కాజల్ ‘కోమాలి’ రివ్యూ

కొన్ని ఐడియాలు ప్రారంభంలో వినటానికి చాలా ఎగ్జైటింగ్ గా ఉంటాయి. అయితే అవి ట్రీట్మెంట్ చేసేటప్పుడు, తెరకెక్కేటప్పుడు మెల్లిమెల్లిగా రొటీన్ బాట పడుతూంటాయి. అలాంటి ఐడియానే ఈ రోజు రిలీజైన తమిళ డబ్బింగ్ సినిమా కోమాలి ది. పదహారేళ్లు కోమాలో ఉన్న ఓ వ్యక్తి మళ్లీ ఈ లోకంలోకి వస్తే? అనే కథాంశంతో ‘కోమాలి’ రూపొందింది. పదహారేళ్లకు, ఇప్పటికి సమాజంలో ఎంతో మార్పు వచ్చింది. మారిన పరిస్థితులకు హీరో అలవాటు పడ్డాడా? అనేది ఎప్పుడూ ఆసక్తిగొలిపే అంశమే. అయితే అంతే ఇంట్రస్ట్ తో డైరక్టర్ ఈ సినిమాని డీల్ చేసారా..అసలు కథేంటి..తెలుగు వాళ్లకు నచ్చుతుందా ఈ తమిళ డబ్బింగ్ సినిమా? వంటి విషయాలు రివ్యూలో చూద్దాం.  

 స్కూల్ స్టూడెంట్ అయిన  రవి (జయం రవి)ని వాళ్ల నాన్న అనేక నీతిగా,పద్దతిగా బ్రతికేలా ఉండటం నేర్పిస్తాడు. రవి తన క్లాస్ మేట్ నిఖిత (సంయుక్త హెగ్డే) ను ప్రేమించి ఆమెను ప్రపోజ్ చెయ్యాలనుకుంటాడు. కానీ ధైర్యం లేక ఆగిపోతాడు. మొత్తానికి ఆ ధైర్యం తెచ్చుకుని ఆమెకు ప్రపోజ్ చేసే సమయానికి అనుకోని ఓ అవాంతరం వచ్చి పడుతుంది. ధర్మరాజు అనే గూండా తన రైవల్ ని చంపి తప్పించుకునే క్రమంలో వీళ్ళ మధ్యకు వస్తాడు.  నిఖితను అడ్డం పెట్టుకుని తప్పించుకునే ప్రయత్నం చేస్తాడు. రవికి ఆమెను రక్షించే క్రమంలో తలకు దెబ్బ తగులుతుంది. కోమాలోకి వెళ్లిపోతాడు.  16 సంవత్సరాలు తర్వాత రవి కోమాలోంచి బయిటకు వస్తాడు. రవి కోమాలో ఉన్న ఇన్నేళ్లలో ప్రపంచం చాలా మారిపోయింది. టెక్నికల్ గానూ డవలప్ అయ్యింది. 

కుటుంబంలోనూ చాలా మార్పులు వచ్చాయి, అతని తండ్రి చనిపోయాడు. తన సోదరి తన క్లోజ్ ప్రెండ్ మణి (యోగిబాబు)నే పెళ్లి చేసుకుంది. ఇక కోమాలో నుంచి బయిటకు వచ్చిన రవిని ఇన్నాళ్లుగా ట్రీట్ చేసిన డాక్టర్...ప్రెండ్,బావ అయిన మణిని పిలిచి...అతను ఇన్నేళ్ల తన జీవితం మిస్ అయ్యాడు. కాబట్టి అతని కోరికలు ఏమైనా ఉంటే తీర్చండి. లేకపోతే డిప్రెషన్ లోకి వెళ్లి ఆత్మహత్య చేసుకోవటమో లేక చుట్టూ ఉన్నవాళ్లను ఎవరో ఒకళ్లను చంపటమో చేస్తాడు అని చెప్తారు. అక్కడ నుంచి మణి కష్టాలు మొదలవుతాయి.రవి తన మొదటి కోరికగా..తన కోమాలోకి వెళ్లక ముందు ప్రేమించిన నిఖిత ని చూడాలని , ఆమెను పెళ్లి చేసుకోవాలని అంటాడు. ఆమె ఇంటికి వెళ్తారు. 

అయితే ఆమెకు ఇప్పటికే పెళ్లైపోయింది. అయితే నిఖిత తన భర్తను తన పాత లవ్ స్టోరీతో ఇబ్బంది పెట్టడం ఎందుకని..అసలు నిన్ను అప్పుడు ప్రేమించలేదని చెప్తుంది. దాంతో నిరాశకు గురి అయిన రవికు ఓ లవర్ ని సెట్ చేస్తే అన్ని సెట్ అవుతాయనుకుంటాడు. అప్పుడు పరిచయం అవుతుంది రితిక(కాజల్ అగర్వాల్). అక్కడ నుంచి వాళ్ల లవ్ స్టోరీ ఏ మలుపు తిరిగింది. ఈ ఆధునిక ప్రపంచంలో రవి ఎలా ఎడ్జస్ట్ అయ్యాడు,లోకల్ పొలిటీషియన్ ధర్మరాజు(కెఎస్ రవికుమార్ )తో రవికు ఉన్న గొడవ ఏమిటి వంటి విషయాలు తెలియాలంటే సినిమా చూడాల్సిందే. 

