Learning from the best: my father's lessons on leadership.

Some people are born leaders, exuding a natural confidence and demonstrating an innate ability to encourage and nurture those around them. Most leaders, however, learn by watching the example set forth by others. I fall into the category of “learned leader”  The charisma that often defines the natural leader has never come easily for me. Fortunately, I've had great mentors who have helped me to learn and grow, both personally and professionally. Of all the people who have provided strong examples of leadership , no one stands out more than my father.

One would be hard-pressed to find a better leader than my dad. With Father’s Day just around the corner, I thought the best tribute I could pay to the greatest leader I've ever known, would be to share the three most important lessons he taught me.

Be courageous

My father is a huge fan of Westerns, and one of his favorite John Wayne quotes is “Courage is being scared to death... and saddling up anyway.” To him, this isn’t a throwaway sentiment; it’s a way of life. My father taught me that there was a difference between courage and bravado. Courage isn’t a matter of being fearless; it’s a matter of being willing to accept the outcomes of your decisions, no matter what.

My dad started his company when he was 29 years old. He was working at an engineering firm when one of his clients, a little company called Coca-Cola , asked him to strike out on his own. They promised to come along with him if he left, but he had no formal guarantee. He had a young family at home that depended on him, but he was shrewd enough to recognize the incredible opportunity ahead of him. After weeks of agonizing and soul-searching, he made the decision to move forward on his own. He knew that there was risk involved, and he had the courage to move forward in spite of it.

I once asked him about how he became comfortable with the situation. His answer was plainspoken and simple—whether the business succeeded or failed, he would do whatever it took to provide for his family. He was willing to accept the outcome of his decision, regardless of how hard he would have to work. The prospect of jumping into the unknown still scared him to death, but he had the confidence to saddle up anyway and take on the challenge.

Fortunately, his business grew quickly and became quite successful. Before he knew it, he was the head of a reasonably large company, signing large deals and influencing the industry. This type of success would swell most egos, but my father was unaffected. He remained the straightforward and uncomplicated man he had always been. Over the years, his humility and simple tastes became a trademark of sorts.

When I was in my early twenties, I had a fair bit of success in my career and was pretty proud of myself. My father took me aside and encouraged me to remain humble.

“Everybody falls down at some point,” he told me, “stay humble so that the people around you want to help you up, not knock you back down.”

His words struck a chord with me, and suddenly his decisions to embrace simplicity made sense. His humility was genuine, and it encouraged those around him to demonstrate compassion and understanding when things got rough. In business, everyone is jockeying for position and prestige. My father taught me to take a different path. He taught through example that cultivating humility and focusing on others always pays off in the long run.

Be generous

Perhaps the most important lesson he taught me was to be generous. While running his company, he learned that a young employee on his team had tragically lost their young child to a terminal illness. The employee held a junior role inside of the organization and didn’t have much money. Worse yet, he didn’t have sufficient insurance to cover the medical costs, let alone pay for a funeral for the child.

News of this tragedy reached my father, and he quietly and privately paid for the funeral costs out of his pocket. There was no need for a company fundraiser, to him that was too opportunistic. This was not a PR stunt. A member of his team was in pain and needed help, and he responded personally. To this day, none of his colleagues know what he did. That act of generosity and compassion has remained with me over the years and served as the best example of what a leader should be.

Leadership is not about titles. It’s about bringing out the best in others and serving as an example for your team. That is often easier said than done. Fortunately for me, my father was always there to provide an example of what a leader should be: courageous, humble, and generous. I couldn’t ask for a better role model, both personally and professionally.

10 Leadership Lessons I Learned From My Father

Global Operations Manager, Equilibria

I have been working with my father for nearly 10 years. During this time I have read a variety of leadership, inspiration, self-help and business books (and some fun stuff too). Amongst one of the books that have inspired me the most lately was Arianna Huffington's Thrive. It really struck a cord, actually many cords with me. Slowly but surely, I am incorporating Third Metric principles into my life. Getting back to my father, in each one of the books I have read, there were great takeaways and lessons to be learned. However, the lessons that I have learned from my father have had the biggest impact on me and will stay with me throughout my life-long leadership journey.

Below I have summarized the 10 most memorable Leadership Lessons I Learned From My Father so far...

1. Do not assume anything. Especially that you know why people did what they did or do what they do.

2. Give people feedback. Even when it is uncomfortable, actually even more so when it is uncomfortable.

3. To build the foundation for a successful relationship (at home or at work) start with having a conversation about mutual expectations.

4. Abundance is a gift we can choose to accept and share. The act of giving physically and emotionally, without expecting anything in return, is the greatest gift of all.

5. There is no such thing as "managing people". A true leader, gives people the right tools, support, feedback and motivation to "manage" themselves.

6. If you want better than normal results you have to get the right people involved. That means embracing diversity of thought.

7. The best leaders develop and empower the people around them to be authentic leaders and are not afraid of being wrong.

8. Wasting one iota of energy worrying about anything we cannot control is equal to choosing to waste unnecessary heartbeats that we will never recuperate.

9. When you get frustrated, annoyed, disappointed or generally upset because of other people's actions or inactions, you have given them control over you. You can always exercise Personal Intervention and choose to respond instead of react.

10. If your work is just "work" for you, do everything you can to find something that feels purposeful and not just like work.

It may sound like my father and I have always had a great relationship but that could not be further from the truth. If someone had told me when I was sixteen that one of the people I would learn the most from and have the biggest impact on me as a leader and as a person was going to be my father, I would have told them they were crazy. We captured the story of our relationship transformation in our co-authored book At the End of the Day: How One Man Learned to Live Like He Was Dying . My father and I have found a renewed sense of purpose in our "work" through our involvement in E-Colors in Education www.ecolorsineducation.com .

Leading with Trust

Leadership begins with trust.

Father’s day special: five leadership lessons from being a dad.

Being a dad has been, and continues to be, one of the greatest joys of my life. I’ve experienced tremendous highs, suffered through some lows, doubted myself, learned much, and have been stretched to grow in ways I couldn’t have imagined when I first started this journey twenty years ago. The same could be said for my journey as a leader!

father leadership essay

  • There’s no substitute for time — I’ve learned that “quality” time is just a convenient rationalization to justify our busyness and to ease our guilt from not spending “quantity” time with our kids. The “quality” happens in those unexpected moments during the “quantity.” Being a leader requires spending large amounts of time with your people and not isolating yourself in your own little world. Devote yourself to investing in the growth and development of your people and you’ll reap the rewards.
  • Set clear expectations — Part of being a good dad is setting clear expectations for his kids. They should know what’s expected in terms of their behavior and attitudes, and what the consequences will be (either positive or negative) for meeting or not meeting those expectations. Your people at work need the same clear expectations regarding their performance. They need clear targets with identifiable rewards or consequences. It’s not fair to judge your people (or kids) for their actions if they weren’t clear on the goal in the first place.
  • Be the example — Being a dad means setting the right example for his kids and the same is true in being a leader. Your attitudes, the tone of voice you use in speaking to others, your work ethic, and the way you treat people are just a few of the ways you will influence your people. Just as a child will observe and often imitate every move of his dad, your people are always taking their cue from the actions of their leader. Make sure you’re leading well!
  • Have fun — It’s easy to get bogged down in all the stress and anxiety that comes with being a dad, but I’ve learned to have fun and enjoy the journey as much as possible. Leaders need to remember to take work seriously, but not take themselves too seriously. Laugh at yourself, keep the mood light, and don’t be afraid to have fun with your staff. When the stressful times come, your people will be more willing to put in the extra effort that’s necessary.
  • Validate them — One of the primary roles of a father is to validate his children. A father’s approval imparts a tremendous amount of psychological and emotional confidence in a child that empowers him to grow in confidence and faith in his own abilities. Your staff needs your approval as well. When your people know that you accept them, desire the best for them, and will do whatever you can to help them succeed, you will have their loyalty and commitment in following your lead.

