What Should Be Included in a College Application Letter?

You’re a top achiever in high school, involved in clubs and organizations and excited to start college. Applying for a scholarship is a logical next step in your college preparation journey. How can you differentiate your application from the thousands of other student leaders looking for funding? A dynamic, content-rich biography is the first step in gaining the attention of a scholarship review committee. Start by becoming familiar with the scholarship requirements and brainstorm a list of your qualities and experiences.

Strong Introduction

A winning biography begins with a captivating introduction. Your opening sentence serves as a way to get the reader to read more. Begin with a sentence that describes who you are and why you're an ideal choice for the scholarship. For example, if you're applying for a flute scholarship, explain when you began playing and why it's so important to you. Use the rest of the introduction to show off your special attributes. The reader should feel compelled to learn more about you as a scholarship candidate. You may even want to write it after finishing the biography to ensure you have accurately outlined your essay.

Showcase Your Talents

A biography should not be a list of your accomplishments but rather an opportunity to highlight why and how you’re talented. You may be tempted to write a paragraph about what you did in high school, but reserve this for an activity résumé. Instead, describe one experience that you feel best highlights who you are as a student or leader. For example, share a story about a community service project you initiated and what you and others learned from the experience. Explain how it taught you about teamwork and serving others. A reader will be impressed with your reflection on a real-life experience, and it will showcase your talents.

Stay on Message

Don’t be afraid to share your thoughts and feelings, but be certain they’re relevant to the scholarship. For example, a poignant story about a family hardship may seem like a good way to win the hearts of the decision-makers, but if it’s irrelevant to the focus of the scholarship, it may do more harm than good. On the other hand, if you took care of an ailing grandparent and through this experience decided you wanted to work in health care, the story might be relevant to your scholarship application. The ideal biography provides a personal story that serves as a connection between the scholarship focus and the applicant.

Biography Don'ts

When you're writing a biographical statement, don't dwell on tragedies you've encountered in your life. Instead, stay positive and describe the ways you've been successful and goal-oriented. Similarly, avoid using money as a main reason you're interested in the scholarship. Focus on why your accomplishments are a good match for scholarship recognition. Your ethnicity or socio-economic background should not be a main focus of your scholarship biography unless the criterion indicates this is a requirement for selection. Finally, be authentic in the vocabulary you use. The scholarship committee will be more interested in your biography if it comes from the heart and sounds like it was written with personal passion.

How to Write a Professional Bio as a College Student.

A well-written bio is a great tool to have in your professional toolkit. Whether for a job application, networking event, or as an introduction for future employers, your bio is a great way to share who you are and highlight your accomplishments. It can also be a great addition to your LinkedIn profile’s “Summary” section.

Depending on your year in college, your biography will vary in length and topics. For example, a senior may have more work or internship experience to write about than a first-year student, and can describe his/her job roles, skills, and professional interests. On the other hand, first-year students could focus their bio on their background, educational goals, and hobbies. In both cases, your bio should craft an engaging narrative that emphasizes your interests and personality.

Bios are written in the third person and are typically one or two paragraphs, depending on your level of experience. Your bio should start with your name and a quick sentence that describes your basic background. This can include your college, year in school, academic focus, and professional interest. Your bio should be brief, concise, and clear.

Establish a Background Story

Highlighting your background will give the reader an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of your personal narrative, which may not be evident on your resume. Also, consider including recent events, such as studying abroad or volunteering. Find a couple of moments in your life that have impacted your identity or interests, and briefly, mention them. This will personalize your bio and help you stand out from your peers.

Explain Your Interests

Next, you will want to elaborate on your interests. For students with a significant amount of professional experience, this will focus more on career goals. If you don’t feel you have enough job experience to write about or are not sure about your professional goals, describe your academic or extracurricular interests. Feel free to add any hobbies that highlight your uniqueness, such as painting, running marathons, or cooking. Remember, your personal biography is an area to describe your personality that is not as easily communicated on your resume.

Emphasize How You Can Add Value

Lastly, you want to end on a high note by emphasizing how you can add value. Depending on where you use this bio, this sentence or two can refer to adding value to a company, team, or event. Highlight your unique talents and skills that would interest your audience. Rather than explicitly stating, “I can add value by…,” share this message subtly. You want your reader to understand that you are a well-rounded individual and professional who can contribute significant knowledge and experience.