   ఎలా ఉందంటే...

వాస్తవానికి ఈ కథలో కాంప్లిక్ట్ ..హీరో కోమాలోంచి వచ్చినప్పుడు పుట్టలేదు. హీరో ప్రెండ్ యోగిబాబుకు అతన్ని అప్పచెప్పి జాగ్రత్తగా చూసుకుని , అతని కోరికలు తీర్చమన్నప్పుడు మొదలైంది. ఓ రకంగా ఇది యోగిబాబు కథ. అతనికే హీరో ఓ సమస్యలా మారతాడు. దాంతో హీరో తెరపై చేసిందేమీ పెద్దగా కనపడదు. ఇప్పటి ప్రపంచాన్ని చూసి ఆశ్చర్యపోవటం, అమాయకంగా ప్రశ్నించటం వంటివి చేయటంతోనే సరిపోయింది. దాంతో యోగిబాబుని మనం ఫాలో అవుతాం కానీ హీరోని ఫాలో అవ్వలేము చాలా సేపు.

ఇక ప్లాట్ విషయానికి వస్తే...చాలా సంవత్సరాల తర్వాత ఓ వ్య్తక్తి కోమాలోంచి బయిటకు వచ్చి ఈ ప్రంపంచంలోకి ప్రవేశిస్తే...ఏమౌతుంది అనేది నావల్టితో కూడిన ఇంట్రస్టింగ్ ప్రిమైజ్. ఇలాంటి కథనుంచి  చాలా ఎక్సపెక్ట్ చేస్తాం. చాలా ఇంట్రస్టింగ్ సీన్స్  తో  సినిమా మొత్తం నిండి ఉంటుంది అనుకుంటాం.  అయితే స్టోరీ ఐడియాని డవలప్ చేస్తూ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే రాసుకున్న క్రమంలో ఈ నావల్టి మొత్తం మాయమైపోవటం దర్శకుడు గమనించినట్లు లేరు. ఫస్టాఫ్ పెద్దగా ఏమీ కదలినట్లుండదు కానీ ఫన్ తో పంచ్ డైలాగులతో ఎంటర్టైన్ చేస్తుంది. అదే సెకండాప్ అప్పటిదాకా నడిచిన దారిని మర్చిపోయి ప్రక్కకు వెళ్లిపోతుంది. మెలోడ్రామా ఎక్కువైపోయి విసుగిస్తుంది.  

అయితే ఇప్పటి రోజుల్లో ఉండే కొన్ని కఠిన వాస్తవాలను ఈ సినిమా  చూపించగలిగింది. అయితే కొన్ని సార్లు ఏదో ఉద్బోథ లా మారింది.  మరీ ముఖ్యంగా హీరో క్యారక్టరైజేషన్ సరిగ్గా రాసుకోలేదు. ఓ చోట కష్టపడి ఫేస్ బుక్ వాడటం నేర్చుకున్న హీరో ..ఆ తర్వాత ఇంటర్నెట్ దేనికి పనికొస్తుందో తెలియనట్లు బిహేవ్ చేస్తాడు. ఇలాంటి సీన్స్ అడపా,దడపా మనలని ఇబ్బంది పెడతాయి. కామెడీ సినిమా కదా అని సరిపెట్టుకోవాలి. అయితే జయం రవి కొన్ని ఎపిసోడ్స్ లో తన అమాయికత్వం, మారిన కాలం లో వచ్చిన మార్పులు తెలియక చేసే చేష్టలు మాత్రం బాగా నవ్విస్తాయి. 

 ఇక ఈ సినిమా బాగుండేది టచింగ్ క్లైమాక్స్ అని చెప్పాలి. 2015లో వచ్చిన చెన్నై వరదల నేపధ్యాన్ని వాడుకుంటూ కొన్ని రియల్ లైఫ్ మూవ్ మెంట్స్ ని చూపించటం కలిసొచ్చింది. ఈ సీక్వెన్స్ లో జయం రవి, సంయుక్త, సారా ,యోగి బాబు కలిసి నెగిటివ్ ని వెతికే సీన్స్ హిలేరియస్ గా ఉంటాయి. అంతేకాదు 90 ల నాటి పిల్లల ఆరుబయిట ఆడుకునే ఆటలకు, ఇప్పటి పిల్లలు ఇంట్లో గాడ్జెట్స్ తో ఆడుకునే ఆటలకు మధ్య వ్యత్యాసాలను చూపే ప్రయత్నం చేయటం కూడా నచ్చుతుంది. 

