Emily Johnson Allied Universal 123 Fictional Lane Houston, TX 77001

Dear Ms. Johnson:

Several years ago, a diligent security guard’s swift action saved my cousin’s life during a medical emergency at a shopping mall. This incident not only instilled in me the value of security personnel, but it also ignited my passion for the profession. It is with this enthusiasm and experience honed over the years that I hope to bring to Allied Universal as your next security guard.

During my tenure at Security Solutions of America, I effectively utilized CCTV cameras and access control software, which led to a 38% reduction in reported incidents in my designated patrol area within the first year. Also, harnessing my training in First Aid, I administered care on 12+ occasions, ensuring individuals received timely assistance before paramedics arrived.

Prior to this, as a junior security guard at Star Protection Agency, I was commended for my adaptability and knack for quickly learning new tools and techniques. Here, I increased the effectiveness of nighttime patrols by 27% through the strategic use of infrared equipment and motion-sensor technologies.

The blend of my hands-on experience, proficiency in using state-of-the-art security equipment, and a deep-seated commitment to safeguarding others, makes me confident in my ability to contribute to Allied Universal. I am excited about the opportunity to bring my skills to your esteemed organization and ensure the safety and security of your premises and its occupants.

How to Format a Security Guard Cover Letter

Salesperson pops out of computer screen to depict outselling the competition with sales cover letter

Just like you’d customize your patrol schedules and emergency response procedures to specific company needs, you’ll want to apply that same thought process to your cover letter.

The job description will be your guide to success here. Each company will emphasize key qualifications they’re looking for, so all you have to do is stay alert to the indicators that something is essential. For example, a company may reference using security cameras, and you could stand out by referencing your proficiency in commercial CCTV camera systems.

Security guard cover letter introduction

Whether you’re working with customers or patrol team members, you’d want to learn their names to provide a personable touch while on the job. You should do the same with your cover letter by greeting a hiring manager by name. So, try to use your vigilant abilities to see if you can locate a contact person in the job description or on the company’s website.

The next part of optimizing your opener will be getting specific to each job’s security responsibilities and mission. For example, you could explain how you’ll use your safety management skills to ensure a comfortable shopping experience at a retail store.

The opener below doesn’t make enough impact since the applicant doesn’t address a specific person or mention anything related to the company’s mission or security needs.

Lacking a personal connection here!

Your security guard job opening caught my attention. This looks like a great company to work for, and I’d be eager to join your surveillance team.

The following opener does a much better job of relating to the blend of traditional and innovative vigilance protocols that’ll make the applicant successful as a security guard at G4S Secure Solutions.

An opener connecting to the company’s security practices!

The work of a security guard is always performance-driven. The best way to optimize the body of your cover letter for success is by sharing examples of previous work achievements that are backed by numbers, like how you improved response times or reduced security incidents.

If you don’t have much experience, you could also reference job skills gained through a security management degree or transferable skills like providing excellent customer service in previous jobs.

Security guard cover letter closing

The best way to start your closing paragraph is to restate your connection to the company’s mission and how your top security skills fit in. For example, you could write about how you’ll use your knowledge in strategic threat intelligence practices to ensure a safe working environment where all premises are monitored.

Lastly, it’s good practice to thank the hiring manager for their time and use a call to action, such as “I look forward to discussing this security guard role with you further.”

The closer below doesn’t make enough impact since it lacks information about specific security skills or company needs.

Lacking specific security skills or needs!

I believe my skills and experiences align perfectly with what your team is looking for. I’m eager to discuss my qualifications as a security guard with you further.

Ramon Yusef

The following closer does a better job of presenting how the applicant will help G4S in their mission to provide unwavering client safety as a security guard.

An impactful closer related to the company’s mission!

I’m inspired by G4S’ reputation for excellence in security solutions and unwavering dedication to client safety. I’m excited about the opportunity to contribute to your mission and vision. Thank you for considering my application.

One page is the optimal length for security guard cover letters. Just like recording surveillance data, you’ll want to keep your cover letter concise and relevant to a company’s primary needs, such as checkpoint patrol strategies and using two-way radios.

You should make your cover letter custom for each job to ensure the specific security skills you write about are relevant and stand out to each company. For example, one company may use an active patrol system, whereas another performs random patrols. A custom cover letter helps you stand out for each one.

When you can’t find a contact person’s name, you can simply address your security cover letter to “[name of company] hiring team.” Then, ensure the rest of your cover letter is highly specific to surveillance systems and tactical planning needs based on the job description to ensure the details still stand out.

Security officers are responsible for patrolling an organization’s grounds and detecting suspicious behavior. They prevent illegal actions: protecting premises and staff, patrolling designated areas, evicting violators, reporting events, and adhering to safety and security rules.

Before a company hires a security officer, they usually request an application letter that clearly states who you are, your qualifications, and why you are an ideal fit for the job role. At this point, you need to sell yourself in the best way possible irrespective of the fact that you have little or no experience; you may be wondering how.

In this article, we’ll share how to write an application letter for a security officer job with no experience and gain entry to an interview session; carefully read through.

