Recently, Kenyans have witnessed an increase in incidents of fire where fire has gutting down homes, buildings and factories, with loss of lives and property. Lack of disaster preparedness has remained one of Kenya’s enduring development challenges for decades. There is lack of recognition of the interrelationship between disaster preparedness, unsustainable production and consumption patterns. Most of the fire disaster response initiatives in Kenya tend to be ad hoc, uncoordinated and short-term measures, mainly in the form of emergency relief services to the worst affected areas. Fire outbreaks are not only a health risk, but they also adversely affect the social, economic and environmental conditions of an organization. The purpose of this study was to assess fire safety preparedness measures in place at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport based on International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. The study employed descriptive research design targeting 340 respondents ...

In Ghana, the incidence of fire outbreak has become the order of the day, as there is no single day without news on fire outbreaks in some parts of the country. These fires affect different buildings. Knowing how to use installed facilities within buildings is very important in tackling fire emergencies. This study was conducted to assess the perceptions of occupants on fire safety preparedness in the Central Business District (CBD) of Kumasi. The key objectives set out were to assess fire disaster preparedness among occupants in the CBD, to assess the perceptions of the occupants on the causes of fire outbreaks and the use of firefighting equipment in the CBD, and to identify the measures which occupants feel should be put in place to control outbreak of fire in the CBD. The study adopted a case study research strategy. Empirically, the findings from the research showed that there is limitless fire safety preparedness among occupants in the CBD of Kumasi. The study recommends, that fire assembly points/emergency shelters, public education on fire safety, enforcement of fire safety policies, among others should be put in place to ensure that fire outbreaks are controlled in the CBD. Fire outbreaks often occur with the exigency of appropriate response from building occupants in order to safely escape it. Fire safety in buildings is a major design consideration in architecture which helps everyone to escape by way of the most harmless and closest exit point. This research is a case study of the fire emergency safety preparedness in the College of Leadership Development Studies building in Covenant University, Ota in Nigeria, to establish how prepared the building and its users are towards combating a fire outbreak, with a view to identify areas for further improvements. The study adopted a pragmatic research approach that made use of both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The results revealed that the fire emergency safety preparedness of the college building is low. The active and passive fire emergency safety provisions of the building, exhibited various levels of inadequacies. A significant finding was that there was no provision of any full scale firefighting devices in the building. Also, while most of the respondents can easily locate the active emergency firefighting hand appliances situated in the building, majority of them cannot operate the devices. Fire drills were also found not to be a regular periodic exercise in the building. Some of the recommendations made are that: the building should be retrofitted with the various active and passive fire emergency safety measures found to be lacking; also workshops, seminars and fire drills should be conducted periodically in conformity with best practices.

Abstract- Due to the inherent fire risk in occupancies, it necessary that they are provided with suitable and sufficient escape route in case of fire emergency. This will ensure that occupants can get to a place of relative safety within the shortest period of time without travelling excessive distances or encountering hindrances. This paper is resultant of a study conducted on fourteen commercial highrise buildings in Nairobi CBD. It assesses essential fire escape route elements in the light of the requirements of the national regulations, laws and standards. Inspections, questionnaire survey, document review and interviews were used in the research. One hundred and nine (109) occupants responded to the questions poised to capture their perception, attitude and opinion on the escape route/s at their workstations. In the assessment 85.71 % of the surveyed escape routes exhibited insufficient or unsuitable fire elements while only 7.14 % of the buildings had sufficient and/or suitabl...

Fire outbreaks have risen to a worldwide attention in recent years as both an environmental and economic issue. Despite the fact that nothing could be sustainably done to completely stop the occurrence of fire disaster, something can be done to mitigate the spread. It is in line with this acuity that the study accessed the level fire preparedness in the events of fire disasters in public buildings in Ibadan Metropolis, Nigeria. Fire disaster preparedness was conceptualized in this study as the provision of fire fighting apparatus, technical knowhow to operate the apparatus by occupants and their knowledge of municipal firefighting authorities. Forty-three (43) public buildings and one hundred and eight (108) building occupants were conveniently selected and sampled. The cross-sectional survey gathered data through direct observation of the buildings and questionnaire administration. Questionnaires elicited responses on fire safety provisions in buildings, occupants' abilities to...

The aim of the research was to study fire safety within Kariobangi Light Industries, Nairobi County, Kenya. This industrial cluster is characterized by poor infrastructure and numerous concrete buildings which house small to medium scale enterprise industries in go downs on the ground floor and low-income residential apartments on the floors above. Specifically, the research sought to assess fire safety awareness among the business community operating within the industrial cluster. Purposive sampling was used to select the industries licensed to operate therein in the year 2014. The Bivariate Pearson correlation analysis shows that there is a significant positive correlation between fire safety awareness among the business community and their implementation of the same (p = .000). The linear regression analysis results showed that fire safety awareness impacts significantly on the implementation of fire safety (p = .000). It can therefore, be concluded that fire safety awareness amo...