Leading and managing adults at work is obviously not the same as parenting children, although some days it can certainly feel that way! However, the principles one uses to be a successful father (or mother) can be equally beneficial for success as a leader. Just like being a father, the key is being consistent in your approach and having the best interests of your people in mind.

By no means are these five principles a definitive list. I’m curious to know what lessons you’ve learned from being a parent that apply to leadership. Feel free to share your thoughts by leaving a comment. Happy Father’s Day!

Happy Fathers Day, Randy! Great principles… I think as my sons get older, realizing they need more space to succeed or fail is a principle I have had to adopt. It is about their growth and learning from their own experiences. A tough one to do, at times, but a very necessary one.

All the best to you and your family! Take care. Jon

Great point Jon. That’s been my experience as well.

Happy Father’s Day!

Sent via mobile device. Please excuse any typos.

Hi Randy, awesome family pic BTW! That’s what it’s all about in my opinion.

More and more my experiences, both personally and professionally, tell me to be open to the sponteneous positive moments that can happen if you let them. Like two weeks ago, when out of the blue, I decided to go be with my 11 year old daughter at her school as she was getting a needle. As I was leaving, she said, ‘thanks for being here for me daddy’. Those are the experiences that provide me with positive energy. That same positive energy can (and does) happen in the work place, if we can open ourselves up and allow it to happen. Hope I’m making sense, hard to put into words!

Take care, have a great week.

Hi Murray! Your comments make perfect sense and I agree with you. Being intentional about carving out the time to allow those special moments to happen is what I’m working on.

The Biggest Leadership Lesson Learnt From My Father

Father and son

Fathers are critical to the leadership success of their children. According to leadership guru George Kohlrieser , both boys and girls learn leadership from their father. Hence, we can conclude that fathers play a very critical role in building leadership skills, both in boys and girls. In fact, according to research ,

Fathers who care for, nurture, and play with their babies raise children with higher IQs and with better language and cognitive skills. New research shows that fathers may have an even greater impact on children’s language development than mothers. The more time fathers spend in enriching, stimulating play with their child—such as playing pretend or sharing stories—the better the child’s math and reading scores are at 10 and 11 years old

As Father’s Day draws near, I started to think about some leadership lessons I learnt from my father. My father had such an important and profound effect on who I am today. There were so many insights on leadership learnt while growing up. However, I think one lesson which my father consistently reinforced through his action and his own life is this: Everyone can become a leader. As a young boy growing up, I would see my father urge many folks to take up leadership positions, even though they would protest and declare their inability to be a leader. Yet, my father would consistently urge and encourage them on and ultimately, they would prove him right. And I began to believe that everyone was cut out to be a leader.   Read also : The Science Of Building Leaders: Part 1   and  The Science Of Building Leaders: Part 2

Are you made to be a leader?

Whenever I’m involved in discussions on leadership, occasionally a voice from the audience will pop up and declare:

“I’m not made to be a leader; it’s not for me.”

In most cases, these voices belong to those who place leadership on a very high pedestal. They will look at past and present great leaders and believe that they’re not at all like those iconic figures. Because of this, they are convinced that they’re not made to be a leader. As I learnt from my father, nothing could be further from the truth. The question of what it means to be a leader is still a hot topic and with academic research offering over 350 definitions of ‘leadership’, there’s at least one thing about it that we know for sure: there is no single way, no magic formula that transforms someone into a leader. Just like travelling, there are many ways to reach any destination.

A reserved leader

I recall one conversation with someone who liked the idea of “ becoming a leader one day ”, but who felt that they were too quiet and reserved to be one. As my father used to urge others on, I decided to urge him along by mentioning the achievements of people such as Abraham Lincoln, Eleanor Roosevelt, Albert Einstein,  Bill Gate s , Larry Page, Steve Wozniak, and  Elon Musk . Energetic extroverts are hardly a phrase to describe any of these leaders. Although we laud these names today, none of them started off as greats, and none of them had it in mind to become great leaders. As I chatted back and forth with this reluctant leader, it struck me that there’s a problem with how leadership and success are presented. Oftentimes, we talk about leadership and success as though they are qualities that should be fully attained almost immediately. So it’s not that people don’t believe that leadership can’t be nurtured, rather they believe that a leader is something that you have to be now before the quality is then nurtured and refined.

Everyone can be a leader

Here’s the twist:

everyone  has it in them to be a leader.

Okay, I can hear you thinking, “ But I’m nothing like Lincoln or Roosevelt or an MLK* ”. Neither were they to begin with. And while greatness is a fine thing to acquire if your passion and perseverance lead you there, leadership isn’t necessarily about being an epoch-defining icon. (*MLK- in case you didn’t get that reference, it’s short for Martin Luther King) In the majority of cases, leadership is about impacting the lives of those who will go on – or inspire others to go on – to make great things happen. Leadership is primarily about having clarity of goals, clarity of where we are today in relation to that goal and finally influencing others in positive ways that enable everyone to achieve those goals. As my father showed me early in life, leadership is truly about influence that creates a ripple effect.

Key characteristics related to leadership

How can you tell that you already possess qualities that are associated with leadership? Well, there are a few signs that show your inherent leadership potential. The following list is by no means exhaustive:

  • You’ve coached someone in a particular skill or practice.
  • You’ve given advice to someone about their personal or professional lives.
  • You’ve empowered someone to realise their own potential.
  • You take time to listen to people and are interested in what they have to say.
  • You’ve looked at a process or practice, thought that it could be done better, and looked for ways to improve how things are done.
  • You’re invested in relationships and often look for ways in which you can be of service to others.
  • You take time to reflect on how you interact with others and whether there are ways in which you can enhance those interactions.
  • You are passionate about a cause or a mission.
  • You’re inclined towards supporting and serving others, but don’t think you have it in you to be a leader (in other words, you’re modest and humble).

If you recognise yourself as being associated with one or more of the above, guess what? You’ve already shown yourself to be a leader. Yes, I hear you again… Let’s sprinkle a little salt on the sugar. Just because you’re a leader doesn’t automatically make you a  great  leader, or even a  good  one. Just as there are lousy car mechanics or accountants, there are surely lousy leaders out there. (and in Malaysia, where I am currently residing, we can definitely identify a ton of "useless" political leaders!) But – (you knew that was coming) – that’s where leadership development and learning comes into play. Everyone has it in them to be a good (and even a great) leader, because everyone has leadership potential. However, just like any other quality, it needs to be cultivated, nurtured and refined.

