‘V’ movie review: Undone by predictability

The stylish action thriller has interesting face-offs between nani and sudheer babu, but ends up as old wine in a new bottle.

Nani and Sudheer Babu in ‘V’

  • Cast: Nani, Sudheer Babu, Nivetha Thomas and Aditi Rao Hydari
  • Direction: Mohana Krishna Indraganti
  • Music: Amit Trivedi, S S Thaman

V was touted as a mainstream action thriller that pays attention to rhyme and reason. It promised interesting face-offs between a cop and a killer on the loose, with whistle-worthy moments that also make sense.

The near brushes between the serial killer (let’s just call him Nani for now) and cop Aditya (Sudheer Babu) set the ball rolling. Aditya is lauded for his work as deputy commissioner of police, West Zone, Hyderabad. He also tops the ‘most desirable man’ list, walks the ramp and flaunts his six-pack abs on a men’s magazine cover. In short, he’s a media darling. The celebratory mood is soon tempered by the gruesome murder of a fellow cop. The killer leaves behind a note and challenges Aditya.

In the scene of the first murder, none of the cops show signs of shock or despair that one among them has been killed. That he is shady emerges later, but the lack of emotion with which the cops try to crack this mystery keeps us too, from being invested.

Sudheer plays the cop with a charming ease, sporting a mild smirk from time to time. Nani looks like he has enjoyed unveiling a dark character. He gets the best lines and his clash with Sudheer would have elicited whistles had this film released in theatres. Nani’s eyes have a tale of grief to share; he looks like he hasn’t laughed heartily in a long time. When he does, the morbid humour comes at the expense of co-passengers who have no idea what hit them.

All this should have ideally built up to an engaging drama as the gruesome murders continue and Sudheer unravels the answers. Instead, the film’s Achilles’ heel is exposed. V is a product of technical finesse with a story that becomes extremely predictable.

Cinematographer P G Vinda, S S Thaman’s background score and the sound design build the mood for a brooding thriller peppered with morbid humour.

The film holds attention during the near brushes between the two men, despite a few aberrations like the knife-toting parents (Rohini and ‘Thalaivasal’ Vijay) of crime writer Apoorva (Nivetha Thomas) whose presence doesn’t add to the narrative. Even Nivetha’s role is a disappointment. Hired as a criminal psychology consultant, she barely gets to do any problem solving.

The film loses steam when it pieces together the story of the killer. A brief love story works as an emotional core of the drama. But the sub-plot that emerges, based on incidents that happened in Hyderabad, brings in a feeling of deja vu. The crime is heinous but you’ve seen similar storylines in several films. The slight twist in the tale towards the end isn’t enough to salvage an old-fashioned plot.

Aditi Rao Hydari has that mix of innocence and vulnerability that suits her short role. Vennela Kishore helps lighten the drama and at one point, takes a clever jibe at comic actors who are newly signed on for big commercial films.

V could have benefited with a far more engaging story. As it stands now, it’s a pale story that doesn’t make you root for its prime characters.

V Movie Review

Release date : September 05th, 2020

123telugu.com Rating : 2.75/5

Starring : Nani, Sudheer Babu, Nivetha Thomas, Aditi Rao Hydari

Director : Mohana Krishna Indraganti

Producers : Dil Raju, Sirish, Lakshman, Harshith Reddy

Music : S. Thaman, Amit Trivedi

Cinematography : P. G. Vinda

Editor : Marthand K. Venkatesh

Post the lockdown, so many films have released on OTT platforms but today’s release, V is one of the biggest films to release in Telugu. Starring Nani and Sudheer Babu in lead roles, this film is out on Amazon Prime. Let’s see how it is.

A police officer gets killed in Hyderabad and DCP Aditya(Sudheer Babu) is brought in action to handle the case. The killer(Nani) leaves clues for Aditya and says he will commit more murders in the days to come. With this, a cat and mouse game starts where the murders keep happening and Aditya gets clueless. Who is this killer? Why is he killing everyone? What is his connection with Aditya? and where do the two heroines Nivetha and Aditi Rao feature in this setup? To know this, you need to watch the film.

Plus Points

Nani is the life and soul of the film and it is his negative act that lifts the spirits of the film. Nani does an action avatar for the first time and he is pretty good. The way he uses his unique dialogue delivery to create a negative effect is amazing. Nani has an amazing screen presence and he uses his swag in the best way possible in the film. One can say that his new avatar is the major plus of the film.

Sudheer Babu is a perfect fit in his cop’s role and showcases what he is capable of. He is the hero of the film and takes on Nani in full force. Be it his dances, emotions, or dialogue delivery, Sudheer Babu is good.