There is no order to include all of this information. Play with the format and see what works best for your narrative. Although it can be difficult to summarize your life in one paragraph, this is a useful tool for crafting a positive image of yourself for potential professional networks. Below are two examples:

Example 1 (for first-years and sophomores):

Alison Johnson is finishing her first year at DePaul University where she is interested in business. Although she has yet to declare a major, she’s considering finance or marketing. After watching her parents run a restaurant for years, she knew at a very young age that she also wanted to go into business. In high school, Alison waited tables at the family restaurant during the summer and was fascinated by the many working parts it takes to operate a successful business. From this experience, she learned the value of hard work, efficiency, and communication. In the future, she hopes to continue her parents’ legacy and run her own five-star restaurant in downtown Chicago. Alison spends her spare time singing in her church choir and cooking for friends and family.

Example 2 (for juniors and seniors):

Jared Smith is a senior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he is majoring in International Studies with a concentration in Latin America. His interest in international development began during the fall semester of 2012 when he had the opportunity to study abroad in Peru. He learned about the inequalities affecting indigenous communities, experienced the Peruvian culture, and became proficient in Spanish. Inspired by this international experience, Jared interned with the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, conducting research on food security in Latin America. Jared aspires to pursue a career in international development and write policy for a government agency. When he is not busy reading about current affairs in Latin America, he enjoys playing intramural basketball and training for the Chicago marathon.

11. I have always been passionate about music and loved playing the guitar. I decided to major in music theory and composition to take my skills to the next level. With help from different mentors, I was able to compose several pieces and even record my own music. My work was even recognised in several competitions. After graduation, I started to work as a freelance composer for companies and musicians. I am now looking to use my knowledge of music production to pursue a career in the music industry.

12. Growing up I was active in several sports such as basketball and running. My interest in physical activity motivated me to pursue a career in sports science. During college, I was able to learn various exercise physiology principles and anatomy physiology. I was also able to gain experience by leading fitness classes and working as a personal trainer. I am currently working towards obtaining a postgraduate degree in Sport Psychology and hope to use my skills to develop effective sport training regimes.

13. After spending time abroad during high school, I developed a passion for foreign languages. I decided to major in Spanish Language and Literature and was able to gain experience by working with local Spanish-speaking patients as a medical translator. I was also able to gain insight into other cultures by participating in several cultural exchange programs. I’m now working as a freelance journalist and have applied for a master’s degree in journalism to pursue my dream of becoming a reporter.

17. After developing an interest in psychology and mental health in high school, I decided to pursue a degree in the field. During college, I was able to gain experience working in local mental health organizations and also gained additional knowledge by attending workshops and seminars. I was even able to gain insights about diverse cultures by interning abroad. Upon graduating, I started working as a mental health counselor and am now looking to pursue a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology.

18. I have been interested in web development since high school and decided to pursue a career in the field. During college, I was able to gain experience by completing various freelance web development projects and interning for start-ups. I was even able to study abroad and learn more about programming languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Web Development and am now working as a full-time web developer.

20. All throughout school, I strived for academic excellence and decided to major in Accounting and Finance. How to Write a Biography: A 7-Step Guide [+Template]

From time to time, nonfiction authors become so captivated by a particular figure from either the present or the past, that they feel compelled to write an entire book about their life. Whether casting them as heroes or villains, there is an interesting quality in their humanity that compels these authors to revisit their life paths and write their story.

However, portraying someone’s life on paper in a comprehensive and engaging way requires solid preparation. If you’re looking to write a biography yourself, in this post we’ll share a step-by-step blueprint that you can follow. 

How to write a biography: 

1. Seek permission when possible 

2. research your subject thoroughly, 3. do interviews and visit locations, 4. organize your findings, 5. identify a central thesis, 6. write it using narrative elements, 7. get feedback and polish the text.

