Turn your presentation into a video
When you make a recording of a presentation, all its elements (narration, animation, pointer movements, timings, and so on) are saved in the presentation itself. In essence, the presentation becomes a video that your audience can watch in PowerPoint.
So you have two options for turning your presentation into a video that's ready to view:
Save/export your presentation to a video file format (.mp4 or .wmv).
Save your presentation as a PowerPoint Show (.ppsx) file. (A PowerPoint Show appears full-screen in Slide Show, ready to view immediately.)
Save as a video file
After you've created your slides and recorded any timing and narrations and laser pointer gestures that you want to include, you're ready to create a video file.
On the File menu, select Save to ensure all your recent work has been saved in PowerPoint presentation format (.pptx).
Select File > Export > Create a Video . (Or, on the Recording tab of the ribbon, select Export to Video .)
In the first drop-down box under the Create a Video heading, select the video quality you want, which pertains to the resolution of the finished video. The higher the video quality, the larger the file size. (You may want to test them to determine which one meets your needs.)

The second drop-down box under the Create a Video heading tells whether your presentation includes narration and timings. (You may switch this setting if you like.)
If you haven't recorded timed narration, by default the value is Don't Use Recorded Timings and Narrations .
The default time spent on each slide is 5 seconds. You can change that timing in the Seconds to spend on each slide box. To the right of the box, select the up arrow to increase the duration, or select the down arrow to decrease the duration.
If you have recorded a timed narration, by default the value is Use Recorded Timings and Narrations .
Select Create Video .
In the File name box, enter a file name for the video, browse for the folder that will contain this file, and then select Save .
In the Save as type box, choose either MPEG-4 Video or Windows Media Video .
You can track the progress of the video creation by looking at the status bar at the bottom of your screen. The video creation process can take up to several hours depending on the length of the video and the complexity of the presentation.
Tip: Â Â Â For a long video, you can set it up to be created overnight. That way, itâll be ready for you the following morning.
To play your newly-created video, go to the designated folder location, and then double-click the file.
Save as a PowerPoint Show
When someone opens a PowerPoint Show file, it appears full-screen in Slide Show, rather than in edit mode. The viewer begins watching the presentation immediately.
On the File menu, select Save As .
Choose the folder location where you want to store your PowerPoint Show file.
In the Save as type box, choose PowerPoint Show (*.ppsx) .
Select Save .
Why turn your presentation into a video?
When you want to give a high-fidelity version of your presentation to colleagues or customers (either as an e-mail attachment, published to the web, on a CD or DVD), save it and let it play as a video.
You can save your presentation as either an MPEG-4 video file (.mp4) or a .wmv file. Both formats are widely supported and can be streamed over the internet.
Some tips to remember when recording your presentation as a video:
You can record and time voice narration and laser pointer movements in your video.
You can control the size of the multimedia file and the quality of your video.
You can include animations and transitions in your movie.
Viewers do not need to have PowerPoint installed on their computers to watch it.
If your presentation contains an embedded video, the video will play correctly without your needing to control it.
Depending on the content of your presentation, creating a video may take some time. Lengthy presentations and presentations with animations, transitions, and media content will likely take longer to create. Fortunately, you can continue to use PowerPoint while the video is being created
What parts of a presentation won't be included in a video?
The following items won't be included in a video that you create using PowerPoint:
Media inserted in previous versions of PowerPoint. To include these, you can convert or upgrade the media object.
For example, if you inserted the media using PowerPoint 2007, it will be linked and it will play in the presentation. However, when you export the file as a video, the linked media will be dropped. You can convert the file to the new file format (select the File tab, and under Info , select Convert ), or you can right-click the media object and then select it to upgrade; it will embed the file and export it correctly.
QuickTime media (unless you have a third-party QuickTime codec named ffdShow installed and you have optimized for compatibility)
OLE/ActiveX controls
What to do with your video after creating it
After you create a video, you can share it with others by using the following methods:
Email your presentation to others
Save to a file share or other location
Upload it to your organization's Microsoft Stream video-sharing site , as described in the next section, "Save to a video-sharing site."
Save to the Microsoft video-sharing site
After you've created the video file, you can upload it to a video-sharing site. Microsoft Stream is an enterprise video service where people in an organization can upload, view, and share videos. Microsoft 365 business or education subscribers have access to this service from within PowerPoint for Microsoft 365.Â
Select File > Export , and then select Publish to Microsoft Stream .
Type a title and a description for the video.
Set other options, including whether you want others in your organization to have permission to see the video:
Select the Publish button.
The upload process can take several minutes, depending on the length of the video. A status bar at the bottom of the PowerPoint window tracks the progress, and PowerPoint shows a message when the upload is finished:
Select the message to go directly to the video playback page on Microsoft Stream.

