is no ‘fixed’ way to organize it. There could be many different ways. But you must ensure that, as always, it is logical and covers everything .

One clear way would be to discuss why we need music first, then go on to discuss/compare the relative importance of traditional and international music, ensuring that you finish by stating your opinion (or re stating your opinion if you already gave it in your introduction).

Now, take a look at the IELTS music essay model answer.

IELTS Music Essay Model Answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Music exists in some form or another in every culture around the world and it provides enjoyment to millions of people. However, some people are concerned that traditional music is being lost because of the popularity of international music.

Without a doubt, music is a necessity. Firstly, music is important as it provides enjoyment and pleasure in daily life. People listen to music to relax at home, to relieve the boredom of long journeys, and to dance to in the evening at clubs. Not only this, music is also an expression of culture, often being an essential part of religious ceremonies such as weddings and funerals or yearly festivals. It is also now common in educational development as children learn to play music at school.

In considering which kind of music is the most important, international music is certainly useful to society because it can be argued that it helps us to understand and relate to other people, cultures and countries as we all listen to the same songs. This has occurred as globalization means Western music is heard around the world. However, it is critical that this is not at the expense of traditional music. It should be a priority to preserve this since it teaches people about their history, and helps societies remember and retain their national and cultural identity.

To conclude, I would argue that one type of music is not more important or useful than another. Traditional music is vital and should be preserved as it is part of a country’s cultural identity, but both are needed as they provide enjoyment to people in different ways.

(270 words)

As you can see, the IELTS music essay answer is 270 words.

There is a lot more you could have written about this topic and I could have made the answer longer, but this is to show you that you can address quite a few points in a short space.

If you are a good writer and you can write more then that is fine, but most people cannot write much more if they have to brainstorm, plan and check their grammar as well as write the answer.

The question has quite a few points to discuss and they are all within the essay.

Band 7 Sample Answer for Writing Task 2 Question – Why is Music Important for Many People

Most people find music to be highly important. There are other factors that account for this love of music.

Firstly, music is popular as it is universal. Anyone who can hear sound can listen to and understand music. It helps people connect artistically through music. For example, in music festivals, individuals from various backgrounds and different corners of the world meet and unite through music, irrespective of language barriers. Secondly, music has the power to evoke memories, sentiments, and emotions in listeners. For example, a sad musical passage may occasionally bring up memories of challenging circumstances in your life.

Also, everybody can listen to music, regardless of their financial situation, because we can sing or make pleasant noises with a simple hand clap or use objects from daily life like spoons or glass tumblers, etc. Lastly, in today’s fast-paced world, music provides an effective means of stress relief. It brings about joy and helps to let go of the tension. Pharell Williams’ new song, “Happy”, is a prime example, as this song greatly benefits people throughout the world. As a result, a few days following the song’s release, many videos featuring people laughing and dancing can be found on YouTube!

Thus, music plays a significant role in our lives as each of us uses the “power” of music for various purposes, such as emotional expression, therapeutic effect, and social relationships. (230 words)

Music holds considerable importance for many people across cultures and ages due to various reasons. Consequently, individuals, irrespective of their age, taste, nationality or preferences, enjoy music. I will elaborate on these reasons in the following paragraphs with relevant examples.

First and foremost, music provides a powerful outlet for expressing a wide range of emotions, from joy and love to sadness and anger. Adele’s “Someone Like You”, one of my favorites, is known for its ability to evoke deep emotions, providing a channel for listeners to express and connect with their feelings. In addition, listening to music has been shown to reduce stress levels and promote relaxation. It stimulates the mind and body, offering a calming escape from the pressures of daily life. For instance, piano compositions by Mozart, Bach or Beethoven are often used for relaxation.

Further, music plays a crucial role in preserving and transmitting cultural identity. Different genres and styles often reflect the traditions, history, and values of specific communities, fostering a sense of belonging and heritage. For example, traditional music, like Flamenco in Spain or Koto music in Japan, plays a vital role in conserving and conveying ethnic originality from generation to generation. Besides being a medium of self-expression and creativity, music serves as a common ground, bringing people together and creating shared memories. Shared musical experiences, such as concerts, festivals like Coachella, or even casual listening sessions with friends, contribute to social bonding.

