How to make a Snow Globe Terrarium

How to make a Snow Globe Terrarium

A Snow Globe Terrarium is a delightful holiday decoration that brings the magic of winter indoors.

It's a miniature winter wonderland inside a glass jar, complete with a charming scene and falling snow. Creating one is a fun and creative holiday craft project that can be enjoyed by all ages.

In this guide, we'll take you through the step-by-step process of making your very own Snow Globe Terrarium.

  • A glass jar with a lid (Mason jars or any clear glass container with a tight-fitting lid work well).
  • Miniature figurines (such as trees, animals, or holiday-themed characters).
  • Fake snow or artificial snowflakes.
  • Small pebbles or stones.
  • Craft glue (waterproof).
  • Glycerin (optional, for slowing down the snowfall).
  • Clear epoxy resin (optional, for sealing the lid).
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks.
  • Tweezers (for placing small figurines).
  • Scissors (for trimming excess materials).

Instructions

Step 1: prepare your glass jar.

  • Ensure that your glass jar is clean and dry.
  • If you want, you can decorate the outside of the jar with paint or festive ribbons for added flair.

Step 2: Arrange Your Figurines

  • Using the hot glue gun, attach your miniature figurines to the inside of the jar lid.
  • Be creative with your arrangement; you can create a snowy forest scene, a cozy cabin, or a winter wonderland with holiday characters.

Step 3: Add Pebbles

  • Place a layer of small pebbles or stones at the bottom of the jar.
  • This will provide stability for your figurines and create a natural-looking landscape.

Step 4: Create Snow

  • Sprinkle a generous amount of fake snow or artificial snowflakes over the pebbles.
  • You can adjust the thickness of the snow based on your preference.

Step 5: Add Glycerin (Optional)

  • If you want the snowfall effect to be slower, mix a few drops of glycerin with water and add it to the snow.
  • Glycerin makes the water denser and slows down the descent of the snowflakes.

Step 6: Assemble the Snow Globe

  • Carefully turn the lid with the attached figurines upside down and place it onto the jar.
  • Ensure that the figurines are positioned where you want them inside the jar.
  • Screw the lid onto the jar tightly, creating a seal.

Step 7: Seal the Lid (Optional)

  • To prevent any accidental leaks or to make your snow globe more permanent, you can seal the lid with clear epoxy resin.
  • Follow the instructions on the epoxy resin packaging carefully and allow it to dry completely.

Step 8: Shake and Enjoy

  • Give your snow globe terrarium a gentle shake, and watch as the snowflakes fall and create a winter scene.
  • Place it on a table, shelf, or windowsill to enjoy the festive ambiance it brings to your home.

Creating a Snow Globe Terrarium is a wonderful way to embrace the holiday spirit and add a touch of winter magic to your decor.

Customize it with your favorite figurines and create a unique scene that captures the enchantment of the season.

Happy crafting!

75 of the Best Arts and Crafts for Kids to Enjoy Creating

November 7, 2019 by Ana Dziengel 2 Comments

Children are natural creators, whether it’s in the (play) kitchen, on Minecraft, or when they tackle a variety of arts and crafts for kids .

In our house, classes, and camps we try a lot of projects, some amazing, some complete duds (though I don’t always talk about those!) and many just plain colorful and engaging. Whatever you try however, embrace children’s’ instinct to get messy and explore the process of making.

Between making YouTube videos, gymnastics, and swimming here are some of the arts and crafts projects we have squeezed in that my kids and students have thoroughly enjoyed.  Some develop that sense of wonder and creative passion in kids, others are just plain pretty to look at and show off to friends, all of them give kids a chance to tap into their inner tinkerer!

Arts and Crafts for Kids Categories

This post covers the following types of arts and crafts for kids. Click on any of the links to be taken directly to the section or just scroll down to see them all!

There are countless art projects for kids so I’ve collected a few of our more offbeat and favorite ideas for you to try! 15 Easy Christmas Craft Ideas Anyone Can Make This Holiday Season

art and craft holiday homework

The holidays are a time for everyone to gather 'round and appreciate the simple beauty of being together. And what better way to do so than by starting a new tradition? We think making Christmas crafts as a group is a great way to enhance holiday cheer.

All of these projects are simple enough for any beginner crafter to try, which makes them fun for loved ones of all ages. Turn a set of stockings into an advent calendar with special treats as you count down to Christmas. Old toys gain new life when they are repurposed into tree ornaments . For a quick craft that's also sweet, candy canes easily transform into the tails of festive mice party favors.