Your video presentation doesnât need to bore your attendees to tears. Here are seven strategies to keep participants engaged and awake.
Youâve been asked to give a video presentation at a virtual conference. Youâre excited about the opportunity to share your expertise, but youâre also worried about how youâll manage to hold interest.Â
Letâs face it: Itâs notoriously tough to keep people focused during virtual presentations.Â
In fact, 67% of workers say they find it easier to be distracted during virtual meetings compared to in-person ones. Even worse? 55% of respondents admit that theyâve checked their emails during those virtual sessions.Â
7 tips for video presentations that donât make eyes glaze over
So, are you doomed to spend an hour talking to a bunch of people whoâd rather be elsewhere? Will all of your time spent preparing be wasted as you watch attendees turn off their cameras and do who knows what as you ramble on?
Not quite. Rest assured, there are some tips you can put into play to deliver a compelling video presentation that keeps your virtual event participants on the hook.Â
1. Curate the right environment
If you want other people to be totally tuned into the topic youâre presenting, you need to start by creating a non-distracting environment â both for your benefit and your participantsâ.Â
There are a number of different ways to ensure you have the right setting for your virtual presentation, including:
Finding a quiet space where youâll be free from interruptions (like barking dogs or kids who choose the most inopportune time to come in and ask for fruit snacks).
Cleaning up your background so that youâre the main focus. Taking a few minutes to tidy up is better than turning on a virtual background, as the majority of people prefer to see the actual room behind the speaker.Â
Ensuring you have appropriate lighting so that attendees can see your face without shadows and glares.Â
Think about it this way: Would you want to deliver an in-person presentation in a dimly-lit room with laundry baskets in the background? We didnât think so.Â
While getting your space ready for a virtual or hybrid event will take a little more work than simply showing up to a well-prepped conference center, itâs well worth the effort to curate an environment that shows youâre ready to get down to business.Â
2. Check your technologyÂ
Can you see my screen? Hold on a second, I just need to click over to my slides. Is my audio echoing for anybody else?Â
Nothing derails your presentation faster than frustrating technology glitches. Theyâre annoying for both you and your participants, and unfortunately those delays can mean that you lose the attention and trust of your attendees before you even get to the content of your presentation.
Plus, they immediately slow you down and shake your confidence. Theyâre tough to bounce back from, especially when you feel frazzled and like you need to rush through certain aspects of your talk in order to make up for that lost time.
For that reason, itâs crucial that you triple-check all of your technology during your presentation rehearsals. And, itâs smart to use a video meeting platform thatâs simple and intuitive. Exercises and games
Questions and open discussions
Videos or demonstrations
This array of formats keeps your content fresh and your attendees on their toes. And itâs far preferable to spending an hour reading from your slides.
4. Leverage storytellingÂ
Imagine that youâre attending a presentation about the importance of accurate record keeping.Â
Do you want to hear a bunch of statistics about why it matters? Or do you want to hear about the time a single spreadsheet error led to a synchronized swimming event being oversold by 10,000 tickets at the 2012 London Olympics?
The latter is far more compelling, isnât it? And it speaks to the power of incorporating storytelling into your presentations. In fact, researchers have found that stories can cause oxytocin synthesis in our brains. That not only gets us more engaged, but also inspires us to take action.Â
So, look for places where you can incorporate anecdotes or real-world examples. Those will hit home with your attendees far more than endless facts and figures.Â
5. Remember that your visual aids should be visual
Weâve all sat through presentations where the presenterâs slides were filled with walls of text or bullet points of what they wanted to cover.
Of course, you can (and should) have your own notes to guide you through all of the important points of your presentation â but that doesnât mean your audience needs to read along with you. Not only is it boring, but one study found that showing audiences the exact same words that were being spoken reduces audience comprehension.Â
Your visual aids should be, well, visual . Rather than filling your PowerPoint, Keynote, Prezi, or Google Slides with meaningless text, keep your slide deck interesting with:
Bite-sized statistics or facts
Graphs and charts
Relevant images
Even the occasional funny GIF or meme can keep your audience more engaged with your presentation (not to mention lighten the mood and inspire a little chuckle).Â
6. Use breakout sessions to boost engagementÂ
If you have a particularly large group of attendees or a longer time slot for your virtual presentation, youâll likely notice more participation and engagement if you break people into small groups â at least for a portion of your session.
There are a number of reasons for that, but much of it is owed to the fact that tighter groups reduce the potential for social loafing â a psychological concept that states that people put in less effort when theyâre in groups than they do when theyâre on their own, because they assume that other group members will help shoulder the burden.

