5 Best Free Online Tools to Polish Your Writing Skills

I had a fascinating, friendly conversation the other week with another blogger who adamantly denied that she was a writer. I left the conversation feeling confused.

Let’s break this down.

You are a blogger, I presume?

Bloggers write.

You are a writer.

Now, most bloggers don’t consider themselves “professional” writers, and that’s fine. I think when bloggers say they’re not writers at all, though, it almost relieves them of the responsibility to craft their words carefully.

Know thyself

If you take that responsibility seriously like I do, the first step is knowing where you fall short as a writer. My writing tends to be wordy, for example. I also use sentences that are far too long and complex. I use a passive voice at least a few times in every piece, which always surprises me. I focus most of my editing on fixing those couple of issues.

If you’re not sure what your opportunities are, the best thing to do is grab a peer whose writing you admire and ask him or her to critique a piece or two that you’ve already written. Don’t cop-out and just say, “tell me what I can do better.” That won’t get you actionable feedback.

If you really want to learn how to improve, ask your editing buddy to list two things you do well and two things that are opportunities, based on the sample(s) you send. This will help you identify the typical sore points that you’ll need to keep in mind while editing.

A quick note on writing blog posts

One of the biggest mistakes I see bloggers make, sometimes even experienced bloggers, is writing in huge blocks of text. That is not what works in online writing, especially blogging. You need to break up your text into smallish, bite-sized chunks. Keep that in mind.

Great! Make sure you do the first edit yourself. Read it aloud for clarity, check for flow, and make sure you don’t forget about the all important comma, please! After you’re finished with first-round edits, it’s time for the helpers. Based on my experience, here are the 5 best free online tools to polish your writing skills:

  • Grammarly – Grammarly is a life saver. Although there is a paid version, the free version is robust and accurate most of the time. They have a Chrome extension which automatically checks anything you write online while using the browser. It’s amazing.
  • PolishMyWriting.com aka After the Deadline – After the Deadline is a simple and straight forward double checker. It’s fantastic if you’re not using a spelling or grammar checker in your blog editor. Kudos to my bloggy friend and The Art of Better Blogging Facebook Group-mate Jenn @ Women Winning Online for this fabulous recommendation.
  • Hemingway – There are quite a few features that make Hemingway one of my favorite copy checker tools. I appreciate the way it highlights sentences that are too long, wordy or complex. It also provides a word count and readability scores as well as gives suggestions on replacements for complex words or phrases.
  • Tone Analyzer – I wish I could have a constant tone analyzer for my spoken words as well. Nonetheless, I write how I speak. I can be a slight bit blunt at times, so I’ve found Tone Analyzer to be helpful in ensuring that my words aren’t coming off the wrong way. Shout-out to my other FB group-mate, Annie , for introducing me to this one.
  • Expresso – Expresso’s mission is to help writers hone their skills and learn along the way. It’s a little bit more technical with the results but it’s a fantastic way to get better in the long-run.

Although all the tools listed above are spectacular, remember that they’re just tools to be used. Sometimes they’ll be wrong so always use your best judgment and go with your gut.

To have better blog posts, I often use spell checker from Ginger (Check Reverso.net and find Spell check tab) and plagiarism checker called Unplag (can be found at Unplag.com). The first tool is free and simple to use – just copy&paste parts of your blog post to get rid of spell checking mistakes. The second tool is handy in striving for original content.

P.S. Besides, there’s a typo in Hemingway App, double “m”, please check it and correct.

Winners of the 2024 Princeton Writes Essay Contest

Four Princeton staff members have been honored for their writing in the 10th annual Princeton Writes essay contest.

By Adrianne Da Ponte, Advancement   The 2023-2024 contest invited participants to describe a space they would like to create “within our University community or elsewhere.” Thirty-one staff members representing 27 academic and administrative units took up the challenge. An essay by Alison Cummins, office and events coordinator at the Sharmin and Bijan Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Iran and Persian Gulf Studies, won the Princeton Writes prize. Essays by Joseph Gessner, Julie Meyers, and Alice Señeres received honorable mentions.

Chancellor Green’s rotunda served as the setting for a celebration of honorees and their fellow contest participants on June 6. Princeton Writes  Program Director John Weeren thanked all entrants for constructing spaces “designed to nourish ourselves and engage with others,” whether “magical” or “grounded in the here and now.”