While you technically don’t need permission to write about public figures (or deceased ones), that doesn't guarantee their legal team won't pursue legal action against you. Author Kitty Kelley was sued by Frank Sinatra before she even started to write His Way , a biography that paints Ol Blue Eyes in a controversial light. (Kelley ended up winning the lawsuit, however).

Whenever feasible, advise the subject’s representatives of your intentions. If all goes according to plan, you’ll get a green light to proceed, or potentially an offer to collaborate. It's a matter of common sense; if someone were to write a book about you, you would likely want to know about it well prior to publication. So, make a sincere effort to reach out to their PR staff to negotiate an agreement or at least a mutual understanding of the scope of your project. 

At the same time, make sure that you still retain editorial control over the project, and not end up writing a puff piece that treats its protagonist like a saint or hero. No biography can ever be entirely objective, but you should always strive for a portrayal that closely aligns with facts and reality.

If you can’t get an answer from your subject, or you’re asked not to proceed forward, you can still accept the potential repercussions and write an unauthorized biography . The “rebellious act” of publishing without consent indeed makes for great marketing, though it’ll likely bring more headaches with it too. 

✋ Please note that, like other nonfiction books, if you intend to release your biography with a publishing house , you can put together a book proposal to send to them before you even write the book. If they like it enough, they might pay you an advance to write it.

Once you’ve settled (or not) the permission part, it’s time to dive deep into your character’s story.  

Deep and thorough research skills are the cornerstone of every biographer worth their salt. To paint a vivid and accurate portrait of someone's life, you’ll have to gather qualitative information from a wide range of reliable sources. 

Start with the information already available, from books on your subject to archival documents, then collect new ones firsthand by interviewing people or traveling to locations. 

Browse the web and library archives

Put your researcher hat on and start consuming any piece on your subject you can find, from their Wikipedia page to news articles, interviews, TV and radio appearances, YouTube videos, podcasts, books, magazines, and any other media outlets they may have been featured in. 

Establish a system to orderly collect the information you find 一 even seemingly insignificant details can prove valuable during the writing process, so be sure to save them. 

Depending on their era, you may find most of the information readily available online, or you may need to search through university libraries for older references.

For his landmark biography of Alexander Hamilton, Ron Chernow spent untold hours at Columbia University’s library , reading through the Hamilton family papers, visiting the New York Historical Society, as well as interviewing the archivist of the New York Stock Exchange, and so on. The research process took years, but it certainly paid off. Chernow discovered that Hamilton created the first five securities originally traded on Wall Street. This finding, among others, revealed his significant contributions to shaping the current American financial and political systems, a legacy previously often overshadowed by other founding fathers. Today Alexander Hamilton is one of the best-selling biographies of all time, and it has become a cultural phenomenon with its own dedicated musical. 

Besides reading documents about your subject, research can help you understand the world that your subject lived in. 

Try to understand their time and social environment

Many biographies show how their protagonists have had a profound impact on society through their philosophical, artistic, or scientific contributions. But at the same time, it’s worth it as a biographer to make an effort to understand how their societal and historical context influenced their life’s path and work.

An interesting example is Stephen Greenblatt’s Will in the World . Finding himself limited by a lack of verified detail surrounding William Shakespeare's personal life, Greenblatt, instead, employs literary interpretation and imaginative reenactments to transport readers back to the Elizabethan era. The result is a vivid (though speculative) depiction of the playwright's life, enriching our understanding of his world.

Many readers enjoy biographies that transport them to a time and place, so exploring a historical period through the lens of a character can be entertaining in its own right. The Diary of Samuel Pepys became a classic not because people were enthralled by his life as an administrator, but rather from his meticulous and vivid documentation of everyday existence during the Restoration period.

Once you’ve gotten your hands on as many secondary sources as you can find, you’ll want to go hunting for stories first-hand from people who are (or were) close to your subject.

With all the material you’ve been through, by now you should already have a pretty good picture of your protagonist. But you’ll surely have some curiosities and missing dots in their character development to figure out, which you can only get by interviewing primary sources.

Interview friends and associates

This part is more relevant if your subject is contemporary, and you can actually meet up or call with relatives, friends, colleagues, business partners, neighbors, or any other person related to them. 

