They're easy to identify as "life." what about a cold virus? Mold growing on a slice of bread? Or seeds encased in hard protective "shells" that can lie dormant for centuries? What, in essence, is this thing we call life? This Web page on the National Science Foundations's Web site gives us answers to many biological questions. Beautiful images can ignite the interest of all ages.

Free Biology Education Project Topics

In this article, we’ll be looking at a list of Free Biology Education Project Topics. These topics are compiled by Students Mirror Educators to help Biology Education students who are having difficulty getting their project topics.

It’s one thing to source project topics; it’s another thing to get them approved before you begin to work on them. Finding a good and acceptable project topic can be hectic and time-consuming.

A lot of students have complained that despite the stress they went through looking for project topics, they often get rejected or disapproved of by their assigned supervisor for various reasons, and they may be given a topic by the supervisor or they’ll be asked to bring another topic for approval. And in most cases, supervisors demand that their students bring at least three topics for him to choose from among them.

A lot of students have proposed project topics that are not approveable, which get rejected at the end of the day. However, in this article, we provide acceptable project topics to relieve you of the stress of searching for an undergraduate research project.

But before we look at the biology education project topics, we’ll look at some of the reasons why supervisors often reject project topics proposed by their students. They include:

  • The proposed project topic may not be feasible for the student’s level of expertise or the resources that are available to them to carry out the project.
  • The proposed project topic may have previously been extensively researched and may not offer new or original insights.
  • The proposed project topic may not align with the supervisor’s area of expertise or his or her research interests.
  • The project supervisor may not have the time or resources to provide adequate supervision for the proposed project topic.
  • Last but not least, the proposed project topic by the undergraduate student may not fit into the academic curriculum or his or her programme of study.

NOTE: On Students Mirror Blog, we only provide our readers with free project topics, not project materials. Unlike other blogs, we encourage students to carry out their project themselves and not copy and paste from past materials. It is unethical and academically dishonest to plagiarize someone else’s research project and submit it as your own work.

If you have gone through the aforementioned free Biology Education project topics and selected the ones you like, or if you already have project topics but need guidance, please contact us. Click here to send us an email.

However, as educators, we highly encouraged students to do their projects themselves, because this would be helpful. There are several reasons why undergraduate students should work on their own research projects and avoid copying from previous works. They include:

Undergraduate research projects provide an opportunity for students to apply and deepen their understanding of the material they have learned in their classes.

  • Originality

Secondly, original research contributes new knowledge to the field, which is an important part of academic inquiry. Plagiarizing other previous works undermines the importance of originality and could compromise the validity of results and findings that can be tagged as plagiarism.

  • Professional Development

Participating in research projects can help students develop a variety of valuable skills that are highly sought after by employers, such as teamwork, communication, and project management. Such research experience can be an important factor when applying to graduate school or other professional programmes.

In addition, doing your research work yourself will serve you well in your future careers.

4 Biology Project Ideas for High School Students

Biology Projects are great teaching tools educators can use to boost student interest in the subject and spark classroom participation.

Testing plants and gravity

Testing root growth in relationship to gravity is a fun and simple idea. To do this, students need to cut a strip of paper towel approximately one inch wide. Then, they lay pinto beans on the strip and roll it up. Next, moisten the strip and tape it to a square of cardboard, placing the entire thing in a zip top bag. Finally, place it in a warm window and observe over time and look for roots and stems to sprout.

Once the roots and stems sprout, students will notice that the sprouts point up and the roots point down. After making this observation, students should turn the bag so the plant is growing sideways, then upside down, continuing to observe root growth with these changes

Fruit flies and tea

Tea is often offered as a healthful drink, but which tea is the most healthful? This project tries to answer that. To set up the fruit fly and tea experiment, students must create a mixture of tea and fruit fly food. This works best when students choose four different teas to test four different groups of flies. A fifth group — the control group — will receive fruit fly food with plain water. The tea should be brewed by seeping a tea bag in three tablespoons of boiling water for a set period of time. Then, it should be mixed with fruit fly food.