Most of these crafts take mere minutes or less to complete, which means you can deck the halls and make things merry in speedy fashion. Be sure to relish this time, though—it isn't every day that you get to make something beautiful with the people you love most.

Felt Holly Corsage

For a playful nod to the traditional Christmas pin, try these cheerful corsages. They're easy enough for a child to make but sophisticated enough for Mom to wear. Once you gather your supplies, it's a snap to create multiple corsages in a single afternoon.

Print the template and cut out. From a piece of felt, cut one 2 1/2-by-5-inch rectangle for each pair of leaves. Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise. Crease with an iron set to "wool." With the rectangle still folded, trace the template and cut out the shape using scissors; unfold. To make the four-leaf design, cross two felt shapes; using a low-temperature glue gun, attach at the center. For the two-leaf version, dab glue at the center of one felt shape, and fold, angling the leaves. Glue desired trimmings to the front and a bar pin or a barrette to the back.

To it prepare as a gift: Cut a 4-by-5-inch piece of card stock. Punch two small holes, about an inch apart, into the center of the card. Attach the pin or barrette. Using a rubber stamp and a white ink pad, stamp a "tag." Lastly, write the recipient's name and a greeting.

Silver Seed-Pod Ornament

Take a walk around your neighborhood and forage a few pinecones, poppy pods, and acorns. Then turn your haul into stunning tree ornaments by covering them in metallic paint and adding hooks.

Paper-Punched Christmas Trees

When grouped, these handmade paper trees become a sweet winter scene. To make them, use a craft punch to create paper circles in graduated sizes (the ones shown here have 6-, 7-, 8-, and 9-inch diameters). Cut the circles in half, roll them into cones, and secure them with double-sided tape. Then, cut a skewer to accommodate them. Snip the tip off the largest cone, slide it down the skewer, and secure it with hot glue. Repeat with progressively smaller cones, overlapping them by about a half-inch. For the top cone, do not snip a hole; just glue it onto the skewer. Then insert the skewer into the wood bead's hole and glue it into place.

Felt Christmas Stocking with Stars

Add personality to your stockings by making them yourself. For this jolly set, simply download our template and trace the pattern onto two pieces of felt. Attach pre-cut stars, then sew the felt together to make a complete stocking.

Paper Snowflakes

Grace your panes with paper snowflakes, attaching them with poster putty. Or, tape them together to create a paper snowflake wreath or garland.

Threaded Pomanders

We created geometric patterns by weaving hot-pink, silver, and gold cords around embedded cloves for these thoroughly modern pomanders: Insert cloves into citrus at points of an arrow, diamond, or other shape, spacing them evenly around fruits' circumference. Tie one end of cord around head of a clove, leaving a 2-inch tail. Wrap cord around each clove head to form desired shape. Some designs (like diamonds) may require tying off cord after a couple of shapes and retying cord to another clove. Continue wrapping cord around cloves until you reach starting point. Tie together end of cord and tail left at start. Trim off any excess.

Shoe-Organizer Advent Calendar

Make the countdown to Christmas even more exciting with this DIY advent calendar. Just paint the dates onto a shoe organizer and fill each pocket with candy, a few wrapped gifts, heart-felt notes, and more.

Candy Cane Mice

It's the kids who will be doing the nibbling when these sweet mice are around. A combination of two Christmas motifs—mice and candy canes—these tiny fabric creatures, with their red-and-white-striped tails, make fitting favors at a holiday dinner or delightful gifts for children to give to friends and relatives.

Cookie-Cutter Ornaments

These cookie-cutter ornaments make sentimental gifts; luckily they're faster to make than cookies are to bake. Use inexpensive aluminum cutters and choose patterned papers or pictures photocopied onto card stock to personalize a set for your whole family.

Snow Dioramas

Capture the season under glass—and check lots of folks off your list easily with these mini wintry worlds that combine the cuteness of snow globes with the beauty of bell-jar terrariums. Using the lid as a base, form a snow-covered mountain or frosty iceberg with a mound of clay. (We used glitter to mimic the sparkle of snow). Figurines such as these skiers and penguins can be found at hobby shops, and the jars can be bought in bulk.

To make one, mold clay into mounds of snow. (To create a pond, first mold clay onto a small mirror.) Let dry. Glue clay (or a mirror) to the underside of the jar's lid. Brush clay with glue, and cover with glitter; let dry. Brush figurines with glue, and set in place; let dry. Line the inner rim of the jar with silicone adhesive. Carefully invert the jar over your scene, and screw to the lid; let dry.