The Question

There are many different types of music in the world today.

Why do we need music?

Is the traditional music of a country more important than the international music that is heard everywhere nowadays?

IELTS Task 2 Model Essay on Traditional Music by Andrew Turner @ EnglishWithAnExpert.com

Humans have long sought to harness the expressive power of music to convey their feelings. It is inconceivable to imagine a human civilisation without its own traditional musical instruments.   However, due to globalisation, many people fear that national and traditional music will be eroded by the international industry. I agree with this stance, and I believe that more efforts should be made to maintain the musical heritage of diverse cultural groups.

Music has played a central role in shaping people’s cultural identity. For this reason, music is deemed to be an indispensable tool, through which a sense of belonging can be developed among younger generations. An excellent example of this role is national anthems which are played at national events. Additionally, music is a repository of the collective memory of people, and this is why composers have deployed their musical prowess to narrate and record history. If we allow international music to be embedded within our culture, we will dilute our sense of belonging.

It might be argued that younger generations should be acquainted with different musical traditions to develop tolerance towards other cultures. Others think that broadening our musical horizons can enrich our traditional music by infusing it with various genres of music. I agree with these views; however, a priority should be given to local musical traditions in our national curriculum. To maintain the diversity of humanity’s musical heritage, children should be taught how to play their own inherited musical instruments.

In conclusion, over the span of our history, music has played a pivotal role in developing a sense of belonging among the young. However, the changes that are wrought by the globalised music industry can weaken our traditions and heritage. As such, greater space should be given to local music in education systems worldwide.

IELTS Essay: Music and Relaxation

This is an IELTS writing task 2 sample answer essay on the topic of music and relaxation from the real IELTS exam.

Some people think that the most important function of music is to help people relax.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Many believe that music serves primarily as a means of relaxation while others think it is more than that. I am in agreement with the former as there are other purposes for music but they can all be roughly defined as ways of relaxing.

Those who feel music is more than just relaxation point out its other stated uses. For example, many people listen to music in more active settings, such as in night clubs, and dance along. In difficult emotional periods, including after a bad breakup or the loss of a loved one, some individuals turn to music to cope or lift up their spirits. There are also those who view music as an art form no different from literature, painting, and poetry. For them, music serves the myriad purposes of artistic appreciation that include offering insights into life and the artistic expression of others.

Nonetheless, the reasons detailed above can all be generally categorised as forms of relaxation and the most common purpose of music is unadorned enjoyment. People relax in different ways and that can include dancing, connecting with music emotionally or enjoying art. The majority of people, however, simply listen to music throughout the day as a way of escaping from the pressures and demands of work and family. Studies have shown that listening to music regularly can reduce blood pressure and ease the burdens that modern life places on mental health. This is the reason why workers, students, and parents gravitate towards music, in addition to other kinds of light entertainment, at the end of a long day and explains the enduring success of the industry.

In conclusion, music is mainly for relaxation, though this takes on different variations depending on the person in question. This desire to relax is part of a shared humanity that unites all peoples.

Several individuals believe that the noticeable pivotal aim of music like jazz, classic, rock, and a host of others, is to aid relaxation, While others think that music provides more than that for people. In my opinion, I concur with the latter. This essay intends to elucidate my argument as well as give a few notable illustrations.

Listening to music can be used to provide different functions other than relaxation for individuals. However, people listen to music in many active settings like sport and night clubs. Research suggests that marathon runners who listened to fast or slow motivational music appear to run faster than those who played calm music while running. Thus, songs emerge to improve sports performances. Besides sports, many people listen to trap music in night clubs and dance along with it.

Furthermore, In a hurdle or downtimes as a consequence of an unpredictable breakup between lovers, people turn to music to uplift their mood. Moreover, some people turn to music for concentration, especially when heeding to the type of song the defined individual finds intriguing. Therefore, music plays other crucial roles rather than relaxation for its victims. In conclusion, albeit music also supports relaxation, like mitigating anxiety and insomnia by calming the stressed nerves and hormones of a person, I believe that music provides other significant roles like assisting to improve sports performance, concentration, and uplifting individuals’ moods when faced with vile occasions. In addition, it all depends on the reason why a person is heeding to a piece of music as well as the choice of song

Band 5+: Music play an important role in society, others think it is simply a form of entertainment for individuals. Discuss both views and give your opinion Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Opinions are divided on whether music has a much larger impact on society or whether music is solely for entertainment purposes. While I may acknowledge the reasons behind the latter view, I still firmly support the former.