Once the food is prepared, it should be added to five separate vials. Then, each vial receives 10 adult fruit flies. Every day, the fruit flies that remain alive should be removed and transferred to a new vial that contains the same tea and food mixture. This should be repeated until all fruit flies have died. The student can then determine which food/tea mixture provided the greatest longevity to the flies.

Cleaning oil off birds

When birds are coated with oil after an oil spill, their life is at risk. This project will test a variety of solvents to determine which is the best to use in this situation. It uses feathers, not live birds, to make this determination.

The experiment begins with weighing several sets of feathers, then dipping bird feathers in oil. After the feathers are dipped, they are weighed again. This shows the weight of the oil on the feathers and serves as the means of measuring the effectiveness of the solvents.

Once they are all dipped and weighed, the feathers are washed in a range of cleaners, with one group remaining unwashed to serve as a control. After washing, the feathers are weighed yet again. This should indicate which solvent is the most effective, as the feathers washed in it will show the most oil weight loss.

Vitamin C and colds

Vitamin C is often offered as a solution to help prevent the common cold. This simple experiment helps determine if there is much fact to this common bit of advice. The student selects two groups of willing participants, preferably people who do not live in the same house. One group will agree to take a vitamin C tablet daily for a month, while the second will agree not to. All will record any cold symptoms they experience during that month.

At the end of the month, the groups will switch. After a second month, the data can be collected and analyzed to determine if taking vitamin C made a difference in cold symptoms.

Each of these biology project ideas tackles a different aspect of the subject, including botany, environmental science, human biology and zoology. They all provide an interesting way to present important biology ideas to students in a way that encourages inquiry.

High School Oyster Unit

Exploring environmental issues related to the eastern oyster in chesapeake bay.

Exploring Environmental Issues Related to the Eastern Oyster in Chesapeake Bay is a high school level transdisciplinary unit of study that incorporates both State and National Education Standards for science, with connections to Common Core, and the Maryland Environmental Literacy Standards.  There are also strong connections to the College, Career, and Civic Life Standards ( C3 Framework for Social Studies ), including history, economics, and politics.

The sequence was developed by a team of NOAA educators with guidance from teachers in the Chesapeake Bay region, who reviewed the lessons.

This learning sequence is comprised of four modules, each building on the knowledge and skills of the previous one, and each with different overarching questions. These modules build on in-depth issue analysis skills as students investigate a local environmental issue that they are concerned about and want to investigate. The lessons have been developed with three-dimensional learning in mind, “the idea that science is both a body of knowledge, and an evidence-based model and theory-building enterprise that extends and refines previous knowledge.” ( http://www.nextgenscience.org/three-dimensions ) The challenge for this investigative unit is to answer the following question: How do we increase Chesapeake Bay oyster populations, while providing economic, cultural, and ecological benefits?

There are four modules in the unit:

  • Module 1 : A Historical Perspective of Oyster-Related Environmental Issues – The Chesapeake Bay Oyster Wars
  • Module 2 : Investigating Sustainable Resource Management Using the Fish Banks Simulation
  • Module 3 : Targeting Oyster Restoration – Evaluating Habitat Requirements for the Eastern Oyster
  • Module 4 : Environmental Research and Stewardship Action

In Module 1: A Historical Perspective of Oyster-Related Environmental Issues – The Chesapeake Bay Oyster Wars , students explore the history of environmental issues associated with Chesapeake Bay oysters, a resource that at one time was the most economically valuable natural resource existing in Bay waters.

To this day, conflicts remain between different groups of people who disagree about how to manage the oyster population in Chesapeake Bay. Students will explore and compare historic and current management issues, and the factors that create environmental conflicts by reading and evaluating journal publications, news articles, or other media sources.

  • Recognize the differences between environmental events, problems, and issues; and
  • Identify stakeholders, their beliefs and values, and the stand they have taken on an environmental issue.