Wired Wreath

Deck the halls—or your front door—with a petite bough, formed from a wire coat hanger and greenery left over from garland making. Using wire cutters, trim off the hanger top, as shown. Push the bottom of the hanger inward to shape it into an upside-down V. Wrap floral wire around entire hanger, forming a web in the space between the hanger wires. Wrap sprigs of greenery together with floral wire to create several small bundles. Wire greenery to the hanger, overlapping bundles to create a full appearance. For a festive finishing touch, add a ribbon bow.

Embroidered Name Christmas Stocking

Your handwriting can turn your Christmas stockings into heirlooms. The personalized, embroidered keepsakes will bring joy year after year.

Pinecone Elves

Memo to Santa's assistants from Head Elf: It has come to our attention that these elf figurines are a joy to make. All you need are pinecones, pipe cleaners, and other simple supplies (no toy-making expertise necessary). Best of all, the charming sprites have many applications. They can be used as decorations on a mantel, under a tree, or atop presents. We expect the little guys to be big hits this Christmas.

Paper-Star Gift Toppers

Your gifts will shine above the rest when you adorn then with these paper-star toppers. Using the template, cut out the design onto cardstock; accordion fold the strip, then connect the ends at the remaining tab. It's that easy.

Painted Christmas Stockings

The secret to dashing off this pretty basket-weave motif is the tool: Just dip the end of a 1-inch foam brush in fabric paint, then tap it in three parallel lines. Change directions and repeat until you have a band across the top, or go with the flow down to the toes.

(Tip: For straight, even rows, keep the felt brush parallel to the top or side of the stocking as you work, says former Living home editor Lorna Aragon.)

The building has the unique construction – wooden structure trusses overlap the space of 44.86 square meters without any intermediate supports. After 1917, Manezh served as a garage for government vehicles. And since 1957 it has been continuously used for exhibitions and public events. In 2004, the building was severely damaged by fire. Renovated in 2005 the Manezh doubled its area. Nowadays it is one of the leading Moscow exhibition halls. There are two exhibition spaces, a conference room and a cafe on the third-floor observation deck. The Manezh hosts numerous fairs, festivals, and exhibitions.

Ukrainian president says push into Russia’s Kursk region is to create a buffer zone there

(Ukrainian Armed Force via AP)

KYIV, Ukraine — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday the daring military incursion into Russia’s Kursk region aims to create a buffer zone to prevent further attacks by Moscow across the border.

It was the first time Zelenskyy clearly stated the aim of the operation, which was launched on Aug. 6. Previously, he had said the operation aimed to protect communities in the bordering Sumy region from constant shelling.

Zelenskyy said “it is now our primary task in defensive operations overall: to destroy as much Russian war potential as possible and conduct maximum counteroffensive actions. This includes creating a buffer zone on the aggressor’s territory -– our operation in the Kursk region,” he said in his nightly address.

This weekend, Ukraine destroyed a key bridge in the region and struck a second one nearby, disrupting supply lines as it pressed a stunning cross-border incursion that began Aug. 6, officials said.

Pro-Kremlin military bloggers acknowledged the destruction of the first bridge on the Seim River near the town of Glushkovo will impede deliveries of supplies to Russian forces repelling Ukraine’s incursion, although Moscow could still use pontoons and smaller bridges. Ukraine’s air force chief, Lt. Gen. Mykola Oleshchuk, on Friday released a video of an airstrike that cut the bridge in two.

Less than two days later, Ukrainian troops hit a second bridge in Russia, according to Oleshchuk and Russian regional Gov. Alexei Smirnov.

As of Sunday morning, there were no officials giving the exact location of the second bridge attack. But Russian Telegram channels claimed that a second bridge over the Seim, in the village of Zvannoe, had been struck.

(Russian Defense Ministry Press Service photo via AP)

According to Russia’s Mash news site, the attacks left only one intact bridge in the area. The Associated Press could not immediately verify these claims. If confirmed, the Ukrainian strikes would further complicate Moscow’s attempts to replenish its forces and evacuate civilians.

Glushkovo is about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) north of the Ukrainian border, and approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) northwest of the main battle zone in Kursk. Zvannoe is located another 8 kilometers (5 miles) to the northwest.

Kyiv previously has said little about the goals of its push into Russia with tanks and other armored vehicles, the largest attack on the country since World War II, which took the Kremlin by surprise and saw scores of villages and hundreds of prisoners fall into Ukrainian hands.

