Advantages and disadvantages of co-education

Have you ever thought about the advantages and disadvantages of co-education? Well, in this article, we will cover all the advantages and disadvantages of co-education system.

The topic of co-education has always been popular in our society. There is always a positive as well as a negative side to co-education, while there are more advantages and fewer disadvantages. Co-education is a schooling system where girls and boys are taught together under the same roof, in other words, we can call it mixed-gender education.

The idea of a co-education system was introduced back in the 1830s when it was decided that girls and boys would study and learn alongside. Since then, this co-education system has been adopted by many developing countries and they highly encourage it because they think it helps in developing the personality of men and women which is later quite helpful for them as they enter the real world.

Advantages of co-education

1. better communication skills.

It is widely known that it is an important factor that kids develop communication skills from a young age and there is no better way than a co-education system that would help kids in building the skills that they need. Co-education plays a huge role in this as it allows the children to talk to people of any gender with ease. If kids are not given this opportunity, then it would affect them in the longer run as it would be difficult for them to interact with people and communicate with them.

2. Preparing for the real world

Co-education can be the perfect tool of shaping young minds for the real world in the long run. No matter where they go, men and women must be in constant contact with one and another throughout in the corporate world. By experiencing this at an early age they will find it much easier having to build relationships and work with the opposite genders.

3. Gender equality

We live in a time where gender equality is an important factor no matter what people say or do. Co-education provides an environment where children from an early age tend to learn about these things which help them in shaping their minds. They are taught and treated in a way that is healthy for them as it promotes equality from the very start of their education. Children that are taught in such an environment tend to be more respectful as they grow up and appreciate the opinions of opposite genders and think that they all are equal.

4. Healthy Competition

Competition is always there no matter if you’re a kid or an adult and it is a key factor in our lives. Healthy competition in an education system plays an extremely vital role as it helps the kids to deal with success or failure in school life or later in the corporate real world. Be it working in a team together for a project, preparing for a presentation or working alone, it can help in overcoming the barriers of shyness and create a rather comfortable environment. It would help the pupils and motivate them to share their ideas or opinions with a group of people without any fear. It would help in creating a balanced environment.

5. Breaking down barriers

Stereotypes have always been a huge problem in every society. These stereotypes cause issues for boys and girls in specific roles, but co-education systems can help in diminishing these barriers. For example, some girls would not be offered to work with robots or electrical cars as they are seen to be for boys, similarly boys would be discouraged to take the subject of fashion and textile or food nutrition as they are seen something for girls but these things don’t matter in a co-education system as whether it is a boy or a girl, they all are treated the same way and are encouraged to take similar subjects or take parts in activities.

6. Mutual understanding and respect for the opposite gender

Some recent study revealed that children behave in a much more decent and civilized way when they are taught in a co-education school. Co-education is a key part of building the characters of these kids, both girls and boys. These things emphasize, focusing on how important it is for children to respect and listen to the opposite genders, it also helps in developing and creating a better understanding level that eventually helps in reducing any kind of discrimination regardless of any gender.

7. Offering diversity in schools

If young boys and girls are exposed to diversity at an early age, it will be super helpful as they grow up, it would be much easier for them to adapt into different environments. This kind of set up offers to be in teaching styles that portray other forms of diversity such as social barriers or different cultures.

8. Improving teamwork

With the help of co-education schools, it helps the students to work and do assignments together. This not only helps them while they are young, but it also helps them when they grow up to be in the corporate world. Male and female both will gain confidence in working with the opposite genders, not only this, but they get to share their share of ideas with each other that will help to improve their thinking ability and learn to respect other people’s opinions even if they differ from one another. Exchanging ideas will boost their confidence and thinking level.

9. Developing self-esteem

As you all know, self-esteem is extremely important, and it must be built in a good way at an early age. Co-education systems are the best solution for this. Children must go to a co-education school as this will help in building their self-esteem, it is a place where they will meet and face people with all types of personalities which would be beneficial for them as they grow up, it will not only boost up their self-esteem but will also teach them to respect each other’s self-esteem. This would help the young minds to step out of their comfort zone confidently.