ఎవరెలా చేసారు..

జయం రవి ఓ టీనేజర్ గా కనపడటం అందుకు పడ్డ కష్టం మెచ్చుకోబుద్దేస్తుంది. సినిమాలో అతను పాత్ర ప్యాసివ్ గా ఉన్నా ఎంగేజ్ చేయగలిగాడు. ఇక కాజల్ అగర్వాల్ ఈ సినిమాలో ఉన్నా లేకపోయినా ఒకటే అనిపిస్తుంది. మరో ప్రక్క కన్నడ నటి సంయుక్త హెడ్గే మాత్రం బాగా చేసింది. ముఖ్యంగా క్లైమాక్స్ లో అదరకొట్టింది. యోగిబాబు ప్రస్తుతం ఫామ్ లో ఉన్నాడు. వరస పంచ్ లు వేస్తూ దుమ్ము రేపాడు. ప్రముఖ దర్శకుడు కెఎస్ రవికుమార్ కామెడీ టచ్ ఉన్న విలన్ గా బాగున్నారు.

దర్శకత్వం మిగతా విభాగాలు

ఆల్రెడీ ఈ సినిమా తమిళంలో క్రితం సంవత్సరం రిలీజైంది. దర్శకుడు ప్రదీప్ రంగనాధన్ ఈ సినిమా తో పరిచయం అయ్యారు. కొన్ని సీన్స్ చాలా సీనియార్టి ఉన్నట్లు చాలా బాగా తీసినా, తను ఏదైతే ఈ సినిమాలో చెప్పాలనుకున్నాడో ఆ కోర్ ఐడియాని మాత్రం సరిగ్గా ప్రెజెంట్ చేయలేదనిపిస్తుంది. ఇక హిప్ హాప్ తమీజా  పాటలు యూత్ ఫుల్ గా ఉన్నాయి. అయితే బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ మాత్రం చాలా లౌడ్ గా ఉంది. రిచ్చర్డ్ సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ సూపర్బ్ గా ఉంది. ఎడిటర్ ప్రవీణ్..ఈ సినిమాకు బాగా ప్లస్ అయ్యారు.

The movie is watchable for heavy 90s nostalgia vibe and a few well executed fun elements, but otherwise it is let down by the poorly written script and cliched narrative. Jayam Ravi and Yogi Babu were good. Except for the cringe iduppu comedy sequence, other comedy sequences were passable. Hip Hop Tamizha’s music was enjoyable. On the whole ends up an average watch.

Jayam Ravi script sense always outstanding!!

Comali is an aggregate of humour and strong emotions along with a powerful social message. I didn't keep my smile down until the end of the film. This film shows us that -no matter what development takes place, no matter how much we have changed, our basic emotion -humanity will always lie within us. This movie can be chosen as a family weekend movie or a movie to get relaxed from all your stress. Comali was one of the best feel-good movies that I watched recently. My rating - 85/100

Wanted to rewatch this after Love Today. Remember being entertained by this but walking out not too impressed with it as a film back then. That more or less remains. The film is in it's strong zone in its fun stretches. The 90s nostagia and everything that comes along with a guy waking up after a 16 yr old coma (Time Travel concept masqueraded) are mostly fun. The little touches of "Nadigar Dhinesh en pullai nga" and the meta moment of Comali padathil Nadigar Rajinikanth kaatchigal neekkam scroller on TV are the kind of stuff we rarely get to see in tamil cinema these days. Comali Movie Review

After starring in intense thrillers and social dramas actor Jayam Ravi finally breaks his shackles and has derailed from the serious track to fun track with his comedy entertainer Comali . The buzz around the flick was very high when it was announced that the actor has shed 20 kilos to don a role in the film but the anticipation further hyped when the trailer had scenes trolling Rajinikanth which the fans of the actor found to be in bad taste and hence the scene was removed. This put the film in the attention of public and acted as a great launch pad which the story teller Pradeep Ranganathan has failed to capitalize on by adding over dramatic portions in the second half of the film.

Ravi (Jayam Ravi) a school boy in the 80’s leads a normal life as a teenager. He falls in love at the first sight with his classmate Nikita ( Samyuktha Hedge ). What does a hero do when he falls in love with a girl in Tamil cinema? Either he indulges in heroic act in front of the girl or send her gifts. Here our hero does the latter. He gifts her a dearie idol which he holds close to his heart. Following which in the year 1996, in an unfortunate event Ravi meets with an accident which put him in coma. He comes out of coma after 16 long years only to find that the world he lived in no longer exists and is taken over by mammoth technological and economical evolution. He finds it hard to fit in but his friend Yogi Babu and his family members try to aid him in coping up with the world.