Fire, apart from being very useful, and an essential good for human being; it can be very dangerous, when it occurs where it is not needed, and unprepared. The study main objective was to assess fire safety preparedness in building construction sites in DarEs -Salaam, Tanzania; specifically looking into assessing awareness on fire safety preparedness among building construction site workers, examining the existing situation of the building construction sites on the provision of fire safety preparedness gears, and at the end recommending on the possible measures to improve fire safety preparedness in building construction sites. The research design adopted in this study was descriptive survey research. Questionnaire, focus group discussion and observation were used to collect data in which 48 questionnaires were distributed, and 42 of thequestionnaires returned, alongside with the focus group discussions containing 40 respondents from different construction sites. Simple, randomly and purposively sampling methods were used in selection of the study sample. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS, and Microsoft excel, presented in charts, plates, frequency table and percentage form for easy interpretations. The study findings revealed that; fire safety preparedness awareness was low among majority of site laborers in the selected construction sites, due to inadequacy of trainings to site laborers, and unawareness on the uses of firefighting gears. Moreover, the study revealed that; most of site staff are aware on the fire safety measures due to their participation in different trainings. Likewise, the provision of firefighting equipment in construction site, is still low in most of building construction sites. The study also found that; fire and safety drills were not regularly conducted, and there was lack of an assembly point in construction sites. The study recommends on; the conduction of fire safety trainings, campaigning through different media in order to raise awareness on fire safety preparedness, compliance with different statutory requirements such as Fire Rescue Acts, OSHA, and other regulatory status, so as to ensure maximum state of preparedness in case of fire outbreak in building construction sites.

Fire in learning institutions is a public concern because of the increased incidences, injuries and deaths of innocent immediate school stakeholders not to mention the destruction caused by the fire to the institution buildings such as the halls of residence and lecture rooms. Preparedness to fire disaster will help to minimize loss of lives, property and learning time. The purpose of this study was to investigate fire disaster preparedness in the UTM engineering faculty in Johor Bahru. The study was guided by the following objectives; to establish the adequacy of firefighting facilities in UTM engineering faculty in Johor Bahru, to determine the extent to which UTM engineering faculty buildings are constructed in relation to policy provisions pertaining to fire disaster preparedness, to establish how UTM engineering faculty has put in place fire safety plans as a measure of fire disaster preparedness, to determine whether UTM engineering faculty in Johor Bahru trains workers and students on appropriate responses in case of fire outbreak and to make recommendations from the study. The research adopted a descriptive survey design. The target population was the academic staff, supporting staff and students in all the six schools in UTM engineering faculty in Johor Bahru. Simple random sampling was used to give every subject an equal chance to be selected. Data were collected by means of questionnaires which were administered to the respondents through drop and pick method, and the site observation checklist. Data collected from respondents were analyzed through descriptive statistics. The results were presented using frequency tables. Basing on the study findings, majority of the respondents reported that a few specific firefighting facilities in schools were adequate and annually inspected contributing to a low level of fire disaster preparedness. In relation to faculty buildings and fire safety, in majority of the schools, lecture rooms are not congested, laboratories have two doors and all laboratory chemicals are properly stored, assembly points and all exit routes are well labeled. This indicated a high level of fire disaster preparedness. On safety plans, most schools have evacuation plans, but they have never used them. The fact that most schools have never experienced the use of the evacuation plans in the schools, shows that in case of fire disaster, the stakeholders may not benefit from them. Most schools do not remind the stakeholders of these plans and this means that the plans may not help them in case of a fire disaster. Most schools lack evacuation plans for vulnerable persons. All these are signs of fire disaster unpreparedness. On training in fire safety, most workers and students have not been trained on appropriate responses in case of fire outbreak and most of them may not know what to do in case of fire disaster leading to fire disaster unpreparedness. Basing on the study findings, the faculty management should consider adding more firefighting facilities like sprinkler system, reliable water supply, fire boots, suits, helmets, hoods, gloves, sacks of sands in buildings, fire blankets, fire fighters’ outfits, fire protective clothing, fire hydrants, fire escape ladder and self-contained breathing apparatus so that they become proportional to the number of buildings and people in the schools. It is also recommended that windows should not be grilled, and doors should open outwards. In addition, UTM engineering faculty stakeholders should be made aware of evacuation plans. Finally, all UTM engineering faculty stakeholders should be trained on fire safety. The researcher suggested that a similar study be carried out in other UTM faculties in Johor Bahru to check on fire disaster preparedness in the schools as cases of fire disasters are on the rise.