Cummins’ prizewinning essay is less about creating a space from scratch than coming to terms with a space that once existed and is now both a source of longing and a catalyst for re-imagination. In passages of vivid color and intimate detail,  The Blue Room(Link is external) (Link opens in new window) evokes a beloved childhood bedroom and draws readers into a reflection on growing up and the ways in which the past shapes the present.

As a writer with primary interests in plays and fiction, Cummins enjoyed the chance to explore non-fiction writing through her essay. Her educational background includes a master’s degree in writing for the stage and screen from University College Dublin, along with a BA in sociology and minors in English and creative writing from Muhlenberg College. She has had several plays produced and is currently working on a novel.

Throughout her life, Cummins has enjoyed opportunities to travel and to live and study abroad, including a brief stint in Nepal cut short by the pandemic. She brings this international perspective to her work at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center, where frequent event-planning responsibilities enable her to engage with scholars and artists from around the world. 

For Gessner, a mail carrier with Print and Mail Services who also happens to be a playwright, this year’s contest provided a welcome opportunity to connect his writing to his lifelong interest in the natural environment. In his essay,  A Thousand Trees from Now(Link is external) (Link opens in new window) , he proposes the creation of a “mini-forest” on Princeton’s campus. Modeled on a method developed by botanist Akira Miyawaki, this concept relies on native plants and intensive cultivation to rapidly replicate mature forest communities on small plots in locations around the world.

As Gessner envisions it, this Princeton forest would build community—not only among plants but also among the generations of people involved in its cultivation and stewardship. The theme of community, of finding and building “the connections between things,” is a through-line in Gessner’s life and work. His undergraduate studies in sociology shaped an abiding interest in cultural encounters, both between and within communities. A move to Princeton some 25 years ago from rural south Jersey represented a personal cultural shift, one that he relishes on daily rounds and in conversations within what he calls the University “ecosystem.” His latest project is a play about a billionaire trying to sell her plan to revive a struggling mining town.

Meyers’ essay,  Hidden Daggers(Link is external) (Link opens in new window) , envisions the creation of a “Well, Come!” center on campus that offers warmth, comfort, and solace to all who enter. She recounts her own experience as a college student facing the death of her mother while her roommates eagerly discussed plans for winter break, a reminder that even seemingly innocuous conversations can unwittingly inflame hidden suffering. Meyers’ center is meant to be a place of sanctuary where this pain need not remain concealed.

In the loss of her mother, Meyers found inspiration for her life’s work—fundraising for causes that matter. “Although I chose not to go into medicine, I knew I could make a difference speaking about health and other vital issues,” says Meyers, whose first job involved fundraising for breast cancer. Through subsequent fundraising and communications teaching roles, she has continued to work for causes she believes in, and sees her life as an experience of gratitude. Now an associate director for donor relations in University Advancement, Meyers relishes the opportunity to express gratitude to those whose generosity helps sustain Princeton’s mission.

Señeres, an associate dean for academic affairs in the Graduate School, never thought of herself as a writer until she started taking classes through Princeton Writes . The easy camaraderie of these sessions gave her the confidence to enter this year’s contest. Her essay, Tell Me About It(Link is external) , which imagines a campus coffee shop built around “deep but brief interactions,” was inspired by a transformative encounter in her own life.

In her role at the Graduate School, Señeres works with students in the sciences and engineering, guiding them through every touchpoint of their careers at Princeton, from admissions to program completion. Formerly a professor of mathematics and director of the Learning Centers at Rutgers University, she brings to her work at Princeton a deep understanding of the challenges and rewards of graduate education.

The central theme of her essay—finding opportunities to listen to others and to trust in even fleeting connections—has also informed many of her life decisions, whether choosing to embark on a new doctoral program, pulling up stakes and spending a year in Germany on a Fulbright, or taking up horseback riding as an adult.

Princeton Writes , established in 2013, provides a welcoming space for employees and students to strengthen their practical communication skills through workshops, tutorials, practice-based learning groups, and other forms of support. 

Among these offerings is Writing Space, a congenial and creative community of writers and would-be writers who meet monthly between September and June in the classroom in B03 New South. Writing Space gives participants the opportunity, inspiration, and motivation they need to set aside time to write and is sometimes the starting point for winning essays.

