Crysis Remastered PC Update Adds Experimental “Ray Tracing Boost Mode”

Crysis Remastered

Crytek has just dropped its latest update for Crysis Remastered , and its big new feature is the experimental Ray Tracing Boost Mode. The goal of RT Boost Mode is to amp up the game’s reflections and other effects without affecting performance in a big way. Basically, it’s a fun thing that will make your game look extra shiny if that’s what you’re looking for.

Here’s the lowdown on Ray Tracing Boost Mode from the Crysis Remastered ver. 2.1.2 patch notes :

Experimental Ray Tracing Boost mode has been added. RT reflections have been enabled on nearly all surfaces in game. Ray randomization has enabled for proper support of rough surfaces. About 5% of specular reflectance has been added by default to all surfaces. During the development of Crysis Remastered, the team came up with the concept of adding a boost to ray tracing. This boost mode is more of a fun/experimental feature that we wanted to bring to all the ray tracing enthusiasts out there, to give more effects with minimal impact on performance. This option has been added to the in-game Graphic settings menu and can only be activated when Global Raytracing option is enabled.

Of course, update 2.1.2 also offers the usual array of fixes and tweaks, including…

Motion blur has been reactivated: Motion Blur was temporary disabled with 2.1.1 due to some issues where the motion blur effect was far more intense than intended. A fix has been implemented and motion blur is now available once again. Improvement made to the model for the SCAR. Fixed a bug that let players activate Anti-Aliasing (AA) from the options menu when DLSS is turned on. Developer Note: By design, AA is not supposed to work while NVIDIA’s DLSS is active. To increase the visibility on this, AA will now be greyed out once DLSS has been turned on. Fixed a UI issue that resulted in the selected difficulty settings appearing as set to “Easy” when another difficulty has been selected. Fixed some black or random textures that could appear when ray tracing is enabled on some PCs. Reduced and fixed several visible cracks that can appear in ray tracing geometry. Fixed a rare crash that could occur when Raytracing has been enabled. Fixed some incorrect texture tiling that could be visible when ray tracing is enabled. Fixed an issue that could result in stalls when loading ray tracing textures. Optimized the GPU memory usage in RTX mode (freed around 300+ MB on GPU). Fixed an issue with some light clip volumes support when ray tracing is enabled which will now allow for more precise RT shading. Fixed and issue that caused ray tracing Screen Space Reflections to not be visible on distant surfaces. Optimized ray tracing Screen Space Reflections performance for 4K.

Crysis Remastered ver 2.1.2 should be available to download now. The game’s last big PC update, ver. 2.1, added NVIDIA DLSS support – get the details on that here .

Hands-On With Crysis Remastered’s New Ray Tracing Upgrade

Experimental "Boost" mode introduced

Crysis Remastered Version 2.1.2

Crytek has just released a update for Crysis Remastered , version 2.1.2, with updates to the game's ray tracing graphics. The new update features an experimental Boost mode that pushes all the game's ray tracing reflections to even greater levels.

Boost mode enters Crysis Remastered as a purely experimental feature, but when enabled, it adds ray-traced reflections to almost every surface in-game, adds proper support for ray randomization on rough surfaces and boost specular reflectance on all surfaces by "about 5%," according to the announcement of the update.

Crysis Remastered Boost Mode: Hands-on

I tested the game with an RTX 2060 Super , with all the game's settings set to their maximum and DLSS set to balanced mode.

In testing the new Boost mode myself, I found the feature brings a very minor improvement to visual quality. As you can see in the screenshots below, surfaces like rocks and tree leaves look a bit brighter with Boost mode on. With Boost mode off, the game looks like it has higher contrast.

I also noticed that my framerate dropped by around 5 frames per second (fps) when using Boost mode, and that's with my average framerate being 35 fps with Boost mode disabled. That's a lot of lost performance for a minor bump in visual quality.

Overall, Boost mode seems like a cool idea, but I'd like to see a more noticeable visual improvement if it's to graduate past the experimental feature phase. As it stands, the ray tracing boost is barely noticeable at all when actually playing the game.

Interestingly, Crytek has been working on this boost mode for quite a while. In their announcement, the game's developers noted that Boost mode came about during the initial development of Crysis Remastered . Since the game is all about pushing PC graphics to the highest detail possible, the developers wanted to push the ray tracing envelope as high as they could too.

The devs added that the update is targeted toward "ray tracing enthusiasts" specifically. This is probably why Boost mode is an option all by itself and not part of the "Can it Run Crysis?" graphical settings in the menu.