Nivetha Thomas is okay and looks glamorous in the film. She shares decent chemistry with Sudheer Babu. Aditi Rao comes in the key second part and makes her presence felt. The action sequences or you can say the murders showed are grippingly executed in the first half and raise the curiosity levels. Minus Points

The second half is where the film goes for a toss. Once it goes back into the flashback mode, things become very slow, and routine scenes are showcased at a stretch. One can easily guess that Nani is doing all this with a motto and because of this, his characterization looks weak. Both the love tracks of Nani and Sudheer Babu are very dull and executed in a pale manner.

All those who think there will be solid twists will be mistaken as the story is a routine revenge drama with a straight forward and predictable plot. Also, the starting of the film is a bit slow as the makers waste too much time to get into the actual story.

The biggest drawback is the climax of the film. After all the hype, one feels that there will be a big twist but sadly that does not happen and the film is ended on a silly note. There should have been a proper masala ending and with good scope to do that, the director does not make use of it and ends the film just like that which disappoints the audience.

Technical Aspects :

For the first time in his career, Dil Raju is producing an action film and he has gone all out with V. The production values of the film are top-notch as the visuals by PG Vinda and money spent is seen in every scene. Amit Trivedi’s music is okay but Thaman’s BGM is even better. His score for all the thrills and tense moments is superb. The stars have been designed quite stylishly and especially Nani. The lyrics for all the songs are very good and the art direction is amazing.

Coming to the director Mohanakrishna Indrganthi, he has taken a complete U-turn from his normal films and surprises with V. Even though his story is routine, the way his screenplay runs the first half was quite good. But looks like he ran out of ideas in the second half and made things routine, dull, and rushed. If he would have worked on a good twist in the end, things would have been something else.

On the whole, V is a typical revenge drama that does not live up to the hype. It is a film with routine cat and mouse set up but the two stunning heroes make things quite interesting for the audience. Nani’s surprising new avatar, Sudheer Babu’s sincere act, and the first half are major assets. But the second half becomes slow with dull narration and a silly ending. Barring this, V is a perfect OTT release that can be only given a shot for its star presence and stylish taking. The only thing you need to do is to lower your expectations while watching the film.

Producer - Raju, Sirish, Harshith Reddy

Music - Amit Trivedi

V is the first big movie to opt for OTT release as the theaters remained closed during the pandemic. There were a lot of expectations on the movie with Nani and Sudheer Babu playing the leads and a talented filmmaker Mohana Krishna at the helm. However, sadly, V turned out to be a disappointment.

What is it about?

DCP Aditya (Sudheer) is considered as the super cop by the media and public with an impeccable record. A brutal murder happens and the killer directly challenges Aditya. The killer goes on a killing spree and leaves his signature ‘V’ on every corpse. V aka Vishnu (Nani) also keeps calling Aditya from various unknown numbers and keep on challenging him by giving out the details about where the next murder would take place. Why is Vishnu killing everyone? What does Aditya find about him?

Performances:

Nani does his best to make V an engaging fare with his performance. The character is different from what he usually does, but it isn’t novel. Sudheer Babu gets as equal if not more footage as Nani and he makes sincere effort to do justice to his character. Aditi Rao Hydari appears in a guest role and Nivetha Thomas plays a character that doesn’t make any sense. Vennela Kishore, Naresh, and Tanikella Bharani are the notable actors among others.

Technicalities:

Mohana Krishna Indraganti’s movies are largely enjoyable in general. He is known for making light hearted entertainers. V is a crime thriller that is different from his previous films. V has an interesting plot, but it is poorly developed with many absurd and some downright silly scenes. Trying to present it in a commercial format backfired big time as V doesn’t even raise to the average mark at any point. Thaman’s background score is loud but captivating. Cinematography is good in action sequences. Editing is not up to the mark. Few dialogues are good. Production values are decent.

V is promoted as a different film, but turns out to be a routine fare. Anyone who saw the trailer would have guessed that Nani is killing people for a strong reason. And V reaches that point in the most predictable way possible. Nani’s introduction and the consequent challenge to Sudheer’s character seems interesting. But the narration falls flat with Sudheer’s character never seeming to be potential enough to stop Nani from killing the next person.

Sudheer’s romance track with Nivetha Thomas only made his character weaker and appear aimless. Nani doesn’t have much to do besides killing people using different techniques. Hence, the director inserted a couple of comedy scenes in between and Nani had fun doing those. The actual idea of the film is to present it as a cat and mouse game, but it never gets exciting as Nani is always exactly one step ahead of Sudheer.