The Ukrainians drove deep into the region in several directions, facing little resistance and sowing chaos and panic as tens of thousands of civilians fled. Ukraine’s Commander in Chief, Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, claimed last week that his forces had advanced across 1,000 square kilometers (390 square miles) of the region, although it was not possible to independently verify what Ukrainian forces effectively control.

Buffer zones sought by both sides

In his remarks on creating a buffer zone, Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces “achieved good and much-needed results.”

Analysts say that although Ukraine could try to consolidate its gains inside Russia, it would be risky, given Kyiv’s limited resources, because its own supply lines extending deep into Kursk would be vulnerable.

The incursion has proven Ukraine’s ability to seize the initiative and has boosted its morale, which was sapped by a failed counteroffensive last summer and months of grinding Russian gains in the eastern Donbas region.

For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin said while visiting China in May that Moscow’s offensive that month in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region was aimed at creating a buffer zone there.

That offensive opened a new front and displaced thousands of Ukrainians. The attacks were a response to Ukrainian shelling of Russia’s Belgorod region, Putin said.

“I have said publicly that if it continues, we will be forced to create a security zone, a sanitary zone,” he said. “That’s what we are doing.”

Ukraine’s move into Kursk resembled its lightning operation from September 2022, led by Syrskyi, in which its forces reclaimed control of the northeastern Kharkiv region after taking advantage of Russian manpower shortages and a lack of field fortifications.

Zelenskyy seeks permission to strike deeper into Russia

On Saturday, Zelenskyy urged Kyiv’s allies to lift remaining restrictions on using Western weapons to attack targets deeper in Russia, including in Kursk, saying his troops could deprive Moscow “of any ability to advance and cause destruction” if granted sufficient long-range capabilities.

“It is crucial that our partners remove barriers that hinder us from weakening Russian positions in the way this war demands. … The bravery of our soldiers and the resilience of our combat brigades compensate for the lack of essential decisions from our partners,” Zelenskyy said on the social platform X.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry and pro-Kremlin bloggers alleged U.S.-made HIMARS launchers have been used to destroy bridges on the Seim. These claims could not be independently verified.

Ukraine’s leaders have repeatedly sought authorization for long-range strikes on Russian air bases and other infrastructure used to pummel Ukraine’s energy facilities and other civilian targets, including with retrofitted Soviet-era “glide bombs” attacking Ukraine’s industrial east in recent months.

Moscow also appears to have increased attacks on Kyiv, targeting it Sunday with ballistic missiles for a third time this month, according to the head of the municipal military administration. Serhii Popko said in a Telegram post the “almost identical” August strikes on the capital “most likely used” North Korean-supplied KN-23 missiles.

Another attempt to target Kyiv followed at about 7 a.m. Popko said, this time with Iskander cruise missiles. Ukrainian air defenses struck down all the missiles fired in both attacks on the city, he said.

Fears mount for Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

Elsewhere, the head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency said Saturday the safety situation at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is deteriorating.

International Atomic Energy Agency head Rafael Grossi urged “maximum restraint from all sides” after an IAEA team at the plant reported an explosive carried by a drone detonated just outside its protected area.

According to Grossi, the impact was “close to the essential water sprinkle ponds” and about 100 meters (100 yards) from the only power line supplying the plant. The IAEA team at the plant has reported intense military activity in the surrounding area in the past week, it said.

Kyiv and Moscow have traded blame for attacks near the power plant since it was captured by Russian forces early in the 2022 invasion, including a fire at the facility last weekend. Grossi said the blaze had caused “considerable damage,” but posed no immediate danger to nuclear safety.

Belarus says it’s deploying more troops on Ukraine border

Russian ally Belarus has massed “nearly a third” of its army along its border with Ukraine, according to authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Lukashenko told Russian state TV that Minsk was responding to the deployment of more than 120,000 Ukrainian troops to the 1,084-kilometer (674 mile) frontier. Belarus’ professional army numbers upward of 60,000.

Ukrainian border force spokesman Andrii Demchenko said Sunday it had not observed any sign of a Belarusian buildup.

Lukashenko, in power for three decades, has relied on Russian support to suppress the biggest protests in Belarus’ post-Soviet history after his 2020 reelection, widely seen as a sham both at home and abroad. He allowed Russian troops to use Belarus’ territory to invade Ukraine and let Moscow deploy some tactical nuclear weapons on its soil.