Nurturing your leadership potential

Whether you are quiet and reserved or loud and flamboyant is irrelevant – these traits don’t affect the quality of your leadership potential. What does affect your potential is how you nurture what you already have within you, and how you can see yourself serving others in the best way you know how. Of course, I haven’t forgot your final caveat, so let me answer that now: the best leaders are also followers – the two are not mutually exclusive. Abraham Lincoln was a master at knowing when to lead and when to seek direction, and Elon Musk doesn’t have an army of smart people around him for no reason. So, if everyone became good or great leaders, it wouldn’t mean that there’d be no followers.   This podcast might interest you: Raise Your Game: Abraham Lincoln “From Failed Leader To Great President”

Baby Roshan with his father, mum and little sister. His father had a significant impact on his life and leadership

Final thoughts

My father showed me clearly that leadership is primarily about influencing others in positive ways: it doesn’t necessarily refer to marching out in front holding up the banner. In fact, many great leaders today are those who are quietly influencing others without much fanfare at all. And that was the greatest gift I received from my father – knowing that everyone can and should work tirelessly to become great leaders.

As a father himself, Roshan wishes all fathers a blessed and Happy Father’s Day. Being a father is never an easy task, but it makes a huge difference to the lives of your children, so keep working on it. Just like leadership, everyone can be a great father.

I’m a CEO and a Working Dad. Here’s What I Wish I Did Differently.

father leadership essay

Summary .

While employers are increasingly offering paid paternity leave benefits, most new dads take less time than they are allowed, and 70 percent of those who do take leave return to work in 10 days or fewer. Why? A large part of the problem is culture, which leaves most fathers feeling unsupported by leadership in their decision to take paternity leave. Simply providing benefits isn’t enough — leaders and managers must commit to fostering a dad-friendly work culture. They must be cognizant of the attitudes and behaviors that create a stressful culture for working parents. They should be vulnerable, honest, and empathetic about their own lives as working parents. Most of all they should model that they too use paternity leave, backup care, and flexible work schedules. Organizations that commit to a dad-friendly culture will see positive halo effects that benefit working mothers, further gender equality, and improve retention.

The day my twin sons were born was the happiest of my life. There is one thing I regret, though: the conference call I was wrapping up with my executive team as I raced through the hospital doors.

5 Lessons I Learned From My Father -- for Business and for Life I named my wine business after him, because without him there would be no business.

By Joseph Carr Edited by Dan Bova Jun 19, 2016

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

This article originally published June 19, 2015.

As I was coming up with ideas for my new wine brand, my mother had suggested I call it "Josh" -- my father's nickname. Although she was half joking, I loved the idea because the name embodied everything the wine stood for; it was bold and complex, yet approachable, just like dad. Although my father never got to see my dreams come to a reality, his support and advice played an important role in the success of my business today.

Much of my passion and drive stems from the life and business lessons I learned from my father, but there were 5 distinct pillars which have influenced my life.

1. Teach by example.

I learned at a very early age that you can tell people what to do until you are blue in the face, but you have to set the tone with your actions. People will not only respect that, they will rise to it. My dad was the first one on the job, and the last one to leave. If there was a tough job to be done, he made sure that he was the first one to volunteer and pitch in to help.

2. Be on time.

My dad emphasized it almost daily and taught me that it's a sign of respect for other people and of their time. One time I was running behind to meet a client and arrived 20 minutes late. The meeting went well, but I didn't walk away with what I thought was going to be a done deal. What I later found out was that this client had chosen to meet me and miss his son's baseball game. It took years to win him back and many appointments, arriving 30 minutes early, to show him the respect he deserved.

3. Don't make a tough decision based upon emotions.

It's easy to get upset and clear the deck. It's harder to step back, take a breath and look at the situation again. I once had a troubling negotiation with a grower over a grape contract when I was producing a varietal of wine. He asked for too much money and I was angry and ready to walk away. It was then I realized he was a man of pride, and remembered my dad telling me to sit on a problem for a while before figuring out how to resolve it. I set the financials aside for a brief moment and reflected on the situation as a long term relationship I would need to nurture, and we finally settled on a price we both agreed upon.

4.Tell a good story.

When building a brand, people are interested in the person behind that brand not just what the business is about or selling. My father spent a great deal of time sitting around a kitchen table telling stories and listening to others – the topics always varied: politics, the weather, family issues, etc. By doing this, the people my father was working with felt that he was a caring and authentic person and if he was like that in his personal life, it was how he would be in business as well.

5. Balance your life.

If you don't have balance in both your business and personal life, you will be empty. A few years ago, I was at the top of my game, making great money, and traveling the world. I came home one day, and my dog, Max, just kept barking at me. I realized that if Max was missing me that much, then surely my wife and daughter were too. I cut back my schedule and started to balance work and life better, putting my family first. That's when the real success came to be.

I'm so grateful for my dad who showed me the amount of hard work and passion that a business requires. Although I can't share my successes with my father today, it doesn't mean that I don't thank him every day for the gifts he has given me. As I sit here now, opening a bottle of Josh Cellars, I raise a glass and toast to the man that I call my hero.

Introduction:

My father is my hero and guide in my life. He is the one I look upon whenever I find myself in trouble. My father has been my guiding force for all my major decisions in life. In fact, I have never regretted adhering to his advice as it has always worked for me. He is a hardworking and passionate person. My father has a love for movies. Whenever he gets time, he just loves to watch an old movie. In fact, at times we just fight as to who gets control of the television. But at heart, we love to tease each other and play as well.

My father does not like to sit idle. At times, on holidays if he finds me and my sister doing nothing and just idling our time, he gives us some task or the other. He is also much organised and keeps all his documents in a properly organised manner.

My Father – My Role Model:

My father is my role model for many reasons. First and foremost I admire his passion for work. That is why he is so respected in his office as well. He is always there to help his colleagues even if it is not his work. In fact, one can always see him spending weekends helping others out. Moreover, my father is a simple man. He does not like expensive things and lives an easy and peaceful life. Also, he never shouts on anyone of us. I wonder if he ever gets angry on anything as he takes everything so calmly and takes his time to decide upon things.

My Father – My Friend:

My father is my friend as well. I can discuss everything with my father, even those that I dare not speak in front of my mother. I know that he shall keep it a secret and give the advice I need. He is the one whom I can rely upon blindly during any hour of need, and I know that he shall be there for me.

Importance of My Father in My Life:

My father plays an important role in the family. He is in fact considered as the head of the family. However, I feel that both father and mother have a distinctive role to play in bringing up their children. While on hand my mother has s soft heart, it is my father who shows courage and strength which his children will later on imbibe as their qualities. He can be firm at times, but be rest assured it is always for the benefit of the children.

Conclusion:

There is no doubt that my father’s role is vital in my life. His presence is vital for maintaining the balance and peace in my family. A father is the one who earns the badge of the stricter parent and whose denial of permission for anything means a lot to the children. I also admire my father and try to imbibe his qualities so that I become like him when I grow up.