The predictability of Nani’s backstory is the biggest drawback of V. Director Indraganti Mohana Krishna comes up with a poorly written back story that is neither engaging nor emotional. The army episode is thrown in just to make the killer’s character authentic for being one step ahead of the cops. There are many movies where the hero does crime to bring bad people to justice and a sincere cop trying to stop him.

Nani has been picking good scripts lately, but V has nothing new on any front. He is presented like a typical action hero, though. He did his best despite the shortcomings. OTT release is like a blessing in disguise for V as it doesn’t have enough goods to become a winner at the box office.

Bottom Line: Dull and Flat!

Synopsys: A cop is murdered and the case is handed over to DCP Aditya. The killer leaves clues and challenges Aditya to stop him from committing further crimes. Who is this killer? Why did he challenge Aditya? Will Aditya catch the killer?

Review: This is the much awaiting movie that got released on OTT platform starring the Real Star Nani and Sudheer Babu in the lead roles.

DCP Aditya is a super cop at Hyderabad who has been honoured with many prestigious Awards and who is considered as the most desirable bachelor and a celebrity. He meets Apoorva Ramanujan an aspiring crime novelist and falls in love with her. One day a police officer is murdered and the case is handed over to DCP Aditya.  The killer leaves a note directed at Aditya also calls and informs him that he is planning to kill few more people and challenges DCP to stop and catch him. The killer leaves hits at the crime scene of every crime he commits. Thus begins the chase between the killer and the DCP. Aditya finds that the killer is his school mate Vishnu. He tries to investigate the motive behind these murders trying to find out who exactly Vishnu is and why he is committing these gruesome murders.

This movie is Nani’s 25 th film. Nani steals the show. He is the life and soul of this movie. His dialogue delivery and performance are amazing. His character is shown as a psycho killer and the seriousness in his mannerism and dialogue delivery definitely needs a special mention.  Sudheer Babu as a cop perfectly fits to the role and proves yet again his acting skills. The movie goes with a serious pace. We get to see Nani in a new avatar with negative shade in the character. One must say both have proven their acting skills in the most commendable manner. Nivetha Thomas acting was impressive as a wannabe crime novelist. The second lead actress Aditi Rao Hydari, though is seen only in the second half of the film, had an important role in the story. Supporting actors Vennela Kishore, Tanikella Bharani did their parts well.

Screenplay and cinematography were commendable. In action thriller movies BGM plays a major role. BGM by Thaman was perfect which keeps the pace with the story and the mood of the film. Songs are good. Amit Trivedi has given good soundtracks to the movie few of which have become viral on social platforms and Youtube.

The film definitely holds the attention of the audience. V is an action thriller movie. The film is definitely worth watching.

All in all, Nani’s 25th film lacks uniqueness. It is a regular story of revenge. The title “V” stands for Nani’s name in the film but it is about vengeance.

Nani's 25th film V is a watchable thriller that could have worked well with better twists and surprises.

Even though there is a promising cast, even that is not used. The first half gives us an uncomfortable feeling but there is a bit of hope for better things to come in the second. But what happens there is even forgettable.

Yet another OTT release and this time around, it is the 25th film of actor Nani, in which he plays the antagonist for the first time. However, it is the good cop Adithya (Sudheer Babu) who gets the hero introduction scene. Our hero has something “massier” lined up.

The plot revolves around a cop and a serial killer who taunts him with clues and catch-me-if-you-can lines. Who is V and why does he commit these murders? And why does he choose Adithya to communicate these to and taunt, when it could have been any other officer; even a one higher in rank? So far, so good.

A double murder within the first 20 minutes does set up the tempo, however, the director fails to utilise this start and tries to pack too many elements and ends up as a Hollywood wannabe version of a crime thriller. You also have a Scarlet Pimpernel/Da Vinci style symbols being left at the crime scene.

Usually, serial killers in movies are known to be targetting women, here it is a welcome change. In this day and age, to show killers using mobiles to communicate is a bit of a stretch, considering the tracking technology we have, thankfully an explanation has been given for the same. We also wonder when a slice of novelty would be infused into those stereotypical don/henchmen scenes.

Adithya and Apoorva’s (Nivetha Thomas who we are told is a first-class Psychology graduate) first meeting may have been construed as something casual and cool, nonetheless, comes nothing as such and looks to be contrived. Over time, both characters develop a more natural chemistry. Whichever event Adithya attends, Apoorva lands up conveniently, otherwise how will the romantic track proceed?