Disadvantages of co-education

Though the advantages weigh way more than the disadvantages of the co-education systems, every system has its good and bad sides. Hence, here are a couple of disadvantages of co-education.

1. Unwanted arguments/fights causing unhealthy environment

Since both these genders have different schools of thought, arguments are bound to happen. If the arguments are not handled in a proper manner, then it may cause an unpleasant environment for the students which might take a toll on their mental health as well as their behaviors. Thus, it will divert the attention of students from concentrating on their studies.

2. Lower concentration level

Studying together may cause a lower level of concentration in the studies as younger minds are known to be easily diverted into other things so this may have an adverse effect on the studies of the children.

3. Less confidence

Some kids may not be confident enough to speak up in the class in front of their classmates. They might not be able to perform well, hence this would cause issues in participating in class projects, presentations or even asking questions. Kids might not feel comfortable with the opposite gender being in the class which would affect their studies badly.

4. Limitation of resources

Co-education systems mean that there will be more pupils in classes which will put a high strain on the resources available at the institutions which are already very limited. Due to this reason, it will cause quite a lot of problems for the performance and results of the students.

5. Early relationships

Students are likely to spend most of their time in school, which means that opposite genders have plenty of time to interact with each other, this can lead to engaging in relationships. Students at an early age are immature or careless and indulging into unethical relationships may cause some serious problems.

6. Unethical activities

As young students are immature, there is a high chance of risk that these students end up indulging in unethical activities or crimes that can destroy their future. Such unethical activities can be anything from flirting to lying or stealing to parents or early affairs. One of the biggest and most serious issue is sexual harassment in these institutions. Many cases are registered of sexual assault.

Despite all the advantages and disadvantages of co-education, it is still growing rapidly in most parts of the world. It totally depends, if we start to take things in a more positive way only then will we achieve fruitful results. We are the ones who need to teach and train the minds of people that co-education is productive for our society.

To conclude, co-education is an excellent system which will help our children in all spheres of life. It will not only help build up their confidence but also in their all-round development which would benefit them in the real world.

coeducation , education of males and females in the same schools. A modern phenomenon, it was adopted earlier and more widely in the United States than in Europe, where tradition proved a greater obstacle.

Coeducation was first introduced in western Europe after the Reformation, when certain Protestant groups urged that girls as well as boys should be taught to read the Bible. The practice became especially marked in Scotland, the northern parts of England, and colonial New England , where young children of both sexes attended dame school s. In the latter half of the 18th century, girls were gradually admitted to town schools. The Society of Friends in England as well as in the United States were pioneers in coeducation as they were in universal education, and, in Quaker settlements in the British colonies, boys and girls generally attended school together. The new free public elementary, or common , schools, which after the American Revolution supplanted church institutions, were almost always coeducational, and by 1900 most public high schools were coeducational as well. Many private colleges from their inception admitted women (the first was Oberlin College in Oberlin , Ohio), and many state universities followed their example. By the end of the 19th century, 70 percent of American colleges were coeducational. In the second half of the 20th century, many institutions of higher learning that had been exclusively for persons of one sex became coeducational.

In western Europe the main exponents of primary and secondary coeducation were the Scandinavian countries. In Denmark coeducation extends back to the 18th century, and in Norway coeducation was adopted by law in 1896. In Germany , on the other hand, until the closing decades of the 19th century it was practically impossible for a girl to get a secondary education , and, when girls’ secondary schools were introduced, their status was inferior to that of schools for boys. At present in many large municipalities, such as Bremen, Hamburg, and Berlin, coeducation at the primary level is the rule; at the secondary level there has been little change.

Antagonism to coeducation in England and on the European continent diminished more rapidly in higher education than in secondary. In England, Girton College at Cambridge was established for women in 1869, and the London School of Economics was opened to women in 1874. Germany permitted women to matriculate in 1901, and by 1910 women had been admitted to universities in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Austria-Hungary, France, and Turkey.

