Make a Blood Spatter Lab for High School
It is designed to let students experiment with the different Low and Medium Velocity blood spatter patterns that can be generated in various crime scene scenarios.
Forensics: How Does It Matter? Measure the Spatter!
To find out more about being a forensic scientist, you can check out the Science Buddies career profile on forensic science technicians . In this forensics science project, you will investigate how the size of blood spatter changes depending on the height that the blood was dropped from, but you will be using fake blood instead of real blood.
Science Fair CSI: Can You Predict the Spatter?
To predict where the blood shedding event occurred in a crime scene, using fake blood and blood-spatter analysis.
Blood Spatter: How to Make Spatter
This is the first part of a 2 part blood spatter series. In this video, students will see how to successfully create spatter, to be analyzed in part 2.
Project 1.1.6: Blood Spatter Analysis
Using what you have learned in the previous activity about experimental design, you will design your own experiment to investigate how height affects bloodstain patterns.
Engage Students with a Forensics Lab on Blood Spatter
Bloodstain pattern analysis is a branch of forensic science that examines bloodstain patterns at crimes scenes. The size, shape, and distribution of bloodstains provides clues about a crime or accident. I used a variation of this lab from the Trendy Science Teacher. I modified a few details, like limiting to 7 foot drops, because of room ...
The physics of blood spatter
To apply this method, the researchers created spatter patterns of human blood under controlled conditions. For each of 40 separate blood stains, they determined its width and impact angle, and, using a commercial 3D surface scanner, measured the volume of the stain, from which they found the volume of the original drop.
Blood Spatter Inquiry Lab
Most students create an experiment in which they drop blood from various heights (1ft, 3 ft, 5 ft, 7 ft, etc.). They use a pipette to drop blood onto their chart paper and then measure the diameter of their blood stains. Most students choose to create a chart similar to this one. During the lab, I walk around and discuss findings with the students.
PDF Blood Spatter Analysis Lab
Blood Spatter Analysis is a field of forensic science that deals with the physical properties of blood and the patterns produced under different conditions as a result of various forces applied to the source of blood. The patterns left by falling, projected, or smeared blood can help the forensic investigator interpret and reconstruct what has ...

Description Following graphical and vector analysis, this lab exercise is an open-ended or discovery activity. Students receive bloodstain pattern evidence from a crime scene. They must then answer a series of questions through inquiry, observation, measurement, and analysis. To complete this challenge, students reconstruct the evidence through four standard models to derive qualitative ...
Advanced Techniques in Blood Spatter Analysis Lab Activity
Model how a group of blood stains can be analyzed in order to determine the approximate position of the victim when blood exited the body. Simulate a crime scene investigation, using the bloodstain pattern information collected at a crime scene, and statements given to the police oficers in order to determine the sequence of events in an ...
Crime Scene Science: Solving Mysteries by Investigating Blood Stains
In crime scenes where people are wounded, investigators apply principles of blood spatter analysis by taking measurements, such as of the diameter of the blood spatter (drops), to figure out what happened. How do you think the diameter of spatter changes as blood is dropped from different heights?

Here's the lowdown on one of the more gruesome areas, Blood Pattern Analysis, also known as BPA, bloodstain pattern, blood spatter or splatter analysis. We've also included a tried and tested recipe for creating fake blood that has a realistic consistency so you can make your own and try your own experiment and analysis.
Blood Spatter Analysis
Blood spatter analysis (or bloodstain pattern analysis) is a forensic technique in which stains of blood at a crime scene are examined to provide information about the incident, such as how or where the victim was killed. Blood spatter analysis includes the process of examining blood that has struck a surface, and applying knowledge regarding ...

The activities in this program consider bloodstains on a single target surface such as a floor. If multiple surfaces are introduced, complexity significantly increases. The scenario involves a wall as the target plane. By conducting the activities listed below students will be able to progressively develop the skills required to determine the 'Area of Origin' of the blood droplets. What ...
SPLAT LESSON
During this lesson you will learn about blood splatter, make predictions and then conduct experiments to learn more about how blood drops behave, and how they can help you get to the bottom of a crime!

Lab Worksheet and Blood Drop PDF. For this lab students will use the angle of impact of blood spatter from a simulated scene to determine what happened in a case. Students will need a ruler with millimeter markings to complete the lab. To use this lab make a copy of the google doc worksheet below and download the PDF of the blood drops.