Albeit, there is a little bit of reprieve in the sense that our heroine is not there in the story to just hang by the hero’s side, she aids him in his mission to nab V as well. However, their story does act as a speed-breaker in between while the same couldn’t be said of the Nani-Aditi Rao Hydari (who probably comes for the shortest timeline of all) love story. Despite the limited time, there is a bit of a freshness.

Nani’s hero introduction scene, puffing away and plunging a sharp object at the victim’s ? neck does add a bit of mystique, you can’t miss the Arjun Reddy hangover. We sincerely hope the glasses were for anonymity and not a hero introduction accessory.

Coming to the performances, Sudheer Babu is constrained and delivers with his tall frame aiding him in the role of a police officer. Nivetha is a natural and shines with whatever little material she has.

Coming to the man of the moment, Nani waltz in his V avatar, perhaps borrowed from V for Vendetta, as with many other elements in the story. Going for grey lens seems to have worked in his favour. Watch out for the scenes where he stays impassive in those close shaves, just like any other shrewd criminal would have done.

Aditi brings in a lot of dignity to her role. However, cute scenes announcing pregnancy are really becoming a tiring trope. Dialogues are intelligent and witty. Other technical departments are adequate. Overall, the movie follows a pattern - it starts off well, dips and then revives a bit and then, rinse and repeat.

V Movie Review – A Plodding Thriller

V Movie Review Nani V Telugu Movie Review

V Telugu Movie Review

Telugu360 Rating 2.5/5

With the uncertainty due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a few filmmakers of upcoming Telugu movies are opting for digital release. Nani starrer V is the first notable Tollywood film all set to release through the OTT platform. Producer Dil Raju took a brave decision and sold the movie rights to Amazon Prime. The film is set for release today (September 5th).

Starring Nani, Sudheer Babu, Aditi Rao Hydari and Nivetha Thomas in the lead roles, V is billed as an intriguing thriller. The trailer received a good response from audience. As the first film post lockdown, its arrival is eagerly awaited. This is Nani’s 25th film and he will be seen in a negative role with Sudheer Babu playing a serious and irreverent cop in this thriller. The movie is directed by Mohana Krishna Indraganti, with Amit Trivedi scoring the music.

Will V successfully initiate the new trend and encourage filmmakers to go for digital releases from here on? Let’s find out.

Set in Hyderabad background, the film V is a showdown between a Gallantry award winning police officer DCP Aditya (Sudheer Babu) and a serial killer (Nani). Time and again, the serial killer teases the DCP, leaving clues about his next murder and challenges the latter to try and stop him. To know more about the cat and mouse game, watch the V movie on Amazon Prime.

For a film like V the success is directly proportional to the thrill and twist factors that the director manages to embed into the script. Director Indraganti Mohan Krishna attempted this tough genre and the outcome is not very encouraging. A serial killer challenging the police system to stop him is an exciting concept which heavily leans on an edge of the seat screenplay and the director’s ability to create a roller coaster ride. Unfortunately, the audience of ‘V’ film are treated to a flat narrative that offers little excitement.

The killer’s backstory could not evoke the anticipated sympathy and lacks adequate justification. Too many threads are mixed up in trying put this together. Hyderabad’s old city riots, women trafficking gangs and Nani’s flashback – just too many. Not to mention the shift in the killer’s approach towards the miscreants given his profession.

First half of the film is decent enough, but the graph goes down south from there. It may have been better if DCP had actually managed to resolve the serial killer flashback in his investigation.

Indraganti leaves his mark in two scenes where the killer (Nani) interacts with his co-passengers on the train, bus. Indraganti’s niche mark is visible in two melodious songs as well as in the picturisation. Music director Amit Trivedi did commendable job with the songs. S.Thaman’s background score is good as well. Production values by SVC banner are adequate.

Performances:

As always, Natural star Nani did his best to play his character. However, his attempt to match a serial killer’s psych with a different dialogue modulation did not sit very well. His backstory matches his core family audience’s taste. Sudheer Babu got a meaty role as a police officer, his physique is excellent. Special mention to the introduction fight sequence. Nivetha Thomas role is just okay and has no scope to perform. Aditi Rao Hydari’s role is short one, limited to the backstory. Vennela Kishore, Tanikella Bharani and other characters are added in to fill in the cast.

Nani, Sudheer Babu characters Two melodious songs, their presentation

Poor plot, dull Screenplay Lack of thrill factor

‘V’ movie is a pretty average film which couldn’t meet the expectations. Solid performances by the lead heroes, two great songs, and background score are the saving grace. Had it been a big screen release, people would have complained a lot but now with direct OTT release, give it a try – just don’t set the bar high.