How To Write An Application Letter For Security Officer Job

Creating a compelling application letter doesn’t have to be difficult. The process can be streamlined by following a few simple steps. The ultimate goal is to create a cover letter that complements your resume for a job application that feels complete and well-rounded and demonstrates why you’re the best choice for the particular role.

Keep reading to find out how to write an application letter for a security officer job:

An excellent security officer’s cover letter should never use the same template for each job application. You must tailor your cover letter to each specific role. Your letter should explain why you’re a good fit for the position. A generic, copy-and-paste cover letter is insufficient to do this.

Furthermore, application tracking systems (ATS) play an important part in the candidate screening process for numerous positions. These systems look for terms that match the qualifications provided in the job description. Incorporate terms from the security guard job description into your cover letter to make it ATS-friendly.

Your cover letter should encourage potential employers to contact you. To ensure accuracy, provide your contact information in the header and match it with your résumé. Your contact information should include the following:

  • City and state
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Relevant links to your professional portfolio or LinkedIn, if applicable

Personalize the salutation on your security guard cover letter by addressing the hiring manager directly. If you investigate the role and the security team, you will most likely be able to identify the recruiting manager. Addressing your letter to the precise person who will read it shows your dedication to the application process.

If you can’t find the recruiting manager’s name or contact information, you can address the letter to the team you’ll be joining instead.

Most job listings often provide contact information for a hiring manager. If the security job you’re applying to doesn’t specify the hiring manager, invest time in researching the organizational structure to identify the person responsible for hiring.

Since completing my training in security protocols, I have developed a profound understanding of vigilance, adaptability, and ensuring the safety of assigned premises. The body paragraphs of your security officer cover letter allow you to present a more in-depth account of your security profession. Highlight aspects of your experience demonstrating your commitment to maintaining a safe environment and explain why you are the best candidate for the security guard post.

Because you don’t have job experience as a security guard, showcase your security abilities alongside personal traits such as vigilance, effective communication, and adaptability. Aim for a balanced presentation to paint a complete picture of your professional skills. Ensure that the skills you emphasize align with the priorities outlined in the job posting to resonate with the security team.

Treat your security guard’s cover letter as an occasion to explain any unique parts of your security experience. If you took time off for professional growth, changed careers, or obtained extra credentials, explain the circumstances briefly. Discuss how your experiences have improved your skills and positioned you as a strong contender for the security guard post.

Sample body paragraph

As a security officer, I have consistently demonstrated a passion for maintaining a secure environment and contributing to the safety of the premises under my watch. During my tenure at Vigilant Security Services, I received commendation for implementing effective surveillance measures and ensuring swift response to security incidents.

During a brief hiatus for professional development, I dedicated time to staying updated on the latest security methodologies, acquiring additional certifications, and enhancing my skills in risk assessment. During this period of growth, I reinforced my commitment to maintaining optimal security standards, ensuring that I bring technical proficiency and a fresh perspective to the security guard position.

The closing of your application letter should reiterate your enthusiasm for the security officer position and explain why you are a good fit for the job. Avoid repeating material from the body of your cover letter; instead, close with a remark that emphasizes your value and include an open-ended call to action expressing your excitement for an interview or encouraging additional discussion.

Every letter concludes with a signature; your cover letter is no exception. Ensure your cover letter concludes with a professional signoff appropriate for a formal letter. “Sincerely” and “Best regards” are always safe choices. Avoid unprofessional signoffs like “Love” or “Cheers,” as these choices read as informal at best and rude at worst.

Here are a few skills to highlight in your security officer job application letter:

  • Physical fitness
  • Stamina and resilience to stress
  • The ability to stay calm in case of emergency
  • Problem-solving abilities
  • Effective communication
  • Integrity and professionalism

Tips For Writing A Good Security Officer Cover Letter

Here are some tips you can consider when writing an effective security guard cover letter:

The cover letter and CV both represent your personality and competence. While your CV might be plain and straightforward, your cover letter can enhance it by revealing more about your personality.

For example, if you cite accomplishments on your resume again in your cover letter, you can go into greater detail. This broader perspective can express more about the importance of your accomplishments.

When crafting your letter, make it particular to each security guard post. Some companies provide examples of what to include in their cover letters, which you can use when writing your own. Examine job descriptions to determine a company’s preferred skills and language. Consider using “attention to detail” instead of “observational skills” in the job description.

Consider thoroughly reading and rereading your letter before sending it to verify no spelling or grammatical mistakes. You can copy your letter into word processors with automated proofreading features to simplify the process.

You should also consider reading the letter aloud to confirm that the tone and words are professional. You can ask a friend or colleague to read the letter again, which will help you decide whether it elicits the appropriate response and tone.

A company’s brand voice is how it employs words and phrases to make an impression on its employees and target audience. Understanding the company’s voice when writing your letter helps demonstrate your attention to detail and ability to quickly shift to a new role.

To showcase the company’s voice while writing, try reviewing the company’s website and your job description to better grasp the company’s property and employee security goals. You can then include this goal in your letter before detailing the specific abilities and strategies you would use to achieve it if you were hired for the role.