This is the key to thoroughly investigating an environmental issue, and is included in MD Environmental Literacy Standards, Standard 1: Investigating Environmental Issues. http://www.marylandpublicschools.org/msde/programs/environment/tk/els.htm

Module 2: Investigating Sustainable Resource Management Using the Fish Banks Simulation is a role-playing interactive computer simulation that allows teams of students to manage fisheries stocks with “competing” fishing companies. FishBanks, Ltd., https://mitsloan.mit.edu/LearningEdge/ simulations/fishbanks/Pages/fish-banks.aspx illustrates sustainable resource management by demonstrating how the actions of individuals who pursue their own self-interests in the pursuit of economic gain can result in the depletion of a resource that is considered a “common” resource for a larger group of people. A resource “commons” includes water, soil, wild game, timber, and other natural resources, some of which are renewable (sustainable), and others that are not.

  • The Fish Banks Game Kit, which includes software, game board, boats, money, instructional materials for the teacher, and Decision Forms and Role Description Guidelines for students. No registration is necessary for this option. This version can either be purchased through the System Dynamics Society, http://www.systemdynamics.org/products/fish-bank/ , or borrowed from NOAA.
  • Online Multiplayer Web-Based Simulation – all student and teacher materials can be found online after the teacher has registered through the MIT Learning Edge Web site, https://mitsloan.mit.edu/LearningEdge/simulations/fishbanks/Pages/fish-banks.aspx .

Students are very briefly introduced to Fish Banks, before they begin. The process takes a few hours, so more than one class period is required. In the game debriefing “game behavior” is graphed, including how the number of ships affected the total catch and fish population. What is often not considered during game play is the lag time between the decisions made (how hard to fish an area), before a decline in population is observed (the total number of fish caught over years of fishing).

Similarities in the interactions between social and environmental systems are compared in the Fish Banks simulation, with the historic and current fisheries management related issues in Chesapeake Bay.

The Tragedy of the Commons (Hardin, 1968) is included as an extension in this module, which allows students to reflect, and think deeply about how we use common pool resources and how resource management (or no management) affect human and environmental systems for the long term.

Module 3: Oyster Restoration — Evaluating Habitat Requirements for the Eastern Oyster

Appendix c: readings and maps, teaching time: 3 class periods with some homework.

After reviewing the history, and exploring the concept of sustainability, Module 3: Targeting Oyster Restoration – Evaluating Habitat Requirements for the Eastern Oyster , considers the habitat conditions required for oysters to thrive and reproduce in Chesapeake Bay. Students learn about the oyster life cycle, and different habitat requirements for reproduction, and for the larval through the adult stages.

The University of Maryland Horn Point Oyster Hatchery provides important information, explaining the process of oyster spawning, and the stages of their life cycle.

Using secondary sources of information, including scientific data, students determine the best site(s) for oyster restoration using online tools, including NOAA’s Oyster Decision Support Tool, https://restoreactscienceprogram.noaa.gov/projects/oyster-planning-tool , and other science resources. The interactions of biotic and abiotic factors associated with suitable oyster habitat are evaluated, and students make recommendations of where oyster restoration should occur.

Perhaps the students’ research indicates that there are certain areas that would allow oysters to thrive, but those sites may conflict with other stakeholder uses. Does the site impede traffic for commercial or recreational boaters? Does the proposed sanctuary conflict with oyster harvesting, fishing, or crabbing sites of commercial watermen? Do local waterfront residents believe it will impact the aesthetic appeal or value of their property?

Transcripts from a public hearing regarding the creation of oyster sanctuaries are provided in Module 3. Students once again analyze the resource for stakeholders’ beliefs and values, and are asked to consider solutions to constituents’ primary concerns. The transcripts, however, do not necessarily represent all the possible stakeholders’ opinions about oyster sanctuaries, nor their level of knowledge about how and why particular sites were chosen for protection, among other possible questions.

Using all of the data, skills, and background information thus far, students will practice investigating an environmental issue related to oyster sanctuaries in Chesapeake Bay.

Module 4: Environmental Research and Stewardship Action

Download Unit Module 4

Teaching time: the length of this module is left to the discretion of the teacher. since the module is learner-centered, student research can take part in the classroom, and/or as an out-of-class assignment; therefore, the time given for the student to complete their research project could be condensed into a number of weeks, or spread across the semester with defined due-dates for the various research project components..