How to write a college essay

1. Keep it real. It’s normal to want to make a good impression on the school of your choice, but it’s also important to show who you really are. So just be yourself! Compelling stories might not be perfectly linear or have a happy ending, and that’s OK. It’s best to be authentic instead of telling schools what you think they want to hear.

2. Be reflective . Think about how you’ve changed during high school. How have you grown and improved? What makes you feel ready for college, and how do you hope to contribute to the campus community and society at large?

3. Look to the future. Consider your reasons for attending college. What do you hope to gain from your education? What about college excites you the most, and what would you like to do after you graduate? Answering these questions will not only give colleges insight into the kind of student you’ll be, but it will also give you the personal insight you’ll need to choose the school that’s right for you.

What can the news, features, essays, interviews, photos, videos, podcasts and graphics in The New York Times teach your students about composing for a real audience? So much, we hope, that the units we detail below are just a beginning.

Our writing curriculum is a road map for teachers as well as an invitation to students. For teachers, it organizes our offerings into nine units, each of which focuses on a different genre or type of composing that your students can find not just in The Times but also in all kinds of real-world sources.

For students, these units offer confirmation that they have something valuable to say, choices about how to say it and a global audience eager to listen. Promoting student voices has always been a pillar of our site, and through the opportunities for publication woven into each unit, we want to encourage students to go beyond simply consuming media to becoming creators themselves.

Though some of the units spotlight mediums like photography or podcasting, writing is at the heart of each one. All our units begin and end with written reflection and depend on writing throughout — to plan and organize, to outline and script, to summarize and process. Increasingly, Times journalists are composing in multimedia, weaving photos, illustrations, video and audio into their written reports. We’re inviting students to do the same.

  • Sentence type flow Pieces with good flow will make use of all four sentence types, varying them to keep the reader interested.
  • Sentence length flow Sentence length is indirectly related to sentence type, and is a good indicator of flow. Flow can be altered by adding, removing, lengthening, shortening, combining, or splitting sentences. Long sentences will be indicated by a red line on the graph. Sentences that flow poorly with their surroundings will be orange, and the source of the problem can often be found in a nearby sentence.
  • Word length flow Word length is a minor contributor to overall flow, but even minor variations are signs of good rhythm.
  • Passive Voice Index This is a measure of how frequently the passive voice is used. Consider revising your document if it scores over 100.
  • Prepositional Phrase Index This is a measure of how frequently prepositional phrases are used. Consider revising your document if it scores over 100.
  • Average sentence length Sentence length is a major contributor to the level of education required to read a body of text.
  • Sentence length standard deviation This is a measure of the amount of variation in the length of a text's sentences. In texts that have broad appeal, this tends to fall between 50 and 90% of the average sentence length. You can increase this number by making long sentences longer, and short ones shorter.
  • Sentence deviation to length ratio This is a measure of the sentence variety, and a major contributor to flow. Most novels score between 0.5 and 0.9, and popular ones often score near the high end of the range. You can increase this number by making long sentences longer, and short ones shorter.
  • Just the stats preset Use this preset when you're only interested in the stats tab. Critique and Flow will be hidden.
  • Honesty preset This preset checks for common indicators of deception, either by lying or omission, and is based on the findings of this study . Areas with high concentrations of these indicators should be viewed with skepticism. Note that the presence or absence of these indicators does not guarantee that a statement is true or false, and that the study was done on spoken communications, so it might be more applicable to interviews and speeches. As always, use your brain.
  • Doubled words A word used twice in a row may be a typo.
  • Commonly confused words This will check for the internet's most frequently confused words and notify you if it looks like you misused one. It is experimental and probably the least reliable feature. Consult a dictionary when necessary.
  • Sentences starting with the same word A word should not be used to start more than one sentence in a single paragraph.
  • Misplaced conjunctions It is considered poor style to place coordinating conjunctions at either end of a sentence. Placing a subordinating conjunction at the end of a sentence is against the rules.