The tone of the letter comes from your wording and sentence construction choices. Before submitting the letter, consider whether your writing maintains a professional tone.

To maintain a professional tone throughout the letter, ensure your wording is respectful to the reader while staying direct and thorough. You can also consider removing slang or exclamation marks to keep the letter formal.

But if you’re really looking to wow recruiters and get your CV in front of the very best employers, then check out our guidance on how to write your own effective cover letter below.

How to write a Security Officer cover letter

A simple step-by-step guide to writing your very own winning cover letter.

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

You should write your cover letter in the body of the email (or messaging system if sending via a job board) and never attach it as a document.

The reason for this?

You want your cover letter to start connecting with the recruiter from the moment they open your application.

If they have to open a document to read it, it will slow things down and they may not even bother to open it.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

Start you cover letter with a greeting that is professional but friendly.

This will build rapport with the recruiter whilst showing your professionalism.

  • Hi, hope you’re well
  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid overly formal greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very traditional companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Now that you have warmed the recruiter up with a friendly greeting, firstly you need to let them know which role you are applying for.

Sometimes a recruitment consultant will be juggling 10 or 10 vacancies, so it’s important to specify which one you are applying to.

Give us much detail as possible (team/department, role title etc.) and paste in the reference number if you have one.

Here are some examples you can use.

  • I am interested in applying for the role of Security Officer with your company.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 40f57393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advert for an IT project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The main purpose of your cover letter is to excite recruiters and make them eager to open your CV. And you achieve this by quickly demonstrating your suitability to the job you are applying for.

Take a look at the job adverts you are applying for, and make note of the most important skills being asked for.

Then, when you write your cover letter, make your suitability the focal point.

Explain how you meet the candidate requirements fully, and why you are so well suited to carry out the job.

This will give recruiters all the encouragement they need to open your CV and consider your application.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

It is best to keep your cover letter brief if you want to ensure you hold the attention of busy recruiters and hiring managers. A lengthy cover letter will probably not get read in full, so keep yours to around 3-6 sentences and save the real detail for your CV.

Remember the purpose of your cover letter is to quickly get recruiters to notice you and encourage them to open your CV, so it only needs to include the highlights of your experience.

Sign off professionally

To finish off your cover note, add a professional signature to the bottom, stating your important contact details and information.

This not only provides recruiters with multiple means of contacting you, but it also adds a nice professional appearance to the cover letter, which shows that you know how to conduct yourself in the workplace.

Include the following points;

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Warm regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address
  • Profession title
  • Professional social network – e.g. LinkedIn

Here is an example signature;

Warm regards,

Aaron Smith Customer service professional 075557437373 [email protected] LinkedIn

Quick tip : To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate document that you could copy in.

What to include in your Security Officer cover letter

Here’s what kind of content you should include in your Security Officer cover letter…

The exact info will obviously depend on your industry and experience level, but these are the essentials.

  • Your relevant experience – Where have you worked and what type of jobs have you held?
  • Your qualifications – Let recruiters know about your highest level of qualification to show them you have the credentials for the job.

Dear Michael,

I hope this email finds you well. As a recent school leaver with a Level 3 BTEC in Public Services I am thrilled to apply for the position of Entry-Level Security Officer at Phoenix Security.

Throughout my three years with the company, I efficiently handled emergency situations, demonstrating my ability to stay calm and respond effectively under pressure including successfully performing first aid in five separate instances. My strong communication skills, developed through interacting with a diverse range of visitors and my Drama A Level studies, have equipped me to work collaboratively with the security team and uphold the highest safety standards. I am adept at using surveillance systems including ADT and PPF and my physical fitness from playing rugby and badminton is excellent.

I am eager to bring my enthusiasm for security and dedication to maintaining a safe environment to the team at Phoenix Security and I would love the opportunity to discuss how my skills and commitment align with your company’s vision.

Kind regards,

Laura Walton

How to Write a Cover Letter With No Experience (Examples Included!)

Getty Images

Writing a cover letter with no experience might feel like an intimidating task. The anxiety of facing a blank page—often with that inner voice whispering you may not be qualified enough—can indeed be paralyzing. But guess what? We’ve all been there, and trust me, you can do it too.

Everyone who has a job today started with no experience and had to write their first cover letter . Some of us even did it in a time when technology wasn’t around to help out (thankfully, things have changed!).

Need some guidance on writing yours? Here is everything you need to know to craft a cover letter with no experience, plus examples to guide you through the process.

What is a cover letter?

First things first: A cover letter is a document that you send to introduce yourself when applying for a job or internship. It complements your resume, providing more insight into who you are and the skills and qualifications that make you perfect for the role.

Think of it like a virtual handshake with the hiring manager. It’s your first interaction and your chance to quickly introduce yourself to secure an interview. Together with your resume , the cover letter is your opportunity to make a strong impression.

Why should you write a cover letter

Writing a cover letter, even if you lack experience, can set you apart from other candidates. It gives you space to delve more deeply into the skills and qualifications mentioned on your resume.