Since World War II , coeducation has been adopted in many developing countries; China and Cuba are outstanding examples. There are many other countries, however, where social conditioning and religious sanctions have limited its success. In most Arab countries, for example, girls tend to drop out of coeducational schools at the age of puberty.

However, apart from western countries, co-education has also spread in developing countries like India. We find co-education in different schools and colleges. However, yet there are few educational institutions, which strictly impart education to either genders.

Even today, during the times of urbanization, industrialization and modernization traditionaland orthodox people are not in favour of co-education. They believe that similar kind of education for both boys and girls is not good. The some main reason for this is that both the genders have to play different roles when they become adult citizens. In addition, the existence of opposite gender can fascinate the attention of pupils towards each other resulting in lack of educational achievements. Thus, according to such people it is advisable to have separate educational institutions for boys and girls.

With the passage of time, many changes have come up in society. Professionals involved in the teaching stream have made efforts to make masses realise the advantages of co-education. Coeducation has helped both men and women to share different works and experiences in different fields. Co-education has shown that if girls and boys are nurtured together in schools and colleges, they can talk and exchange ideas freely without barriers and accept each other as human beings.

Co-education helps in improving the general performance of an individual. Such kind of education encourages the spirit of healthy competition between boys and girls. They try hard to do well in their exams and in other fields to gain each other’s appreciation.

Men have a natural habit to impress women. As a result, they behave and dress well. Men acquire the qualities of being well mannered, considerate and courteous. Women too show admirable behaviour. In the same way, boys in schools and colleges work much harder. The girls too in order to perform well than boys devote a great deal of time in studies. Hence, co-education provides the atmosphere for a healthy competition.

The system of co-education helps the girls to become brave and courageous. They are able to face the male dominated society and can fight for their rights in society. Therefore, co-education is essential for the development of tolerant, liberal, progressive and open-minded society where men and women both co-operate to build a better world to live in.

Set 2: Essay On Co-Education

Co-education means boys and girls receiving education together in one and the same institution. Co-education is in vogue in all advanced countries of the world like England, America, Russia, France and even Turkey, Our Constitution has done away with all the discriminations on the basis of religion, class or sex.

Woman in India today enjoys full freedom. She enjoys an equal status with man. She has a right to vote just as man has. She is eligible for the highest position in the State. She is no longer the slave of man. She is no longer a house drudge. She has came into her own.

We have to provide her educational facilities equal with man. We have not enough women’s colleges to accommodate all the female aspirants after higher education nor does our present budget allow us to open separate women’s colleges. Girls, therefore, must join co-educational institutions if they are not to be left behind in the race for progress. Girls also prefer to join co-educational institutions not for the sake of romance and sight-seeing but because they are better staffed and better equipped. The staff in a purely women’s institution is seldom stable for as soon as a woman lecturer is married, she resigns and goes away to the station of her husband. The education of the girl scholars thus suffers in consequence.

Our orthodox brethren assert that free mixing of boys and girls would lead to romance and love marriages which usually have an unhappy ending. Such fears are unfounded and base-less. In a coeducational institution, boys and girls try to behave better in the presence of others. The college life becomes sweet and charming and attendance also improves. Men and women mix freely in trains, buses, cinemas, places of worship, in the family and fairs. Heavens won’t fall if they mix in colleges. When there is a larger number of girls in a college, they don’t attract attention. The novelty is worn off. Familiarity blunts the edge of curiosity and makes the whole thing look common. Co-education improves the moral tone of the students.

There is also distinct improvement in the university results, since co-education brings about healthy rivalry. The cost of education to the State is reduced. The same staff, the same building and furniture, can satisfy the educational needs of both the sexes. In a coeducational institution, boys and girls mix freely at the debates, in associations, clubs and societies attached to the institution and thus have ample opportunities of understanding one another’s viewpoint. As the public standard of morality is raised, co-education may be introduced with an advantage. The girls are prepared to shoulder with the boys.