Those who believe that one of the forms of satisfaction is music may have several arguments. From their perspective, trendy music type just provides enjoyment and does not benefit anything else. This can be explained by the fact that nowadays, Tiktok users usually use some catchy choruses, which are the most special sound of any trendy music regardless of that music’s type, for dancing with their friends or enjoying that moment while they do not listen entirely those musics. In addition, background music or instrumental music are the genres of soft music helping individuals to feel more relaxed and reduce their stress and anxiety because of their soothing melodies. Therefore, there is no doubt that that is why music just entertains them in a short time.

Nevertheless, I still hold the belief that music holds a huge of social values for several reasons. Chief among these is the economic value. For instance, BornPink World Tour by BLACKPINK band, is the first tour by a girl group to gross over $200 million in history. This tour appeals a huge of young fanbase, mostly from who really rich. In particular, in order to support their idols, fanbase should pay a large amount of money to pay concert tickets as well as to purchase their lightsticks or albums, so their revenues after the tour not only contribute to their entertainment company but also boost the tourism industry of country hosting that tour. Another greater benefit of music come from to the folk-inspired music, which the type is Pop or EDM mixing with traditional music. The initial purpose of this music genre was to bridge the generation gap. However, over time, many listeners have come to appreciate it for its vital role in preserving cultural identity. This can be seen that Hoang Thuy Linh’s music is the most outstanding example, she blends traditional Vietnamese elements with modern pop such as using melodies from traditional instruments, lyrics, costumes, and images of Vietnam’s scenic spots, as a result, she not only preserves the national culture but also promotes the image of Vietnam to the world.

Essay 22 – Is traditional music more important than International music

Gt writing task 2 (essay writing) sample # 22.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Present a written argument or case to an educated reader with no specialist knowledge of the following topic:

There are many different types of music in the world today. Why do we need music? Is the traditional music of a country more important than the international music that is heard everywhere nowadays?

You should write at least 250 words.

Use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Model Answer 1: [View: Neutral Opinion]

Music is an intrinsic part of human culture and plays a significant role in our lives. This essay aims to explore the importance of music and examine whether traditional music holds more significance than international music in today’s globalized world.

One of the primary reasons why we need music is its ability to evoke emotions and enhance our well-being. Music has a profound impact on our mood, relieving stress, and providing comfort and solace. It serves as a universal language that transcends barriers and allows individuals to connect with their inner selves and with others. Moreover, music serves as a means of cultural expression and promoting cultural identity.

The traditional music of a country carries the legacy of its people, their history, values, and customs. It serves as a cultural archive, reflecting the unique heritage of a nation and providing a sense of belonging to its citizens.

However, in today’s interconnected world, international music has become increasingly prevalent. It offers a platform for cross-cultural exchange and allows individuals to appreciate diverse musical styles and genres. International music fosters cultural understanding and promotes unity among people from different backgrounds. While traditional music holds cultural significance, it is important to recognize the value of international music in enriching our musical experiences. Global music collaborations and fusion of different styles can lead to the creation of innovative and captivating melodies that resonate with a wider audience.

In conclusion, music serves as a universal language that evokes emotions, promotes well-being, and fosters cultural expression. While traditional music is vital in preserving cultural heritage, international music has its own merits in promoting cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. Rather than viewing traditional and international music as mutually exclusive, it is essential to embrace both and celebrate the richness and diversity of musical expressions.

Model Answer 2: [Neutral opinion]

We love listening to music whether we are at home, at work or on the streets. In fact, music has become a part of our daily life whether it is traditional music or international music. Therefore it is fair to suggest that we need music because it is good for our souls, and it helps calm us down during the time of stress and anxiety besides conveying our human feeling from generation to generation. Because both “traditional music” and “international music” types enjoy a certain degree of popularity among music lovers, I am not hesitant to say that both of them are equally important for a country.