My father is a person who takes care of my family and loves each one of us dearly. My father acts as the pillar of support and strength for my family.

My father is the person that I admire the most in my life. I can never forget all the childhood memories that I have with him. It is safe for me to say that my father is largely the reason behind my present joy and happiness. I can say that I am the person who I am today and the person that I am growing to be, is all because of the influence he has had and is having on me. He always makes time to play with me and catch up on all the happenings in my life even after the hard work of the day.

My father is one man who is very unique and different. I always feel lucky anytime I remember that he is my father knowing how he has done the very best for me in life. I always feel grateful that I have the opportunity to be his son and be a part of a wonderful family that has a great father like him. My father has shown himself to be a very peaceful and polite person. He seldom scolds me and he is always easy with me. What he tries to do is that he makes sure that I realise the mistake that I have made in a very polite way and helps me to get better and this has been working like magic for many years now.

My father is the leader and head of our family. He is always there for every member of the family to help us in times when we need his advice and direction in taking decisions. Anytime we have a problem, we take it to him, he tries to help us by sharing some of the problems that he also faced in the past that are quite similar to our problem and how he was able to overcome them. He also shares all of his achievements and drawbacks in life and tells us to learn from them.

My father has his personal online marketing business but he never insists any of his children to pursue a career in that same field so that we can take over after him. He does not even try to attract any of us to his business but he tries to teach how we can discover our own passion and fields of interest in life. He does his best to encourage us in the pursuance of our various dreams. I can boldly say that my dad is a very good dad and this is not as a result of him always helping me and being nice to me but because he shows great strength, knowledge, a good helping and nice nature. He also owns very good human relations skills.

My father’s parents were very poor when he was growing up but with hard work and patience, my father was able to become very rich. He uses this as an example to encourage me to always work hard.

I share all of my happy, sad and bad moments with him and he also does the same. He is always around to share with me all of his life experiences and how I can learn from them. My father also tells me all about his day and every event that occurred during the day. He is doing all his best to ensure that I grow up to become a very successful person that has good character and behaviour.

My father always teaches me ethics, humanity and etiquettes of life that can help me in future. My father is always ready and willing to help the people who are needy around us and he tells us that giving is the most important thing in life. My father also teaches my siblings and me how to be happy, healthy and fit throughout our lives.

My father has shown himself to be very good to all the members of my extended family. If anyone of us is facing a particular problem, my father is usually the first person we go to for advice and help. My father has over the years proven to be a person who has a very kind heart and I can boldly say that he is my best friend and my hero.

About My Father:

Appa was born in Coimbatore, the second son and third child in a family of 11 children. His father, my grandfather was a stern man, a respected civil engineer who worked for the colonial British government.

Appa attended the Rishi Valley School in Yercaud, founded on the learning philosophy of Jiddu Krishnamurthy. There he learned the value of discipline, respect for hard work, honesty, responsibility and constant learning. He studied electrical engineering at Banaras Hindu University and went on to join Voltas Limited’s air conditioning division. He worked there the rest of his life, and was regarded as brilliant and a genius.

My childhood memories of him are as a stern, strict and not very communicative man. He’d crack the most unhumorous Dad jokes and we’d all grimace and laugh dutifully.

He felt a deep and abiding sense of responsibility towards his own family of birth as well as his marital family. The modest salary he always earned would be divided between these two families, and since he was terrible at currying favour or promoting himself, he never rose within the ranks of Voltas and his income remained quite pathetic till he died. This officially made us a lower-middle class family and our childhoods were frugal, thrifty and austere. A little money meant a lot.

Despite these constraints, Appa planned our futures successfully. When his provident funds were released after his retirement, he used the entire amount, augmented by a bank loan, to buy a house in his two sons’ names. For the rest of our lives, we had a roof over our heads.

Why I like my father:

One of the most remarkable things about Appa was the number of things he was interested in. In Calcutta, he would spend hours outside a tailor’s shop watching him make clothes. After several months, he bought himself a Singer sewing machine. From then, all our clothes, including winter school uniforms, were stitched by him.

He taught himself carpentry — and constructed the sofa sets we used for decades.

He learned dry cleaning — and from then, we would go to school smelling of kerosene in winter.

He was an outstanding cook, and loved cooking. When my mother was immobilized with lymphatic TB, he’d cook breakfast, lunch and dinner for the family in the morning before leaving for work.

Best of all, he was a brilliant musician, gifted in playing the vichitra veena. He had his own Carnatic ‘band’ with a flutist and a mridangam player.

Things I Learned from My Father:

I have slowly realised how much of who I am was shaped by who he was. Like him, I never get bored, and remain fascinated by everything in life. I’m constantly active doing something constructive or educational. I am today two years younger than he was when he died but have started learning to play piano, understand search engine optimisation, UX design and painting.

I learned from him that generosity is a state of mind, not a state of wallet. The number of nameless, faceless poor people he had helped was long, as we learned only after he died. Never demeaning his beneficiaries with a handout, he invited them to repay at their time and speed, but made sure that they did, thus restoring their self-respect.

Without ever speaking about it, he has shown me what it means to be a father, and the meaning of selfless living.

A single incident sums up my relationship with my dad. He wanted me to join the IIT and become an engineer. I wanted to be a writer, a profession he disdained as having no future. Headstrong, in 1969, I stepped out of the train in which my family was relocating from Delhi to Bombay just as the whistle blew. I was bent on living my life my way.

My father, deeply upset, cut me off without a paisa, saying I could jolly well support myself if I was so confident about writing. And so I did, earning enough through writing for the evening papers to pay my rent, college fees and food. Six months later, my father, passing through Delhi in December, visited me to check how his strong-headed son was doing, and saw for himself that I was surviving well enough without borrowing or begging. He visibly swelled with pride.

He hugged me, in one action forgiving me but also forgiving himself. He used the 400 rupees he had received as a Christmas bonus to buy me utensils, a mattress, and other basics.

From that day, he would proudly say, “My son followed his heart rather than my head — and see what a fine job he has done.”

Essays on Leadership for Students | 200 - 500 Word Essays

Are you writing an essay about leadership? Check out these examples!

Leadership is often defined as "the action of inspiring others to act in concert to achieve a particular goal." It signifies the harmony in actions that lead to a common objective. A genuine leader not only exudes confidence but also paves the way for their followers towards triumph. Over the years, various leadership styles have been identified and discussed by psychologists.

Qualities such as intelligence, adaptability, extroversion, innate self-awareness, and social competence often emerge as the hallmarks of impactful leaders. There's a consensus that these traits mold an individual into an effective leader. Interestingly, some theories suggest that extraordinary situations can thrust an ordinary individual into the spotlight, bestowing upon them the mantle of leadership. It's also believed that leadership isn't a static trait but an evolving journey. It underscores the belief that with dedication and the right resources, anyone can hone their leadership abilities.

True leadership goes beyond merely advocating for a cause. It involves taking responsibility, igniting motivation in others, and differentiating oneself from just being a 'boss'. A leader's essence lies in their ability to inspire and propel people towards grand visions, whereas a manager typically focuses on oversight and operational aspects.