The final module in the High School Unit, Module 4: Environmental Research and Stewardship Action , provides the opportunity for students to perform an in-depth investigation about an environmental issue of their choosing that applies the IEEIA skills they were introduced to during the first three modules. The issue chosen by the student could be related to oysters, or another local environmental issue that they are concerned about.

Finally, students will learn about different categories of environmental action. They will develop recommendations for solutions to the environmental issue they have chosen, and if motivated, will carry out an action plan.

Together, the learning that takes place in the High School Unit provides students a deeper understanding of how technology, politics, economics, and other components of human social systems influence management of the natural resources and environmental systems that form the foundation of our quality of life. Simple awareness of science-related problems and issues is not enough to inform students of the decision-making process required to wisely manage the resources we depend upon for food or other human necessities. In-depth understanding of how and why we make the choices we do concerning environmental protection is paramount to seeing the “whole picture,” and helps us realize the complexities of environmental issues.

Mosquitoes constitute a serious Public Health menace, resulting in millions of death worldwide each year. Emergence of insecticide resistant strains of the mosquitoes poses a serious threat and hence calls for alternative control measures. This study assessed the larvicidal efficacy of the methanolic and aqueous extracts of different parts of Picralima nitida against the 4th instar larvae of the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae . Larvicidal activities of the leaf, seed and pulp of the plant were therefore studied on laboratory reared larvae of A. gambiae at concentration ranges of 0.5 mg/ml to 5.0 mg/ml. The LC 50 and LC 95 values were obtained from probit analysis using SPSS version 16.0, at 95% confidence limit (CL). The Median Relative Potency of the extracts was also obtained using probit analysis at (P ≤0.05). Results of the study indicated that the LC 50 and LC 95 values of the aqueous leaf extracts were 3.14 mg/ml and 42.15 mg/ml at 24 h, 0.35 mg/ml and 4.73 mg/ml at 48 h and 0.16 mg/ml and 2.20 mg/ml at 72 h. A lower larvicidal activity was however observed with the methanolic leaf extract: LC 50 value of 48.38 mg/ml, 15.82 mg/ml and 0.33 mg/ml at 24 h, 48 h and 72 h respectively. Methanolic seed extract on the other hand, exhibited a higher degree of potency compared with the aqueous seed extract with a low LC 50 value of 0.87 mg/ml, 0.21 mg/ml and 0.15 mg/ml at 24, 48 and 72 h respectively; and an LC 95 values of 0.74 mg/ml, 0.18 mg/ml and 0.12 mg/ml at same time interval. A higher efficacy of activity was exhibited by the aqueous pulp extract than the methanolic pulp extract; with lowest LC 50 of 2.79 mg/ml at 72 h, and LC 95 value of 10.40 mg/ml. The relative potency estimate of the aqueous extract at 24 h gave the following result: aqueous leaf extract was 5.48 times more potent than the aqueous seed; the aqueous pulp 2.20 times greater than the aqueous seed whereas the aqueous leaf was 2.50 times more potent than the aqueous pulp. Similar trend was also observed at 48 and 72 h. Comparatively, at 24 h the methanolic seed extract was 269.76 times more potent than the methanolic leaf extracts; the methanolic pulp extract 2.40 times more potent than the methanolic leaf while the methanolic seed gave a potency of 112.49 times more than the methanolic pulp. However at 48 and 72 h, there was a reversal in trend with the methanolic leaf extract showing a relative potency of 2.73 and 11.51 times that of the methanolic pulp. The LT 50 (Median Lethal Time) of the extracts, evaluated at concentration of 1.0mg/ml with P = 0.05, was the following LT 50 ; 28h, 3.6 h and 57 h for aqueous leaf extract, methanolic seed extract and methanolic leaf extract respectively. Similarly, comparative evaluation of the overall efficacy of the various extracts showed that the methanolic seed extract exhibited the highest degree of activity (P<0.05), followed by the aqueous leaf extract and methanolic leaf extract. Conclusively, aqueous seed, methanolic pulp and aqueous pulp extract showed a relatively lower activity and an LT 50 value of 300 hrs and above at a concentration of 1.0 mg/ml. The results of this research therefore underscores the efficacy of the plant and further suggest the use of methanolic seed, aqueous leaf and methanolic leaf extracts of P. nitida as an eco-friendly alternative in malaria vector larviciding.