V movie review: Nani, Sudheer Babu's battle of egos inconsistent and predictable

V is a Telugu film, and if a top star is portrayed as an anti-hero, he cannot be a diabolical person at any cost.

V movie review: Nani, Sudheer Babu's battle of egos inconsistent and predictable

Language: Telugu

Indraganti Mohana Krishna’s V , starring Nani and Sudheer Babu, begins with a quote from William Shakespeare’s The Tempest:  “At this hour lie at my mercy all mine enemies.” But the film is not really based on the play or the characters. So what is the significance of the quote then? The answer lies in the lead up to the many brutal deaths of villains in the story by a mysterious killer.

The killer (Nani) relishes the act of killing so much that he finds creative ways to kill his subjects, but most of them have to do with finding the right technique to ensure a quick death. He loves puzzles and challenging those in power because he wants to make a point. And the responsibility to stop this killer falls in the hands of a tough cop, DCP Aditya, who struggles to find a motive behind the killing spree. Aditya knows that time is fast running out and no matter how hard he tries, the killer is always a step ahead of him.

The entire drama revolves around the battle of egos between these two characters, played by Nani and Sudheer Babu, and who is going to emerge as the winner. So far, so good. But then, the biggest villain of the film is the world and the characters that inhabit it.

The story itself feels like a watered down version of an FBI manhunt operation, where you are expected to empathise with the killer. Why? Because it is a Telugu film, and if a top star is portrayed as an anti-hero, he cannot be a diabolical person at any cost.

Then there must be a purpose behind it. This, in turn, affects the way we perceive the story. We empathise with both the hero and the anti-hero. We root for both of them, and want both of them to win. As a result, the clash of egos simply feels like a never-ending wait for the big reveal — a flashback — that you can sense coming from a mile away. All this makes the drama quite predictable.

Then there is the whole aspect of how the story is narrated. In a nutshell, V struggles to find its rhythm or create dramatic moments which will take you by surprise. There is barely an element of tension even when the investigation is underway.

If Aditya is hellbent on catching the killer, should the focus be on his personal life and how he flirts with a crime novelist, Apoorva (Nivetha Thomas), whom he has just met a couple of days ago? Their fleeting romance punctates the drama like an unnecessary comma in a sentence. He suspects her at one point, but it does not lead to anything that you would find interesting. Her passion for crime literature does help Aditya in one aspect, and the lead up to that moment feels like a banal exercise. Could they have not met at his office, pouring over the files and other data? Or how about a different puzzle which actually requires them to short circuit their grey cells because it is so hard to crack? The more you think about V, the more you realise what a shaky ground it is built on.

The only time the drama comes alive is when Nani appears on screen. In the first act, at least, he does come across as an unpredictable character, whose ability to get into the head of people around him sets him apart. He scares them out with his jokes, and he stays calm no matter what. Nani pulls this off well, and his occasional conversations with Babu, who is earnest in his role, are reasonably well written. But such moments are often short-lived. Among other actors, Aditi Rao Hydari, who plays a key role, has limited screen time. However, she is the emotional core of the story. It all seems good on paper, but the effect does not translate well on screen.

Thaman’s background score lacks punch. On the bright side, the film is well-shot and PG Vinda creates the right ambience and mood with his lighting.

When you think about how the entire film unfolds, it feels like Krishna, the writer and director, has three stories to tell — one is the clash between the cop and the killer; the second is a revenge drama, with a big canvas but low stakes; the third is a commentary on the many social evils in the society. Only one of these stories is remotely interesting on screen. Perhaps, by the end of the film, you will figure out what that is. But when you do, you will feel like you have solved the puzzle without having to try too hard. That is the catch-22 situation that V finds itself in. It sets out to be a puzzle, but is also fairly easy to crack.

V is streaming on Amazon Prime Video India.

V - Telugu Movie Review

V - Lacks the quirkiness and cool quotient required to pull off this one!

Bharath Vijayakumar

Let's be honest. One look at the trailer of V and you can pretty well guess the one liner of the film. That the makers would have been aware of this is a given. So, what would be your least expectation when you sit down to watch this film? Performances that keep you interested, a screenplay that should keep you sufficiently engaged and entertainment of course. The makers seem to have other ideas. They somehow feel that chic visuals would suffice!