7. Invite active participation
Breakout groups certainly help people feel like theyâre part of the discussion â rather than being preached to for an hour or so. But, there are a few other things you can do to fuel the feeling that virtual attendees are active participants:Â
Encourage emoji reactions: Even if your attendees donât have their own cameras on, emoji reactions give them the opportunity to share how they feel. Believe it or not, the same part of our brain that processes facial expressions also processes emojis. Whereby has live emoji reactions, by the way.Â
Periodically stop for questions: While you donât want tangents to throw your presentation off track, skipping any questions until the end of your talk can make attendees feel unheard and disconnected. Plus, stopping regularly to give people a chance to ask questions as they come up almost always leads to more productive, engaging, and insightful conversations.
Involve attendees in examples and demonstrations: This is tougher to do during a virtual event than an in-person one, but find ways to involve your audience members whenever you can. Have them act out an example scenario or ask them to share something with the group. The more you can work them into your presentation, the more alert theyâll be.Â
Is everybody still awake out there?
When one in three people admit theyâve felt drowsy or even dozed off during a work meeting, the last thing you want is for the presentation you worked so hard on to quite literally lull people to sleep.Â

Videos can make presentations even more interesting or exciting. If you're looking to add a video to your Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, it's easy to do so. We'll show you how.
In PowerPoint, you can either embed a video or link to a video from your presentation. If you embed a video, your video becomes part of the presentation, which increases the overall size of the presentation file.

If you link to a video, PowerPoint only adds a reference to that video in your presentation. The downside of this method is that you need to send the video file separately if you share your presentation with someone. In this guide, we'll focus on embedding a video in your presentation so you don't have to worry about sending separate files. And, if you're looking to add a YouTube video to your presentation , there's a way to do that, too.

PowerPoint supports multiple video formats, including ASF, AVI, MP4, M4V, MOV, MPG, MPEG, and WMV. If your video is already in one of these formats, you can quickly add that to your presentation.
If your video is in another format, you can convert it to a supported format and then add it to your presentation.

First, make sure the video you want to add to your presentation is saved on your Windows or Mac computer. Then, open your presentation with PowerPoint on your computer.
On the PowerPoint window, in the left sidebar, click the slide in which you want to add a video.
At the top of the PowerPoint window, click the "Insert" tab.
In the "Insert" tab, under the "Media" section (which is to the extreme right side of the interface), click "Video."
You'll now see an "Insert Video From" menu. Here, select "This Device."
Your computer's standard "open" window will open. In this window, access the folder that has your video file. Then double-click your video file to add it to your presentation.
You'll see your selected video in your presentation. To resize this video, click it and use the handles around the video to change its size. Then drag the video to place it at its desired location in your slide.
If you'd like to test the video, at the bottom-left corner of the video, click the play icon.
And you're all set.
Now that you have added a video to your presentation, you might want to change how it plays in your slides. In PowerPoint, you have multiple ways to change your video's playback.
To access these playback options, first, click your video in your presentation. Then, at the top of the PowerPoint window, click "Playback."
In the "Playback" tab, under the "Video Options" section, you will find various options to manage your video's playback.
For example, to change how your video starts to play in your presentation, click the "Start" drop-down menu and select one of these options:
- In Click Sequence : This plays your video in the click sequence. This means if you press the button for the next slide, your video will play.
- Automatically : This option automatically plays your video when the slide with your video opens.
- When Clicked On : Select this option to play your video only when you click it.
The other options are "Play Full Screen," which opens your video in full screen, and "Loop Until Stopped" that plays your video over and over again until you manually stop it.
Before you close PowerPoint, make sure you save your presentation so that your embedded video is saved with it. Do this by clicking File > Save in PowerPoint's menu bar.