  • Overwriting Words like "very" and "really" make sentences wordier and weaken your message. These can be deleted in almost all cases without affecting the meaning of the sentence.
  • Abstract words Abstract words lack specificity and overusing them can make even simple concepts difficult to understand. There are times when abstract words are desirable or even necessary; it would be difficult to write about math or programming without mentioning variables or functions, but you should use more specific terms whenever possible.
  • Wordy and redundant phrases These phrases make your writing more difficult to understand. In most cases, they can be replaced with one or two words, or even deleted.
  • Legalese These antiquated, arcane words and phrases will make your writing look like a contract.
  • Double negatives Double negatives are almost always poor style.
  • Adverbs They aren't bad in small quantities, but consider revising your document if more than 5.5% of its words are adverbs. Adverbs ending in "-ly" are considered the worst offenders.
  • Adjectives They aren't bad in small quantities. A few of the words on this list can also function as other parts of speech. You have been warned.
  • Contractions In formal writing, the use of contractions is considered a fault.

  • Profanity Profanity should not be used in formal writing outside of direct quotations.

  • Similes Similes and metaphors should be used sparingly. This option will detect most common types of similes.
  • "Said" replacements Some people think that these substitutes for "said" are weak or obnoxious, especially if overused.

  • Gender-specific pronouns Avoid using gender-specific pronouns in formal writing when the subject's gender is unknown.
  • Weasel words Like abstract words, weasel words and phrases lack specificity. At best, they convey uncertainty. At worst, they can be used to "weasel out" of telling the truth in a straightforward manner. When checking a document that is speculative by nature, you might want to disable this detector.
  • Third person pronouns According to this study , high concentrations of third person pronouns may indicate deception.
  • Bias language These words and phrases often show the author's bias.
  • Uncommon words Uncommon words will increase the document's reading difficulty.

  • Sentence fragments A sentence must have at least one noun and one verb. Anything that does not is a fragment, and if it occurs outside of dialog, it should probably be rewritten.
  • Long sentences Long sentences tend to be more difficult to read, making them good candidates for trimming or splitting. Alternatively, parallelism may be used to improve their readability, though this will not decrease the ARI score.

The scope depends on what type of text you’re writing—for example, an essay or a research paper will be less in-depth than a dissertation topic . Don’t pick anything too ambitious to cover within the word count, or too limited for you to find much to say.

Doing the research

Once you know your topic, it’s time to search for relevant sources and gather the information you need. This process varies according to your field of study and the scope of the assignment. It might involve:

Once you have a clear idea of your structure, it’s time to produce a full first draft.

This process can be quite non-linear. For example, it’s reasonable to begin writing with the main body of the text, saving the introduction for later once you have a clearer idea of the text you’re introducing.

To give structure to your writing, use your outline as a framework. Make sure that each paragraph has a clear central focus that relates to your overall argument.

The character of Mrs. Norris provides another example of the performance of morals in Mansfield Park . Early in the novel, she is described in scathing terms as one who knows “how to dictate liberality to others: but her love of money was equal to her love of directing” (p. 7). This hypocrisy does not interfere with her self-conceit as “the most liberal-minded sister and aunt in the world” (p. 7). Mrs. Norris is strongly concerned with appearing charitable, but unwilling to make any personal sacrifices to accomplish this. Instead, she stage-manages the charitable actions of others, never acknowledging that her schemes do not put her own time or money on the line. In this way, Austen again shows us a character whose morally upright behavior is fundamentally a performance—for whom the goal of doing good is less important than the goal of seeming good.

When you move onto a different topic, start a new paragraph. Use appropriate transition words and phrases to show the connections between your ideas.

The goal at this stage is to get a draft completed, not to make everything perfect as you go along. Once you have a full draft in front of you, you’ll have a clearer idea of where improvement is needed.

Give yourself a first draft deadline that leaves you a reasonable length of time to revise, edit, and proofread before the final deadline. For a longer text like a dissertation, you and your supervisor might agree on deadlines for individual chapters.

Now it’s time to look critically at your first draft and find potential areas for improvement. Redrafting means substantially adding or removing content, while revising involves making changes to structure and reformulating arguments.

Evaluating the first draft

It can be difficult to look objectively at your own writing. Your perspective might be positively or negatively biased—especially if you try to assess your work shortly after finishing it.

It’s best to leave your work alone for at least a day or two after completing the first draft. Come back after a break to evaluate it with fresh eyes; you’ll spot things you wouldn’t have otherwise.