A leadership essay falls under the category of student application essays and serves to provide student admissions officers with insight into your past leadership experiences. In this article, we'll also delve into various leadership essay examples to offer a clearer understanding of the genre and inspire your writing journey.

4 Examples of Leadership Essays

Qualities of a good leader, introduction.

Confidence is the most important attribute first of all. One of the most important qualities in a leader is confidence in one's own abilities. A lack of self-assurance is fatal to a person's leadership potential. If you want others to follow you, you need to exude self-assurance. It's imperative for a leader to have faith in his own judgment and actions. How can people want to follow him if he doesn't even know what he's doing?

Every effective leader knows that they need to be an inspiration to their followers. A leader needs to set an example for his team. In addition, he ought to inspire them whenever feasible. A leader must also maintain optimism in trying times.

What qualities a good leader must have?

Leadership is the ability to influence and guide individuals or groups toward a common goal. A leader must possess several qualities to be effective, including:

Communication skills: A leader must be able to communicate their vision and goals clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing. This requires excellent listening skills, empathy, and the ability to adapt to different communication styles.

Emotional intelligence: A leader must be able to understand and manage their own emotions, as well as those of their team members. This includes being able to understand and respond to the emotions of others, and handling conflicts in a constructive manner.

Visionary: A leader must have a clear and inspiring vision of the future, and be able to articulate this vision in a way that motivates others to work towards it.

Strategic thinking: A leader must be able to think critically and creatively to identify and solve problems, make decisions, and develop plans and strategies to achieve their goals.

Flexibility: A leader must be able to adapt to changing circumstances and be open to new ideas and perspectives. This requires the ability to embrace change, be innovative, and continuously learn and grow.

Integrity: A leader must have strong ethics and values, and be willing to make difficult decisions that are consistent with their beliefs. This requires honesty, transparency, and accountability.

Decisiveness: A leader must be able to make tough decisions quickly, without undue hesitation or procrastination. This requires courage and the ability to take calculated risks.

Empowerment: A leader must be able to delegate responsibilities, give team members the resources they need to succeed, and foster a sense of ownership and accountability among their team.

Conclusion

These qualities are essential for effective leadership, and when combined with hard work, determination, and a commitment to excellence, can help leaders to achieve great things.

How one can be a Great Leader?

Leadership is the act of performing the duties of a leader. In the business world, for instance, it is essential to have someone in charge of a team to ensure everything runs well. Effective leadership is essential for any group that wants to maximize its prospects of success.

Leadership Comes from Experience

As we've shown, leadership can be innate in some cases but is more often learned through practice and exposure. Sometimes the best traits of a leader must be learned over a lengthy period of time, so that one can become a notable one, proving that leadership is not always about a person's innate qualities. Leaders should continuously be on the lookout for opportunities to grow their leadership skills.

Nobody can disagree that experience is a key component of leadership. Numerous examples exist to back up this claim, such as:

Instance 1:

Our school's head boy or girl has traditionally been an older student who has been around for a while and thus has a better grasp of the ins and outs of school politics.

Instance 2:

When there is a vacancy for a team leader, it is common practice for the employee who has consistently put in the most effort and attention to the office job to receive a higher number of votes than their coworkers.

“The best teacher for a leader is evaluated experience.” - John C. Maxwell

How one can be a Great Leader/Skills to be a Great Leader?

Effective leadership is a skill that develops through time. Developing into a leader with all the qualities that are needed takes a lot of hard work and potential. Being a prominent leader calls for a wide variety of traits. Some of these characteristics are addressed in further detail below:

One should be a Good Communicator

To be an effective leader, one must be able to convey his thoughts clearly to his/her/its subordinates.

Should have Confidence

The individual should have faith in what he says and does.

Give Credit to other Team Members too

A leader not only needs to impose his viewpoints and opinions instead he must also hear to the suggestions of other members of the team and offer them credit if their concept is appropriate.

Good Bond with the Team

A leader's ability to command respect from his team members depends on his ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with them.

Leads with Responsibility

A leader needs to be completely committed to his position. It's important that he takes on responsibility so that he can effectively deal with the various challenges he will inevitably face.

Any group or organization needs a leader above all else. Leadership development takes time and effort. One needs to have lived through a lot to be an effective leader. It's not enough to simply have years of experience in the field; one must also have the traits that make one an effective leader. You can't be a great leader unless you possess certain traits.

What makes a Good Leader?

Trying one's hand as a leader appears easy when viewed through this lens. Is that so tough? Of course not; leading is difficult, and not everyone aspires to be a leader. The vast majority of us have settled into well-established careers where we report to superiors and make a living. Still, not everyone is content to go along with the crowd. They become leaders in whatever field they pursue. A leader is an example to followers and will prioritize the needs of those around them.

Some Unique Qualities of a Leader

Many individuals resort to their leaders to vent their frustrations, therefore it's important for them to be good listeners.

A leader ought to be completely forthright; they can't play favorites or give anyone preferential treatment. One of the most essential qualities of a strong leader is the ability to make decisions with integrity.

They need to be aware of the bigger picture and understand what makes an individual stand out or become a leader. It's their expertise in addition to other distinguishing traits. Their awareness of current events and the results of recent studies is essential. In many ways, this is helpful, and it's the leader's responsibility to stay current.

Since some might not understand them, they should utilize straightforward, easily comprehended language. Leaders need to be able to communicate effectively at all times. In reality, what sets them apart is their exceptional communication skills. Adolf Hitler was such a gifted orator that his followers believed every word he said.

No matter how you're feeling or what's going on in the world, if you listen to a leader, they may make you feel energized. Since leaders are in charge of inspiring confidence in their followers, they can't afford to be wary or unsure of themselves. People tend to blindly follow their leaders.

Whether you're a leader or a doctor, you should devote yourself completely to your chosen field. Everything we do is for the benefit of others; engineers, for example, spend much of their time designing and constructing buildings for other people. So, take pride in what you do, and if you possess the aforementioned traits, you are also a leader who doesn't have to rely on others to succeed. No matter what you do, aspiring to leadership positions will always benefit others.

What is Leadership in Management and what are the weaknesses and strengths of a Leader?

Simply said, leadership is acting as a supervisor or manager of a group. Different mental pictures pop up when we hear the word "leadership" used in conversation. One might think of a political leader, team leader, corporate leader, school leader, etc. Leaders facilitate order and efficiency in the workplace. Teamwork and success are fundamental to effective leadership. Leaders utilize their managerial abilities to establish courses and guide their teams to success.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Leadership

Able to express oneself more clearly

Growth of character.

Self-awareness.

Possession of teamwork skills.

Gain assurance in yourself.

Weaknesses:

Acting favorably toward one's teammates.

Having no faith in the leader.

Thinks they're better than everyone else, but act hypocritically.

Not living up to the promised standard.

Insufficient morals.

Leadership and Management

Management and leadership are inextricably linked to one another. Leadership and management are both vital to the efficient operation of an organization; but, they accomplish very different things in the process. Leadership is a necessary skill for anyone aspiring to be an effective manager. The terms management and leadership are synonymous with one another. In this manner, we are able to draw the conclusion that a manager who demonstrates the traits of a successful leader is, in fact, a manager who is effective.