On the bright side, this update isn't only about enhancing ray tracing. There are a lot of bug fixes with this update too, as per the developer:

  • Motion blur has been reactivated: Motion Blur was temporary disabled with 2.1.1, due to some issues where the motion blur effect was far more intense than intended. A fix has been implemented and motion blur is now available once again.
  • Improvement made to the model for the SCAR.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed players to activate Anti-Aliasing (AA) from the options menu when DLSS is turned on.
  • Developer Note: By design, AA is not supposed to work while Nvidia's DLSS is active. To increase the visibility on this, AA will now be greyed out once DLSS has been turned on.
  • Fixed a UI issue that resulted in the selected difficulty settings appearing as set to 'Easy' when another difficulty has been selected.
  • Fixed some black or random textures that could appear when ray tracing is enabled on some PCs.
  • Reduced and fixed several visible cracks that can appear in ray tracing geometry.
  • Fixed a rare crash that could occur when ray tracing has been enabled.
  • Fixed some incorrect texture tiling that could be visible when ray tracing is enabled.
  • Fixed an issue that could result in stalls when loading ray tracing textures.

  • Optimized RayTracing Screen Space Reflections performance for 4K.

The latest PC update for Crysis Remastered , Version 2.1.2, adds an " experimental " Ray Tracing Boost Mode that enables ray tracing across nearly every surface. Crytek has been working towards improving the remaster's visual quality and overall performance on all platforms since its release last year. One recent example of said improvements came via Crysis Remastered's  PS5 and Xbox Series X|S upgrade that launched a few short weeks ago.

Thanks to the free next-gen update, PlayStation and Xbox Series X players can access three different graphics/performance modes - Performance, Quality, and RayTracing - each of which targets 6o frames per second. The Series S boasts the same modes, though Performance is the only one that shoots for 60fps capabilities; the other two are locked at 30fps. While the RayTracing option gives console players a bit of a lighting and reflections boost, such enhancements will now pale in comparison to what the latest PC update brings to users on higher-end platforms .

Crysis Remastered  Version 2.1.2 went live today on PC. In a post on the franchise's subreddit, Community Manager  Ic3man2k  revealed the patch notably introduces the experimental Ray Tracing Boost Mode that adds ray-traced reflections to " nearly all surfaces in-game ." Additionally, " ray randomization " enables better support of rough surfaces. And, by default, the update coats all surfaces with about 5 percent of " specular reflectance ." A note from the developer explains that accessing this mode is only possible in the in-game Graphics settings menu when users activate the " Global Raytracing option ." Version 2.1.2 also unleashes a host of bug fixes and changes, including the return of motion blur - disabled in 2.1.1 to combat an issue with motion blur's graphical effects.

This " fun/experimental " option, as the developer's note describes it, is targeted at players who may consider themselves ray tracing enthusiasts . Admittedly, the idea of ray-traced reflections making every in-game surface shiny sounds a bit out of left field. But if any game is going to experiment with the technique in such a manner, Crysis arguably constitutes the best choice.

Crysis Remastered launched last year on consoles and PC, Nintendo Switch included. Unfortunately, the game across all platforms had more than its fair share of issues, though consoles especially suffered due to myriad graphical issues and frame rate hiccups.

Hands-On With Crysis Remastered’s New Ray Tracing Upgrade

Crytek has just released a update for Crysis Remastered , version 2.1.2, with updates to the game’s ray tracing graphics. The new update features an experimental Boost mode that pushes all the game’s ray tracing reflections to even greater levels.

Boost mode enters Crysis Remastered as a purely experimental feature, but when enabled, it adds ray-traced reflections to almost every surface in-game, adds proper support for ray randomization on rough surfaces and boost specular reflectance on all surfaces by “about 5%,” according to the announcement of the update.

Overall, Boost mode seems like a cool idea, but I’d like to see a more noticeable visual improvement if it’s to graduate past the experimental feature phase. As it stands, the ray tracing boost is barely noticeable at all when actually playing the game.

Interestingly, Crytek has been working on this boost mode for quite a while. In their announcement, the game’s developers noted that Boost mode came about during the initial development of Crysis Remastered . On the bright side, this update isn’t only about enhancing ray tracing. There are a lot of bug fixes with this update too, as per the developer:

  • Motion blur has been reactivated: Motion Blur was temporary disabled with 2.1.1, due to some issues where the motion blur effect was far more intense than intended. A fix has been implemented and motion blur is now available once again.

Crysis Remastered’s 2.1.2 update brings the game’s Ray Tracing to the Next Level

This alteration brings the game’s ray-traced visuals to the next level, allowing for proper reflections on rough surfaces and a 5% specular reflectance to all surfaces by default. This setting can only be activated when ray tracing is enabled within Crysis Remastered, for obvious reasons.

Update 2.1.2 also re-enables Motion Blur within Crysis Remastered, an option that was disabled in patch 2.1.1 due to a bug that made the effect more intense than intended. Crysis Remastered’s ray tracing performance has also been optimised for 4K resolutions, and Crytek has optimised the memory footprint of Crysis Remastered when in “RTX mode”.