“Rather than focusing on what you have not accomplished yet in your career, focus on what you bring to the table: your skills, competencies, personality traits, and the values that you have developed in your life and education,” says Eloïse Eonnet , career coach and communication skills expert.

How to write a cover letter with no experience: 7 tips

When writing your cover letter, keep in mind your goal: leaving a positive first impression on the reader. It should include relevant information for the position you're applying for and maintain a professional yet engaging tone.

That’s your chance to convince the recruiter that you are the right person for the job and schedule an interview. “So, make sure you are clear on what skills and competencies you bring, and what personality traits make you a great fit,” says Eonnet.

If you still feel stuck and don’t know where to start, here's our seven-step guide on how to write a cover letter with no experience:

1. Check the company and job description

The first step in crafting a well-written cover letter is to research the company where you want to work. Carefully review what the organization shares about its values and culture on social media or its website to understand how you can relate to it in your letter.

The job description should also be examined closely because it typically includes keywords that you can incorporate into your cover letter when explaining your skills and competencies.

2. Include contact details

Mastering the cover letter format is as important as the content itself. Traditionally, a cover letter begins with your name and contact details—ensuring that if the recruiter decides to interview you, the information will be visible and easy to find.

And below your information, right before your opening paragraph, should be the hiring manager contact details. This format is considered more professional and is what is typically expected from candidates.

For example:

[Your First and Last Name]

[Phone number]

[Optional, unless it’s asked for: Your address]

[Date you're sending the letter]

[Hiring managers First and Last Name]

3. Begin with a friendly yet professional greeting

Remember, a cover letter is your initial interaction with the hiring manager, but in a virtual setting. Like in the real world, you begin with a greeting and then proceed to introduce yourself.

Choose a formal greeting such as “ Dear First and Last Name” , avoiding casual words like “ Hi” or “ Hey” to keep a professional tone. After that, you can start your first paragraph by introducing yourself and stating the position you are applying for.

Dear Lucia Carter,

My name is Alana Reeves, and I’m excited to apply for the Copywriter position at ABC Agency, which I discovered on LinkedIn. As a recent graduate from Columbia University, I’d be thrilled to work for a company that aligns with [Company’s values and/or culture].

4. Highlight relevant qualifications

Now, it’s time to showcase that you have what it takes to fulfill the desired position. When writing a cover letter with no experience, the key is to emphasize any relevant skills and competencies, detailing how they were developed.

“If a candidate has no work experience to pull from, I suggest that they talk about projects they completed at school, courses they took, extracurricular activities and community based projects they focused on, and even personal life events and projects they have experienced,” says Eonnet.

Filter what’s most relevant to the role you’re applying for and create a link between your skills and the job description.

“ Since my first semester at school, I’ve cultivated a passion for producing digital content for companies and institutions. I acted on this by creating a blog for the Mass Communication's website, where I wrote stories that captured the daily lives of the students on campus and the Columbia University culture. I also created a series providing recommendations of books, websites, films and TV shows relevant to a Mass Communication graduate.”

5. Showcase hard and soft skills

At this point, you’ve probably heard about hard and soft skills , right? Hard skills are technical abilities or knowledge that you can acquire through education, work experience, or training, whereas soft skills are linked to behavior and interpersonal relationships.

Recruiters seek candidates with a good mix of both types of skills, and the second and third paragraphs of your cover letter are perfect to show that you have what they are looking for.

“Show, do’’t tell! Rather than list your traits, they need to be in context of your past experience, even if it’s not official ’work experience,’” says Eonnet. So, use what you know about the company to show why you’re a good fit—be sure to explain how your skills match their needs.

“ During my four years as a blog content creator, I developed a strong understanding of SEO strategy, creative copywriting, and data analysis using Google Analytics, attracting approximately 1000 monthly visitors to the blog. I also applied my communication and self-management skills by interviewing students and managing the content by myself.”

If you have any top accomplishments, whether personal or academic, you can also include them in this section of your cover letter.

6. Close professionally

Wrap up your cover letter by reiterating your interest in the position and closing with a professional sign-off . You can use an engaging and friendly tone—and even ask for an interview—but don’t go overboard. Avoid overly casual language like “See you soon” or “Cheers”.

“I’m impressed by ABC Agency’s culture and creative approach to copywriting. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my qualifications further in an interview.

Thank you for considering my application.

Best regards,

Alana Reeves”

7. Proofread carefully

This should go without saying, but make sure to submit a flawless letter free from grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors. Unfortunately, even great candidates can be overlooked if their cover letter or resume has too many mistakes.

To avoid this, take time to proofread your writing before submission. Remember, you’re not the only one job hunting, and recruiters probably go through tons of cover letters and resumes daily. Anything less than impeccable could be a deal-breaker.

What to avoid when writing your cover letter

Understanding what not to say is also helpful when crafting a cover letter without experience. Here are two things to steer clear of:

Don’t be too apologetic

It’s easy to fall into the trap of downplaying your past experiences just because they weren’t formal jobs. However, you should—or at least try to—avoid this negative and overly apologetic approach at all costs.