Introduction: ‘ Co-education’ (abbreviated to co-ed or coed), also known as mixed-gender/sex education, means the education of boys and girls in the same educational institution and at the same time. In the primary stage, co-education has been the rule in all countries. In the university also, it is nowadays the rule almost everywhere. It is also felt that university students who have attained age and developed intelligence and a proper sense of their duties and responsibilities should be treated as matured and responsible citizens.

This method of education even though is becoming common all over the world, as there are still few parts of the country who sometimes feel, segregation is for the betterment of the learning process.

Modern-day education is primarily co-educational, but many single-sex educational institutions exist, and single-sex education is undergoing a rebirth of popularity.

Importance of Co-education: Co-education refers to providing education to both girls and boys together, without any discrimination (specifically gender discrimination). This is the actual meaning of coeducation explained in simple terms.

Gender discrimination is an outrageous atrocity that was and is still prevalent in a few countries. Though this is a common debatable topic, its time we need to change our opinions on such factors. Other few factors help us get rid of these outdated thinking.

In ancient times, Greece was the only country that allowed coeducation. But as time passed by, most of the countries in the world have adopted coeducation into their systems. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, coeducation grew much more widely accepted. In Great Britain, Germany, and the Soviet Union, the education of girls and boys in the same classes became an approved practice. The reason why coeducation is important is that it awakens the spirit of equality and comradeship among all students without any discrimination. By the end of the 19th century, 70 percent of American colleges were coeducational. In the second half of the 20th century, many institutions of higher learning that had been exclusively for persons of one sex became coeducational.

Problems and Effect’s of Co-education: The problem of co-education in the second stage was in the past a debatable subject. At this stage students are in their adolescence; free mixing between the sexes in this period of life, it is held, may disturb the normal development of their mind. This is more so, as at this stage the students are apt to be emotional and excitable.

A number of studies have been done researching the effects of coeducation and single-sex education. For years, a question many educators, parents, and researchers have been asking is whether or not it is academically beneficial to teach boys and girls together or separately at school. Some argue that coeducation has primarily social benefits, allowing males and females of all ages to become more prepared for real-world situations, whereas a student that is only familiar with a single-sex setting could be less prepared, nervous, or uneasy.

However, certain authors argue that at certain ages, students may be more distracted by the opposite sex in a coeducational setting. This distraction may affect how often a student is willing to raise his or her hand in class and urge students to be less focused on the lesson. Girls may have lower, more traditional aspirations and may choose occupations that tend to be more traditional in nature as opposed to science-related occupations. According to advocates of coeducation, without classmates of the opposite sex, students have social issues that may impact adolescent development. They argue that the absence of the opposite sex creates an unrealistic environment not duplicated in the real world. Some studies show that in classes that are separated by gender, male and female students work and learn on the same level as their peers, the stereotypical mentality of the teacher is removed, and girls are likely to have more confidence in the classroom than they would in a coeducational class.

There is so much to be learned these days progress going on everywhere, in all departments of life, and all over the world. Indeed, it is difficult to remain thoroughly up-to-date in this fast-developing world.

The wireless or, radio station helps us in some measures to keep pace with this world of progress. The radio’ selects, condenses and gives us bits of important information. It has programs to suit all types of listeners of all age groups.

Conclusion: There is no educational system in the world that has eradicated the negatives of the society but a co-educational system can work towards mending the gap between the genders and building a bridge of friendship.

It is now expected that the Radio and TV would henceforward be more impartial in catering to the common people. In this promising era of empowerment, though the debate on coeducation is going on, it is very essential to have a co-education system to fit the survival of an environment where both the genders have their place.

Co education, as the word denotes, means education of boys and girls together in schools and colleges. When both the sexes receive education jointly, there is no need for separate institutions. This is obviously an advantage from the economic point of view since separate institutions and separate staff for those institutions will entail greater expenditure.