With the rise in the followers of the low carb diets, many people are turning to them to reap their health benefits. This paper was conducted to find out the effects of following a healthy high fat diet with the focus on the ketogenic diet. The ketogenic diet is a high fat (~70% of calories), low carb (~5% of calories), and moderate protein diet (~25% of calories). Expectations were that evidence will be in favor of following the ketogenic diet. To reach a conclusion, an extensive review of literature was conducted and data was analysed. The expectations were met with the findings proving that a proper high fat diet can drastically improve a subject's overall health.

The Hottest Edtech Topics in 2024

  • Professional Development & Well-Being

Shutterstock 300480332

Each year, we examine the most popular topics at ISTELive to gauge the hottest trends in edtech. It’s interesting and instructive to see how the topics shift each year to reflect the changing times. If you enjoy comparing yearly trends, you can look at our previous lists:

Hottest Edtech Topics 2021

Hottest Edtech Topics 2022

Hottest Edtech Topics 2023

This year, we looked at the number of ISTELive24 sessions tagged with a particular topic, such as equity and inclusion or AR/VR/XR. Many sessions have multiple topics, so there is some overlap between the various categories. We narrowed the topic list down to those that had at least 50 associated sessions, but our hottest topic of the year had a whopping 258 sessions.

Based on this analysis, here are the 2024 hottest edtech trends, in order from least to most popular:

8. Project-based learning

It’s no surprise that PBL continues to be a hot topic for educators, especially those focused on edtech. Tech tools excel at creating immersive experiences for students and allowing them to express their learning outcomes in personal and innovative ways. And, as the technology continues to evolve, the possibilities for curriculum enhancements continue to grow.

With PBL, teachers are engaging students by challenging them to find solutions to real-world problems, encouraging them to work together to solve puzzles and virtual escape rooms , and offering makerspace-style experiences that provide tools for innovation and the chance to build marketable skills.

7. Computer science and computational thinking

The computer science and computational thinking category has made our trend list for the past few years, and we continue to see educators weaving computer science skills into their lessons across subject matter in increasingly creative ways. There’s still a lot of energy dedicated to coding, robotics, and circuits, but now computer science learning is blended with science, history, storytelling projects, and more.

6. Augmented, virtual and extended reality (AR/VR/XR)

Augmented, virtual, and extended realities topped our list last year, but dropped to sixth place at ISTELive24. It was bumped from the top five by a new topic: Innovative Learning Environments. While AR/VR/XR is a subset of this new realm, it’s not surprising that as we move further from the online classrooms of the COVID-19 pandemic, educators are looking for more creative in-person educational opportunities. Still, the use of AR/VR/XR can offer students opportunities to engage in virtual experiences, such as field trips , science experiments, and even historical reenactments that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to access.

5. Innovative learning environments

The ISTELive24 sessions focused on innovative learning environments encompassed both in-person and online learning. They explored neighborhood and community projects, nature walks and gardening, and visits to libraries and maker spaces. They also touched on using robots, deep-diving with open-world gaming like Minecraft, and virtual field trips. Whether in-person or virtual, the trend highlights an interest in engaging students beyond the four walls of classrooms, whether in real-world scenarios or via the use of virtual reality. When paired with the continued focus on project-based learning, the opportunities for creating immersive learning experiences are endless.

4. Equity and inclusion

While social-emotional learning didn’t make the trending list for 2024, equity and inclusion continue to be among the top focus areas in edtech. Engaging and nurturing students across cultures, abilities, learning styles, interests, and identities requires conscious and ongoing effort. In particular, artificial intelligence tools, which are becoming ubiquitous, offer both assistance (such as individualized lesson plans and assessments) and challenges (such as inherent biases in underlying models). With or without AI, educators are still prioritizing efforts to make learning accessible to all students, regardless of their ability or background. This includes girls in STEM initiatives , the use of technology for adaptive and accessible learning, and utilizing technology to support new ELL students.