In writing the popular biography of Steve Jobs, Walter Isaacson interviewed more than one hundred people, including Jobs’s family, colleagues, former college mates, business rivals, and the man himself.

When you conduct your interviews, make sure to record them with high quality audio you can revisit later. Then use tools like Otter.ai or Descript to transcribe them 一 it’ll save you countless hours. 

You can approach the interview with a specific set of questions, or follow your curiosity blindly, trying to uncover revealing stories and anecdotes about your subject. Whatever your method, author and biography editor Tom Bromley suggests that every interviewer arrives prepared, "Show that you’ve done your work. This will help to put the interviewee at ease, and get their best answers.” 

Bromley also places emphasis on the order in which you conduct interviews. “You may want to interview different members of the family or friends first, to get their perspective on something, and then go directly to the main interviewee. You'll be able to use that knowledge to ask sharper, more specific questions.” 

Finally, consider how much time you have with each interviewee. If you only have a 30-minute phone call with an important person, make it count by asking directly the most pressing questions you have. And, if you find a reliable source who is also particularly willing to help, conduct several interviews and ask them, if appropriate, to write a foreword as part of the book’s front matter .

Sometimes an important part of the process is packing your bags, getting on a plane, and personally visiting significant places in your character’s journey.

Visit significant places in their life

A place, whether that’s a city, a rural house, or a bodhi tree, can carry a particular energy that you can only truly experience by being there. In putting the pieces together about someone’s life, it may be useful to go visit where they grew up, or where other significant events of their lives happened. It will be easier to imagine what they experienced, and better tell their story. 

In researching The Lost City of Z , author David Grann embarked on a trek through the Amazon, retracing the steps of British explorer Percy Fawcett. This led Grann to develop new theories about the circumstances surrounding the explorer's disappearance.

Hopefully, you won’t have to deal with jaguars and anacondas to better understand your subject’s environment, but try to walk into their shoes as much as possible. 

Once you’ve researched your character enough, it’s time to put together all the puzzle pieces you collected so far. 

Take the bulk of notes, media, and other documents you’ve collected, and start to give them some order and structure. A simple way to do this is by creating a timeline. 

Create a chronological timeline

It helps to organize your notes chronologically 一 from childhood to the senior years, line up the most significant events of your subject’s life, including dates, places, names and other relevant bits.

You should be able to divide their life into distinct periods, each with their unique events and significance. Based on that, you can start drafting an outline of the narrative you want to create.  

Draft a story outline 

Since a biography entails writing about a person’s entire life, it will have a beginning, a middle, and an end. You can pick where you want to end the story, depending on how consequential the last years of your subject were. But the nature of the work will give you a starting character arc to work with. 

To outline the story then, you could turn to the popular Three-Act Structure , which divides the narrative in three main parts. In a nutshell, you’ll want to make sure to have the following:

  • Act 1. Setup : Introduce the protagonist's background and the turning points that set them on a path to achieve a goal. 
  • Act 2. Confrontation : Describe the challenges they encounter, both internal and external, and how they rise to them. Then..
  • Act 3. Resolution : Reach a climactic point in their story in which they succeed (or fail), showing how they (and the world around them) have changed as a result. 

Only one question remains before you begin writing: what will be the main focus of your biography?

Think about why you’re so drawn to your subject to dedicate years of your life to recounting their own. What aspect of their life do you want to highlight? Is it their evil nature, artistic genius, or visionary mindset? And what evidence have you got to back that up? Find a central thesis or focus to weave as the main thread throughout your narrative.

Or find a unique angle

If you don’t have a particular theme to explore, finding a distinct angle on your subject’s story can also help you distinguish your work from other biographies or existing works on the same subject.

Plenty of biographies have been published about The Beatles 一 many of which have different focuses and approaches: 

  • Philip Norman's Shout is sometimes regarded as leaning more towards a pro-Lennon and anti-McCartney stance, offering insights into the band's inner dynamics. 
  • Ian McDonald's Revolution in the Head closely examines their music track by track, shifting the focus back to McCartney as a primary creative force. 
  • Craig Brown's One Two Three Four aims to capture their story through anecdotes, fan letters, diary entries, and interviews. 
  • Mark Lewisohn's monumental three-volume biography, Tune In , stands as a testament to over a decade of meticulous research, chronicling every intricate detail of the Beatles' journey.