“I would definitely avoid qualifying any past experience (school projects, odd jobs, internships, community service, personal projects) as ’not work experience.’ I see candidates use an apologetic tone sometimes, which is counterproductive.” says Eonnet.

Don’t focus on your lack of experience

If you’re searching for tips on how to write a cover letter with no experience, examples and such, chances are you're applying for an entry level position. In this case, avoid dedicating too much space in your letter to the fact that you haven’t had a traditional job.

“Recruiters who are looking to fill an entry-level role do not expect you to have a bunch of full-time work experience. Rather, they’re looking for candidates who are self-aware, ready to work, and interested in the position.” says Eonnet.

Designing your security officer cover letter: what is the best format

Let's start with the basics, your security officer cover letter should include your:

  • Introduction
  • Body paragraph
  • Closing statement
  • Signature (that's not a must)

Next, we'll move to the spacing of your security officer cover letter, and yes, it should be single-spaced ( automatically formatted for you in our cover letter templates ).

Don't go for a old-school font (e.g. Arial or Times New Roman), but instead, pick an ATS-favorite like Chivo, Volkhov, or Raleway, to stand out.

Our cover letter builder is also set up for you with the standard one-inch margin, all around the text.

Finally, ensure your security officer resume and cover letter are in the same font and are submitted in PDF (to keep the formatting in place).

P.S. The Applicant Tracker System (or ATS) won't be assessing your [job] cover letter, it's solely for the recruiters' eyes.

The top sections on a security officer cover letter

  • Header: Include your contact information and the date to ensure the recruiter knows who you are and how to reach you, which is critical in a profession where reliability and attention to detail are paramount.
  • Greeting: Use a professional salutation, addressing the hiring manager by name if possible, as it demonstrates your investigation and interpersonal skills, both of which are important in security-related positions.
  • Introduction: Briefly introduce yourself and express your enthusiasm for the security officer role; this sets the tone and shows your commitment to the safety and security profession.
  • Body: Highlight relevant experience, such as specific security tasks you've performed or emergency situations you've handled, to showcase your competence and readiness for the responsibilities of a security officer.
  • Closing: End with a strong conclusion, reiterating your interest in the role and mentioning your availability for an interview, while emphasizing your commitment to maintaining a secure environment, indicative of a dedicated security professional.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Proven experience in surveillance systems and emergency response protocols: critical for preventing and responding to incidents effectively.
  • Strong observational skills: essential for identifying suspicious behavior and preventing potential security breaches.
  • Physical fitness and stamina: necessary for patrolling premises, responding to incidents swiftly, and potentially diffusing physical altercations.
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills: important for writing detailed incident reports and communicating with law enforcement and emergency personnel.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations: ensures compliance with legal standards and helps in handling situations according to the law.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team: required for coordinating effectively with other security personnel and staff members to maintain a secure environment.

How to start your security officer cover letter: with a greeting, of course

Have you ever considered just how powerful a personalized salutation can be?

We sure have news for you! Your security officer cover letter should start with the right salutation to recruiters, nurturing a sense of respect and individuality.

Greet recruiters by using their first name (e.g. "Dear Tom" or "Dear Patricia") if you've previously established contact with them.

Otherwise, opt out for the less familiar, "Dear Ms. Peaches" or "Dear Ms Kelsey", if you've found the recruiter's name on LinkedIn or a corporate website.

"To whom it may concern" is never a good option, as it creates a sense that you've been sending out your security officer cover letter to anyone. Instead, use "Dear HR team" or "Dear (company name) recruiter" for a feeling of exclusivity.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Team,
  • Dear [Mr./Ms./Dr.] [Last Name],
  • Dear Search Committee,
  • Dear Human Resources Director,
  • Dear [Job Title] Hiring Team,

The security officer cover letter introduction: focusing on your unique value, with a creative twist

You are not the only one wondering how to start your security officer cover letter. Those first two sentences introduce your profile and should be memorable.

No pressure.

When beginning your security officer cover letter , immediately point out the unique value of working with you. In other words, what you promise to bring to the role by using your past track record of success.

Start your security officer cover letter with a creative twist by telling a joke or stating something relatable. Select this type of introduction only if it aligns with the company culture.

What comes next: your security officer cover letter middle paragraphs

In the next three to six paragraphs (or the body of your security officer cover letter) you have to prove your unique value .

Most candidates tend to mess up at this stage. They tend to just copy-paste information from their resume.

That's one big no-no.

Remember that when writing your security officer cover letter, it has to be personalized. And, your ultimate aim is to catch the recruiter's eye.

So, look back on key job requirements and write down a list that includes the ones you cover.

Next, select just one key achievement from your professional (or personal) history that meets those advert keywords.

Narrate a story around how you've grown your skill set and knowledge. Also, aim to show the unique understanding or soft skills you bring about, thanks to your past success.

Closing paragraph basics: choose between a promise and a call to action

You've done all the hard work - congratulations! You've almost reached the end of your security officer cover letter .

But how do you ensure recruiters, who have read your application this far, remember you?

Most security officer professionals end their cover letter with a promise - hinting at their potential and what they plan on achieving if they're hired.