He slowly comes to term with the present day world and attempts to take care of himself financially as well by taking up a job as a security guard. And latter he starts his own YouTube channel as well under the name Comali. He gets acquainted to Kajal Aggarwal who tells him that the idol that he gifted to Nikita a long time ago is an expensive one and how it is passed on within his family lineage generation after generation. Now Ravi wants to get back the idol that belongs to his family. The problem is, now the idol is with a notorious criminal and MLA Dharmaraj (K. S. Ravi Kumar) who claims that it is his property. Did Ravi manage to get back the idol, if so how did he do it, is what makes the rest of the movie.

The director has cleverly used the alienation of character Ravi to the maximum exploitable way possible and it has worked out tremendously well. With actor Yogi Babu being at his best has made the first half of the film very entertaining. But the latter part has overly dramatic scenes which makes it difficult for the audience to connect with the drama.

Actor Jayam Ravi as usual has put on a stunning show in the drama. Particularly, the actor had scored exceptionally well in the scenes that proceeds after him waking up from coma. He has depicted the character that battles to come to terms with the ways of the world that he lived in to the present day world in an extraordinary way. However, the actor could not refrain himself from giving us a glimpse of his character from Nimirthu Nil. Actor Yogi babu who has been lately accused of putting on lackluster comedy show has once again come back to his form in the venture. Actresses Samyuktha Hegde and Kajal Aggarwal have very less scope in the script to showcase their acting flair. Rest of the cast is adequate and has delivered what was asked of them.

On the technical front, cinematographer Richard M. Nathan’s camera has framed the drama in a whole different angle; particularly he stands out with his frames of the Chennai floods which have been shot with lot of adeptness. Hip Hop Tamizha’s background score has helped in adding to the comical scenes though he fails to impress with his songs.

Director Pradeep Ranganathan must be appreciated for his attempt to take on a fresh plot in his very first film. He also deserves to be appreciated for his screenplay which has saved the film to an extent which otherwise would have been a tedious watch in the end. The film would have been a lot better if the story teller had chose not to incline towards the melodramatic tone in the second half of the film.

On the whole, even in spite of illogical elements Comali manages to entertain to an extent though not as a whole drama.

Comali review: Jayam Ravi’s film is a formulaic entertainer with few good laughs

Comali review: jayam ravi’s film is a silly story of love and redemption barely saved by yogi babu’ great comedic timing and one-liners..

Debutant Pradeep Ranganathan’s Comali , which borrows its premise from Harvey Glazer’s 2007 English romantic comedy Kickin’ It Old Skool, works largely due to its comedy and a terrific Yogi Babu. His one-liners work like magic in an otherwise predictable, silly story of love and redemption. If not for Yogi Babu’s inimitable wit and screen presence, Comali has absolutely nothing to draw anyone’s attention. In spite of an exciting premise, the film doesn’t quite work on the whole and manages to entertain only when it doesn’t take itself seriously.

Comali is centered on Ravi (Jayam Ravi) and we get introduced to him as a school boy. The year is 1999 and Ravi falls head over heels for his classmate Nikita (Samyuktha Hegde). Ravi pursues Nikita and when he’s all set to propose to her by gifting a special idol, he meets with an accident and ends up in coma, only to wake up after 16 years. Life isn’t the same when Ravi wakes up from coma and he has a difficult time adjusting to both his physical condition and the severe shock he encounters after so many years. The rest of the story is about Ravi trying to get a grip back on his life and finding a purpose to live while trying to adapt to the new lifestyle.

Comali borrows a very interesting premise (without giving credit to the original) and hardly does anything with it. It could have made a really fun film out of the idea but all that it manages to do is to tread a very predictable path of romance and redemption. Throw in a needlessly preachy climax to make the experience even more horrible. One of the biggest problems with the film is that it isn’t sure till the end whether it wants to be an adult comedy, a romantic drama or a drama on humanity. The story had the scope to be funnier but Comali holds itself back and that’s one of the reasons why it never works on the whole.

Jayam Ravi is decent in his role and he comfortably slips into the shoes of a school-going teenager as well as someone in his 30’s. But Comali really belongs to Yogi Babu, who carries the film on his shoulders from start to finish, and overshadows Ravi with his screen presence on so many occasions. Kajal Aggarwal has very little to contribute in a role that can be easily written off as a cameo, and so does Samyuktha Hegde in a role that never quite gets its due.

Thalapathy Vijay’s new movie The Greatest of All Time (The GOAT) released in Tamil and Telugu in theaters amid a fine amount of expectations. Delve into our review to know how it is.

Gandhi (Vijay), a member of the Special Anti-Terrorist Squad (SATS), successfully completes a mission in Kenya to eliminate a terrorist gang led by Menon (Mohan). Years later, while on a mission in Bangkok, Gandhi finds his son Jeevan (also Vijay) dead. To his shock, he encounters Jeevan alive in Russia years later, and they return home together. Following their return, strange events begin to unfold involving the SATS members, and Gandhi embarks on a quest to uncover the truth. Did Gandhi succeed? Is Jeevan truly his son? Does he have any ties with Menon? These questions form the core of the movie’s mystery.