Leadership in School

Leadership is essential in nearly every group, as we've seen above. That group includes one's educational institution. Every school needs an outstanding figure to serve as its head of school. Class monitor, assembly captain, cultural leader, etc. are all examples of leadership roles that can be taken on at school, but this raises the question of what makes a person a successful school leader.

Any student hoping to be chosen as a student body leader will need to demonstrate a wide range of competencies. He or she needs to be a consistent student who pays attention in class and does well in extracurricular activities. For the simple reason that no intelligent and hardworking kid would ever be considered for leadership. Student leaders are most often selected from among those who participate fully in all activities.

Leadership in Organization

Leadership in an organization, also known as organizational leadership, is the process of establishing long-term objectives that further the company's mission and help it reach its ultimate destination. This is a classic illustration of how Bill Gates often works with his team: they agree on a strategy, and Gates implements it. To the same extent, it is the responsibility of the leader in each given organization to determine what it is that the group is trying to accomplish.

Leadership in Politics

Leadership in politics, also known as political leadership, is the process of becoming actively involved in a political party in the role of a party leader. Knowledge of political processes, their outcomes, and the political agenda is central to the idea of political leadership.

An effective leader can be developed in anyone who has the determination and drives to do so. Both the strengths and the areas for improvement should be nurtured. Whether in the classroom, the workplace, or the political arena, leadership is always necessary. Therefore, one can exercise leadership anywhere they like inside their own organization.

What are the types of Leadership?

The ability to lead is a rare trait that not everyone possesses. The ability to do so is a gift, so count your blessings if you possess it. It's recommended that you hone it even more so that you can propel your career forward and serve as an example to people around you. However, it is crucial to grasp the various leadership styles before you go ahead and polish your skills.

Types of Leadership Styles

Democratic Leadership

In this style of management, subordinates are given a voice in decision-making. Although the subordinates' efforts are highlighted, the leader is ultimately held responsible for the group's actions. Many people find this type of leadership to be effective.

Transformational Leadership

Transformational leaders motivate and inspire others to adopt new behaviors and ways of thinking in order to improve their own performance and that of their teams and organizations. A transformational leader is someone who encourages their team to strive for greater things and works to boost morale and output.

Team Leadership

A good leader fully incorporates his team into the task at hand. Members of the team are motivated to reach their goals and advance in their careers thanks to the leadership of the group.

Strategic Leadership

Autocratic Leadership

The leader in a command and control structure is the center of attention. The chief executive has absolute power in this setting. He decides things on his own, without polling his staff. He relays this information to his staff and stresses the importance of swift action. The buck stops with him, and he alone must answer for his actions. Not much room for negotiation exists. It's no secret that this method of leading has its detractors.

Visionary Leadership

This kind of leader appreciates the abilities and requirements of his team members. He describes his ideal outcome and the teamwork that will be necessary to attain it.

Coaching Leadership

Leaders who coach their teams do so regularly in an effort to raise output. He inspires his employees to do better and works to keep them motivated. This approach to leadership has been much praised.

Facilitative Leadership

With occasional guidance, a facilitative leader ensures that the process runs smoothly for his team. As a precaution in case his team is ineffective. If the team is highly effective, the leader will take a hands-off approach.

Cross-Cultural Leadership

The leadership of this type is necessary when interacting with people from various cultural backgrounds. Because of the wide variety of cultures represented in the workforce across the United States, many managers and executives hold cross-cultural positions.

Laissez-Faire Leadership

The members of the team are given responsibility in this style of management. They are free to choose how they spend their time at work, with minimal oversight from the boss. It's not a good way to lead, according to experts.

Transactional Leadership

An interactive approach is integral to this kind of leadership. When team members successfully implement their leader's ideas and choices, they are rewarded with immediate, material benefits.

Charismatic Leadership

In order to bring out the best in his followers, this kind of leader makes the effort to change their attitudes, values, and actions.

This article should dispel the notion that leadership qualities can't be further subdivided. It should also assist you in pinpointing your own personal brand of leadership so you can perfect it over time.

Final Words

In conclusion, leadership is a complex and multifaceted concept that involves various qualities and skills. Effective leaders possess traits such as integrity, vision, empathy, decisiveness, and the ability to inspire and motivate others. They are able to navigate challenges, make difficult decisions, and lead their team toward success. Leadership also involves continuous learning and self-improvement, as leaders must adapt to changing circumstances and remain relevant. Effective leadership can have a positive impact on both individuals and organizations, fostering growth and creating a culture of success.

Leadership Essay

27 August, 2020

12 minutes read

Author:  Richard Pircher

As a college student, you must write essays on a regular basis since the latter is one of the most common types of home assignments. All this means is that in order to get good grades and be successful with writing the papers, you need to have a sound understanding of the structure. Additionally, what you should never neglect is the variety of essay types. Indeed, your essay will significantly differ from one type to another: description essay will most likely have a structure that is slightly different from an argumentative one.

Leadership Essays

What you may have already encountered in your academic life is the work on a leadership essay. Although it sounds pretty complicated and vague, it is mostly possible to master an essay on leadership. Below is a guide for you to get an insight into this particular essay type.

What is a good leadership essay?

A good leadership essay is the one in which the essay writer has fully covered the topic of leadership and understood its core ideas. More specifically, to end up with a flawless leadership essay, you will need to indicate what makes a person a good leader. For achieving the latter, you will most likely need to conduct research and trace how a particular person reaches his or her goals. In other words, the task is to discover which actions the person undertakes, what their followers say about him or her, and how the person organizes the work. So, a leadership essay implies providing real-life success examples and further revealing them.

Above all, a good leadership essay is the one that follows a precise, clear, comprehensive structure. Structuring your essay about leadership in the most coherent way leads to a win-win situation: you have fewer troubles and barriers to writing a brilliant essay, and your teacher is able to comprehend the essay easily. This guide is what you will need to refer to to get an insight into how the flawless structure for a leadership essay looks like and how it will let you take a benefit.

How to write a Leadership essay?

To write a leadership essay that stands out, you first need to brainstorm all the ideas that you have and come up with a topic for your essay. If you are struggling with this step, you may think of some of the most influential people, read about them, and find out what makes them unique. Or, you can pick any topic which is mentioned at the end of this article. After you have chosen an issue, it is time to structure your essay appropriately.

how to write a leadership essay example

As you already know, an essay constitutes three essential sections: introduction, main body, and conclusion. Below is the more detailed description of each of the parts.

Introduction

Of course, your leadership essay introduction will always vary depending on the topic of the essay. However, you can always begin by stating your vision of leadership regardless of the topic. Additionally, to motivate the reader and instantly catch his or her attention, you may use a quote of a famous leader, or simply a quote which you find relevant to the topic. Be aware that you should avoid outlining the essence and the role of the leadership in your introduction; leave it for the body paragraphs.

What you may also do in your leadership essay is ask a question, which will most likely intrigue the leader. Or it will at least give your reader an overview of what you will dwell on  in your essay.