With Crysis Remastered’s new Ray tracing update being labelled as “Experimental”, this new graphics option will likely be too taxing for most PC gamers. That said, future patches could increase the performance of this new game mode, and DLSS should reduce the GPU overhead caused by this option on Nvidia RTX series graphics cards.

Even though experimental, there is a new RayTracing Boost Mode in Crysis Remastered on PC, thanks to the most recent 2.1.2 update. Crytek’s latest tackle is RayTracing Boost Mode, which allows players to witness stronger RT effects by activating the feature and less impact on performance.

Crysis Remastered PC Update 2.1.2 also optimizes GPU memory usage. It allows having less impact on performance with RTX and fixes an issue that caused some SSR elements not to be revealed at a larger distance. The update also adds optimization for 4K resolution.

Crysis Remastered PC Update 2.1.2 Notes

  • Experimental RayTracing Boost mode has been added.
  • RT reflections have been enabled on nearly all surfaces in game.
  • Ray randomization has enabled for proper support of rough surfaces.
  • About 5% of specular reflectance has been added by default to all surfaces.

Developer Note:

During the development of Crysis Remastered, the team came up with the concept of adding a boost to RayTracing. This boost mode is more of a fun/experimental feature that we wanted to bring to all the RayTracing enthusiasts out there, to give more effects with minimal impact on performance. This option has been added to the in-game Graphic settings menu and can only be activated when Global Raytracing option is enabled.

  • Motion blur has been reactivated: Motion Blur was temporary disabled with 2.1.1 due to some issues where the motion blur effect was far more intense than intended. A fix has been implemented and motion blur is now available once again.
  • Improvement made to the model for the SCAR.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed players to activate Anti-Aliasing (AA) from the options menu when DLSS is turned on.
  • Developer Note: By design, AA is not supposed to work while NVIDIA’s DLSS is active. To increase the visibility on this, AA will now be greyed out once DLSS has been turned on.
  • Fixed a UI issue that resulted in the selected difficulty settings appearing as set to “Easy” when another difficulty has been selected.
  • Fixed some black or random textures that could appear when RayTracing is enabled on some PCs.
  • Reduced and fixed several visible cracks that can appear in RayTracing geometry.
  • Fixed a rare crash that could occur when Raytracing has been enabled.
  • Fixed some incorrect texture tiling that could be visible when RayTracing is enabled.
  • Fixed an issue that could result in stalls when loading RayTracing textures.
  • Optimized the GPU memory usage in RTX mode (freed around 300+ MB on GPU).
  • Fixed an issue with some light clip volumes support when RayTracing is enabled which will now allow for more precise RT shading.
  • Fixed and issue that caused RayTracing Screen Space Reflections to not be visible on distant surfaces.
  • Optimized RayTracing Screen Space Reflections performance for 4K.

This is the company that refuses to die. Hopefully they can expand their ip at some point beyond just this one property.

LazyGamer said: I'm just wondering if their IP is truly competitive; the 'Far Cry' and 'Crysis' games they did in house were pretty good for essentially being tech demos! Their real IP is their engine, and I think that that's becoming a problem for them as most larger dev houses are either rolling their own engines, or are part of a larger company that has plenty of in-house engine expertise (EA, Epic, Blizzard, Microsoft... etc.). Just not terribly sure that there are customers for what Crytek does best. Click to expand...

Crysis Remastered Performance (RTX 4090)

I recently bought Crysis Remastered Trilogy (Steam Spring Sale!) and decided to play through all of the games for the first time. However Crysis 1R seems to be having some performance issues.

RTX 4090 Suprim Liquid X (+160MHz core, +500MHz memory)

32GB RAM 3733MHz CL16

2TB NVMe (3500 MB/s read/write)

Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 (5120x1440px/240Hz)

I tried running the game on "Can it run Crysis" settings (everything enabled & maxxed out, "RT Boost mode" too) in native resolution (32:9 5120x1440px) but it seems that framerate fluctuates anywhere between 45-140fps, with dips below 60FPS happening quite often in more dynamic scenarios. DLSS set to Quality doesn't really help that much, GPU utilisation with it enabled seems to be around 80-85%, while CPU is closer to 20-30%. I tested in on the first military camp at the beginning of the game (the one with gas station upon the entrance) - went guns blazing to cause maximal chaos and destruction. Tried using built in benchmark, but it was useless with very limited amount of options and resolutions to choose from.

For reference - Crysis 3R maxed out with DLSS set to "Quality" runs closer to 140FPS, even the "tall grass scene" at the beginning of the game was running at 115+FPS.

Is it expected for C1R to run this poorly at times? Should I just ignore performance issues and just finish the game and then move on to next games in the series? Or maybe there's trick to running the game better without sacrificing visuals?

Thanks in advance for the answers :)