How to write a video script
Before we go anywhere with video, let’s be clear about this: keep it simple. As you plan your video and write your script, it’s all too easy to start throwing all sorts of cool ideas out. After all, you can do anything in a video, right?
With an unlimited budget, sure. But we’re willing to bet your budget is limited. So keep your videos as simple as possible. You’d be surprised how much work it takes to produce very minimal on-screen effects.
Planning your video script
With all that in mind, start planning your script. Some writers call this “ prewriting ”.
1. Identify your audience.
This is a staple in any sort of marketing or copywriting. You need to address a very specific customer with your content, otherwise it won’t resonate. It can be tempting to make it as broad as possible in order to address every potential customer. Avoid this temptation. Something that’s for everybody appeals to nobody.

2. Choose a goal
Next you need to know what the point of the video is. This will depend on where your audience will see the video, what stage of the marketing funnel the video will be used at, and what you want viewers to do after they watch the video, and the key performance indicators you use to track your success.
But if you want viewers to do something specific after seeing the video, you’ll need a call to action. Just make sure your call to action aligns with the purpose of the video. Have a look at this video for FreshBooks. The purpose of the video is quite clear, even if it’s not explicitly stated.
3. Decide on a central character
If your video features too many people, it will be difficult to follow and the focus will stray from the main point. Identifying the primary character does two things:
- It simplifies and focuses your video.
- It pushes you toward creating a story (if your video needs it).
Some videos, like a product overview, have very little story in them. However, it’s still best if a single person does most of the talking. If you’re producing a video with a narrative arc, it’s best to focus on the main character.
In either case, you need to know who’s going to be on screen most of the time. If you need two or more people in the video, choose one person to show for a majority of the screen time.
Bonus tip: If you can, use the same person as the spokesperson in all your videos. This creates continuity and familiarity in your video content. That’s why brands often create characters that almost function as mascots, like Flo from Progressive.
4. Identify the main point of the video
This boils down to a very simple exercise: tell someone why they should watch this video in one sentence.
When you start writing your script, put the answer to this question as close to the beginning as possible. Let viewers know what they’re going to get right up front, and you’ll retain more viewers.
As a bonus, identifying the point of the video will also tell you what sort of video you need.
Writing your video script
If your planning is good, the writing will be fairly easy. You’ve already created your map. Just follow it.
5. Write out visual and audio elements.
This is super important if you’re doing any sort of voiceover with visuals that cut to different shots. But even if your video is a single shot of someone talking, write the visual and audio aspects into your script.
The script is a set of directions for whoever is shooting the video, and you want the video team to know, without a doubt, what’s supposed to be happening with both the visual and audio elements.
A simple table with two columns is an easy way to format your script. It’s easy to read and see how the video will look and sound. This is a brief two-column video script example:
Add as many boxes as you need to cover all the shots in your video.
6. Write your script, then trim to fit
Depending on the sort of video you’re making, you may need to cram everything into 15 or 30 seconds, or you could have a full three minutes or more to work with.
Either way, plan for 125 to 150 words of dialogue per minute.
But when you start writing, focus on saying everything you want to say. Once you’ve got all the dialogue written, check your word count, then start axing and rewording until it fits your time limit.
This method makes your script clear and concise. It forces you to keep only the dialogue you need .
Here are a few brief tips for writing dialogue:
Speak directly to the audience. Use “you” and talk to your viewers. It’s more personable, and people prefer being spoken to rather than being spoken at.
Write it the way you would say it. Your audience isn’t going to read your script. So write what you would actually say, not what looks best on paper.
- Read your script out loud. This is the only way to find out if your dialogue sounds natural. If you make changes, read it out loud again.
Once the dialogue is clean, you’ll know roughly how much footage you need to shoot and what shots you need. If you’re using a voiceover, be sure to shoot some extra footage to account for pauses in the dialogue and visuals that don’t make the cut.

7. Stick to the video script (mostly)
This is technically not part of writing the script. But it’s related to writing your script. It boils down to one question: why bother writing the script if you’re not going to follow it? That’s like paying an architect to draw a floor plan, then just building your house all willy-nilly.
Once you start filming, follow your script as much as possible. Some minor changes are fine, and professional actors or voice actors can contribute some flair. Or, if you find you don’t have the resources to do what you planned, you may need to make changes or go back and rewrite the script.
But avoid making major changes to the script on the fly just because you think of something cool. Ad hoc changes and ad-libbing rarely turn out for the best. Explosions are cool, but don’t blow everything up just to have some fun.
How to write the right kind of video script
Marketing videos accomplish two things:
- They educate viewers.
- They persuade viewers.
Some videos only do one of the two and some do both, but we’re going to split the various types into one of these two categories to keep things simple.