Body Paragraphs

You will need to divide the main body into 3-5 paragraphs to make the structure more comprehensive. What you have to do at this point  is  give your reader a sound understanding of your ideas. Therefore, try to fit each idea in a single body paragraph so that you do not confuse your reader. Do not hesitate to indicate your examples to strengthen your arguments. For instance, you may explain a fact that makes a particular person you are writing about a real leader.

Also, always stick to your thesis statement and don’t forget that the body paragraphs should reveal the parts of your thesis statement.

As you may already know, you need to restate your opinion and briefly summarize all the points from the main body in conclusion. For instance, if you wrote your essay on qualities of an effective leader, state the most fundamental qualities and indicate why they matter the most. Besides, try not to copy what you have already written in the body – it is better to restate your opinion using different words. And, of course, beware adding any new and extra information; indicate only those points that you have already outlined in the text. Finally, keep in mind that it is always favorable to keep your concluding remarks short.

Leadership Essay Examples

Writing a leadership essay requires some research and time. In case you feel the necessity to go through an essay example, below is a leadership essay sample you can refer to.

Is leadership an inborn or an acquired feature?

Is everyone capable of becoming a leader, or is this ability innate? A lot of researchers have been struggling to answer this question. One assumption about leadership implies that the leader is the person who possesses particular characteristics. Another assumption claims that leaders are capable of acquiring specific features over their life span. As the evidence shows, leaders own many features that distinguish them among others and make more and more people become their followers. These might be cognitive abilities, psychological traits, professional qualities, and a lot more, and all of them will be either acquired or innate. Based on the importance of leadership qualities, such as commitment, stress resistance, and the ability to make quality decisions, it is reasonable to claim that leaders are made, not born.

One can deem commitment as one of the top fundamental qualities of the leader. In essence, such a feature indicates that a person is passionate about the common goal, strives to be a team player, and makes every effort to reach a shared goal. As the history shows, none of the successful companies was uncoordinated by an influential, committed leader: Apple, Amazon, Microsoft – all of these companies are examples of dominant teams led by a dedicated leader. A committed leader also inspires his or her team to achieve common goals and put more effort into the shared activity. Besides, commitment is unlikely to be an innate feature; it instead comes with experience. This is so, since commitment implies dedicating oneself to the shared task, and one can reach it only via learning and continuous self-improvement.

Stress resistance is another incredibly important feature that every good leader should possess. This is because only a stress-resistant leader has sufficient capabilities to overcome any complexity and not let the anxiety and stress prevent him or her from making proper decisions. Besides, such a leader will most likely have a positive influence on the team, as long as leading by example will motivate the team members to attain the same emotional stability. What is so far familiar about stress resistance as an effective leader’s feature is that it can be either innate or attained. However, although some researchers admit that emotional stability is something one is born with, it is not entirely true; many people still put a great effort into self-improvement, changing the attitude to unfortunate situations, and so on. Therefore, being resistant to stress can be mostly attributed to a personality.

An ability to make high-quality decisions most likely determines the chances for an enterprise’s success. In particular, such quality is incredibly fundamental for a company of any size and professional orientation. Additionally, it is one of the top tasks of a good leader to make final decisions. What he or she should do implies brainstorming, discussing various opinions in the group, making forecasts, analyzing all the pros and cons. However, the leader is the one to make a final decision. Thereby, he is in charge of researching the market, discovering all the hidden truths, and analyzing the organization’s potential and capabilities to result in the most effective decision. As it flows logically from the latter, an ability to make sound quality decisions is purely a professional quality. This leads to the conclusion that one has to work hard to become a genuine leader and master the skill of making effective decisions.

Overall, the leader may possess a multitude of different skills and master them perfectly. However, what has so far become transparent is that any leader, regardless of which team he leads, must possess three essential qualities. These qualities are commitment to the common goal, ability to handle and resist stress, and, finally, an ability to make effective decisions. All of the three qualities are most likely to be acquired over a lifetime. The statement below leads to the conclusion that even though some qualities can be innate, most are not the ones that leaders are born with. While writing a leadership essay, you may struggle with the subject, structure, titles, and other components. Don’t worry – these tips will help you to write the best leadership paper!

Tip 1. Choose your subject area first. If your professor did not provide specific topics, you would need to select one on your own. In order to do this, you may focus on an area of leadership that sounds interesting to you.

For example, if you consider working in the hospitality sector in the future, write about leadership in hotels or restaurants. Alternatively, you can browse leadership essay topics online and see if that gives you any clarity.

Tip 2. Narrow down the topic. To ensure that your essay earns high marks, you should avoid choosing an area of leadership that is too broad.

A college level paper should offer enough details and depth to receive an excellent grade. For instance, instead of overviewing a bunch of leadership styles, focus on how certain styles impede or facilitate teamwork. This will give you enough to talk about while limiting the scope of your essay.

Tip 3. Don’t confuse leadership with management! This is a common mistake that students make while writing leadership essays. Although the two concepts overlap, leadership is more about beliefs and vision, whereas managerial work is focused on specific tools and techniques.

Thus, a leader may or may not be a manager. To get more familiar with the subject of leadership, research various leadership styles, such as transformational, autocratic, and servant leadership.

Tip 4. Pay attention to the structure. In a great essay, ideas are always well-organized and follow one another in a logical sequence. First, write an introduction where you present your topic and thesis.

Then, write the main body, where you explain the key concepts and the relationships between them by reviewing relevant research evidence.

Lastly, write a conclusion summarizing your key points. A good leadership essay conclusion should also show how the information can be applied in practice.

Tip 5. Seek to answer any questions that readers might have. For your essay to show excellent depth, you need to address the points that might be interesting to readers in connection with your subject area.

For example, if you are reviewing a particular leadership style, you might want to discuss in which settings it would be useful and what are some of its limitations.

To make this part easier, you could search for leadership essay questions online to clarify what kind of answers readers expect you to cover.

Tip 6. Explain the importance and relevance of your paper. Because leadership is focused on effective strategies that can be applied in real life, you need to provide examples of how your essay may be used to support future practice and research.

Can leaders use the information you provided to improve their relationships with other employees? Can the proposed strategies influence performance?

Think about the potential uses of your research, as well as any gaps that are yet to be studied. Highlighting areas for future research will show your tutor that you are genuinely interested in the subject while also helping you plan for future essays.

We hope that these leadership essay tips will make it easier for you to write an outstanding paper! Make sure to check our website for sample essays on leadership!

A 42-year-old Chinese heiress known as the ‘princess of Wahaha’ takes over father’s beverage empire

Kelly Zong Fuli

Chinese beverage heiress Kelly Zong Fuli has been appointed as chairman of Hangzhou Wahaha Group Co., the beverage giant founded by her father, according to business registration information.

Zong was listed as chairman, general manager and legal representative for Hangzhou-based Wahaha in the latest update of its business registration profile, according to corporate information platform  Tianyancha .

Since her father’s death in February, Zong has faced significant challenges from steering the empire through internal shareholder disputes to declining sales amid an economic downturn. In July, Wahaha said she will continue her managerial responsibilities after “friendly” discussions among shareholders and aims to ensure the company’s stable and healthy development.