3. Creativity and curation tools

As the focus continues on project-based learning, authentic assessments, and equity and inclusion, there is an ongoing demand for tools that help students express themselves and share what they’ve learned, which can be a key part of applying or transferring learning. For those educators who don’t have the time or desire to experiment, there are always other teachers who are happy to share their suggestions .

2. Online tools, apps, and resources

This topic is a broad one and has some significant overlap with our number three entry, but it demonstrates the interest educators continue to have in sharing resources and tools. Not only is the landscape of edtech changing at a rapid rate, but teachers and administrators are constantly finding creative ways to utilize available tech resources, whether or not they were intended for educational use. This never-ending stream of new tools may feel overwhelming, but there’s no need to go it alone. Educators can team up to divide and conquer whatever new technology pops up throughout the year.

1. Artificial intelligence

Perhaps not surprisingly, AI rose from second on the list last year to number one this year. The ISTELive24 sessions tagged as AI-related outpaced the next most popular topic by 3 to 1, solidifying its spot as the hottest edtech trend of 2024. But, as we know, AI considerations in education are broad, encompassing everything from ethics and DEI to authentic assessments and customized lesson plans. The addition of AI tools such as transcription, custom chatbots/interactive lessons, text summaries and automated feedback are  changing the face of education and, in some cases, the very nature of roles teachers play and how students learn. Understanding how AI can be used thoughtfully and safely to enhance learning and empower teachers and students alike will obviously be a key area of focus for schools in the year–and years–ahead. And it’s one where ISTE is dedicated to providing robust and nuanced support .

We’re excited to see what trends will develop over the next year. What interesting things are happening in your classroom, school, or community? We hope you’ll bring your expertise and enthusiasm to ISTELive25 .

By Daniel Wilson

August 09, 2024

A new class at Sacramento State will help high schoolers, University students and others learn how to use generative artificial intelligence in the classroom and job market.

The College and Career with AI course , which launches this fall, will teach students to explore AI's role as an information aggregator, coach and counselor by applying AI in various scenarios and critically evaluating its outputs.

The course is offered through Sacramento State’s National Institute on Artificial Intelligence in Society (NIAIS) via the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies. Offering the course was one of President Luke Wood’s original goals for the institute , said Chief AI Officer Sasha Sidorkin , who will teach the new class.

“It's part of the strategy to go directly to students and future students and talk about AI,” Sidorkin said. “The other part is going to faculty and helping them to understand how to work with AI, so it's all part of the same strategy to create an AI-positive culture here.”

The fully online, two-unit course mostly targets area high school students and Sac State students, but it is open to anyone. Non-students may join the course via a free, no-credit Google Group, or earn credits through the College of Continuing Education's  Open University program for a fee.

“I think it’s an exciting concept to experiment with teaching students as we continue trying to identify what skills are going into the use of AI." -- Sasha Sidorkin, chief AI officer for Sacramento State's National Institute on AI in Society

The class will meet 5:30-7:10 p.m. Mondays to accommodate the schedules of high school students, who can enroll for free through the Accelerated College Entrance Program .

The course will help learners embrace the power of AI in real-world situations such as research, problem-solving and creative projects. It requires no textbooks and utilizes a free account through OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Students will be asked to participate in weekly discussion board postings, synchronous class activities and a final AI-assisted project that displays their ability to integrate AI into an academic or professional field.

“I want students to have a hands-on experience. I think that's the most important part,” Sidorkin said. “It's all about exposure, and I don't want them to have a negative connotation associated with using AI.”

Sidorkin called AI an assistive technology that helps students who face barriers to learning, such as neurological disabilities, as well as those who speak English as a second language.

“I really want to remove that bit of bad stigma from it,” Sidorkin said. “AI is a tool, and you have to learn to use it.”

He said the course will help high school students because it teaches them a valuable skill and familiarizes them with higher education.

“As they prepare for college, I think it's a great preparation to come into that college experience,” Sidorkin said.

