Queens College, CUNY
New york, united states.
The Queens College MFA Program in Creative Writing and Literary Translation is taught by award-winning writers who are recognized nationally and internationally. Our students graduate with degrees in poetry, prose (fiction/creative nonfiction), playwriting, and literary translation and move on to a variety of careers. They publish, win fellowships, and establish themselves in the arts and academic communities. Our MFA program, one of only two in the nation to offer literary translation as a track within a creative writing program, reflects Queens itself—the country’s most culturally diverse borough. Our students write and learn in the perfect setting for tradition and innovation.
In workshop, craft and literature courses, our renowned faculty challenges as much as it nurtures. Our program partners with the Poetry Society of America, Cave Canem, Kundiman, and INTAR Theatre, as well as hosting their own Trends in Translation event series. Students exercise a role in building their writing community through residencies at the Louis Armstrong House Museum, the CUNY-wide Turnstyle Reading Series and Armstrong Literary--a national literary journal.
The program offers funding in the form of a limited amount of scholarships, awarded on a competitive basis. Students can apply for paid teaching positions in the English department in their second year of the program, as well as instructor positions with the school’s writing center. Students may also obtain a certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) as part of their MFA. The program also offers a yearly book prize for translators with Hanging Loose Press, a $1000 poetry prize awarded by the Poetry Society of America in the form of the Hoyt Jacobs Poetry Prize, and a graduating thesis prize publication from Ghostbird Press.