Plus Points:

Thalapathy Vijay showcases his versatility, excelling in the dual roles of Gandhi and Jeevan. His portrayal of Jeevan’s villainous side is particularly compelling, while his calm and composed performance as Gandhi, paired with a stylish salt-and-pepper look, adds gravitas to the character. Vijay’s ability to balance both roles with finesse is the film’s biggest asset.

Supporting actors like Prabhudeva, Jayaram, Prashanth, Mic Mohan, and Sneha deliver okay performances in their limited roles.

The face-off scenes between the two Vijays are well executed and engaging. The action sequences are well choreographed, and the climax, set during a live CSK cricket match, is a fan-pleaser, despite its extended runtime.

Minus Points:

The storyline is predictable and follows a familiar template. Despite Venkat Prabhu’s claims of an unpredictable screenplay, the narrative is easy to foresee, making it less engaging for viewers who are familiar with similar films. A more tightly written script could have elevated the film’s impact.

The first half is slow and drags, testing the audience’s patience. While the second half picks up with the intense face-off scenes, the film’s overall length remains a concern. Even though Vijay’s performance keeps the momentum going, the story feels stretched.

There are notable plot holes, especially in the action sequences where the villains fail to land a single shot on the protagonist, a common yet frustrating trope in action films.

Menon’s character, portrayed by Mohan, lacks depth, making the villain less impactful. Meenakshi Chaudhary’s role is underutilised, as she appears in only a few scenes and songs. The cameos by Trisha and Sivakarthikeyan are a pleasant surprise but have no impact on the film.

Some of the humour falls flat, and the end credits sequence feels like a direct copy from a flop Hollywood movie.

Technical Aspects:

Venkat Prabhu’s direction and screenplay are the film’s weak points. The story is conventional, and the slow pacing, especially in the first half, diminishes audience engagement. The film’s excessive runtime further hampers its appeal.

On the technical side, the VFX team deserves credit for convincingly de-aging Vijay, although other versions of the character look awkward. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music fails to leave a mark, and several scenes, particularly in the first half, feel unnecessary and could have been trimmed. The cinematography is adequate. Production values are commendable.

On the whole, The Greatest of All Time (The GOAT) is a standard revenge action drama that leans heavily on Vijay’s performance. His portrayal of the villainous Jeevan and the face-off scenes are the film’s highlights, but beyond that, it offers little in terms of novelty or excitement. The slow pacing, long runtime, score, and numerous plot holes make it a challenging watch for all but die-hard Vijay fans.

Is Vijay's The GOAT A Disaster In Telugu? Thalapathy Vijay, who has been hitting the screens in Telugu with his dubbed films of late, earned a decent market for theatrical rights in the two Telugu-speaking states. Thalapathy Vijay's latest movie is an action-thriller in which he played a dual role as a father and son, under the direction of the maverick filmmaker Venkat Prabhu. The movie titled 'The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) was released to a record-breaking pre-release business worldwide on September 5.

GOAT Synopsis Gandhi (Vijay) is a successful member of the Special Anti-Terrorist Squad (SATS) and is known for his terrorist mission in Kenya, under the leadership of Menon (Mohan). While in Bangkok, Gandhi finds out that his son Jeevan (Vijay) is dead and years later is shocked to see Jeevan alive and kicking in Russia. After they come home, unusual events start forcing Gandhi to uncover the truth behind Jeevan's disappearance and reappearance.

Due to the unexpected and unprecedented low-key buzz for Vijay's The GOAT movie, the openings for the movie's Telugu version are very low and not up to the mark. The theatrical business was registered at 21 Crore and the movie needs about Rs 30 Crore as per the trade analysts to achieve the safe zone with a break-even. Even before the release, GOAT's lack of buzz is a dampener for its release day collection. The distributors of the film are pinning hopes on this festival weekend for the movie to soar at the box office.

భర్త గాంధీపై ఎలాంటి అనుమానాలు అనుకి కలుగుతుంటాయి. జీవన్ ఎలా తప్పిపోయాడు? తప్పిపోయిన జీనన్ చనిపోయాడని టెర్రిరిస్టు టీమ్ ఎలా భ్రమను కలిగించాయి. తండ్రి గాంధీపై జీవన్ ఎందుకు ప్రతీకారం తీర్చుకోవాలనుకొన్నాడు? జీవన్ ఎక్కడ? ఎవరి వద్ద పెరిగాడు? గాంధీపై జీవన్‌కు కోపం కలగడానికి కారణాలు ఏమిటి? తండ్రిపై పగ తీర్చుకోవడానికి చెన్నైలో చెన్నై సూపర్ కింగ్స్ మ్యాచ్‌ను ఎలా టార్గెట్ చేసుకొన్నాడు? ధోని మ్యాచ్ ఆడుతుండగా స్టేడియాన్ని పేల్చివేయాలనే కుట్రను జీవన్ ఎలా ప్లాన్ చేశాడు? జీవన్ ఎటాక్‌ను గాంధీ ఎలా అడ్డుకొన్నాడు అనేది సినిమా కథ.