Another option would be to include a call for follow-up, where you remind recruiters that you're very interested in the opportunity (and look forward to hearing from them, soon).

Choose to close your security officer cover letter in the way that best fits your personality.

No experience security officer cover letter: making the most out of your profile

Candidates who happen to have no professional experience use their security officer cover letter to stand out.

Instead of focusing on a professional achievement, aim to quantify all the relevant, transferrable skills from your life experience.

Once again, the best practice to do so would be to select an accomplishment - from your whole career history.

Another option would be to plan out your career goals and objectives: how do you see yourself growing, as a professional, in the next five years, thanks to this opportunity?

Be precise and concise about your dreams, and align them with the company vision.

Key takeaways

Winning at your job application game starts with a clear and concise security officer cover letter that:

  • Has single-spaced paragraphs, is wrapped in a one-inch margin, and uses the same font as the security officer resume;
  • Is personalized to the recruiter (using their name in the greeting) and the role (focusing on your one key achievement that answers job requirements);
  • Includes an introduction that helps you stand out and show what value you'd bring to the company;
  • Substitutes your lack of experience with an outside-of-work success, that has taught you valuable skills;
  • Ends with a call for follow-up or hints at how you'd improve the organization, team, or role.

How to Write a Cover Letter for a Security Guard Job

application letter for security job without experience

Is your resolution for 2021 to land your dream job? Or maybe you want to start a new career in a fast-paced industry where you can make a difference as an essential frontline worker. We have compiled our top five tips to help your application for a security job stand out, and it all starts with writing a great cover letter.

Applying for jobs can be a stressful and challenging, yet exciting and fun experience to imagine yourself in new environments. Applying for a security job is no different. While there are lots of ways to prepare for being a security guard, the hard truth is – there isn’t a single candidate out there whose background and experience will align 100% with the posted job description. Nevertheless, chances are, there are dozens of other candidates pursuing the same role. You can read more about how to become a security guard here .

A recruiter, especially for a security role, on average will look at approximately 20-50 resumes a day. Hence, they will short-list only a handful of applicants for a role. Naturally, most of the applicants’ resumes will go as far as receiving a quick skim. But this is where the cover letter shines! Click here to find out more on how to write a resume for a security guard role.

Typically, a cover letter is read before your resume. Therefore, a cover letter can aid you with minimizing, ideally eliminating, that gap between your profile and the job description. Additionally, it grants you an opportunity to present yourself and your fit for the role, before you even go for an interview. But like anything else, writing a good cover letter for a security role too calls for practice and following some tried and tested techniques.

Here are five tips on how to write a strong cover letter for a security job:

Tip #1 – introduce yourself.

So now you have agreed to provide a cover letter with your application! The recruiter has short-listed five potential candidates, including yourself, and every one of them has submitted a cover letter.

A good introduction to your cover letter will not only make your application stand-out among the rest of the applicants; but also allow you to uniquely introduce yourself. The introduction can start with a relatable and catchy story. The idea is to engage the recruiter in knowing more about yourself. The introduction of your cover letter can be anywhere between 2-4 sentences long. However, it shouldn’t take up more than a quarter of your entire cover letter.

For example, you can open the letter with action-inspiring sentence starters such as – “I have always been passionate about willing to lend a hand…”. Or, “Currently a security guard at XYZ company, I bring over 2 years of experience…”. Or, “Having volunteered in XYZ, I have developed skills such as…”.

Tip #2 – Tailor it!

Once you start the job hunt, it is normal to have an arsenal of cover letters at your disposal. But please don’t submit a generic cover letter with your application. The recruiters have read an enormous amount of those in their line of work. So the moment they sense that they are reading recycled material that does not resonate with the role, you will lose a fair bit of credibility. Moreover, you risk accidentally leaving in the incorrect organization’s name, or even the wrong role.

Doing some research on the company’s mission, values and news are easy ways to tailor your cover letter. If you can find common grounds to connect with the company, recruiters will take note! For instance, you can look up the corporate social responsibilities undertaken by the organization in the past 5 years. Then relate them to your passions and values.

Adding a personal touch to the cover letter can go a long way as it shows your care and commitment to the role. Besides, what better way to describe how good a fit you are for the position if you don’t tailor it? In addition to showcasing your knowledge of the organization, you can also talk a bit about the particular site you are applying for.

Say you are applying for a security role at the airport. Now imagine the amount of value your application will bear when you describe your site-specific knowledge on the building where you will be responsible for protecting assets and human lives. Moreover, tailoring your letter also lets you explain how you obtained those skills you mentioned in your resume. And then, connect them to the skills required in the job description of the role you are applying for.

Tip #3 – Your ambition

Ever wondered why one of the classic questions in an interview – “where do you see yourself in the next 5 years”, is asked? It is to understand how long you will stick with the industry, and hence – the organization. Additionally, in some cases, recruiters may also be looking to see if there are future positions or career advancements available that match your profile.