The company didn’t immediately respond to a request seeking comment outside of regular business hours.

Zong is the only child of Zong Qinghou, who founded  Wahaha in 1987 . Dubbed the “princess of Wahaha,” the 42-year-old has spent  two decades  at the firm and became vice chair and general manager in December 2021.

A graduate of Pepperdine University in the US, Zong had been involved in developing marketing strategies to tap younger consumers, including picking a new brand ambassador, working on TV product placement and hiring influencers. But sales have dropped 35% from a high in 2013 to 51.2 billion yuan ($7.22 billion) in 2022, the last year for which data are available, according to the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce.

Zong has her own own brand of tea drinks, KellyOne, launched via the separate Hongsheng Group beverage and packaging-service business which she has  helmed since 2007 .

She is part of a wave of heirs stepping up in China, as the first generation of private entrepreneurs reach retirement age. Some tycoons are preparing their children to run their companies at an earlier age, with many millennial and Gen-Z heirs taking board seats at some of the country’s largest firms.

Warren Buffett turns 94 today. His secret to longevity? Coca-Cola, candy, and a life of joy

My mom never stopped smiling when things were hard. I learned it's a leadership superpower.

  • Growing up, my mom was always smiling.
  • She was always looking at life with the glass is half-full mentality.
  • As a lawyer, I now see the power of a big smile.

Insider Today

My mom's positivity is pervasive. When I was a teenager, my parents took my sister and me on a backpacking canoe trip in the Adirondacks. It wasn't the sort of thing we did often, and our heavy canoe was difficult to carry through the necessary portages. On one particularly steep, weed-riddled stretch, Mom struggled with Dad to get the canoe over the hill. Every time they set it down for a break, she'd shake her head, smile, laugh a little, then continue onward until the canoe was back in the water.

That's how I meet challenges today, but growing up, I didn't always appreciate Mom's glass-is-always-half-full attitude . I wanted to be a successful leader, and to be a leader, especially as a woman, I knew I needed to be taken seriously.

Though I didn't put much stock in smiling or laughing , Mom passed those traits on to me without my intention.

When I smiled too much, I worried my other skills would be overlooked

"Good at smiling" isn't the sort of thing that goes on a résumé , and I long dismissed its value, even as I smiled and laughed through college, then law school, and then climbed the ranks of a multinational corporate law firm.

The first time I recognized the power of a smile in a professional setting was my sophomore year in college, when a business professor said, "I really appreciate how you always come to class with a smile." At the time, happy wasn't a word I'd use to describe myself. But he was right. I smiled and laughed a lot.

Yet, more often than compliments, my tendency toward smiling caused others to overlook and even dismiss my other credentials.

When I was offered a position at a prestigious law firm, my then-boyfriend said, "Of course you got the job; you have an attractive smile." He said nothing about my other qualifications, like graduating magna cum laude   from Georgetown University or being at the top of my class at Columbia Law School. No, it was just about the smile, and he was an echo of what I heard from the larger culture: Don't smile too much, or your other skills and talents will be overlooked.

I learned smiling was an undervalued leadership superpower

While practicing corporate law, staying calm amid high stakes and demanding deadlines was a crucial skill. But it wasn't until a senior partner told me my smile put him and clients at ease, that I recognized how my ability to stay calm stemmed from the way my mother modeled positivity by smiling in the face of challenge.

Whether I was presenting to the Department of Justice, managing a team of over 100 lawyers, or responding to an urgent client request, smiling enabled me to do the job more effectively.

It wasn't just how the positive energy calmed others, but perhaps more importantly, how it calmed me, too. Smiling enabled me to stay present and attentive during many frenzied moments at the office. Indeed, science supports this. A study found that smiling reduces the body's reaction to stress .

My mother's smile not only carried me through some of life's most difficult moments but enabled me to find success in a demanding, high-stakes career. From the vantage point of age, I now understand that an ability to smile and laugh often, when combined with hard work and intelligence, makes for a powerful leader.

Why this writer says her son deserves a champion like Tim Walz

Democratic vice presidential candidate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz embraces his son Gus Walz as his daughter Hope Walz looks on, after speaking on stage at the Democratic National Convention.

When Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz accepted the Democratic nomination for vice president, he spoke out for reproductive rights in personal terms.

In his speech, he described the struggle he and his wife went through to start a family:

"It took Gwen and I years. But we had access to fertility treatments. And when our daughter was born, we named her: Hope."

But it was at the point, when he shouted out his family, that they stole the show.

"Hope, Gus and Gwen, you are my entire world, and I love you."

As the applause rang out, the cameras panned to his 17-year-old son Gus Walz, who, with tears in his eyes, stood up, clapped loudly, pointed to the stage and appeared to repeatedly exclaim: "That's my dad!"

A public spotlight

That emotional moment was celebrated by some, though a handful of right-wing commentators mocked Gus Walz for crying.

Before the DNC, the Walz family made public that Gus has a non-verbal learning disorder, ADHD and an anxiety disorder, according to his family.

The family calls it his secret power, which makes him "brilliant" and "hyper-aware." And that secret power – was now thrust into the spotlight too.

For parents of neurodivergent kids, like journalist and writer Tina Brown, it wasn't just a heartwarming video clip. It was a reminder of her own son, Georgie, a 38-year-old man on the spectrum who still lives with her.

She spoke with NPR's Juana Summers after writing about this topic for The New York Times .

"I just recognized immediately that he was one of what I call 'ours,' the community of people who are on the spectrum, or special needs, or whatever you want to call it, whose emotions are sometimes a little bit sort of overexpressed," Brown told NPR.

"And there was something so sweet about it. It just reminded me of my son Georgie, and it sort of prompted me to write about that, about how for people like us to see Gus and see the love of his family towards him, it was very, very moving and it felt important."

Recognition and self-awareness

Like the Walz family and Gus, Brown recognizes Georgie's own idiosyncrasies as superpowers.

"He just can only tell the truth, so he has no ability to to have any of the social lies that sort of make the world go round," Brown describes.

"For instance, one evening we were at a sort of fancy dinner in the Hamptons. And Georgie, at the end of the evening said to the host, 'Thank you so much for that evening. I enjoyed it. It was fine, but unfortunately nobody spoke to me really. So it was pretty boring. Now the food was OK and I doubt that I'll ever come again.' And at the end of it, my husband shouted in the car, 'I've never been more proud of you in my life, Georgie!'"

But of course, Brown says, this honesty can also pose social challenges to neurodivergent people in social and professional settings. She says that would make a parent who understands these struggles in the White House all the more valuable.

As for what policy issues she'd like to see addressed?

"I think jobs and a real push for people to hire people with special needs in jobs that they can do and which they absolutely are qualified to do. And secondly, a movement towards assisted living, because many of these people are perfectly able to live alone and in fact, they want to. But what they really need is an assisted living community," Brown says.

"And that is completely not there. I mean, this kind of thing I'm talking about is something I think that should be a big movement in this country, because I think it would have many, many people who would be thrilled to have their kid in a place like that."