వెంకట్ ప్రభు ఎంచుకొన్న కథ, రాసుకొన్న కథనంలో ఎలాంటి కొత్తదనం లేదు. రెగ్యులర్, రొటీన్, ముతక సబ్జెక్ట్‌తో సాహసమే చేశాడనే చెప్పాలి. అయితే విజయ్ ఫ్యాన్స్ ఏం కోరుకొంటారనే కమర్షియల్ అంశాలన్నీ పేర్చుకొంటూ వెళ్లి ఆకట్టుకొనే ప్రయత్నం చేశాడు. ఫస్టాఫ్ విషయానికి వస్తే.. ఎలాంటి కొత్తదనం లేదు. ప్రతీ సన్నివేశం, రాబోయే సీన్లు ఊహించినట్టే ఉంటాయి. తొలి భాగం చూసేటప్పుడు ఎలాంటి థ్రిల్స్ లేకుండా ఆడియెన్ మెదడకు ఎలాంటి పని లేకుండా రొటీన్ సినిమా చూస్తున్నామనే ఫీలింగ్ కల్పించాడు. ఇక జీవన్ క్యారెక్టర్‌ను తెరపైకి తెచ్చి ఇంటర్వెల్ బ్యాంగ్‌తో సినిమాను ఓ మలుపు తిప్పాడనే చెప్పాలి.

సెకండాఫ్‌ను పక్కాగా కమర్షియల్, ఎంటర్‌టైన్‌మెంట్ వాల్యూస్‌తో డిజైన్ చేసుకొన్నాడు. గాంధీ, జీవన్ పాత్రల మధ్య సీన్లు నువ్వా? నేనా అనే విధంగా రాసుకొన్న సీన్లు కొన్ని వర్కవుట్ అయ్యాయి. ఇక విలనిజాన్ని జీవన్ పాత్ర ద్వారా కొత్తదనం చూపించే ప్రయత్నం చేశాడు. సెకండాఫ్‌లో త్రిషా ఐటెమ్ సాంగ్, చివర్లలో శివకార్తీకేయన్ గెస్ట్ ఎంట్రీ సినిమాకు హై వాల్యూస్ క్రియేట్ చేశాయి. చెన్నై సూపర్ కింగ్ మ్యాచ్‌ను బేస్ చేసుకొని క్లైమాక్స్‌ను డిజైన్ చేసిన విధానం సినిమాను నెక్ట్స్ లెవెల్‌కు తీసుకెళ్లింది. ది గ్రేటెస్ట్ ఆఫ్ ఆల్ టైమ్ అనే టైటిల్‌కు జస్టిఫికేషన్ ఇచ్చిన విధానం అనేక సందేహాలకు, అనుమానాలకు పుల్ స్టాప్ పెట్టేలా వెంకట్ ప్రభు డిజైన్ చేసిన క్లైమాక్స్‌తో సినిమా పక్కా కమర్షియల్ ఎంటర్‌టైనర్ అనే ఫీలింగ్‌ను కల్పించి తన సత్తాను చాటుకొన్నాడు.

ఇక విజయ్ ద్విపాత్రాభినయంతో గాంధీ, జీవన్ పాత్రల్లో డిఫరెంట్‌గా కనిపించారు. విజయ్ గురించి కొత్తగా చెప్పాల్సిన అవసరం లేదు. తన ఫ్యాన్స్‌ ఏం కోరుకొంటారో అవన్నీ పేర్చుకొంటూ వెళ్లాడు. పాటలు, ఫైట్స్, డ్యాన్సులతో కేక పెట్టించాడు. ఇక ప్రభుదేవా, ప్రశాంత్ క్యారెక్టర్ల మధ్యఎమోషనల్ సీన్లు బాగున్నాయి. ప్రభుదేవా తన క్యారెక్టర్‌లో ఉండే కొంత ట్విస్టుతో ఆకట్టుకొన్నాడనేచెప్పాలి. మీనాక్షి చౌదరీ గ్లామరస్‌గా, హాట్ హాట్‌గా కనిపించింది. ఆమెది చిన్నపాత్ర అయినప్పటికీ గుర్తుండిపోయేలా ఉంటుంది. స్నేహ బ్యూటిఫుల్‌గా, గ్లామరస్‌గా యంగ్ హీరోయిన్లకు పోటీ ఇచ్చేలా కనిపించింది. యోగిబాబు, ప్రేమ్ జీ కామెడీ పర్వాలేదనిపిస్తుంది. శివకార్తీకేయన్ గెస్ట్ రోల్ ఫ్యాన్స్ కోసం డిజైన్ చేసింది కావడంతో ఉన్నంత సేపు థియేటర్లలో కేకలు వినిపించాయి. త్రిషా ఐటెం సాంగ్ మూవీకి ప్లస్‌గా నిలిచింది. ఈ చిత్రంలో ప్రతీ పాత్రకు మంచి స్కోప్ కలిగించేలా వెంకట్ ప్రభు రాసుకోవడం బలంగా కనిపించింది