Including a roadmap to your career in the cover letter will help the recruiter understand your commitment to the company. Moreover, it also demonstrates your potential to grow within the organization. You can click here to learn more about what career path being a security guard can offer you. For example, your ambition of pursuing a life-long career in law enforcement will set you apart from someone who wants to be an accountant applying for a Security Supervisor role. Click here to learn more about how to prepare for a career in law enforcement.

Tip #4 – Keep it concise

Less is more when it comes to cover letters. Remember that recruiters have one limited resource they work off of; you guessed it – time! Your goal should be to convey as much information as possible while using the least amount of space. In the efforts to tailoring and promoting your skills in the cover letter, don’t under-estimate the value of brevity. A cover letter shouldn’t be longer than a page.

Tip #5 – PDF it!

If you have worked with Word, you already know how much of a nuisance formatting is. Now add different versions of Microsoft Word or even Operating Systems (OS) to that equation. When you submit your cover letter, you don’t know which version of Word, or OS the recruiter will be using. The last thing you want is to have the recruiter read a cover letter with scrambled formatting. One way to prevent that from happening is to convert the cover letter to PDF. This way, the formatting stays locked and intact. Also, if the job application portal doesn’t have a specific place for uploading cover letters, you can always merge your cover letter and resume in a PDF file and upload it. Just make sure the file opens with your cover letter, followed by your resume.

The reason why this one is a bonus - is because it is optional, and will not always be possible. It is to research your recruiter! Researching your recruiter before writing a cover letter is as important as researching the organization before going to an interview. If you know the name of the recruiter, instead of starting with “To Whom It May Concern”, start with Mr./Mrs. [Last Name] of the recruiter to make your cover letter more personable. For example, if the recruiter’s name is Adam Smith you can open the cover letter with ‘Dear Mr. Smith’. If you are unable to find the name of the recruiter, you can always start with ‘Dear Hiring Manager’.

By now it should be evident that cover letters significantly boost your chances of getting your desired security job. Unless it is specifically discouraged in the job advertisement; it is one of the best practices to present yourself to the employers via a cover letter. Writing a cover letter can be time-consuming and a bit laborious. You can find a sample cover letter here as a guide. However, it is worth taking the opportunity in writing a cover letter as it demonstrates your communication skills, commitment, and care for the applying role.

Security Guard Cover Letter Examples (Guide & Tips)

A cover letter is a piece of literature that is drafted with the aim of showcasing the suitability of a person for the role of a security officer. It displays the academic, professional, and work experience of the applicant. This letter mainly serves to summarize the pieces of information contained in the resume.

Who Hires them?

All organizations require a security guard . At the same time, quite a number of private entities and individuals also leverage the services.

Top examples of these are:

Though companies have the liberty to hire the guards however they wish, they would better do so via a registered company.

The following reasons underlie that very fact:

Registered companies are regulated by relevant statutory institutions. They are subsequently more likely to hire and recommend only qualified and experienced guards. Moreover, they also stand to bear any liabilities that come along with recommending substandard guards.

Background checks

Before recommending or admitting any guard to their team, the security firms will usually carry out thorough background checks . This means you are more likely to tap into persons who are well-qualified and have the expertise you need to guard your premises effectively.

Though all security personnel do more or less similar tasks of guarding premises, their specific roles differ slightly from one organization to another one. The security firms understand this fact only too well. That is why they also match the agents with the firms that need their services.

Reduced expenses

By choosing to source your guards from a firm, you get to enjoy reduced operational expenses . This is because you won’t hire them on a full-time, pensionable contract. Instead, you will only strike a deal with the firm and have the guards stationed on your premises for a specific period of time.

The process of hiring personnel is a time-consuming venture. By placing your bet on a security firm, you get to cut down the time and effort you would otherwise spend to get the job done. The same also applies to the firing of the said personnel altogether.

How to effectively display a security clearance on resume

Security clearances are a critical part of the hiring process for jobs in government, the military, and the private sector. Still, it can be tricky to know when and how to display them on a resume. Learn what you need to know about effectively including your security clearance on resumes.

What is security clearance?

Security clearance is a status granted by the U.S. federal government that allows individuals to gain access to classified information, systems, and facilities. A rigorous background check process is required to vet individuals for good character and sound judgement. Government-issued security clearances are tiered, and each tier has different criteria for issuance.

Types of security clearances

The federal government issues security clearances at three levels: (1)

  • Confidential: Grants access to information that may cause damage to national security if leaked
  • Secret: Grants access to information that could reasonably be expected to cause serious damage to national security if leaked
  • Top Secret: Grants access to information that could reasonably be expected to cause exceptional levels of damage to national security if leaked

Some officials with top secret clearance may also be granted sensitive compartmented information or special access program clearance, which allows access to certain intelligence information on a need-to-know basis. (2)

Importance of security clearances

Security clearances are designed to protect national security. If certain classified and secret information were to fall into the wrong hands, it could potentially lead to serious harm to government officials, government systems, and even U.S. citizens.

Security clearances are crucial for ensuring that individuals gaining access to this information are trustworthy and don’t have ties to bad actors. Additionally, security clearances ensure that candidates understand the gravity of their privilege and will handle the information they become privy to with extreme caution.