- Explaining how your product or service works.
- Introducing what your brand does.
The keys to success with educational videos are brevity and visuals.
Concise information is easier to remember. That’s why phone numbers are seven digits long. So keep your video short and break it up into manageable blocks of information to help viewers retain what you’ve shown them.

Bodo/Glimt are once again at the center of a small scandal related to Roma, their old rivals from the Conference League run in 2022.
In the presentation clip of Philip Zinckernagel, the recently acquired Danish winger, a sticker with the words âRoma merdaâ (Roma is shi*t) sensationally appears out of the blue.
In the video, Zinckernagel watches a film about Zorro, recalling the âZâ of his last name. At the end of the clip, the camera moves to the back of a computer, where the sticker is clearly visible.
The episode rekindles the old rivalries between Bodo/Glimt and Roma, dating back to the 2021/2022 Conference League season, when the two teams faced each other with contrasting results: a sensational 6-1 for the Norwegians in the first leg and a draw 2-2 in the second leg, followed by Romaâs victory in the quarter-finals with a 5-2 result on aggregate, which finally led to the European triumph against Feyenoord.

What is flipped learning?
It is a pedagogical approach in which âdirect instruction moves from the group learning space to the individual learning spaceâ, according to the Flipped Learning Network . What this means in practice is, typically, students engage with recorded lectures or other learning materials to build their knowledge on a topic ahead of their live class.
This changes the classroom into âa dynamic, interactive learning environment where the educator guides students as they apply concepts and engage creatively in the subject matterâ.

Traditionally, flipped learning activities have included students playing pre-recorded lectures, completing allocated reading or other preparatory materials, participating in online discussions and peer-to-peer sharing outside class time. However, one underexplored activity in flipped learning is student presentations.
Presentations are often used as an effective way for students to demonstrate their mastery of concepts and principles. This can include articulating what they already know, applying learned theories to solve real-world problems, and demonstrating their ability to ask more in-depth questions, a key element of Socratic learning â learning by asking questions in a cascading fashion .
But staging student presentations during classes can be difficult, owing to constraints on time. Typically, a project team comprises four to five students. Each student presents one aspect of a project and is individually assessed. Assuming the teacher allocates one three-hour session for this activity, for a class size of 40 to 50 students, each student has only two to three minutes for their presentation. A whole teamâs presentation, including Q&A, discussion and teacher feedback, can last up to 20 minutes. This is hardly sufficient time for the teacher to ask in-depth questions, offer feedback for improvement or for students to respond comprehensively.
Students waiting to present are too focused on their own impending performance to properly learn from their peers.
Plus, with the advancement of artificial intelligence tools , teachers need to determine if a studentâs presentation slides have been partially or wholly generated by AI and, if so, judge what the student has actually learned.
At PolyU, we have been experimenting with flipping student presentations. Many subjects include assessed projects, and we apply flipped learning to project team presentations.
How do flipped presentations work?
We ask students to pre-record their project presentations in their teams before presentation day. The teacher watches the recorded presentations beforehand. During the class presentation time, students do not need to present the whole project but can be asked to:
- Re-present selective slides
- Clarify various parts of their presentation
- Elaborate on specific issues that may or may not have been highlighted in their presentation
- Respond to hypothetical questions, such as âwhat-ifâ scenarios, about their project.
Our experience, informed by feedback from teachers and students, has shown that this flipped learning approach to student presentations frees up a lot of time for teachers to ask in-depth questions, further discuss specific issues with students and provide feedback to teams as well as the whole class.
Reviewing the recorded presentations prior to presentation day means the teacher arrives better informed about the overall performance, common mistakes and areas for improvement. This leads to fairer assessments for all students and highlights areas of focus for future teaching. Marks are not allocated until the project presentation session is over.
Other benefits of this approach include:
- Students are able to review or rate peer presentations
- Students can refine their work before they formally submit
- It facilitates active learning
- It provides a digital record of all deliverables
- It results in a repository of representative student work.
As the teacher often sets a maximum recording duration for each video, students have to practise time management in their presentations.

Here's just some of the ways you can make your message sing. 1. Start with a bold statement. A bold statement can capture your audience's attention right from the get-go.