సాంకేతిక నిపుణుల విషయానికి వస్తే.. మ్యూజిక్ విషయానికి వస్తే.. బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ సినిమాకు స్ట్రెంగ్త్‌గా నిలిచింది. తెలుగు వెర్షన్‌లో పాటలు చెత్తగా ఉన్నాయి. సినిమాటోగ్రఫి బాగుంది. వీఎఫ్ఎక్స్, గ్రాఫిక్స్‌పై మరింత దృష్టి పెట్టాల్సి ఉండేదనిపిస్తుంది. ప్రొడక్షన్ వాల్యూస్ బాగున్నాయి. ఏజీఎస్ బ్యానర్‌ ప్రమాణాలకు అనుగుణంగా ఈ సినిమాను రిచ్‌గా రూపొందించారు. సినిమా క్వాలిటీ కోసం, పాత్రల కోసం ఎంచుకొన్న నటీనటులను చూస్తే.. సినిమా నిర్మాణంపై వారికి ఉన్న అభిరుచి, తపన తెలుస్తుంది.

‘35: Chinna Katha Kaadu’ movie review: Nivetha Thomas and a bunch of children in an uplifting tale of triumph

Debut director nanda kishore emani’s ‘35: chinna katha kaadu’ celebrates childhood innocence and family bonding, helped by nivetha thomas, viswadev, priyadarshi and the child actors’ performances.

Ever questioned why zero, which has no value on its own, is bigger than nine when it is preceded by 1 and becomes 10? This question recurs through the Telugu family drama 35: Chinna Katha Kaadu (not a small story), directed by debutant Nanda Kishore Emani. Are Mathematics fundamentals not to be questioned? Should a student accept the norm, learn the syllabus and pass the examinations? The film starring Nivetha Thomas, Viswadev, Priyadarshi, child actors Abhay and Arun and more than 50 children is a heartwarming and a well thought out story that encourages its viewers to look within and take that first step towards overcoming setbacks. 35 portrays children as realistically as possible and feels like a return to an age of innocence. 

In the temple town of Tirupati, Saraswathi’s (Nivetha Thomas) life revolves around her family — husband Prasad (Viswadev) who works as a bus conductor, and her two sons Abhay and Arun (Arun Dev). In the opening portions, there is a close shot of cupboard door handles shaped like a veena, a musical instrument shown in passing. We never see Saraswathi playing the veena; perhaps because she is consumed by family responsibilities which she takes on without any grudge, leaving her with no time for music. In the sparsely decorated house that befits a lower-middle-class family, the artistic door handles are one of the few indulgences. Incidentally, the production design is by Latha Naidu. 

35: Chinna Katha Kaadu (Telugu)

Nanda Kishore introduces us to this family as Annamacharya’s ‘Bhavayami Gopala Balam’ plays in the background (composer Vivek Sagar fills 35 with soothing classical and semi-classical notes). When Saraswathi wishes her son Arun for the day’s examination and tells him that ‘we’ have to win, the sentence says it all. Contrary to her name, Saraswathi is considered a failure since she did not clear 10th standard. Her son, in class five, is now at the crossroads. 

The story is not about whether Arun wants to succeed but about how others look at his setback. Nanda Kishore introduces a key character named Chanakya (Priyadarshi), a Maths teacher who does not hesitate to name students by their marks. Not for once does he pause to think of the plight of a child who is called zero or ‘sunna’. Much later in the story, when he receives a retort that equates his nature to a ‘constant’ in algebra, there were a few hearty laughs in the cinema hall.

The conflict point of 35 can be narrated in a line. What if a boy who has always scored zero is asked to score at least 35 so that he can stay on in school? Can he do it and who would help him? It is hard not to recall the Hindi film Taare Zameen Par . However, unlike Ishaan Awasthi (Darsheel Safary) who is helped by Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aamir Khan), Arun gets no help from Chanakya. in fact, he has to also contend with Chanakya’s bruised ego.

The manner in which Nanda Kishore prods some characters to look within, gather courage and work towards overcoming their setbacks sets the narrative apart. 

The 145-minute narrative devotes time to show us the busy world of Saraswathi at home; even as it shows the bonds between the children. It has been ages since we have watched a mainstream children’s film. A chunk of 35 unfolds in the classrooms of fifth and sixth classes, depicting how a class monitor behaves, how kids may or may not include a student in their inner circle, and so on. None of this seems unrealistic and the pranks are also not out of place.

The sibling bond, and Saraswathi and Prasad’s relationship are portrayed beautifully. When the son, drowning in his lessons, remarks that it has been several days since he heard the word ‘chinnu’ in the house, it is a reminder of the keen observations of children.