Deciding to include security clearance on your resume

There are a few things you need to consider when deciding whether it’s appropriate to list your security clearance on resumes.

When to list a security clearance on your resume

If security clearance is relevant to the job, you should list it on your resume. For example, it’s likely relevant if you’re using a federal resume to apply for a job in government or with the military. It can also be relevant for a private sector company that has government contracts.

Additionally, you should check the security clearance section of government job descriptions. If a security clearance is listed there, you should definitely include your clearance on your resume.

Even when listing your security clearance, make sure to tailor the other information on your resume to the job you’re applying for. It’s essential to make it obvious that you meet the security and experience requirements, or your application may not move forward in the hiring process.

Factors to consider before including security clearance

Before including your security clearance on resumes, consider the level of clearance needed for the job and whether you meet that requirement. If you don’t, you should inquire about whether the agency or employer will accept applications from candidates with lower-level clearances. You should also consider the type of information you’ll be handling and whether your clearance is relevant to that.

How to determine which level you need

If you’re applying for a government or military job that requires a security clearance, the required level will likely be listed in the job description. For private-sector employers, it may not be.

In these cases, consider the type of information you may be exposed to and whether your security clearance is relevant or would be on par with the level of information access you’ll need. If you don’t have the level of clearance you need, be honest about this during the application process.

How to specify the type of security clearance you have

In the absence of any special instructions included in the job description, you can simply specify the level of clearance (e.g., confidential) and the date it was issued. If you’re specifying security clearances in your summary or employment history sections, consider including related experience or training. Avoid disclosing classified details or sensitive information about projects you worked on or who you worked with.

Where to put security clearance on your resume

You have several options when it comes to deciding where and how to add security clearance to resumes.

In a resume summary: highlighting your clearance

Your resume summary appears at the top of the document. Including your clearance here ensures that a hiring manager knows right away whether you meet clearance criteria and whether your application warrants further review.

In your work experience section: showcasing your expertise

If you use a resume format with a separate section for listing relevant work experience, you can include information about where and for which position you were granted that clearance. This helps bring context to your training and expertise.

In an additional information section: providing context

You can adjust your resume and cover letter templates to create a separate section for your certifications or additional information. This will give you even more room to add more context about your training.

In employment history: showcasing your experience

You may decide to include your security clearance in the bullet points that describe the past roles you’ve held. This allows space to describe the job duties attached to that clearance.

Expert Tip:

If you want your security clearance prominently displayed, you may consider including it in the header of your resume, right below your name or job title. This captures the hiring manager’s attention right away and can elevate your resume to the top of the pile.

Best practices for listing security clearance

When it comes to disclosing security clearance, resumes should follow these best practices as closely as possible:

  • Do clearly and concisely disclose your security clearance level, the date you obtained it, and the date it expires
  • Don’t disclose classified details about the nature of your work or your coworkers
  • Do explain what your security clearance means for hiring managers who may not be familiar with it
  • Do mention any relevant experience or training related to the security clearance
  • Don’t exaggerate your security clearance so that it overshadows your expertise
  • Do use italics to make the details of your clearance stand out

When displayed correctly in your resume and cover letter , your security clearance disclosure can set you apart as a valuable candidate.

Examples of effective security clearance listings

If you need help figuring out how to display your security clearance, consider the following resume examples showing how to include the information in different sections.

In the resume summary

Security engineer with 12+ years of experience with cyber mitigation and response, including threat assessments and NIST-compliant incident management. Proven track record with a 27% decrease in cyber incidents under my leadership. Hold secret security clearance with the ability to handle highly sensitive information.

In the work experience section

Security Engineer - CyberPro, Incorporated, Jacksonville, FL, 10/2018 - Present

Security Analyst - SecureTech Services, Pensacola, FL, 06/2013 - 09/2018

  • Obtained Secret Security Clearance, 08/2013

Security Assistant - DefendAll Solutions, West Palm Beach, FL, 06/2012 - 05/2013

In the certifications or additional information section

Certifications:

  • CompTIA Security+, 05/2012
  • Secret Security Clearance, 08/2013
  • Background check performed by SecureTech Services of Pensacola, FL

In the employment history section

Security Analyst, 06/2013 - 09/2018 SecureTech Services, Pensacola, FL

  • Performed security threat assessments and recommended solutions, resulting in a 27% decrease in cyber incidents
  • Obtained and maintained secret security clearance for handling highly sensitive information for government projects

Though not many resume articles mention it, a well-written resume with security clearance information displayed clearly and prominently can give you an advantage in landing your dream job.

"Security clearances ensure that candidates understand the gravity of their privilege and will handle the information they become privy to with extreme caution."

Let employers know you’re qualified with effective security clearance disclosure

Security clearances are a necessary part of applying for government jobs. If you have one, use it to your advantage by adjusting your resume and cover letter examples to ensure this information is displayed in a clear and concise manner.

Though you may be hesitant about including it (and should only do so if it’s relevant to the job), having your security clearance on your resume speaks volumes about your character and qualifications. Even if it isn’t required for the position, it can get your resume noticed and may put you at the top of the “yes” pile.