When evaluating your writing at this stage, you’re mainly looking for larger issues such as changes to your arguments or structure. Starting with bigger concerns saves you time—there’s no point perfecting the grammar of something you end up cutting out anyway.

Right now, you’re looking for:

  • Arguments that are unclear or illogical.
  • Areas where information would be better presented in a different order.
  • Passages where additional information or explanation is needed.
  • Passages that are irrelevant to your overall argument.

For some assignments, you’ll receive feedback on your first draft from a supervisor or peer. Be sure to pay close attention to what they tell you, as their advice will usually give you a clearer sense of which aspects of your text need improvement.

Redrafting and revising

Once you’ve decided where changes are needed, make the big changes first, as these are likely to have knock-on effects on the rest. Depending on what your text needs, this step might involve:

  • Making changes to your overall argument.
  • Reordering the text.
  • Cutting parts of the text.
  • Adding new text.

You can go back and forth between writing, redrafting and revising several times until you have a final draft that you’re happy with.

Think about what changes you can realistically accomplish in the time you have. If you are running low on time, you don’t want to leave your text in a messy state halfway through redrafting, so make sure to prioritize the most important changes.

Editing focuses on local concerns like clarity and sentence structure. Proofreading involves reading the text closely to remove typos and ensure stylistic consistency. You can check all your drafts and texts in minutes with an AI proofreader .

When editing, you want to ensure your text is clear, concise, and grammatically correct. You’re looking out for:

  • Where you use numerals vs. words for numbers.
  • How you capitalize your titles and headings.

Unless you’re given specific guidance on these issues, it’s your choice which standards you follow. The important thing is to consistently follow one standard for each issue. For example, don’t use a mixture of American and British spellings in your paper.

Additionally, you will probably be provided with specific guidelines for issues related to format (how your text is presented on the page) and citations (how you acknowledge your sources). Always follow these instructions carefully.

Like Harris, my wife is a stepmother to my son.

I am no longer in a relationship with his father and have been in a new relationship for four years. My wife came into my son's life when he was 6 years old and quickly stepped into a parental role. It was a role she enthusiastically took on.

Although she didn't give birth to my son, my wife is absolutely his second mother.

My son and wife's relationship started friendly

My wife didn't immediately take an authoritative role or force him to treat her like a parent. At first, she was more like a grown-up friend — someone he knew he needed to respect, but someone who would take him on drives to get ice cream or let him pretend to drive her car while I was inside the grocery store.

During the pandemic, my wife volunteered to take the lead in helping my son with virtual school so I could focus on work. She created a schedule for him, made him lunch, and ensured he kept up with assignments. When the playgrounds opened, she would take him to play, armed with a backpack full of whatever was needed.

I have gone on several overnight trips , leaving the two of them alone together. My son doesn't even call or text me when I'm gone because he's having so much fun hanging out with my wife. I never have to worry about him; I know my wife will make sure he takes a bath and goes to bed on time.

There are days when I will ask her to tag in and do the bedtime routine because I'm working or want a break, and she does it without question. My son knows that if he needs something, he doesn't have to come to me all the time.

Seeing my wife willingly step into a parental role with my son has strengthened our relationship. I knew I loved her almost immediately after we met, but seeing how my son responded to her made me more secure in my decision.

Sometimes, she still refers to him as mine, and I always remind her that she's his mom, too. We do everything as a team: school meetings, performances, birthday parties . Everyone knows us as his two moms, and there's no one else I could imagine doing this with.

My son now sees my wife as the missing piece to our family puzzle. He proudly claims her as his other mom.

"You're my mom too," my son will say when my wife calls herself his stepmom. He made that decision. My wife never wanted to force a close relationship on him, but he pushed for it.

Media has warped the perception of stepmoms

Popular media depictions of stepmoms are largely negative. The common trope is that they're evil.

For example, you have characters like Meredith Blake in the Lindsay Lohan version of "The Parent Trap," the Baroness von Schraeder in " The Sound of Music ," and, of course, the prototype: Cinderella's Evil Stepmother.

These women are always seen as temptresses who come in and seduce the father into marrying them before revealing they intend to get rid of his daughter so that she will be the only woman in his life.

Maybe there are stepmoms out there who fit this description, but by and large, stepmoms are there to be whoever their step kids want them to be.

I know that's exactly the role my wife plays, and my son and I are all the more lucky for it.