When free contact between the sexes is allowed and encouraged, there can be no sex-suppression on either side. It is a psychological fact that the segregation of the sexes leads to many complexes. The age of puberty is crucial for both boys and girls, and if they get no chance to meet one another they are tormented by unhealthy, morbid thoughts.

Generally, boys, if left to themselves will show a tendency to indulge in vulgar talk and indecent jokes Vulgarity, indeed, thrives among boys. If, however, a group of students standing and chatting together includes a few girls, the boys will take care not to use any vulgar expressions.

Boys will thus steadily develop a habit of talking decently and behaving in a gentlemanly manner. The mutual understanding engendered co-education also leads to recognition by men of the desirability of giving to women a high status in social life. Hitherto men have been only too ready to oppose any rights or privileges being conceded to women.

But this opposition is mainly based upon an ignorance of the latent potentialities of women. Co-education dispels this by affording men a first-hand knowledge of the capacities and abilities of women.

Another salutary effect of co-education is that it produces a healthy spirit of competition between boys and girls. Each sex makes efforts to excel the other. Both are therefore urged to a more fruitful intellectual exertion than is the case in separate institutions for boys and girls.

But co-education is not an unmixed blessing, and its drawbacks should be clearly recognised and guarded against the system has been bitterly criticized by many educationists. In the first place, men find it difficult to concentrate upon studies in the presence of women.

The temptation to look at a pretty face is always irresistible for a man, whatever his age. In youth, this temptation is all the stronger. It is too much therefore, to expect boys to attend wholeheartedly to their lessons when a number of attractive girls are sitting by their side in the classroom.

Again, there is a real danger that the free inter-mixing of the sexes at the age of puberty may lead to sexual misconduct Boys will aim at entangling girls, and girls may become the willing victims of unscrupulous boys. This sort of thing, besides being undesirable and improper in itself, has an adverse effect upon the discipline of an institution.

The needs of women are different from those of men. The same curriculum does not suit both the sexes. Boys and girls should not, therefore, be given exactly the same sort of education. If the list of subjects suitable for study by the two sexes are compared, the number of subjects common to the two lists may appear few.

But it would be a waste of effort to admit boys and girls to the same college and then to teach them separately on account of the differences based on the belief that there are wide differences between the mental constitution of the two sexes.

Co-education in India has made considerable progress. It has already been introduced in most colleges. The number of girls in co-educational institutions nowadays is as large as that of boys.

On the other hand, some argue that co-education can have negative effects on students. One of the main concerns is that it can lead to distraction and a lack of focus. Boys and girls may be more inclined to pay attention to each other instead of their studies, which can negatively impact their academic performance. As the famous philosopher, Plato  said,

"Knowledge which is acquired under compulsion obtains no hold on the mind." 

Co-education can be distracting and may not be an ideal learning environment for some students.

Co-education means education of boys and girls in the same educational institution and at the same time. In the primary stage, co-education has been the rule in all countries. In the university also, it is nowadays the rule almost everywhere. It is also felt that university students who have attained age and developed intelligence and a proper sense of their duties and responsibilities should be treated as matured and responsible citizens.

Problems: The problem of co-education in the second stage was in the past a debatable subject. At this stage students are in their adolescence; free mixing between the sexes in this period of life, it is held, may disturb the normal development of their mind. This is more so, as at this stage the students are apt to be emotional and excitable.

Economic reasons: In a small but populous country like Bangladesh, at least for economic reasons, co-education is advisable. There have been arrangements for separate benches and girls in the classes, and separate playgrounds outside for boys. There have been men and women teachers, who can make the task of enforcing discipline and general supervision easily.

The objection to co-education was largely due to the conservative social prejudices of the people, fostered by the purdah system. But the tempo of modern life is fast breaking these barriers down. Co-education is now a widely accepted practice, more a rule than an exception. So the number of co-educational institutions is now on the increase.

Economic factor has been helpful in ensuring this social development. Late marriages compel parents to educate their daughters, while the economic needs of the family income, in order to maintain a higher standard of living. Hence is the number of separate girls' institutions is very few and co-education has become unavoidable.