Finally, consider that biographies are often more than recounting the life of a person. Similar to how Dickens’ Great Expectations is not solely about a boy named Pip (but an examination and critique of Britain’s fickle, unforgiving class system), a biography should strive to illuminate a broader truth — be it social, political, or human — beyond the immediate subject of the book. 

Once you’ve identified your main focus or angle, it’s time to write a great story.

While biographies are often highly informative, they do not have to be dry and purely expository in nature . You can play with storytelling elements to make it an engaging read. 

You could do that by thoroughly detailing the setting of the story , depicting the people involved in the story as fully-fledged characters , or using rising action and building to a climax when describing a particularly significant milestone of the subject’s life.

Hook the reader from the start

Just because you're honoring your character's whole life doesn't mean you have to begin when they said their first word. Starting from the middle or end of their life can be more captivating as it introduces conflicts and stakes that shaped their journey.

When he wrote about Christopher McCandless in Into the Wild , author Jon Krakauer didn’t open his subject’s childhood and abusive family environment. Instead, the book begins with McCandless hitchhiking his way into the wilderness, and subsequently being discovered dead in an abandoned bus. By starting in the middle of the action  in medias res, Krakauer hooks the reader’s interest, before tracing back the causes and motivations that led McCandless to die alone in that bus in the first place.

You can bend the timeline to improve the reader’s reading experience throughout the rest of the story too…

Play with flashback 

While biographies tend to follow a chronological narrative, you can use flashbacks to tell brief stories or anecdotes when appropriate. For example, if you were telling the story of footballer Lionel Messi, before the climax of winning the World Cup with Argentina, you could recall when he was just 13 years old, giving an interview to a local newspaper, expressing his lifelong dream of playing for the national team. 

Used sparsely and intentionally, flashbacks can add more context to the story and keep the narrative interesting. Just like including dialogue does…

Reimagine conversations

Recreating conversations that your subject had with people around them is another effective way to color the story. Dialogue helps the reader imagine the story like a movie, providing a deeper sensory experience.

One thing is trying to articulate the root of Steve Jobs’ obsession with product design, another would be to quote his father , teaching him how to build a fence when he was young: “You've got to make the back of the fence just as good looking as the front of the fence. Even though nobody will see it, you will know. And that will show that you're dedicated to making something perfect.”

Unlike memoirs and autobiographies, in which the author tells the story from their personal viewpoint and enjoys greater freedom to recall conversations, biographies require a commitment to facts. So, when recreating dialogue, try to quote directly from reliable sources like personal diaries, emails, and text messages. You could also use your interview scripts as an alternative to dialogue. As Tom Bromley suggests, “If you talk with a good amount of people, you can try to tell the story from their perspective, interweaving different segments and quoting the interviewees directly.”

These are just some of the story elements you can use to make your biography more compelling. Once you’ve finished your manuscript, it’s a good idea to ask for feedback. 

If you’re going to publish your own  biography, you’ll have to polish it to professional standards. After leaving your work to rest for a while, look at it with fresh eyes and edit your own manuscript eliminating passive voice, filler words, and redundant adverbs.

Then, have a professional editor give you a general assessment. They’ll look at the structure and shape of your manuscript and tell you which parts need to be expanded on or cut. As someone who edited and commissioned several biographies, Tom Bromley points out that a professional “will look at the sources used and assess whether they back up the points made, or if more are needed. They would also look for context, and whether or not more background information is needed for the reader to understand the story fully. And they might check your facts, too.”  

In addition to structural editing, you may want to have someone copy-edit and proofread your work.

 7 Quick Tips for Student Biography Projects 

Completing a biography is an extremely valuable learning experience because it provides students with an opportunity to reinforce research skills, enhance writing skills, encourage critical thinking, foster creativity, and cultivate empathy. It might also encourage students to apply some of the lessons learned to their own lives.

 1. Review the Definitions

Take a moment to review the definition of a biography. You can also use this time to focus on the differences and similarities between a biography and an autobiography. This leads nicely into a short discussion about word parts (auto, bio, and graph).