Sidorkin said he wants the course to eventually evolve into a certificate program or a full degree program, but more knowledge about the technology is needed since it is unclear how AI will be adopted by career industries.

In the meantime, having the course on their resumes can improve students’ marketability when applying for jobs.

“I think it’s an exciting concept to experiment with teaching students as we continue trying to identify what skills are going into the use of AI,” Sidorkin said.

“The important thing that I realized already is that students learn AI differently than people like me who already have all the educational background. It's not just an opportunity to share what we know, but also an opportunity to learn about how students learn about AI.”

Information about the College and Career with AI course and how to enroll is available at sacstate.ai .

Quote from NSF Director Panchanathan about building the industries of tomorrow.

This week with NSF Director Panchanathan

This week, NSF marked the second anniversary of the "CHIPS and Science Act of 2022," signed into law on August 9, 2022. This landmark legislation has empowered NSF to accelerate innovation and build a resilient, inclusive, and productive American STEM enterprise. "NSF has been working at speed and scale to deliver on the tremendous promise across our nation," said NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan. "From the inaugural NSF Engines awards to the SECURE Center for research security launch, we have leveraged the 'CHIPS and Science Act' to lay the groundwork for a more resilient, inclusive and productive American STEM enterprise."

In addition, NSF celebrated the achievements of Asian American scientists, researchers and engineers at the inaugural "Asian American Pioneer Medal Symposium and Ceremony." Hosted by the Asian American Scholar Forum in partnership with @Stanford University's Asian American Activities Center, the event featured speeches by Director Panchanathan and OSTP Director Prabhakar. Speakers highlighted the significant contributions made by the six honored researchers in various fields ranging from media compression to continuous speech recognition.

NSF also spotlighted advancements in science and technology this week. In partnership with Intel Corporation, NSF announced a $7.6 million investment in six projects to advance equitable STEM education and training opportunities that will strengthen the nation's semiconductor workforce. This investment is part of a broader 10-year, $100 million collaboration aimed at tackling semiconductor design and manufacturing challenges and workforce shortages across the U.S. "This initiative will support talent development across the semiconductor industry and improve education and training opportunities in technology fields that are crucial for our global competitiveness," said Panchanathan.

NSF continues to push the boundaries of science and technology, driving innovation and celebrating achievements that pave the way for a brighter future. Vote for one or more of the NSF SXSW panels, including "Charting the Future of STEM," featuring the director. Let's bring science and technology to the forefront of the conversation at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas, next year.

  • Creating a personal spending budget
  • Import/Transform Data to Excel via Power Query
  • Experiment with Pivot Tables
  • Utilize VLOOKUP
  • Create a Tree Map
  • Create a Histogram
  • Create a Scatterplot
  • Make a Forecast model in Excel

1. Create a Personal Spending Budget

The best data science projects are rooted in identifying an area where value can be added by your analysis. Developing a personal daily/weekly/monthly budget in Excel is a great first step that allows for real-world application. A way to expand on this is to have variable inputs that can be adjusted to change the target budget value.

2. Import/Transform Data to Excel via Power Query

A great opportunity to experiment with obtaining data from various sources is by creating a workbook data connection in Excel via Power Query. Power Query can be used to import data from sources such as text files, online services, and databases. Once data is imported you can perform additional steps beginning with renaming columns and changing data types , and eventually moving on to advanced techniques such as adding conditional formatting, creating Pivot Tables , as well as combining different functionalities like the often paired INDEX and MATCH to retrieve specific data values. Overall, an Excel project centered on importing and transforming information is an excellent way to practice data collection, and cleaning, widely applicable in data science .

3. Experiment with Pivot Tables

Pivot Tables are an essential tool for Data Analytics in Excel. They allow you to summarize data while easily highlighting points of interest.

biology education project materials

The above is an example of a Pivot Table created from a dataset containing information on the top 1000 highest-grossing Hollywood films. With it, we’ve obtained the top 15 movies in terms of Domestic Sales quickly and efficiently. This type of analysis can be done on any dataset that interests you .