Proposal for different types of educations : Opponents of co-education have based their arguments chiefly on the view that · girls should have a different type of education from that imparted to boys. They argue that the sphere of a girl's activities will, in the long run, be the home, and therefore their education should seek to turn out good mothers and housewives. This argument is now considered to be reactionary.

Women have, in most progressive and democratic countries, been given equal rights and opportunities and they have given a good account of themselves in winning in lair competition with boys.

Our constitution, in this respect, is as progressive as any, and our women have filled and are filling highly responsible posts with dignity and success.every big city and millions of people get their news, messages, and amusements over their wireless or, radio sets.

Family diversion: Broadcasting affords a pleasant family diversion. Nothing can be more charmingly domestic than to sit around the radio with one's parents, brothers, and sisters. They can easily listen to the musical programme, theatrical and other interesting topics and relays. One can take the pick of the items from the programme of almost any country in the world.

Broadcasting has made us citizens of the world in a very real sense. In this age, when one has hardly the time, one saves some amount of time listening to the news on the radio while having one's early breakfast. The newspaper with its peculiar appeal, can never be superseded, but it can be kept over for a more care-free period of leisure,- on the way to the office if one has a car, or in the intervals of the day's work. It is pleasant to be greeted every morning with that cheering.

Educational program: The wireless or, radio can be used for educational purpose, besides entertainment. There is so much to be learned these days – progress going on everywhere, in all departments of life, and all over the world. Indeed, it is difficult to remain thoroughly up-to-date in this fast developing world.

The wireless or, radio station helps us in some measures to keep pace with this world of progress. The radio' selects, condenses and gives us bits of important information. It has programmes to suit all types of listeners of all age groups. Thus for the common man, the radio has been a real teacher, a compendium book of knowledge for the ear.. 9

The nation's propaganda: The radio, however, largely is for propaganda by the government. To tell what people should or should not do, it controls in an increasing measure the daily life of individuals, the radio is now a handy medium for the government. Under such conditions, the radio acquires the importance of it now, beyond its very wide war-time use.

To think that the radio is meant only for the average and common man is a mistake. Even the intellectuals will find much in it to be interested. great thinkers, great scientists, great poets often speak to us through the radio.

An adjunct of broadcasting is the growth of television in which you can not only hear a man speaking but see the man speaking.

Importance: Broadcasting plays an important role in most respects. People can know everything through it. In America, in Ceylon, in Australia and in many other countries like Bangladesh, commercial advertisements are allowed to be put up in the air for money. So the radio has brightened the home; the sick bed it has cheered, the young mind it has instructed, and the trade it has set going.

To free the radio from the control of the ruling Coalition Govt. or party in power. Broadcasting either on radio or T.V. should be made free. The Ministry of Information should have no control over it. It will broadcast all the news, information and advertisements at its own suit will without remaining under the influence and control of any governing body related to politics. The information ministry should not instruct it to broadcast the ministry affairs only.

Conclusion: It is now expected that the Radio and TV would henceforward be more impartial in catering to the common people.

College essays matter. Here's how to write one that stands out | College Connection

Students facing the college application process typically dread one component: the Common App essay. 

Students are presented with six essay prompts, as well as a seventh option, which is “topic of your choice.” Students therefore have limitless possibilities for this essay which will be carefully reviewed by each college to which the student applies.

The goal of college admissions officers is to learn about the student who is applying: personal qualities, struggles, ambitions, priorities. AZ State Treasurer Kimberly Yee launches annual statewide essay contest

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Arizona State Treasurer Kimberly Yee launched her annual statewide essay contest.

5th and 6th graders can submit an essay describing their dream job and how they plan on achieving it.

A total of 20 winners will be selected and awarded $529 toward an AZ529 Education Savings Plan.

The plan offers a tax-free approach to setting money aside for higher education.

Yee says the goal of the contest is to increase awareness of proper educational saving to ensure students achieve their goals.