2. Start with a Mentor Text or Example

Starting the project with a mentor text or example will give students a strong frame of reference for crafting their own biographies. Here are some picture book biographies that will work well for this purpose. Use the mentor text or example for students to analyze the main characteristics of a biography, including:

  • Language/Style

It is helpful to frame your essential questions around the necessary components of a biography. If the students can answer most of the essential questions in their biography, they will most likely have a successful finished product. Here are some common essential questions used for biographical writing:

  • When and where was this person born?
  • What kind of childhood did this person have?
  • Did this person receive an education? If so, what was it like?
  • What was this person’s family life like? If possible, include details about parents, siblings, spouses, and children.
  • What obstacles did this person face?
  • What did this person accomplish?

A biography is a written account of the series of events that make up a person's life. Some of those events are going to be pretty boring, so you'll need to try to make your account as interesting as possible!

Every student will write a biography at some point, but the level of detail and sophistication will differ. A fourth grade biography will be much different from a middle school-level biography or a high school or college-level biography.

However, each biography will include the basic details. The first information you should gather in your research will include biographical details and facts. You must use a trustworthy resource to ensure that your information is accurate.

Using research note cards , collect the following data, carefully recording the source for each piece of information:

Including Basic Details

  • Date and place of birth and death
  • Family information
  • Lifetime accomplishments
  • Major events of life
  • Effects/impact on society, historical significance

While this information is necessary to your project, these dry facts, on their own, don't really make a very good biography. Once you've found these basics, you'll want to dig a little deeper.

You choose a certain person because you think he or she is interesting, so you certainly don't want to burden your paper with an inventory of boring facts. Your goal is to impress your reader!

Start off with great first sentence . It's a good idea to begin with a really interesting statement, a little-known fact, or really intriguing event.

You should avoid starting out with a standard but boring line like:

"Meriwether Lewis was born in Virginia in 1774."

Instead, try starting with something like this:

"Late one afternoon in October, 1809, Meriwether Lewis arrived at a small log cabin nestled deep in the Tennessee Mountains. By sunrise on the following day, he was dead, having suffered gunshot wounds to the head and chest.

You'll have to make sure your beginning is motivating, but it should also be relevant. The next sentence or two should lead into your thesis statement , or main message of your biography.

"It was a tragic end to a life that had so deeply affected the course of history in the United States. Meriwether Lewis, a driven and often tormented soul, led an expedition of discovery that expanded a young nation's economic potential, increased its scientific understanding, and enhanced its worldwide reputation."

Now that you've created an impressive beginning , you'll want to continue the flow. Find more intriguing details about the man and his work, and weave them into the composition.

Examples of Interesting Details:

  • Some people believed that Lewis and Clark would encounter elephants in the western wilderness, having misunderstood the wooly mammoth bones discovered in the United States.
  • The expedition resulted in the discovery and description of 122 new animal species and subspecies.
  • Lewis was a hypochondriac.
  • His death is still an unsolved mystery, although it was ruled a suicide.

You can find interesting facts by consulting diverse sources.

Fill the body of your biography with material that gives insight into your subject's personality. For instance, in a biography about Meriwether Lewis, you would ask what traits or events motivated him to embark on such a monumental exercise.

Questions to Consider in Your Biography:

  • Was there something in your subject's childhood that shaped his/her personality?
  • Was there a personality trait that drove him/her to succeed or impeded his progress?
  • What adjectives would you use to describe him/her?
  • What were some turning points in this life?
  • What was his/her impact on history?

Be sure to use transitional phrases and words to link your paragraphs and make your composition paragraphs flow . It is normal for good writers to re-arrange their sentences to create a better paper.

The final paragraph will summarize your main points and re-assert your main claim about your subject. It should point out your main points, re-name the person you're writing about, but it should not repeat specific examples.

As always, proofread your paper and check for errors. Create a bibliography and title page according to your teacher's instructions. Consult a style guide for proper documentation.

1. abraham lincoln (1809-1865).

