Patient Medical Homes
Patient medical homes have been formed at five Island primary care locations, beginning the shift in primary health care from solo family practices to collaborative health care and better access to care for Islanders.
Patient Medical Homes deliver team-based care through a model that has been developed and endorsed by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).

Nursing in PEI
Types of nurses in prince edward island.
There are three categories of nurses in Prince Edward Island: licensed practical nurses (LPNs), registered nurses (RNs), and nurse practitioners (NPs). Provincial law protects the title ‘nurse’, and only those registered and licensed in one of these three categories can call themselves a ‘nurse’ and use the designation of ‘LPN’, ‘RN’, or ‘NP’. The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Prince Edward Island regulates the practice of LPNs, while The College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of Prince Edward Island (CRNMPEI), regulates the practice of RNs and NPs.
While the overall goal of nursing is to promote optimum health and prevent illness, the roles and responsibilities of RNs and NPs differ. These differences are based on provincial law as well as individual nurses’ initial and ongoing education, experience, and professional development. In their work settings, nurses practice together and with other healthcare providers to ensure quality care. In some situations, the roles and responsibilities of nurses may overlap. More information about the scope of practice of RNs and NPs can be found in the PEI Registered Nurses Regulations .