V is essentially a cat and mouse game between a cop and a killer on a spree. With the killer being the hero, there is hardly any suspense that there would be this flashback where he has been wronged. When you are dishing out a done to death and predictable storyline, you atleast ought to have something novel in the presentation. But V follows every cliche to a T! The supposedly intelligent battle between Vishnu (Nani) and Aditya ( Sudheer Babu ) comes across as silly. Vishnu gives clues/riddles before each murder to entice Aditya and create some sort of excitement for us. But these riddles reminded me of a comedy scene from a Tamil film where comedian Vivek playing a doctor prescribes something in an unreadable handwriting and what he has actually written is Vicks! Nivetha Thomas is introduced as though she might have a role to play in the bigger scheme of things. This entire romantic track between her and Sudheer is such a put off and reeks of fakeness. I really thought that there was a reason for this fakeness and a reveal later would make sense of this but alas nothing of that sort happens.

Nani is pretty decent (but nothing more) and is the main reason that V remains watchable. But his characterisation is full of gimmicks and is a mere ploy to make the film appear sophisticated which it never is. The only scene that really worked for me is him having some fun with a stranger on a bus on his way to Mumbai. If you think of it, there is no real reason for him to behave this way. But it works and this is precisely the film that V could have been without even having the need to make any sense of it at all. Something on the lines of the 2009 Ravi Teja starrer Kick is what I am talking about. But V wants to be a darker film. It wants to project itself as a grown up film and it opts for gore to establish its grown-upness. But sadly, it assumes the audience to be infants!

Apart from Nani, it is only Aditi Rao who makes an impression in her brief screentime. The other actors don't really make a mark and having Sudheer Babu play the foil to Nani fails big time. The BGM tries to create an eerie atmosphere but it works only till you realise that it is eerily similar to the work of Ghibran from Raatchasan (Tamil). The cinematography with its dark colour palette remains the sole interesting feature of V.

As said earlier, V might have worked better if it tried to be a fun film. There is this scene where a character before being bumped off makes eloborate plans for a sexual rendezvous and has a decorated bed out in the open in a garden. Guess where he got this fetish from? By watching films of veteran director K. Raghavendra Rao. I was hoping for more such tongue in cheek humour. There are other film references as well including one about the Korean thriller 'I Saw The Devil' and one involving a vintage Hindi song. These are nice little bursts of quirkiness but the film needed more of them.

From Hyderabad to Vizag to Mumbai to Kashmir to Thailand, the film keeps moving across landscapes but the age old plot remains stuck to where it is. Though it aspires, 'V' neither has the quirkiness nor the cool quotient to pull off a win from a done to death template!

V Movie Review: Nani & Sudheer Babu’s Cop & Killer Chase Is Engaging In Parts But Highly Predictable

V is a story we all have seen and can predict..

V Movie Review: Nani & Sudheer Babu's Cop & Killer Chase Is Engaging In Parts But Highly Predictable

What’s Good: NANI!

What’s Bad: We have already seen this.

Loo Break: Not when you know Nani is about to take over the screen.

Watch or Not?: If the age-old concept of cop and mysterious killer chase still excites you, go in, V is made for you. And in case of a Nani fan, this character is a reason added to love his craft more.

A psycho/serial killer is on the loose (Nani); his identity is V, nothing more. He challenges the mighty and desirable cop of the town Adithya (Sudheer Babu). The cat and mouse chase begins, and the story unfolds.

V Movie Review: Nani & Sudheer Babu's Cop & Killer Chase Is Engaging In Parts But Highly Predictable

V Movie Movie Review: Script Analysis

The movie opens up in a riot, Sudheer’s Aditya takes down the baddies and goes shirtless while doing the same. The very first 5 minutes are enough to tell that this isn’t an everyday cop story. Adithya is rather more of a Bollywood cop. Chiselled body, loved personality, on the cover of magazines, more of an influencer type. So Mohana Krishna Indraganti, who has written and directed this drama, tells you to have the suspension of disbelief.

Coming to the complete conflict, the trailer was enough insight to understand that this is a good guy bad guy drama and a chase that leads to thrills. So when we are already aware of the dynamics, what matters is why. That is where the script falters.

Not that cop and killer is a bad idea to make even after so many years. But making it with the same grammar and the already seen storyline is. V for the significant part of it is Bollywood’s Ek Villain meets Raman Raghav 2.0. watch it to understand why I said that.

While I have mentioned Raman Raghav 2.0, V does get into the zone. The psychic of a killer is explored on the surface. There is even a conversation between the ‘good guy’ and the ‘bad guy’. But a more detailed journey into that dynamic which says we are the same versions taking the different paths would have made for a more engaging watch.

PS: My examples are Bollywood because V gets the same treatment.