4. Utilize VLOOKUP

VLOOKUP works well when trying to create new, smaller tables from a large dataset. It’s a great function that allows you to find more targeted, cleaner data to work with. Using VLOOKUP will allow you to make information easier to analyze and will help in many of the projects further down this list.

Check out our VLOOKUP COLUMN and ROW tutorial for more details on how to use VLOOKUP to handle large data tables with ease.

5. Create a Tree Map

A tree map is a data visualization chart that is often used in dashboards. Excel offers a great opportunity to become familiar with this tool and to apply your skills in practice. With Excel you can develop multiple Tree Maps that highlight different points of interest in your data, all the while adjusting formatting and customizing the chart to your liking. The example below is based on the aforementioned dataset containing information about the top 1000 highest-grossing Hollywood films.

biology education project materials

6. Create a Histogram

Histograms are tools used in statistical data analysis whenever we want to visualize the normality of the distribution of data. A potential Excel project involving histograms could take as its starting point researching different types of real-world data (such as the outcome of rolling dice or flipping a coin) and utilizing a histogram to visualize their distributions and determining what they would be classified as. An example of this would be the below visualization which was created using the RANDBETWEEN function in Excel to simulate 1000 coin flips.

biology education project materials

After analyzing the Histogram, we can establish that a coin flip follows a Binomial Distribution logic due to there only being two possible outcomes, heads or tails.

7. Create a Scatter Plot

Scatter plots fall in line with contingency tables, and histograms as being very useful in statistical data analysis.  They are an often-used tool for visualizing the relationship between two variables in data. Like other fun Excel projects on this list, this one would work best with a dataset that holds particular interest to you. Once you have picked a dataset, it’s time to start charting relationships between variables of interest and digging into what you find. An example of a scatter plot made from the previously mentioned top 1000 highest grossing Hollywood films dataset can be found below.

biology education project materials

8. Make a Forecast Model in Excel

Excel has a built-in forecast functionality that can be used to create a prediction on time-related data such as the number of sales of specific products. In order to create a forecast in Excel, you’ll need to select data with a date tied to it and the corresponding values for that date. Forecasting is an area of particular interest for data analysts and experimenting with it in Excel is a chance to get business-applicable experience. Excel also allows you to customize your forecast and set parameters such as the confidence interval, seasonality pattern, and timeline range.

9. Manage a Data Model

Excel enables you to integrate data from multiple tables which can then be connected by defining relationships. An Excel data model is in some ways similar to a relational database and is perfect for visualizing and extracting insights from several different sets of related data. The diagram view in particular is a wonderful way to see the relationships in the model you create.

10. Develop an Interactive Dashboard

The final suggestion on this list is a way to combine everything else we covered so far into one extensive Excel project. Each of the previous examples can be practiced in isolation, but it would also be beneficial to use them together to develop a dashboard for displaying your data and highlighting your data science capabilities in Excel. In order to make a dashboard interactive, it needs to have elements of Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP, relational data, and the chart types mentioned earlier. Adding Slicers to the worksheet will enable users to select their own filters and can ensure that an Excel dashboard is able to rival one built in Tableau or Power BI . Moreover, it comes with the added bonus of being in a format that more people are familiar with, as Excel is more widely used than those tools.

How do I build a project in Excel?

Building a project in Excel follows three easy steps:

  • Identify the area of your project and the desired outcomes,
  • Find the best functionalities to execute your project,
  • Create and share your exciting new project.

The most important thing when starting off with any Excel project is to identify the range, scope, and potential value of your idea: do you want to create something fun and exciting for your personal use or something professional to add to your data science portfolio? Are you trying to solve a particular problem, or are you just playing around? How much time, effort, and money will it take to complete this project? What will its benefits be?

After getting those out of the way, you can look into finding appropriate data sets to work with and researching the functionalities you will be using. Some projects can be executed on a 10-by-10 spreadsheet with very basic Excel knowledge, but for others you will be working with huge amounts of data and leveraging advanced functions.

Finally, once your project is done, don’t forge to share it with the world. Add it to your Kaggle profile and plug it into all your data science job applications. After all, a project is only as important and valuable as you make it out to be!