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States and is best known for leading the country during the Civil War and working to end slavery. Employers today often connect with future employees for the first time through their online presence and activity. A top-notch law student’s LinkedIn profile becomes essential in initiating a positive online dialogue in a competitive market. Your personal branding will signify what you stand for as a professional, your unique skills, experiences, and the value you can bring to your clients or organization.

How to Shine on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is an amazing professional networking tool that you should use to your full advantage. This means including a strong professional photo and a thoughtful About section. Consider enlisting the help of a photography student in your area or an aspiring pro for professional headshots to achieve a polished look. And be sure to complete all sections of your profile — in the first person. How to Build Your Network

Once you have your law student LinkedIn profile in order, think about who you know that will accept your connection and speak well of you. Then expand that group to people with whom you have something in common.

Family members, friends, and other students you go/went to law school with are typically connections that can help you build your professional identity. Alumni from your undergrad or law school and attorneys at the firm you are going to summer with are additional connections that can further elevate your reputation when they accept your request.

Don’t forget to connect with or follow legal influencers or attorneys with a background in your field of interest as a show of your confidence and willingness to expand your horizons. Find people who could potentially champion what you stand for and who will appreciate your skill set for additional “street cred”.

Go Beyond the Connect Button

Once you’ve established a LinkedIn connection, you’ll want to leave a personalized message for the person. This should introduce who you are, why you want to have a relationship, and how you may be connected to them. What this shouldn’t be is an opportunity to ask the connection for something (such as an introduction with someone else on the platform). Ensuring continuity of education amidst crisis: A Q&A with Teach For Palestine CEO Kholoud Salameh

On the  International Day to Protect Education from Attack , Reem Marto, our Head of the Middle East and North Africa region, talked to  Teach For Palestine CEO Kholoud Salameh about the ways in which the  unprecedented education crisis has impacted how they support and prepare their teachers. In the West Bank, where Teach For Palestine operates, movement restrictions, escalating violence and military operations have resulted in the deaths of 67 students and injuries to 367 students in the last 10 months. We have been inspired by Teach For Palestine’s resilience in the face of these challenges and their efforts to ensure continuity of education are a reminder of the critical importance of protecting students’ right to education.

Reem Marto (RM): How did you prepare for the fellows' Summer Institute (4-week pre-service training) in light of escalating violence in the West Bank and what the International Court of Justice has called plausible risk of genocide in Gaza?

Kholoud Salameh (KS): In response to the ongoing challenges presented by the deteriorating security environment, we adopted a flexible and adaptive strategy for the execution of our first Summer Institute. The responsibility we felt extended beyond just facilitating their learning and capacity-building—it included ensuring their safety and security, which was a tremendous responsibility and kept us on edge throughout. This experience gave me a deeper appreciation for the immense pressure these fellows must feel when they return to their schools, not only nurturing their students' learning but also safeguarding their lives. It's hard to imagine the weight of such responsibility under these circumstances and how overwhelming it must be.

In the first few days of our Summer Institute, we encountered security incidents that forced us to postpone the training sessions. However, some fellows from Tulkarem and Hebron were already en route to us when we made that decision, as they had to travel through multiple military checkpoints and so had set out from home early in the day. We had to closely monitor the situation to ensure their safety, and maintained close communication with them until they arrived safely in Ramallah and then on their journey back to ensure they reached their homes without incident. It was an incredibly intense day, and as a result, we decided that going forward, all important communications would be sent by 6 a.m. to give everyone ample time to adjust their plans. We also acknowledged that situations could escalate during the training itself, requiring immediate action. We made provisions to be able to accommodate the trainees, should the situation prevent their travel back to their homes. To centralize communications and manage program-related safety and security concerns efficiently, we have also designated the Programs Manager as the security focal point who is responsible for sharing out all decisions and key information with participants if sessions had to be canceled or adjusted. 

We are dedicated to ensuring that more children in Palestine do not lose further educational opportunities and although we are not currently operating within Gaza, we are committed to helping children in Gaza however we can as they face significant challenges that hinder access to their basic rights, including education. As such, we have partnered with the Harvard Graduate School of Education to organize three major workshops aimed at addressing the educational needs in Gaza and exploring effective responses to these challenges. We recognize the urgency of this situation, especially since it’s clear that  the longer children stay out of school, the more difficult it is to catch up, with lasting consequences .