V Movie Movie Review: Star Performance

It is a risky path to walk when the antagonist is the hero of the film, and Nani understands that. The actor seems to have researched and gotten into his character with finesse. The best part is that he isn’t mimicking any stereotype of a psycho killer. He has made his version, that is mad till a degree but highly intelligent for his good.

Sudheer Babu as Adithya the glamorised cop does as he is directed to. But at the scripting level, Nani gets to showcase a broad and robust range, whereas Sudheer’s Adithya falls flat in this department.

Nivetha Thomas, who gets a harmless character, plays the chirpy girl quite lovely, but the writing doesn’t take her ahead of that. Aditi Rao Hydari in an extended appearance looks ethereal but acts just like we have seen her in the past few films.

V Movie Movie Review: Direction, Music

Mohana Krishna Indraganti, who is the writer as well as a director, is highly inspired by the dramatics of thrillers. The filmmaker unapologetically adds drama in the scene, and it does make for a good watch for the fans of the genre. But, only dramatics don’t make good entertaining thrillers. He manages to translate his on paper material to the screen as expected, but it is all predictable.

Music by S Thaman and Amit Trivedi is good for the time being. But I am not sure about the shelve life of it. Cinematography by P.G. Vinda is a plus as it adds a lot to the movie-watching experience. His use of lights, camera placement, focus, everything is enjoyable.

V Movie Movie Review: The Last Word

V is a story we all have seen and can predict. So in case, you plan to watch it, watch it for entertainment and have the suspension of disbelief just like we had watched the late 2000s police dramas.

Movie : V (2020)

Released on : Amazon Prime

Starring : Nani, Sudheer Babu, Nivetha Thomas, Aditi Rao Hydari

Director : Mohan Krishna Indraganti

Music : Amit Trivedi , SS Thaman (BGM)

Producer : Dil Raju

Release Date : 5 September 2020

Post lock down many Telugu movies were released as they didn’t gain much expectations or appreciation because of the small scale and small budget. First big Hero film “V” with lot of hype has been released on OTT platform. Lets see how’s the film.

One of the Police Officer in Hyderabad gets killed and DCP Aditya (Sudheer Babu) gets that case to handle that. A Psycho Killer (Nani) challenges DCP Aditya nab him before he finishes killing four persons by giving clues to him. DCP Aditya seeks help from Apoorva (Nivetha Thomas) for nathching that psycho killer. What was relation between Apoorva and Killer? Why is Nani killing those peoples? Who is Aditi Rao Hydari? To want to get those answers we have to watch the film.

Nani was the Heart and Soul of the movie. He excels in his performance as psycho killer. It was his Milestone film as it is his 25th film.

Sudheer Babu has got same screen space as Nani and he also done very good job. His action sequence were very good and also he worked on his expressions whih were very good.

Aditi Rao was very good in her small role and done justice to her role. Niivetha thomas was just okay as director didn’t utilise her full potential.

Although the film has good perfomances still this film is very mediocre and sometimes you feel very lethargic as film screenplay is very dull and prdictable. We have seen this type of films long ago. It was like a mixture of Dhoom series some hollywood films and Aparichitudu. Movie starts with high note and then falls miserably. Climax was very disappointed as it falls very flat.

Music by Amit Trivedi is very average and BGM by Thaman is not extrodinary as it looks like he uses BGM from other movies.

Technical aspects were very good as film looks very rich Kudos to Dil raju. Dop and Cinematography were top notch and looks good.

On the whole the 25th Landmark Film on Nani “V” is very average and no where comes to th hype it created. It was very good decision by Dil Raju to release the movie in OTT as if it would get release in Theatres it may be cost failure venture.

Rating : 2* / 5

Maharaja Review: A Screenplay Wonder

Maharaja Review: A Screenplay Wonder

Movie: Maharaja Rating: 3/5 Banner: Passion Studios Cast: Vijay Sethupathi, Anurag Kashyap, Natty (Natraj), Bharathiraja, Abhirami, Mamta Mohandas, Singampuli, Aruldoss and others Dialogues: Vasanth Music: B Ajaneesh Loknath DOP: Dinesh Purushothaman Editor: Kodati Pavan Kalyan Production Designer: V. Selvakumar Stunt Director: Anl Arasu Producers: Sudhan Sundaram, Jagadish Palanisamy Written and Directed by: Nithilan Saminathan Release Date: June 14, 2024

Vijay Sethupathi’s 50th movie, Maharaja, has been dubbed into Telugu under the same name. Though it didn't receive much initial hype, the film garnered interest among movie lovers with its trailer.

Let’s explore its merits and demerits.

