Walden Qualitative Checklist: Research Design and Rationale
The Walden Qualitative Dissertation Checklist requires you to provide a rationale for your selected research approach and research design in Chapter 3. First, let’s separate between research approach and research design. Research approach is broad and corresponds to the type of data you will be collecting. There are three specific approaches to data collection: quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods. Your research approach will narrow down your choice of research design. No matter what research approach you select, you should take a paragraph to define and describe the research approach in addition to answering the following questions:
Discover How We Assist to Edit Your Dissertation Chapters
Aligning theoretical framework, gathering articles, synthesizing gaps, articulating a clear methodology and data plan, and writing about the theoretical and practical implications of your research are part of our comprehensive dissertation editing services.
- Bring dissertation editing expertise to chapters 1-5 in timely manner.
- Track all changes, then work with you to bring about scholarly writing.
- Ongoing support to address committee feedback, reducing revisions.
- What is this research approach good for?
- Why does this research approach fit/not fit with the goals or purpose for your research study?
Answering the above questions, along with defining and describing the research approach, will demonstrate your knowledge about the research approach. For this blog, however, we are going to focus specifically on qualitative methods.
Qualitative research has various research designs you can consider for your research study: generic qualitative, single- or multiple-case study, phenomenology, narrative inquiry, grounded theory, and ethnography are just a few examples. Once you provide a paragraph for each research approach, you will do the same for the research designs. You will select the research design that best fits your research study based on the purpose and goals of your study, but you will also need to provide evidence that you considered other research designs. So how do you accomplish that?
Follow the same protocol as you did with the research approach. You will need to define and describe each research design and answer ‘What is this research design good for?’ and ‘Why does this design fit/not fit with the goals or purpose of your research study?’ Aim to cover at least two other research designs considered in addition to the research design you have selected for your study. In total, this will be about three more paragraphs (one for each design). If you select case study research, be prepared to write an additional paragraph regarding how single- and multiple-case study research differ from one another, just to provide a rationale for selecting either one.
Finally, do not forget to provide citations for every decision you make. Ideally, you should provide a minimum of three unique citations for your decisions within each research design. Without citations you will not be able to establish that you are knowledgeable and well-versed in qualitative research.

Walden Capstone Writing Collaborative: Introduction to Writing the PhD Dissertation
Introduction to writing the phd dissertation.
The Walden University Dissertation Guidebook presents a description of the requirements of the PhD dissertation as well as the expectations for content, methods, and social change implications. This document contains an emphasis on student work that “embraces and reflects the mission and core values of the university” (p. 1). Reviewing this material should be one of the first steps in beginning the dissertation writing process.
Next, as students begin preparing to write, they should review the materials related to the PhD dissertation document and process, provided on the Office of Research and Doctoral Services website . This page contains resources for writing the premise, prospectus, and the minimum standards rubrics for each method. In addition, students should download the appropriate template from the Writing Center’s Form and Style PhD Templates page .
To introduce students to writing a PhD dissertation capstone, here is a description of the main goals and outcomes associated with this process and document:
The goal is to address a specific, defined problem AND to fill an identified gap in the research
- Work on the dissertation begins with identifying a subject area and becoming familiar with the research in that area, both broad and specific work from previous researchers.
- The PhD dissertation involves identifying a problem that the student will address in the document.
- Different from the problem, but equally as important, is the gap in the literature. Students need to demonstrate that there has not already been research that sufficiently addresses the defined problem.
The PhD dissertation demonstrates a grounding in related literature and research in field
- Another goal of the PhD dissertation is to demonstrate knowledge and expertise in the subject areas covered in the literature review.
- This is why the literature is lengthy and exhaustive; it is the student’s demonstration that he/she is an expert in these areas and is familiar with all previous relevant research, and that the student can convey this expertise through writing.
The PhD Dissertation is built on basic or applied research
- When earning a PhD, students are expected to conduct their own, original research.
- This can be qualitative or quantitative data collected from human participants or archives or secondary analyses of existing data. The point is that the student is executing a research study.
- The student demonstrates knowledge and expertise in the identified research design and interpretation of results.
- The dissertation demonstrates that the student can convey this expertise through writing.
The document makes a significant contribution (to addressing the problem at the gap) as well as advancing research
- After identifying the problem and the gap, one of the goals of the PhD Dissertation is to contribute to the scholarship in that area. The results should make a significant contribution to the student’s chosen area of focus.
The document advances social change
- A final, Walden-specific and important outcome of the PhD Dissertation is that the study and results also make a significant contribution to social change. Students need to describe who may benefit from the findings of the study and how they may benefit.

Qualitative Dissertation Checklist
• The following provides guidance for reporting on qualitative studies. • All items may not be relevant to your particular study; please consult with your chair for guidance. • The checklist items may not necessarily be in the order that works best for your dissertation. Please consult with your committee; however, the checklist should work well in the absence of other considerations. • Instructions for Students: • Indicate on the checklist the page number (use the actual document page number, not the MS Word pagination) where the appropriate indicator is located. • Respond to comments from the chair and/or URR comments in the comment history box. Do not delete previous commentsjust add your response and use some means to clearly identify your remarks (different font/bold/ italics/color). • Instructions for the chair and/or URR • Provide specific feedback in the comment history column. Do not delete previous commentsjust add your response and use some means to clearly identify your remarks (different font/bold/italics/color). • If you made detailed comments on the draft (using track changes and comments), you can make reference to the draft rather than restate everything in the checklist comment history section. The following is a check-list to help in the preparation of the research based assignment, dissertation or thesis employing qualitative methods. It is not meant to be a 'straightjacket' to be followed slavishly, nor is it likely to be exhaustive since each research based piece of writing will have its own demands depending on the nature of the subject being studied. However, any dissertation is likely to include within its structure, the elements or themes set out in the following sections. It is up to the assignment, dissertation or thesis writer whether these are appropriate to their own purposes and if according to the judgement of the writer in consultation with their research/university appointed supervisor they are found appropriate, then it is still up to the writer to interpret them in ways that are appropriate, interesting and useful. In short, all depends on the creativity, insight and knowledge of the assignment, dissertation or thesis writer. The checklist is merely a prompt for critical reflection It was first developed for a masters degree course and is presented here, substantially extended, as a way of thinking through some issues that assignment, masters, doctoral students often face when preparing to write up their research. They should be read in conjunction with other books and guides on research and in discussion with friends, colleagues and supervisors. It is to be stressed again, the checklist in no way represents a recipe for doing or writing up research, nor does it provide a model to be slavishly followed. The quality of the research and how it is written up is down to the work, the creativity, imagination and careful reasoning of the thesis/dissertation writer. I hope the following helps the process.

From the perspective of doctoral students and instructors, we explain a developmental, interactive process based upon the Checklist for Qualitative Data Collection, Data Analysis, and Data Interpretation (Onwuegbuzie, 2010) for students’ writing assignments regarding: (a) the application of conceptual knowledge for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting qualitative data; (b) utilizing detailed instructor feedback of content and writing style as a positive catalyst for growth; and (c) integrating feedback in future assignments and reflecting on the process. We advocate the cyclical use of this framework for teaching and learning rigorous qualitative research.