"It really brings an enormous excitement to talking about the future of their education, but more importantly setting money aside so that it grows over time… We'll guarantee a winner coming from Yuma," says Yee.

Moodle Response Templates Improve Student Responses and Speed Up Grading

Consider this scenario: you add open-ended questions (called “Essay” questions) to Moodle quizzes to add variety in question types. When you read student responses, however, you find they are problematic. Students missed answering certain parts of a question or wrote their responses in a difficult-to-comprehend format, leading to point deductions and lost time grading the questions.

These problems can be minimized by specifying a Response Template for essay questions in Moodle quizzes. I use a table format with cells for different parts of the response. Cells ensure that students provide clear and complete responses. A set format for responses streamlines grading.

Essay Questions in Moodle Quizzes

It is important to understand the nature of Essay questions in Moodle quizzes before discussing response templates. Importantly, essay questions are not just for essays. They are simply open-ended questions without a specific length or format for responses (unlike Short Answer questions, which have a strict format). Essay questions can be used to elicit responses of widely varying lengths. Responses can be anywhere from one word to multiple paragraphs depending on the nature of the question.

Although essay questions offer considerable flexibility, I have encountered difficulties when using them for questions with multiple parts requiring a longer answer. Students may fail to provide all of the requested information, mix up different parts of the question, or write one long, undifferentiated paragraph that is difficult to comprehend.

Using Moodle Response Templates 

How to add a response template in an essay question.

Response templates are easy to add into Moodle essay questions. As you create an essay question in a Moodle quiz, click on Response Template in the menu of options for the question and provide the template you have created that you want students to use for their responses.

I suggest using tables with cells that students fill in with their responses. Create the tables in Word or Google Docs and copy them into the Response Template cell when drafting the essay question. When students view the essay question in the quiz, the response template will appear in the response cell for them to fill in.

Pro Tip! Students need to see the entire response template when they view the essay question in the quiz. Under Response Options, select an Input Box size (5 lines to 40 lines) that will show the entire response template.

Creating Effective Response Templates

Response templates for essay questions should: 1. enable students to provide clear, complete, and coherent answers to open-ended questions and 2. specify a unified format for student answers that is efficient for the instructor to read. Follow these tips for creating effective response templates:

  • Basic set-up – I use response templates for essay questions that have two or more parts. After drafting this type of essay question, I review how many parts the question has and in what order. For clarity, I create a response template that mirrors this information exactly, using the same key phrases in the response template as in the question and placing them in the same order as in the question.
  • Examples – Let’s say an essay question has the following three parts, state the definition of codeswitching , describe an example of codeswitching provided by the author , and describe your own example of codeswitching . In the response template, I might say definition , author’s example , and your example , in that order. I also include a descriptive header in the response template, such as Understanding Codeswitching . Within each sub-question, I specify how long each part of the response should be so that students provide the level of detail I am looking for.

Response templates can also be used for solving a problem in a series of steps that need to be shown and that should be in a particular order. For example, in a phonology contrastive distribution problem, I might ask students to identify the sounds being compared , list the minimal pairs in the data (if any) , state the distribution of the sounds , etc. Each step of the problem represents one item in the response template.

  • An efficient format – In my experience, the best format for response templates is a two-column table with a row of cells for each sub-question. (A header is also needed to link the response table with the question.) Numbered prompts go in the cells of the left-hand column (e.g. definition , author’s example , your example or sounds , minimal pairs (if any) , distribution ). Student answers are written in the corresponding cells in the right-hand column. This format clearly shows whether the student answered all parts of the question and organizes student responses into chunks that are easy for the instructor to read and understand.

Conclusion 

Response templates are an invaluable tool for both students and instructors. They are helpful for encouraging students to organize their thinking for open-ended (Essay) questions in Moodle quizzes, eliciting complete and coherent student responses, and speeding up grading. Use them whenever an open-ended question requires multiple parts that need to be structured in a particular way .