Story: Maharaja (Vijay Sethupathi), a barber, lives with his teenage daughter Jyothi in Chennai's suburbs. One day, Maharaja goes to the police station and asks them to find their stolen 'Lakshmi', which was taken away from their home during a burglary.

In Maharaja's life, "Lakshmi," a rusted iron dustbin, holds a special place because it saved Jyothi from a fatal accident that killed his wife.

Police laugh at Maharaja when he tells them that thieves stole a dustbin worth Rs 300 but nothing else. They initially labeled him as a mad guy for approaching them to find the dustbin, but they consider the situation serious when he offers to bribe the Inspector with lakhs of rupees if the culprit is found.

Police begin their investigation, believing that Maharaja must have hidden an important document or large sums of money in the dustbin. When they finally find the culprit, they discover a shocking truth that shakes everyone.

What's the shocking twist? Why did Maharaj agree to pay the police so much money to find the dustbin?

Artistes’ Performances: Vijay Sethupathi has delivered many exceptional performances throughout his career. Additionally, he portrayed the role of a father to a young girl in the Telugu film Uppena. In Maharaja, he takes on a complex role, being both a father to a teenage girl and a man determined to uncover the identity of the person responsible for stealing his 'Lakshmi'. His subtle and intricate performance, combined with his intense outbursts during crucial scenes, evokes strong emotional responses.

Anurag Kashyap's portrayal of the antagonist may seem a bit unusual at first, but his performance becomes truly gripping as the film progresses.

Sachana Nemidas delivers a solid performance as Vijay Sethupathi's daughter.

Natty, as the police inspector, and Abhirami, as Anurag Kashyap's wife, are commendable in their roles.

Technical Excellence: The technical aspects of the film are equally excellent. Ajaneesh Loknath's background score elevates the film to a higher level.

While the film lacks traditional songs, Ajaneesh compensates with his captivating background music.

The editing is concise, and the production design is satisfactory.

Highlights: Terrific Screenplay Vijay Sethupathi’s performance Emotional connection Climax episode

Drawback: Some contrived scenes Disturbing violence on women

Analysis Maharaja marks the 50th film in Vijay Sethupathi's career, and he has chosen a story and screenplay befitting this significant milestone.

Recently, we have seen exceptional thrillers, particularly from the Malayalam film industry, such as Mohanlal's Drishyam and Iratta. However, Maharaja does not present itself as a thriller.

Throughout the film, the director skillfully keeps the audience's full attention by withholding clues about the film's direction until the final act.

Maharaja serves as an exemplary illustration of how to craft a captivating screenplay. At its core, it is a revenge drama, but it also explores deeper emotional themes, maintaining suspense until the very end.

It is exceedingly challenging for a critic to discuss this film without revealing spoilers. Much of the first half focuses on Vijay Sethupathi's unwavering determination to locate the stolen dustbin and his interactions with the police.

Like the police officers in the story, the audience infers that the protagonist is not genuinely searching for the dustbin. Instead, he is likely devising a plan to uncover the truth or identify those responsible for causing him great harm.

The brilliance of director Nithilan Saminathan's non-linear screenplay lies in its ability to keep us from anticipating Vijay Sethupathi's true intentions.

The director introduces key characters early on but withholds the central plot until the latter part of the film. The convergence of plot points occurs in the final act, where all threads, including the burglars, the police, Vijay Sethupathi's life, and the initial accident, come together to unveil some startling truths in the climax.

The film also addresses unsettling subject matter.

Maharaja is presented as a thriller, but it is primarily an emotionally driven narrative. The emotional aspect and sentiment of the story are more impactful than the thriller elements. Additionally, the film accurately depicts the police system and its operations.

The film has shortcomings, such as instances of contrived writing and situations, as well as certain portions that tend to prolong unnecessarily. The subplot involving Mamta Mohandas is poorly written. However, these flaws do not significantly affect the film’s flow.

Overall, Maharaja is a screenplay-focused emotional thriller. While it lacks the typical commercial elements one might expect from such stories, those who appreciate skillfully crafted thrillers and emotionally charged dramas centered around the relationship between a father and daughter will find it watchable.

Bottom Line: Emotional Barber

  • Harom Hara Review: Inconsistent And Unengaging
  • Satyabhama Review: More Turns, Less Engaging
  • Manamey Review: Carefree Narration

To be fair, "V" begins well and holds interest thanks to Nani's acting. Director Indraganti should have focused on the latter part of the story. He also has used Telugu movie references like K Raghavendra Rao, Boyapati, and other movie making styles to elicit humor, which is fine but the investigation scenes and the clues are so formulaic.