RM: How are you supporting your fellows to lead their classrooms and support their students when there is a threat of violence?

KS: To effectively equip our fellows with the necessary tools to lead during emergency situations, we conducted daily Psychosocial Support (PSS) sessions throughout our Summer Institute. These sessions were designed not only to help our fellows manage their own stress, but also to provide them with practical classroom activities to support student well-being. These activities included meditation, mindfulness and breathing exercises, as well as sessions focused on self-awareness and teamwork such as the “isolated island” exercise where participants are encouraged to roleplay and think through how they might work together to survive challenging situations. 

In light of the ongoing violence across Palestine, we have developed a rigorous safety and contingency plan aimed at safeguarding our staff and teachers throughout the fellowship. This plan includes preparedness for transitioning teaching to hybrid or fully online when the security situation deteriorates to a point of needing to shelter indoors. We also offer a training program for school leaders and other teachers that aims to build a network of local leaders who can coordinate safety efforts and inspire collective action when threats arise.  Our education supervisor also maintains daily contact with each fellow, providing continuous coaching and guidance and ensuring our fellows feel connected and confident, and that they are not alone in facing these challenges. We have created these plans in collaboration with all our teachers, prioritizing their safety above all else.

Additionally, we have established a dedicated WhatsApp group to facilitate seamless communication among team members. Regular discussions enable our fellows and staff to proactively identify and navigate challenges, reinforcing their sense of responsibility towards themselves and each other. This approach not only supports their personal growth but also strengthens our collective ability to achieve our goals.

At Teach For Palestine, our guiding principles of safety and to do no harm ensure that everyone within our organization operates in a secure environment. We believe that effective leadership involves empowering our teachers, staff members, and fellows to make decisions during emergency situations. Besides, the evaluation of these decisions is critical, as it provides valuable lessons and enhances our collective response to future emergencies. This approach not only strengthens our capacity for decision-making but also reinforces our commitment to safety and continuous improvement.

RM: Given the conflicts in the world right now that are generating a devastating impact on millions of children and families, do you have advice and insights for others across our global network related to protecting education from attack?

KS: Promoting tolerance, humanity, and inclusion plays a crucial role in protecting education from attack and fostering a safe and supportive learning environment. It is a fundamental belief of ours that if you do not raise children to prioritize tolerance and inclusivity then we will never be able to resolve conflict and differences. If we can instill these values from the get go, there is nothing to fear in the future. Additionally, advocating for adherence to international law and the right to education is essential to ensure that learning spaces remain safe and secure.

From our experience there are a few key strategies we have found helpful and, in the face of increasing global conflicts, we would recommend that educational organizations prioritize the the following: 

Leveraging technology for continuity: Embrace technological solutions that enable the continuation of education during crises, for example by investing in e-learning platforms that can be rapidly deployed to ensure that education continues uninterrupted. Additionally, training educators to proficiently use these technologies will ensure that the transition to online learning is seamless when necessary.

Fostering community engagement: Building strong relationships with local communities can significantly enhance the protection of educational institutions. Community-based monitoring can provide early warnings about potential threats, allowing for quicker responses.

Implementing psychosocial support: Regular psychosocial support should be integrated into the school curriculum to help students and staff cope with the stresses caused by conflict. Training teachers in psychosocial first aid can also be incredibly beneficial, enabling them to provide immediate support to students in need.

Strengthening networks and partnerships: Collaborating with other organizations can enhance learning and resource sharing on best practices in educational safety. Networks can provide support and amplify efforts in advocacy, resource mobilization, and the implementation of innovative educational solutions during crises.

Preparing for adaptability: Ensure that all educational programming is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing for quick adaptation to changing circumstances. This includes having backup plans that can accommodate both in-person and remote learning scenarios. 

As students return to school, the sound of laughter and smiles usually fills the air. Unfortunately, this is not the case in Palestine, where the return to school brings fear and tears instead. Many are left asking, “Why does this continue, and for how long?” As the situation continues to deteriorate, these are the strategies that we will continue to draw on and build upon in order to ensure as much normalcy for our teachers and their students as is possible in such abnormal times.