Traditional music, of course, can help understand the important elements of culture, heritage, history and the emotions of a particular country. But that does not necessarily mean that those particular “elements” always remain the same. They also go through some internal changes as time progresses, and simply because we, humans, are just not programmed to remain the same always. These changes are certainly reflected in “traditional music” as well, be it through a different kind of rhythm or a different kind of musical instrument. And, if these “changes” indeed are incorporated into the “traditional music”, they do not always remain “traditional”! Besides, who is to decide what is “traditional music” and which is ‘international music”, when many “not-so” traditional elements of international music are getting integrated into traditional music easily and rather “successfully” sometimes. For example, the “traditional tabla” (made of woods) in Bangladeshi folk songs is frequently being replaced by “metal made drums”, but it doesn’t exactly reduce the appeal and traditional value of that particular type of folklore songs in any manner.

Then, of course, there are satellite TV channels and the internet which have virtually erased the already “not-so” visible boundary line between traditional music and international music whereby we are continuously being “subject” to the music of other countries. Sometimes, we actually even like music from other countries. But in that case, it does not mean that our traditional music is becoming any less important to us.

To conclude, traditional music and international music are equally important for a country if it wants to preserve and also carry forward its traditions and cultures.

Model Answer 3: [View: traditional music is more important than the international music ]

Music is an essential cultural and traditional component of a nation and a rich variety of music could be found all around the world that not only entertains us but also expresses our joy, nationalism, freedom, happiness, love and struggles in the finest form of arts. Despite the huge popularity of international music, traditional music is still more important due to its adherence to the traditional aspects of a country.

We need music because it makes our life meaningful and accompanies us throughout our lives. In our childhood, we listen to and learn music simply as a form of entertainment and joy. We learn to sing our national anthem and our parents sing to us to help us sleep. Later in life, we come across a variety of songs and music as part of our life stories and our favourite music often defines the person we become. In our old age, we see life and recite memories through music we love. Music both expresses and arouses emotions in a way that words alone cannot, and it tells stories of our lives that we long to hear. Thus we need music to relax, be entertained, be inspired, express our feelings and often relieve boredom in life.

In considering which kind of music is the most important, we must acknowledge that traditional music teaches people about their history and helps people remember and retain their national and cultural identity. International music is often set in a totally different environment that we have no experience in and despite engaging and entertaining lyrics and music style, it is often a commercial product which fails to reflect the true stories in our life. Traditional music, by contrast, expresses the culture, tradition and history of a country and gives narratives of people and their life in a way that will be always relevant. Thus traditional music, without any doubt, is more important for us as people in a society and a country.

In conclusion, music is a crucial part of our life and existence, and I believe that traditional music should be given more importance than international music so that we can enjoy music not only for entertainment’s sake but also to learn who we really are.

Model Answer 4: [View: International music is more important than traditional music ]

In this day and age, different kinds of music genres prevail around the globe and one can find a stunning range of categories and styles according to his choice. No doubt, music is of critical importance to us for several reasons and despite conventional music nurturing nationalism, I unswervingly believe that global music is highly significant by reason of diversity.

No matter when, where and how music was invented, it has been playing a vital role in our society for a really long. Music can touch our feelings and even change them by soothing the nerves and many researchers suggest that music can invoke catharsis feelings in the listeners who have emotional stress and tension. In addition to this, music can reach the core of our minds and inspire us greatly. That is why, in nursing homes, they commence with musical therapy so as to let the old people remember the incidents of their sweet past.

International music is of considerable importance despite the fact that folk music resonates with the culture, heritage and legacy of a nation. There are myriad reasons in favour of international music. The most prominent one is solidarity. In simple words, world music brings together a diverse range of cultures and histories and thereby demonstrates different paradigms of notions, worldviews and so forth; which in turn transcend cultural differences and tear down the barriers of social class, ethnicity, national identity and so on. A case in point is the song “Wind of Change” by Scorpions, which is a rallying cry for unification and for freedom and a message of hope.

On a final note, traditional music is a strong carrier of the culture, history, and heritage of a nation. Nevertheless, global music paves the way for international unity which is crucial as the world we live in has become a global village.

One Comment to “Essay 22 – Is traditional music more important than International music”