If there is a grouse, it has to be with the characterisation of the principal (Bhagyaraj), who, for a long time, does not take an affirmative stance against the high-handed Maths teacher. For those who think of Maths as their Achilles heel, Chanakya embodies terror. Priyadarshi’s portrayal of a snooty, cold-hearted teacher is on point. To the extent that I rooted for the pranks, the kids played on him.

The standout performance of 35 is by Nivetha Thomas who plays Saraswathi with a sense of poise and dignity and in moments when she is helpless and agitated, we root for her to win. We often see her multitasking, skillfully juggling responsibilities and Nivetha makes it all look natural. 35 is her best performance to date. In several frames, when she is framed in the glow of warm light, cinematographer Niketh Bommi quietly weaves magic.

Viswadev is earnest as the empathetic spouse who quietly supports his wife. The child actors — Arun, Abhay, the girl who plays Kiran and the several friends in the classroom — are a treat to watch. Arun’s vulnerability and gawky mischief are in sync with his characterisation. Gautami is graceful in a brief part that appears a tad underwritten, though it befits the larger scheme of things.

35 can leave viewers with heartwarming tears and a big smile. There is nothing as satisfying as rooting for an underdog and collectively celebrating his/her victory, is there? The icing on the cake is an explanation of how zero becomes significant when preceded by a few numbers.

35 Movie Review: A heartfelt love letter to childhood curiosity

Debutant director Nanda Kishore Emani is a master craftsman at noticing minor nuances of life. The team behind 35 has undoubtedly produced a winner, and this film is more than just weekend entertainment. In an age where films compete to display the most spectacular feats conceivable, here comes a film that takes a gentle, mindful walk through a spiritual garden, seeking to capture even the smallest nuances. It's been a while since we've seen a film about childhood that feels poetic yet straightforward.

In Tirupati, Prasad and Saraswati's idyllic life with their young children becomes tough when their eleven-year-old son, Arun, finds mathematics to be an impossible mystery. The story follows Saraswati, a mother who dropped out of school, as she guides her son through the subject while keeping his curious spirit alive.

It's not graceful to sum this film up in a single phrase since its beauty lies in the details. The textures in the grading, the velvety edit, and the grounded performances blend together like sweet nectar. This film is not about a high-stakes conflict or a dramatic adventure; rather, it depicts a way of life in a small town family. We seldom see the small town regions of Telangana and Andhra in cinema. Through the lens of cinematographer Niketh Bommi, Tirupati looks like a blissful place. Furthermore, with the enchanting work of musician Vivek Sagar, the narrative almost grants you a spiritual escape.

Many threads in the film flow beautifully, such as the husband-wife relationship, the rivalry with the mathematics teacher (played by a beloved Priyadarshi), peer camaraderie, and childhood restlessness. The gentle romance between Prasad and Saraswati is a beautiful page out of many scriptures. Prasad, played by Vishwadev Rachakonda, reveals the earnest depth that many fathers hold. As the filmmaker has remarked in several interviews, the marriage is depicted in metaphorical parallels with Sita and Ram or Shiva and Parvathi. There is no villain in this story. Neither the father nor the maths professor is a harsh disciplinarian. And the best part is that the film never tries to preach a message about how toxic the education system is or how dictatorial teachers are; it’s a purely human narrative.

How blessed we are to get to witness a performer like Nivetha Thomas. Those tiny moments as she navigates the ebbs and flows of her house, the way she plays chess with her son, gets her husband ready, tastes the bits of the dish she so lovingly makes, and engages in the curious questioning of her children, all while mouthing the Chittoor dialect, make for moments of fine art. Nivetha exceeds the mechanical debate of other-language actors working in Telugu. She goes beyond just doing the job; it’s always the stars she seems to be aiming for. Though it's obviously a treat to watch her as the master of this universe, the director goes above and beyond, providing additional delight in the form of Arundev Pothula, who plays Arun in the film. Arun is a dynamic character straight out of a Telugu novel because he is more than just a troubled child; he is an active, never-giving-up, bright-eyed kid who has the courage to tackle any zeroes and minuses life throws at him. And those guts come from his formidable mother.

For a brief moment, I felt like the only person in the packed dark theatre hall as Saraswati, the tenth-failed mother, explains to her restless son why zero, while having no value, determines the worth of a number simply by being adjacent to it. It is commendable how the film immerses you in the micro-world of children while also delivering a payoff. Children's world is always full of questions since they are constantly absorbing from every moment of life. The tender attention required as a child grows and learns the essentials of life is something that not many adults possess. But writer Nanda Kishore Emani delves beyond the surface in a way that is maddeningly beautiful. If you are to nitpick, the philosophical dialogue gets repetitive, but even this would work for most. 

Transporting a viewer to another world is an act many films can pull off, but transporting you to your own world and making you win—now that is an act that filmmakers seem to have forgotten. And films like 35 have the audacity to come around these cynical times and sweep you off your feet. Take some time, go watch this film with family, and come back beaming.
